George C. COOK, 82, of Huntingdon, R.D. 3, died Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2001,
at the Veterans Home, Hollidaysburg, following an extended illness. Born
March 24, 1918, in Cooks, he was the son of Isaac and Pearl (Leader)
Cook. He was united in marriage to Louise H. Hall March 5, 1948, at the
15th Street United Methodist Church, Huntingdon, with the Rev. R.A.
Zimmerman officiating. Mrs. Cook survives at home. He is survived by a
daughter, Mrs. Leon (Eunice) Wible of Leesburg, Fla. There are four
grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Also surviving is a sister,
Mrs. Lottie Bollinger of Cooks. He was preceded in death by four sisters
and three brothers. Mr. Cook was a member of Cooks United Methodist
Church. He served with the United States Army at Camp Breckenridge, Ky.,
during World War II. Mr. Cook was first employed by the Joller Mine,
Cooks; then by the Shamokin Mine, Sunbury, and later by Owens Corning
Fiberglas, Huntingdon, for 16 years in the mat line department. He was
also employed by the Pennsylvania Railroad and the Huntingdon Machine
Shop, Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the
family. The Rev. Henry A. Theys will officiate. Funeral arrangements are
under the direction of the Robert E. Peters Funeral Home, Huntingdon.
Interment will be made in Cooks Cemetery. 

Blanche S. FREEMAN, 83, a resident of Westminster Woods, Huntingdon, and
formerly of 503 Madison Ave., Tyrone, died at 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 4,
2001, at Westminster Woods. Born Aug. 21, 1917, in Port Matilda, she was
the daughter of the late William L. and Beatrice (Patton) Singler. She
was united in marriage to James C. Freeman Sept. 15, 1937, in Cardiff,
Md. Mr. Freeman died Sept. 26, 1997. She is survived by a brother,
Reeder C. Singler of Bellwood. Also surviving is a friend and caretaker,
Kathy Kreider of Mount Union. She was preceded in death by two brothers
and an infant son. Mrs. Freeman was a member of the Church of the Good
Shepherd, Tyrone. She was a graduate of the Tyrone High School Class of
1935. She had retired from Westvaco, where she served as secretary to
John Criste. Mrs. Freeman was a member of the Tyrone Hospital Auxiliary
and the Ladies Auxiliary to the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen
Excelsior Lodge No. 219. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Jan.
6, at the Richard H. Searer Funeral Home Inc., with the Rev. Raymond T.
Brinson Jr. officiating. Interment will be made in the Grandview
Cemetery, Tyrone. 

Ruth E. SHAW, 80, a resident of Caledonia Manor Nursing Home,
Fayetteville for the last three years and formerly of Neelyton, died
Friday, Jan. 5, 2001, at 4 p.m., at Caledonia Manor. She was born Sept.
1, 1920, and was the daughter of the late Jesse R. and Idona (Piper)
Flood. She was united in marriage to Norman H. Shaw, Feb. 15, 1938. Mr.
Shaw preceded in death Nov. 17, 1970. She is survived by one son, Ralph
Shaw of Morrisville and three daughters, Evelyn Mellott of
McConnellsburg, Barbara Souders of Big Cove Tannery and Robin Miller of
Hustontown. Also surviving are eight grandchildren and several
great-grandchildren. One brother, Richard Flood Sr. of Mifflintown also
survives. She was preceded in death by one sister, Margaret Tice, one
brother, Robert Flood, one son, Robert Shaw and one grandson. She was of
the Protestant faith. Mrs. Shaw was a homemaker. Funeral services will
be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, at the Martin R. Brown Funeral
Home, Hustontown, with the Rev. Kenneth Cornelius officiating. Interment
will be made at the Hustontown Cemetery. 

LeRoy S. HICKS Sr., 85, of Three Springs, R.D. 1, died at 12:05 p.m.,
Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001, at his home in Clay Township, Huntingdon County.
Born April 25, 1915, in Saltillo, he was the son of the late William and
Ida (Kough) Hicks. He was united in marriage to Helen Park Dec. 25,
1940. Mrs. Hicks died Aug. 12, 1999. He is survived by a son, LeRoy
Hicks Jr. of Bealeton, Va. and a daughter, Virginia Hicks Ford of
Etters. There are nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He is
survived by a, sister, Virginia Stevens, and a brother, Billy Hicks,
both of Saitillo. He was preceded in death by two brothers. Mr. Hicks
served as deacon of the Calvary Independent Baptist Church of Saltillo.
He donated the supporting beams, cut from his farm, when the church's
building was constructed in 1951. He served as a Clay Township
supervisor and enjoyed playing baseball for the Saltillo baseball team
in his younger years. A forester for much of his life, he was employed
by the lumber companies of Monroe and Frank Crotsley and the
Pennsylvania Department of Forestry as a state forest ranger. Later he
worked for Owens- Corning Fiberglas Corp., Huntingdon. Funeral services
will be held at 11 a.m.Tuesday, Jan. 9, at the Calvary Independent
Baptist Church, Saltillo, with Pastor Tom Maurer officiating. Interment
will be made in the Saltillo Cemetery. 

Marjorie A. RICE, 76, of Box 111 A, James Creek, R.D. 1, and formerly of
Willoughby, Ohio, died Friday, Jan. 5, 2001, at the Altoona Hospital,
following a brief illness. She was born Jan. 3, 1925, in Painesville,
Ohio, the daughter of the late Clayton and Anna (Barrish) Johnson. She
was united in marriage to George Rice. Mr. Rice preceded her in death.
Surviving is one sister, Florence Belden of South Point, N.C., and a
niece, Elizabeth Lemin, of James Creek, with whom she resided. Two
sisters, Dorothy Sherman and Helen Palmer and a brother, Sonny Johnson,
preceded her in death. She was of the Methodist faith. She worked as a
waitress in Painesville, Ohio, and enjoyed sewing and reading. Funeral
arrangements are under the direction of the D. Ronald Long Funeral
Chapel, Saxton. Interment will be made in the Evergreen Cemetery,
Painesville, Ohio. 

George. E. YOHN, 73, of 1221 Walton Ave., Altoona, died Friday, Jan. 5,
2001, at the Altoona Hospital. He was born Aug. 12, 1927, in Huntingdon
County, the son of the late Lewis I. and Verna (Gingery) Yohn. He was
united in marriage to the former Eunice A Wilt, April 17, 1949. Mrs.
Wilt survives. Surviving are three children, Sharon A. Yohn of
Duncansville; Cheyrl Kay Boone of Chapin, S.C.; and Paul Yohn of
Hollidaysburg four grandhildren. Also surviving is one sister, Ferne
Bogden of Levittown and one brother, Charles W. Yohn of Juniata. Mr.
Yohn was a graduate of Altoona High School and Lock Haven State Teachers
College. He did graduate work at Penn State University. He served with
the United States Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theater for 18
months. He was a former teacher at the Bellwood- Antis High School. He
was also employed at the Butterick Company, Veeder Root and Evey
Footwear. He formerly owned and operated Blair Footwear, Items
International, Inc.,. and AirfWalk Footwear. Funeral services will be
held at 11 a.m. Monday, January 8, at the Mauk, & Yates Funeral Home,
Inc., Juniata, with the Rev. Elizabeth McCloskey officiating. Interment
was made in Grandview Cemetery. 

Richard P. SNYDER 75, of 70 Orchard Drive, New Martinsville, W. Va.,
died Jan. 6, 2001, at Ohio Valley Medical Center, Wheeling, W. Va. Born
Feb. 25, 1925, in Altoona, he was the son of the late Rev. Sheldon and
Mabel (Guyer) Snyder. He was united in marriage to Joyce Cummins of
Barree who survives. He is survived by eight sons and two daughters:
Richard P. Snyder Jr. of Summerville, S.C.; Stephen M. Snyder, Cindy A.
Kocher, Michael B. Snyder, Daniel J. Snyder, Robert M. Snyder and
Matthew C. Snyder, all of New Martinsville, W. Va.; Andrew T. Snyder of
Opelika, Ala.; David L. Snyder of Charleston, S.C. and Rebecca S.
Blankenship of Cleveland, Ohio. He is also survived by a brother, Roy B.
Snyder of Winona Lake, Ind. and two sisters, Doris Walter of Austin,
Texas and Audrey Wincovitch of Camp Hill. There are 17 grandchildren and
one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by a brother, Dale, and a
twin sister, Marjorie Kaiser. Mr. Snyder attended the First Baptist
Church, New Martinsville. He was a World War II veteran with the United
States Coast Guard and a member of the American Legion Post 28 and Moose
Lodge 931. Mr. Snyder was a graduate of Altoona High School and Juniata
College, Huntingdon. He was retired from Mobay Chemical Co. He served on
the New Martinsville, W. Va., city council for 13 years. He was on the
board of directors of the West Virginia Municipal League, a member of
the Greater New Martinsville Development Corp., a charter member of the
New Martinsville Main Street Program, a member of the Bel 0 Mar Board of
Directors, chairman of the New Martinsville Water and Sewer Board, and a
member and past president of the Mid-Ohio Valley Mayors'Association. He
received the River Heritage Days Citizenship Award and oversaw the
design of the New Martinsville city seal. Mr. Snyder was mayor of New
Martinsville, W. Va., from 1993 until present. A memorial service will
be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 10, at the First Baptist Church,
New Martinsville. W. Va. 

Rose A. SAVITTS, 66, of 127 First Diamond Road, Saxton, died at 1:05
a.m. Sunday, Jan. 7, 2001, at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, Huntingdon.
Born June 9, 1934, in Wood, she was the daughter of Harry A. and
Florence (McKnight) Buseck. She was united in marriage to John F.
Savitts June 13, 1951, in Breezewood, by the Rev. Corey Foor. Mr.
Savitts survives at home. She is survived by two daughters and two sons:
Loretta Miller and John C. Savitts, both of Saxton; Glen F. Savitts of
Dudley and Clara M. Stock of Martinsburg. She was preceded in death by a
daughter, Barbara Thomas: There are ten grandchildren and three
great-grandchildren. Also surviving is a sister, Vivian Cooper of
Saxton. Four sisters and three brothers; Alma Star, Sylvia Houck, Edna
Foor, Clara Buseck and Gerald, Arthur and Willis, preceded her in death.
Mrs. Savitts was of the Protestant faith. She was employed by
Owens-Corning Fiberglas, Huntingdon; Cove Shoe Factory, Martinsburg;
Petersburg Manufacturing and Elco Corp., Huntingdon. She was best known
as the owner-operator of The Country Squire Restaurant and Bar,
Defiance, along with her husband. Funeral services will be held at 8
p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 9, at the Robert E. Peters Funeral Home, Huntingdon,
with the Rev. Dean M. Thomas officiating. Interment will be made at the
Huntingdon Memorial Gardens, Huntingdon R.D, 1. 

Geary Dell BUNN, 94, of the Meadowview Manor Retirement Center,
McVeytown, formerly of 634 Fifth St., Huntingdon, died at 7:58 a.m.
Sunday, Jan. 7, 2001, at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, Huntingdon. His
death was unexpected. Born Aug. 21, 1906, in Huntingdon, he was the son
of the late George W. and Ella Barbara (Glick) Bunn., He was united in
marriage to Madelyn J. Shetrom of Huntingdon. Mrs. Bunn died Feb. 28,
1953. He. is survived by a number of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and
great-nephews. He was preceded in death by four brothers: Fred C. Bunn,
Robert J. Bunn, Wilbur E. Bunn, Howard N. Bunn, and several sisters. Mr.
Bunn was a member of the First Regular Baptist Church, Huntingdon. He
was the founder of Thousand Hill Hikers; charter member of the
Pennsylvania Sheriffs' Association; Mount Moriah Lodge No. 300 F & AM,
past chaplain; member and high priest of Standing Stone Royal Arch
Chapter No. 201; member and past commander of Huntingdon Commandery;
member of Nittany Council of Royal and Select Masters No. 57. He was
educated in the public schools of Huntingdon. Mr. Bunn was employed at
the Joseph F. Biddle Publishing Co. (The Daily News) as a shop foreman,
retiring in the 1970's. Following his retirement, he was employed by the
Borough of Huntingdon, working at Riverview Cemetery. He served in the
National Guard prior to World War II. Mr. Bunn was a native of
Huntingdon. He enjoyed the outdoors, hiking, hunting and fishing, flower
gardening and reading. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m.
Wednesday, at the John B. Brown Funeral Home, Huntingdon, with the Rev.
David D. Oldham officiating. Interment will be made in Riverview
Cemetery, 417 Washington St., Huntingdon. 

Dona P. FORD, 84, formerly of Saltillo, died at 6 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 7,
2001, at Chapel Pointe Health Center, Carlisle, where she had been
residing., Born May 6, 1916, in Saltillo, she was the daughter of the
late George and Gladyus (Bradley) Park. She is survived by a son, James
0. Ford of Fairporti N.Y. and a daughter, Joyce F. Book of
Mechanicsburg. There are six grandchildren. Also surviving are two
sisters and one brother, Doris Potts of Wheaton, Ill., Mona Hertz of
Orbisonia and George Park of Selinsgrove. She was preceded in death by
two brothers, Ronald and Craig. Mrs. Ford was a member of the Calvary
Independent Baptist Church, Saltillo. She was retired from the Southern
Huntingdon County School District as a school nurse after many years of
service. She was also a nurse at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital,
Huntingdon, and Fulton County Medical Center, McConnellsburg. Funeral
services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 10, at the Calvary
Independent Baptist Church, Saltillo, with Pastor Thomas Maurer and the
Rev. David Ford officiating. Interment will be made in the Saltillo
Cemetery. 

Dr. Donald M. FAUTH, 81, of Altoona, died Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2001, in
Dayton, Ohio. Born July 31, 1919, he was the son of the late Carl and
Anna Margaret Fauth. He is survived by a niece, Cheryl Randall and a
nephew, Donald Fauth. He was preceded in death by a brother, Jack, and a
half-brother, Brimm Ullery. Dr. Fauth previously practiced podiatry in
Huntingdon for nearly 30 years. He retired in 1979. He was most recently
employed by Rothrauff World Travel Service, Duncansville. Dr. Fauth was
a 1937 graduate of Altoona High School and attended the Chicago College
of Podiatry, where he graduated summa cum laude. He served as a medic
with the United States Air Force during World War II. While a resident
in Huntingdon, he was an active member of the Huntingdon Lions Club, the
Easter Seal Society and the March of Dimes. Memorial services will be
held at 5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, at the 28th Street Church of the
Brethren, Altoona. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of The
Good Funeral Home Inc., Alto-Reste Park Cemetery, Altoona. 

Beatrice M. (Cox) SNOOK, 80, of 237 Davis St., Mount Union, died Monday
morning, Jan. 8, 2001, at her home. Her death was unexpected. Born April
14, 1920, in Mount Union, she was the daughter of Edward and Catherine
(Drake) Cox. She was united in marriage to Orvis G. Snook Oct. 5, 1946.
Mr. Snook survives at home. She is survived by a daughter, Diane L.
Wilkinson of Mount Union. There are six grandchildren, five
great-grandchildren, two step-great-grandchildren and a nephew, Frank
Cox, who was reared in the home. She was preceded in death by a
daughter, Beverly A. Kester. Two sisters and four brothers preceded her
in death: Ora Waite, Hope Price, Glenn Cox, Burton Cox, Edward Cox and
James Cox. Mrs. Snook was a member of the First United Methodist Church,
Mount Union. She had been employed at one time by Harbison-Walker
Refractories, Mount Union, and the Mount Union Area School District. She
retired in 1973 after 30 years of service in the office of Dr. Merrill
Cunningham, Mount Union. She enjoyed spending time with her
grandchildren and great-grandchildren Funeral services will be held at
1:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 11, at the Robert D. Heath Funeral Home, Mount
Union, with the Rev. Dr. Kenneth Grundon officiating. Interment will be
made in the Mount Union Cemetery. 

Pellerino Frank "Wedio" Ambrosino, 80, of Allenport, Mount Union, R.D.
2, Box 629, died at appoximately 6..45 p.m., Jan. 8, 2001, at the
Altoona Hospital. Born Jan. 5, 1921, in Kistler, Mifflin County, he was
the son of the late Felucius and Teresina (Gragnano) Ambrosino. He was
united in marriage to Sonja Suders May 26, 1989. Mrs, Ambrosino survives
at home. He is survived by two stepsons, Darold E. Boone of Warrenton,
Va. and Karl D. Boone of Huntsville, Ala. There are five
stepgrandchildren. He is also survived by three sisters, Antoinette
Griffith, Angeline Blazevich and Mary Heidel, all of Mount Union. He was
preceded in death by the following siblings; Anella "Nellie" Imperioli, 
Rose DiFerdinando, Concetta, Frank and Carmen Ambrosino.
Mr. Ambrosino was a member of St. Catherine's Roman
Catholic Church, Mount Union, where he held a 4th Degree as a member of
the Knights of Columbus, St. Catherine of Sienna Council No. 6106, Mount
Union. He was a lifetime member of the Blue Juniata Veterans of Foreign
Wars Post No. 5754, Mount Union, the Simpson-Hunt Post No. 107, Mount
Union, and a member of the Newton-Wayne Lions Club. He was a 1941
graduate of Mount Union/High School. Mr. Ambrosino entered the U.S.
Marine Corps June 11, 1941. He served in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre
during World War II and received the following medals and commendations:
Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Service Medal, American Campaign
Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, WWII Victory Medal, Presidential
Unit Commendation Ribbon and Sharpshooter and Marksmenship Rifle Badges.
During his military service, he participated in the assault and capture
of the Gilbert Islands and of Okinama Shima, Ryukyu Islands. He attained
the rank of sergeant at the completion of his service April 12 1947. He
retired from the State Corrrectional Institution Huntingdon, as a
corrections officer in 1986, with 37 years of service. A funeral Mass
will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 12, at St. Catherine's Roman
Catholic Church, Mount Union, with Father Dennis Boggs officiating.
Interment will be made in the Garden of Honor, in the Mount Union
Cemetery. 

Benjamin D. RUNK, 76, of 152 Runk Lane, McVeytown, died at 4:55 p.m.
Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001, at the Huntingdon Manor Nursing Home, Huntingdon.
Born June 2, 1924, in Wayne Township, Mifflin County, he was the son of
the late Fred and Ruth Virginia (Miller) Runk. His wife, Elizabeth
"Betty" (Turbett) Runk, whom he married June 30, 1945, survives. Also
surviving are: children, Bernard D. Runk, Ashland, Va., Nancy E.
Gladfelter, Mill Creek, Kenneth S. Runk, El Paso, Texas; brother and
sister, Glen Runk, Eustis, Fla. and Freeda Baker, McVeytown RR1; seven
grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by
two brothers and a sister, Kenneth Runk, Luther Runk, and Helen Copley.
He was a United States Army veteran of World War II. He retired from E.
DeVecchis and Sons, State College in 1990 after 10 years of service. In
his early years, he began Ben's Coal Yard and Trucking Co. in Smithfield
and owned Ben's Restaurant and Diner 22 in Alexandria. He also worked at
Harbison-Walker Refractories, Mount Union. He then owned both the
Colonial Hotel and the Corner Room in Huntingdon and the Neu-Bridge
Restaurant in Mount Union for many years. He was a member of Wayne
United Methodist Church, McVeytown RR1. He was a life member of
Huntingdon VFW Post; a former member of Huntingdon Lions Club and the
Huntingdon Moose Lodge; and past president and member of the
Pennsylvania Restaurant Association. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m.
Saturday at the Robert D. Heath Funeral Home, Mount Union, with the
Charlie Rhodes officiating. Interment will be in the Wayne Cemetery,
McVeytown RR1. 

Mary (Ambrosino) HEIDEL, 74, a resident of Meadowview Manor, McVeytown,
R.D. 1, and formerly of Mount Union, R.D. 1, died at 5:54 a.m.
Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2001, at the Lewistown Hospital. Born March 24,
1926, in Mount Union, she was the daughter of the late Felice and
Theresa (Gragnano) Ambrosino. She was united in marriage to Jack E.
Heidel Dec. 19, 1947, at St. Catherine's Catholic Church, Mount Union.
Mr. Heidel died May 14, 1997. She is survived by a son, Frank E. Heidel
of Alabaster, Ala. There are two grandchildren. Also surviving are two
sisters, Antoinette Griffith and Angeline Blazevich, both of Mount
Union. She was preceded in death by the following brothers and sisters:
Pellerino "Wedio" Ambrosino, Anella "Nellie" Imperioli, Rose
DiFerdinando, Concetta Ambrosino, Frank Ambrosino and Carmen Ambrosino.
Mrs. Heidel was a member of St. Catherine's Roman Catholic Church, Mount
Union, and a member of the Catholic Daughters, Mount Union Chapter. She
was a graduate of, Mount Union High School. She was employed for over 20
years at L. Greif Brothers Manufacturing, Mount Union. A funeral Mass
will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, at St. Catherine's Roman
Catholic Church, Mount Union, with Father Elwood Figurelle officiating.
Committal will be made in Haven Rest Memorial Park, Shirleysburg, R.R. 1.

Johnnie TUMLIN, 68. of 414 Sixteenth Street. Huntingdon. died at 12:45
a.m. Friday, Jan. 12. 2001. at the Presbyterian Hospital, Pittsburgh.
Born Feb. 4. 1932 in Stockbridge, Ga., he was the son of the late George
and Louise (Evans) Tumlin. He was united in marriage to Delores "Lorrie"
(Hirth) Norris June 27, 1978. in Pittsburoh. Mrs. Tumlin survives at
home. He is survived by the following sons and daughters: Terry Tumlin
of Stockbridge, Ga., Tony Tumlin of Calhoun. Ga.. Cathy Thomas of
Virginia, Deb Hess, Jo Greenfield and Jim Norris. all of Huntingdon,
Pepper Norris and Ruthie Norris, both of Stockbridge, Ga., Cathy Bilich
of Smithfield Township, Huntingdon. and Harry Norris of Jonesboro. Ga.
There are 24 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. He was preceded
in death in 1989 by a son, Fent Norris. Also surviving is a sister,
Anita Langly of Marietta, Ga. Mr. Tumlin was a member of Jehovah's
Witnesses Kingdom Hall of Huntingdon. He attended Atlanta, Ga. area
public schools. Mr. Tumlin was employed as an electrician with Local No.
613, Atlanta. Ga. He retired in 1983. Mr. Tumlin enjoyed spending time
with his grandchildren. He had resided in his home on Sixteenth Street
since moving from Atlanta, Ga. Dec. 18. 1998. Funeral services will be
held at 2 p.m. Jan. 13 at the Cutright-Speck Funeral Home. Smithfield
Township, Huntingdon, with Mr. Frank Brooks officiating. Interment will
be made in the White Church Cemetery. 

Paul Wayne RICKEARD, 48, of 109 Wilmington. West Chester Pike, Kevin's
Sports Bar. Room 16, Chadds Ford, Concord Township, Deleware County,
died at 8:50 p.m. Jan. 9, 2001, at his residence. His death was
unexpected. Born Sept. 21, 1952. he was the son of the late Gordon R.
and Caroline (McClosky) Rickeard. He is survived by a daughter, Dawn
Rickeard, and two sons, Randy and Jonathan Rickeard. He is survived by a
brother, Gordon T. "Tim" Rickeard of Smithfield Township, Huntingdon,
and a sister. Nancy Ann Rickeard of Erie. He was preceded in death by a
sister, Jean Swope and a brother, Mark Rickeard. Mr. Rickeard was ot the
Catholic faith. He attended Huntingdon public schools and was a 1970
graduate of Huntingdon Area High School. He enjoyed the outdoors,
hunting and fishing. and was a collector of knives. A memorial service

William Bower BEATTY, 53, of 20 Walls Road, Mount Union, died at 11:40
a.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, while hunting in the Hill Valley area of
Huntingdon County with his son. Born Dec. 2, 1947, in Cromwell Township,
Huntingdon County, he was the son of the late Raymond B. and Rebecca
(Smith) Beatty. His wife, Dixie L. (Hollibaugh) Beatty, whom he married
Aug. 25, 1967, survives. Also surviving are: children, Jill L. Sarra,
Orbisonia and William D. Beatty, Greencastle; brothers and sisters,
Lucille Gaff of Mount Union RR1, Imogene Blatt of Mount Union, Barthol
Beatty, Loretta Lukens, and Cloyd Beatty, all of Aliquippa, and Patricia
Bidinger of Columbia, Md.; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in
death by a brother, Duane Beatty. He was a 1965 graduate of Captain Jack
High School and a 1967 graduate of Williamsport Community College. He
spent 9 years in the United States Army Reserves at Huntingdon. He was a
supervisor at Case New Holland, Belleville, where he was employed for
over 31 years. He attended Rockhill Church of the Brethren. He was a
member of McVeytown Lodge F&AM 376; the Altoona Consistory; the Standing
Stone Royal Arch Chapter 201, Huntingdon; the Huntingdon Commandry 65
Knights Templar; the Huntingdon County Shrine; and the Jaffa Temple,
Altoona. He also helped organize the first chapter of the Order of
Demolay in McVeytown; served as a cubmaster and an assistant scoutmaster
for Troop 78, Newton Hamilton; and a member of the Order of the Arrow,
Brotherhood Rank of the National Boy Scout Association. He was very
active in youth baseball having helped organize the minor league and
coached in the teener league. He was an avid sportsman, especially
enjoying hunting, fishing, and golf. He was a member of the American
League and the United States Golf Associations. Services will be held at
2 p.m. Tuesday, at the Robert D. Heath Funeral Home, Mount Union, with
the Rev. Nancy Rogers officiating. Interment will be in Haven Rest
Memorial Park, Shirleysburg RR1. 

Dorothy E. PANDOLFINO, 78, formerly of 805 1/2 Mifflin St., Huntingdon,
more recently of Huntingdon, R.D. 2, died Thursday, Jan. 11, 2001, at
8:02 p.m., at Westminster Woods, Huntingdon, Born Sept. 25, 1922, in
Mill Creek, she was a daughter of the late Calvin and Minnie (Snack)
Baird. She was united in marriage to Frank A. Pandolfino Oct. 25, 1941,
at St. Catherine's Catholic Church in Mount Union. He preceded her in
death May 28, 1989. Surviving are the following children: Sandra
Pandolfino, Alexandria; Frank Pandolfino Jr., Huntingdon, R.D. 2; Mrs.
Herve (Karen) Glorioso, Huntingdon; Dee Shope, Huntingdon R.D. 2; James
Pandolfino, Huntingdon, R.D. 4; and Dennis Pandolfino, Gold Hill, N.C.
There are 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She was
preceded in death by a grandson, Brian Shope. One sister, Geraldine
Sheffield of Huntingdon, R.D., and a brother, Theodore Baird of Altoona,
survive. Two sisters, Shirley Sarvis and Beverly Baird and two brothers,
George "Bud" Baird and John Baird, preceded her in death. Mrs.
Pandolfino was a member of the Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church in
Huntingdon. She was a homemaker. A memorial service will be held at the
Robert E. Peters Funeral Home, Huntingdon, Tuesday, Jan. 16, at 1 p.m.,
with the Rev. James L. Blair and the Rev. George "Buddy" Baird
officiating. A funeral of Liturgy will be held at the Most Holy Trinity
Catholic Church in Huntingdon Tuesday, at 2 p.m., with the Rev. David J.
Arseneault officiating. Interment will be made in the Huntingdon
Memorial Gardens, Huntingdon, R.D. 1. 

Hazel P. WALKER, 87, of R.D. 2, Box 423, Allenport, Mount Union, died at
5:25 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, at the J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital,
Huntingdon. Born July 3, 1913, in Elkins, W.Va., she was the daughter of
the late Arthur and Clara (Spiker) Miller. She was united in marriage to
the Rev. Paul R. Walker March 28, 1937, in Uniontown. He preceded her in
death Feb. 2, 1982. Surviving are the following children: David Walker,
Hawthorn; Paul Walker Jr., Mount Union; James Walker, Oak Ridge; Daniel
Walker, McVeytown, R.D. 1; Pauline Short, Waynesboro; Twila Horstick,
Mechanicsville, Md.; Darlene Cocca, Prescott, Ariz., Hazel Mills, White
Plains, Md.; and Aida Rockey, Enola. There are a number of grandchildren
and great-grandchildren. One son, Elvin Walker, preceded her in death.
Four sisters survive: Delcie Roach, Yorktown, Va.; Alice George and
Gladys Miller, both of Uniontown; and Amy Miller, Ohio. Two sisters and
four brothers preceded her in death. Mrs. Walker was an ordained
minister and had been an evangelist with the Church of God for many
years, primarily in the Maryland, West Virginia and Pennsylvania areas.
She was a member of the New Life, Fellowship Church, Mount Union, R.D 1.
The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 17, at
the New Life Fellowship Church, Mount Union, R.D. 1, with Pastor Dayton
Sines officiating. Interment will be made in the Haven Rest Memorial
Park, Shirleysburg, R.R. 1. 

Arthur E. ERWIN, 85, of Three Springs. died at 9:15 a.m. Saturday, Jan.
13, 2001, at the Woodland Retirement Center, Orbisonia. Born Aug. 29,
1915, in Cromwell Township, Huntingdon County, he was a son of the late
William H. and Bertha M. (Flasher) Erwin. He was united in marriage to
Freda L. Brown Sept. 23, 1950, in Everett. Mrs. Erwin survives at the
retirement center in Orbisonia. The last surviving member of his
immediate family, he was preceded in death by a sister, Laura M. Hann,
and three brothers, John R. Erwin, Walter L. Erwin and James S. Erwin.
At one time, Mr. Erwin attended the First United Methodist Church in
Three Springs. He was a member of the Madden-Wennick Post No. 518
American Legion, Rockhill Furnace, and Standing Stone Post No. 1754 VFW,
Huntingdon. He retired from the Heavy Construction Carpenters Union No.
2274, Pittsburgh. Mr. Erwin was a veteran of World War II, serving in
the U.S. Army. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 16,
at the Martin R. Brown Funeral Home, Orbisonia, with the Rev. Eric
Lingenfelter officiating. Interment will be made at the Three Springs
Cemetery. 

Belle L. Lane WEIKEL, 87, of Creek Drive, Lewistown, died at 5:25 a.m.
Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, at Lewistown Hospital. Born Aug. 18, 1913, in
Cassville, she was the daughter of the late Clem and Ida Bowman. Her
first husband, Harvey A. Lane, died May 31, 1953 and her second husband,
Foster Weikel, died Nov. 8, 1987. Surviving are: children, Mrs. William
(Shirley) Hamman and Harvey D. Lane, both of McVeytown and Carol Palm,
McConnellstown; sisters and brothers, Martha Witters, Philipsburg, Sara
Bousum, Mapleton, Mrs. William (Mary) States, McConnellstown, James
Bowman, Shirleysburg and Alex Bowman, Easton; 14 grandchildren; 26
great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren. She was
preceded in death by a daughter, Ella O'Donnell; an infant son, Terry
Lane; two brothers, Fred Bowman and Milton Bowman; a grandson, Randy
Wertz; and a granddaughter, Tina Kearns. She was a homemaker. Services
will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Harshbarger Funeral Home, 3
South Market St., McVeytown, with the Rev. Donald E. Peters Jr.
officiating. Interment will be in Cornelius Chapel Cemetery, Mapleton. 

Mary "Mayme" Rosamond RUDY, 79, formerly of R.D. 1, Box 162, Neffs
Mills, Petersburg, died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001, at 12:20 a.m., at the
University Park Nursing Center, State College, where she had resided
since September. Born Aug. 26, 1921, in Olean, N.Y., she was a daughter
of the late William E. and Mildred A. (Torey) Crandell. She was united
in marriage to Ralph A. Rudy Oct. 6, 1961. Mr. Rudy survives at home,
along with the following children: Robert Eugene Rudy, Frederick, Md.;
Lauretta Cline, Fairfield; and Terry L. Rudy, Petersburg. There are nine
grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. An infant son preceded her in
death. Also surviving are two step-daughters and two step-sons: Shirley
Northop of California, Connie Kulman of Bellefonte, Stanley Rudy of
Maryland and Robert A. Rudy of State College. Three brothers and two
sisters survive: Richard Crandell, Eldred; James W. Crandell, Boalsburg;
Thomas C. Crandell, Loveland, Colo.; Suzanna J. Crook of State College;
and Leanne Russell, Coudersport. She was preceded in death by two
brothers and one sister. Mrs. Rudy had worked for a number of years as a
cook at Sigma Chi Fraternity in State College. She was of the
Presbyterian faith. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and
was especially fond of reading and sitting in her back yard. She moved
to the Juniata Valley area in 1962 and had resided at her Neffs Mills
home since 1974. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday,
Jan. 17, at the Cutright-Speck Funeral Home, Juniata Valley Chapel, 412
Main St., Alexandria, with the Rev. Robert Cauffman officiating.
Interment will be made in the Mooresville Cemetery. 

Mary C. BLACK, 83, of Donahoe Manor, Bedford, formerly of Defiance, died
unexpectedly Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, at 2 a.m., at the manor. Born Feb.
10, 1917, in Robertsdale, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and
Mary (Ryan) Lover. She was united in marriage to Woodrow W. Black Dec.
31, 1938, in Dudley. He preceded her in death Nov. 20, 1988. Surviving
are the following children: Michael Black, Akron, Ohio; Mary Rose
Dubetz, Manheim; Robert Black, Saxton; Carol Mearkle, Clearville; Thresa
Imler, Manheim, and Susan Dickson, Saxton. There are 19 grandchildren
and 17 great-grandchildren. One grandson preceded her in death. Also
surviving are the following brothers and sisters: Helen Attardi,
Charlottesville, Va.; Ann Lover, Verna Hoffman and Josephine Lover, all
of Huntingdon; and Susan Peters, Calvin. Five brothers and one sister
preceded her in death: John, Michael, George, Joseph, Leslie and
Elizabeth. Mrs. Black was a member of the Immaculate Conception Parish
in Dudley, where she was active in the Rosary Society. She was primarily
a homemaker. A funeral Mass will be held Tuesday, Jan. 16, at 10 a.m.,
at the Immaculate Conception Church, Dudley, with the Rev. Patrick
Leahey officiating. Interment will be made in the Ave Maria Cemetery,
Dudley. 

Shirley A. DAVENPORT, 64, of Pennsville, N.J., died Saturday, Jan. 13,
2001, in the Memorial Hospital of Salem County, Mannington Township.
Born in Mount Union, she was the daughter of the late Ira and Sarah
(Diven) Prough. She married Joseph Davenport Sept. 14, 1956. Mr.
Davenport survives, along with three daughters and a son: Lori Lynn
Schaffer, Salem, N.J.; Debra Mary Kuhns, Pennsville, N.J.; Tara
Elisabeth Mauler, at home; and Scott Joseph Davenport, Toms River, N.J.
There are four grandchildren. One brother, Robert Prough of Mount Union,
survives. Mrs. Davenport graduated from Captain Jack High School in
Mount Union in 1954, and from Goldey Beacom School of Business in 1955.
She managed Kids Korner from 1978-1982. She was a member of the Trinity
United Methodist Church, where she was a Sunday School teacher. She was
also a member of the Pennsville Democrat Club, S.J. Lupus Fund and TOPS,
where she was a former state queen. She enjoyed reading, playing cards
and swimming. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 18,
at the Trinity United Methodist Church, 5 Broadway and Church streets,
Pennsville, N.J. Interment will be private at the Lawnside Cemetery in
Pilesgrove Township. 

Russell C. PARSON, 89, of Route 1, Blairs Mills, died Monday morning,
Jan. 15, 2001, at his home in Tell Township, Huntingdon County. Born
Sept. 11, 1911, in Tell Township, Huntingdon County, he was a son of the
late Harper and Faye (Hockenberry) Parson, He was married to Evelyn E.
Burd Nov. 25, 1933. Mrs. Parson survives at home, along with two
children: Catherine F. Wyant of Route 1, Blairs Mills, and Carl W.
Parson, Honey Grove. There are six grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren
and three great-great-grandchildren. One daughter, Ruth Towsey, preceded
him in death. Three sisters: Hilda Gibbons of Blairs Mills, R.D., Dolly
Love of East Waterford, and Thelma Johnson of Blairs Mills, R.D.,
survive. Five brothers are deceased. Mr. Parson was a member of the
Nossville United Methodist Church, Blairs Mills, R.D. He also belonged
to the Blairs Mills Sportsman's Association. He was a farmer for most of
his life. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 18, at
the Martin R. Brown Funeral Home, Orbisonia, with the Rev. Virginia
Eminhizer officiating. Interment will be made in the Nossville Cemetery,
Blairs Mills RD. 

Edward KYLE, 55, of Lehigh Acres, Fla., died Jan. 14, 2001. Born in
Huntingdon, he moved to Florida in 1974. Surviving are two daughters,
Heather May Kyle of Fort Myers, Fla., and Stephanie Holbein of
Pennsylvania. There is one grandson. Two sisters and four brothers
survive: Dolly Ranck of Mount Union and Bonnie Morningstar of Huntingdon
County, James H. Kyle III and James Ardrey of Georgia, and Jeffery Kyle
of Virginia. He was preceded in death by family members Dora Werner,
Samuel and Ross Ardrey. Funeral services will be held in the chapel of
the Anderson Funeral Home of Lehigh Acres Friday, Jan. 19, at 11:30
a.m., with the Rev. Robert Moore. officiating. Interment will be made in
the Lee Memorial Park. 

Elmira Edith CELLA, 92, of Spruce Creek, formerly of Allensville, died
Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2001, at home. Born Sept. 27, 1908, in Allensville,
she was a daughter of the late James and Anna Orietta Bordell Welfley.
She married Joseph Cella, who died Aug. 30, 1968. She was a homemaker.
She taught Sunday school and played the piano at Spruce Creek United
Methodist Church. She was also a member of Allensville Lutheran Church.
She is survived by a daughter, Ruth E. Myers of Spruce Creek; a son,
Joseph A. of Huntingdon; a sister, Martha Steele of Huntingdon; six
grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Two sisters and a brother
preceded her in death. Private funeral services will be held at the
convenience of the family. Burial will be in Franklinville Cemetery. 

Samuel Walter LEABHART Jr., 86, of Snake Spring Township, formerly of
Broad Top, died at 7:40 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2001, at Pennknoll
Village, Snake Spring Township, where he resided for the past 15 years.
His death was unexpected. Born March 31, 1914, in Broad Top City, he was
the son of the late Samuel Walter and Jane (Jones) Leabhart. One sister,
Mrs. William (Gayle) Reed of Bedford, survives. He was preceded in death
by two sisters and two brothers: Mrs. Oran (Alice) Turner, Mrs. Rush
(Aida) Mateer, John Leabhart and Glenn Leabhart. Mr. Leabhart was
employed as a night watchman as the Masonic Home in Elizabethtown. He
retired from the Treasury Department in Harrisburg as a mechanic. He was
a lifetime member of the Broad Top United Methodist Church. During World
War II, he served as a private in the U.S. Army. He was a member of The
Masons and Shrine in the Harrisburg area. Funeral services will be held
at the Broad Top United Methodist Church at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 19, with
Pastor Barbra Berg officiating. Interment will be made at the Broad Top
IOOF Cemetery. 

Karen Irene WALKER, 44, of 410 Second St., Huntingdon, died Wednesday,
Jan. 17,2001, at 6 p.m., at Huntingdon Manor Nursing Home, following an
extended illness. Born June 11, 1956, in Huntingdon, she was the
daughter of the late James Edward Walker, who preceded her in death Aug.
15, 1978, and Alice R. (Stouffer) Walker, who survives in Huntingdon.
Three sisters survive: Mrs. Carl (Betty) Brindle, Rockville, Md.; Mrs.
Charles (Emma Jane) Smith, Hyattsville, Md.; and Mrs. Richard (Donna)
Godard, Williamsport. Miss Walker was a member of Calvary Independent
Baptist Church, Huntingdon. She had lived at her Second Street residence
since birth. She enjoyed listening to music, coloring and loved M&Ms. A
funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 19, at the Calvary
Independent Baptist, Churcth 300 Standing Stone Ave., Huntingdon, with
the Rev. Dr. Thomas C. Coleman officiating. Interment will made in
Huntingdon Memorial Gardens. Huntingdon, R.D. 1. 

Clarence H. APPLEBY, 93, formerly of Hustontown, died at 4:24 a.m.
Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001, at Caledonia Manor, Fayetteville. Born March 3,
1907, in Dublin Township, Huntingdon County, he was a son of the late
James and Jane (Henry) Appleby. He was married to Vera J. Locke Oct. 29,
1936. Mrs. Appleby preceded him in death Oct. 25, 1992. Surviving are
four children: Donald L. Appleby of Greencastle; Clarence Terry Appleby,
Star Route, Hustontown; Larry R. Appleby of Greencastle and Sandra K.
Cisney of Rockhill Furnace. There are nine grandchildren and 12
great-grandchildren. Mrs. Appleby was preceded in death by two sisters
and three brothers: Laura Covert, Priscilla Fraker, Bruce Appleby,
Charles Appleby and John Appleby. Mr. Appleby was a member of the Clear
Ridge United Methodist Church, Hustontown, R.D. A former member of the
IOOF Lodge in Hustontown, he had been a Boy Scout leader in Hustontown.
He also served as former director of the Northern Fulton Burial
Association and was a member of the Hustontown Volunteer Fire Company.
He had worked as a coal miner, farmer and logger. He retired from
PennDOT after eight years of service. Funeral services will be held at 1
p.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, at the M.R. Brown Funeral Home, Hustontown.
Interment will be made at the Hustontown Cemetery. 

Carl J. SNYDER, 75, of HCR 61, Box 42, Blairs Mills, died Wednesday,
Jan. 17, 2001, at 1:55 p.m., at Locust Grove Retirement Village,
Mifflin. Born Oct. 3, 1925, in Johnstown, he was the son of the late
Blair and Mildred (Ale) Snyder. He was united in marriage to Dorothy A.
Burdge Aug. 31, 1949. Mrs. Snyder survives at the retirement village.
Five children survive: Gary B. Snyder of Blairs Mills, Patricia L. Hardy
of Mifflintown, Patrick L. Snyder of Shade Gap, Robert A. Snyder of East
Waterford, and Delores A. Herzberg of Blairs Mills. There are eight
grandchildren. One granddaughter preceded him in death. One sister,
Betty Brallier of Johnstown, survives. Two sisters are deceased. Mr.
Snyder was employed as a quality control inspector at Letterkenny Army
Depot in Chambersburg for 38 years, retiring in 1980. During World War
II, he served in the U.S. Navy. He was a member of the Upper Tuscarora
Presbyterian Church in Waterloo, Shade Gap Fire Company, and was a
former member of the Blairs Mills Lions Club and the American Legion.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Jan. 20, at 11 a.m., at the
Richvale United Methodist Church, Richvale, with the Rev. Virginia
Eminhizer and the Rev. R. Bruce Shannon officiating. Interment will be
made in the Upper Tuscarora Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Waterloo. 

Raymond Earl WHELAND, 68, of R.D. 1, Box 577, Centre Hall, died
Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001, at Centre Community Hospital, State College.
His death was unexpected. Born Jan. 20, 1932, in Seven Stars, he was the
son of the late Roy E. and Helen E. (Johnson) Wheland. He was united in
marriage to Lenore (Grace) Walker Aug. 3, 1956, in West Virginia. She
preceded him in death Jan. 31, 1999. Surviving are a daughter and two
sons: Crystal Stitzer of Aaronsburg; Allen Wheland of Mesa, Ariz.; and
Kenneth Wheland, Wilmington, N.C. One son preceded him in death. Also
surviving are a sister and six brothers: Shirley Rodland of Warriors
Mark, Melvin Wheland of Bellwood, Clyde Wheland of Palmyra, Lynn Wheland
of Tyrone, Leon Wheland of Warriors Mark, Harvey Wheland of Tennessee
and Larry Wheland of Maryland. Two sisters and two brothers are
deceased. Mr. Wheland worked for area construction contractors for 40
years, retiring in 1993. Funeral services will be held Sunday, Jan. 21,
at 2 p.m., at the Bruce E. Cox Funeral Home, Warriors Mark, with Pastor
Gregory Lake officiating. Interment will be made in the Seven Stars
Cemetery. 

Warren T. SHREVE, 79, a resident of The Oaks at Westminster Woods,
Huntingdon, formerly of Ambler, died Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001, at 3:55
p.m., at The Oaks, following an extended illness. Born Oct. 9, 1921, in
Overbrook, he was the son of the late William Henry and Florence
(Thomas) Shreve. He was united in married to Anne Elizabeth Claville,
who preceded him in death Oct. 6, 1991. Surviving are four sons: Robert
C. Shreve of Quakertown, William H. Shreve of Huntingdon, Barry W.
Shreve of South Carolina, and Scott T. Shreve of Schaefferstown. There
are nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Mr. Shreve was the last
surviving member of his immediate family. He was of the Protestant faith
and a member of.the Amateur Radio Club in Huntingdon. A graduate of
Overbrook High School, he received his degree in electrical engineering
in 1943 from the Pennsylvania State College, now Pennsylvania State
University. He worked as an electrical engineer, retiring in 1986.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theater
of Operations, attaining the rank of lieutenant and serving aboard the
USS Dehaven. Mr. Shreve had resided at his current residence since
August 1997. He enjoyed gardening, amateur radio and sailing. A private
graveside family service will be held at the convenience of the family,
with the Rev. David Hess officiating. Interment will be made in the
Huntingdon Memorial Gardens, Huntingdon. 

James V. LILLY, 82, of 1025 Pike St., Huntingdon, died at 9:20 p.m.
Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001, at The Oaks at Westminster Woods Retirement
Center, Huntingdon. He was born June 7, 1918, in Huntingdon, the son of
Francis J. and Mary A. (Williams) Lilly. He was married to Virginia Long
in 1947, at St. Matthews Catholic Church, Tyrone, with Father John
O'Mallay officiating. Mrs. Lilly survives at their home. Two sons and
three daughters survive: T. Michael Lilly of Riverside, Calif.; Stephen
P. Lilly of Schwenksville; Suzanne M. Lilly of Plymouth Meeting; Mrs.
George (Christine E.) Sayer of Woodstown, N.J.; and Mrs. Patrick
(Barbara A.) Kiral of Camp Hill. There are eight grandchildren. Three
sisters and one brother also survive: Vera Hartman of Harrisburg;
Patricia Lewis of Wilmington, Del.; John Richard Lilly of Barling, Ark;
and Jean Fagan of Marysville. Mr. Lilly was a member of Most Holy
Trinity Catholic Church, Huntingdon. He attended Harrisburg area
Catholic schools and graduated from Harrisburg Catholic High School
(currently Bishop McDivitt High School) in the Class of 1936. He served
with the U.S. Army 4th Infantry Division, 4th Signal Corps, during World
War II in the European Theatre of Operations, attaining the rank of
master sergeant. He was the recipient of the Purple Heart medal. Mr.
Lilly retired from Owens Corning Fiberglas in 1983 after 33 years of
service. He was a resident of his current home since 1956. He was a life
member and past commander of the Standing Stone Veterans of Foreign Wars
Post 1754 in Huntingdon, a life member of the Smithfield Township
Volunteer Fire Company and a life member and past captain of the
Smithfield Township Fire Police. In his spare, time, he enjoyed
photography, model railroading, steam locomotives and civil aviation. A
funeral Mass will be celebrated at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church,
Sixth and Washington streets, Huntingdon, at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 22.
The Rev. Father David J. Arseneault will officiate. Interment will be
made in Holy Cross Cemetery, Huntingdon. 

Margaret E. ROSS, 86, formerly of Huntingdon, R.D. 1, and DeForrest
Apartments, Huntingdon, died Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001, at 4 p.m., at
Huntingdon Manor, Huntingdon. Born Jan. 29, 1914, in Woodbury Township,
Blair County, she was the daughter of the late Mervin C. and Grace
(Sparr) Acker. She was united in marriage to Homer F. Ross June 18,
1937, at Yellowstone National Park. He preceded her in death March 30,
1973. Two sisters, Ethel B. Thompson of HCR 61, Mill Creek, and G. Marie
Thompson of Harrisburg, survive. One step-son, Ivan R. Ross, and a
brother, Melvin B. Garner, preceded her in death. Mrs. Ross was a member
of the Mt. Zion Lutheran Church, Huntingdon, R.D. 3. She was a member of
the auxiliaries to the Loyal Order of Moose, Huntingdon; Frank P. Hommon
Post No. 24, American Legion; Standing Stone Post No. 1754, VFW, and
World War I Veterans, Juniata Valley Barracks. She was primarily a
homemaker. Funeral services will be held Monday, Jan. 22, at 10:30 a.m.,
at the Robert E. Peters Funeral Home, Huntingdon, with the Rev. Richard
L. Shakespeare officiating. Interment will be made in the Mt. Zion
Lutheran Church Cemetery, Huntingdon, R.D. 3. 

Martha (Earnest) BOWMAN, 87, a resident of The Oaks at Westminster Woods
Retirement Center, Huntingdon, formerly of 1516 Mifflin St., Huntingdon,
died Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, at 6:30 p.m., at the retirement center. Born
Sept. 12, 19l3, in Huntingdon, she was the daughter of the late Frank P.
and Verna (Sager) Earnest. She was united in marriage to Henry C. Bowman
Sept. 12, 1942, at the First United Methodist Church in Huntingdon. He
preceded her in death March 19, 1959. One son, Stephen E. Bowman of
Boalsburg, survives, along with two grandsons. A half-sister, Mrs.
George M. (Mae McDonald) Simpson, preceded her in death. Mrs. Bowman was
a member of the First United Methodist Church, Huntingdon. She attended
the Huntingdon public schools, graduated in 1931 from Huntingdon High
School and from Juniata College in 1935. She worked as a teacher in the
Huntingdon Area School District for 30 years, primarily in the fifth
grade at Alfarata Elementary School. Mrs. Bowman was a member of the
American Association of University Women; Women's League of Juniata
College; was active in Juniata College alumni activities; volunteered
for Meals-on-Wheels; was a member of the Friends of the Huntingdon
County Library; past member of the Huntingdon County Children's Services
Board; and the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees. She had been
a lifelong resident of Huntingdon County and enjoyed extensive world
travel in her retirement years. A funeral service will be held
Wednesday, Jan. 24, at 1:30 p.m., at the John B. Brown Funeral Home,
Huntingdon, with the Rev. Doyle H. Klinger Jr. officiating. Interment
will be made in the Riverview Cemetery, Huntingdon. 

Frances M. LEONARD, 85, of Ore Street, Rockhill Furnace, died Sunday
morning, Jan. 21, 2001, at the J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, Huntingdon.
Born Aug. 6, 1915, in Johnstown, she was the daughter of the late Arthur
and Frances (Lake) Devlin. She was united in marriage to Wilbur S.
Rogers in 1932, in Shirleysburg. He preceded her in death July 1946. She
later married Blaine L. Leonard July 1968. He preceded her in death Feb.
16,1998. Surviving are four daughters and three sons: Helen Stake,
Rockhill Furnace; Mary Ann Ansell, Orbisonia; Linda Mallory, Billerica,
Mass.; Lucinda Snyder, Orbisonia; William Rogers, Lewistown; Richard
Rogers, St, Thomas; and Howard Rogers, Beaumont, Texas. There are 13
grandchildren. 11 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Two step-daughters and one step-son survive: Linda Leonard, Hughesville;
Rosalita Leonard, Elgin, Ill.; and Sheldon Leonard, Mount Union. A twin
sister, Helen G. Laird of Beaver Falls, survives. Six brothers and one
sister preceded her in death. Mrs. Leonard was a member of the
Bunkertown Church of the Brethren, McAlisterville, R.R. 1. She was
primarily a homemaker. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m.
Wednesday, Jan. 24, at the Martin R. Brown Funeral Home, Orbisonia, with
Pastor Len Smith and Pastor Nancy Rogers officiating. Interment will be
made in the IOOF Cemetery, Rockhill. 

Ruth Louise (McElwain) WALKER, 79, of 204 Standing Stone Ave.,
Huntingdon, died Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, at 1:20 p.m., at Ohesson Manor,
Lewistown. Born Feb. 7, 1921, in Huntingdon, she was the daughter of the
late William L. and Winnie (White) McElwain. She was united in marriage
to Raymond "Joker" Walker Sept. 20, 1941, in Winchester, Va. He preceded
her in death Sept. 19, 2000. Surviving are a son and a daughter: Mrs.
William (Sharon) Monihen of Huntingdon and Alan R. Walker of Chaffee,
N.Y. There are five grandchildren. The last surviving member of her
immediate family, Mrs. Walker was preceded in death by two sisters and a
brother: Mabel E. Leonard, Helena McElwain and Clark McElwain. Mrs.
Walker was of the Protestant faith. She retired in 1984 from Juniata
College as a secretary after 18 years of service. She was previously
employed by Owens Corning Fiberglas. Mrs. Walker attended the Huntingdon
public schools and was a 1938 graduate of Huntingdon High School. A
resident of Huntingdon County since birth, she had lived at her current
residence since January 1951. A funeral service will be held Tuesday,
Jan.. 23, at 1 p.m. at the John B. Brown Funeral Home, Huntingdon, with
the Rev. Doyle H. Klinger Jr. officiating. Interment will be made in the
Donation Cemetery, Oneida Township. 

Evelyn D. SOWERS, 65, of 7757 S.R. 655, Reedsville, died at 6:49 a.m.
Sunday, Jan. 21, 2001, at the Lewistown Hospital. Born March 11, 1935,
in Rockhill Furnace, she was the daughter of the late Dennie Mack and
Naoma Maude (Wible) Moore. She was united in marriage to Theodore H.
Sowers, who preceded her in death Aug. 21, 1993. Surviving are four
children: Pamela D. Nale and Steve J. Sowers, both of Lewistown; Julia
N. Thomas, Mount Union; and Nicki J. Nale, Lewistown. There is one
grandchild. One sister, Naomi Mayes of Jensen Beach, Fla., survives. A
1951 graduate of Orbisonia High School and a 1955 graduate of Lewistown
Hospital School of Nursing, Mrs. Sowers was a registered nurse, working
at F.W. Black Community Hospital, Lewistown Hospital, Malta Home and
William Penn Nursing Horne. She was a member of the Women of the Moose.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 24, at the Bohn
Funeral Home, Reedsville. Interment will be made in the Odd Fellows
Cemetery, Orbisonia. 

Helen Mary WILLIAMS, 74, of 211 Brockview Ave., Chambersburg, died
Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001, at the Chambersburg Hospital. Born Sept. 11,
1926, in Defiance, she was the daughter of the late Charles A. and Erma
Olga (Wilkins) Bussard. She was united in marriage to Charles H.
Williams, who preceded her in death. Surviving are a daughter, Rita
Marie O'Connell of Pennsylvania Furnace, and two grandchildren. One
sister, Doris Sue Krieger of Saxton, and a brother, Gene Bussard of
Chambersburg, survive. A 1943 graduate of Saxton-Liberty High School,
Mrs. Williams was a dispatcher and worked in accounting at Letterkenny
Army Depot, prior to her retirement. She was a member of the St. Paul
United Methodist Church in Chambersburg and the Coalmont United
Methodist Church. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Jan. 27, at
2 p.m., in the chapel of St. Paul United Methodist Church, Chambersburg,
with the Rev. Dr. A. Robert Cook officiating. Interment will be private
at the convenience of the family. 

Robert Hughes WORKMAN, 97, a resident of the Homewood Retirement Center,
Martinsburg, formerly of Saxton, died Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001, at 6
a.m., at the retirement center. Born May 18, 1903, in Kearney, he was
the son of the late David Frank and Lena May (Hughes) Workman. He was
united in marriage to Edith E. Smith Sept. 7, 1931, in Huntingdon. She
preceded him in death March 20, 1977. Surviving are four daughters and a
son: Mrs. John (Betty Ruth) Kifer, Alice Ann Eichelberger, Catherine
Jean Mort, and Mrs. Wayne (Barbara Kay) Hammond, all of Saxton, R.D.,
and David Frank Workman, Vermilion, Ohio. There are 14 grandchildren and
13 great-grandchildren. Three infant sons are deceased. One sister,
Pauline W. Ross of Saxton, R.D., survives. Mr. Workman was preceded in
death by a brother, David Frank Workman, and a sister, Zola W. Gehman.
He was affiliated with the Stonerstown Church of the Brethren. A
graduate of Liberty Central High School, he attended Penn State. Mr.
Workman was a dairy farmer and owned and operated Workman Dairy in
Saxton. He sold the dairy Jan. 1, 1956, and started raising beef cattle
until the late 1970s. He was a member of the Saxton Lions Club, Broad
Top Area Senior Citizens, was a former board member of the Tussey
Mountain High School, and was active with Juniata College archaeological
digs on the Workman farm. He enjoyed spending his winters in Mexico.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Jan. 23 at 2 p.m., at the D.
Ronald Long Funeral Chapel, Saxton, with the Rev. Sarah Q. Malone
officiating. Interment will be made in St. Luke's Cemetery, Saxton, R.D.

William C. KEAY, 64, died Jan. 9, 2001, in State College. Aresident of
Elkton, Md., for 25 years, Mr. Keay recently retired from Cecil County
Public Schools and moved to Alexandria. His parents, William and Marion
Keay, survive in Elizabethtown. He is survived by his wife, Peggy of
Alexandria; son Eric of Ocean City, Md.; and daughter Karyn of
Reisterstown, Md. One brother, Robert Keay, survives in Alexandria. A
graduate of Juniata College and the University of Delaware, Mr. Keay
taught chemistry and physics at North East High School in Maryland for
20 years and for the previous 20 years in Delaware. A memorial service
will be held Sunday, Jan. 28, from 2 until 4 p.m. at Sandy Cove Center
in North East, Md. 

Ruth Elizabeth ELDER, 91, of Millersburg, Ore., died Dec. 6, 2000. She
was born and reared in Saltillo, the daughter of Lee and Etta (Stake)
Barber. She was united in marriage to Clair R. Jacka Dec. 25, 1925, in
Three Springs. She later married Clarence W. Elder May 16, 1938, in
Detroit, Mich., who preceded her in death. Surviving are four sons and
six daughters: Donald Bergeron, West Branch, Mich.; Don Elder, Albany,
Ore.; Richard and Robert Elder, both of Arizona; Faye Stevens, Lebanon;
Lois Boop, Mifflinburg; Betty Cooper, Albany, Ore.; Joyce Walls, Las
Vegas, Nev.; Shirley Hohlfelder, Millersburg, Ore.; and Mary Lentz,
Independence, Ore. There are 23 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren
and four great-great-grandchildren. A sister, Beulah Hall of Huntingdon,
also survives. Two brothers and two sisters preceded her in death. After
finishing school, she worked in a silk mill and was a waitress. After
marrying Mr. Elder, she became a homemaker and enjoyed raising her
children. Mrs. Elder belonged to the Jefferson United Methodist Church
in Oregon, where she taught Sunday School. She was also a member of the
Eagles Lodge. A country western music fan, her hobbies included dancing,
traveling, tatting and watching television, especially "The Price is
Right." A graveside service was held at Riverside Cemetery in Albany,
Ore. 

Anne S. CARPER, 91, formerly of Box 66, Spruce Creek, and a resident of
Huntingdon Manor for the past seven years, died at 5 a.m. Sunday, Jan.
21, 2001, at the Manor. Born Feb. 25, 1909, in Northwood, she was a
daughter of the late Elmer F. and Ida Mae (McCaulley) Rollman. After
1925, she was reared by her step-father, Robert L. Shawley. She was
married to Claude Wippo Carper Oct. 19, 1934, in Alexandria. He preceded
her in death Dec. 23, 1959. Surviving are four children: Joseph W.
Carper and Romaine (Carper) Hamer, both of Spruce Creek; Ronald 0.
Carper of Lexington, S.C.; and Bonnie L. Carper of Spruce Creek. There
are four grandsons and three great-granddaughters. The last surviving
member of her immediate family, she was preceded in death by three
sisters and a brother: Emma Pletcher, Helen Deppen, Sarah Visk and John
Rollman. Mrs. Carper was of the Protestant faith. She was a member of
the Lower Spruce Creek Presbyterian Church Ladies Aid Society. Before
her marriage, she had been employed by the Wilson Chemical Co., Tyrone,
and she later helped at the Nelson House for Children in Spruce Creek
for 11 years. She was also a part-time postal clerk in Spruce Creek for
many years. Private funeral services will be held Wednesday, Jan. 24, at
3 p.m., at the Derman Funeral Home, Inc., Tyrone, with Pastor Bruce K.
Boyles officiating. Interment will be made in the Burket Cemetery,
Warriors Mark, R.D. 

Ruth Virginia ROHER, 82, of Wells Tannery, died at 1:25 a.m. Monday,
Jan. 22, 2001, at Falling Spring Nursing and Rehabilitation Center,
Chambersburg. Born June 19, 1918, in Montgomery Township, Franklin
County, she was the daughter of the late Samuel and Sarah (Hawbaker)
Hawbaker. She was married to Page Paul Roher Dec. 25, 1935. Mr. Roher
preceded her in death June 14, 1997. Surviving are four daughters: Betty
June Berkstresser, Harrisonville; Patricia Johnson, Mount Airy, Md.;
Sally Bohn, Greencastle; and Ruth Fraker, Fort Littleton. There are nine
grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and
three step-great-grandchildren. Four brothers and two sisters are
deceased. Mrs. Roher was a member of the Hustontown Church of God,
Hustontown. She also belonged to the Order of the Eastern Star,
McConnellsburg, and the Fulton County Saddle Club. In her earlier years,
she had been a nursing assistant at the Fulton County Medical Center,
McConnellsburg. She then worked for many years as a waitress at
Johnnie's Diner in McConnelsburg and was later employed at Pleasant
Valley Restaurant, Fort Littleton. Funeral services will be held at 11
a.m. Thursday, Jan. 25, at the M. R. Brown Funeral Home, Hustontown,
with the Rev. Jonathan Laye officiating. Interment will be made in the

Pearl V. (Leamer) RAY, 83, of Penn Run, died Monday, Jan. 22, 2001, at
St. Andrew's Village in Indiana. Born April 21, 1917, in Hollidaysburg,
she was the daughter of the late Samuel F. and Emma Jane (Caldwell)
Leamer. She is survived by her husband, Clarence Ray of Penn Run, and
two daughters: Theda Ray of Los Angeles, Calif.; and Mrs. Fred (Jane)
Mitchell, Penn Run. There are two granddaughters. A sister, Mrs. John
(Myrtle) Rhodes of Alexandria, survives. Two brothers and a sister,
Frank and Ed Leamer and Helen Russell preceded her in death. Mrs. Ray
was a member of the Graystone Presbyterian Church in Indiana. She was a
homemaker and a life member of the Auxiliary of the Disabled Veterans
and the auxiliary of VFW Post No. 1989, Indiana. Funeral services will
be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 25, at the Bence-Mihalcik Funeral
Home, Indiana, with the Rev. Richard E. Hurley officiating. Interment
will follow in the Greenwood Cemetery, Indiana. 

Mary Elizabeth MILLS, 73, of P.O. Box 48, Riddlesburg, died Monday, Jan.
22, 2001, at the home of her nephew, Dennis Mills, in Buffalo, N.Y,
where she resided. Born June 22, 1927, in Saxton, she was the daughter
of the late Thomas and Margaret (Williams) Oaks. She was united in
marriage to Donald Mills in Buffalo, N.Y, in October 1952. He preceded
her in death Feb. 25, 1996. Surviving, along with her nephew in Buffalo,
are two brothers and two sisters: Tom Oaks and Clair Oaks, both of
Braden; Leona Treece of Seattle, Wash.; and Alma Hart, Phoenix Ariz. One
son, Thomas Mills, preceded her in death. Mrs. Mills was a member of the
Ontario Street United Methodist Church and the Order of the Eastern
Star, both of Buffalo, N.Y She was primarily a homemaker. Funeral
services will be held Friday, Jan. 26, at 11 a.m., at the James E. Grace
Funeral Home, Buffalo, N.Y., with the Rev. Ronald Noel officiating.
Interment will be made in the Elmlawn Cemetery, Tonawanda, N.Y. 

Loreen (Kuhns) STROSCHEIN, 85, of 27 W. 29th St., Huntingdon, formerly
of Irwin and St. Petersburg, Fla., died Sunday, Jan. 21, 2001, at 1:26
p.m., at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, Huntingdon, following an extended
illness. Born Oct. 8, 1915, in East McKeesport, she was the daughter of
the late Lorenzo Dow and Sarah Jane (Wallace) Kuhns. She was united in
marriage to Russell Albert Stroschein Sept. 23, 1939, at Trinity
Evangelical Lutheran Church, Pitcairn, with the Rev. Daniel F. Goerff
officiating. Mr. Stroschein preceded her in death April 1, 1995. One
daughter and one son survive: Mrs. Bruce L. (Barbara S.) Thomas of
Huntingdon, and Larry A. Stroschein. There are seven grandchildren, four
great-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren. The last surviving
member of her immediate family, she was preceded in death by two
sisters: Margaret Brown of Elyria, Ohio, and Naomi Kline Loutsenhizer of
Pitcairn. Mrs. Stroschein attended St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church
in Huntingdon, Garden of Peace Lutheran Church in St. Petersburg, Fla.,
and Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Irwin. An active member of the
Optometrists Assistants of Western Pennsylvania, she was also a staunch
supporter of the first Educational Television Station (WQED), and was an
founding member and inspirational spirit of the Ostomy Support Group of
Huntingdon in 1991. A 1933 graduate of Pitcairn High School, she
attended the Indiana Normal School. She was employed by Pittsburgh Plate
Glass, Carnegie Institute and as an optometric assistant in Irwin. She
had been a resident of Huntingdon County since 199l. Mrs. Stroschein
authored "Lifelong Friends," describing her 68 year relationship with
her pen pal, Leny Muskens of Holland, published in "Common Grounds" in
the spring of 1999. A funeral service will be held Wednesday, Jan. 24,
at 8:30 p.m., at the John B. Brown Funeral Home, Huntingdon, with the
Rev. Peter J. Naschke officiating. A committal service will be held at
the Irwin Union Cemetery, North Huntingdon Thursday Jan. 25. at noon. 

Lou Ann ECKLEY, 44, of Boalsburg died Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001, at Centre
Community Hospital in College Township. Born April 22, 1956, in
Huntingdon, she was a daughter of Dorothy Chilcote Kelly of Huntingdon
and the late Lewis Kelly. On May 20, 1978, she married Mark E. Eckley,
who survives at home. She was a 1974 graduate of Huntingdon High School
and a 1976 graduate of South Hills Business School in State College. She
was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday school,
and the PTAs at Panorama Elementary and Mount Nittany Middle schools,
all in State College. She was a volunteer at the American Cancer Society
and other local organizations. She enjoyed flower gardening. In addition
to her husband and mother, she is survived by two sons, Matthew P. and
Paul M., both at home, and a sister, Patti Boysen of Livonia, Mich. The
funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Grace Lutheran Church with the Rev.
Robert M.A.L. Miller officiating. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery,
Huntingdon. 

Pearl Odessa COY, 88, formerly a resident of the Blair House Apartments,
Huntingdon, died Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001, at 12:55 a.m., at Huntingdon
Manor, Huntingdon, where she had been residing. Born Nov. 5, 1912, in
Saltillo, she was the daughter of the late Noah and Chloe Florence
(Keith) Hicks. She was married to Martin "Barney" Coy Sept. 5, 1931 in
Bedford County. Mr. Coy preceded her in death Nov. 26, 1979. Surviving
are three children: Mrs. H. Jesse (Doris) Park, Mapleton; Leonard Coy,
Newton Hamilton; and Mrs. Charles (Lila) Powell, Huntingdon. There are
ten grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, three
great-great-grandchildren and two step-grandchildren. An infant
daughter, Louise Thelma Coy, preceded her in death. One sister, Mrs.
John (Lila) Gaspari of Reading survives, along with two nephews and a
niece. Three brothers preceded her in death: Ralph Hicks, Carl Hicks and
Glenn Hicks. Mrs. Coy was primarily a homemaker. She had attended the
Church of God in Robertsdale and the Abbey Reformed Church UCC of
Huntingdon. Educated in the Robertsdale public schools, Mrs. Coy had
been a lifetime resident of Huntingdon County. She moved from
Robertsdale to the Blair House Apartments in 1995, where she was one of
the first residents. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday,
Jan. 26, at the Cutright-Speck Funeral Home, Ridge Road and Juniata
Ave., Smithfield Township, Huntingdon, with the Rev. Gary H. Marcy
officiating. Interment will follow at 12:30 p.m. at Grandview Cemetery
in Saxton. 

Frank SHUNK Jr., 79, a resident of Meadowview Manor, McVeytown, Wayne
Township, Mifflin, County formerly of 1705 Washington Street,
Huntingdon, died Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001 at 10:05 a.m., at J.C. Blair
Memorial Hospital, Huntingdon. Born May 16, 1921, in Johnstown, he was
the son of the late Frank and Hulda (Lassilia) Shunk. He was united in
marriage to Pauline Shinn June 29, 1953, in Winchester, Va., with the
Rev. Raymond Womeldorf officiating. Mrs. Shunk survives at Meadowview
Manor. Two daughters and one son survive: Joan (Galbraith) Branthaver,
Williamsport, Md.; John P. Galbraith and Mary Anne (Shunk) Morder, both
of Huntingdon. There are five grandchildren. One brother, Robert Shunk
of Huntingdon, also survives. Mr. Shunk was a member of the Stone Church
of the Brethren, Huntingdon. He attended the Robertsdale public schools
and graduated with the Class of 1938 from Robertsdale High School. He
retired from the State Correctional Institution Huntingdon, as captain
of the guard April 16, 1977, after 33 years of service. During World War
II, he served in the United States Army Air Force in the "Theater of
Operations. He was a member of Frank Hommon Post No. 24, American
Legion, Huntingdon. Mr. Shunk had been a resident of the manor since
November 1999. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed reading.
A funeral service will be held Friday, Jan. 26, at 10 a.m., at the John
B. Brown Funeral Home, Huntingdon, with the Revs. Dale W. Dowdy and
Christy L. Dowdy officiating. Interment will be made in the Valley View
Cemetery, also known as the Brumbaugh Cemetery, James Creek. 

Ray G. YEAGER, 79, of 517 S. Jefferson St., Mount Union, died at 12:25
p.m. Sunday, Jan. 21, 2001, at his home. Born July 28, 1921, in Altoona,
he was the son of the late Howard E. and Freda (Manspeaker) Yeager. He
was united in marriage to Pauline (Drake) Fields. Mrs. Yeager survives.,
along with two sons: Ray G. Yeager of Owego, N.Y., and Jerry R. Yeager,
San Francisco, Calif. Also surviving are two stepchildren: Charles A.
Fields of Mount Union and Paula A. Lechner of Brookville. There are
three grandsons, three step-granddaughters, one step-grandson and one
step-great-granddaughter. Two sisters, Frances Rabenstein and Nancy
Watters, both of Altoona, survive. Two brothers, Gene Yeager and John
Yeager, and two sisters Jane Oliver and Patricia Hughes, preceded him in
death. He was a graduate of Altoona High School. Mr. Yeager was a
veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving in the European Theater of War
during World War II. He retired in 1984, with a number of years of
service in the construction industry. A memorial service will be held at
Blair Memorial Park, Altoona, R.D. 7, at the convenience of the family
Friday, Jan. 26, with Vicar Shelby DePriest officiating. Interment will
follow in Blair Memorial Park. 

Carl B. CAROTHERS, 76, of Buffalo, N.Y., formerly of Orbisonia, died
Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, at his residence, following a lengthy illness. He
was born June 2, 1924 in Orbisonia. His wife, Eileen, survives at home.
He is survived by a son, Carl Jr., and three daughters, Patty, Peggy and
Mary. There are nine grandchildren. Mr. Carothers is also survived by
two brothers, Glenwood and Donald Carothers, both of California. He was
preceded in death by a sister, Winifred. Funeral services were held at
the Sacred Heart-Catholic Church, Bowmansville, N.Y. 

Betty Rider HAMMOND, 77, of Boalsburg died Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001, at
Centre Community Hospital in College Township. Born June 21, 1923, in
Marengo, she was a daughter of the late Luther and Florence Gates Rider.
In September 1950 she married Louis F. Hammond, who died in May 1964. In
April 1968 she married Leroy Hammond, who survives at home. She was a
1942 graduate of State College High School. During World War II she
worked at the John R. Wald Defense Plant in Tyrone. Later she worked at
the Penn State Accounting Office, Nittany Printing and Publishing Co.,
and retired from South Hills Business School. She was a member of St.
John's United Church of Christ in Boalsburg. In addition to her husband,
she is survived by two daughters, Connie McChesney of Winter Haven,
Fla., and Cindy Ann Zimmerman of State College; a son, Rickey Hammond of
Lemont; two sisters, Dorothy Miller of Lemont and Joyce Brown of
Milesburg; four brothers, Lynn Rider of Stormstown and John, David and
Larry Rider, all of Marengo; four grandchildren; and a great-grandson. A
brother preceded her in death. Private services will be held at the
convenience of the family with the Rev. Joseph Krabill officiating.
Burial will be in Blair Memorial Park, Bellwood. 

Floyd Elwood "Woody" GROVE, 62, of Main Street, Alexandria, (Porter
Township), died Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001, at 9:35 p.m., at the James E.
VanZandt Medical Center in Altoona. Born Feb. 19, 1938, in Aitch, he was
the son of the late Allen R. Sr. and Olive K. (Baker) Grove. He was
united in marriage to Donna J. Briggs May 25, 1963, at the Alexandria
Presbyterian Manse by the Rev. James Bennett. Mrs. Grove survives at
home, along with two children: Linda Carole Grove and Dwayne Allen
Grove, both of Alexandria. There is one granddaughter. One brother and
one sister survive: Warren C. Grove and the Rev. Mrs. David (Carol)
Weyant, both of Odessa, Texas. One brother, Allen R. Grove Jr., and an
infant sister preceded him in death. Mr. Grove retired from the U.S.
Army and enjoyed doing odd jobs. He served in the Army from Nov. 26,
1957, until Nov. 10, 1960, with Battery B, First Battalion of the 67th
Artillery Division. He was a life member of the William P. Spyker
American Legion Post No. 520, Alexandria, where he had been active for a
number of years as treasurer and was a member of the honor guard. He was
also a member of the Alexandria Volunteer Fire Company, where he was
active in the fire police and was a member of the Hookies Fire Company
in Tyrone. A 1956 graduate of Juniata Valley High School, he was an avid
sports fan and a supporter of Juniata Valley athletics. Mr. Grove had
been a lifetime resident of Huntingdon County and had lived at his Main
Street, Alexandria, residence for the past 32 years. Funeral services
will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, at the Cutright-Speck Funeral
Home, Juniata Valley Chapel, 412 Main St., Alexandria, with the Rev.
John C. Dean officiating. Interment will be made in the Alexandria
Presbyterian Cemetery. 

Lt. Col. Theodore Charies HEINE, retired from the U.S. Air Force Reserve
in 1965, died at Rossmoor Retirement Community in Monroe Township, N.J.,
Saturday, Dec. 30, 2000, and was buried with full military honors
Friday, Jan. 5, 2001, in the Veterans' Memorial Cemetery, Arneystown,
N.J. The Honor Guard of McGuire Air Force Base served as pallbearers and
fired the three-gun salute. Born Sept. 19, 1905, in Stapleton on Staten
Island, N.Y., he was the youngest child of Paul and Amelie (Vuille)
Heine. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, the former Anne M. Meade
of the Rossmoore Retirement Community; two sons and a daughter: Ted of
Waverly, Iowa; John of Monroe Township, N.J.; and Elizabeth Heine, also
of Monroe Township, N.J. There are five grandchildren and three
great-grandchildren. In Huntingdon, he is survived by several nieces,
nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and three
brothers; Paul, Martin and Ernest, and a sister, Madeleine. Called
"Fritz" by his family, Col. Heine spent many childhood summers in
Huntingdon with his Vuille cousins, and later with his brothers. He
graduated from Stuyvesant High School in Manhattan and later shared
dormitory rooms with Sam, and Jim Vuille at Cornell University. Col.
Heine earned his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from
Cornell in 1929. He was employed as a communications engineer by the New
York Tele phone Company in Manhattan from 1929 until his retirement in
1966, and was a registered professional engineer in the state of New
York. He was commissioned as a first lieutenant in the Army Air Corps in
May 1942, having completed ROTC training at Cornell. For most of the
war, he was stationed at Goose Bay, Labrador, in Newfoundland, Canada,
serving as officer in charge of communication for the North Atlantic
quadrant. After the war and achieving the rank of major, he continued to
serve in the Air Force Reserve as commanding officer of the former State
Island Squadron. He was involved in many activities on Staten Island and
pursued his interest. in amateur radio by becoming a ham radio operator,
achieving the extra-class license with call letters K2TC. In 1977, he
moved with his wife to the Rossmoor Retirement Community in Monroe
Township, N.J., where they both remained active in bowling, golf and
bridge. He was a life-long member of the Kingsley Methodist-Episcopal
Church of Staten Island. 

Mary Jane (Temple) SNYDER, 72, of 1225 Meadowood Court, Steamboat
Springs, Colo., died Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001, at 11:19 a.m., at her
sister-in-law's home in Porter Township, Alexandria, following a brief
illness. Born Aug. 29, 1928, at the family home in Petersburg, she was
the daughter of the late Phillip Temple and Mrs. Bertha (Temple)
Plymire, who survives. She was united in marriage to David L. Snyder
Jan. 1, 1966, in Allentown, who preceded her in death June 9, 2000.
Surviving are a daughter and a son: Mrs. Jonathan (Beth Lucille)
Schulze, Wyalusing; and William Piper Spyker III, Steamboat Springs,
Col. There are two grandchildren. Two brothers, Samuel Temple of New
Jersey and Phillip Temple of Missouri, survive. Mrs. Snyder was
primarily a homemaker. She was a member of Our Lady of Annunciation
Catholic Church, Albuquerque, N.M., and the Irish Americans Society. She
graduated from Petersburg Vocational High School in 1946. After moving
from Petersburg, she lived in Albuquerque, N.M., and then later in
Steamboat Springs, Colo. A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Friday,
Jan. 26, at the Most Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church, Sixth and
Washington streets, Huntingdon, with the Rev. David J. Arseneault
officiating. Interment will be made beside her husband, David, in the
Santa Fe National Cemetery in Santa Fe, NM 

Bradly Lee KIBE II, 22, of 128 Creek Drive, Milroy, died at 10 a.m.
Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001, at his residence. Born July 14, 1978, in
Huntingdon, he was the son of Bradly L. Sr. and Debbie J. (McConaughey)
Kibe of 128 Creek Drive, Milroy. He is survived by a companion, Heather
Jo LeFevre, Lewistown. Also surviving are: children, Paige Nikole Kibe
and Bradly Lee Kibe III, both of Lewistown; sister and brother, Cynthia
Marie Kibe, Mexico and Brian Daniel Kibe, Milroy; paternal grandfather,
Melvin E. Kibe, Milroy; and maternal grandmother, Lorma Catherine
McConaughey, Shirleysburg. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the
Bohn Funeral Home, Reedsville, with the Rev. Douglas D. Sabin
officiating. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Milroy. 

Alma A. DONALDSON, 91, of Donahue Manor, Bedford, formerly of Dudley,
died Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001, at 2:20 p.m., at the manor. She had been
in failing health for the past three and one-half months. Born June 15,
1909, in Dudley, she was a daughter of the late Albert and Jennie
(Morgan) Dick. She was united in marriage to Merwyn D. Donaldson July
17, 1937, in Winchester, Va. He preceded her in death Jan. 16, 1974.
Surviving are twin sons, Jon Donaldson of Robertsdale and Don Donaldson
of Riddlesburg. There are four grandchildren and two
step-great-grandchildren. One brother, Kenneth P. Dick of Bedford,
survives. She was preceded in death by nine brothers and sisters: Mae
Reid, Bertha Brown, Ada Hess, Ethel Thompson, Freda Cartwright, William
Dick, Elliott Dick, her twin Albert Dick and James Dick. Mrs. Donaldson
was a member of the Dudley United Methodist Church. She was a school
teacher for 39 years at the following schools: Cherrytown; Green School
in Todd; Coalmont and Dudley. She retired in 1974, from Stonerstown
School. She also owned and operated Donaldson's General Store near
Coalmont for 35 years. She played the piano and organ at various
churches for over 60 years and enjoyed teaching, attending Sunday
School, visiting friends and crocheting. Funeral services will be held
Sunday, Jan. 28, at 2 p.m., at the Dudley United Methodist Church, with
the Rev. Jesse Musser and Pastor Donald Simmons officiating. Interment
will be made in the Dudley Protestant Cemetery. 

Evelyn G. ROURKE, 65, of Meadowview Nursing Care Center, Berlin,
formerly of Broad Top City, died Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001, at 12:25
p.m., at Somerset Hospital. Her death was unexpected. Born Feb. 17,
1935, in Bedford, she was the daughter of the late Morris and Evelyn
(Haffer) Hamilton. She is survived by the following children: Carolyn
Bollman, Quakertown; Edward Rourke, Florida; Boyd Rourke, Ft. Worth,
Texas; Kathleen Williams and Dale Rourke, both of Six Mile Run. There
are ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Two sons, an infant
and Elias Rourke Jr., preceded her in death. Mrs. Rourke was the last
surviving member of her immediate family. She was a member of the Berlin
Church of the Nazarene. She was primarily a homemaker and enjoyed
gardening, needlepoint and reading. Funeral services will be held
Monday, Jan. 29, at 10:30 a.m., at the D. Ronald Long Funeral Chapel,
Saxton, with the Rev. John Buchko officiating. Interment will be made in
the IOOF Cemetery, Broad Top City. 

John E. SEILHAMER, 67, of P.O. Box 18, Shirleysburg, died at 12:25 a.m.
Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, Huntingdon. He
had been in failing health. Born March 18, 1933, in Pinecroft, Altoona,
R.D., he was the son of the late John E. and Arvada (Sparks) Seilhamer.
He was united in marriage to Nellie Fortney Jan. 11, 1952, at the
Christian and Missionary Alliance Church parsonage in Mount Union. Mrs.
Seilhamer survives, along with the following children: John H.
Seilhamer, Shirleysburg, R.D. 1; Mrs. John (Nancy) Ross, Shirleysburg;
Joe E. Seilhamer and Daniel J. Seilhamer, both of Mount Union, R.R. 1;
and Mrs. Bill (Rose) Starr, Blairs Mills, R.R. 1. There are 13
grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Six siblings also survive:
Walter, Harold, Russell and Jerry Seilhamer and Shirley Long, all of
Altoona, and David Seilhamer of San Antonio, Texas. He was preceded in
death by a brother, Bernard Seilhamer, and two infant brothers. Mr.
Seilhamer retired from Harbison-Walker Refractories in Mount Union. He
had previously been employed by Robin Footwear in Mount Union and Gerbo
Shoe Factory in Huntingdon. During the Korean War, he served in Korea as
a sergeant with the U.S. Army 2nd Battalion, 7th Infantry Division. He
received the following medals and commendations: Combat Infantry Badge;
Purple Heart for being wounded in action; Korean Service Medal with one
bronze service star; National Defense Service Medal; and the United
Nations Service Medal. Mr. Seilhamer was a member of the Blue Juniata
VFW Post No. 5754, Mount Union; Madden-Wennick American Legion Post,
Orbisonia; the NRA; North American Hunting Club; and the AARP. He was of
the Brethren faith and was an avid hunter. A funeral service will be
conducted at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, at the Robert D. Heath
Funeral Home, Mount Union, with the Rev. Clarence Fortney and the Rev.
Raymond Hill officiating. Interment will be made in Haven Rest Memorial
Park, Shirleysburg, R.R. 1. 

Anna J. SMITH, 98, a resident of the Woodland Retirement Center,
Orbisonia, formerly of Broad Top City, died at 4:50 a.m. Thursday, Jan.
25, 2001, at the retirement center. Born Aug. 13, 1902, in Broad Top
City, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Wilda (Dixon)
Shanefelter. She was first married to John Leabhart, who preceded her in
death. She then married Clyde Smith, who is also deceased. Surviving are
two daughters and a son: Musa Meosky, Willingboro, N.J.; Georgia Adams,
Ohio; and Anan "Bordie" Smith, New Mexico. There are 16 grandchildren,
12 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren. Three
daughters are deceased. A sister, Betty Jones of Broad Top, survives.
Three sisters and a brother preceded her in death. Mrs. Smith was a
lifetime member of the Broad Top Nazarene Church. She was employed as a
dining room server at the Masonic Home in Elizabethtown. She was also a
homemaker, who enjoyed baking, canning and sewing. She also enjoyed
spending time with her children. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m.
Saturday, Jan. 27, at the Broad Top Nazarene Church, with the Rev.
Rupert Gage officiating. Interment will be made in the Broad Top IOOF
Cemetery. 

Catherine (Biddle) "Kate" WEAR, 84, formerly of 36 E. Milford St., Mount
Union, died at 4:40 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001, at the Fairmount
Homes, Ephrata, where she had been a resident since 1998. Her death was
unexpected. Born June 15, 1916, in Bedford, she was the daughter of the
late Robert I. and Bridget (Gillum) Biddle. She was united in marriage
to Thomas L. Wear June 28, 1939, in Huntingdon. He preceded her in death
March 10, 1997. Two daughters, Mrs. Jon (Catherine "Cathy") Williams of
New Holland, and Mrs. John (Dorothy "Dottie") Hararas of Lanham, Md.,
survive, along with two grandchildren. Two sisters, Hazel McDonough and
Dorothy Wear, preceded her in death. Mrs. Wear was a member of the First
United Methodist Church in Mount Union, where she was a member of the
choir for 40 years, taught Sunday School for 30 years, and was the first
female lay leader of the church. She was a past worthy matron of the
Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter 280, Mount Union; was a former and
first female member of the Mount Union Borough Council; and volunteered
for J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital in Huntingdon. A 1933 graduate of
Huntingdon High School, she was a teacher for the Tuscarora Intermediate
Unit for 21 years. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday,
Jan. 27, at the First United Methodist Church, 15 W. Shirley St., Mount
Union, with the Rev. Dr. Kenneth Grundon officiating. Interment will be
made in the Mount Union Cemetery. 

Richard L. "Butchie" HELTON Jr., 47, of Lewistown, formerly of Mount
Union, died Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, at Centre Community Hospital in
College Township. Born Feb. 19, 1953, in Mount Union, he was a son of
the late Richard L. Sr. and Loretta Galloway Helton, who survives. He
was a 1971 graduate of Mount Union High School. He was formerly employed
by Penelec, Elco and Helton Sanitation. A member of Mount Hope
Missionary Baptist Church in Mount Union, he was an avid hunter and
fisherman. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his companion,
Dora Rogers of Lewistown; three sons, Timothy Taylor of Mount Union,
Jason Taylor of Huntingdon and Matthew Helton of Lewistown; a sister,
Helen C. "Duster" Helton of Mount Union; a brother, Paul J. Helton of
State College; three grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, aunts,
uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by a son, Richard L. Helton
III. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Robert D. Heath
funeral home with the Rev. I.S. Owens officiating. 

Mary Esther (David) BROUSE, 88, formerly of Mount Union and a resident
of Caledonia Manor Nursing Home in Fayetteville since 1992, died at 1:13
a.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, at the home. She had been in failing
health. Born Oct. 23, 1912, in Henderson Township, Huntingdon County,
she was the daughter of the late Victor L. and Mary I. (Dickson) David.
She was married to William J. Brouse Sept. 28, 1939, in Huntingdon. He
preceded her in death Oct. 2, 1970. Surviving is a son, Victor J. Brouse
of Liverpool, N.Y., six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. One
son, William D. Brouse, preceded her in death. One brother and a sister,
Calvin M. David of Elkhart, Ind., and Verna Catherine Schirm of
Huntingdon, survive. Nine brothers and sisters are deceased. Mrs. Brouse
attended the Chambersburg Church of God, where she was very active in
church work. A 1933 graduate of Huntingdon High School, she was a
kindergarten aide in the Mount Union Elementary School. She also worked
at Huntingdon County Head Start and in the office of the American Cancer
Society. She loved to write poetry. Funeral services will be held at 11
a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 30, at the Robert D. Heath Funeral Home, Mount Union,
with Pastor Phyllis Martin officiating. Interment will be made in the
Mount Union Cemetery. 

Harvey J. HOSTETLER, 84, of Valley View Haven, Belleville, formerly of
McAlevy's Fort, died at 9:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, at Valley
View Haven. Born Feb. 15, 1916, in Belleville, he was the son of the
late John Y. and Katie E. (Yoder) Hostetler. His wife, Willa (Wilson)
Hostetler of 232 Hartzler Drive, Belleville, whom he married Oct. 25,
1939, survives. Also surviving are: children, Beverly H. Miller and Mrs.
James (Berdella) Elliot, both of West Linn, Ore., and Richard O.
Hostetler, Bradenton, Fla.; sisters and brothers, Mary Yoder, Esther
Stuter, Helen Peachey, Mrs. Harvey (Stepha) Hostetler, Herbert Wilson,
all of Belleville, and Harold Wilson, Atlanta, Ga.; five grandchildren
and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother,
John Hostetler. He was a 1935 graduate of Belleville High School. He was
a United States Air Force veteran of World War II, having served in the
China Burma India (CBI) Theatre. He retired in 1970 after 30 years of
service and was a command pilot with over 15,000 flying hours. He was
one of the last American military to leave China before the Chinese
Communists came to power. An early pioneer in aviation in Central
Pennsylvania, he was also one of the former owners of the Mifflin County
Airport, and the executive pilot for two governors of Pennsylvania. He
was also a member of the Pennsylvania Flying Farmers, Quiet Birdman, and
the Aircraft Owners & Pilots Association. He was a member of St. James
Lutheran Church, Huntingdon and served on the building committee, as an
usher, and on the official board. He was also a member of the McVeytown
Lodge F&AM 376; the Harrisburg Consistory; Sojouner; a charter member of
Stroup Alexander VFW in Belleville; former member of McAlevy's Fort
Civic Association; and the Boy Scouts of America, Juniata Valley
Council. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Valley
View Haven Chapel, Belleville, with ministers, Peter Naschke and Galen
Sharp officiating. Interment will be in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery,
Belleville, where Stroup Alexander VFW Post 5935, Belleville will
conduct military rites. 

Floyd Thomas NEE, 79, of 116 Shelton Ave., Alexandria, died Saturday,
Jan. 27, 2001, at 12:20 p.m., at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital,
Huntingdon. Born Dec. 13, 1921, in Hyndman, he was the son of the late
George B. and.Elsie (Goad) Nee. He was united in marriage to Jeanne
Sprankle,,Oct. 8, 1945, in Altoona. Mrs. Nee survives at their
Alexandria residence, along with three children: Mrs. Edward J. (Carol)
Anderson and James Thomas Nee, both of Huntingdon, and Mrs. Kenneth
(Jean) Patterson, Alexandria. There are six grandchildren. Two brothers
and a sister preceded him in death: William Nee, George Nee and Margaret
Daugherty. Mr. Nee retired from Conrail and also worked for its
predecessor, the Pennsylvania Railroad. He retired with over 30 years of
service as a trackman. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army,
Headquarters Company, First Battalion, 350th Infantry Division,
stationed in Italy and Sicily. He received the EAME Service Ribbon with
three bronze stars, Combat Infantryman Badge and the Good Conduct Medal.
Mr. Nee was a life member of the William P. Spyker American Legion Post
520, Alexandria, where he had been active with the honor guard; was a
life member of the Alexandria Fire Company; Huntingdon County Fireman's
Association; and Standing Stone Post No. 1754, VFW, Huntingdon. Mr. Nee
enjoyed gardening and hunting for small game. He was a 1941 graduate of
Bedford High School. He had been a resident of Alexandria since his
marriage and had lived at his Shelton Avenue home for the past 35 years.
Funeral services will be held at 10. a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 30, at the
Cutright-Speck Funeral Home, Juniata Valley Chapel, Alexandria, with the
Revs. John C. Dean and Gerald W. McCuller Jr. officiating. Interment
will be made in the Alexandria Presbyterian Cemetery. Full military
honors will be observed at the graveside. 

Harold E. RITCHEY, 75, of 865 Valley Forge Road, Duncansville, died
Saturday evening, Jan. 27, 2001, at the Altoona Hospital, following a
brief illness. Born June 16, 1925, at Blue Knob, he was the son of the
late Franklin and Jennie (Over) Ritchey. He was first married to Mary
Ellen Parks Nov. 23, 1945, in Cumberland, Md. She preceded him in death
Jan. 3, 1995. He then married A. June Gority May 18, 1996, at Dry Run
Gospel Tabernacle. Surviving along with his wife are three children:
Kenneth E. Ritchey, Lafayette, Ind.; Cindy E. Lane, Alexandria and Larry
E. Ritchey, Duncansville. Four stepchildren also survive: Ronald Gority,
North Carolina; Debra Pierce, Pinecroft; Becky Fluke, Williamsburg; and
Todd Gority, Greenwood. There are seven grandchildren, six
step-grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and one
step-great-grandchild. An infant daughter, Kathy, died in 1959. Three
brothers and a sister survive: Dahl Ritchey, Camp Hill; Thomas Ritchey,
Hollidaysburg; Ted Ritchey, Blue Knob; and Betty Claar, also of Blue
Knob. Two brothers, Hamilton and Jack, preceded him in death. Mr.
Ritchey was a long-time member of the Dry Run Gospel Tabernacle, where
he had served as a deacon, Sunday School superintendent, Sunday School
teacher and driver. He was the founder of Ritchey Well Drilling in 1955.
and was still involved with the business. A 1943 graduate of School, he
served as director of Valley Rural Electric for 39 years and was honored
by the Pennsylvania REA as man of the year in 1989. He also served on
the Hollidaysburg Area School Board for a number of years. Funeral
services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 31, at the Dry Run
Gospel Tabernacle, Duncansville, with Pastor John D. Leatherman
officiating. Interment will be made in Dry Run Cemetery. 

Alphonsus V. SLODYSKO, 86 of HC 75, Shade Gap, died at l0:36 a.m.
Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, Huntingdon.
Born Sept. 18, 1914, in Shamokin, he was a son of the late Joseph and
Anna Slodysko. He was united in marriage to Dorothy M. Huffman June 29,
1946, in Wilmington, Del. Mrs. Slodysko survives at home, along with two
sons: Donald E. Slodysko of Burnt Cabins and Dennis G. Slodysko of Shade
Gap. Three step-daughters, Naomi F. Pinto of Reedsville; Beverly Young
of New Jersey; and Kristine Cardwell of California, survive. There are
several grandchildren and great- grandchildren. One brother, Florian
Slodysko of Easley, S.C., survives. Mr. Slodysko retired in 1979, from
Duquesne Power and Light Co., Pittsburgh. Funeral services will be held
at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 30, at the Martin R. Brown Funeral Home,
Orbisonia, with the Rev. Wilson Boyd and the Rev. Belvy White
officiating. Interment will be made in the Fair Ridge Cemetery, Shade
Gap, R.D. 

Hazel H. WESTOVER, 68, of 27 Water St., Allensville, died at 7:45 p.m.
Friday, Jan. 26, 2001, at Centre Community Hospital. Born Sept. 18,
1932, in Huntingdon, she was the daughter of the late James I. and Effie
(Wagner) Harshbarger. Her husband, Karl J. Westover, whom she married
June 25, 1955 in Huntingdon, survives. Also surviving are: a son, Joseph
M. Westover, Belleville; brothers and sisters, William Harshbarger,
Athens, Ga., Verna Foster, McVeytown, and Mrs. Guy (Ethel) Foust, Centre
Hall; and six grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a grandson and
brothers and sister, John Harshbarger, Edwin Harshbarger and Dottie
Harshbarger Crozier. She was secretary/treasurer of Allensville Planing
Mill Inc. She attended the Allensville Presbyterian Church, Allensville.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Allensville
Presbyterian Church with a second service at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at the
church, with the Rev. Geoffrey Huish, the Rev. Howard Jenkins, and the
Rev. Chester Halstead officiating. Interment will be at the convenience
of the family in the Allensville Presbyterian Cemetery. 

Mary E. PUTT, 87, a resident of Morrisons Cove Home, Martinsburg,
formerly of Saxton, died Friday, Jan. 26, 2001, at 5:07 p.m., at the
home, following an extended illness. Born Feb. 18, 1913, in Spisska
Bela, Hungary, she was the daughter of the late Joseph S. and Veronica
(Bucz) Kurucz. She was united in marriage to Bernard C. "Baidie" Putt
March 30, 1931. He preceded her in death May 28, 1990. Surviving are the
following children: Helen Helsel, Bernard "Ted" Putt, Jackson Putt,
Janet Neville, Beverly Wyles, John Frank Putt and Peggy Whited, all of
Saxton, R.D.; Jean Patterson, Mechanicsburg; Paul J. Putt, Cleveland,
Tenn.; Judy White, Rogersville, Ala.; and Donna Hess, James Creek. There
are many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and
great-great-grandchildren. One daughter and one son are deceased.
Several siblings survive: Joseph Kurtz, Loraine, Ohio; Janet Gantz,
Irene Strong, Wilma Szabo, Paul Korucz, all of Elyria, Ohio; Frank
Kurtz, Stow, Ohio; Robert Kurucz, Parkersburg, W.Va.; and Helen Toth,
Defiance, Ohio. Three brothers preceded her in death. Mrs. Putt was a
member of the Immaculate Conception Parish in Dudley. She was primarily
a homemaker and enjoyed cooking. A funeral Mass will be held Tuesday,
Jan. 30, at 10 a.m., at the Immaculate Conception Church, Dudley, with
the Rev. Patrick Leahey officiating. Interment will be made in the
Grandview Cemetery, Saxton RD. 

Lillian P. STAKE, 97, formerly of Saltillo, died at 9:40 p.m. Saturday,
Jan. 27, 2001, at Epworth Manor, Tyrone. Born Feb. 16, 1903, in
Saltillo, she was a daughter of the late William A. and Martha M. (Long)
Park. She was united in marriage to Wendell A. Stake Nov. 30, 1933, at
the Saltillo United Methodist Church, by the Rev. J. H. Herritt, in a
double ceremony with Winifred A. Kough and Morris B. March. Mr. Stake
preceded her in death May 17, 1989. She was preceded in death by two
brothers, Chester and Orris. Mrs. Stake was a member of the Saltillo
United Methodist Church since the age of ten. She was educated at the
Saltillo Elementary School, one year each at Saltillo High School,
Orbisonia High School and Mount Union High School. She graduated from
Juniata College in 1928, with a bachelor of science degree. She then
received her master's of education degree from Penn State University.
She retired in 1968, after teaching for a total of 36 years: five years
at Petersburg Vocational High School and 31 years at Orbisonia High
School and Southern Huntingdon County elementm schools. Funeral services
will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 31, at the Robert I. McClain
Funeral Home, Cassville, with Pastor Bonnie Ort officiating. Interment
will be made in the Saltillo Cemetery. 

Lizzie M. DETWEILER, 92, of HCR 61, Allensville, died at 7:35 a.m.
Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2001, at her residence. Born Oct. 13, 1908, in
Belleville, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Nancy
(Hostetler) Hostetler. Her husband, Samuel Y. Detweiler, died Jan. 20,
2000. Surviving are: children, David H. Detweiler, Belleville, Noah W.
Detweiler and Jesse A. Detweiler, both of Mill Creek, Joseph B.
Detweiler, Samuel Y. Detweiler Jr., and Mrs. Jonas (Sarah) Zook, all of
Allensville; brother and sisters, John A. Hostetler, Goshen, Ind., Mary
Smith, Newton, Kan. and Mrs. Fred (Barbara) Slabaugh, Seford, Del.; 42
grandchildren, 135 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by an infant child; one grandchild; one
great-grandchild; a sister, Mrs. Daniel (Sylvia) King; and two brothers,
Aaron Hostetler and Jake Hostetler. She was a member of the Old Order
Amish. Services will be held at 9 a.m. Friday at the Benuel Peachey
residence, with Bishop Shem Swarey officiating. Interment will be in the
Allensville Mennonite Amish Cemetery. 

Jimmy G. HELSEL, 73, of Saxton, died at 1 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2001,
at Nason Hospital, Roaring Spring. Born Sept. 27, 1927, in Saxton, he
was the son of the late George B. and Flora Belle (Hoover) Helsel. He
married Helen Mae Putt July 23, 1948, in the Brethren in Christ Church
in Saxton, with the Rev. Roscoe Ebersole officiating. In addition to his
wife, he is survived by five daughters: Jeanette Wilson, James Creek;
Kathy Brode, Mapleton; Jayme Moyle, Littlestown; Robin Barnett, Todd;
and Jill Raley, Saxton. There are 12 grandchildren and 11
great-grandchildren. One sister, Shirley Lynn of Six Mile Run, survives.
He was preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers. Mr. Helsel was
a member of he Church of God Tabernacle, Saxton. During World War II, he
served as a private in the U.S. Army and received the Army of Occupation
Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. Mr. Helsel was a member of the
International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union Local No. 126
until his retirement. He was a Hopewell Township supervisor for six
years. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 2, at the
Church of God Tabernacle, Saxton, with Pastor Lanny Hoover officiating.
Interment will be made at Grandview Cemetery, Saxton, R.D., with full
military accords. 

Mary A. JACKIEWICZ, 81, formerly of Mount Union, and a resident of
Woodland Retirement Center in Orbisonia for the past six years, died at
5:12 p.m. Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, at the home. She had been in failing
health. Born April 8, 1919, in Mount Union, she was the daughter of the
late Alexander and Anna (Smelgeski) Dwozan. She was united in marriage
to Stanley F. Jackiewicz in 1958. He preceded her in death Aug. 4, 1992.
Surviving are the following siblings: Michael F. Dwozan and Demetrius
Dwozan, both of Georgia; Josephine M. Dwozan of Mount Union and Joseph
Dwozan of Florida. Several nieces and nephews survive. Mrs. Jackiewicz
was a member of St. Catherine's Roman Catholic Church, Mount Union, and
the Bricktown Seniors. She attended the Mount Union schools and retired
from Standard Brands in New Jersey. A funeral Mass will be held at 10
a.m. Thursday, Feb. 1, at St. Catherine's Church in Mount Union, with
the Rev. Elwood Figurelle officiating. Interment will be made in St.
Catherine's Cemetery, Shirleysburg, R.D. 1. 

Rosanna Marie RAMSEY, 41, of Doran Road, Hustontown, died of natural
causes at 5:44 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2001, at Valley View Haven,
Belleville. Born Nov. 24, 1959, in Lewistown, she was the daughter of
Naomi B. (Yoder) Yoder of Belleville and the late John R. Yoder Sr. Her
husband, Robert L. Ramsey, whom she married Aug. 25, 1989, survives.
Also surviving are a sister, Marjorie Armstrong, Belleville and two half
brothers, John R. Yoder Jr., Allensville and Gordon W. Yoder, Canadisia.
She was preceded in death by a brother, James Richard Yoder. She was
last employed as a secretary at Valley View Haven, Belleville. She was a
member of Locust Grove Mennonite Church, Belleville. Services will be
held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Locust Grove Mennonite Church, Belleville,
with the Rev. Eric Renno, Pastor Mayard Beitzel and Pastor Sam Stoey
officiating. Interment will be in Locust Grove Mennonite Cemetery,
Belleville. 

Stephen BASARAB, 87, of Wyman Park, Baltimore, Md., died Jan. 12, 2001,
at his Wyman Park home. Born July 13, 1913, in Madera, his parents
immigrated from what was then the Austro-Hungarian empire. He is
survived by his wife of 45 years, the former Wanda Gregorius, and two
daughters: Daria Phair of Charles Village and Lisa Basarab of Wyman
Park. There are two grandchildren. Three brothers and four sisters
survive; John Basarab of Falls Church, Va.; Paul Femchak of Lutherville;
Andrew Femchak of Huntingdon; Mary Marks of Guilford, N.Y.; Susan
Warholic, Belccaria; Katherine Lumanick and Ann Kohan, both of Ramey.
Mr. Basarab dropped out of high school after the death of his father,
and went to work in the coal mines to help support his family. During
the 1930s, he was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps. He served
in the Army in Europe during World War II and was recalled to active
duty during the Korean War. He was discharged with the rank of staff
sergeant. After earning his GED, he was awarded a bachelor's degree and
a master's degree in liberal arts, both from Johns Hopkins University in
Baltimore, Md. Mr. Basarab worked as a certified public accountant for
the IRS for 30 years and retired in 1979. He had a life-long interest in
helping immigrants adjust to life in the United States and was a past
chairman of the Maryland Republican Heritage Council. He had been
secretary of the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America. He was a
founder of the Ukrainian Education Association and was co-author of "The
Ukrainians of Maryland," published in 1977. He lectured widely on
Ukrainian and former Soviet Union history at area schools. He also
championed the rights of the elderly and was a co-founder and board
member of the Lemko House, a residence for senior citizens in Fells
Point, Md. Mr. Basarab was a charter member of the Madera Pioneers
Baseball Team, which is featured in the Baseball Hall of Fame in
Cooperstown, N. Y. He was a member of the American Legion, Veterans of
Foreign Wars and St. Michael's Ukrainian Catholic Church in Baltimore,
Md., where services were held Jan. 15. 

Dale W. BUCKWALTER, 72, a,resident of Lebanon and a winter resident of
Plant City, Fla., died Jan. 26, 2001. He is survived by his wife of 51
years, Arlene M. Buckwalter of Plant City, Fla., two sons and a
daughter: Dale I. Buckwalter, Lewes, Del.; Dennis C. Buckwalter,
Lancaster; and Darlene Wentzel, Lititz. There are six grandchildren and
two great-grandchildren. One brother, Raymond R. Buckwalter of
Lancaster, survives. Mr. Buckwalter had a summer home in Calvin and
spent a lot of time there. He worked for 43 years at Buckwalter
Construction, Inc., and retired in 1988, as part owner. His interests
included golf, bowling, hunting and trap shooting. He was a World War II
veteran, serving at the Naval Air Station at Agana, Guam. He was a
member of the Plant City Church of God and Living Waters Chapel in
Lebanon. 

Alice Jane (Klinefelter) GRAGILLA, 68, of Huntingdon, R.R. 3, died
Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2001, at Good Shepherd Specialty Hospital, Allentown.
Born in Centre County, she was the daughter of the late Frederick and
Florence (Keen) Klinefelter. She was married to Albert John Gragilla,
who died July 11, 1998. Surviving are three sons and three daughters:
Scott A. Gragilla, Pottstown; Richard J. Gragilia, Birdsboro; Russell J.
Gragilla, Exton; Mrs. Carl (Andrea J.) Barbieri, Birdsboro; Mrs. Sam
(Shari L.) Filoromo, Parkesburg, and Mrs. Bernie (Carol) Callaghan,
Sewell, N.J. There are 15 grandchildren. She had been employed as a
computer room manager for 12 years, retiring in 1996 from Downingtown
National Bank. Graveside services will be held Feb. 2, at 11 a.m., at
Philadelphia Memorial Park, Frazer. 

Carl L. MORNINGSTAR, 96, of 1777 Braceville, Ohio, died Tuesday, Jan.
30, 2001, at Shepherd of the Valley, Niles, Ohio. Born Dec. 17, 1904, in
Entriken, he was the son of the late William and Margaret (McCray)
Morningstar. He married Stella Grubb in 1935. She preceded him in death
in April 1979. He then married Fern (Hess) Ford, who survives in
Maytown. Also surviving are a foster daughter and two sons: Marlene
Hale, Palmyra, N.J.; Donald G. Morningstar, Braceville, Ohio; and Cletus
L. Morningstar, Austintown, Ohio. There are six grandchildren and nine
great-grandchildren. Three sisters also survive: Alice Ramsey,
Aliquippa; Florence Everhart, College Park, Md.; and Aloneda Dix,
Florida. He was preceded in death by two sisters and four brothers:
Freida Crownover, Ketturah Ellen Morningstar, Charles, John, Jesse and
Elvin Morningstar. Mr. Morningstar had lived in Southington, Ohio, since
1999 and was formerly of Maytown. He worked as a miner and carpenter and
also worked for J&L Steel for 15 years, retiring in 1972. He was a
former member of the Civil Conservation Corps during the Roosevelt Era
and was a member of the Saxton Brethren Church. He liked to hunt deer
and small game and enjoyed woodworking, crafts, gardening and
horticulture. Funeral services will be held at the Messiah Lutheran
Church in Newton Falls Sunday, Feb. 4, at 2 p.m., where friends may call
one hour prior to the services. Interment will be made in the Entriken
Cemetery Monday, Feb. 5, at 11 a.m. 

Mary Sollers LAWLER, 79, of Trevose, died Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2001, at her
home, following a lengthy illness. Born April 27, 1921, in Water Street,
she was the daughter of the late Henry and Effie (Hess) Metz. Her
husband, Richard J. Lawler, preceded her in death in 1975. Surviving are
four sons and two daughters: Patrick Joseph Lawler, Petersburg; Michael
Richard Lawler, Water Street; Daniel Courtney Lawler, Warrington;
Raymond Metz Lawler, Alexandria; Kathleen (Lawler) Mason, New Village,
N.J.; Virginia Mary Lawler, Trevose. There are 16 grandchildren and
several great-grandchildren. Three siblings also survive: Jean (Metz)
Stone, Alexandria; Katherine (Metz) Weko, Water Street; and Janet (Metz)
Biggs, Plumtree, N.C. Mrs. Lawler was a homemaker. She had been a
resident of Trevose, Bucks,County, for over 50 years. Services and
interment will be private at the convenience of the family.
