ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Gaynell I. Rickerson, 70, of St. Petersburg, Fla., died Monday, March 19, 2001, at her daughter's home under the care of Hospice of Florida. Born in Meadville June 1, 1920, she was a daughter of John B. and Julia Owen Smith. She moved to St. Petersburg from Penns Grove, N.J., in 1983, and was a retired deli manager for A & P Markets. She was of the Protestant faith and a member of Elks 2217 Auxiliary in Pinellas Park, Fla. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, crocheting and solving crossword puzzles. She had a large paper weight collection. Survivors include two daughters, Lori Gaye Ruberti of St. Petersburg, and Julie Beth Crispin of Pinellas Park; a son, David William Rickerson of Gulfport, Fla.; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a brother, John Donald Smith of Meadville. Arrangements are incomplete and under the direction of Sylvan Abbey Funeral Home, 2353 Sunset Point Road, Clearwater, Fla.

Ruth A. Shilling
Ruth A. Shilling, 90, formerly of Circle East, Woodland Trailer Park, and a resident of Wesbury United Methodist Retirement Community since January, died there Friday, March 23, 2001, following three months of failing health. She was born in Ashtabula, Ohio, July 6, 1910, a daughter of James and Hattie Curry Stainbrook. She was raised by her mother and stepfather, Niles Bartholomew. She married J. Hugh Shilling Jan. 1, 1929, and he preceded her in death Aug. 2, 1998. She was a homemaker until her children were grown, and then worked as a sales clerk for Sears for 17 years. She was a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ, a former member of its Friendly Sisters Class and a member of Elks Lodge 219 Auxiliary. She was an avid bridge player, enjoying the game with her husband for more than 30 years. Survivors include four sons, Richard Shilling and his wife, Mary, of Crossville, Tenn., John Shilling and his wife, Marilyn, and Dan Shilling and his wife, Sharon, all of Meadville, and Ron Shilling and his wife, Jeanie, of Charlotte, N.C.; 11 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Shirley Shilling; and a brother, Arthur Stainbrook. Calling hours will be Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Robert W. Ernest F. Scott Jr.
SAEGERTOWN - Ernest F. Scott Jr., 68, of 427 McGill St., P.O. Box 439, Saegertown, died Wednesday, March 21, 2001, at Meadville Medical Center. Born in Athens, N.Y., Aug. 24, 1932, he was a son of Ernest F. Sr. and Ceilia Scott. He married Shirley R. Dixon Saturday, June 12, 1954. He had been employed by Wickes Lumber Co. starting on Feb. 29, 1960, and retiring in 1991. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in the Korean Conflict. He attended Saegertown United Methodist Church, and was a member of Meadville Elks Lodge 219 and Venango American Legion. An avid sports fan, he especially enjoyed watching his grandchildren play basketball for Saegertown High School and Youngstown State University. He was a perfectionist when it came to working in his yard and flower garden. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Survivors, in addition to his wife of 46 years, include two sons, Steven E. Scott and his wife, Mary Jean, of Saegertown, and Brian P. Scott and his wife, Shana, of Port Angeles, Wash.; seven grandchildren, Amanda, Adrienne, Greg, Brian, Jamie, Devin and Megan; a great-grandchild; two sisters, Gloria Knight and her husband, Harry, and Marie Scott and her husband, Tony, both of Stuyvesant, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews. CONNEAUTVILLE - Roger L. Smith Sr., 45, of 9756 Oak St., Conneautville, died Thursday, March 22, 2001, at Meadville Medical Center after an extended illness. He was born in Erie Dec. 2, 1955, a son of Richard and Ruth Bush Smith. He married Mary Schilling in April 1975. He was a disabled laborer and was of the Protestant faith. Survivors, in addition to his wife of 25 years of Conneautville, include three sons, Jim Brace and his wife, Marlo, of Erie, and Richard Smith and Roger Smith Jr., both of Conneautville; two daughters, Rochelle Wheatley and her husband, Don, and Tina Casbohm and her husband, Ed, all of Conneautville; six grandchildren; seven brothers, John Smith, Miles Cross and Chuck Cross, all of Erie, Bruce Smith, Bob Smith and Jerry Smith, all of New Castle, and Francis Smith of Conneaut Lake; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son, John; a sister, Ruth Mosconi; and two brothers, Frank and Gordon Smith. Frank C. Hilton
Frank C. Hilton, 92, of 906 Grove St., Meadville, died Tuesday, March 20, 2001, at Meadville Medical Center from complications of pneumonia. Born at Mercy Hospital, Pittsburgh, Oct. 12, 1908, he was a son of Isaac and Canna Smith Hilton. He married Viola Rogers of Cambridge Springs March 21, 1945. She preceded him in death Dec. 13, 1995. He was a graduate of Wyomissing High School in Reading, where he excelled in football, basketball, baseball and boxing, was captain of his high school basketball team and president of his class. A graduate of Springfield College, Springfield, Mass., with a bachelor of science in health and physical education and political science, he swam for the college swim team and was president of the student government. Upon graduation, he coached swimming at Reading High School, where they won their first state swimming championship under his tutelage. He served as a veteran of World War II in the U.S. Army and was discharged as a captain. His life interests included many civic, social, veteran and political affairs, and he had a tremendous empathy for people and their issues. He served as state chairman of the Young Republicans of Pennsylvania from 1936 to 1940. He represented Pennsylvania as a delegate at the national Republican convention in 1940 and 1948. From 1952 to 1954 he served as the chairman of the Veterans Division of the Republican National Committee for the Eisenhower Campaign. He is the only Pennsylvanian to have served in a state cabinet position as secretary of property and supplies, under two different administrations; first under Gov. John Fine in 1953, followed by Gov. Milton Shapp in 1971. He was awarded the Pennsylvania Gold Citizens Medal for outstanding service by Govs. Fine and Shapp in 1952 and 1972 respectively. Additionally, he served as deputy secretary of general services, during the Eisenhower administration, from 1956 to 1958. Locally, he served as Meadville's first area industrial commissioner (MAIC), and was responsible for attracting key industrial growth to Crawford County from 1958 to 1962. He was president of Hilton Brothers Industrial Chemical Sales Brokerage based in Meadville. In 1973, he was awarded a Certificate of Merit by then-president Chester McNerney of Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, for distinguished service to the university. An active member of Christ Episcopal Church, he served on the church vestry. He served on the Board of Trustees for the former Spencer Hospital. He was also a former member of the Meadville Country Club. He was a 32nd degree Mason, as a life member of Lodge 307, Womelsdorf. He was a member of the American Legion, and Veterans of Foreign Wars. As a member of the VFW, he first served as state commander in 1947, and was unanimously elected national commander-in-chief of the VFW in 1951. During his tenure as national commander-in-chief, he traveled to every state of the union, and was fortunate to have private meetings and to present awards to several dignitaries: Harry Truman, Dwight Eisenhower, Douglas MacArthur, Omar Bradley, Bob Hope, Dick Nixon, John Kennedy and Howard Hughes. He was a devoted husband, beloved father and a trusted friend to all that knew him. Survivors include a daughter, Gay S. Hilton of Meadville; a son, Frank C. Hilton Jr. and his wife, Vickie, of Lancaster; a granddaughter, Jacqueline Elizabeth Hilton; a grandson, Darian Charles Hilton; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles Russell Hilton and Raymond Leslie Hilton. There will be a private family service at Christ Episcopal Church Friday morning. A formal memorial service for friends and family of him and his wife, Viola Hilton, will be Saturday, May 19 at 11 a.m. at Christ Episcopal Church. Cremation is under the direction of Hatheway-Tedesco Funeral Home and Crematory, 614 Baldwin St., Meadville. Michael Marino
NEW CASTLE - Michael Marino, 74, of Neshannock Hills, New Castle, died Tuesday, March 20, 2001, at Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh. Born in New Castle Sept. 10, 1926, he was a son of Filomeno and Rose Servedio Marino. He married Genevieve R. Castele 51 years ago. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving as a paratrooper with the 11th Airborne in the Pacific Campaign. He was president and owner of both West Penn Plastic Inc. and M. Marino Electric. He was a member of St. Vitus Church, New Castle. Survivors, in addition to his wife of 51 years, include a daughter, Lucyndia Marino of New Castle; and two brothers, J. Miles O. (Jake) Moore Sr.
CAMBRIDGE SPRINGS - Miles O. (Jake) Moore Sr., 83, formerly of Greenwood Township and a resident of Beverly Healthcare, Cambridge Springs, died Wednesday, March 21, 2001, at his residence. He was born in Meadville Dec. 11, 1917, a son of the Rev. Roy and Gladys Childs Moore. He married Lois Griffin March 26, 1956. A World War II U.S. Army veteran, he worked in Jamestown, N.Y. as a machinist. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Meadville, and a former member of the Meadville Eagles and the Italian Civic Club in Meadville. He loved fishing. Survivors, in addition to his wife of 44 years, include two sons, Miles Moore Jr. and his wife, Colleen, of Cochranton, and Arthur Moore and his wife, Bettina, of Meadville; a daughter, Caroline Moore of Pendelton, Ore.; and two grandchildren, Nicole and Joseph. Helen Mathews
CAMBRIDGE SPRINGS - Helen Mathews, 79, of 23364 McClellan St., Cambridge Springs, died Tuesday, March 20, 2001, at Meadville Medical Center following a year-long struggle with cancer. Born in Washington Township, Erie County, May 1, 1921, she was a daughter of Oscar and Louwayne Gage Duncan. Her first husband, Edward F. Kwiatkowski, whom she married July 28, 1945, preceded her in death. She subsequently married William E. (Bunk) Mathews May 17, 1955. A 1940 graduate of Erie Business College, she worked for C.A. Curtz from 1938 until 1946. She, along with her husband, owned and operated Conneautee Farm in Venango Township, until the present. A member of Washington Valley Christian Church, she also was a member of Cambridge Springs Heritage Society and a founding member of Cambridge Area Volunteer Ambulance Service. She is remembered by her family and friends for her great strength, labor, perseverance, encouragement and charity. Survivors, in addition to her husband of 46 years, include three sons, Victor E. Kwiatkowski and his wife, Joyce, of Edinboro, Vernon E. Kwiatkowski of Mt. Pleasant, Mich., and Vincent C. Kwiatkowski and his wife, Karen, of Edinboro; eight grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter. William Lawrence Reagle
William Lawrence Reagle, 32, of 27468 Guys Mills Road, Meadville, died Tuesday, March 20, 2001, at Meadville Medical Center, following a motorcycle accident. Born in Titusville Nov. 5, 1968, he was a son of John and Loretta Hinkle Reagle. He married Barbara J. Bernoski Sept. 3, 1994. A 1987 graduate of Maplewood Junior-Senior High School, he was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving for five years. He was employed by the State Correctional Institution in Albion for more than seven years, where he held the rank of lieutenant. He also was a member of the FERT team at the correctional facility. A loving husband and father, he attended Blooming Valley United Methodist Church. He was an avid motorcycle rider and was a member of the V-Max Owners Association. His hobbies included NASCAR and baseball, and he had a love for the outdoors. He was an organ donor. In his earlier years he was a Boy Scout. Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son, Alexander John Reagle and a daughter Kristen Renee Reagle, both at home; his mother and stepfather, Loretta Underhill and her husband, David M., of Centerville; a sister, Autumn Frazier and her husband, Tracy, of Centerville; two brothers, Ryan Underhill and his wife, Mandee, of Enterprise, and Theo Underhill of Centerville; three nieces; a nephew; uncles, aunts and cousins. Linda Feleppa Eppehimer, 52, of 16016 Bailey Road, Meadville, died Tuesday, March 20, 2001, at home. Born in Meadville Jan. 18, 1949, she was a daughter of Vincent and Carmella Bengivenga Feleppa. She married Blaine Eppehimer July 15, 1994. She was previously married to James Clark. A 1966 graduate of Meadville High School, she was also a 1978 graduate of Erie Barber School. She owned and operated Linda's Barber Shop in Vernon Township from 1992 to 2000. She faced her breast cancer with amazing strength and bravery. She was the cornerstone of her family, and her love of life will be engraved in the memories of her family and friends forever. She was affiliated with St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church. Her hobbies included cooking and traveling, and she cherished the time she spent with her family, especially her grandchildren. Survivors, in addition to her husband, include five children, Hollie DeWalt and her husband, Patrick, of Cochranton, Shane P. Erma Langworthy Titus Carpenter
GUYS MILLS - Erma Langworthy Titus Carpenter, 88, of 10435 Fauncetown Road, Guys Mills, died Monday, March 19, 2001, at HealthSouth Rehabilitation of Erie following a short illness. Born in Tryonville April 5, 1912, she was a daughter of Walter and Fay Whitman Langworthy. She was married to Earl Titus, who died in December 1965. She later married Lloyd Carpenter, who died in December 1998. She was former employed at Pizza Villa, Colonel Drake Hotel and Titusville Area Hospital. She formerly attended Evangelical United Brethren Church of Tryonville and Chapmanville Community Church. She enjoyed reading, cooking, baking and canning, and was known at Chapmanville Volunteer Fire Department as "the pickle lady." She also enjoyed gardening, houseplants, feeding the birds, and raising beagles and fox hounds. Survivors include nine children, Lloyd Titus and his wife, Shirley, of Tryonville, Evelyn McIver and her husband, Pete, of Titusville, James Titus and his wife, Jane, of Titusville, Lois Ellsmore of Faribault, Minn., Edward Titus and his wife, Carina, of Titusville, William Titus and his wife, Becky, of Saegertown, Mary Loney of Falconer, N.Y., Alice Wheatall of Indiana, Pa., and Bruce Carpenter and his wife, Bev, of Erie; 32 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and two nieces. Thomas Watters Agnew
DUNEDIN, Fla. - Thomas Watters Agnew, 81, of 1510 San Roy Drive, Dunedin, Fla., died Sunday, March 11, 2001, at Mease Hospital, Dunedin. He was born in Belfast, Ireland, Sept. 12, 1919, a son of William B. and Annie McKay Agnew. He came to the United States as a boy, and moved to Florida from Harmonsburg in 1957. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he worked as a bank examiner for the U.S. Treasury Department in Florida. He also did income tax preparations and continued doing so throughout his retirement years, even recently. In his earlier years, he worked at the former Farmers National Bank in Conneautville. He was of the Presbyterian faith and was a member of Harmonsburg Presbyterian Church. He was also a member of Egypt Temple Shrine of Tampa, Fla., and was a Mason. He enjoyed sports and loved spending time with his family. Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth; a daughter, Kathleen Whiteman and her husband, Jerry, of San Francisco, Calif.; a sister, Olive Mae Basehore of Cambridge Springs; a brother, Robert W. Agnew and his wife, Jennie, of Linesville; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Albert, John and Harold Agnew. There was a private funeral Thursday. Burial was in Sylvan Abbey Memorial Gardens, Clearwater, Fla.

Ralph W. Pletcher
Ralph W. Pletcher, 84, of 729 Brawley Ave., Meadville, died Monday, March 19, 2001, at Wesbury United Methodist Retirement Community. He was born at Conneaut Lake Aug. 19, 1916, a son of John F. and Susan Bouse Pletcher. He married Mabel Axtell March 31, 1940. He had retired as a tool maker with Talon Inc. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church and the tool makers union at Talon. He played cornet in the Cochranton band and enjoyed gardening and bowling. Survivors, in addition to his wife of 50 years of Meadville, include several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Alberta Ferguson; and a brother, Robert Pletcher. COCHRANTON - Ellis LaVerne Dille, 90, of 7626 Sugar Lake Road, Cochranton, died Monday, March 19, 2001, at Meadville Medical Center. He was born in Jackson Township, Venango County, June 11, 1910, a son of Curt and Lois Wheeling Dille. He married Ruth DuPont, who preceded him in death Nov. 19, 1997. He was a farmer and was last employed in maintenance at Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. Survivors include a daughter, Karen Moore and her husband, John, of Carlton; a son, Raymond Dille and his wife, Sandra, of Meadville; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Mona Jean Dille; three sisters, Emma, Mable and Doris; and five brothers, Guy, Frank, Glenn, Dalton and Harold Dille. HARRISVILLE - Gene D. Frampton, 72, of Eau Claire Road, Harrisville, died Monday, March 19, 2001, at United Community Hospital, Pine Township, Mercer County. Born in Harrisville Jan. 20, 1929, he was a son of Vinter V. and Harriet Stillwagon Frampton. He married Correne A. McCandless Oct. 2, 1954. A graduate of Harrisville High School, he worked as an estimator at C and J Plastics of Meadville, retiring in 1995. He was formerly employed as an engineer at General Electric of Grove City. He was a U.S. Army veteran. A member of Harrisville United Methodist Church, he was also a member of Cedar Masonic Lodge 800 of Grove City, New Castle Consistory and Kentucky Order of the Colonel in Kentucky. Survivors, in addition to his wife of 46 years, include two sons, Daniel B. Frampton and Barry L. Frampton, both of Harrisville; eight grandchildren; three sisters, Louise Bell and her husband, Donald, of Harrisville, and Sonja Mase and her husband, Ernest, and Susan Frampton, all of Frankfort, Ky.; and five brothers, Charles, Jerry, Larry and Samuel Frampton, all of Harrisville, and Scott Frampton of Grove City. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Constance A. Frampton; a son, Gene David Frampton; two grandsons; a sister; and five brothers. Calling hours are today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Jamison Funeral Home, 117 N. Main St., Harrisville. The funeral will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home, with the Rev. Willard S. Morse of Harrisville United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Prairie Cemetery, Harrisville. Ralph L. Bidwell
WORCESTER, N.Y. - Ralph L. Bidwell, 84, of Worcester, N.Y., died Tuesday, March 6, 2001, at Eden Park Healthcare Center in Cobleskill, N.Y. Born in Erie July 12, 1916, he was a son of Lyle and Helen Tinker Bidwell. He married Frances Tracy June 14, 1941. She preceded him in death Jan. 29, 1995. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and attained the rank of corporal. He served with the 1201st Service Command Unit in the European Theater and was a recipient of the Purple Heart. In 1971, he moved to South Worcester from Hicksville, N.Y. He was employed with the U.S. government from 1945 to 1971 as a turret artillery repairman in Bellmore, N.Y. He also worked for Davenport Central School District as a school bus driver for 10 years, retiring in 1981. He was a member of the American Legion in Hicksville, the Disabled American Veterans and the Oneonta (N.Y.) Bowling League for many years. Survivors include a son, Joseph Bidwell of Cape Girardeau, Mo.; two grandchildren, John L. Bidwell and Christine Bidwell; and several cousins. He was preceded in death by a son, John Bidwell, in 1992; and a sister-in-law, Marie Tracy. Calling hours took place in E.J. Skinner Co. Funeral Chapel in Worcester. The funeral was there with the Rev. Joyce Allen, pastor of Worcester United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Worcester, later in the spring. The family suggests memorials be made to Eden Park Healthcare Center, 25 Parkway Drive, Cobleskill, N.Y. 12034. Arrangements are under the direction of E.J. Skinner Co., 115 Main St., Worcester.

COCHRANTON - Ellis Dille, 90, of 7626 Sugar Lake Road, Cochranton, died Monday, March 19, 2001, at Meadville Medical Center. Calling hours will be Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Ronald Dickson Funeral Home, 123 S. Franklin St., Cochranton. The funeral will be Thursday at a time to be announced.

Thomas W. Egger
SANDY LAKE - Thomas W. Egger, 55, of 1179 Hendersonville Road, Sandy Lake, died Sunday, March 18, 2001, at UPMC Horizon, Greenville, after an extended illness. Born in Grove City Nov. 24, 1945, he was a son of Andrew Thomas and Dorothey Helen Adams Egger. He married Nancy G. Boitnott Feb. 19, 1965. He was a 1963 graduate of Lakeview High School. He had worked for more than 17 years at the Sharon Transformer division of Westinghouse Electric Co. He retired from the Franklin district office of Pennsylvania Department of Transportation in 1998 after 10 years. He was a member of Vincent United Methodist Church, Jackson Center, where he was very active in helping with anything needed at the church. He was also a member of Lake Masonic Lodge 434, Sandy Lake. An avid hunter, he loved the outdoors and picking wild berries. He enjoyed gardening and spending time with his children and grandchildren. Survivors, in addition to his wife of 36 years, include a daughter, Molly Frances Egger of Sandy Lake; two sons, William T. Egger and his wife, Karen, of Clarks Mills, and Ernest J. Egger and his wife, Amy, of Sandy Lake; four grandchildren, Darren Thomas Egger, Alaina Lee Egger, Thomas Allen Egger and Joseph Patrick Egger; three sisters, Cheryl Egger Carlson and her husband, Robert E., of Jackson Center, Barbara Wagner and her husband, David, of Hermitage, and Carolyn Lewis and her husband, Charles, of Jackson Center; and six brothers, James C. Jaskowak, George A. Egger, Jack P. Egger, Marvin C. Gatewood, Willie N. Gatewood, all of Jackson Center, and David H. Gatewood of Mercer. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his stepfather, D.C. Gatewood. Calling hours will be Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Scott A. Black Funeral Home, 99 Franklin St., Stoneboro, with a Masonic funeral service at 9 p.m. The funeral will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Jackson Center Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Robert M. Getschman of Vincent United Methodist Church and the Rev. Terry L. Greenlee of Jackson Center Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Jackson Center.

Alice M. Brown
SAEGERTOWN - Alice M. Brown, 99, a resident of Crawford County Care Center, Saegertown, and formerly of Ravine Street, Meadville, died Monday, March 12, 2001, at Crawford County Care Center. Born in Greenville Nov. 8, 1901, she was a daughter of James W. and Pearl Case Henry. She married Carl C. Brown in 1922. He preceded her in death. She came to Meadville in 1930 and was a homemaker. She was a member of Emmanuel United Church of Christ, Neason Hill Women's Club and the Navy Mothers Club. Survivors include a son, Carl (Lew) Brown of Turnersville, N.J.; a daughter, Pearl Saul and her husband, Donald, of Charlotte, N.C.; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a son, R. Duane Brown. Calling hours will be Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Roofner-Collins Funeral Home Inc., 544 Chestnut St., Meadville. The funeral and committal service will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home, with the Rev. Timothy Solomon of Emmanuel United Church of Christ officiating.
