John C. Alleger III
(December 9, 1956 - October 4, 2014)
John C. Alleger, III, 57, of Bartonsville, passed away at home on October 4, 2014 surrounded by his family.
Born in East Stroudsburg, John was a lifelong resident of Monroe County. Aside from the few years he lived in Snydersville, John was a resident of Bartonsville all his life.
John is survived by his mother Marion (Miller) Alleger of Bartonsville, who along with his father, the late John C. Alleger, Jr. provided him and his sister with an idyllic upbringing. He is also survived by his sister Patricia Adelmann of Stroudsburg, who endured what must have seemed like an endless childhood of relentless teasing at John's hands only to become his most loving and outspoken advocate during the final year of his life, and by her husband, Eric Adelmann, who unselfishly drove John to Philadelphia for numerous appointments at the University of Pennsylvania and sat with John for many hours during his final days at home. John is also survived by his nephew John Adelmann, who with his uncle's passing becomes the sole owner of his grandfather's John Deere farm tractor; and by his niece Rebecca Adelmann, whom her Uncle John thought was incredibly adorable, even though he didn't tell her so nearly often enough.
John was divorced in 1985 and never remarriage. Although he never had any children of his own, he felt especially blessed to have been a mentor to his friend Andrew Schleicher, whom he thought of not only as a friend, but also as the son he never had.
John was a graduate of Pocono Mountain High School and East Stroudsburg University. He was an elementary school teacher for 34 years in the Pleasant Valley School District, where he taught 3rd and 4th grade before retiring in 2012. John did his best to make learning fun and was always humbled when parents requested that their son or daughter be placed in his classroom.
John was rarely serious and considered it a waste of time to dwell on anything but the positive things in life. He loved the sound of laughter, and while never particularly fond of gossips, small yapping dogs or covered dish dinners, the only things he truly hated were asparagus and brussel sprouts.
John marched to the beat of his own drum. He preferred two lane roads over interstates, row boats over cruise ships, and railroads over airplanes. He longed for little and was content with simple things: driving in the country, exploring cluttered antique shops, and walking the aisles of hardware stores.
Owing to his grandparents and elderly aunts and uncles, John developed a love of history at a very young age that he retained throughout his life. He especially enjoyed exploring old cemeteries, doing family history library research, and visiting small town historical societies and museums.
John also had a life-long fascination with railroads, both toy and full-sized. He never missed an opportunity to watch or ride on a train. There was always a train under his Christmas tree.
John was a member of St. John's Evangelical Congregational Church in Bartonsville. He served as its Ministry Council president from 1996 until the time of his death. John worked for his church in many other capacities and until his illness prevented it, was included in the rotation of Sunday morning worship leaders.
He was a member of the Pocono-Jackson Historical Society, the Monroe County Historical Association, the Friends of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, and numerous other historical societies, and collectors' groups in both the United States and Canada.
John was grateful at the end of his life that he had been blessed by God with enough time to allow him to give away his most important collections to the individuals and institutions he knew would appreciate them. He kept busy during the final days of his life working on his family history, writing this obituary and visiting with those he loved.
There will be a visitation from 7:00 to 8:30PM on Thursday, October 9, at William H. Clark Funeral Home, 1003 Main St., Stroudsburg and from 10:00 to 11:00AM on Friday, October 10, at St. John’s E.C. Church, 6014 Custard Road, (village of Bartonsville), Stroudsburg. A memorial service celebrating John's life will begin at 11:00AM Friday at the church officiated by his friends, Rev. Paul Miller and Rev. Dave Long. As a follower of Christ, John remained confident throughout his illness about where he was going at the end of his life and into whose arms he was going to fall. It was John’s wish that his memorial service be a joyful event having many more smiles than tears. Following the service, John will be interred in Custard's Cemetery.
At John's request, in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts in his name may be made to St. John's Evangelical Congregational Church, 6014 Custard Road, Stroudsburg, PA 18360.
