Gregory T. Staley, 56, a resident of Milton the past nine years, passed on to his eternal home on Friday, March 23, 2012 at Evangelical Community Hospital, Lewisburg.
Born Jan. 7, 1956 in Sunbury, he was the son of Dorothy Irene (Kratzer) Staley, who survives, and the late Thomas Elwood Staley.
A 1973 graduate of Mifflinburg High School, Greg served in the U. S. Air Force from 1974 to 1978 as a security specialist. Following his discharge, he worked in security at the former Rea & Derrick warehouse until 1991, and in 1992 he went to work for Burns Security, now Securist, until retiring in 2010 due to ill health.
In his spare time Greg enjoyed fishing and hunting, and was also a history enthusiast. He was a football fan, especially the 49ers, and loved spending time with his family.
Greg was a member of Zion’s Church of Kratzerville.
Surviving in addition to his mother of Milton are his loving sister, Lori Staley of Danville; one nephew, Christopher Aikey and wife, Melody, of Selinsgrove; one niece, Amber Aikey of Middleburg; one great-nephew, Isaiah Aikey; and two great-nieces, Isabella Aikey and Emily Aikey.
In addition to his father he was predeceased by his maternal grandparents, Artie and Carrie Kratzer and his paternal grandparents, Susie and Maurice Staley.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, March 28, at Zion’s Church of Kratzerville. Officiating will be his pastor, the Rev. Dr. John W. Radke. Interment will follow in Evangelical Reformed Cemetery, Kratzerville.
The family will provide the flowers and suggests memorial contributions be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, 2080 Linglestown Road # 104, Harrisburg, PA 17110.
The family is being assisted by Cronrath-Grenoble Funeral Home, Lewisburg.
Ronald L. Bennett
Ronald L. “Ron” Bennett, 67, of 2545 Turbot Ave., Dewart, passed away Thursday, March 15, 2012 at his home.
He was born May 29, 1944 in Williamsport, a son of the late Vernon W. and Mildred I. (Strassner) Bennett. He and his wife, the former Sharon K. Young, were marriage May 28, 1983. Together they celebrated 28 years of marriage.
Ron was a 1962 graduate of Warrior Run High School. He had worked for the Turbotville Block Company in Turbotville, Habig Veneer, J C Decker and Decker Chase all in Montgomery, and was currently employed by Paris Linen, Lewisburg, where he worked in environmental services.
Ron loved flowers, gardening and watching birds, especially blue birds. He also enjoyed making canvas crafts which he entered in the Bloomsburg Fair winning First and Second places.
Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons and daughters-in-law, Brian and Julie Bennett, of Dallas and Brad and Stephanie Bennett, of Waverly, NY; one daughter, Brenda Knopp, of Muncy; three stepsons and two stepdaughters-in-law, Earl and Pam Walburn, of Watsontown, Doug and Kim Walburn, of Turbotville and Greg Walburn, of Sunbury; two stepdaughters and stepsons-in-law, Julie Battdorf and John Derr, of Watsontown and Darlene Walburn and Jeff Hagenbach, of Sunbury; two sisters, Doris Badger, of Lewisburg and Phyllis Sherman, of Watsontown; one brother-in-law, Bright Badger, of Bloomsburg; two sisters-in-law, Faye Bennett, of Gainesville, FL and Gail Bennett, of Watsontown; 23 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by three brothers, Harold, Donald and Gerald Bennett; two sisters, Lois Durlin and Janis Balliet; two brothers-in-law, Arthur Sherman and Robert Durlin; one sister-in-law, Charlotte Bennett; one stepson, Dale Walburn and one son-in-law, Craig Knopp.
Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, March 18, at Cronrath-Grenoble Funeral Home, 308 Main St. Watsontown, where the funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Monday. Officiating will be Rev. Daniel May, Pastor at Holy Spirit Lutheran Church, Watsontown. Burial will follow in the Watsontown Cemetery.
Stanley Franklin Benscoter, Jr.
Stanley Franklin Benscoter Jr. passed away Sunday April 15, 2012 at the age of 89. He was born in Delaware Twp, Northumberland County, PA August 22, 1922, son of Laura Mae Ravert and Stanley (AKA Luther) Benscoter. He is the widower of Marie Luella Barto of Penn Twp. Lycoming County, PA.
Stanley graduated from Watsontown High School in 1940. He worked with his father from his early teens in the construction of many buildings in Watsontown prior to his father's death in 1941. One of the buildings was part of the Watsontown Cabinet Factory which later became Philco. During WWII he enlisted in the Army Air Corps, attended Niagara University for OCS, became a pilot and flew B24s.
Stanley and Marie built their home at the corner of Freeman Road and John Streets in 1948 and lived there until 2005 when they moved to be with their son Roger, where Stanley remained until his passing.
Prior to and after WWII he built Cedar Chests at the West Branch Novelty Company in Milton until they closed in 1950. Stanley then worked at the Jasper Wood Products Company and then returned to house building with Lester Ulrich. He attended Williamsport Technical Institute and completed courses in blueprint reading and wood patternmaking. With this new knowledge, Stanley went to work for Philco. As a model maker he received blue prints from the engineers and built prototype models that were sent to management for approval before a production run. One of his special assignments was a futuristic entertainment model that appeared at the 1964 World Fair in NY in the Ford pavilion (Philco section). Philco was sold to Zenith. After Zenith closed in 1982 he contracted his model making skills to other companies, most notably Pennsylvania House.
Throughout his life he enjoyed playing music; be it banjo, guitar, violin or steel guitar. He was a member of the United Church of Christ of Watsontown and Watsontown American Legion.
He left 3 surviving children, Glenn Benscoter, husband of Carolyn Stewart with son Erik living in Windsor, MA; Janet Solomon living in Virginia Beach, VA. with 4 adult children, sons Brandon and Ryan, and daughters Kristen Carl with 2 children and Abbey Turnau with 1 child; Roger Benscoter, husband of Debra Cochran living in Cranberry Twp., Butler County, PA with 4 adult daughters Crystal Bartlett with 2 sons, Melissa Stevenson, Amber Clifford, and Heather Magill.
He survived four sisters; Hilda Donnelly, Marietta Phillips, Martha Stahl and Harriet Benscoter.
Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Cronrath-Grenoble Funeral Home, 308 Main St., Watsontown, where the funeral will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Thursday with Rev. Douglas J. Seagle of St. John’s United Church of Christ, New Columbia, officiating.
Burial with full military honors will follow in Twin Hills Memorial Park, Muncy.
The family welcomes flowers; however, if desired, memorial contributions may be made to the Trinity United Church of Christ, 602 Main Street, Watsontown, PA 17777.
Patricia Ann "Patty" Gates
Patricia Ann “Patty” Gates, 60, of 558 Satellite Drive, Milton, died Tuesday, April 3, 2012 at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.
She was born April 15, 1951 in Lewisburg, a daughter of Madeline (Turner) Gates of Milton and the late Lloyd E. Gates, Sr.
A 1969 graduate of Lewisburg High School, Patty worked as an assistant manager for almost 20 years at the Lewisburg Hotel, where she befriended many of the people that came in. Most recently she worked as a regional supervisor for 25 years at the former Keystone Residence, Sunbury, where she enjoyed taking care of people.
An outgoing person, Patty loved spending time with her family at gatherings and playing with her nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. She also enjoyed cooking for others.
Surviving in addition to her mother are one brother and sister-in-law, Michael and Cindy Gates, of New Columbia; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Jacqueline and Charles Stach, of White Deer and Annalisa Foulds and her companion, Norman Fogelman III, of Milton; 12 nieces and nephews, Laura Gates, Heather Foulds-Coppola, Henry Timothy Foulds II, Heidi Foulds, Sara Fogelman, Misty Loss, Aylissa Aikey, Tessy Aikey, Rachael Gates, Corinda Gonzales, Melanie Banks, and Melissa Mitch; and 15 great nieces and great nephews, Ethan, Liam, Zane, Quentin, Isabelle, Kayden, Kieralynne, Brady, KateLynn, Tiffany, Justice, Cheyenne, Jade, Jordan and Jalissa.
In addition to her father, she was predeceased by two brothers, William Brady Gates and Lloyd Edward Gates, Jr. and one sister, Mary Dauberman.
Friends will be received from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, April 6, at Cronrath-Grenoble Funeral Home, S. Second and St. Louis streets, Lewisburg, where the funeral will be held at 7 p.m. Officiating will be Rev. Douglas M. Eberly, pastor of Watsontown United Methodist Church.
