SUNBURY - Dr. Wesley E. Trout, 73, of Sunbury RR3, formerly of Northumberland RR1, died at 2:45 a.m. Saturday, June 24, 2000, at his residence. Born Nov. 2, 1926, in Youngwood, he was the son of the late Jacob H. and Mildred L. (Albright) Trout. His wife, B. Eleen (Whetsel) Trout, whom he married July 16, 1945, survives. Also surviving are: children, Dr. Gary Trout, Mifflintown, Dr. Cynthia G. Mickelson, Fall Creek, Wis., and Mrs. Ted (Lonna J.) Koblick, Arlington, Va.; brothers and sister, Jacob Edward Trout and Robert Alan Trout, both of Youngwood, and Verda Hafer, Hunker; six grandchildren and two great-grandsons. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Joyce Eleen; a granddaughter, Tammy Lynn Trout; a brother, U.S. Marshall Hurley Trout; and sisters, Mildred Rhodes and Verna Trout. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the Army Corp of Engineers at Clark Field on the Island of Luzon, Philippines. He was a graduate of Youngwood High School and received his Doctor of Chiropractic Degree from Palmer College of Chiropractic, Davenport, Iowa. He also attended the New York Institute of Chiropractic. He was a chiropractor and was co-founder and director of the Living Principles Program. He served on the board of regents of Sherman College of Chiropractic, Spartansburg, S.C. and the Pennsylvania College of Chiropractic, Levittown. He was a charter member of the Life Fellowship of Pa. and the Susquehanna Area Council for Chiropractic Education (SACCE), Inc. He received the chiropractor of the year in 1976 from the SACCE. He was a member of the Sunbury Bible Church and the Gideons International. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Sunbury Bible Church, Route 11 North, Northumberland, with lay pastor Kermit K. Kohl officiating. Interment will be in Riverview Cemetery, Northumberland. Family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. today and from 1 p.m. until the time of the services Tuesday at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: the Sunbury Bible Church, RR1, Box 226, Northumberland, PA 17857 or to the Gideons International, PO Box 141, Sunbury, PA 17801.
READING - Jane M. Troutman, 81, of Reading (West Lawn), Berks County, died at 7:31 a.m. Monday, May 29, 2000, at her home. Born June 3, 1918, in Mifflin County, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Kathryn (Taylor) Suloff. Her first husband, Russell Ruble, died Dec. 2, 1967. Her second husband, Warren Troutman, whom she married Oct. 10, 1981, survives. Also surviving are: a daughter, Mrs. William (Jane Anne) Keim, Englewood, Fla.; two sons, Larry Ruble, New Palestine, Ind. and Duane Ruble, Mechanicsburg; a sister, Mrs. Chester (Helen) Adams, Mifflin; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Stanley Ruble and a sister, Mary Smith. She was a graduate of the Lewistown Hospital School of Nursing and was employed as a registered nurse for the Governor Mifflin School District. She later worked for the Hassler Home in Shillington. She was a member of the First Church of the Brethren in Wyomissing Hills, Reading. Services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Friday at the Harshbarger Funeral Home, 3 S. Market St., McVeytown, with the Rev. Timothy D. Speicher officiating. Interment will be in Spring Run Cemetery, McVeytown. Family will receive friends from 2:30 p.m. until the time of the services Friday at the funeral home. ELEELE, Hawaii - Mike J. Tsutaoka, 43, of 4642 Kulea Place, Eleele, Hawaii, died of natural causes at 6:45 p.m. Friday, Nov. 3, 2000, at his residence. Born Aug. 10, 1957, in Tokyo, Japan, he was the son of Christine (Reiko) Dandekar of Huntingdon Beach, Calif. and the late Masanobu Tamashiro. His wife, Elaine S. (Carper) Tsutaoka, formerly of Lewistown, survives. Also surviving are: sons, Aaron M. Tsutaoka and Travis K. Tsutaoka, both of Eleele, Hawaii; stepfathers, Takayuki Tsutaoka, Aiea, Hawaii and Prab Dandekar, Huntingdon Beach, Calif.; grandfather, Mitsuo Shikuma, Kahului, Maui; and two half-sisters, Mrs. Tom (Bianca M.) Baker, Huntingdon Beach, Calif. and Lynn Tamashiro, Pearl City, Hawaii. He served in the U. S. Air Force and was a retired member of the Hawaii Air National Guard, 298th Air Traffic Control Squadron, Barking Sands, Kauai. He was employed with ITT Industries, Systems Division at the Pacific Missile Range Facility, Barking Sands, Kauai as an air traffic controller. Prior to that, he worked for the Federal Aviation Administration, Kauai, Hawaii. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Borthwick Mortuary, Koloa, Kauai, with the Rev. Kilborn officiating. Friends may call from 9 a.m. until the time of the services Saturday at the funeral home. Family requests no flowers.
LIN - Marion M. Ulsh, 73, of the Locust Grove Retirement Village, HC 67 Mifflin, formerly of Mifflintown RR5 (Mexico), died at 9:45 p.m. Friday, July 14, 2000, at the village. Born Sept. 24, 1926, in Huntingdon, she was the daughter of the late George and Anna (Richardson) Sheetz. Her first husband, Chester A. McCormick, died Nov. 11, 1956 and her second husband, Harry M. Ulsh Sr., died June 5, 1990. Surviving are: children, Chester A. McCormick Sr., Hanover, Harry M. Ulsh Jr., Mifflintown, Andrew S. Ulsh, Honolulu, Hawaii, Rita A. Barnes, Port Royal, and Mrs. Robert (Carrie) Stadelmaier, Philadelphia; sisters and brother, Bonnie Spender and Steve Sheetz, both of Pensacola, Fla., Anna Ruth Greenleaf, Ft. Walton Beach, Fla., Georgia Freed, McAlisterville, and Esther Straubb, Freeburg; 11 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. She was a 1945 graduate of Juniata Joint High School, Mifflintown. She was a member of the Messiah Lutheran Church, Mifflintown. She retired in 1995 from Empire Kosher Poultry Inc., Mifflintown with 17 years of service. Earlier in life, she was employed by Juniata Garments, Mifflin. Her hobbies included reading, cooking and sewing. Services will be private and held at the convenience of the family, with the Rev. Louise Knotts officiating. Interment will be in the Westminster Presbyterian Cemetery, Mifflintown. There will be no viewing. Memorial contributions may be made to: the American Cancer Society, PO Box 551, Lewistown, PA 17044. Brown Funeral Home, 100 Bridge St., Mifflintown, is in charge of arrangements.
LEWISBURG - Raymond Edward Valentine, 75, of 1 River Road, Lewisburg, formerly of Millmont RR1 and Sunbury, died at 9 a.m. Monday, Dec. 4, 2000, at RiverWoods, Lewisburg. Born Jan. 4, 1925, in Port Royal, he was the son of the late William Smith and Mabel Jane (Reese) Valentine. His wife, Mary Elizabeth (Hoover) Valentine, whom he married Dec. 22, 1945 in Emmaus by the Rev. Royce E. Schaeffer, survives. Also surviving are: daughters, Mrs. William A. (JoAnn V.) Burns, Lynchburg, Va. and Mrs. Joseph E. (Suzanne E.) DeCicco, Ollney, Md.; a brother, Donald Valentine, Allons, Tenn.; and four grandchildren. He was a 1942 graduate of Juniata Joint High School, Mifflintown; a 1943 graduate of Thompson Business College, Harrisburg; and attended Susquehanna University, Selinsgrove. He served in the United States Navy and was awarded the Victory Medal and the American Theatre Medal. He was a public accountant in Sunbury from 1958 until his retirement in October 1986. He was a member of the Lincoln Chapel United Methodist Church, Millmont RR1; the Milton Jarrett Norman Post 201 American Legion, Sunbury; the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 1173, Selinsgrove; a life member of the Friendship Hose Company 1, Sunbury; a member of the Union County West End Fire Co., Glen Iron; and a very active member of the Union County West End Ambulance Association, Glen Iron. Private services will be held at 10 a.m. today at the James L. Schwartz Home for Funerals, 247 Chestnut St., Mifflinburg, with the Rev. Mark R. Shover officiating. Interment will be in the Garden of Tranquility of the Northumberland Memorial Park, Stonington. There will be no viewing. LEWISTOWN - Sharon N. Van Horn, 86, of 401 S. Wayne St., Lewistown, died at 3:43 a.m. Saturday, July 8, 2000, at Beverly Healthcare-William Penn. Born April 23, 1914, in Juniata County, he was the son of the late Ray Thomas and Bertha (Speece) Van Horn. His wife, Kathleen L. (Quay) Van Horn, died Aug. 3, 1995. Surviving are: a son, Thomas Ray Van Horn, Rear 401 S. Wayne St., Lewistown; brother and sisters, Harold Van Horn, Grace Ehrisman, and Wilma Haines, all of East Salem; and one grandson. He was preceded in death by one brother and two sisters. He was a farmer for 45 years and also worked for Hawstone Brick Yard and retired from PennDOT in 1976 after 18 years of service. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Heller-Hoenstine Woodlawn Funeral Home, 200 N. Main St., Lewistown, with the Rev. Michael S. Bailey officiating. Interment will be in East Salem Cemetery, Thompsontown. Friends may call from 10 a.m. until the time of the services Tuesday at the funeral home.
LEBANON - Dennis E. "Van" Van Tassel, 57, of 303 Spring Hill Lane, Lebanon, died Wednesday, June 28, 2000, at his residence. Born Oct. 1, 1942, in York, he was a son of Ralpha E. and Marie A. (Weyant) Van Tassel of York. His wife, Irene (Patterson) Van Tassel, survives. Also surviving are his mother-in-law, Mrs. Clair (Margaret M.) Patterson, Lewistown, a niece, a nephew and several aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by a sister, Priscilla Van Tassel Ducommun. He was a 1960 graduate of Central High School, York; earned a Bachelor of Science degree in education from Millersville University, and received his Master's in education from Edinboro University. He was a language arts/English teacher for 34 years in the Palmyra Area High and Middle schools from 1965 until 1999, and he served as head of the language arts department for many years. He was a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Lebanon, where he served on the vestry; the National Quittaphilla Audubon Society; Pennsylvania Education Association; and the Lebanon County Education Honor Society. He enjoyed reading, sailing, soccer, hiking and church activities. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Cornwall United Methodist Church with the Rev. Theodore C. Meffered officiating. Interment will be in Mount Zion Cemetery, Springettsbury Township, York County. Family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Sunday at Rothermel Funeral Home Inc., 25 W. Pine St., Palmyra and 9:30 a.m. until the time of services Monday at the church. The family requests no flowers; memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Society of Lebanon County, 150 N. Ramona Road, Myerstown, PA 17067; or the National Psoriasis Foundation, PO Box 9009, Portland, OR 97207-9009.
MCALISTERVILLE - Amos A. Varner, 87, of McAlisterville RR1, died at 9:32 a.m. Monday, Aug. 7, 2000, at Centre Community Hospital, State College. Born Aug. 13, 1912, in McAlisterville, he was the son of the late Philip C. and Ida M. (Wagner) Varner. His first wife, Thelma J. (Swartz) Varner, whom he married Nov. 19, 1936, died March 23, 1978. His second wife, Elsie I. (Shawver) Varner, whom he married Oct. 28, 1978, died Dec. 23, 1999. Surviving are: children, Palmer A. Varner, Thompsontown, Philip C. Varner, Oakland Mills, George E. Varner, Mifflintown RR2, and Mrs. Larry (Mae) Miller, Hooversville; stepsons, Norman Shawwer, McClure, Clair Shawver, Berry's Personal Care, Mifflintown, Guy W. Krepps, Mifflintown; brothers, Emory Varner, Richfield and John Varner, McAlisterville RR2; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; 11 step-great-grandchildren and two step-great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by brothers and sisters, Harvey Varner, in infancy, Charles Varner, Amelia Hepner, Mary Amey, Bernice Amey, and Abby Varner. He attended Red Bank School. He was employed by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation for 2 years and was a tanner and lumberman, all of his life, until his retirement in 1977. He was a member of the Church of the Open Door, Evendale, where he taught Sunday School. He was also a member of the Fayette Sportsman's Club. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and cutting firewood. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Ronald C. Sheaffer Funeral Home, 16 Westfall St., McAlisterville, with Pastor Joseph Heeg officiating. Interment will follow in Goodwill Cemetery, McAlisterville RR1. Friends may call from 4-9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, where family will be present from 7-9 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to: the Church of the Open Door, RR1, Box 902, Richfield, PA 17086 or to the charity of one's choice.
