Dr. Wilfred “Will” Russell Berger, 76, of Watsontown, passed away Wednesday, September 8, 2010, at SUN Home Hospice Care Center, Sunbury.
Will was born March 17, 1934 in Watsontown. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ervin R. Berger and Clara M. (Phillips) Berger Shook Rae, and his loving wife, Patricia L. (McClintock) Berger.
Following graduation from Watsontown High School in 1953, he received a Bachelor of Science degree from East Stroudsburg University, a Masters in Education from Ohio State University, and a Doctorate in Physical Education from the University of Connecticut (UCONN).
He was a longtime member of First Evangelical Lutheran Church, Watsontown.
Will started the Connecticut Senior Olympics Chapter in 1979 and passionately chaired and championed this cause until his retirement from the chapter in 1999. In 1994 he retired from the University of Bridgeport, where he was a Professor of the Arnold College Division from 1964 to 1994. Throughout his career he was involved in coaching wrestling, football, tennis, weight-lifting, baseball and football. Will was a football and wrestling official and very active in sports of all kinds. His favorite baseball team was the New York Yankees. Will was recognized by various organizations in Fairfield County for his contributions in the areas of sports, academia, and church activities. He was also an avid hunter, camper and fisherman, and will be sorely missed by his family.
Surviving are three children, Susan E. Berger and spouse William “Bill” Buchner of Fairfield, CT; Dawn M. Lovell and partner Brian Jobe of Sacramento, CA; and Julie A. Klugh of Watsontown; eight grandchildren, Brian Petchkis, Dan Buchner, Keith Lovell Jr., Kristen Lockhart, Jake “John John” Lovell, Jennifer Klugh, Sarah Klugh Gabel and husband Ryan Gabel, and LCpl Stephan Klugh; nine great-grandchildren; one brother, Harold Shook and wife Nancy of Watsontown; their two children (Will’s niece and nephew), Penny (nee Reynolds) Raup and Ken Reynolds, and their four children and spouses.
Friends will be received Friday, Sept. 10, from 4 to 6:30 p.m. at Cronrath-Grenoble Funeral Home, 308 Main St., Watsontown. There will be a brief time of reflection at 6:30 p.m. led by his minister, Rev. James H. Fladland. Burial will be held privately in Watsontown Cemetery.
The family welcomes flowers; however, if desired, memorial contributions may be made to either SUN Home Hospice Care Center, 350 N. 11th Street, 3rd Floor, Sunbury, PA 17801 or Kramm’s Nursing Home, 245 E. Eighth Street, Watsontown, PA 17777.
Pauline Elizabeth Wertman
Pauline Elizabeth Wertman, 92, a resident at Kramm’s in Watsontown the past 5 years, and formerly of 118 E. Third St., Watsontown, passed away Friday, September 3, 2010, at the Evangelical Community Hospital emergency room.
Born May 13, 1918, in Lewisburg, she was a daughter of the late William and Lula (Waite) Frederick. On Feb. 6, 1936, she marriage Raymond A. Wertman, who preceded her in death on March 30, 1985 after 49 years of marriage.
Pauline worked in the finishing and assembly departments of the former Philco Ford-Zenith Corp. in Watsontown for 30 years, retiring in 1982.
An active member of the Watsontown United Methodist Church for over 50 years, she participated in many church organizations. Pauline was also active in Neighbors Helping Neighbors. She enjoyed traveling and going on bus trips, as well as crocheting items for her children and grandchildren.
Surviving are two sons, Charles W. Wertman and wife Holly of Montgomery and Paul A. “Pete” Wertman and companion Janet of Watsontown; three daughters, Lulu Muffly and husband Ray and Mary Kemrer and husband Robert, all of Watsontown, and Luella Winder and husband Wilbur of Montgomery; one brother, Carl Frederick and wife Dolly of Snydertown; three sisters, Miriam Bower and Jo Ann Golder, both of Watsontown, and Doris Jean Waltman of New York; 16 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by a son, Harold L. Wertman who died in 1961; a grandson, Rodney Winder who died in 1986; and a great-grandson, Jason Wertman.
Friends will be received Tuesday, Sept. 7, from noon to 2:00 p.m. at the Watsontown United Methodist Church, 1319 Eighth St. Drive, Watsontown, where the funeral will be held at 2:00 p.m. officiated by her minister, Pastor Douglas M. Eberly. Burial will follow in Watsontown Cemetery.
The family will provide the flowers and suggests memorial contributions be made to the Watsontown United Methodist Church Campus for Christ (Building Fund), 1319 Eighth St. Drive, Watsontown, PA 17777.
The family is being assisted by Cronrath-Grenoble Funeral Home, 308 Main St., Watsontown.
Elizabeth M. Morrone
Elizabeth M. Morrone, 83, of Watsontown, passed away on Monday, August 23, 2010 at her residence.
She was born February 22, 1927, in Altoona, a daughter of the late Nunzio and Agata (Salina) Cataldo. She was marriage for 52 years to Salvadore S. Morrone, who preceded her in death on September 4, 2002.
Elizabeth was a graduate of Altoona High School, worked and retired as a telephone operator and enjoyed participating in T.O.P.S. She also enjoyed crocheting, cooking and baking, and was known especially for her delicious cookies.
She was a member of St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, Milton.
Surviving are two daughters and one son-in-law, Donna M. and Keith Schrode of Milton and Deborah A. Lewis of Watsontown; one son and daughter-in-law, Steven R. and Jennifer Morrone of Sicklerville, NJ; six grandchildren, Michelle Angelo, Danielle Brown, Janine and Jacob Lewis and Sophia and Nina Morrone; five great-grandchildren; one brother, Armand Cataldo of Altoona and two sisters and one brother-in-law, Helen Lioy of Altoona and Josephine and Joseph Lustick of Waynesboro.
She was preceded in death by four brothers, Anthony, Thomas, Albert and Samuel Cataldo and two sisters, Mary DelGrosso and Anna Renzo.
Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday with a prayer vigil at 8, led by Deacon Richard Owen of Sacred Heart Parish, Lewisburg and from 9 to 10 a.m. Friday at Cronrath-Grenoble Funeral Home, 308 Main Street, Watsontown.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday at her church, 109 Broadway, Milton, with the Rev. Joseph Fennessy as celebrant. Burial will follow in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Milton.
Elizabeth’s family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to Dr. Michael Brown and staff and VNA Crossings Hospice for the care and support provided to their mother.
Sharon Elaine Gagnon
Sharon Elaine (Barger) Gagnon, 43, of 512 Shakespeare Ave., Milton, passed away Sunday, August 15, 2010, at the Gatehouse in Williamsport.
Born October 23, 1966, in Lewisburg, she was a daughter of the late Elmer Glenn Barger and Edith Coup Barger, who survives. On June 26, 2010, she and her husband, Jesse D. Gagnon, observed their 22nd wedding anniversary.
A 1984 graduate of Warrior Run High School, she attended Juniata College in Huntingdon for two years. She worked in medical billing for the psychiatric department of Susquehanna Health Systems at the Divine Providence Hospital campus until January 2010, when she left for health reasons.
Sharon very much enjoyed reading, particularly science fiction and romance books. She was fond of traveling and especially liked vacationing with her family. Sharon loved her family and her co-workers at Susquehanna Health, whom she considered to be her extended family.
Surviving in addition to her husband and mother, of Milton, are two sons, Jonathan D. Gagnon and Jared M. Gagnon, both at home; one brother and sister-in-law, Tracy L. and Nancy Barger of Pensacola, FL; and three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Glenda and Robert Artley, Sr. of Milton, Holly Graffius of Carlisle, and Ruth and Stan Leeds of Huber Heights, Ohio.
She was predeceased by her father, grandparents, and brother, Timothy G. Barger.
Friends will be received to remember and celebrate Sharon’s life on Thursday, Aug. 19, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Cronrath-Grenoble Funeral Home, 308 Main St., Watsontown.
The family would like to thank the Gatehouse for their excellent care. Flowers will be accepted for the Thursday Celebration of Life gathering; however, in lieu of a floral tribute the family suggests a gift in Sharon’s memory be made to the Gatehouse, 1100 Grampian Blvd., Williamsport, PA 17701.
