Howard Hugo

Howard L. “Mike” Hugo, age 73, of New Albany, PA, passed away on Sunday, June 6, 2004 in the Highland Care Center of Laporte. Mike was born June 17, 1930 in New Albany, a son of the late Ivan and Helen Vogel Hugo. He was a 1948 graduate of New Albany High School. After graduating, he worked with his father in the family-owned feed mill. He retired from Sylvania of Towanda in 1992, after 30 years of service. Upon his retirement, he worked once again with his father in the feed mill until its closing in 1998. Through the 1960s, he was very active in the New Albany Fire Department, serving for many years as chief. Mike was always very community minded, serving as president of the borough council and spent many nights walking the water lines with John Hanzok, looking for leaks. A lot of people came to rely on him for help and he will be missed by the community of New Albany. In his spare time, he enjoyed time spent with his grandchildren, raising beef cattle and horses on his farm, hunting and fishing. Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Doris Wilcox Hugo of New Albany; sons and daughters-in-law, Roger and Chris Leljedal Hugo, Watkins Glen, NY, Ross and Clara Hugo, New Albany and Brent Hugo of New Albany; grandchildren, Morgan, Courtney and Mason Hugo; step-grandchildren, Thomas and Jamie Silverstrim; sisters and brothers-in-law, Pauline and Jim McMahon, New Albany, Bernice and Art Yonkin, Dushore, Carolyn and Harold Rider, Eagles Mere; a sister-in-law, Virginia Hugo of New Albany; an aunt, Florence Palmer of New Albany; an uncle, Maynard Hugo and by several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Kenneth Hugo. A graveside memorial service was held on Wednesday, June 9 at 2 p.m. in the Hillcrest Cemetery in New Albany, with the Rev. Ronald Troup, pastor, officiating. The family provided their own flowers. Memorials may be directed to the New Albany Library or to Serve Inc., PO Box 93, Monroeton, PA 18832. Arrangements were entrusted to the Russell P. McHenry Funeral Home, 119 Carpenter St., Dushore.

Lucas Johnson

Lucas Wayne Johnson, age 24, of Terrytown, PA, passed away on Thursday, June 3, 2004 as a result of an automobile accident. Lucas was born in Towanda on Jan. 19, 1980, son of Bruce E. and Linda S. Johnson. He graduated from Wyalusing Valley High School, a member of the Class of 1999. He was a hard worker and was employed by Penn’s Best Pallet Company of Meshoppen, beginning part-time in high school and continuing full-time until the time of his death. Lucas was an enthusiastic pool player and was a member of the Marie Antoinette pool team. He also enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman. Surviving are his parents, Bruce and Linda, at home; brother and special friend, Bruce E. Johnson, Jr. and Stephanie Gilbert, Terrytown; his paternal grandmother, Iva Johnson, Terrytown; maternal grand- parents, Ronald and Doris Johnson, Terrytown; numerous aunts and uncles and a nephew, Jordan Stephen Johnson. Funeral services were held on Monday, June 7 at 11 a.m. at the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 1 Grovedale Lane, Wyalusing, with the Rev. Glenn R. Kennedy, pastor the Wyalusing United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment was in the Wyalusing Cemetery. Friends called at the funeral home on Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. and from 10 a.m. on Monday until the time of the service.

Judith L. Couser Wargo, 59, of Laceyville, PA, passed away Sunday, May 30, 2004 as the result of an automobile accident in Stevens Township, Bradford County, PA Born Jan. 15, 1945 in Altos, OK, she was the daughter of the late Carl Jackson Couser and Josephine Couser Fulton. Judi was a graduate of Odessa High School and attended Odessa College. She was employed for many years as a legal secretary and most recently as part owner of a business in Laceyville. With a kind, nurturing, loving spirit, she was always willing to lend support to family and friends. She possessed a deep appreciation and love of nature and the outdoors. Her family and friends will miss her beautiful singing voice and playful laugh. Judi is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Todd and Chris Strong of Flower Mound, TX; two granddaughters, Madison and Camryn Strong; brothers, Charles Couser and wife, Irene of Mineola, TX, Carl Couser and wife, Gail of San Antonio, TX, Roger Couser of Odessa, TX; sisters, Mary Cotton of Haslet, TX, Pam Frazier and husband, Donald of Pueblo, CO, Elizabeth Harris and husband, Jim of Odessa, TX, as well as nieces, Allison Alvarado, Marion Couser-Keita, Jennifer Stiver, Emily Chovan and nephew, Bradley Frazier. A celebration of her life, in her honor was held on Sunday, June 6 in Flower Mound, TX. Mr. Charles L. Thompson, age 70, of 212 Maple Rd., Wilkes-Barre, PA, where he lived with his daughter, passed away at the Heritage House in Wilkes-Barre early Sunday morning, June 6, 2004. Charlie formerly lived in South Auburn for 25 years. Born in Bronx, NY on July 22, 1933, he was the son of the late Robert and Anna Weber Thompson. Charlie was the husband of the former Janet M. McMicken Thompson, who passed away on May 25, 2003. Growing up in New York City, he was a graduate of the Flushing High School, Queens, NY, Class of 1952. After graduation in 1952, he entered the United States Navy, serving his country until 1956 in Korea, the Philippines and the Aleutian Islands. After the service, he lived in St. Petersburg, FL, employed as a police officer for the St. Petersburg Police Department for 20 years, from 1959 until 1979. After his retirement from the police department, he and his wife moved to South Auburn where they lived near the McMicken family homestead for the next 25 years. Charlie was employed at the Susquehanna County Jail in Montrose for nine years, retiring in 1999. After his wife’s death, he became very ill, and he had to move into the residence with his daughter and her family. He was a member of St. Joachim’s Roman Catholic Church in Meshoppen. Charlie was also an active member of the South Auburn Grange #1188 and a member of the Retired Police Association of St. Petersburg, FL. In his spare time, he enjoyed hunting and fishing and visiting with his friends and relatives. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, with whom he lived, Kelly and Rick Minuski of Bear Creek; two sons and their wives, Greg and Christina Thompson of Koln, Germany and Aaron and Pam Thompson of Omaha, NE; his mother-in-law, Verna Clapper McMicken Davis, South Auburn; 10 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 10 at 10:30 a.m. from the Sheldon Funeral Home, Main St., Meshoppen, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. from St. Joachim’s Roman Catholic Church, Meshoppen, with Father Duane Gavitt of the church, officiating. Interment will be in the St. Joachim’s Cemetery in Meshoppen. Lawrence Pace

Lawrence D. Pace, 42, of Towanda RR3, Franklin Township, PA, passed away on Tuesday, June 1, 2004, unexpectedly, at his home. Born Aug. 10, 1961 in Kerrville, TX, he was the son of the late J.B. Pace and Clara Chandler. In earlier years, Lawrence was employed by various companies in the oil industry in Texas, by Taylor Packing in Wyalusing and Canton Manufacturing in Canton. Surviving are his companion, Deniece Gleason, at home; his son, Ray Pace of Towanda; nephews, Herbie and Michael Hibbert of Towanda, Memphis Allen of Franklindale, John and Sandra Borden of Franklindale and Julie Hibbert of Monroeton. Funeral services were private and there were no calling hours. Interment was in the Franklin Center Cemetery, Franklin Township. Arrangements were under the Maryott-Bowen Funeral Home, Towanda.

Emma H. Miller, 87, of Montrose, PA, died on Monday, June 7, 2004 at Endless Mountains Health Systems, Montrose. Born Nov. 24, 1916 in Montrose, she was the daughter of the late Minor and Clara [Wilbur] Henry, Sr. Mrs. Miller married Wayne W. Miller, who predeceased her in death in January of 1980. She was a member of the Fairdale United Methodist Church, where she was also involved in the United Methodist Women, Sunday School Superintendent and teacher. She ran a previous Girls Club in the Fairdale area. She also loved reading and crocheting. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Helen and Garey Thompson, Frankfort, KY; sons and daughter-in-law, Warren W. Miller, Montrose, Russell H. and Christine Miller, Dillon, SC; three grandchildren, Donna Fritts, Theresa Keplinger, Wayne M. Phillips; six great-grandsons; sisters, Ida Canfield, New Milford, Elizabeth Slater, Vestal, NY; nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by six brothers and four sisters. Services will be held today, Thursday, June 10 at 10 a.m. at the Bartron-Myer Funeral Home, Inc., a Selected Independent Funeral Home, 74 Church Street, Montrose. The family received friends from 7-9 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home. Thelma Kelder

Thelma Corson Kelder, 96, of the Personal Care Home of Memorial Hospital, Towanda, formerly of North Fourth St., Towanda, PA, passed away on Wednesday, June 2, 2004 at The Skilled Nursing Unit, Memorial Hospital, Towanda. Born Sept. 5, 1907 in Evergreen, she was the daughter of the late Louis and Mattie Covey Corson. Thelma was a graduate of New Albany High School and of Bloomsburg Normal School. She taught school in a one-room schoolhouse in Ridgebury Township, at the Monroe Franklin Elementary School, Wyalusing Elementary School and the Special Education Class at the J. Andrew Morrow Elementary School in Towanda. Thelma continued her education at Mansfield and Penn State Universities until her retirement in 1966. Thelma was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, Towanda, the 20th Century Club and the Pennsylvania Retired Teacher’s Association. Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Jeanne and Thomas Gunn of Cromwell, CT; her grandchildren, Linda Bareham of Ardsley, Michael Gunn of Marlton, NJ, Jennifer Hayes of Bernardsville, NJ; a great-grandson, Schuyler Bareham of Ardsley. She was preceded in death by her husband, Karl Bird Kelder on Sept. 21, 1992. The funeral service was held on Saturday, June 5 at 2 p.m. at the Maryott-Bowen Funeral Home, 217 York Ave., Towanda, with the Rev. Maureen Hipple, rector of Christ Episcopal Church, Towanda, officiating. Interment followed in the Union Cemetery, East Smithfield. The family received friends on Friday evening from 7 to 9 at the funeral home. Mary Jean DeGaramo, 71, of Hammond, NY, died on Friday, June 4, 2004 at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Nannette and Calvin Dean, Montrose, PA. Born Nov. 2, 1932 in Endicott, NY, she was the daughter of Ruth E. (Cox) Hessler and the late Warren Nelson Hessler, Sr. Mrs. DeGaramo married Gordon John DeGaramo, Sr., who predeceased her in death in May of 2001. She was a member of the First Congregational Church of Morristown, NY. She also enjoyed gardening, animals and traveling. She had many talents including, music, writing and artistic painting. Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Nannette and Calvin Dean, Montrose, Bonnie and Randy Bernal, Reno, NV; sons and daughters-in-law, Gordon John, Jr. and Patricia DeGaramo, Afton, NY, Peter Joel and Susan DeGaramo, Great Barrington, MA, Michael W. and Sharon DeGaramo, Bridgeport, NY, Daniel E. and Joan DeGaramo, Laceyville; 18 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; her mother, Ruth E. (Cox) Hessler, Dunedin, FL; sisters and brothers-in-law, Helen and William A. Phillips, Clearwater, FL, Carolyn and W. Clara Daly

Clara A. Daly R.N., age 97, formerly of Mildred, PA. and Scottsdale, AZ. passed away on May 25, 2004. She was born in Mildred on June 15, 1906, a daughter of the late John and Prudence McDonald Daly. Clara graduated as a Registered Nurse, in 1932 from the Binghamton State Hospital School of Nursing. She obtained her B.S. from Syracuse University in 1959 and her M.P.H. from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She was a Public Heath Nurse for the State of New York in Dansville, NY and also Albany, NY, and the State of Arizona Dept. of Public Health from 1966 to 1976. She served in the US Peace Corps in Montserrat, West Indies from 1976 to 1979. She resided in Albany, NY until moving to Scottsdale. Surviving are a sister, Florence Daly Gray, Raleigh, NC and several generations of nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, June 11, at 10 a.m. in St. Francis of Assisi Church, Mildred, with the Rev. Kenneth M. Seegar, pastor of St. Mary’s of the Assumption Church, Wyalusing, presiding. Interment will be in the adjoining parish cemetery. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 206 Water Street, Dushore, PA.

Harold Bush

Harold B. “Bushy” Bush, age 76, a well-known resident of Standing Stone, Wysox Township, PA, passed away on Monday, May 31, 2004 at the Skilled Nursing Unit, Memorial Hospital, Towanda, after a courageous battle with cancer. Mr. Bush was born on Nov. 2, 1927 at the Methodist parsonage in Durell to the late Guy Carlton and Grace (Wallace) Bush. He was the beloved husband of the former Eloise Chaffee. A lifelong resident of Standing Stone, he had a prosperous career in business, having worked as a youngster in his father’s general store and later at the Towanda Western Auto store as a part-time employee for over 30 years. Mr. Bush retired in 1982 from GTE Sylvania, where he had been employed for 30 years as an accountant, eventually becoming accounting manager of the engineering division. Bushy enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1946 and served as a trumpeter with the 298th Army Band. His travels took him all over Germany, France and Belgium, during the occupation of post-war Europe. Mr. Bush was a graduate of Towanda High School and Rider College, Trenton, NY. He was a talented and avid musician, as well as a man of many interests. He loved traveling and spending time at his vacation home in Arizona. An active participant in many musical organizations, he was in the choir, orchestra and band at Towanda High School and the Sylvania German Band and Men’s Chorus. He served as the bugler for Towanda American Legion Post 42, and played taps for many military funerals. He was also involved in many civic organizations including the National Association of Accountants, the Sylvania Men’s Club, the MG Car Club of America, Towanda Elks Lodge No. 2191, the Towanda Gun Club, the Sylvania Employees Association and the Sylvania Quarter Century Club. He was a past treasurer of the Bradford County Republican Party, a Standing Stone Township auditor and a Wysox Fire Company auditor. Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Eloise; a son, Jeffrey C. Bush and his wife, Lisa of Yardley; a stepdaughter, Sharon Jones Murray of Standing Stone; a son-in-law, John Murray of Muncy; a stepdaughter-in-law, Suzanne “Sue” Jones of Towanda; his special grandchildren, Sarah and Bryan Bush of Yardley, Eric Jones of Towanda, Tanya Hartman and her husband, Ed of Sheshequin, Jodie Moyer of North Carolina, Kevin Murray and his wife, Pam of Muncy and Darin Murray and his wife, Rebecca of Pope Air Force Base, Fayetteville, NC; great-grandchildren, Eric Anthony, Mitchell and Dayton Jones, Steele Hartman, Kevin, Thomas and Joe Murray and Helen Grace Murray; his mother-in-law, Helen R. Chaffee of Skilled Nursing Unit, Towanda; a sister, Gladys Parker of Hop Bottom a niece, Brenda Zick and husband, William of Hop Bottom; a brother-in-law, Ellis Chaffee and wife, Minnie of Rome. Mr. Bush also counted Jay Costanzo of Arizona as a treasured friend. He was predeceased by his brother, Francis; a sister, Eleanor (Bush) Zahniser and his stepson, Larry F. Jones. Friends and family called at the Maryott-Bowen Funeral Home, 217 York Ave., Towanda, from 6 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, June 3. The Towanda Elks Lodge No. 2191 held a memorial service on Thursday at 6 p.m. The funeral service was held on Friday, June 4 at 11 a.m. at the funeral home, with the Rev. Harry Ferguson and the Rev. Robert Martin, officiating. Interment was in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Towanda, with the Towanda American Legion Post No. 42 according full military honors. Memorial contributions may be made to the Towanda Memorial Hospital Hospice and the Happy Tails No-Kill Animal Shelter of North Towanda in Harold P. Bush’s memory.

Jean Mae Rosengrant Belles, 77, widow of Karl A. Belles, formerly of East Towanda and Sayre, PA, passed away on Tuesday afternoon, June 1, 2004 at the Highlands Care Center, Laporte. Born June 5, 1926 in Tunkhannock, she was a daughter of the late Wilmot A. Rosengrant and Clio Storey Rosengrant. She was a graduate of Tunkhannock High School and Wyoming Seminary. On June 13, 1947, she married Karl A. Belles, in Tunkhannock. Jean and Karl owned and operated their five-and-dime store in Laceyville, for five years. They later moved to Towanda in 1964. Jean was formerly employed by the J.J. Newberry Store in Towanda, Claverack Rural Electric in Wysox and the First National Bank of Bradford County in Towanda. She was later employed by the Citizens & Northern Bank in Towanda for many years, until her retirement in 1985. Jean was a member of the Towanda American Legion Post No. 42 Auxiliary. Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Royce and Deborah Belles of Rome; her granddaughters, Stephanie VanDerlyke and her husband, Peter VanDerlyke of Clifton Springs, NY and Nikki Rae Belles and Kara Ann Belles, both of Rome; her great-grandchildren, Colby Marie VanDerlyke and Jarod Christopher VanDerlyke of Clifton Springs; two sisters, Janet Reynolds and her husband, John Reynolds of Tunkhannock and Wilma Traver of Dallas and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Karl A. Belles, on March 19, 2004 and by a son, Gary Karl Belles, on Jan. 3, 1999. A memorial service was held Tuesday, June 8 at 4 p.m. at the Maryott-Bowen Funeral Home, 217 York Ave., Towanda, with Pastor Elwyn Patrick of the Herrickville Wesleyan Church, officiating. Interment was in the Rome Cemetery, Rome. There were no calling hours.

Elsie Kathryn Liddick, age 67, of Stevensville, PA, passed away on Sunday, May 30, 2004 as a result of an automobile accident. She was born on Aug. 10, 1936 in New Berlin, a daughter of John Henry and Annabelle Isenhouser Wright. Elsie had been a resident of this area since 1978. She enjoyed sewing, ceramics, quilting and loved cats. She especially enjoyed time spent with her family. She leaves surviving her mother, Annabelle Wright; her children, Kevin “Pudd” and Dawn Liddick of LeRayville, Felicia and Robert Goodenough of Terrytown, Jeffrey “Joe” and Cathy Liddick of Berlin, WI; sisters and brother, Fern Orten, John (Skip) Wright, Jr. and Joyce Koppenhaver; her 20 grandchildren and 11-1/2 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father; her husband, Richard, on May 5, 2004; two sons, H. Keith Liddick in 1979 and Gregory and Judith Wargo Liddick on May 30, 2004. Gregory C. Liddick, Sr., age 48, of Laceyville, PA, passed away on May 30, 2004 as a result of an automobile accident. He was born on Aug. 17, 1955, son of the late Richard C. and Elsie K. Wright Liddick. He is a veteran, having served in the United States Army. Gregory had been a resident of this area since 1978. He was self-employed and owned and operated his own stone quarry. He was a life member of the National Rifle Association and enjoyed his time spent hunting and being in the outdoors. He is survived by two sons, Gregory Liddick, Jr. of Wilkes-Barre and Michael Liddick of Laceyville; his maternal grandmother, Annabelle Wright; brothers and sisters-in-law, Felicia and Bob Goodenough of Terrytown and Jeffrey “Joe” and Cathy Liddick of Berlin, WI, and by several aunts, uncles, many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, H. Keith Liddick in 1979; by his father, Richard C. Liddick on May 5, 2004, his mother, Elsie K. Julia M. Arrowood Arthurhultz, Second St., Tunkhannock, PA, died on Tuesday evening, May 25, 2004 in Mercy Hospital, Scranton. She was born in Mehoopany on May 13, 1918, daughter of the late Earle D. and Olive I. Lewis Goodwin. She was a graduate of Tunkhannock High School, Class of 1936. She was employed for 38 years in the post office at Mehoopany, serving as acting postmaster during the Johnson administration. She held dual memberships in the Mehoopany Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School for over 23 years and Grace Christian Church in Okeechobee, FL. She loved working in the kitchen and will always be remembered for her baking. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Bruce Arrowood; a son, Lewis Willis Arrowood and a brother, Bernard Goodwin. Surviving are her husband, Wayne L. Arthurhultz; sons, Bruce R. Robert A. Dahms

Mr. Robert A. Dahms, age 55, of RR 1 Box 1696, Laceyville, PA, formerly of Ringoes, NJ, passed away early Saturday morning, May 29, 2004 at his home in South Auburn, PA. Mr. Dahms lived in the Ringoes area most of his life, before retiring and moving to South Auburn. Robert was born in Somerville, NJ on Aug. 20, 1948, son of the late Carl W. and Helen Rotz Dahms. He was also the stepson of the late Martha Quick Dahms. Mr. Dahms was a graduate of the Somerville High School, Class of 1967. He served his country during the Vietnam Era, stationed in Korea, as a member of the U.S. Army from 1969 until 1971. During most of his life, Robert was a heavy equipment operator, a truck driver and mechanic, until ill health forced his retirement. Then, he and his wife moved to the Endless Mountains Area of Pennsylvania. Surviving are his wife, the former Corrine A. Anderson of South Auburn, to whom he was married for 25 years and 10 days; his daughter, Mrs. John (Kimberly) Menzak of Phillipsburg, NJ, and his special grandson, John Robert (Jack) Menzak of Phillipsburg, NJ; a brother, Richard C. Dahms of Franklin Twp., NJ; a sister, Margaret (Peggy) Allen of Anniston, AL; three stepbrothers, Garry Morrow of New Jersey, Thomas Morrow of Texas and Arthur Morrow of Pennsylvania and a step-sister, Betty Ann Wiecenski of New Jersey. Robert was a founding member of the Ignightors Gun Club in Somerville and a former member of the Princeton Elks Club. Memorial services will be held on Saturday, June 5, at 12 noon at the Old Greenwich Presbyterian Church in Stewartsville, NJ, with Rev. David Jones, pastor of the church, officiating. Interment will be at the convenience of the family. Arrangements were made through the Sheldon Funeral Home, Main Street, Meshoppen, PA.

Cynthia E. Osborne, 53, of Hallstead, PA, died Saturday, May 29, 2004 at Mid-Valley Hospital, Peckville, PA. Born October 10, 1950 in Carbondale, she was the daughter of the late Clarence, Sr. and Marie Avery Cobb. She was a Manager at U,S, Assemblies in Hallstead, PA. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Amy and Jim McCarthy, Waymart; six sisters and brothers-in-law, Claudette and Ken Pratt, New Milford, Donna and Spencer DeLancey, New Milford, Pat and Jim Morris, Great Bend, Mary and Robert Bonavita, Meshoppen, Debbie and Bernie Cudo, New Milford, Candy Hegedty, Wyalusing; one brother and sister-in-law, Clarence “Mickey” Jr. and Laurie Cobb, Taylor; granddaughters, Lindsey and Kelsey; goddaughter, Tammey Bonavita and nieces and nephews. A brother, Clifford Cobb, predeceased her. Services were held at 1 p.m., Wednesday, June 2 at Bartron-Myer Funeral Home, Inc., a Selected Independent Funeral Home, 74 Church Street, Montrose. The family received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home.

Dennis Mullane

Dennis K. Mullane, 4 Stonebridge Circle, Wichita, KS 67230, formerly of Wyalusing, PA and originally from Center Moriches, NY, died on Tuesday, May 25, 2004, after a long battle with lung cancer. He was 55 years of age. Dennis leaves his beloved and devoted wife, Valerie; his beloved children, Tamara, Keith and Chad; his beloved granddaughter, Ava and his son-in-law, Jon. Also surviving are his beloved mother, Dorothy Tofte Mullane Roberge and his loving sisters, Kathy Smith and Carleen Blakes and brothers, William Mullane and Kevin Mullane. Dennis was predeceased by his father, William “Chubby” Mullane. Dennis leaves a legacy of humanity and patriotism stemming from his profound respect and genuine caring for people, diversity and principles. He was a pioneer in the rendering industry and a moving force in civic causes and community welfare. A flood of tears will be shed in the loss of him and a flood of tears will be shed in the memory of the laughter and good humor he brought to the world, a place he left better than he found it. Viewing hours will be held at the Sinnickson Funeral Home, 203 Main St., Center Moriches, Long Island, on Friday, May 28 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Saturday morning at 8:45.

Robert Heath, Jr.

Robert Heath Jr., age 75, of New Albany, PA, passed away on Friday, May 21, 2004 at the Skilled Nursing Unit of the Memorial Hospital, Towanda. Bob was born in Dushore on Dec. 15, 1928, son of the late Robert, Sr. and Mary Ellen Hunsinger Heath. He attended Cherry Township High School and married the former Louise B. Montanye of Elmira, NY on Jan 12, 1952. Louise predeceased him on Feb. 7, 1993. Bob served with the U.S. Army in Korea and after the war, worked at the Endicott Johnson Shoe Mfg. Co. of Mildred, and was also engaged in logging. He later went to work for GTE Sylvania in Towanda, from which he retired after more than 25 years of service. Bob loved farming, which he did during all of his working and retired years. He raised horses and cows and enjoyed going to the different stockyard sales. He also enjoyed being with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a member of the Laddsburg Community Church. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Clarence Fenton, New Albany; a sister and brother-in-law, Margie and Harold O’Conner, Mildred; four brothers and sisters-in-law: George and Joann Heath, Mildred, Wesley and Elizabeth Heath, Colley, Ernest and Jeannie Heath, Towanda, John Heath, Wilkes-Barre; an aunt, Catherine Hunsinger, Laporte; brother-in-laws and spouses: Lyman Montanye, Elmira, NY, Philo and Agnes Montanye, Millerton, Lester Montanye, Pine City, NY, Raymond and Marjorie Montanye, Chemung, NY; a sister-in-law, Maryetta Voorhees, Columbia Cross Roads; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Cora Elchak of Lopez, on Dec. 3, 2003 and a brother, James W. Heath of Mildred, on Dec. 3, 1988. Services were held on Monday, May 24 at 10:30 a.m. from the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 206 Water St., Dushore, and was followed by funeral services at 11 a.m. at the Laddsburg Community Church, with the Rev. Sam Jordan, pastor, officiating. Interment was in Fairview Cemetery, Dushore. Friends called at the P. Dean Homer funeral home on Sunday, May 23 from 2 to 9 p.m. Graveside military services were accorded by McDermott Post #452 American Legion, Mildred. Members passed in review on Sunday evening at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

He was predeceased by his mother, Dorothy Smith and dear friend and companion, Marilyn DeGroat. He is survived by his children, Connie and Kenneth Sharer, Laceyville, Kenneth and Florence Fassett, Johnson City, Rita and Keith VanDeMark, Laceyville, Martin and Roberta Fassett, Winder, GA, Cathy and Brian Youells, Falls, Michael and Laurie Fassett, Buford, GA; 15 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and was a retired employee of Staiman Industries, Binghamton. At Ernest’s request, there were no calling hours or funeral service. Francis J. McCormick, 85, of Rush Township, PA died Friday, May 21, 2004 at Dar-Way Nursing Home, Forksville, PA. Born Aug. 19, 1918 in Rush Twp., he was the son of the late Frank and Anna Clark McCormick. He was an MP in the U.S. Army, serving in India during WWII. He was a member of VFW Post #6824, Owego, NY and also a member of the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. Survivors include several cousins and a lifelong friend and caregiver, Robert Coleman. Services were held Monday, May 24 at 10 a.m. at the Bartron-Myer Funeral Home, Inc., a Selected Independent Funeral Home, 74 Church Street, Montrose, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church on Irish Hill. The family received friends Sunday, May 23, from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home.

He was born Aug. 13, 1945, in Jersey City, NJ to Walter and Kathryn Bizup Raido, and was a seasonal resident from Sea Isle City, NJ and Lopez, PA. Mr. Raido was owner of a laundromat. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He was a member of VFW Post 8189, Homosassa and VFW Post 10087, Beverly Hills; life member of VFW Post 1963, Sea Isle City, NJ; Moose Lodge, Jersey City, NJ and American Legion Post 1000, Trenton, N.J. He attended Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, Beverly Hills, FL. Survivors include his wife, Carol Lee Raido of Beverly Hills, FL; mother, Kathryn Raido of Jersey City, NJ and three brothers, John Raido of Jersey City, NJ. Victor Raido of Little Ferry, NJ and Edward Raido of Secaucus, NJ. Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. from the P. Agnes E. (O’Connor) Palopoli, 83, wife of Anthony V. Palopoli of Phoenixville, PA, died on Friday, May 21, 2004 at the Phoenixville Hospital, Phoenixville. Born in Tunkhannock, she was the daughter of the late Martin and Lillian Mae (Parsons) O’Connor. Mrs. Palopoli lived in the Phoenixville area since 1954. She was a homemaker. She was a member of Saint Ann Roman Catholic Church, Phoenixville. Surviving, in addition to her husband, are two sons and daughters-in-law, Stephen M. and Mary Jo Palopoli, Pottstown, Anthony N. and Michelle Palopoli, Lebanon; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Beatrice Randall, Richboro and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister and two brothers. Relatives and friends attended the funeral mass in Saint Ann Roman Catholic Church, Main St., Phoenixville on Tuesday, May 25 at 11 a.m. The Rev. John J. Newns, pastor, officiated. Interment was in Limerick Garden of Memories, Limerick. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Saint Ann Roman Catholic Church, 502 South Main St., Phoenixville, PA 19460. Jean W. DeFarges, 76, RR3, Box 14-C, Meshoppen, PA, formerly of Media and Smithfield, passed away on Tuesday, May 25, 2004 at Tyler Memorial Hospital, Tunkhannock. Born in Philadelphia on June 10, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Edwin C. and Margaret Wagner Wick. She was a graduate of Upper Darby High School, Drexel Institute of Technology, with a degree in home economics. A member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, Tunkhannock, she was active in the Altar Guild and Episcopal Church Women, as well as being a choir member and Sunday School teacher. She was also a lay chaplain at Tyler Memorial Hospital and loved to help others. Jean was a caring mother, wife and grandmother. Surviving are her husband, J. Robert DeFarges; daughter, Susan Jean Payne, Bear, DE; two sons, J. Robert, Madawaska, ME and James G., St. George, UT; a sister, Shirley Snyder, Delaware; three grandsons and nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be held at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, Tunkhannock, on Friday, May 28 at 4 p.m., with the Rev. Cynthia Guthkelch, officiating. There will be no calling hours. Cremation at R.H. Jones Crematory, Tunkhannock, with private interment. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Peter’s Episcopal Altar Guild, Rt. 6 East, Tunkhannock, PA 18657. Arrangements are by the Harding-Litwin Funeral Home, 123 W. Tioga St., Tunkhannock.
