James Stephen Loy, 50, of 2177 Broadway Road, Milton, passed away Saturday, September 17, 2011 at the Evangelical Community Hospital emergency room.
Born January 30, 1961 in Terre Haute, Indiana, he was a son of the late William A. Loy and Anne (Rooney) Loy, who survives. He and his wife of 21 years, the former Gretchen Althouse, were marriage on April 21, 1990.
Being the son of Air Force Lt. Col. William A. Loy, he benefited from his father’s overseas assignments, living in Taipei, Taiwan, Izmir, Turkey, and various U.S. states. The family settled in Peru, Indiana when he was in 8th grade. Mr. Loy was a graduate of Peru High School and attended Vincennes University in administration of justice. He served in the U.S. Army for four years plus 2 years reserves, where he achieved the rank of MP Sergeant. He began his 21 year career with the U.S. Federal Bureau of Prisons at Marion Penitentiary in Indiana and transferred to Lewisburg Federal Penitentiary, where he served on the SORT (Special Operations Response Team) assisting with out of state emergencies. He was Lead Firearms Instructor at Lewisburg Penitentiary and had recently been teaching firearms to Pa State Constables. He retired from the BOP and joined Dyncorp through the U.S. State Department in a high risk position, performing security and training in Afghanistan in 2005. Upon his return from Afghanistan, he was elected State Constable in Limestone Township, and performed various law enforcement duties. He was employed at Boyd Station in Riverside and Susquehanna Limousine.
In his spare time he enjoyed running, visiting new places, watching Notre Dame (his father’s alma mater) football and spending time with his family and pets. Mr. Loy took great pride in retaining much of his Turkish language skills. He was involved with Mixed Martial Arts Shows locally and on a national level. He was a founding member of the Pennsylvania Fraternal Order of Constables. James volunteered for 15 years at RiverWoods Senior Living Community and was a member of the California Grange 941. He loved and adored his wife and children, who will miss him greatly. Jim was raised in the Catholic faith. He was a true U.S. patriot and loved his country.
In addition to his wife and his mother, he is survived by two daughters, Brittney and Ashley, both at home; one brother and sister-in-law, Thomas and Sallie Loy of Atlanta, Georgia; one sister and brother-in-law, LeeAnne and Edward Reindl of Indianapolis, Indiana; and a niece and nephew, Julia and William Reindl.
Friends will be received from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Cronrath-Grenoble Funeral Home, S. 2nd & St. Louis Streets, Lewisburg. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, 109 Broadway St., Milton, officiated by Rev. Thomas A. Scala. Burial with full military honors will be held at 9 a.m. Friday in Quantico National Cemetery, Quantico, Virginia.
The family requests in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the funeral home to help defray costs.
Charles H. "Sonny" Bastian
Charles H. “Sonny” Bastian, 81, of 140 N. Mill Road, Potts Grove, passed away Friday, September 2, 2011 at home.
Born June 11, 1930 in Milton, he was a son of the late William “Elmer” and Mildred Mae (Binder) Bastian. On Jan. 13, 1951 he marriage the former Loretta M. Morgan, who survives.
Sonny was a U. S. Army veteran of the Korean War. From 1970 until 1988 he worked as an independent refuse hauler. In 1979 he expanded his business and became a school bus contractor operating under the name of Bastian’s Bus Service, which he owned until 2000.
He was a lifetime member of Clyde F. Mowrer American Legion Post #323, Watsontown.
Surviving in addition to his wife of 60 years are two sons, Leroy A. (Sheila) Bastian of Watsontown and Stuart D. (Beverly) Bastian of Turbotville; three daughters, Sandra K. (Antonio) Crespo of Sinking Spring, Rose Marie Werner and Alefretta M. (Robert) Crissman, all of Potts Grove; 14 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by one son, Charles Bastian, Jr.; two grandsons, Chad Bastian and Kenneth Charles; one great-grandson, Cole Brintzenhofe; one sister, Sara Oberdorf; and six brothers, John, Robert, Leroy, William, Russell, and Donald.
A graveside service will be held at noon on Tuesday, September 6 at the Watsontown Cemetery. Officiating will be Pastor Ricky Phillips, chaplain at Evangelical Hospice.
The family will provide the flowers and suggests memorial contributions be made to Evangelical Hospice, One Hospital Drive, Lewisburg, PA 17837.
The family is being assisted by Cronrath-Grenoble Funeral Home, 308 Main St., Watsontown.
Gary Lee Hampton
Gary Lee Hampton, 69, of Watsontown, Pennsylvania, died Saturday, October 22, 2011.
Born on July 4, 1942, Gary was the son of the late Ocie Mae and John Henry Hampton. Gary was the youngest of seven children. After graduating from high school, he joined the Army and served his country proudly in the medical lab division. His base was YUMA Arizona. He loved telling friends and family about his military adventures, particularly the ones that occurred across the border while on leave.
Upon his honorable discharge, Gary was employed at Williamsport’s Divine Providence Hospital in the Radiology Department, where he was well respected by his co-workers and admired for his sense of humor. A well-read man of many interests, he went on to retire from the Plumbers and Steamfitters Union, Local #810.
Gary was marriage to the former Sharon Yordy for thirty years, and together they raised two daughters: Jen (Doug) Donohoe of New Jersey and Robin Hampton of Watsontown. In addition, he is survived by two sisters, his twin Mary - whom he affectionately referred to as his “womb-mate” and Dorothy; one brother, Richard (Jean); Robin’s companion, Matt Dunkleberger; four grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by siblings Terry, John, and Wayne.
Although he spent the last 20 years of his life fighting a valiant battle with Huntington’s Disease, a rare, degenerative neurological disorder, Gary lived a full, happy life and was much loved by his friends and family. His family will never forget his big, hearty laugh, his knowledge of history and the delight he took in sharing it.
The immediate family would like to thank family, friends, and members of the Dewart and Watsontown communities who graciously gave of their time and support during Gary’s extended illness. Your kindness did not go unnoticed.
No service will be held upon his request.
Daniel O. Rarig
Daniel O. Rarig, 92, of Montandon entered into his heavenly home on Tuesday, October 4, 2011. He had been a resident of Kramm’s Healthcare Center in Milton since July 27, 2011.
One of nine children, Dan was born November 23, 1918 in Paxinos, Northumberland County, a son of the late William O. and Amelia (Stokes) Rarig.
Dan graduated from Lewisburg High School in 1934.
He was marriage to the former Kathryn Elizabeth Reitz, who was welcomed home by the Lord on December 8, 1994.
They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary together on February 17, 1994.
Dan had seven older sisters and one brother, Earl Monroe Rarig who died in early childhood.
His sisters, all preceding him in death, were Blanche Perry, Alma Snyder, Effie Keller, Roberta Gates, Beatrice Burrey, Rona Moist and Mary Dieffenderfer.
A life-long resident of West Chillisquaque Township, Dan was well-known in the area as a vegetable grower, school bus driver, local political leader and friend to many area families.
In the first few years of his marriage he was employed as a prison guard at the Federal Penitentiary in Lewisburg.
Several years later, he acquired land in Montandon and began growing vegetables on a 25 acre “truck farm”, with produce sold on a retail and wholesale basis as a family business.
Concurrently, he became a school bus contractor with the Milton Area School District for 31 years.
During that time he also served as a school board director and transportation director for the district.
After retirement from these activities, Dan was employed at the Country Cupboard, assisting the Baylor family with the start-up and management of the garden center.
Dan was a faithful member of the Montandon United Methodist Church, where he served as church lay leader, Sunday school superintendent and teacher, a member of the trustee and finance committees, and one of many faithful servants praising God in the church choir.
Dan is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Daniel W. and Debra L. Rarig and Ronald E. Rarig all of Montandon; one brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Dix and Pauline Reitz of Montandon; one grandson, Brandon Rarig and his wife Rachel of Nashville, TN; 16 nieces and nephews and a special friend during the last 10 years, Alice Snyder of Montandon.
A celebration of Dan’s life will be held Saturday, October 22, at the Montandon United Methodist Church, Route 45, Montandon.
Friends may gather to remember Dan from 1 to 3 p.m. and a memorial service will follow at 3 p.m. conducted by his minister, Pastor Jim Lewis. A private burial will be in the Montandon Cemetery.
The family welcomes flowers, however, if desired, memorial contributions may be made to the Montandon United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 86, Montandon, PA 17850.
The family is being assisted by Cronrath-Grenoble Funeral Home, South Second and St. Louis Streets, Lewisburg.
