Gladys Marie Diehl, 88, of 6 East 3rd St. Watsontown, passed away Wednesday, December 1, 2010, at Evangelical Community Hospital in Lewisburg.
Born in Lewis Township, Union County on August 5, 1922, she was a daughter of the late Leroy and Hattie (Walter) Rearick. Her husband of 37 years, John “Ed” Diehl, preceded her in death on June 12, 1978.
She attended Milton Area Schools and retired from Rishel Furniture in Williamsport where she was a laborer.
Surviving are one brother, Glenn Rearick of West Milton and his wife, Betty; one sister-in-law, Irene Rearick of Milton and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Bryson Rearick and Lee Rearick and a sister, Pauline Shemory.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, at 9:00 am in the Watsontown Cemetery. Officiating will be Rev. Douglas M. Eberly of the Watsontown United Methodist Church.
The family is being assisted by Cronrath-Grenoble Funeral Home, 308 Main Street, Watsontown.
Pete Aiken
Pete Aiken, 58, of 324 Fairmont Drive, Watsontown, passed away Thursday, December 16, 2010 at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.
Born November 5, 1952 in Lewes, Delaware, he was a son of the late James Levi and Theresa (Broeders) Aiken. He and his wife of 37 years, the former Susan Hendrickson, were marriage January 27, 1973.
A graduate of Kennett High School, he spent 15 years working as a land surveyor for George Regester Jr. & Sons, Kennett Square. In 1976 he went to work for the Pennsylvania Game Commission, where he became a wildlife conservation officer and land management supervisor.
Pete was extremely fond of his hunting dogs, whom he affectionately referred to as his “kids,” and was a member of NAVHDA. He enjoyed bird hunting, dog training and annual trips to North Dakota with his “kids,” Sam, Buddy and Maggie. Pete also was a huge football and baseball sports fan.
In addition to his wife he is survived by one son, Philip B. Aiken of Muncy; two daughters, Erica M. Aiken and Rachel E. Aiken, both of Watsontown; one brother and sister-in-law, James R. and Carol Aiken of Chadds Ford; and three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Margaret “Peggy” and Carl Slaughter of Wilmington, Del., Mary “Beck” Dolbow of Alexandria, Virginia, and Joan and Pat Przywara of Kennett Square.
Friends will be received Tuesday from 11 a.m. to noon at Watsontown United Methodist Church, 1319 Eighth Street Drive, Watsontown, where a memorial service will be held at noon. Officiating will be his pastor, Rev. Douglas M. Eberly.
The family will provide the flowers and suggests memorial contributions be made to Watsontown United Methodist Church, 1319 Eighth Street Drive, Watsontown, PA 17777.
Milford "Juny" Sampsell
Milford “Juny” Sampsell, 83, of 177 Seagrave Drive, Watsontown, died Tuesday, February 15, 2010 at his residence.
Born June 3, 1927, in Watsontown, he was a son of the late David and Blanche (Kuhns) Sampsell. He and his wife, the former Dolores “Dodie” Hafer, maintained their union for over 40 years.
Following his service in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II Juny worked most of his life as a building contractor and land developer. He was instrumental in overseeing the growth of the Clear Meadows housing development. Earlier in his career he was a painter, working with his brother Franklin, and later on he built homes for the former Claster Lumber Co. Juny possessed a great talent for designing and building things with his hands. He was an extremely hard worker, but put his family first, and was always available to help others. Juny was extremely fond of dogs, including his two Dobermans.
He was a life member of the Clyde F. Mowrer American Legion Post #323, Watsontown. Juny was well known in the West Branch Baseball League, and played for the Watsontown Senators.
Surviving in addition to his wife, are one son and daughter-in-law, Craig and Valerie Sampsell; one daughter and son-in-law, Debra and Ralph Heater; two grandchildren, Miranda (Gerald) Bailey and Michael Heater; one great-grandson, Gavin Bailey; three step-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren, all of Watsontown.
In addition to his parents he was predeceased by four brothers, James, Herman, Franklin, and Gordon, and three sisters, Helen Lehman, Betty Taylor and Martha Ranck.
In honoring the wishes of Mr. Sampsell, there will be no services. The family suggests contributions in his memory be made to Mostly Mutts, c/o Henry Gross, Treasurer, P.O. Doyle E. Moore
Doyle E. Moore, 84, of Mexico Road, Milton, entered into eternal rest on Thursday, March 3, 2011 at Kramm Healthcare Center, Milton.
He was born November 17, 1926 in Watsontown, a son of the late Clark and Madelin (Johnson) Moore. He marriage the former Helen (Walter) on June 12, 1948 and remained truly devoted to her during their 62 years of marriage.
Doyle grew up during the great depression and served his country as a member of the 17th Airborne Parachute Division. He fought in the in the Battle of the Bulge and made his final combat jump behind enemy lines in the Allied invasion of Germany. While fighting in the European Theater, Doyle earned multiple combat medals including the Bronze star. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army in 1946. He was employed as a supervisor at Philco-Ford, Watsontown for 36 years until the plant closed in the 80’s. He then worked for Rishel’s, Williamsport where he retired in 1988
He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles #1208, Milton, the Muffley-Huff Post #8206 VFW, Turbotville and Clyde F. Mowrer American Legion Post #323, Watsontown.
Doyle was an avid woodworker, crafting many beautiful projects for his family. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing and bowling.
His greatest love was being with his wife Helen. Together, Doyle and Helen visited all fifty states. Their love for each other was extraordinary. Every time Doyle left the home he would always hug and kiss Helen and tell her that he loved her.
In addition to his wife, Doyle is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Larry E. Moore, of Linglestown, and Gary T. and Harriet T. Moore of Milton; one sister and brother-in-law, Jessie and Carl Rovenalt, of Milton; three grandchildren, Shawn Moore of Milton, Steph Murray and Jeremy Moore both of Montandon; and three great grandchildren, Riley, Addison and Tyler Murray of Montandon.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Claude, Robert, Donald and Ivan Moore and a daughter-in-law, Ruth Marie Moore who died December 24, 2010.
Friends will be received from Noon to 1 p.m. Monday, March 7, 2011 at Cronrath-Grenoble Funeral Home, 308 Main Street, Watsontown where a memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Officiating will be Rev. Douglas J. Seagle, pastor of St. John’s United Church of Christ, Milton.
The family will provide the flowers and suggests memorial contributions be made to Southern Care, Inc. 190 Choate Circle, Suite 2, Montoursville, PA 17754.
Betty L. Ranck
Betty L. Ranck, 92, of 1350 Wertman Rd., Watsontown, died Saturday, March 19, 2011 at her home.
Born August 8, 1918 in Spring Garden, she was a daughter of the late John O. and Elisabeth (McCormick) Snoddy. On November 27, 1941 she marriage Clement H. Ranck. He preceded her in death on March 4, 1992.
Betty was a 1936 graduate of Watsontown High School and a 1940 graduate of Williamsport Hospital School of Nursing, where she received her degree as a Registered Nurse.
She was a member of the White Deer Valley Baptist Church, Allenwood.
Betty was a member of Watsontown Chapter #282 Order of the Eastern Star. She enjoyed playing cards with her friends and loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, James and Linda Ranck of Watsontown; two daughters and sons-in-law, Beverly Ann and George Reginald Gardner of Buffalo, NY and Cindy and David Tanner of Watsontown; one brother, John M. Snoddy of Allenwood; seven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received from 10 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 26 at the White Deer Valley Baptist Church, 572 White Deer Baptist Church Rd., Allenwood, where the funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Officiating will be Interim Pastor Mike Deal. Burial will follow in Uniontown Cemetery, Allenwood.
The family will provide the flowers and suggests remembrances be made to the White Deer Valley Baptist Church, 572 White Deer Baptist Church Rd., Allenwood, PA 17810.
