AMES - Richard S. Sr., 68, Indian Lake, passed away Jan. 26, 2004, at home. Born Feb. 1, 1935, in Wilmington, Del., the son of Harold and Alice (Woods) Ames. Preceded in death by parents and grandson, Zachary. Loving husband, father and grandfather. Survived by wife of 42 years former Rose M. Younker; children, Niomie, wife of Richard Collins; Deborah, wife of Russell Boyer, both of Central City; Samuel, married to the former Barbara Oldham, Cairnbrook; Alice, wife of Charles Albright, Windsor, Va.; and Richard Jr., married to the former Wendy Meck, Hooversville. Also survived by 15 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brother, Harold, Massachusetts; sister, Dorothy; and foster sister, Evelyn, both of Delaware. Dick was a member of Berkey Church of the Brethren, where he served as treasurer of the Sunday school class and men's fellowship. A U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean Conflict and an avid hunter and fisherman. HOKE - Ed, 76, Lilly, formerly of Windber, died Nov. 21, 2003. Born in Kingmont, Md., he was a frogman in the United States Navy during World War II. He served in the Asiatic-Pacific area, where he became a prisoner of war. After returning home, he was given a U.S. government form to sign that bound him not to speak publicly about what had been done to him while a prisoner. He received a fleet appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Md. Ed was a professional wrestler, known as "Farmer Jones" from 1951 to 1958. He made the grunt-and-groan circuit with the likes of Don Eagle and Gypsy Joe, who were early television favorites. He made one appearance in the Cambria County War Memorial ring against Bozo Braz. The former Johnstown police captain, Pete Chiodo, was the referee. Ed was president of the Johnstown Jets Hockey Club, sponsor of the Jets in the North American Hockey League. He was district manager for Spector Freight System in Johnstown. Ed was employed by the Cambria County Office on Aging, transportation, in Ebensburg. Interment was at Mount Hope Cemetery, South Fork. Survived by dearest friend and companion, June Costlow, and seven children.

KARASHOWSKY - Ruth, 83, Hooversville, died Jan. 26, 2004, at Select Specialty Hospital, Johnstown. Born Feb. 14, 1920, in Hooversville, daughter of Charles J. and Ella (Helman) Fyock. Preceded in death by parents; husband, John; sister, Florence Birch; and brothers, Robert Leroy and Earl J. Fyock and Foster Sabin. KEAN - Mildred Louise, 91, formerly of Bolivar and Johnstown, died Jan. 26, 2004, at The Bethlen Home, Ligonier. Born Jan. 19, 1913, in Derry, daughter of Dallas and Cora Etta (Clawson) Shaffer. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert Earl, who died in 1985, after 48 years of marriage; brother, Clarence "Pickey"; and sisters, Ethel, Velma and Mary Malcomson and Helen Telischak. Survived by son, Mack, married to the former Caroline Fleegle, Elkridge, Md.; daughter, Roberta, married to James Munshower, Bolivar, with whom she previously resided; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; and six stepgreat-grandchildren; and sister, Grace Snyder, Uniontown. Retired from Conemaugh Valley Memorial Hospital, working in the laundry department from 1958 until 1963. Member of Bolivar United Methodist Church. Preceded in death by sister, Ruby Elliot, and brothers, Lewis Jr. and Richard Shaffer. Survived by wife, the former Florence Edmiston, to whom he was married for over 70 years, and daughters, Elaine, married to Bruce Cooper, Phoenix, Ariz., and Nancy, married to George Carthew, Allentown. Also survived by eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; and sisters, Garnet Wonder, Johnstown, and Daisy Shaffer, New York City. Howard was a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown and retired as a works accountant from Bethlehem Steel Corp., Johnstown Plant. He was a board member of the Cambria City Mission, a member of the Walnut Grove Church of the Brethren and an associate member of St. Petersburg, Fla. Church of the Brethren.
