Harold Manning

Harold Ray Manning, 74, of 22 Manning Road, Tunkhannock, PA, passed away on Thursday morning, Jan. 2, 2003 at the Tyler Memorial Hospital in Tunkhannock.
Born in Mehoopany on July 25, 1928, he was the son of the late Edson and Matilda Engelman Manning.
He was married to the former Marian Page and they celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary on Nov. 10, 2002.
Harold was a graduate of Mehoopany High School and was a dairy farmer. A member of the National Rifle Association, he loved to spend time on his farm and enjoyed hunting.
He belonged to the Biblical Baptist Church in Meshoppen.
Survivors include his wife, Marian; two sons, Kevin of Tunkhannock and Roger of Suffolk, VA; one daughter, Donna Archer of Factoryville; three brothers, Stewart of Meshoppen, Robert, Arizona and Edward, Tunkhannock; one sister, Dorothy Rogers, Nicholson, four grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Byron.
Funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family at the Biblical Baptist Church, Briar Ridge Road, Meshoppen, with Rev. Gary Myers, pastor officiating. Interment will be in Vaughan Cemetery, Mehoopany. There were no calling hours.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Biblical Baptist Church, Briar Ridge Road, Meshoppen, PA 18630.

Louise LaFrance
Dec. 23, 2002
Mrs. Louise B. LaFrance, age 75, of RR4, Box 4050, Allen St., Meshoppen, PA, passed away at the V.N.A. Hospice of Lackawanna County in the Community Medical Center, Scranton, on Monday evening, Dec. 23, 2002.
Born in Meshoppen on Oct. 18, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Clarence and Jennie Phillips Bunnell. Mrs. LaFrance was the wife of the late Boyd C. LaFrance, who passed away on June 25, 1987.
Louise was a graduate of the Meshoppen High School, Class of 1945 and also a graduate of Robert Packer Hospital School of Nursing, Class of 1948. In her younger years, she was a registered nurse at Tyler Memorial Hospital in Meshoppen.
She was a member of the Meshoppen United Methodist Church and was also a member of the Eastern Star, Meshoppen Chapter #70. For many years, Louise was Meshoppen Borough tax collector, retiring in 2000.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Tim (Tracie) McGavin of Meshoppen; a brother, Max E. Bunnell, Meshoppen; two grandchildren, Timothy and Kayla McGavin, both of Meshoppen; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Gerald and Dorothy LaFrance, Wyalusing and Ronald and Ruth LaFrance, Owego, NY; several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Wendy Lee LaFrance, who passed away on April 28, 1990.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, Dec. 28 at 11 a.m. from the Sheldon Funeral Home, Main St., Meshoppen, with Rev. Dan Herron of the Meshoppen United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment was in the Overfield Cemetery in Meshoppen.
Friends and family called at the funeral home on Friday evening from 6 to 9 p.m. Eastern Star services were held on Friday evening at the funeral home at 8:30 p.m., conducted by the members of the Eastern Star, Meshoppen Chapter #70.

Marjorie Hinds
Dec. 31, 2002
Mrs. Marjorie M. Hinds, age 95, formerly of 10 Maple St., Laceyville, PA, passed away at the Carpenter Care Center in Tunkhannock on Tuesday afternoon, Dec. 31, 2002. She had been a resident of Carpenter Care Center for the past three years.
Born in Laceyville on Sept. 30, 1907, she was the daughter of the late Benjamin and Luvia Carter Michael. Mrs. Hinds was the wife of the late Donald L. (Len) Hinds, who passed away on Jan. 9, 1991.
Mrs. Hinds was a graduate of Laceyville High School and also a graduate of Susquehanna University. She taught in the English department at Montrose Area High School for 36 years. Her graduate work was done at the University of New Hampshire.
Always a lover and collector of books, she also enjoyed good music and art. She was the author of five published books and several gospel hymns.
Mrs. Hinds was a past member of the Braintrim Baptist Church in Laceyville, where she taught an adult Sunday School class for some time. For the past several years, when she was able, she attended the Independent Baptist Church in Towanda. She was also a member of the Montrose Teachers Association and PSEA.
Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Harry Michael and two sisters, Marion Jayne and Dorothy Michael.
Funeral services were held on Friday, Jan. 3, 2003 at 11 a.m. from the Sheldon Funeral Home, Main St., Laceyville, with Rev. Darris Hauser, retired minister of the Independent Baptist Church in Towanda, officiating. Interment was in the Lacey St. Cemetery, Laceyville. Calling hours were held on Friday, one hour prior to the service.

Willard Gary

Willard M. Gary, age 82, of Rush Twp., PA, died on Monday, Dec. 23, 2002 at Tyler Memorial Hospital in Tunkhannock. He was born March 23, 1920 in Rush Twp., Susquehanna County, PA and was the son of the late Byron G. and Helen (James) Gary. On Oct. 17, 1959, he was married to Leoma Cook, who survives him.
He graduated from the Rush High School, Class of 1938.
Willard was a self-employed dairy farmer and enjoyed singing and sung with the Harmony Men. He was very active with his church and a long-time deacon, former Sunday School Superintendent and was very devoted to his family.
In addition to his wife, survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Elizabeth G. and James P. Gundlach, Energy, IL, Ruth E. and Mark Gillette, Burlington, NC, Nannette D. and Darren Pettyjohn, Montrose; 12 grandchildren, Sarah, Emily, Heather, Mary Beth, Daniel, Stephen, Rachel, Susanna, Andrew, Benjamin, Nathaneal, Abigail; brothers and sisters-in-law, J. Arthur and Hazel Gary, Rush, Harold G. and Sara Gary, Tiffany Corners; sisters and brother-in-law, Ruth G. Snyder, Montrose, Janet M. and Robert Fuller, Berkshire, NY; a sister-in-law, Connie (Holmes) Gary; nieces, nephews and cousins.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers, Richard T. Gary and Dana E. Gary and his first wife, Sally L. (Holmes) Gary.
Services were held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 27 at the Birchardville Baptist Church. The family received friends from 1 p.m. until the time of the service at the church.

Rita Barrett

Rita L. Barrett, 72, of Deposit, NY, died unexpectedly Saturday, Jan. 4, 2003 at her home.
She was predeceased by her husband, Charles R. Barrett, on May 23, 2002.
She is survived by a daughter, Zandra Barrett, Deposit; two grandchildren, Sarah Salsman and Kevin Kingsbury; three great-grandchildren, Alex, Ebin and Christian; three sisters, Lee Ann Cohen, Ellenville, NY, Erie Amidon, Syracuse, NY and Landra Perry, Bath, NY; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She had worked for many years for Valley Offset Printing in Deposit. She was a member and director of the Deposit Community Historical Society and member of Delaware Chapter #244 O.E.S.
Funeral and committal services were held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2003, at the Zacharias Funeral Home in Deposit with Rev. Joseph Axtell, Pastor of the Sherman Bible Chapel of Sherman, Pa., officiating. Burial will be in the Pine Grove Cemetery, Deposit, in the spring. Friends called at the funeral home on Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Wednesday from 1 p.m. until the time of service. An Eastern Star Ritualistic Service was held at 8 p.m. Tuesday evening.

Albert Lamb

Albert C. (Skeet) Lamb, age 74, of Wyalusing, PA, passed away on Sunday, April 13, 2003, surrounded by his loving and devoted family at the Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre.
He was born on July 11, 1928 in Troy Township, a son of the late Albert Winfield and Adis Lattimer Lamb.
On Feb. 19, 1950, Albert married the former Ruth Glosenger in Sayre. It was a loving and devoted marriage that lasted 46 years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth on Dec. 10, 1996.
Skeet and Ruth moved from Sayre to Wyalusing in 1956.
He owned and operated a service station in Wyalusing for many years. He offered O.J.T. (on-the-job training) for local youth at his station.
Mr. Lamb was a member of the Wyalusing United Methodist Church. His other memberships included: Wyalusing Masonic Lodge No. 618 F&AM, where he served as a past master and lodge treasurer; the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite Valley of Williamsport, the Wyalusing Lions Club and was president and director and recipient of the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award. He was also an active member of the Wyalusing Fire and Ambulance Associations for many years.
His hobbies included softball, bowling, trout fishing and hunting.
He especially enjoyed time spent in Penn Yan, NY at the lake with his family and many friends.
Surviving are his children and their spouses, Pamela S. Lamb of Lairdsville, Andrea J. and Emery Thorn, Sr. of Laceyville, Vickie A. and Raymond Morris of Quicks Bend, Diana J. Lamb of Wyalusing, Jeffrey A. and Dawn Lamb of Stevensville, Allyson K. and Kenneth Brooks of Stevensville, Gregory C. and Jeanne Lamb of Bakersfield, CA; 12 grandchildren: Emery Thorn, Jr., Anthony K. Lamb, Darcie L. Welsted, Dakotah L. Brown, Lindsay L. Brown, J. Andrew Lamb, Rachell T. Lamb, Jonathan M. Lamb, Casey L. Ott, Bobbi Jo Ott, Kayla L. Burnight and Timothy J. Burnight; two great-granddaughters, Olivia Ruth Lamb and Madison Alexis Welsted; a sister, Doris Craig; a brother, Roger Lamb; several sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a brother, Samuel Lamb and a sister, Harriet Fay.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, April 16 at 2 p.m. at the Wyalusing United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Russell C. Pierce, his pastor, officiating.
Interment followed in the Bradford County Memorial Park, Luthers Mills.
Friends and family called on Tuesday, April 15 at the McHenry Funeral Home, 106 Church St., Wyalusing, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Masonic funeral service was held on Tuesday evening by members of the Wyalusing Lodge #618 F&AM at 8 p.m.

Peter Layman

Peter Williams Layman, age 98, of Streetsboro, OH, formerly of Hollenback, PA, passed away on Monday, April 7, 2003 at the Anna Maria of Aurora Nursing Home in Aurora, OH where he had resided since January 2001.
Born Sept. 22, 1904 in Terry Township, Bradford County, PA, Peter was the third child of Frederick and Eva Williams Layman. After several years of childhood illnesses, he completed eighth grade at the one-room Vial Hill School in 1920. He drove a Model-T Ford truck, hauling the family dairy’s milk to the Wyalusing Creamery on his way to Wyalusing High School from which he graduated in the 17-member class of 1924.
The following school year, he returned to the Vial Hill School and taught all eight grades. In the fall of 1925, he took additional math courses at Towanda High School to meet entrance requirements for the architecture program in Penn State’s College of Engineering. Prior to starting his freshman year, he worked as a clerk and helper at the Wyalusing Hotel during the winter and summer of 1926. He described it as a "busy time" during which the sections of U.S. Route 6 from Wysox to Wyalusing, and on to Laceyville were first paved with concrete.
While at Penn State, Peter earned his room and board by working in fraternity dining halls. He was on the art staff of the La Vie yearbook, and was elected to Scarab, a national architecture honorary society and Pi Gamma Alpha, a fine arts honorary society. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Architectural Design in 1930 in the midst of the Great Depression.
With virtually no employment available in the field of architecture, he worked as a draftsman for Whipple Brothers of Laceyville in the summer of 1930, prior to taking a teaching position with the private Lutheran Tressler Orphan’s School in Loysville, PA, where he continued for five years.
Peter met Kathryn Gamble at her sister, Ethlyn’s wedding in 1926, and they were married five years to the day on June 25, 1931. Both Peter and Kathryn taught at the Perry County School until moving to Boston, MA in 1935, where Peter studied and taught in the Department of Fine Arts at Harvard University. He was awarded the Edward R. Bacon Fellowship for two years of independent travel and study of art in Europe.
He sailed to Cherbourg, France on the H.M.S. Queen Mary in August of 1939. As he arrived in Paris, Hitler invaded Poland and World War II began. His planned travel to Istanbul, Turkey, to assist another Harvard Bacon Fellow with obtaining plaster copies of mosaics from Aya Sophia, ended abruptly when all passengers were ordered off the train in Lyon, France. Due to the political uncertainties and imminent danger, he had to return to the United States. After enduring five weeks of severe communication problems and restrictive travel conditions, he was approved for return passage on "cot #7" in the Playroom of the S.S. Manhattan.
Upon his arrival in New York City on October 8, 1939, he learned all his letters to Kathryn had arrived only a day earlier; they had been delayed for censoring by the French government. He continued studying at Harvard and was offered a teaching position for the summer of 1941, only to have it cancelled when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor.
Early in 1942, Peter and Kathryn returned to the Wyalusing area, bought a farm in Hollenback, where their son, Scott was born. While working available hourly jobs (his summer haying job paid a total of $22) he also raised chickens, pigs and calves while developing a small dairy herd. By 1948, realizing the farm was not large enough scale to continue, he sold the dairy herd and returned to Harvard where he completed his Master’s Degree in 1949.
Peter was next employed as an instructor with the Bradford County teachers of the G.I. "On-Farm" program which assisted veterans in becoming self-sufficient farmers. In 1950, he became Head Instructor with full responsibility for the program for Bradford and Sullivan Counties. In 1953, he was offered a position teaching art in the Sayre Area Schools.
To achieve public school teaching certification, he attended three summer school sessions at Penn State and took additional short-courses. In 1958, he took a similar position with the Montrose School System and continued there until his retirement in 1967. In both Sayre and Montrose, his responsibilities included work with school yearbook staffs, poster contests, preparation of stage scenery, etc. His greatest satisfactions came from the development of his "elective art" students, some of whom continued their study toward careers in art.
He was a member of local, state and national professional educational and art associations, and continually enriched his interests and skills in art media through workshops, short courses and private study. Stone and wood sculpture and ceramics were studied during his early years of retirement.
During the late 1940’s and into the 1950’s, Peter served 11 years on the Wilmot Township School Board, serving as secretary for the last eight years. He was especially proud of being instrumental in the initial merging of the Wyalusing, New Albany and Laceyville Schools into the Wyalusing Valley School System. They were interesting times, as all of the rural one-room schools were closed within a few years…a very unpopular move in some communities. His strong and abiding interest in the system and its students continued throughout his life.
He was a charter member of the Great Books Discussion group that met monthly in Towanda for several years in the 1950s, and was a regular attendee of the Community Concert Series that brought professional musicians to Towanda. Walks in the woods were always a favorite part of Peter and Kathryn’s life; his ten-day Appalachian Trail hike from the Delaware Water Gap to the Susquehanna River at Duncannon with Scott in 1956 intensified his interest in hiking. The trail shelters so impressed him, that he and Scott built a similar stone structure on their farm. It became a source of great enjoyment and many memorable overnights for friends and family alike.
In retirement, Peter and Kathryn enjoyed hiking in the Endless Mountains, as well as longer hikes on the Appalachian Trail in Maine, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Virginia. During the seventies, they enjoyed having one or more of their three young grandchildren stay with them at the farm…the times were always filled with new and unique adventures which enriched the lives of both generations. No travels were more prized than their many journeys to Ohio for birthdays, concerts, church musical programs, scout award ceremonies, marching band competitions, high school and college graduations and marriages of their three grandchildren.
Together, they witnessed their family’s growth, marriages and evolving careers with pride and great satisfaction. Their words of encouragement and enthusiastic interest in family member’s accomplishments are an enduring inspiration.
During Peter’s recent two years as a resident in Ohio, he has been able to know and interact with his five great-grandchildren…a rare privilege and rich heritage for both Peter and his family.
Throughout more than thirty years of retirement, Peter and Kathryn attended hundreds of school events, often traveling to away contests or community events involving local youth. Special recognition of their dedicated support was given in 1994 at the Wyalusing High School Sports Banquet when the announcement was made "In honor of their countless hours of unselfish dedication to the young men and women of our community, tonight we dedicate this gymnasium in their honor as the Layman Gymnasium." The honor was deeply appreciated and a source of much personal satisfaction. Mention of the school’s successes and student achievements always brightened his day.
Significant recent celebrations have included Kathryn’s 100th birthday on January 7, 2000, Peter and Kathryn’s 69th wedding anniversary on June 25, 2000 and Peter’s 98th birthday, with all family members attending on September 22, 2002.
Surviving are: their son, Scott of Kent, OH; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren: Dr. Martin W. Layman, his wife Margery and daughters, Amanda and Samantha of Chagrin Falls, OH, Eric B. Layman, his wife, Deborah and daughter, Hannah of South Euclid, OH and Karin L. Conroy, husband, Edward, sons, Nathan and Ryan of Uniontown, OH. Nieces and nephews include Nancy G. W. Baker, Dr. Joseph Kast, Frederick Butts and Frederick Landon. Peter was predeceased by his wife, Kathryn, his parents, Frederick C. and Eva Williams Layman; sisters and their husbands, Ethel and Martin Butts and Grace and George Landon; nieces, Barbara Kast, Eva Griffith and Charlotte Urso, and nephews, Eugene Landon and Robert Butts.
The family requests that memorial donations be made in Peter’s name to the "Kathryn and Peter Layman Scholarship Fund" care of The Peoples State Bank, PO Box 217, Wyalusing, PA 18853.
A memorial service will be held at the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home in Wyalusing at a date to be announced.
Chuck Love
April 15, 2003
Mr. L. Chuck Love, age 42, of RR2, Box 317, Meshoppen, PA (South Auburn) passed away on Tuesday morning, April 15, 2003 at the Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, after an illness.
Born in Montrose on April 29, 1960, he was the son of Charles M., Jr. and Vera M. Norton Love of South Auburn.
Chuck was a graduate of the Elk Lake High School, Class of 1978. While at Elk Lake, he was a member of their baseball team and participated in the school plays, was a member of the school band and chorus and was his class valedictorian. He was a graduate of Penn State University, Class of 1982 and while at Penn State, was a member of the Penn State Glee Club. He was also an avid Penn State football fan.
He was employed for many years for Shamrock Auctions in Meshoppen, working at their auctions and with their computer systems.
He was a member of the South Auburn United Methodist Church, serving as their pianist for over 30 years. He was also their youth group leader and church treasurer. Chuck was a charter member of the Endless Mountains Chorus and a member of the Montrose Harmony Men. He was a past member of the Bonavita Construction and Maplewood Lanes softball teams, playing in the South Montrose Softball League. He was a past member of the Wyalusing American Legion baseball team, and most recently, was a member of the South Auburn Community Relay for Life Team.
Besides his parents, he is survived by his wife of 13 years, the former Tammy A. Lott, of South Auburn; a brother, Steve J. Love, South Auburn; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, J. Rexford, Jr. and Martha Lott of Auburn Center; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Joseph R., III and Amy Lott and Karen and Grant Adams, all of Auburn Center; also a niece and three nephews; many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 19 at 11 a.m. from the South Auburn United Methodist Church, with Rev. Beverly Murphy of the church, officiating. Interment will be in the Jersey Hill Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to call at the Sheldon Funeral Home, Main St., Meshoppen, on Friday, April 18 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. The Endless Mountains Chorus will pass in review at the funeral home on Friday evening at 8 p.m.

John Lyman
April 10, 2003
John Marcy Lyman, age 83, of RR1, Box 252, Springville, PA, passed away Thursday morning, April 10, 2003 at his home on Lymanstead Farm. His family has lived on this homestead for 200 years.
Born in Lymanville on Aug. 23, 1919, he was the son of the late Albert Root and Nellie Marcy Lyman.
He married the former Clara Beeney on Oct. 3, 1945.
He was the owner of Lymanstead Farm and was a lifetime member of the Lymanville United Methodist Church and a member of the Lemon United Methodist Church.
A graduate of Springville High School, Class of 1937, he also attended Delhi State College of Agriculture. An Army Air Corps veteran of WWII, he served as Tech. Sgt. in the European Theatre with the 68th Bombardment Squadron. His plane was shot down over France and he was a POW for over a year and was awarded a Purple Heart.
Mr. Lyman was a life member of the VFW Post #383, Elk Lake and American Legion Post 154, Montrose. He was also a member of the Tunkhannock Moose Lodge #1296, the Susquehanna County Beekeeper’s Association and a life member of National Holstein Association. He developed one of the first registered Holstein herds in the area.
He was a member of the Lynn Cemetery Association, life member of the NRA, member of PA Trappers’ Association and a former member of Elk Lake School Board of Directors.
Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Linda Litwin, Factoryville, Carol Lyman, Springville, Esther Clarke, Meshoppen; seven grandchildren; one great-grandson and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Helen Palmer, Ruth Cook and Esther Stevens.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, April 13 at 2 p.m. at the Harding-Litwin Funeral Home, 123 W. Tioga St., Tunkhannock, with the Rev. Edwin A. Simmons of the Lemon United Methodist Church and the Rev. J. Daniel Herron of the Meshoppen United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment was in the Lynn Cemetery, Springville Township, with military services conducted by members of the VFW and American Legion.
Friends and family called at the funeral home on Saturday, April 12 from 5 to 8 p.m.

John P. McCormack

John P. McCormack, 89, of Forest Lake, PA, died Sunday, April 13, 2003 at Wilson Memorial Hospital, Johnson City, NY.
Born June 28, 1913 in Shamokin, he was the son of the late Peter and Katherine Lynch McCormack. He was married to Doris E. Burr McCormack, who survives.
He was a retired electrician from NYSEG.
In addition to his wife, survivors include daughters and son-in-law, Lynne McCormack, Bellefonte, Faith McCormack and Gerry Twombly, Lakeland, TN; granddaughters, Faith Drewry, Portland, OR, Maci Twombly, Lakeland, TN; sisters and brothers-in-law, Ruth and Chuck Spaulding, Ormond Beach, FL, Peggy and Art Murphy, Sacramento, CA; a brother, Dick McCormack, Richmond, VA; nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Helen Shilkoskie Richlin, age 93, of Forks Township, Sullivan County, PA passed away on Monday, April 14, 2003 at the Highlands in Laporte.
Helen was born Jan. 28, 1910 in West Wyoming, daughter of the late Francis and Nellie Ostrosky Shilkoskie.
Helen worked for the former Weldon Manufacturing Company in Lopez, and later the Towanda Silk Mill and Dushore Lingerie in Dushore. She retired from the Endicott Johnson Mfg. Co. of Mildred in 1971. She was married to Martin J. Richlin of Forks Township, who predeceased her in 1983.
Helen lived in Forks Township most of her life and was an accomplished gardener and an expert in crocheting.
Helen was a member of St. Basil’s Church, Dushore and a member of the former Altar & Rosary Society.
Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law; John M. and Elaine Richlin, Dushore; daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara and Alfred Place, Meshoppen, Betty Miller, Elmira, NY, Margaret and Bernard Fedroff, Montoursville, Maxine Weaver, Dushore, Sylvia Richlin, Roseville, CA; a sister, Leona Richlin, Dushore; 15 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two sons-in-law: Ellery Weaver, Jr. of Dushore, and David Miller of Elmira, NY; three sisters, Stella Pinkowski of Nanticoke, Sister Honoria Paluskie (Franciscan Sister), Marian Shilkoskie of Nanticoke and a brother, John Shilkoskie of Dushore.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Wednesday, April 16, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Basil’s Church, Dushore, with the Rev. Gerard L. Hawley, her grandson, pastor of St. John Neumann Catholic Church, Hawley, presiding. Interment was in St. Basil’s Cemetery.
There was no visitation and the family provided their own flowers, Memorials are directed to the St. Basil’s Restoration Fund, PO Box 307, Dushore, PA 18614.

Earl Tinna

Mr. Earl A. (Smokey) Tinna, age 77, of RR2, Box 2301, Laceyville, PA, formerly of Camptown, passed away on Tuesday morning, April 15, 2003 at the Tyler Memorial Hospital in Tunkhannock.
Born in Sayre on Aug. 3, 1925, he was the son of the late James and Florence Brown Tinna. Mr. Tinna was the husband of the late Ina Berkley Tinna, who passed away in 1982.
Smokey was employed as a truck driver for many years, driving for Dutch Repsher Trucking of Laceyville, and he was also employed by Frank Newhart Quarries, until his retirement in 1986.
In his spare time, he enjoyed helping his family and his many neighbors and friends. He also loved and enjoyed being surrounded by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is survived by his daughters and their husbands, Linda and Carl Barnes of Laceyville, Dena and Avery Colegrove of Laceyville and Cindy Tinna and her special friend, Paul Walters of Laceyville; a son and his wife, Ellis and Susan Berkley of Spring Hill; a brother, Gerald (Tim) Tinna of Mehoopany and six sisters, Jean Setser and Lola Remington, both of Tunkhannock, Helen Wells and Margaret Carney, both of Meshoppen, Ruth cook of Tunkhannock and Frances Mallery of Florida; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews and special friends, Ruby and John Boyanowski of Camptown. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by twin daughters, Lisa and Laura Tinna in 1964; a granddaughter, Krissy Barnes in 2002 and brothers, Kenneth Tinna and Harold (Bim) Tinna, Sr. in 1996.
At Mr. Tinna’s request, there will be no funeral services. Calling hours will be held at the Sheldon Funeral Home, Main St., Laceyville, on Thursday evening, April 17 from 6 until 9 p.m. Private graveside services will be in the Lacey St. Cemetery in Laceyville at the convenience of the family, with the Rev. Beverly Murphy of the South Auburn United Methodist Church, officiating.

Dolores Whipple

Dolores R. Whipple, age 76, of Hughesville, PA (formerly of Dushore), passed away on Thursday, April 3, 2003 at the Highlands Nursing Home in Laporte.
She was born on May 3, 1926 in Dushore, a daughter of the late Sherman Z. and Carrie Krause Bahr.
Dolores had been a lifetime resident of the Dushore area and had resided in Hughesville for five years.
In August of 1986, she was preceded in death by her husband, the late Walter Whipple.
Mrs. Whipple was a former member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church of Dushore and was a member of its Ladies Aide. She was also a member of the Republican Women for many years.
She was an excellent seamstress and a great artist.
Surviving are her children and their spouses, Julia A. and Robert Stroble of Laporte, Thomas S. Whipple of Hughesville, Timothy C. Whipple of Hughesville; stepchildren, Gary Whipple of Allentown, Faye Hendricks of Hop Bottom; brothers and sisters, Samuel Bahr of Towanda, Etta and Dolly Farris of Endicott, Regina Kelly of Mildred, Sarah Bensorosky of Dushore, Robert Bahr of Monroeton; six grandchildren, Benjamin C. and Alexis Stroble of Richmond, VA, Kristen L. Stroble, Pittsburgh, Susan L. Stroble, Laporte, Brenda Whipple, Jersey Shore, Matthew Whipple of LA, Erin Whipple of LA; three great-grandchildren, Eric and Julian Whipple and Isabella Julianna Stroble and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Eve Dunn and a brother, Jerry Bahr.
A private funeral service was held on Monday, April 7 at 2 p.m. in the Hollenback United Methodist Church, with Scot Magann, pastor, officiating.
Interment followed in the Wyalusing Cemetery.

Patricia Stephenson

Patricia Neiley Stephenson, 69, widow of Kenneth D. "Denny" Stephenson and well-known Towanda resident of 7 Mix Ave., died early Wednesday morning, April 2, 2003.
Patricia was visiting the home of her sister and brother-in-law, Marjorie and John Hulslander in West Burlington when a fire consumed the residents, claiming the lives of Patricia, Marjorie and John.
Born April 13, 1933 in Sayre, she was a daughter of the late R. Alfred Neiley and Catherine Brennan Neiley. Patricia was a graduate of Towanda High School, Class of 1951 and was a former Pennsylvania State Laurel Queen candidate, representing Towanda.
On June 21, 1952, Patricia married Kenneth D. Stephenson at Christ Episcopal Church in Towanda.
She was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 50 years on March 16, 2002.
In early years, Patricia was employed by the A&P Market in Towanda. She was later employed by the District Magistrate’s office in Towanda by Magistrates James Cox and James Powell for many years until her retirement. Patricia was a member of the Towanda Area Senior Citizens and enjoyed volunteer work for the Towanda Elks Lodge. She loved to care for her home and family, cooking, antiques and walking.
Surviving are two sons, Joseph K. and Candy Stephenson of Towanda and Jack W. Stephenson and Deanna Bogaczyk of Towanda; brothers and sisters-in-law, James and Lois Neiley of Bangor and Robert and Mary Neiley of Standing Stone; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Gordon and Sandra Stephenson of Towanda; two sisters-in-law, Evelyn Stephenson of Towanda and Kay Stephenson of Rome; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family received friends on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Maryott-Bowen Funeral Home, 217 York Ave., Towanda.
The funeral was held on Saturday, April 5 at 10 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church, Main St., Towanda, with the Rev. Allen Hulslander, pastor, officiating.
Interment followed in the Bradford County Memorial Park, Luthers Mills.
Fawn McCarty

Miss Fawn Amber McCarty, age 17, of Dushore, PA passed away on Tuesday, April 8, 2003 at the Robert Packer Hospital following an automobile accident.
Fawn was born in Towanda, on March 25, 1986. She was a very active member of the Junior Class at the Sullivan County High School. She was the boys’ soccer manager and a cheerleader for the boys’ basketball team. She was also a member of the prom committee.
Surviving are her parents, Vikki Bodnar of Dushore and Michael Bodnar of Wyalusing; her sister, Fallon M. Bodnar, at home; maternal grandparents, Roger and Carol Samuels, Forksville, and Roger Gurka of Croton-on-Hudson, NY; paternal grandmother, Betty Bodnar, Wyalusing; great-grandmothers, Elizabeth Gurka, Hastings-on-Hudson, NY and LaRue Samuels, of Breinigsville; an aunt, Melissa Gurka of Berrien Springs, MI and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 11 at St. Basil’s Church, Dushore, at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Michael B. Harris, pastor, presiding.
Friends may call at the church from 2 p.m. until the time of the service.

Marjorie Neiley Hulslander, 65, and John Edgar Hulslander, 69, well-known residents of West Burlington, Troy RR3, died early Wednesday morning, April 2, 2003 when a fire consumed their home.
Marjorie and John are survived by their children, Thomas Hulslander and his wife, Linda Hulslander of Tunkhannock, Cindy Hulslander Loss and her husband, Steve Loss of Nicholson RR2 and Timothy Hulslander of Towanda RR3; their grandchildren, Kevin, John Thomas, Shane, Ashley, Erin, Mike and Conner.
Marjorie was born March 8, 1938 in Sayre, a daughter of the late R. Alfred Neiley and Catherine Brennan Neiley. She was a graduate of the Towanda High School, class of 1956 and was a former Pennsylvania State Laurel Queen candidate, representing Towanda.
On June 14, 1957, she married John Edgar Hulslander at Christ Episcopal Church in Towanda.
In early years, Marjorie was employed as a secretary for the GLF in Towanda. She later was employed by the Valley Stock Yards in Athens and served as tax collector for West Burlington Township for 16 years. Marjorie also served as Bradford County Auditor for many years until her retirement.
She was an active member and past president of the Bradford County Republican Women and was a delegate to the Pennsylvania State Republican Women. Marjorie was a member of the Troy Fire Department Auxiliary Station No. 2 and worked as a volunteer for the Towanda Elks Lodge.
She enjoyed time with her grandchildren and friends and traveling. Marjorie provided loving care for her father-in-law, Alfred A. Hulslander, for many years.
Marjorie is also survived by her brothers and sisters-in-law, James and Lois Neiley of Bangor and Robert and Mary Neiley of Standing Stone; a sister-in-law, Edith Hulslander of Lakeland, FL and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
John was born on May 6, 1933 in Burlington, a son of the late Alfred A. and Esther Weed Hulslander.
John was a graduate of Troy High School, Class of 1951.
John worked on the Hulslander family farm his entire life and also served as West Burlington Township Supervisor for many years. He was a member of the Troy Fire Department and the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks Lodge No. 2191, Towanda and a former director of the Troy Agway.
John loved sports, especially softball, as in earlier years, he played on two softball teams. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals and Penn State fan and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and friends, hunting, the outdoors and animals.
In addition to his children and grandchildren, John is survived by his sister, Edith Hulslander of Lakeland, FL; a brother-in-law, Richard Morrell of Pine City, NY; a sister-in-law, Anna Mary Hulslander of Columbia Cross Roads; his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, James and Lois Neiley of Bangor and Robert and Mary Neiley of Standing Stone; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, George Hulslander and Alfred W. Hulslander, Jr. and two sisters, Frances Morrell and Adelaide Pierce.

Dale Hetherington

Mr. Dale R. Hetherington, age 50, of RR3, Box 3679 Sandor Rd., Laceyville, PA passed away at his home on Tuesday afternoon, April 8, 2003 after an illness. He was formerly of Port Richey, FL.
He was born in Philadelphia on Oct. 8, 1952, a son of Marion Buller Hetherington of Laceyville and the late H. Dale Hetherington. While growing up in Philadelphia, he was a member of the graduating class of 1970 from the West Catholic High School for Boys.
While living in the Laceyville area, he was employed at Procter & Gamble Paper Plant in Mehoopany in their logistics department and also in their training department.
He was a member of the Sons of the American Legion, Rought Hall Post #510, Black Walnut. In his spare time, he enjoyed hunting, hiking and spending time with his family and friends.
Besides his mother, he is survived by his wife of 29 years, Coleen E. Green Hetherington of Laceyville; two daughters and their husbands, Jennifer and Charles Branham, Tallahassee, FL and Dyan and John Hudson of New Port Richey, FL and a son, Dale R. Hetherington of Philadelphia; a sister, Marion Merwin of Hudson, FL and two brothers, Stephen Hetherington of Cherry Hill, NJ and Mark Hetherington of Palmer, MA.
As it was Mr. Hetherington’s wishes, there will be no funeral services. The family will receive friends at the Sheldon Funeral Home, Main St., Laceyville, on Saturday afternoon, April 12 from 4 to 6 p.m. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.
Leona Harvey

Miss Leona E. Harvey, R.N., age 88, formerly of Wyalusing, PA passed away on Thursday, April 3, 2003 at the Skilled Nursing Unit of the Memorial Hospital, Towanda.
Leona was born in Wyalusing, on Jan. 26, 1915, a daughter of the late Henry and Lillian Vanderpoole Harvey. She graduated from the Wyalusing High School and later graduated from the University Of Pennsylvania School Of Nursing in Philadelphia in 1940.
Leona was a private duty nurse in Philadelphia for many years, moving back to Bradford County in 2002.
She was a member of the Wyalusing Presbyterian Church.
Surviving are nieces and nephews.
Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family, with interment in the Wyalusing Cemetery.
Funeral services were under the direction of the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 1 Grovedale Lane, Wyalusing.
Milton Budd

Milton C. (Bud) Budd of Hillsgrove, PA passed away on Thursday, April 3, 2003 at his home in Hillsgrove, PA.
Bud was born on Sept. 4, 1933 in Philadelphia, the son of the late Benjamin E. Budd and Martha Worthington Budd. He attended Colwyn High School, graduating in the Class of 1951. From there, he went into the Army, enlisting in 1953 and serving during the Korean Conflict. After being honorably discharged from the military, he went to work at the Philadelphia Navy Yard for a number of years. He married Mariann Potts of Philadelphia on Oct. 12, 1963. He spent most of his career working as an electrician for Westinghouse in Springfield, PA. He purchased a cabin in Hillsgrove in 1987. Bud was a skilled handyman and reconstructed his cabin as an all year residence before retiring in 1997.
Bud was a member of the Colwyn Volunteer Fire Company and a life member of the Colwyn American Legion.
Surviving are his spouse, Mariann Budd, at home; three sons and daughters-in-law, Brian and Tammy Budd, Pottstown, Kenneth and Gloria Budd, Lancaster, Adam Budd, Drexel Hill; two sisters and brother-in-law, June Card, Lansdale, and Martha and Robert Coles, Hagerstown, MD; a sister-in-law, Anne Budd Scheuller, Ft. Meyers, FL; two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his brother, Benjamin Budd and his sister, Ann Kloper.
A memorial service was held on Saturday, April 5 at 11 a.m. at the Hillsgrove Union Church, with Pastor Phyllis A. Hunter, pastor of the Forksville United Methodist Charge, officiating.
The family provided the flowers and memorials are directed to Guthrie Hospice, RR1, Box 154, Towanda, PA 18848.

Ruth Barnes

Ruth Isabel (Crisman) Barnes passed away at Lockport Memorial Hospital on Wednesday, April 2, 2003 following a brief illness. She was just shy of her 100th birthday.
She was the daughter of Mary Leone Benninger and Charles Morris Crisman. Born in Meshoppen on May 8, 1903, she married Lester William Barnes on Dec. 23, 1922 in Niagara Falls, NY while on their lunch break from the Nabisco Shredded Wheat Company. They were married for 32 years when he died in 1954.
Ruth came to Niagara Falls with her mother and stepfather, James Gay in 1920. She was followed from Pennsylvania by Lester Barnes with the purpose of proposing.
Ruth and Lester built a lovely home for themselves on Pasadena Avenue where she lived until she was 97. She then lived with her son, Harold in Ransomville and spent her remaining years getting loving care at the Odd Fellows and Rebekah Nursing Home in Lockport. She was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church.
She is survived by two sons, Maurice W. Barnes and his wife, Ruth of Youngstown, NY and Harold L. Barnes and his wife, Susan of Ransomville, NY; 10 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren and several nieces.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband in 1954 and her daughter, Mary Jane Hendershot.
Friends called on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Lane Funeral Home, Inc., 8622 Buffalo Ave., Niagara Falls where funeral services were held on Saturday at 10 a.m. She was interred next to her husband in Riverdale Cemetery, Lewiston, NY.

Betty Wolf

Betty Wolf, age 59, of Wyalusing RR1, PA, passed away on Thursday, May 22, 2003 at her home.
She was born on Aug. 14, 1943, in Meshoppen, a daughter of LeRoy Francis and Hazel Emmons Shoemaker.
Betty had been a resident of Wyalusing for 23 years.
Prior to her retirement, she was employed by local garment industries, and later for the Wyalusing Hotel in housekeeping, giving 14 years of service.
She enjoyed time spent doing crossword puzzles, was a Nascar fan and enjoyed collecting salt and pepper shakers.
Surviving are her mother, Hazel Shoemaker; three children and their spouses, Hope and Kevin Johnson of Wyalusing, Dawn and Derek Bouse of Laceyville, Raymond Wolf of Cresco; sisters and brothers, Glen and Lorraine Shoemaker, Ronald and Lori Shoemaker, William and Rose Mary Shoemaker, Donald Shoemaker, Carl Shoemaker; five grandchildren, Dale, Michael, Nina, Devin and Kailin and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held today, Thursday, May 29 at 7 p.m. at the McHenry Funeral Home, 106 Church St., Wyalusing.
Friends and family may call on Thursday at the funeral home from 5 to 7 p.m.

Charlotte Vosefski

Charlotte (Champluvier) Vosefski, of Apalachin, NY, went to be with her Lord after a brief illness, Saturday, May 17, 2003. She was predeceased by her parents, Tracey and Vera Champluvier.
She was a retired General Electric Corporation employee, retiring after 25 years of service. She was an avid shopper and was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.
Survivors include her beloved husband of 30 years, Richard M. Vosefski, Apalachin, NY; three daughters and sons-in-law, Kelly and Ray Rodriguez, Newark Valley, NY, Donna and Kenneth Angulas, Apalachin, NY and Deborah and Richard Holden, Owego, NY; two stepdaughters and sons-in-law, Michele and James Georgoudes, Endwell, NY, Beverly and Kenneth Berman, Westchester, IL; 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild; one sister and brother-in-law, Mary Ann and Richard McDonough, Punta Gorda, FL; one brother and sister-in-law, Tracey and Mabel Champluvier, Towanda; many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, May 21 at 10 a.m. from the Allen Memorial Home, 511-513 E. Main St., Endicott with the Rev. Marilyn Barnard officiating. Interment was in the Wyalusing Cemetery.
The family received friends at the funeral home on Tuesday, May 20 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Janet Thompson

Janet M. Thompson, RR2, Meshoppen, PA, died on Sunday, May 25, 2003 at the Tyler Memorial Hospital in Tunkhannock. She was born in Meshoppen on Sept. 8, 1935, daughter of Verna Clapper McMicken Davis of South Auburn and the late Charles H. McMicken.
She was a graduate of Meshoppen High School, Class of 1953, and on Saturday evening, she had attended her 50th year class reunion.
Janet was a member of St. Joachim’s Catholic Church in Meshoppen and a member of South Auburn Grange #1188. For many years she served as correspondent for the South Auburn news in the Rocket-Courier newspaper in Wyalusing.
She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Charles L. Thompson; sons, Aaron Thompson of Omaha, NE, Gregory Thompson of Kolo, Germany; a daughter, Kelly Minuski of Bear Creek; brothers, Mickey McMicken of Laceyville and Neale McMicken of Tunkhannock and nine grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 29, at 11 a.m. from the Sheldon Funeral Home, Main St., Meshoppen, with Father Joseph J. Manarchuck, Pastor of St. Joachim’s Catholic Church in Meshoppen. Interment will be in St. Joachim’s Cemetery, Meshoppen.
