Esther A. Varner
MCALISTERVILLE - Esther A. Varner, 86, of McAlisterville RR1, died at 8:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 20, 2000, at her residence. Born Nov. 15, 1913 in McAlisterville, she was a daughter of the late Samuel G. and Sallie (Snyder) Hepner. Her husband Charles R. Varner, whom she married Nov. 27, 1937, preceded her in death on Oct. 9, 1967. Surviving are: children, R.L. "Tim" Varner and Delbert R. Varner, both of McAlisterville, Mrs. Victor (Carol) Whitesel, Mifflintown RR3 and Mrs. David (Nancy) Stull, Middleburg RR4; brothers and sisters, Richard Hepner, Mifflintown, Samuel, Kenneth and Donald Hepner and Ruth Meiser, all of McAlisterville, Mary Wert, Manheim and Ferne Hepner, Mifflin; 14 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by brothers and sisters, Clarence Hepner, Marlin Hepner and Gladys Hepner. She attended Red Bank School. She was employed as a seamstress and utility girl for Lyon Fashions, McAlisterville before retiring in 1987. She was a member of Lauver's Mennonite Church, Richfield HCR 63 (Little Evendale). She was also a member of the Quilt Committee for the Juniata Mennonite School for many years. She enjoyed quilting, reading and spending time with her grandchildren. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Lauver's Mennonite Church, Richfield HCR63, with Pastor John W. Gehman officiating. Interment will be in the church Cemetery. Friends may call 4-9 p.m. Sunday at the Ronald C. Sheaffer Funeral Home, 16 Westfall St., McAlisterville, where the family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions may be made to the Juniata Mennonite School, PO Box 278, McAlisterville, PA 17049.

Martha L. Varner
MCALISTERVILLE - Martha L. Varner, 77, of McAlisterville, died at 4:35 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2000, at Brookline Manor, Mifflintown RR1. Born Feb. 19, 1923, in Evendale, she was a daughter of the late Issiac J. and Lily M. (Stuck) Gearhart. Her husband, Adam J. Varner, whom she married May 26, 1940, died March 12, 1995. Surviving are: sons, Frank R. Varner, Millerstown and Anthony R. Varner, McAlisterville; brother and sister, Roy Gearhart, Selinsgrove and May Long, McAlisterville; and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, James E. Varner; a daughter, Lillie M. Ebersole; brothers, John, William, George, Pete, and Frank Gearhart; and sisters, Pearl Naylor and Pauline Brown. She attended Evendale Grammar School. She retired from Empire Kosher Inc., Mifflintown in 1985 after 22 years of employment. She was a member of Stony Run Mission, Richfield RR1. She enjoyed baking, cooking, and canning. Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday at the Stony Run Mission, Richfield RR1, with the Rev. James A. Neimond Jr. officiating. Interment will be in St. John's United Methodist Cemetery, McAlisterville RR2. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. today at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to: Stony Run Mission, RR1, Box 596, Richfield, PA 17086. The Ronald C. Sheaffer Funeral Home, 16 Westfall St., McAlisterville, is in charge of arrangements.

Simon L. 'Luckie' Varner
McVEYTOWN - Simon L. "Luckie" Varner, 79, of Beverly Healthcare- William Penn, Lewistown, formerly of McVeytown, died at 12:45 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 12, 2000, at the nursing home. Born June 15, 1921, in Juniata County, he was a son of the late Simon L. and Laura (Wise) Varner, Sr. His wife, Helen I. (Keiser) Varner, whom he married Feb. 22, 1946, survives. Also surviving are: two sons; Dan R. Varner of Douglassville and David J. Varner of Albany, NY; two brothers, Harold Varner of Lewistown RD and Blair Varner of Port Royal; two sisters, Dolores Webster of Osceola Mills and Mrs. Roy (Olivia) Bowersox of Mifflintown RR3; a niece, Carmie Taylor, who was raised in his parents' home; and eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Denton K. Varner in 1990, an infant daughter, Sue Laurene Varner in 1948, and two sisters, Gladys and Beulah. He was a 1939 graduate of Juniata Joint High School, Mifflintown. He was a United States Army veteran, having served in World War II. He was a self-employed general contractor, and along with his wife, owned and operated the Coleman Hotel of Lewistown for over 20 years. He was a member of the McVeytown Presbyterian Church and the Men's Sunday School Class. He was also a member of the McVeytown Lions Club, United Commercial Travelers of Lewistown, BPO Elks No. 663 of Lewistown and Disabled American Veterans and an associate member of the Fraternal Order of Police. He was a former Mifflin County School Board member. He was a avid woodworker and enjoyed making furniture and toys. He also enjoyed gardening and raising fancy pigeons. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Harshbarger Funeral Home, 3 S. Market St., McVeytown, with the Rev. Jeanette Rapp and the Rev. Marian Hartman officiating. Interment will be in Mattawana Cemetery, McVeytown. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the McVeytown Fire Company, P.O. Box 336, McVeytown, PA 17051 or McVeytown Lions Club, P.O. Box 365, McVeytown, PA 17051.

Betty R. Wachs
LEWISTOWN - Betty R. Wachs, 68, of 276 W. Fifth St., Lewistown, died at 4 a.m. Monday, June 26, 2000, at her residence. Born Sept. 17, 1931, in Cleveland, Ohio, she was a daughter of the late Theodore C. and Elizabeth (Meszar) Wachs. She is survived by brothers and sister, Perry Wachs, Independence, Ohio, Ted Wachs, Parkman, Ohio, and Marlene Hollander, New Port Ritchey, Fla. She was a self-employed artist. She was a member of the Church of Christian Science. Services will be private and at the convenience of the family. Hoenstine Funeral Home Inc., 75 Logan St., Lewistown, is in charge of arrangements.

Bernice A. Heffelfinger Wagner
SHIPPENSBURG - Bernice A. Heffelfinger Wagner, 83, a resident of the Shippensburg Health Care Center, died Saturday morning, Nov. 4, 2000, at the center. Born Oct. 22, 1917, in Burnham, she was the daughter of the late Harold I. and Edythe (Duck) Harper. She was preceded in death by two husbands, Foster Heffelfinger and James Wagner. She is survived by a brother, Harold Harper, Lewistown; one niece and five nephews. She was preceded in death by two sisters. She was retired from Scotland School for Veteran's Children, where she worked as a houseparent. Earlier in life, she worked for the L 'Agilon Company, formerly of Shippensburg. She was a member of the Memorial Lutheran Church, the Shippensburg Historical Society, and the Falling Spring Court No. 139, Order of the Amaranth. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home Inc., 112 W. King St., Shippensburg, with the Rev. Bonnie B. Hoffman officiating. Interment will be at the convenience of the family in Mt. Rock Cemetery, Lewistown. There will be no viewing or visitation. Bernice E. Wagner
BEAVERTOWN - Bernice E. Wagner, 82, of Beavertown died at 5:20 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 16, 2000, at Brookline Manor, where she had been a resident for the past four months. Born Oct. 18, 1917, in Adams Township, Snyder County, she was a daughter of the late Forry I. and Mary Jane (Narehood) Fetterolf. Her husband, Raymond E. Wagner, whom she married Dec. 25, 1938, preceded her in death Feb. 17, 1985. Surviving are: children, Kay P. Kratzer and Karen E. Rager, both of Beavertown; sisters, Edna Fetterolf, Beavertown, Pauline Aurand, McAlisterville, Nellie Hackenberg, Middleburg RR1, and Josephine Coreau, Beavertown; six grandchildren, two step-grandsons and two step-great-grandsons. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Alma Bingman and Beatrice Flowers, and by two brothers, Myron Fetterolf and Roy Fetterolf. She was a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ, Beavertown, where she participated in the Pollyanna Sunday School Class. She retired from the former Charles T. Saylor Shirt Factory after many years as a seamstress. She enjoyed collectable glass, crocheting doilies and walking. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Paul's United Church of Christ with the Rev. Edward Henry officiating. Interment will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Beavertown. Friends may call 4-9 p.m. Tuesday at Aurand Funeral Homes, 316 W. Market St., Beavertown, with the family present 7-9 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul's United Church of Christ, Beavertown, PA 17813.

Emma L. Wagner
MIFFLIN - Emma L. Wagner, 92, of the Locust Grove Retirement Village, Mifflin HC 63, formerly of Mifflintown RR2 (Centre), died at 11:50 a.m. Tuesday, July 11, 2000, at the village. Born Jan. 11, 1908, in McClure RR, she was a daughter of the late Simon W. and Anna E. (Rager) Arnold. Her husband, Stewart Ellsworth Wagner, died May 8, 1964. Surviving are: children, Earl J. Wagner, Mifflintown, Mrs. Dale (Madalene "Queen") Graybill, Thompsontown RR2, Mrs. Boyd (Mary) Ferster, Cedar View Street, Mifflintown, Kenneth R. Wagner and Kermit J. Wagner, both of Mifflintown RR2, Mrs. David (Louella) Cisney, Port Royal RR1, and Roy Gene Wagner, McClure; 23 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by a son, Theodore E. "Pete" Wagner; a daughter, Eleanor Wagner; 12 brothers and sisters; three granddaughters, Lisa Kay Sigler, Sheila Michelle Wagner and Ellen Stong; one great-granddaughter, Larie R. Waite; and one great-great-granddaughter, Kassidy Grace Swartz. She was a homemaker and the proprietor of S.E. Wagner General Merchandise, Centre, retiring in 1964. She was a member of Centre Lutheran Church and Women's Bible Sunday School Class. She enjoyed visiting the home of her late sister, who lived in Forked River, N.J., crocheting, bowling, playing cards and watching the Phillies. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Centre Lutheran Church, Mifflintown RR2, with the Rev. Louise Reynolds officiating. Interment will be in Adams Cemetery, Mifflintown RR2. Friends may call from 7-9 p.m. Friday at Guss Funeral Home, 20 S. Third St., Mifflintown and from 10 a.m. until the time of services Saturday at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to Centre Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, RR2, Mifflintown, PA 17059.

Grace M. Wagner
MCCLURE - Grace M. Wagner, 87, of McClure, died at 9:45 p.m. Wednesday, May 24, 2000, at Beverly Healthcare-William Penn, where she had been a resident for a brief period. Born July 30, 1912, in Spring Township, Snyder County, she was a daughter of the late Harvey and Verna (Reich) Bilger. Her husband, Luther R. Wagner, whom she married in 1933, survives. Also surviving are: a son, Marvin L. Wagner, Beavertown RR1; a sister, Helen Goss, Penn Lutheran Village; and seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Frances A. Long, on May 18, 2000, and a brother, Marlin Bilger. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, McClure, where she taught Sunday School and participated in the choir for more than 50 years. In her early years, she worked at the former American Viscose and served on the McClure Borough Election Board. Her funeral service is at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Trinity Lutheran Church, McClure, with the Rev. Phil Thorsen officiating. Interment will be in the McClure Union Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:30 p.m. until the hour of service. Memorial contributions may be made to the Trinity Lutheran Church, McClure, PA 17841.
