Valerie Parsons
(June 24, 1915 - August 30, 2015)
Valerie Lee Parsons, 100, of Stroudsburg, passed away August 30, 2015.
She was born Valerie Marie Soukup on June 24, 1915, to Joseph and Marie Soukup in what was then the Czech neighborhood of New York City. When Valerie was seven the family moved to Stroudsburg, which has always been home to her. She graduated from Stroudsburg High School in 1932 and went on to study for a year in New York at the Faegen School of Dramatic Art where she focused on radio, an interest she was to pursue later in her life. She returned to Stroudsburg to marry Alexander "Zandy" Hartman Lee in 1934. When Zandy was drafted into the Army Valerie worked, like many wives during World War II, in a munitions plant. When the war was over Zandy became the proprietor of Lee's Soda Shop in Stroudsburg and Valerie was once again a homemaker. She was soon given the opportunity to return to radio when Stroudsburg got its own station, WVPO. Every Saturday morning Valerie Lee, the Story Lady, was on the air telling folk and fairy tales to Monroe County's children. She also did a show on WVPO called "Listen to Val" covering news of interest to women.
Valerie was active in the Junior Women's Club, and was especially devoted to volunteering as a Gray Lady at the Pocono Hospital. Inspired by her deep concern for the world's children, she organized the first Trick or Treat for UNICEF program in Stroudsburg. She shared Zandy's love of boating and the two of them enjoyed many boat trips to Canada together. In 1968 when Zandy retired they moved to Englewood, Florida. Once again Valerie was involved in volunteering and also gave well-received book talks at many community centers in the area. In 1975 Zandy Lee, her beloved husband of 41 years, died suddenly. In 1984 she was remarriage to Joseph G. Parsons of Stroudsburg. They moved to Weir's Cave, Virginia, where she stayed until Joe's death, moving then back home to Stroudsburg. In Stroudsburg she enjoyed the companionship of former SHS classmate Charlie Widmer.
Valerie Lee Parsons was dearly beloved by her family and was known by all who knew her as a warm, gracious and caring woman with a beautiful smile. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Stroudsburg.
She is survived by a daughter, Zandra Moberg Price of Philadelphia; two grandchildren, Rebecca Lee Roter of Nicholson, Georgia and Dr. Kenneth Moberg of Decatur, GA; and four great-grandchildren, Rachel Roter, Alexander Moberg, Annika Moberg and Genevieve Moberg.
A memorial service is planned, the date to be determined later.
Donations in Valerie's name may be made to the Stroudsburg United Methodist Church or to a charity which benefits children.
