Edward W. FOOR, 92, of 112 Saints Rd., Bedford, formerly of Hopewell,
died Saturday, April 1, 2000, at 10:05 p.m., at Donahue Manor Nursing
Home in Bedford, following an extended illness. Born Nov. 14, 1907, in
Broad Top Township, Bedford County, he was the son of the late Harry
Willard and Della (Lahman) Foor. He was united in marriage to Edna B.
Williams May 19, 1951, in Defiance. She preceded him in death
Feb.20,1989. Surviving are the following children and stepson: Charles
E. Foor, Buffalo, N.Y.; William R. Foor, Six Mile Run; Mrs. Robert
(Sidney) Oaks, Seagertown; Mrs. Louis (Mary Catherine) Steele and James
L. Foor, both of Hopewell; Mrs. John (Sandra) Foore, Defiance; Mrs.
William (Nancy) Axon, Six Mile Run; Mrs. Stanley (Patricia) Schaffern,
Bedford; and Milford Weaver Buffalo, N.Y. There are 42 grandchildren, 47
great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. One brother, George
Foor of Shirleysburg, survives. Two sons, two daughters, one
granddaughter, and one great-granddaughter preceded him in death, along
with two sisters, Myrtle Wright and Julie Meshyock, and a brother Lloyd
Foor. Mr. Foor was of the Protestant faith. He was a coal miner in the
Broad Top area for 47 years and retired in 1972. Funeral services will
be held Wednesday, April 5, at 1 p.m., at the D. Ronald Long Funeral
Chapel, Saxton,. with the Pastor Dan Hammal officiating. Interment will
be made in the Duvall Cemetery, Six Mile Run. Friends may call at the

Robert "Jack" ISENBERG, 80, of 1130 Warm Springs Ave., Huntingdon, died
Sunday, April 2, 2000, at 12:05 a.m., at J.C. Blair Memorial Born Oct.
18, 1919 in Monessen, he was th son of the late James and Lizzie
(Shetrom) Isenberg. He was united in marriage to Charlotte Foster July
13, 1942, in Lake Charles, La. Mrs. Isenberg survives at their
Huntingdon residence. One daughter, Mrs. James (Sue Ellen) Ciccarelli of
Lafayette, Ind., survives. There are two granddaughters. The last
surviving member of his immediate family, Mr. Isenberg was preceded in
death by nine brothers and sisters. He was a member of the First United
Methodist Church, Huntingdon. He was a member of the Mount Moriah Lodge
No. 300, F&AM of Pennsylvania; Jaffa Temple, Altoona; Huntingdon County
Shrine Club, Valley of Altoona Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite; Tall
Cedars of Lebanon; Forty and Eight; Benevolent and Protective Order of
Elks Lodge No. 976; Frank P. Hommon American Legion Post No. 24,
Huntingdon; and United Commercial Travelers. Mr. Isenberg was formerly
employed at J.C. Blair Co., predecessor of Mead School and Office
Products; Huntingdon Silk Mill; REA, predecessor of Valley Rural
Electric Cooperative, Inc.; and retired from Owens Corning Fiberglas in
1981, after 31 years of service. He was educated in the Monessen public
schools, where he graduated with the class of 1939. During World War II,
he served in the U.S. Army. He had been a resident of Huntingdon County
since 1945 and had lived at his current residence since 1950. A funeral
service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 5, at the John B. Brown
Funeral Home, Inc., 417 Washington St., Huntingdon, with the Rev. Doyle
H. Klinger Jr. officiating. Interment will be made in the Huntingdon
Memorial Gardens, Walker Township, Huntingdon. Friends may call at the
funeral home Tuesday, April 4, after 7 p.m., and from 9 a.m. until the
hour of the service on Wednesday.
Ruth W. MANSPEAKER, 94, of Morrisons Cove Home, Martinsburg, formerly of
Saxton, R.D., died Monday, April 3, 2000, at 5:45 p.m., at the Morrisons
Cove Home. She had been in failing health for the past two years. Born
Feb. 23, 1906, in Saxton, R.D., she was the daughter of the late Joseph
and Maude (Ritchey) Wiles. She was united in marriage to Lester P.
Manspeaker May 14. 1924, in Virginia. He preceded her in death July 25,
1981. Surviving are three children; Donna Ritchey, Saxton, R.D.; Mrs.
Robert (Margaret) Carbaugh, Hopewell, R.D.; and Joseph Manspeaker,
Saxton, R.D. Two foster sons also survive: Thomas Donelson, Blairsville;
and Harvey Reed, El Paso, Texas. There are ten grandchildren, 21
great-grandchildren and nine great-great- grandchildren. Two sisters and
one brother survive: Mary Stapleton, Saxton, R.D.; Martha Hinisch,
Martinsburg; and Joseph Wiles Jr., Saxton, R.D. Two sisters and one
brother preceded her in death: Katherine Morris Reighard, Betty Reighard
and James Wiles. Mrs. Manspeaker was a life member of the Raven Run
Church of the Brethren, where she was active in the Willing Workers
Class. During her life she was employed by Owens Corning Fiberglas,
Huntingdon; Blue Mountain Cannery, Martinsburg; and Quality
Manufacturing, Saxton. She enjoyed planting flowers and was an avid
gardener. Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 6, at 11 a.m.,
at the Raven Run Church of the Brethren, with Pastor Dan Hammal
officiating. Interment will be made in St. Luke's Cemetery, Saxton, R.D.
Friends may call at the D. Ronald Long Funeral Chapel Wednesday from 7
until 9 p.m. and Thursday from 10 a.m. until the hour of the service at

The Rev. Hal R. ROTRUCK, 45, of 2340 Miller Ave., Huntingdon, died
Tuesday, April 4, 2000, at 8 a.m., at his home. Born Aug. 24, 1954, in
Keyser, W.Va., he was the son of the late Durus Franklin Rotruck and
Mary Helen (Llewellyn) Rotruck, who survives at Westernport, Md. He was
united in marriage to Kathy A. Kooken July 31, 1976. She survives at
home. Three children, Anna Elizabeth Rotruck, Shelley Dawn Rotruck and
Joshua Micah Rotruck, all at home, survive. One sister and two brothers
also survive: Mrs. John (Jeani) Tiano, Clarksburg, W.Va.; Mark Rotruck,
Selbyville, Md.; and Chris Rotruck, Keyser, W.Va. The Rev. Rotruck was
currently serving as the pastor of the Christian and Missionary Alliance
Church in Huntingdon. He had also served as pastor of the Christian and
Missionary Alliance Church, Bedford; First United Methodist Church and
Moore United Methodist Church in Parsons, W.Va.; and the Bloomington
United Methodist Charge in Bloomington, Md. A graduate of Keyser High
School in Keyser, W.Va., he also graduated from Potomac State College in
Keyser; Southeastern College in Lakeland, Fla.; and Asbury Theological
Seminary, Wilmore, Ken. Funeral services will be held Friday, April 7,
at 11 a.m., at the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church, 1019 Moore
St., Huntingdon, with Pastor Palmer L. Zerbe officiating. Interment
services will be held Saturday, April 8, at 1 p.m., at the Potomac
Memorial Gardens in Keyser, W.Va. The family will receive friends in the

Joseph J. CLARK, Jr. 34, of P.O. Box 256, Cherry St. Rockhill Furnace,
died unexpectedly early Friday morning, April 7, 2000, at the J.C. Blair
Memorial Hospital, Huntingdon. Born July 14, 1965, in Philadelphia, he
is survived by his father and stepmother, Joseph and Beverly Clark, of
New York state and by his mother and stepfather, Donald and Mary (Wood)
Litka, of HCR Orbisonia. He was united in marriage to Margaret (Bilger)
Winter, Nov. 22, 1997. She survives along with four stepchildren: Edwin
Win ter, Three Springs; Wendy Henry, Hustontown; Stacy Winter and Brian
Winter both of Orbisonia. He is also survived by two granddaughter, four
nieces and three nephews. Also surviving are one brother, Shawn Clark of
Philadelphia and two sisters, Robin Brazell of Philadelphia and Shannon
Litka of Orbisonia. He was of the Chatholic faith. Mr. Clark attended
George Washington High School in Philadelphia. He was a U.S. Army
veteran, serving in both Desert Shield and Desert Storm. He was employed
the last two years by K.W. Reese, Inc. of Mercersburg. Funeral services
will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, April 10, at the Robert D. Heath Funeral
Home, Mount Union. Interment will be made in the Evans Cemetery,

Beatrice C. (Brumbaugh) JESSELL, 91, formerly of 416 13th St.,
Huntingdon and recently of The Oaks, Westminster Woods, 360 Westminster
Drive, Huntingdon, died Friday, April 7, 2000 at 3:45 a.m. Born in
Saxton Feb. 26, 1909, she was the daughter of the late Daniel and
Elizabeth (Gutheridge) Brumbaugh. She was united in marriage to Robert
A. Jessell, February 25, 1933, in the home of the Rev. S. I. Brumbaugh
who performed the service. Mr. Jessell preceded her in death in Nov. 26,
1938. She is survived by one son, Robert Allen Jessell and one daughter,
Mrs. Vriginia J. Mansberger both of Huntingdon. Mrs. Jessell is also
survived by six grandchildren, seven great- grandchildren and one
step-great- granddaughter. One daughter, Doris Jessell, seven brothers
and three sisters preceded her in death. She was a member of the
Stonerstown Church of the Brethren, Saxton were she was a member of the
Delta Class and served as its secretary. She also was a member of the
Rebekkah Lodge in Huntingdon. Mrs. Jessell attended the Saxton Area
public schools. During her life she worked for the Huntingdon Silk Mill;
as a dis- patcher for Grove's Taxi Service; and as a printer for J.C.
Blair Com- pany and J.S. Rogers Printing Shops from which she retired in
1983. She enjoyed sewing, knitting and embroidery and was an avid bingo
player. Funeral services will be held at the John B. Brown Funeral Home,
Monday, April 10, 2000 at 11 a.m., with the Rev. David L. Dearing

Geraldine M. "Pood" SIMPSON, 74, of P.O. Box 83, Huntingdon, died
Thursday, April 6, 2000, at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, Huntingdon.
She had been in failing health for the past three years. Mrs. Simpson
was born on March 22, 1926 in Smithfield and was the daughter of the
late Fred and Barbara (Nolan) Morningstar. She was united in marriage to
Walter W. Simpson on Dec. 16, 1945. Mr. Simpson survives at their home.
She is survived by four daughters; Barbara Bergeron, Paradis, La., M.
Sharon McConaughey, Huntingdon; Donna Strait, R.D. 1 Huntingdon; Shirley
Zerbe Simpson, Huntingdon R.D. 2. Also surviving are three sons, Robert
K. Simpson, Williamsburg, Victor Simpson, Huntingdon, R. D. I and Walter
Simpson Jr. Huntingdon, R.D. 3. Also surviving are 17 grandchildren and
7 great-grandchildren. One grandson preceded her in death. Mrs. Simpson
is also survived by one sister, Ruth Kelly of Huntingdon and three
brothers, Ralph Morningstar, and Clarence Morningstar, both of
Huntingdon and Clint Morningstar of Virginia. She was preceded in death
by nine brothers and sisters. She was of the Methodist faith. She was
employed by the Huntingdon Silk Mill and Gerbo Shoe and later its
successor U.S. Sports. She retired from U.S. Sports in 1996. She was
educated in the Smithfield and Huntingdon area schools. In her free time
she enjoyed working with search-word books. A graveside funeral service
will be held at Memorial Gardens, Huntingdon on Monday, April 10, 2000
at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Richard J. Harter officiating. Family and

Cloyd Bruce HICKS Sr. 76, of P.O. Box 174, 130 Parson's Road, Newton
Hamilton, died at 7:40 p.m., Thursday, April 6, 2000, at the Hershey
Medical Center, Hershey. He died following a serious illness. Born May
25, 1923, in Allenport, Mount Union, he was the son of Clarence and
Martha (Smith) Hicks. He was united in marriage to the former Jean M.
Smith on Oct. 13, 1945. She preceded him in death on May 8, 1989. He
married Betty (Hoover) Miller on March 15, 1991, in the Presbyterian
Church, Colonial Park, Winchester, Va. She survives at their home. He is
survived by three children; Mrs. Trudy Book, Newton Hamilton; Jim E.
Hicks of R.D. 1, Mount Union and Cloyd Bruce Hicks Jr. of Newton
Hamilton. Also surviving are two stepchildren; C. Sam Miller of
Alexandria and Carol Jean Kann of New Cumberland. There are seven
grandchildren 4 step-grandchildren one great- grandson and a number of
nieces and nephews. Also surviving are two sisters; Zola Hooper of
Woodland Retirement Center, Orbisonia and Mary Wiser of Shirley Home,
Shirleysburg. He was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Newton Hamilton where
he served as a trustee. He graduated from Mount Union High School in
1942. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 1987 after 30 years of
service and was postmaster at the Newton Hamilton Post Office. Prior to
that he was employed for over 20 years at the Harbison-Walker
Refractories in Mount Union, having been one of the last employees to
utilize the 1000 steps to go to and from work. He served with the United
States Air force during World War 11, serving with the 731st Bombardment
Squadron and the 452nd Bombardment Group. He flew 21 missions over
Germany in B- I 7s He was honorably discharged with the rank of Staff
Sergeant and received the Distinquished Flying Cross with Oak Leaf
Cluster, the Air Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters and the Purple Heart
with Leaf Cluster. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Monday,
April 10, 2000, at the Robert D. Heath Funeral Home in Mount Union, with
the Rev. Donald Peliman officiating. Interment will be in the Newton
Hamilton Memorial Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Sunday,

George M. NORRIS, 66, of Box 127, Huntingdon, R.D. 3, died at 5:30 a.m.
Friday, April 7, 2000, at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, Huntingdon. Born
May 29, 1933, in Penn Township, he was a son of the late Carl W. and Amy
Ruth (Norris) Norris. He married Mary E. Hearn, April 30, 1955, at the,
Hawn's Bridge Chapel by the Rev. Neil Rodgers. Mrs. Norris survives at
home. Also surviving are three children: Georgana Marie Norris, Hesston,
R.D. 1; Ira Hank Norris, Huntingdon, R.D. 3; and Carol Ann Norris,
Hesston, R.D. 1; two granddaughters and one great-grandson. One brother,
Harold Norris, Huntingdon, R.D. 3 and two sisters, Elizabeth McKinney,
Huntingdon, R.D.1 and Martha Foore, Hopewell, R.D. 2, also survive. One
brother, Lester Norris and two sisters, Beulah Grubb and Ruth Norris,
preceded him in death. Mr. Norris was of the Protestant faith. He was a
member of the Independent Bass Master's Club. He was a veteran of the
U.S. Army where he earned the rank of corporal. He served in the Korean
Conflict as a cannoneer with Battery "C" of the 52nd Field Artillery
Battalion. During his lifetime he had been employed by New Holland in
Belleville for 34 years. He retired from New Holland in 1991 as a welder
and quality control inspector. He was an avid fisherman and especially
enjoyed Raystown Lake. Funeral services will be held at 2 pm. Monday
April 10, at the Robrt E. Peters Funeral Home, Huntingdon. Interment
will be in the Anderson Cemetery, Hesston R.D. 1. Friends may call at
the funeral home after 7 p.m. Sunday and from 9 a.m. until the hour of

Charles H. KEYS, 87, of East Pennsboro Township, Camp Hill, died
Saturday, April 1, 2000, at ManorCare in Camp Hill. He is survived by
his, wife, the former Esther V. Wise in Camp Hill, and a stepdaughter:
Doris L. Baumgardner of Saxton. One step-grandchild, one
step-great-grandchild and one step-great-great-grandchild survive. Also
surviving is a sister, Sara M. Slack of Progress. Mr. Keys was a former
member of the Mt. Laurel Church of God. He was also a member of the
Pennsylvania Council of Deliberation; Euclid Lodge No. 698 F&AM;
Scottish Rite; Zembo Temple; Mechanicsburg Sportsmen's Club; Overview
Fish and Boat Club; Harrisburg Consistory; and Imperial Council Nobles
of the Mystic Shrine. He retired from the Harrisburg State Hospital.
Interment was made in the Mt. Laurel Cemetery.
Funeral services will be held tomorrow for noted Pennsylvania newspaper
publisher William K. ULERICH who had strong ties to Huntingdon. Mr.
Ulerich, "W.K.", as he was known, died Friday, April 7, 2000, at the age
of 89. He was publisher of the Clearfield Progress and started his
career at The Daily News in Huntingdon as a reporter. He and his family
had a cottage at the old Raystown Lake and he spent summers here. He had
been in failing health for a number of years and died of a massive heart
attack. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Trinity
United Methodist Church, Clearfield. Burial will be in Unity Cemetery,
Latrobe. Mr. Ulerich was a business partner of the late John Biddle, and
together they invested in newspapers, radio stations and other ventures.
Mr. Ulerich contributed annually to the Joseph F. Biddle Scholarship
Fund, founded by The Daily News, to assist a young person pursuing a
career in journalism. He was born April 18, 1910, a son of William
Wesley and Anna Susan (Keener) Ulerich. On Aug. 23, 1950, he married
Aletha Jones Mattern, who preceded in death March 26,1996. He was a 1931
graduate of Penn State, where he majored in journalism, and was editor
of The Collegian in his senior year. He began his career in 1931 as a
reporter for The Daily News of Huntingdon, and then became assistant
editor of the weekly State College Times, which he helped convert to a
daily. He was the Centre Daily Times first editor and associate
publisher, remaining until 1945 when he became part owner of The
Progress in Clearfield. From 1933 to 1945, he was an instructor and
assistant professor of journalism at Penn State. He was a member of the
Penn State Board of Trustees from 1951 to 1957 and from 1963 to 1985 and
served as president of the board. He also served on the Penn State
Alumni Council for many years and was president of the national Penn
State Alumni Association. Mr. Ulerich was active in many Clearfield
organizations including a director of the Clearfield Hospital, the
Clearfield Chamber of Commerce, County National Bank board of directors,
one of the original founders of the Clearfield Swimming Pool
Association, an Eagle Scout and strong supporter of scouting, a school
director, and a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church. He
received many awards over his lifetime, including in 1969 the Penn State
Distinguished Alumnus Award and the Lion's Paw Medal and was
Clearfield's "Man of the Century." He is survived by a daughter, Dr.
Constance Ulerich Meaney of Oakland, Calif.; and a son, J. Richard
Mattern 11 of Clearfield. There are two grandsons.
William N. STEELE, 80, HCR 75, Shade Gap, died at 8:55 a.m. Sunday,
April 9, 2000 at the Fulton County Medical Center, McConnellsburg. Born
February 2, 1920 at Breezewood, he was a son of the late Albert and
Lilly (Colledge) Steele. He was married to Ida A. Everets on January 19,
1958 at Hagerstown. She survives at their home. Surviving are the
following step-children: Johnnie D. Clugston, St. Thomas; Lawrence J.
'Jr.' Clugston, Chambersburg; Dennis E. 'Earl' Clugston, York and
Patricia A. Mills, Sagamore Hills, OH; eight step-grandchildren; nine
step-great-grandchildren and a brother, James Steele, Shelby Twp., MI.
He was a member of the Hustontown Church of God and in his early years
was a member of the Breezewood United Methodist Church. During his life
he was a self-employed truck driver. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army
serving from 1941 to 1946. Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m.
Wednesday, April 12 at the M.R. Brown Funeral Home, Hustontown. Rev.
John Warner officiated. Burial was made at Union Cemetery. The Fulton
Honor Guard conducted a military funeral at the graveside on Wednesday.
Chauncey HERZBERG Jr., 70, of P.O. Box 253, Three Springs, died
Saturday, April 8, 2000, at Centre Community Hospital, State College,
following an extended illness. Born March 17, 1930, in Mankato, Minn.,
he married Dawn L. McGerrow of Honolulu, Hawaii, Oct. 4, 1951. Mrs.
Herzberg survives at home, along with three children: Victoria L.
Herzberg, Bloomfield, N.J.; Valerie H. Ford, Saltillo; and Kurt V.
Herzberg, Blairs Mills. There are three grandchildren. One sister, Jean
M. Franks of Waseca, Minn., survives. A businessman in Mount Union for
the past 32 years, Mr. Herzberg owned and operated Industrial Hardwood,
Inc., at the time of his death. He had been a member of several area
service and fraternal organizations, including the Fraternal Order of
Masons and the Lions Club, in addition to several professional
organizations. He was a past member of the Southern Huntingdon County
School Board, Spring Creek Joint Sewer Authority and the Huntingdon
County Housing Authority. A lifelong Lutheran, he had been a council
member of St. Luke Lutheran Church, Mount Union, and most recently
attended the Cassville Lutheran Church. Mr. Herzberg served in the U.S.
Army from 1948 until 1952. Following that, he earned degrees from the
George Washington University and the University of Maryland. He was a
certified public accountant in Maryland. A memorial service will be held
at St. Luke Lutheran Church, Market and Jefferson streets, Mount Union,
at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 15. Friends will be received following the
memorial service. Interment will be made at the convenience of the
family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the
National Hardwood Lumber Association (NULA), c/o Industrial Hardwood,
Inc., R.R. 2, Box 606, Mount Union, Pa. 17066. A need-based scholarship
fund is being established in memory of Mr. Herzberg for lumber

Ralph F. "Pete" WINGARD, 80, of Canoe Creek, Williamsburg, R.R. 2, died
Thursday evening April 6. 2000, at the Altoona Hospital, following an
extended illness. Born March 31, 1920, in Catharine Township,
Williamsburg, R.R. 1, he was the son of the late John Harvey and Anna
(Farber) Wingard. He married Ruth E. Hearn Aug. 4, 1949, in
Williamsburg. She survives at home, along with several nieces and
nephews. The last surviving member of his immediate family, he was
preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters: Merle 0. and Harvey
N. Wingard, Mary Vorhees and Pearl Manning. Mr. Wingard was a member of
Yellow Springs Evangelical Lutheran Church, Williamsburg, R.R. 1, where
he previously served as vice president of the church council and was
assistant communion server. He retired as a rural mail carrier from the
U.S. Post Office in Williamsburg in 1979, after 20 years of service.
Then he worked as an automobile courier for John Stuckey Ford,
Hollidaysburg. Mr. Wingard attended the Hollidaysburg area schools. He
was an Army veteran of World War II, serving from 1938 until 1945 and
participating in the second wave of D-Day, landing at Normandy. He was
awarded the Bronze Star Medal and the European-African-Middle Eastern
Service Medal with bronze arrowhead. Then he served in the Korean
Conflict, where he attained the rank of staff sergeant and was awarded
the Korean Service Medal with three Bronze Stars. Mr. Wingard enjoyed
golfing, hunting and fishing. He was a member of the Portage Lodge, Free
and Accepted Masons, Hollidaysburg; Altoona Consistory, where he
participated in the 16th and 32nd degree and was degree master of the
15th degree for 20 years, receiving the meritorious award in 1998; Jaffa
Shrine and its Arab Patrol; Past Masters Club; and the Hillbilly Club.
He was also a member of the Tall Cedars of Lebanon and Fort Fetter
American Legion Post. Funeral services were held this morning. Interment
was made in the Henry's Lutheran Cemetery at Yellow Springs,
Williamsburg, R.R. 1, with full military honors. Memorial contributions
may be made to Yellow Springs Lutheran Church or the Jaffa Shrine
Endowment Fund.
Ruth Ann (Carpenter) ANDERS, 50, of P.O. Box 98, 10 Shaversville Circle,
Newton Hamilton, died at 1:20 a.m. Tuesday, April 11, 2000, at the
Lewistown Hospital, following a serious illness. Born July 27, 1949, in
Streator, Ill., she was the daughter of the late Gertrude (Harmsen)
Carpenter who survives in Streator, Ill., and the late Kenneth E.
Carpenter. She was united in marriage to Thomas D. Anders Feb. 28, 1968,
in Upper Marlboro, Md. Mr. Anders survives at home, along with a
daughter, Stacey A. Anders. One brother and one sister survive: Diana S.
Woodburn of Pontiac, Ill.; and Kenneth Carpenter of Long Point, 111. Ten
nieces and nephews survive. She was a member of the Grace Covenant
Church, Lewistown. A 1967 graduate of Woodland High School in Streator,
she was employed by the Mount Union Area School District at the
Mapleton-Union Elementary School as a cafeteria aide. Prior to that, she
had been employed as a fingerprint technician at the FBI in Washington,
D.C. Mrs. Anders enjoyed making crafts, sewing, crocheting and
traveling. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, April 14, at
the Robert D. Heath Funeral Home, Mount Union, with the Rev. Michael
Bailey and the Rev. Danny Neff officiating. Interment will be made in
the Memorial Cemetery, Newton Hamilton. Friends may call at the funeral

Elizabeth A. EMERY, 88, formerly of Blacklog Valley, HCR 60, Orbisonia,
died at 9:55 p.m. Monday, April 10, 2000, at the Woodland Retirement
Center, Orbisonia. Born Feb. 7, 1912, at Blandburg, she was a daughter
of the late Joseph and Norma Mann. She married Edward N. Emery, who
preceded her in death Dec. 17, 1968. One daughter, Goldie 1. Kriner of
Pittsburgh, survives, along with eight grandchildren and 12 great-
grandchildren. One sister, Linda Gummo of Tyrone, survives. Mrs. Emery
was preceded in death by a daughter, Norma, a son, Melvin, and a number
of brothers and sisters. She was a member of the Valley Point Church of
the Brethren. She was a homemaker. Private funeral services will be held
at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 13, at the Martin R. Brown Funeral Home,
Orbisonia, with the Rev. Lewis E. Powell officiating. Interment will be
made in the Upper Blacklog Valley Cemetery, HCR 60, Orbisonia. There

Mary Eva KNEPPER, 99, of Fairfield, Ohio, died Monday, March 20, 2000,
at 2:16 a.m., in the Community Multicare Center. Born Sept. 29, 1900, in
Clear Ridge, she was the daughter of James Barton and Annie (Wilson)
Stevens. She married Howard B. Knepper May 26, 1918. He preceded her in
death in 1980. She is survived by her children: Evelyn Wendel,
Fairfield; Wayne Knepper, Morrow, Ohio; and Blair Knepper, Fairfield.
There are seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Mrs. Knepper
was the member of the Lindenwald United Methodist Church. She was
educated in, the Pennsylvania public schools. Interment was made in the

Pierce Cleveland "Pete", NAUGLE, 81, of Mount Hope, W.Va., formerly of
Shade Gap, died Monday, April 10, 2000, at his home, following a lengthy
illness. Born Oct. 21, 1918, in Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late
Grover Cleveland and Jillian (Mentzer) Naugle. He is survived by two
sons: Clarence E. Naugle, Mount Hope, W.Va.; and Theadore C. Naugle,
Blairs Mills, R.D. There are five grandchildren, three
great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Also surviving are
the following brothers and sisters: Guy Naugle, Mapleton; Floyd Naugle,
Medford, Ore.; Pauline Brown, Hanover; and Verna Horn, Huntingdon. One
daughter, Patsy Jean Barrick, preceded him in death. Mr. Naugle was a
member of the Fair Ridge Assembly of God Church, Shade Gap and also
attended the Maple Valley Missionary Baptist Church in Mount Hope, W.Va.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, April 14, at the Martin
R. Brown Funeral Home, Orbisonia, with the Rev. Rick Eminhizer

Gladys M. STILES, 91, formerly of 517 13th St., Huntingdon, died Monday,
April 10, 2000, at 8 p.m., at the Epworth Manor in Tyrone. Born May 20,
1908, in Maddensville, she was the daughter of the late Thomas G. and
Amanda (Brown) Locke. Her first husband, Paul F. Prough, preceded her in
death in 1960. Her second husband, Charles Stiles, also preceded her in
death. Surviving are two children: Ronald L. Prough, Williamsburg, Va.;
and Judith M. (Prough) Rogers, Huntingdon, R.D. 3. There are five
grandchildren and eight great- grandchildren. One son, Frederick J.
Prough, is deceased. One sister and one brother, Flora Cascar of
Huntingdon and Dale Locke of Hagerstown, Md., survive. Four brothers and
two sisters preceded her in death. Mrs. Stiles was a member of the
Fifteenth Street United Methodist Church, Huntingdon. She was a
dedicated wife, mother and grandmother. Private funeral services will be
held at the convenience of the family at the Robert E. Peters Funeral
Home, Huntingdon, with the Rev. David L. Dearing officiating. Interment
will be made in the Riverview Cemetery, Huntingdon. There will be no

Robert B. RHUNKE, 75, of Mainline Nursing and Rehabilitation Center,
Malvern, formerly of Saxton, died Monday, April 10, 2000, at 10:45 a.m.,
at the center, following an extended illness. Born May 19,1924, in
Hoboken, N.J., he married Elvina Jane Rhoat August 1989, in Huntingdon.
She survives at Mainline. Also surviving are the following stepchildren:
Thomas Evans, Piscataway, N.J.; Frank Lavornia, Kearny, N.J.; Pauline
Swope, Malvern; and Renee Dignazio, Harrison, N.J. There are 11
grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Mr. Rhunke attended the First
Church of God, Saxton. He was a member of the Saxton Sportsmen Club and
was an avid hunter. During World War 11, he served in the U.S. Navy. He
worked as a doorman at the Hotel Delmonico and the Mayfair Regency
Hotel, both in New York, for 25 years. He retired in 1993. Funeral
services will be held this evening at 8:30 p.m., at the D. Ronald Long
Funeral Chapel, Saxton, with Pastor John Robinson officiating. Interment
will be made at the convenience of the family at the Grandview Cemetery,

Bernadette D. "Bun" PANASITI, 77, formerly of 957 Cameron Ave., Tyrone,
and a resident of Laurel Crest Manor, Ebensburg, died Tuesday, April 11,
2000, at 4:25 a.m., at the Manor. Born Oct. 27, 1922, in Altoona, she
was the daughter of the late R. Kenneth and Edith (Hannon) Donnelly. She
married Anthony J. Panasiti June 2,1943, in Salina, Kan. Mr. Panasiti
preceded her in death Oct. 25, 1964. Seven children survive: Ann
Yingling, Summerville, S.C.; William M. Panasiti, Latrobe; Reed A.
Panasiti, Amherst, N.H.; Patti P. Carper, Tyrone, R.D. 1; Robert D.
Panasiti, Tyrone, R.D. 5; David J. Panasiti, Tyrone; and Jane (Panasiti)
Watkins, Broomall. There are 14 grandchildren. One sister, Joan D.
Houser of Altoona, and a brother, David Donnelly of Havertown, survive.
Mrs. Panasiti was a rnember of the St. Matthew's Roman Catholic Church,
Tyrone. A graduate of Huntingdon High School, she was employed by the
Bell Telephone Company before her marriage. Her husband, Tony, along
with his brothers and sisters, owned and operated the Villa Restaurant
in Tyrone, from 1936 until 1979. She enjoyed bowling, gardening and
stitchery. A funeral Mass will be held Friday, April 14, at 10 a.m., at
St. Matthew's Roman Catholic Church, with Father Joseph T. Orr
officiating. Interment will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery. Friends may

Ralph F. THOMAS, 81, of Ferguson Valley Road, McVeytown, died at 2:08
a.m. Tuesday, April 11, 2000, at Ohesson Manor Nursing Home, Lewistown.
Born June 21, 1918, in Beaver Springs, Snyder County, he was a son of
the late Adam and Alice (Felty) Thomas. His wife, Pearl E. (Kennedy)
Thomas, preceded him in death May 4, 1965. He married Helen L. Wharton
Dec. 6, 1976. She survives at home. Also surviving are the following
children: Gary K. Thomas, Lewistown; Terry T. Thomas, Blandon; Mrs.
Ralph (Barbara) Bitner, Reedsville; Danny M. Thomas, Boyertown. Several
step-children also survive: Mrs. Bud (Mildred) Royer, Shindle; Jean L.
Martin, Camp Hill; Mrs. Lewis (Sharon) Copenhaver, Shindle; Charles E.
Shields, Kalispelle, Mont.; Kenneth W. Shields, Columbus, Ga.; Donald L.
Shields, Shirleysburg; Peggy Lightner, Bethel Park. There are 15
grandchildren, 14 step-grandchildren; and 29 great-grandchildren. Two
sisters and a brother survive: Ada Ronayn, Lewistown; Sara Hood,
Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio; and Palmer Thomas, Cogan Station. He was preceded
in death by a step-son, Thomas E. Shields, and numerous brothers and
sisters. Mr. Thomas was employed by the Lewistown Municipal Water
Company for 12 years, retiring in 1978. He had also worked for the
Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and Standard Steel, Burnham.

Paula A. MOUNTZ, 33, of 1408 Fourth Ave., Altoona, died Sunday evening,
April 9, 2000, at the Altoona Hospital, following an extended illness.
Born June 9, 1966, in Altoona, she was a daughter of Paul E. and Judy A.
(Pressler) Mountz, who survive in Tyrone. Also surviving are two
brothers, John F. of Altoona and Paul E. of Williamsburg, and a sister,
Crystal A. Orsino of Tipton. Miss Mountz was a member of the First
Church of Christ, Juniata Gap. She was a 1985 graduate of Juniata Valley
High School. She collected Dallas Cowboys memorabilia and enjoyed
hunting and fishing. Funeral services were held Wednesday. Interment was
made in the Grandview Cemetery, Altoona. Memorial contributions may be

Erma Brown PARSONS, 89, of HCR 60, Orbisonia, died at 11:15 p.m.
Tuesday, April 11, 2000, at her home. Born Jan. 19, 1911, in
Maddensville, Springfield Township, Huntingdon County. she was a
daughter of the late Howard 0. and Rosena (Wible) Brown. She was united
in marriage to Emory W. Parsons Sr. Nov. 6, 1935, in Roanoke, Va. Her
husband preceded her in death July 17, 1978. Surviving are two children:
Mrs. James (Barbara) Barlow, Orbisonia; and Emory W. Parsons Jr.,
Mercersburg. There are seven grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
Mrs. Parsons graduated from the Orbisonia High School in the Class of
1926 and from the J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital School of Nursing,
Huntingdon, with the Class of 1930. She was a member of the J.C. Blair
Memorial Hospital Alumnae Association and DAR. She was also a former BPW
member and belonged to the Farm Women's Group of Tell Township. A member
of Walnut Grove Church of God, she was primarily a homemaker. A funeral
service will be conducted Saturday, April 15, at 11 a.m., at the Walnut
Grove Church of God, with the Rev. Rockne Shaal officiating. Interment

Edward D. "Dewey" PORTER, 52, of 6015 Honeywood Ave., St. Thomas, died
Wednesday, April 12, 2000, at 6:30 p.m., at York Hospital, York, as a
result of a car accident April 5, in St. Thomas Township. Born Sept. 6,
1947, in Shippensburg, he was the son of the late Clarence W. and
Dorothy A. (Polites) Porter. He married Janice R. Gahagan April 1, 1971.
She survives at home. The following children survive: Mrs. Michael
(Christina) Kendle, Delaware; Dewey Edward Noel, Winchester, Va.; Mrs.
Kevin (Barbara) Hawn, Huntingdon; Holly Porter, New Jersey; Mrs. Edgar
(April) Statler, St. Thomas; and Thomas D. Porter, also of St. Thomas.
There are six grandchildren. Also surviving are three brothers and three
sisters: Charles R. Porter, Thurmont, Md.; Gene A. Porter, Chambersburg;
Anthony L. Porter, Chambersburg; Mrs. Richard (Dorothy) Miller,
Thurmont, Md.; Mrs. John (Constance) Funk, Chambersburg; and Mrs.
Sherman (Sue) Hornbaker, Fayetteville. One granddaughter and two
brothers preceded him in death. Mr. Porter was retired due to a physical
disability. Formerly he was a manager and maintenance man for apartment
buildings in Phoenix, Ariz. His hobbies included fishing, woodworking
and playing bingo. Funeral services will be held at the convenience of

Charles CAFFARELLI, 87, of Tyrone, formerly a long-time resident of
Ironsville, died Saturday, April 15, 2000, at 10:25 a.m., at Epworth
Manor. He had been a resident of the manor since 1993. Born Oct. 20,
1912, in San Piero Patti, Sicily, Italy, he was a son of the late
Charles and Santa (Germino) Caffarelli. He married Rosanna Pagano Feb.
2, 1935, in Mount Union. She preceded him in death Dec. 25, 1997.
Surviving are three daughters and two sons: Joanne S. Grimm, Tyrone;
Evelyn M. Headings, Palm Springs, Calif.; Rosanna Lower, Lancaster;
Charles Caffarelli Jr., Syracuse, N.Y.; and James Caffarelli, Altoona.
There are nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. One sister,
Rose Turiano of Tyrone, survives. One sister, Pauline, and two brothers,
Joseph and Frank, preceded him in death. Mr. Caffarelli retired in 1975
as a self-employed general contractor of Tyrone following 23 years of
service. He was previously employed at John C. Yenter Construction,
Tyrone, and had worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad for 10 years. He
was a member of St. Matthew's Catholic Church and the Blazing Arrow and
Ladder Fire Company. He enjoyed small game hunting and gardening. A
funeral Mass will be held today at 2 p.m. at St. Matthew's Church with
the Rev. Joseph T. Orr officiating. Interment will follow at the Oak

James Donald PROUGH, 16, of 176 King St., Petersburg, died Friday, April
14, 2000, in Petersburg. Born March 25, 1984, in Huntingdon, he was the
son of Donald G. and Bonnie L. (Bishop) Prough. He is survived by his
father of Huntingdon and his mother and step-father, Ronald Reihart, of
Petersburg. One brother, Timothy A. Prough, survives at home. Also
surviving are a step-brother and step-sisters: Donald Prough Jr., Tammy
Prough and Lynn Marie Prough, all of Florida. A number of aunts, uncles
and cousins also survive. James was of the Protestant faith. He was a
member of the sophomore class at the Juniata Valley High School and
attended the Huntingdon County Career and Technology Center in the air
conditioning/refrigeration program. He had played football for a number
of years and had been a member of the Juniata Valley High School Green
Hornet Varsity Team this past fall. He enjoyed the outdoors, fishing,
hunting and four-wheeling with his friends. Funeral services will be
held Wednesday, April 19, at 2 p.m., at the Robert E. Peters Funeral
Home, Huntingdon, with the Rev. Donald E. Dick officiating. Interment
will be made in the Cedar Grove Cemetery, Petersburg. The family will

Raymond W. THOMPSON Sr., 90, of Huntingdon, R.D. 1, died Sunday, April
16, 2000, at 12:50 a.m., at his residence. He had been in failing health
for the past three months. Born Sept. 12, 1909, in Walker Township, he
was the son of the late J. Ernest and Gladys Mae (Bupp) Thompson. He was
united in marriage to Marion Baker Oct. 15, 1949, in Marklesburg. Mrs.
Thompson survives at home. Also surviving are a son and a daughter:
Raymond W. Thompson Jr. and Barbara J. Linn, both of Huntingdon. There
are four grandchildren. The last surviving member of his immediate
family, he was preceded in death by one sister, Rosie Hearn. Mr.
Thompson was of the Methodist faith. He was self-employed in general
farming and was also a turkey farmer for 52 years. He had previously
worked for the Huntingdon Silk Mill. Mr. Thompson attended the public
schools in Walker Township. He had been a resident of Huntingdon County
since his birth and had lived at his current residence since 1918. He

Sara Ann SPANGLER, 87, of Oneida Township, Huntingdon, R.D. 2, died
Sunday, April 16, 2000, at 11:45 a.m., at her Oneida Township home. Born
June 26, 1912, in Milroy, she was the daughter of the late John and Mary
(Dickson) Monsell. She married George Albert Spangler Jr. in 1932, in
Hagerstown, Md. Mr. Spangler preceded her in death June 28, 1977.
Surviving are the following children: Mrs. Harold (Margaret) Randolph,
Belleville; Charles Spangler, Spring Mills; Helen McMinn, Burnham; Joyce
Poleck, Petersburg; Connie Spangler and Anna Spangler, both of
Huntingdon. There are 11 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and three
great-great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter,
Frances L. Little, Sept. 13,. 1998, and a grandson, John Carl Cramer.
Mrs. Spangler was primarily a homemaker. She was a member of the Milroy
United Methodist Church, was an avid bingo player and enjoyed cooking
and baking. She had been a resident of Huntingdon County since 1955 and
had lived at her Oneida Township home for the past 30 years. Funeral
services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 18, at the Cutright-Speck
Funeral Home, Ridge Road and Juniata Ave., Smithfield, Huntingdon, with
Pastor Bert A. Bowen officiating. Interment will be made in the Donation

Edna A. (Ritchey) SHORE, 82, of 213 Ninth St., Huntingdon, formerly of
810 Washington St., Huntingdon, died Sunday, April 16, 2000, at 9:30
a.m., at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, following an extended illness.
Born July 2, 1917, in Saxton, she was the daughter of the late John T.
and Estella (Smith) Ritchey. She was united in marriage to Eugene T.
Shore Nov. 2, 1968, in Chambersburg, with her cousin, the Rev. John
Ritchey officiating. Mr. Shore survives at their Huntingdon residence.
One brother, Arthur J. Ritchey of Huntingdon, survives, along with a
number of nieces and nephews. Three brothers and four sisters preceded
her in death. Mrs. Shore was a member of the St. James Evangelical
Lutheran Church, Huntingdon. She was a member of the J.C. Blair Memorial
Hospital Auxiliary, Social Ministry Committee at St. James Evangelical
Lutheran Church, and was also a volunteer for Meals on Wheels for a
number of years. Mrs. Shore worked as a cashier/usher at the Clifton
Theater for many years and previously had been employed by Ritchey's
Market, Huntingdon, as a clerk. She was also a licensed cosmetologist. A
1936 graduate of the Huntingdon High School, she graduated from Nelson
Beauty Academy in 1937. She had been a resident of Huntingdon County for
over 70 years and had lived at her Washington Street home for 18 years.
Mrs. Shore enjoyed sewing, cooking and baking Christmas cookies and,
particularly enjoyed volunteer work and friends. A funeral service will
be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 18, at the John B. Brown Funeral Home,
Inc., Huntingdon, with the Rev. Peter J. Naschke officiating. Interment
will be made in the Huntingdon Memorial Gardens, Huntingdon. Friends may

Wilmer "Piper" DONAHUE, 78, of 602 16th St., Saxton, died Sunday, April
16, 2000, at 11:10 a.m., in the emergency room of the Nason Hospital,
Roaring Spring. His death was unexpected. Born July 17, 1921, in
Robertsdale, he was the son of the late William J. and Janet (Wood)
Donahue. He married Madge (Musser) Baughman June 1953, in Six Mile Run.
She preceded him in death Feb. 27, 1991. Surviving are a daughter, Janet
Donahue of Saxton and a stepson, Jon Baughman of Dudley. There are five
grandchildren. One sister, Mildred Drenning of Kenmore, N.Y. survives.
One grandson; two sisters, Wanda Donahue and Almeda Brown; a
half-brother, Webster McClain; and a brother, William J. Donahue Jr.,
preceded him in death. Mr. Donahue was a member of the Stonerstown
Church of the Brethren. A graduate of the Robertsdale High School, he
served in the U.S. Air Force as a sergeant during World War 11 and in
the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the Huntingdon VFW Post No. 1754
and the Broad Top Area Senior Citizens. He was one of the co-founders of
the Tussey Mountain School Service Personnel Association. He retired in
1983 from the Tussey Mountain High School maintenance department after
22 years of service. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and
fishing. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 19, at 3 p.m.,
at the D. Ronald Long Funeral Chapel, Saxton, with Pastor Sarah Melone
officiating. Interment will be made in the IOOF Cemetery, Broad Top

Ian Paul FUIEK, 13, of 400 Washington St., Petersburg, died at 11 a.m.
Friday. April 14, 2000, at his residence. Born Sept. 27, 1986, in
Lewistown, he was the son of Paul Fuiek of Petersburg and Sherry Lee
(Hesser) Justice of Huntingdon. Surviving along with his parents are his
maternal grandmother, Elizabeth Jean Hesser of Huntingdon and paternal
grandparents, John and Lela Fuiek, also of Huntingdon. He was preceded
in death by his maternal grandfather, Dave Hesser and paternal
grandmother, Olga Fuiek. Ian was an eighth grade student at the Juniata
Valley High School. A memorial service will be held Thursday, April 20,
at 2 p.m., at the Word of Life Fellowship Church, with Pastor Dan Alway
officiating. Interment will be made at the convenience of the family at

Raymond L. BICKEL, 71, of 375 Clairemont Dr., Carlisle, died Friday,
April 14, 2000, in the Clairemont Nursing and Rehabilitation Center,
Carlisle. Born July 29, 1929, in Mapleton, he was the son of the late
William H. and Adda Bickel. Surviving are his wife, Isabelle of Camp
Hill, one son and two daughters: Lee Bickel, Hampden Township; Maureen
Beatty, Hummelstown; and Tamara (Bickel) McCoy, Camp Hill. There are
nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. One brother, Robert
Bickel of Mill Creek, survives. Mr. Bickel had been employed as a paper
worker at Appleton Papers. He was a member of the Mechanicsburg
Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses. A veteran of World War II, he
served in the U.S. Navy's submarine service. A memorial service will be

Elizabeth F. "Libby" CALDERONE, 72, of 27 Taylor Apartments, Mount
Union, died at 11:08 a.m. Sunday, April 16, 2000, in. the emergency room
of J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, Huntingdon. Her death was unexpected.
Born July 11, 1927, in Williamsburg, she was the daughter of the late
John and Julie (Ciolli) Calderone. One daughter, Mary Ann Calderone of
Germantown, Md., survives. Also surviving are a sister and two brothers:
Jacqueline Jenkins, Three Springs; Frank Calderone, Huntingdon; and Hugh
Calderone, Wilmington, Del. One sister, Julia Grant, and a brother,
Andrew Calderone, preceded her in death. Miss Calderone was a member of
St. Catherine's Church, Mount Union, where she was an active Eucharistic
Minister and a member of the St. Catherine's Prayer Group and St.
Catherine's Catholic Daughters. She was also a member and trustee of the
Sons of Italy Lodge No. 1257, Mount Union. Miss Calderone was a member
of the board of directors of the Mount Union Chapter of the American Red
Cross. She was associated with the Red Cross for over 30 years, and was
currently coordinator of Blood Services and representative for the Armed
Forces Emergency Services (AFES). A 1946 graduate of the Mount Union
High School, she was employed by Greif Brothers Manufacturing for 27
years. A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 19, at
the St, Catherine's Church, Mount Union, with the Rev. Elwood Figurelle
officiating. Interment will be made in the St. Catherine's Cemetery,

Betty Jane SNYDER, 63, of Main Street, McConnellsburg, formerly of
Hustontown, died April 16, 2000, at 3 p.m., at home. Born April 5, 1937,
in Wood, she was the daughter of the late William H. and Florence E.
(Sparks) Smith. She married Elwood Snyder, who survives in Hustontown.
The following siblings survive: Charles Smith, Hustontown; Allen Smith,
Chambersburg; Peggy Barnett, Dudley; Sam Smith, Charleston, W.Va.; the
Rev. Archie Smith, Meyersdale; and Paul Smith, Dudley. An infant son,
and a sister, Wanda King, preceded her in death. Mrs. Snyder was a
member of the Mt. Carmel Church of God, Hustontown, where she was active
in the Mt. Carmel Ladies Ministries. She was primarily a homemaker.

Ronald Long Funeral Chapel, Saxton, with Sister Elizabeth Bridges

Harold L. BECKENBAUGH, 74, of 270 Jacks Creek Rd., Lewistown, died at 4
p.m. Monday, April 17, 2000, at his residence. Born June 11, 1925, in
Spring Run, he was the son of the late Glenn and Sara (Forrester)
Beckenbaugh. He married Vivian (Long) Bratton in 1975, who survives.
Also surviving are a son, Robert Beckenbaugh of Lewistown, and three
stepchildren: John Bratton, Christiana; Janet Rhodes, Thompsontown; and
Charles Bratton, McVeytown. There are seven grandchildren and 10
great-grandchildren. One brother, Jim Beckenbaugh of Lewistown,
survives. One brother, Wayne Beckenbaugh, preceded him in death. Mr.
Beckenbaugh was an electrician for D.C. Goodman in Mount Union and
Lepley's in Lewistown. He was a member of Standing Stone Post No. 1754,
VFW of Huntingdon. During World War 11, he served in the U.S. Navy.

Joseph D. FAIRCLOTH, 64, of Lower Paxton Township, Harrisburg, died
Monday, April 17, 2000, at Community General Osteopathic Hospital. Born
April 2, 1936, in East Stroudsburg, he was the son of Dewey and Dortha
(Hay) Faircloth. He is survived by his wife, the former Abbie G.
Hennings, and a son, Duane J. Faircloth of Long Beach, Calif. Two
sisters, Lela H. Dennis of Pocono Summit; and Miriam Miller, York,
survive. One brother, Donald Faircloth, preceded him in death. Mr.
Faircloth retired from the Pennsylvania State Police after 27 years of
service. For a number of years, he was stationed with the state police
in Huntingdon. He was currently working for the Cremation Society of
Pennsylvania and Zimmerman-Auer Funeral Home, Harrisburg. Mr. Faircloth
was a member of the First Alliance Church, Harris burg. Funeral services
will be held Thursday, April 20, at 11 a.m., at the First Alliance

Joseph James RAMSEY Sr., 81, of Metzler Road, Wells Tannery, died at
2:25 p.m. Monday, April 17, 2000, at UPMC Bedford Memorial Hospital,
Everett. Born Nov. 24, 1918, in Altoona, he was the son of the late
Morris Weldon and Anna Marie (Bickle) Ramsey. He was united in marriage
to Mary Jane Hoffman, who preceded him in death April 8, 1998. One
daughter and one son survive: Betty Jo House, Breezewood, and Joseph J.
Ramsey Jr., Wells Tannery. There are five grandchildren. Also surviving
are two sisters and one brother: Naomi Garnese, McConnellsburg; Betty
Yeager, Chambersburg; and Bill Ramsey, Connellsville. One daughter,
Bonney Lee Oswald, a brother, Ben Ramsey, and a sister, Thelma Swope,
preceded him in death. Mr. Ramsey attended the Wells Valley United
Methodist Church, Wells Tannery. He was a member of the American Legion
Post No. 223, Shippensburg, and Disabled American Veterans Chapter PA
12. A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Infantry in
the South Pacific. He was wound ed twice and was a medal recipient. Mr.
Ramsey retired in 1973 from Letterkenny Army Depot, Chambersburg, after
33 years of service. He loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter and
fisherman. He was also an active antique dealer at Fulton Antiques,
McConnellsburg, and at Shriver's Indoor Flea Market, Martinsburg.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 20, at the M.R.
Brown Funeral Home, Hustontown, with the Rev. Kenneth Cornelius
officiating. Interment will be made in the Wells Tannery Methodist
Cemetery, Wells Tannery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 7

Harvey Willis PEACHEY, 43, of 107 Locke Ave., Yeagertown, died at 5:44
a.m. Wednesday, April 19, 2000, in the emergency room of the Lewistown
Hospital. Born Oct. 16, 1956, in Lewistown, he was a son of Harvey L.
and Deloris (Wilson) Peachey, who survive in Belleville. He is also
survived by a companion, Lori Maben of Yeagertown. Also surviving are
his maternal grandmother, Catherine Wilson, Petersburg, R.R. 1; and
brothers Barry L. Peachey, Carlisle; Randal L. Peachey, Belleville; and
Gregg A. Peachey, Huntingdon. Mr. Peachey had been employed as a meat
cutter at Peachey Foods, Belleville. He was a member of the Maple Grove
Mennonite Church, Belleville. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. Funeral

Ellen Magdalena (Wesner) JENKINS, died April 19, 2000, at Williamsport
Hospital, after a brief illness. Born March 29, 1917, in Huntingdon, she
was the daughter of the late Charles W. and Lulu Mae (Kelley) Wesner.
She married Robert E. Jenkins Sr., who preceded her in death. She is
survived by her four children: Charles D. Jenkins II , Summerville,
S.C.; Robert E. Jenkins Jr., Northville, N.Y.; Brooke W. Jenkins,
Columbia, Md.; and Beth Ellen Jenkins-Hunt, Gaithersburg, Md. There are
ten grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. A resident of Loyalsock
Township for the past 27 years, Mrs. Jenkins was a member of St. Marks
Lutheran Church and was an enthusiastic volunteer in the community,
serving at Sycamore Manor for 15 years, Divine Providence Hospital, and
was an active member of her church's sewing group. She followed her
husband, who, was an FBI agent, to assignments in Knoxville, Tenn.; St.
Louis, Mo.; Mexico, Mo.; Dover, N.J.; Kingston, N.Y.; Lancaster;
Wellsboro and finally to Williamsport. She was an avid bird watcher and
imbued the same interest in all her children. She also loved to fly in
any type of aircraft. Soaring in a glider in Elmira, N.Y., was one of
her fondest memories. Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 22,
at 9 a.m., at Spitler Funeral Home, Montoursville, with the Rev. Kenneth
R. Elkin officiating. Interment will be made in the Twin Hills Memorial

Travis J. WRIGHT, 21. of P.O. Box 312 Kistler, Mount Union, died
unexpectedly at 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 19, 2000, in Kistler. Mr.
Wright was born Oct. 13, 1978, in Lewistown, the son of Edward A. Wright
Sr. of Shirleysburg and Kathy J. (Getz) Wright of Kistler. Surviving
along with his parents are a brother and a sister: Edward A. Wright,
Kistler; and Danielle R. Huffnagle, Shirleysburg. Also surviving are his
paternal grandmother, Elsie Wright, Mount Union; his maternal
grandmother, Eleanor Wasson, Newton Hamilton; and his maternal
grandfather, Erman Getz, Kistler. One niece also survives. Travis had
been employed by Empire Kosher in Mifflintown. He had attended the Mount
Union Area High School. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing the

Mary Grace FETTER, 79, a native and former resident of Orbisonia, died
unexpectedly Saturday, April 15, 2000, at the Holy Cross Medical Center
in Mission Hills, Calif.
Born Oct. 9, 1920, in Orbisonia, she was the daughter of the late Frank T.
"Doc" and Esther C. Allender, former owners of the "corner drugstore" on Ridgely
Street in Orbisonia.
Mrs. Fetter is survived by her husband of 59 years, James R. Fetter Sr.,
formerly of Greensburg. The couple wed Oct. 12, 1940. Mr. Fetter
presently resides at Ember Care Center, 12831 Maclay St., Sylmar,
Calif., 91342. Her sister, Betty A. Lane of Newark, Del.; and her
brother, Frank L. Allender of Valencia, Calif., also survive her. Her
surviving children are James R. Fetter, Jr., Rockville, Md., Jerry D.
Fetter, Valencia, Calif.; Frank E. Fetter, Las Vegas, Nev.; and Glenn P.
Fetter of Mary Esther, Fla. An infant son, John T. Fetter, preceded her
in death. Also surviving are seven grandchildren and five
great-grandchildren. Mrs. Fetter was a member of the Orbisonia
Presbyterian Church, and a graduate of the Orbisonia High School, Class
of 1940. She was a homemaker and a special friend to all who knew her.
She enjoyed music, cooking, baking, reading and gardening. She also had
a lifelong love of horses and equestrian activities. An announcement of
interment and/or memorial service at Lloyd's Cemetery in Ebensburg will
be made in the future.
Esther F. Rankin HALL, 61, of Six Mile Run, died Friday, April 21, 2000,
at UPMC Bedford Memorial Hospital, following an extended illness. Born
April 7, 1939, in Joller, she was the daughter of the late Jesse and
Alice (Laidig) Gracey. She was united in marriage to Robert Hall July 5,
1981, in the Riddlesburg Independent Bible Church, by the Rev. Jesse
Musser. Mr. Hall survives at home. Five children survive: Rhonda Thomas,
and Susan Rankin, both of Saxton; Tim Rankin, Six Mile Run; Jeff Rankin,
Saxton; and Shane Rankin, Six Mile Run. There are 12 grandchildren and
three great- grandchildren. One daughter and one granddaughter preceded
her in death. Mrs. Hall is also survived by five brothers and sisters:
Thelma Cowan, Wilmington, Del.; Ruth Everhart, Scottdale; William
Gracey, Saxton; Gerald Fred Gracey, Robertsdale; and Charles Gracey, Six
Mile Run. One sister and four brothers preceded her in death. Most
recently, Mrs. Hall attended the Six Mile Run Church of God. She enjoyed
gardening, crafts, flowers, fishing, and was an avid fan of baseball and
the Chicago Cubs. She was primarily a homemaker. Funeral services will
be held Tuesday, April 25, at 10 a.m., at the Six Mile Run Church. of
God, with the Rev. Stanley Cordell officiating. Interment will be made

Douglas E. HARMAN, 36, of Mount Union, R.R. 2, died early Saturday
morning, April 22, 2000. He had been in failing health. Born June 2,
1963, in Huntingdon, he was the son of Harry E. and Sally (Gilbert)
Harman, who survive in Allenport. He was united in marriage to Melissa
"MissyMcCartney June 24, 1989 in their home. She survives at home, along
with two daughters;Latisha M. Harman and Felicia N. Harman, both at
home. One sister, Janice Blair of Shirleysburg, R.R. 1, also survives.
Mr. Harman was employed by Hickes Associates in Alexandria. For the past
three years, he had worked as a plumbing foreman. H was a 1981 graduate
or the Mount Union Area High School. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and
camping. He was also a fan of the Denver Broncos. He was a member of the
New Life Fellowship Church, Mount Union, R.R. 1. A funeral service will
be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 25, at the New Life Fellowship
Church, Route 522, South, Mt. Union, with the Rev. Dayton Sines
officiating. Interment will follow in the Mount Union Cemetery. Friends

Ralph P. MADDEN, 46, of South Philipsburg, died Wednesday, April 19,
2000, at his residence. Born March 25, 1954, in West Chester, he was the
son of the late Sanford and Roberta Madden. He married Nancy Zonge July
4, 1998, in Philipsburg. She survives in Lexington, Ky. Also surviving
are three daughters: Brianna Madden, Lexington, Ky.; Dominique Madden
and Keirah Madden, both of State College. Three stepdaughters and three
stepsons survive: Cassie Gibboney, Lexington, Ky.; Mrs. Greg (Jennifer)
Campbell, Camp Hill; Courtney Sopp, West Hollywood, Calif.; Sean
Gibboney, Stephen Gibboney and Daniel Gibboney, all of Lexington, Ky.
Three granddaughters and two sisters survive. His first wife, Bonnie
Madden of State College, also survives. Mr. Madden was preceded in death
by one brother. He was a 1972 graduate of the Huntingdon Area High
School. He enjoyed playing basketball, listening to music, his children
and his cats. A memorial service will be held at the Davis K. Dahlgren
Funeral Home, 228 N. Centre St., Philipsburg, Tuesday, April 25, at 7

Dorothy (Wagner) ROTH, 90, of 1231 Oneida St., Huntingdon, died Friday,
April 21, 2000, at 4:48 a.m., at her residence. Born April 6, 1910, in
Defiance, she was the daughter of the late Stanley and Annie (Hitchens)
Wagner. She married Charles William Roth in 1929. Mr. Roth survives at
home. One daughter, Marianne R. Arney of Swatara Township, Harrisburg,
survives, along with four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
One sister, Mary Irwin of Middleburg, Va., survives, along with a
stepbrother, John Port of Huntingdon. She was preceded in death by two
stepbrothers, Chalmer Port and Bernard Port. Mrs. Roth was a member of
the Stone Church of the Brethren, Huntingdon, amd of the Standing Stone
Senior Citizens Center, also of Huntingdon. She had been employed by the
Bell Telephone Company for 25 years. She later worked for Mead School
and Office Products as a receptionist/operator. She retired in 1965.
Mrs. Roth attended the Huntingdon public schools and graduated from
Huntingdon High School in 1928. She had lived at her current residence
since 1936. A memorial service will be held at the John B. Brown Funeral
Home, Inc., Huntingdon, Wednesday, April 26, at 11 a.m., with the Rev.
Dale W. Dowdy and the. Rev. Christy L. Dowdy, officiating. Interment

Mary E. (Brumbaugh) WEYANDT, 88, formerly of Altoona, and most recently
of McVeytown, R,.D. 1, died at 12:07 a.m.Saturday, April 22, 2000,. at
the Woodland Retirement Center, Orbisonia., Born Oct. 26, 1911, in
Altoona, she was the daughter of the late Orville C. and Orpha (Pote)
Brumbaugh. She married Herman C. Weyandt in 1936. He preceded her in
death December 1968. One son, William B. Weyandt of Mount Union, R.D. 1,
survives, along with a grandson and one great-granddaughter. One sister,
Winifred Obrien, preceded her in death. Mrs. Weyant was a member of the
28th Street Church of the Brethren, Altoona. She graduated from the
Altoona High School. She was a member of the Mount Union American Legion
Post No. 107 and retired in 1972 as a test administrator for the
Pennsylvania State Unemployment office in Altoona. Funeral services will
be private and interment will be made in the. Hunsinger Cemetery,

Richard G. BOWERS, 73, of Broad Top, R.D. 1, died Monday, April 24,
2000, at. 8 a.m., at the Altoona Hospital following a brief illness.
Born Oct. 31, 1926, in Roaring Spring, he was the son of Wilmer Bowers
and the late Anna (Myers) Bowers. His father survives in Roaring Spring.
He married Arletta Gabrielson Nov. 6, 1953, in Roaring Spring. She
survives at home. Also surviving are two children: Jerry Rydom of
Roaring. Spring and Mrs. George (Susan) Klotz, Alexandria. There are
five grandchildren. Two brothers, Herbert Bowers and James Bowers, both
of Roaring Spring, survive. Mr. Bowers was preceded in death by a son,
David Bowers, in 1977, and a brother, Robert Bowers. He was a member of
the Trough Creek Community Church. A 1945 graduate of the Roaring Spring
High School, Mr. Bowers served in the U.S. Army during World War 11. He
retired in 1989 from New Enterprise Stone and Lime Co. For 46 years he
had worked as a cement mixer driver and at the time of his retirement he
was a crusher operator at the Roaring Spring plant. He was an avid
gardener and enjoyed hunting and fishing. Funeral services will be held

Natalie Kay HARBST, 9, daughter of Gary and Angie (Laird) Harbst of
Calvin, died at 12:30 p.m. Monday, April 24, 2000, at Conemaugh Regional
Medical Center, Johnstown, as a result of injuries sustained in an auto
accident. She was born Oct. 27, 1990, in Huntingdon. Along with her
parents, she is survived by the following; two sisters, Jennifer Harbst
and Nicole Harbst, both at home; paternal grandparents, Gene and Bonnie
Harbst, Star Route, Huntingdon; maternal grandparents, Kerry and Suzanne
Booher, Mount Union, R.D.; paternal great-grandfather, Merril Harbst,
Star. Route, Huntingdon, and maternal great-grandmother, Elda Myers,
Mount Union, R.D. She was of the Protestant faith and was a life member
of the National Rifle Association. She also belonged to Brownie Troop
No. 1320, Trough Creek Valley, and was a third grade student at the
Mapleton-Union Elementary School. A special children and youth memorial
service will be held at 6 p.m. this evening, April 26, at the Beavertown
Bible Church, Todd, R.D., with visitation following from 7 until 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 27, at the
Beavertown Bible Church, with Pastor James S. Thomas officiating.

Wilmer C. DAVIDSON, 78, of Three Springs, R.D. 1, died Monday, April 24,
2000, at his home. He had been in failing health for the last several
months. Born Dec. 18, 1921, at Glen Campbell, he was the son of the late
Alexander and Esther (Hawk) Davidson. He never married. Surviving are a
sister and a brother: Margaret Painter, a resident of the Woodland
Retirement Center; and Harold Davidson, Orbisonia. Also surviving are a
niece, Betty Kay Winter of Three Springs, R.D. 1, and her four children,
who served as caregivers to Mr. Davidson. Mr. Davidson was of the
Protestant faith and was a member of the Williamsport F & AM. He retired
from AVCO Lycoming Industries, Williamsport, where he was an engine
technician for 35 years. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in
the U.S. Army Air Corps as a radio operator. Funeral services will be
held at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 27, at the Martin R. Brown Funeral Home,
Orbisonia, with the Rev. Charles Rhodes officiating. Interment will be

William R. ROSS, 63, of Huntingdon, R.D. 3, died Tuesday, April 25,
2000, at Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center, Johnstown. Born Feb. 25,
1937, in Henderson Township, Huntingdon County, he was the son of the
late Collins and Viola (McMullen) Ross. He was united in marriage to
Darlene, L. Campbell July 14, 1968, in the Mill Creek Baptist Church by
the Rev. Charles Cisney. Mrs. Ross survives at home. Also surviving are
two sisters: Mrs. William (Helen) Ebersole, McConnellstown; and Mrs.
Elva Brown, Hawaiian Gardens, Calif. One brother, Roy C. Ross, and three
sisters, Olive R. Ross, Edna McCarthy and Verda Isenberg, preceded him
in death. Mr. Ross was a member of the Mill Creek Baptist Church since
1986. He was elected Sunday School treasurer in 1992, assistant deacon
in 1994 and became deacon in 1998. He was employed by Juniata College
since 1955 as a groundsman and assistant college electrician. He became
college electrician in 1967. He retired in April 1999. Mr. Ross joined
the U.S. Army March 14, 1960. He completed his basic training at Ft.
Jackson, S.C. and track vehicle mechanic training at Ft. Knox, Ky. He
served in Carlsheim, Germany, from October 1960 until March 1963. While
in Germany, he attended training for MM13 personnel carriers and M60
tanks at Vilseck, where he was an honor graduate of the tracked vehicle
mechanic course,. He was honorably discharged March 13, 1963, with the
rank of Specialist 5. Funeral services will be held Friday, April 28, at
11 a.m., at, the Robert E. Peters Funeral Home, Huntingdon, with the
Rev. Raymond C. Crownover officiating. Interment will be made in the
IOOF Cemetery, Mapleton. The family will receive friends at the funeral
home after 7 p.m. Thursday and from 9 a.m. until the hour of the service
on Friday.

C. Wayne HESS, 81, of Three Springs, died at 10:25 p.m. Tuesday, April
25, 2000, at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, Huntingdon. Born Feb. 11,
1919, in Three Springs, he was a son of the late John B. and Estella
(Swartz) Hess. He married S. Jane Stevens June 23, 1951, in Huntingdon.
Mrs. Hess survives at home, along with two sons: Robert Wayne Hess,
Chesapeake, Va.; and David S. Hess, Greensburg. There are three
grandchildren. One brother, John C. Hess of Three Springs, and a sister,
Delores Reisher of Chambersburg, also survive. Mr. Hess was a member of
the First Baptist Church, Three Springs. He served as past master of
Cromwell Lodge No. 572, F&AM and was a member of Harrisburg Consistory;
Tall Cedars of Lebanon; Madden-Wennick Post No. 518 American Legion.
Rockhill Furnace; and Blue Juniata Post No. 5754 VFW, Mount Union. At
one time, he was involved with the Southern Huntingdon County High
School Football Booster Club. He was also a member of the Rural Mail
Carriers Association and was employed as a rural mail carrier from 1949
until his retirement in 1984. A veteran of World War II, he served in
the U.S. Army. Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, April
30, at the Three Springs Cemetery with the Rev. David Ford officiating.
Members of Cromwell Lodge No. 572, F&AM, will also conduct a Masonic

Eleanor (Porter) ITINGER, 88, of Warminster, died Tuesday, April 25,
2000, in Doylestown Hospital, Doylestown. Born in Petersburg, Mrs.
Itinger moved to the Levittown area in 1955 and lived there for 32 years
before returning to Petersburg for 12 years and then moving to
Warminster one year ago. She was the wife of the late H. Frederick
Itinger. She is survived by two sons and two daughters: Richard H.
Itinger, Tyrone; D. Edward Itinger, Philipsburg; Mrs. James Hollon
(Arlene) Page, Huntingdon; and Mrs. Patrick (Kathy Itinger Oliver)
Gilligan, with whom she resided. There are 11 grandchildren, seven
step-grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are a
brother, J. Marshall Porter of Morrisville, and a sister, Mrs. Eugene
(Dorothy) McMullin of Barree. One grandson, Dale S. Page, preceded her
in death.
Mrs. Itinger was primarily a homemaker but had worked for Woods
Services, Langhorne. She was a member of Christ United Methodist Church,
Fairless Hills, and Crever Memorial United Methodist Church, Petersburg.
She was a life member of the Pennsylvania State Grange, American Legion
Auxiliary in Petersburg and the Senior Citizens in Warminster and
Petersburg. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 29,
with private interment to follow. Relatives and friends are invited to

Walter L. "Jim" BUMBARGER, 76, of 297 Weaver Hill Road, Bellefonte, died
Tuesday, April 25, 2000, at 2:45 p.m., at the Centre Community Hospital,
State College. Born Oct. 12, 1923, in Alexandria, he was the son of the
late Walter R. "Dick" and Anna Olive (Fitzgerald) Bumbarger. He married
Agnes L. Hart July 10, 1947, at St. John's Episcopal Church in
Huntingdon. She preceded him in death Dec. 15, 1998. Surviving are three
children: Thomas W. Bumbarger, Huntingdon, R.D. 2; Mrs. Yakley (Nancy)
Ulrich and Ronald R. Bumbarger, both of Bellefonte. There are six
grandchildren. Also surviving are the following brothers and sisters:
Gertrude Peters, Huntingdon, R.D. 2; Jean Garner, HCR 1, Huntingdon;
Anna Satta, McConnelistown; Gladys Shaver, Huntingdon, R.D. 1; George
Bumbarger, Huntingdon, R.D. 2; Norman Bumbarger, Petersburg; John
Bumbarger, Huntingdon, R.D. 2; and Donna Ayers, Petersburg, R.D. 2. He
was preceded in death by a sister, Audrey Ross, and a brother, Marshall
"Pete" Bumbarger. Mr. Bumbarger was a member of the Calvary Bible
Church, Centre Hall. He was a repairman for Unlimited Rentals in State
College prior to his retirement in 1986. A veteran of World War 11, he
was a seaman first class in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theatre of War,
on the Philippine Islands. He loved hunting and fishing. Funeral

Marie H. WILLIAMS, 80, of 708 Church St., Saxton, died Wednesday, April
26, 2000, at 1:35 a.m., at Nason Hospital in Roaring Spring. Born April
30, 1919, in Roaring Spring, she was the daughter of the late Roy and
Mary (Howard) Hileman. She married Howard D. "Sam" Williams Oct. 5,
1940, in Washington, D.C. He preceded her in death Oct. 11, 1997. One
son, Larry H. Williams of Saxton, survives, along with two
granddaughters. One sister, Margaret K. Garner of Huntingdon, also
survives. She :was preceded in death by a sister, Lois Mentzer Ling.
Mrs. Williams was a member of the Trinity United Church of Christ,
Saxton. She owned and operated a beauty shop in Saxton for 26 years. She
and her husband also owned and operated Williams Dairy, Everett Milk and
Ice Cream and the Ben Franklin Store, all in Saxton. She retired in
1984. She was a founding member of the Saxton Women's Club, Saxton Civic
Club and First Contract Bridge Club, Saxton. Mrs. Williams enjoyed
golfing and was a member of the Huntingdon Country Club Ladies Golf and
Bridge Association for37 years. She also belonged to the Standing Stone
Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and was an avid
reader and enjoyed needlepoint. Funeral services will be held Saturday,
April 29, at 2 p.m., at the D. Ronald Long Funeral Chapel, Saxton, with

James M. LEADER, 82, of 204 Bratton Ave., Lewistown, formerly of Newton
Hamilton and Silverford Heights, Mount Union, died at William Penn
Nursing Home, Lewistown, Tuesday, April 25, 2000. Born March 5, 1918, in
Altoona, he was the son of Roy A. and Effie (Ferguson) Leader. He was
united in marriage to Sylvia L. Chilcote July 15, 1943, by the Rev.
Walter S. Long, at his home in Altoona. Mrs. Leader survives at home.
One sister, Mrs. John (Doris) Miller of Marion, survives, along with
five nephews. Mr. Leader was a graduate of the Altoona High School,
Class of 1936. He graduated from Juniata College in 1940 and received
his master's degree from Bucknell University. He did doctorate work at
Penn State University. From 1942 until 1943 he taught social studies at
Bellwood-Antis High School in Bellwood. Between 1943 and 1947, he taught
the same subject at McVeytown Oliver High School, McVeytown. From 1947
until 1950, he taught social studies at Derry Township High School,
Yeagertown. From 1950 until 1953 he taught driver education in the
Burnham-Derry Joint School District. From 1953 until 1954, he was
principal of the Burnham High School in Burnham and until 1968 he served
as assistant high school principal of Chief Logan High School in
Lewistown. From 1968 until 1979, he taught driver education in the
Mifflin County School District. He retired in 1979. Mr. Leader was a
member of the First United Methodist Church, Mount Union, where he was a
member of the Herman Smith Sunday School Class, served on the
administrative board, board of trustees and taught junior high Sunday
School and adult Sunday School classes. He was a member of the
Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees; Mount Union Masonic Lodge
No. 688, F&AM; served on Newton Hamilton Borough Council as president
and mayor of the borough and was a member of the Newton-Wayne Fire
Company, where he served as treasurer. He also served as president of
the former Mount Union Rotary Club. Funeral services will be held at
10:30 a.m. Friday, April 28, at the Daniel R. Myers Funeral Home,
Altoona, with the Rev. Dr. Kenneth Grundon and the Rev. Frank Oessenich
officiating. Interment will be made in the Alto Reste Park, Altoona. The

Catherine M. BENSON, 62, of 1028 Moore St., Huntingdon, died Wednesday,
April.26, 2000, at 10:p.m., at J.C.Blair Memorial Hospital, Huntingdon.
Born May 1, 1937, in Lewistown, she was the daughter of the late William
and Helen (Seibert) Bilheimer. She married Charles R. Benson June, 5,
1959, in Huntingdon. Mr. Benson survives at home. Three children
survive: William E. Benson Sr., Alexandria; Robin M. Bork, Spring Grove;
and Bryan R. Benson, Huntingdon. There are ten grandchildren and one
great-granddaughter. Two sisters, Betty Bilheimer of Huntingdon and Judy
Bumgardner of Lewistown, survive. Three brothers and two sisters
preceded her in death. Mrs. Benson was a member of the Free Methodist
Church, Huntingdon. She was a member of the Women of the Moose; Frank P.
Hommon Post No. 24, American Legion Auxiliary; Hook and Ladder Fire Com
pany Auxiliary, all of Huntingdon; and was a life member of the
Petersburg Catering Club. At one time she had worked for Technitrol in
Petersburg, but was primarily a homemaker. Funeral services will be held
Sunday, April 30, at 2 p.m., at the Free Methodist Church, Shadyside
Ave., Huntingdon, with the Rev. James Reed and the Rev. Joan Houck
officiating. Interment will be made in the Mt. Zion Lutheran Church

Beatrice M. KETNER, 60, of 10160 Cardinal Drive, Orrstown, died
Wednesday, April 26, 2000, in the Carlisle Hospital.
Born Jan. 4, 1940, in Mechanicsburg, she was the daughter of James W. and Ruth E.
(Heisey) Frank, the latter of whom survives in Mechanicsburg.
ln addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, D. Ronald
Ketner, two sons and two daughters: D. Wesley Ketner, Newville; Douglas M. Ketner,
Blairs Mills; Mrs. Allan (Karen E.) Mummert, Waynesboro; and Mrs. Dennis (Wanita K.)
Smith, Newville. There are eight grandchildren. One sister, Irene Frank of Dillsburg,
survives.
She was preceded in death by one daughter and one granddaughter.
Mrs. Ketner was a licensed practical nurse.
She was a member of the Green Spring Brethren in Christ Church and was a
member and former Sunday School teacher of the Good Samaritan Sunday
School Class.
A graduate of the former Messiah Academy, she received
her LPN training from the Altoona Vocational-Technical School.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 29, at 2 p.m., in the Green
Spring Brethren in Christ Church, with the Rey. Terry A. Burton
officiating. Interment will be made in the Newville Cemetery. Friends

Beulah A. Morningstar SHAWLEY, 88, a resident of Limestone Health
Facility in Athens, Ala., died Sunday, April 23, 2000.
Born Nov. 18, 1911, in Mapleton, she was the daughter of the late Joseph E. and
Bertha (McConahy) Dysart. She was first married to the late,. Fred M.
Morningstar, who had resided in Huntingdon. She later married Lewis a. Shawley
of Tyrone.
Surviving are three daughters and three sons: Carolyn Fae (Morningstar)
Reihart, Huntingdon; Constance L. (Morningstar) Port, Duncansville;
Mary E. (Shawley) Williams, Ardmore, Ala.; Dale E. Morningstar,
Hamilton, Ohio; David L. Shawley, Ardmore, Ala.; and Gary D. Shawley,
also of Ardmore. There are 17 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren,
two great- great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Shawley was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis D. Shawley; one son,
Stewart Allen Morningstar; four brothers; one granddaughter; a
great-granddaughter; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was the last surviving member. of her immediate family.
She was a member of the West Highland Baptist Church in Ardmore, Ala. She enjoyed
crocheting.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 25, in Alabama. Interment
was made in the Gatlin Cemetery, Ardmore.
Jack Charles FOOR, 64, of Indiana, died Wednesday, April 26, 2000, at
the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Pittsburgh.
Born March 29, 1936, in Broad Top, he was the son of the late Richard Ward and
Iva G. Black Foor.
Surviving are his wife, Marilyn Daugherty Foor, whom he
married Feb.14,1959. Also surviving are two daughters one one son: Mrs.
Thomas (Janice E.) Foister, of Home; Jacalyn A. Stitt, Indiana; and Joe
Charles, at home. There are three grandsons.
Also surviving are a sister, Mrs. Walter (Sue) Dudich, Hartville, Ohio;
and a brother, Richard W. Foor, of Kent, Ohio along with several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Foor was of the Methodist faith. He was a member of the VFW Post No.
1989; American Legion Post No. 141; BPOE Lodge No. 931; the YMCA; AARP;
and was a volunteerfor Special Olympics.
A peacetime veteran, he served, in the U.S. Army.
A 30-year employee of Penelec, he worked in the maintenance
department, retiring in 1992.
Friends will be received from 2 until 4 p.m. and from 7 until 9 p.m. Saturday
at the Bowser-Minich Funeral Home, Indiana, where a memorial service will be
conducted by the BPOE Lodge No. 931 Saturday, April 29, at 7 p.m.

Harvey D. HELMICK, 83, of 1769 Lebanon Road, Manheim, and formerly of
Harrisburg and Huntingdon, died unexpectedly Thursday, April 27, 2000,
at his home.
Born in Hendricks, W. Va., he was the son of the late Asa
and Ruth (Phillips) Helmick. He was married to Irene Louise Keller, who
preceded him in death in 1974, Helen Wilt, who preceded him in death
in 1986; and Katherine Maclin, who preceded him in death in 1999.
Surviving are a daughter, Anna Marie Werner, with whom he resided in Manheim;
a son, Joseph D. Helmick, Landisville; seven grandchildren and 13 great-grand-
children.
A brother, Bernard Helmick of Huntingdon, also survives.
He was preceded in death by two sons, Donald and Glenn.
Mr. Helmick was of the Baptist faith.
He was a lifelong member of the Harrisburg Motorcycle Club and a life member of the
William Grove Steam Engine Association.
During World War 11 he was enlisted in the Civil Conservation Corp. He
was employed as an automobile mechanic, retiring in 1967.
Charles E. HOOK, 62, of 701 Seventh St., Huntingdon, died Saturday,
April 29, 2000, at 10:37 a.m., at the Altoona Hospital, following a
brief illness. Born March 13, 1938, in Centre County, he was the son of
the late Ralph Elmer and Margaret Cathern (Packer) Hook. He married
Eileen M. Stitt Dec. 10, 1960, at the Assembly of God Church,
Huntingdon. The Rev. Edward Berkey officiated at the ceremony. Mrs. Hook
survives at home, along with three daughters: Mrs. Jeffrey (Connie Jean)
Weimer and Mrs. Charles (Patricia Kay) Bair, both of Huntingdon; and
Mrs. Gordon (Charlene) Garlock, McConnellstown. There are ten
grandchildren. Also surviving are a brother and three sisters: Ralph H.
Hook, Millheim; Mrs. William (Lois Jean) Knepp, State College; and Rose
Marie Hook and Linda Jane Hook, both of Millheim. He was a member of the
Emmanuel Bible Church, Huntingdon, R.D. 4. Mr. Hook had owned and
operated Charlie Hook Welding Service on the Petersburg Pike since 1972.
He was well known as a local businessman who enjoyed giving back to his
community. He was a long-time sponsor of the Huntingdon Horsemen's
Association events, sponsor of local racing at Hesston Speedway, and had
been an "Enabler" for PRIDE since its inception. He was educated in the
State College area public schools. He had resided at his Seventh Street
home for 33 years. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday,
May 3, at the Cutright-Speck Funeral Home, Huntingdon, with Pastor Greg
Harven officiating. Interment will be made in the Mooresville Cemetery,
Neffs Mills. Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 until 9 p.m.

Bertie E. DIBBLE, 85, formerly of Pogue, Three Springs, R.D., and most
recently of 5550 Cromwell St., Orbisonia, died at 5:55 p.m. Saturday,
April 29,2000, at the Woodland Retirement Center, Orbisonia. She had
been in failing health. Born March 20, 1915, in West Newton,
Westmoreland County, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Mary
(Knop) Hudock. She was united in marriage to Arthur D. Dibble May
6,1935, in New Castle. He preceded her in death April 30, 1997.
Surviving are two sons: Arthur D. Dibble, Beaver; and David A. Dibble,
Chattanooga, Tenn. There is one granddaughter. Also surviving are a
brother and two sisters: Joseph Hudock, Amelia Obley and LaVonne Harvey,
all of West Newton. An infant sister preceded her in death. Mrs. Dibble
attended the New Life Fellowship Church, Mount Union, R.D. 1. She
retired in 1974 after 20 years of service at Westinghouse Electric in
Beaver. She was a member of the National Campers and Hikers Association
and the Golden Eagles, a National Parks Senior Citizens Organization.

Earl Gene DOWDY, 70, of 17 Warm Springs Acres, Huntingdon, died
Saturday, April 29, 2000, at 1:26 p.m., at his residence. He had been in
failing health for the past four years. Born Nov. 2, 1929, in Knoxville,
Tenn., he was the son of the late Ramsey and Maude (Blalock) Dowdy. He
married Carolyn Hess Feb. 12, 1979, in Gainesville, Texas. Mrs. Dowdy
survives at home, along with nine children: Sarah Elizabeth Hess Dowdy,
at home; Betty Long, David Dowdy, Steve Dowdy and Janice Baker, all of
Knoxville, Tenn.; Helen Walker, Tulsa, Okla.; Ray Dowdy, Broken Arrow,
Okla.; Earline Hamby and Leonard Dowdy, both of Sacramento, Calif. There
are 21 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in
death by a son, Ronald Dowdy Jan. 27, 1987; and two brothers, Lewis Mize
and William Dowdy. Mr. Dowdy retired Jan. 19,1996, following many years
as an independent truck driver. He was a member of the Stone Church of
the Brethren, Huntingdon, and the Teamsters Union. He was educated in
the Knoxville public schools. Mr. Dowdy and his wife have resided in
Huntingdon since April 1, 1988, after moving from Moore, Okla. A
memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 2, at the Stone
Church of the Brethren, Huntingdon, with Pastors Dale and Christy Dowdy
officiating. Interment will be made at the Huntingdon Memorial Gardens.
Friends may call at the church Tuesday from noon until the hour of the
service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the
Stone Church of the Brethren, 17th and Moore streets, Huntingdon, Pa.

Doris S. HATFIELD, 81, of 18725 Meadowind Lane, Altoona, Fla., died
Saturday, April 29, 2000. Born in Huntingdon, she moved to central
Florida in 1988. Surviving are a daughter, Penny Hurley of Altoona,
Fla., and two sisters: Eunice S. Ward, Palmyra; and Marcia S.
Christopher, Leesburg, Fla. Mrs. Hatfield was of the Methodist faith and
was primarily a homemaker.
George R. LEIDY, 48, of Tyrone, R.D. 1, died Saturday, April 29, 2000,
at 4:55 a.m., at the James E. VanZandt VA Medical Center, Altoona. He
had been in failing health for the past two years. Born Jan. 7, 1952, in
Altoona, he was the son of Harry R. Leidy, who survives in Huntingdon,
and the late Anna L. (Baldauf) Leidy. He married Kathryn L. Hall April
10, 1976, at the Calvary Independent Baptist Church, Huntingdon, with
the Rev. Wilber Barber officiating. Mrs. Leidy survives at their
residence, along with one son and two daughters: G. Raymond Leidy Jr.,
Tyrone; Mrs. Jeff (Rebecca A.) Gaudette, Springfield, Mo.; and Mrs.
Keith (Elizabeth M.) Thompson, Petersburg. There is one grandson. Also
surviving are a brother and a sister: Harry R. Leidy Jr., Altoona; and
Mrs. William (Pat) Leipold, Boalsburg. Mr. Leidy was a member of the
Heritage Baptist Church, McConnellstown. He was a self-employed
carpenter for 10 years in the Alexandria and Huntingdon areas, more
recently employed as a carpenter for Fairfield Construction of Lititz
for four years. Mr. Leidy attended the Juniata Valley public schools and
graduated from the Juniata Valley High School in 1970. He had also
attended the Pennsylvania College of Technology in Williamsport. During
his service in the United States Marine Corps, he attained the rank of
corporal in the military police. He had been a resident of Huntingdon
County since birth and had lived at his current residence for 17 years.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing. A memorial service will be held
Saturday, May 13, at the Heritage Baptist Church, Route 26,
McConnellstown, at a time to be announced, with the Rev. Dennis L.
Allison officiating. Interment will be made in the Alexandria
Presbyterian Cemetery. Full military honors will be accorded at the
private graveside services. Friends may call prior to the memorial
service May 13. There will be no public viewing or visitation. Memorial
contributions may be made to the Heritage Baptist Church, Route 26,
McConnellstown, Pa. 16660; or to the American Cancer Society, Huntingdon
County Unit, R.D. 1, Box 33-D, Huntingdon, Pa. 16652. Funeral

John L. NEWMAN, 74, of Three Springs, R.D. 1, died at 3:30 a.m. Sunday,
April 30, 2000, at the home of his friends and caregivers, Rocky and
Tammy Souders of Valley Church Road, Hopewell. Born Aug. 8, 1925, in
Clay Township, Huntingdon County, he was a son of the late Lloyd and
Beulah (Curfman) Newman. He never married. Surviving are two, sisters:
Delilah E. Ebersole, Elizabethtown; and Lauretta M. Black, Newburg. Four
brothers and four sisters preceded him in death. Mr. Newman was of the
Protestant faith. He was employed as a lumberman and a sawmill operator.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 3, at the Martin
R. Brown Funeral Home, Orbisonia, with the Rev. Charles Rhodes
officiating. Interment will be made in the Wells Valley Methodist
Cemetery, Wells Tannery, R.D. Friends may call at the funeral home from
7 until 9 p.m. Tuesday and from 10 a.m. until the hour of the service on
Wednesday.
Ila RUSSEY, 92, a resident of The Oaks at Westminster Woods, Huntingdon,
formerly of Baltimore, Md., died Saturday, April 29,, 2000, at 8:,50
a.m., at Westminster Woods, following a long illness. Born April 23,
1908, in Prairie Ronde Township, Kalamazoo County, Mich., she was the
daughter of the late Sherman and Minerva (Roming) Fox. She was united in
marriage to Edward Carleton Russey June 18, 1929, at La Grange, Ind. Mr.
Russey preceded her in death Aug. 5, 1983. One son, William Edward
Russey of Huntingdon, survives, along with two grandchildren and one
great-grandchild. The last surviving member of her immediate family, she
was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters. Mrs. Russey was
primarily a homemaker. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern
Star, Grand Rapids, Mich.; and the Bou-Tem-Sci Club, an affiliate of
Shrine Temple, Baltimore, Md. She graduated from School Craft High
School in School Craft, Mich. She had been a resident of Huntingdon
since May 1994. She first lived at the Blair House for two years and for
the past four years at Westminster Woods. A graveside service will be
held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 3, at the Parkwood Cemetery in Baltimore,
Md., with the Rev. Peter Haynes officiating. Interment will be made in
the Parkwood Cemetery, Baltimore, Md. Funeral arrangements are under the
direction of the Cutright-Speck Funeral Home, Huntingdon.
Lorna A. CORNISH, 94, of Donahue Manor, Bedford, died Saturday, April
29, 2000, at 3:10 p.m., at the nursing home, following an extended
illness. Born July 14, 1905, in Six Mile Run, she was the daughter of
the late William and Clara Gertrude (Winfield) Cornish. She is survived
by a brother, Lloyd Cornish of Six Mile Run. She was preceded in death
by a sister and a brother, Ruth Wolfe and Eugene Cornish. Ms. Cornish
was a member of the Six Mile Run Church of God. She was a designer at a
wool factory in Cleveland, Ohio. She enjoyed playing the organ, drawing
and painting. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 3, at 1 p.m.,
at the Six Mile Run Church of God, with the Rev. Stanley Cordell
officiating. Interment will be made in the Duvall Cemetery, Six Mile
Run, R.D. Friends may call at the church from noon until the hour of the
service Wednesday. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the
D. Ronald Long Funeral Chapel, Saxton.
Merle F. LOGUE, 82, of 47 E. Second Ave., Lititz, died Sunday morning,
April 30, 2000, at the Brethren Village, following a lengthy illness.
Born in Indiana, he was the son of the late Arthur and Dorothy (White)
Logue. He was married to Bernice L. Dean for 39 years. Surviving along
with his wife are two sons and a daughter: Robert J. Logue and Stephen
D. Logue, both of Lititz; and Mrs. Arthur (Barbara B.) Hess, Hopewell.
There are eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. One sister,
Virginia Franke of Huntingdon, survives. Three brothers, Robert, Arthur
and Donald Logue, preceded him in death. Mr. Logue served in the U.S.
Army for 16 years, during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was a
truck driver with Interstate Motor Freight, retiring in December 1983.
He was a member of the Calvary Church in Lancaster and the Manheim
Veterans of Foreign War. Mr. Logue enjoyed hunting. Funeral services
were held Tuesday in Lititz.
