Born in Manns Choice, Bedford County, on Wednesday, May 25, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Norman and Marie (Fochtman) Burkett. She was a housewife. She was the wife of Lawrence B. Suhrie, whom she married on May 2, 1946. She was a member of the St. Thomas Catholic Church, Bedford, where she was a member of the Ladies Guild. Her family was her constant pride, she enjoyed cooking for her family and entertaining them, she was also and avid gardener. In addition to her husband, she is survived by daughter, Mary Loretto, wife of Pierre Bellicini, Erie; son, John L. Suhrie, Canonsburg; daughter, Barbara, wife of Greg Guise, Gaithersburg, Md.; son, Paul R. Suhrie, East Stroudsburg; son, Dale T., husband of Jackie (Hinson) Suhrie, Alum Bank; son, Carl W., husband of Ann (Burdo) Suhrie, Bradford Woods; daughter, Rose K., wife of Dan Berbert, Montgomery Village, Md.; daughter, R. LEFTWICH - Dr. Charles W.
LEFTWICH - Dr. Charles W., 74, Henderson, Nev., died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004. Born March 1, 1929, in Johnstown, he received his baccalaureate degree from Lincoln University and then went on to serve in the Korean War. He returned to Pennsylvania to complete his masterıs degree at Temple University and taught in the public school system in Philadelphia until his work with inner city gangs brought him to the attention of Harvard educators. He was asked to attend the Harvard College of Education, from which he earned his doctorate in educational administration. He became the assistant superintendent of schools in Boston during the turbulent school desegregation years of the 1970s and played a large part in the public school desegregation process in Boston and later in Cleveland. Ultimately, he entered academia and became a tenured professor of education at Texas A&M University (Commerce) and then department chair and finally dean of the college of education at Fort Hays State University. He loved teaching and he loved his students. He was a marvelous, gifted teacher. Indeed he was magic in the classroom. Upon retirement, he continued to teach part time at UNLV in Las Vegas. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, William S. and Deane B. Leftwich. He is survived by his devoted wife of 13 years, Patricia Grace Tweeddale, Henderson, Nev.; a son, Charles M. Leftwich, Boston; a daughter, Gail Leftwich, Washington, D.C.; a brother, N. Henry Leftwich, Johnstown; a sister, Ann Wright, Johnstown; nephews, Hank Leftwich, New Jersey, and Bill and Jim Wright, Johnstown; sisters-in-law, Jeanne L. Malkani, Austin, Texas, and Kathleen Durik, Farmingdale, N.J.; nieces, Susan Leftwich, Johnstown, and Lisa Gindelsperger, Windber; and his adoring niece, Kathryn Kilburn, Atlanta. Sleasman of Ligonier and Hilda Shawley Sleasman of Johnstown. In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband of 24 years, Emerson Nash, and three half-brothers, Grover J. STILES - Russell Allen Sr., 74, Keystone Avenue, Cresson, died Jan. 30, 2004, at Altoona Center for Nursing Care, after an extended illness. Born April 6, 1929, in Lilly, son of the late Ivan Mack and Violet (Hughes) Stiles. Preceded in death by daughter, Carol Ann McCaulley, and infant daughters, Mary and Margaret. Survived by wife, the former Nancy Jean Casher, whom he married on Oct. 25, 1952; children, Russell A. Stiles Jr., and wife, Patricia, Altoona; Theresa Benzie, Gallitzin; David, Vandergrift; Rebecca Stiles, Gallitzin; Susan Prosser, Johnstown; and Peggy Gaida, and husband, Dan, Ashville; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Also survived by brother, Dennis, Florida; and sons-in-law, Johnathan McCaulley, Altoona, and Louis Benzie, Gallitzin. Graduate of Great Lakes Naval Academy, Illinois. Navy veteran of Korean War and served in the Mediterranean Sea. Engaged in the Amphibious Airborne Invasion of Vieques. Retired after 39 years of service with Conrail, having served as yardmaster in Cresson and Altoona. Member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Italian Club and Sportsmenıs Club, all of Cresson. Was an avid hunter and fly fisherman and made numerous fishing and hunting trips. He also enjoyed traveling and made two trips to Ireland with his wife and children. Friends received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Charles M. Kennedy Funeral Home, Cresson, where vigil for the deceased will be held.
