LEWISTOWN - Marie A. Austin, 82, of 128 Austin Lane, Lewistown, died at 6:50 p.m. Sunday, May 20, 2001, at Lewistown Hospital. Born Nov. 1, 1918, in Lewistown, she was the daughter of the late William E. and Eva (Otto) Haller. Her husband, William E. Austin, died Nov. 15, 1956. Surviving are: children, Mrs. William (Nancy M.) Stoner Sr., Mrs. James (Marian V.) Kulp Sr., Andrew G. Austin, and Brian M. Austin, all of Lewistown, James M. Austin, McAlisterville, Shirley J. Virtue, Atlanta, Ga., Mrs. Hershel (Janet L.) Cram, Milroy, Mrs. Ronald (Gail I.) Knepper, Yeagertown, Mrs. Evan (Helen K.) Katz, Mechanicsburg and Mrs. Roger (Sharon A.) Guerrini, Baltimore, Md.; stepchildren, Betty L. Bloom, Yeagertown and William E. Austin Jr., Mattawana; a sister, Ruth Henry, Belltown; 34 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sons, Robert Austin and Richard Austin, two brothers and three sisters. She was a homemaker and a member of Bethel AME Church. She played the cymbals in the Lewistown Drum and Bugle Corps. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. today at the Bethel AME Church, with the Rev. Bernard Carpenter officiating. Interment will be in Lind Memorial Cemetery. Friends may call 12:30 p.m. until the time of the service today at the church. MIFFLIN - Florence S. Bailey, 91, of Locust Grove Retirement Village, Mifflin, formerly of Beavertown, died at 11:05 a.m. Sunday, July 8, 2001, at Locust Grove, where she had been a resident for the past 22 months. Born Oct. 12, 1909, in Middleburg, she was a daughter of the late William and Minnie (Dreese) Mitchell. Her husband, Joseph E. Bailey, whom she married Feb. 21, 1925, died Jan. 16, 1946. Surviving are: daughters, Mrs. Meade (Evalene E.) Kramer and Helen M. Knepp, both of Beaver Springs; a sister and two brothers, Grace Shambach, Russell Mitchell and Irvin Mitchell, all of Middleburg; three grandsons, five great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Charles, in infancy; a granddaughter, Donna Berger in 1995; a grandson, Robert Kramer in 1946; a great-granddaughter, Christie Furgison, in 1996; and a brother, Raymond Mitchell in 1992. In 1981, she retired from the former Charles T. Saylor Shirt Factory. Earlier in life, she worked at the former Middleburg Silk Mill and the former Beavertown Weaving Mill. She attended the Beavertown God's Missionary Church, Middleburg. Services will be held 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Beavertown chapel of Aurand Funeral Homes, 316 W. Market St., Beavertown, with the Rev. James Plank officiating. Interment will be in the Evangelical Cemetery, Penns Creek. Family will receive friends 12:30 p.m. until the time of service Wednesday at the funeral home. LEWISTOWN - Dorothy R. Baker, 86, of 25 Grand Parkway North, Lewistown, died at 1:35 p.m. Tuesday, June 26, 2001, at her residence. Born Dec. 14, 1914, in Lewistown, she was the daughter of the late Dr. John Palmer and Mary Grace (Pawling) Rothermel. Her husband, Wilson M. Baker, whom she married in 1946, survives. Also surviving are: children, Richard W. Baker, Alexandria, VA and Mrs. Michael A. (Nancy) Dermes, Hummelstown; and two grandsons. She was preceded in death by a sister, Kathryn Watkins. She received her degree in music from Ithaca University in New York. She taught high school music in Windham, NY. She was a member of the Lewistown Presbyterian Church, where she played the piano. She was also a member of the Mifflin County Garden Club and the Mifflin County Music Study Club, where she served as past president and treasurer. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Lewistown Presbyterian Church, 17 E. Third St., Lewistown, with the Rev. Robert Zorn officiating. Interment will be made in St. Mark's Cemetery, Lewistown. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. today at the Barr Funeral Home, 120 Logan St., Lewistown. LEWISTOWN - Elizabeth M. Baker, 84, of Ohesson Manor Nursing Home, formerly of Lawler Place, Lewistown, died at 2:20 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001, at Ohesson Manor. Born May 15, 1916, in Lewistown, she was a daughter of the late Herbert and Katie (Kratzer) Cavanaugh. Her husband, Enoch W. Baker, whom she married Dec. 28, 1935, preceded her in death on June 12, 1957. Surviving are: children, Lloyd Cavanaugh, Lewistown RD4, Ethel M. Wileman, Lewistown, Mary J. Barnes, Hebron, OH, Mrs. William (Donna) Sunday, Milroy, Jay W. Baker, Philadelphia, Robert L. Baker, Lewistown RD4 and Shirley E. Baker, McClure; 29 grandchildren, 47 great-grandchildren and 18 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Dorothy Diven, and two sons, John O. Baker and James W. Baker. She was also preceded in death by sisters and brothers, Kathryn Weaver, Edith Gutshall, William Cavanaugh, John Cavanaugh and Harry Cavanaugh. She was a homemaker who was employed as a cook at Red's Diner for many years. She also worked at Bell's Laundry and at Empire Kosher, Mifflintown. She was a member of the Women of the Moose No. 212, Lewistown, and a member of the Yeagertown Fire Company and the former Fame Fire Company. Her funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. today at the Harshbarger Funeral Home, 3 S. Market St., McVeytown, with the Rev. Leon Clayberger officiating. Interment will be in Juniata Memorial Park, Lewistown. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 2040 Linglestown Road, Suite 106, Harrisburg, PA 17110.
THOMPSONTOWN - Hobart S. "Hob" Baker Sr., 88, of Meda Nipple Convalescent Home, Thompsontown RR1, formerly of McClure, died at 2:30 a.m. Sunday, March 11, 2001, at the Lewistown Hospital. He had been in ill health for the past three years. Born April 10, 1912, in McClure, he was a son of the late Cluney and Viola (Steely) Baker. His wife, Mary S. Bair, whom he married in 1938, preceded him in death on March 30, 1996. He is survived by a daughter, Carole A. Cubbler, Shippensburg and a son, Hobart S. "Bud" Baker, Thompsontown; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Bertrice Swanger and three brothers Warren, Dale and Archie Baker. From the age of 14, he was involved in the publication of the former McClure Plain Dealer, which was founded by his father in 1905. Upon his father's death in 1946 he purchased the business and continued to operate the newspaper through 1974, when it was sold to the Middleburg Post. After the newspaper was sold, he continued to print custom orders until the early l990s. During the 1940s, he served McClure as a Justice of the Peace. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, McClure and the B.P.O.E., Lewistown. Earlier in life, he was active in the West End Sportsmen's Club. He loved hunting, especially ruffed grouse and fishing with his grandchildren. Graveside services will be held 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the McClure Union Cemetery. The McClure chapel of Aurand Funeral Homes Inc. is in charge of arrangements.
HUNTINGDON - Karen Sue Baker, 55, of RD 1 Box 216, Huntingdon (Porter Township), died at 3 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2001, at her home. Born Feb. 19, 1946, in Lewistown, she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Myra (Zeider) Wagner Sr. Her husband, Francis L. Baker, whom she married on Sept. 26, 1975, in Virginia, survives. Also surviving are: children, Deanna Pinkham, El Dorado, AR, Vanessa Gahagan, State College, James Gahagan Jr., Yeagertown, and Christopher Gahagan, Lewistown; brothers and sisters, Joseph Wagner Jr., Yeagertown, Dora Jane Stewart, Lewistown, Mary Ruble, McClure, and James Wagner and George Wagner, both of Lewistown; and a granddaughter. She was a homemaker and a Protestant by faith. A private funeral service will be held at the convenience of the family, with the Rev. James L. Blair officiating. Interment will be in Huntingdon Memorial Gardens. Friends may call 1-3 p. m. Thursday at the Robert E. Peters Funeral Home, 1106 Mifflin St., Huntingdon.
SOUTH OGDEN, UTAH - Nathaniel Gabriel Baker-Livingston, 1, of 730 Lavina Drive, South Ogden, Utah, died at 9:09 a.m. Friday, Nov. 30, 2001, at the Davis Hospital & Medical Center, Layton, Utah. Born Nov. 6, 2000, in Salt Lake City, Utah, he is the son of Gary Edward Livingston and Brooke Renee Baker. Surviving are: a brother, Joshua Livingston, U.S. Air Force, Yokota Air Force Base, Japan, and two sisters, Elizabeth Baker-Livingston and Alexandra Baker-Livingston, both at home; maternal grandparents, Ray and Carolyn Baker, Mifflintown, and paternal grandfather, Edward Livingston, Lakeview, Ohio. His funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church, Mifflintown, with Pastor Ronald L. Shupe officiating. Interment will be in the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville. Friends may call from 9 a.m. until the time of the service Wednesday, at the church. The Mifflintown Chapel of Brown Funeral Homes, Inc., 100 Bridge Street, Mifflintown, is in charge of the arrangements.
MADISON, Ohio - Frank M. Ball, 76, of Madison, Ohio, formerly of Lewistown, died Tuesday, March 6, 2001, at Lake East Hospital, Painesville, Ohio. Born Aug. 21, 1924, in Nanty Glo, he was the son of the late Frank and Mary Ann (Flynn) Ball. His wife, Donna M. (Eaton) Ball, whom he married June 8, 1953 in Lewistown, survives. Also surviving are: Karen D. Winton, Madison, Ohio, Betsy L. Ball, Westlake, Ohio, and Robert E. Ball, Charlotte, NC; sisters, Lois Loudenslager and LaVonne Ball, both of Lewistown and Betty Gruver, Gaithersburg, Md.; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert M. Ball and Clifford Ball. He was a veteran, having served in the Army Combat Engineers in the European Theatre during World War II. He had worked for the American Viscose/FMC Corporation, the Diamond Shamrock Corporation, the Erie Coke & Chemical Company, and Midwest Materials. He was a member of the Chapel United Methodist Church and a volunteer at Lake County Council on Aging. He enjoyed gardening and was an avid sports fan. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Behm Family Funeral Home, 26 River St., Madison, Ohio, with the Rev. John Germaine officiating. Interment will be in Madison Memorial Park, Madison, Ohio. Friends may call 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
