Preceded in death by brothers, John, William and Harry; and sisters, Alberta Oliver and Emma Boring. Survived by widow, former Eva Layman, and these children: Alma, wife of Ronald Ayers, Robinson; Leroy Jr. married to former Joan Betts, Blairsville RD 1; Irvin married to former Beverly Mrozinski, Latrobe; Jerry, married to former Faye Reep, Ligonier; Nancy wife of Omer Wagner, and Gary married to former Sandra Harsh, both of Robinson; and Connie wife of Ronald Gardner, Blairsville RD 1; also 17 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Sadie Penrose, 76, of Windber, formerly of West Bolivar, died Thursday Nov. 15, 2001 at Windber Hospice. Born June 25, 1925 in West Bolivar, she was the daughter of the late Oliver Jacob and Wilda Mary Elizabeth (Garland) Sherman. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Russel S.; her daughter, Karol; her sister, Olive Burkett. Surviving are children; Veronica, wife of Brian Denning, Mine 40; Gary and wife Deborah, West Bolivar; Wayne and wife Theresa , Brush Valley; Timothy and wife Rose, Windber; Phillip and wife Deborah, Seward; David and wife Gloria, Windber; Russell Jr. and wife Rebecca, Beaverdale; Also surviving are 23 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren; sisters, Helen Sherman, Onnalinda; Alice May Penrod, Beaverdale; Grace Burkett, Portage; brothers, Russell and Louis, both of Onnalinda. Services were held Monday at Stuart Funeral Home, New Florence with Pastor Ron Fish officiating. Interment was in Germany Lutheran Cemetery.

Also preceded in death by granddaughter, Tammy Penrose, and sister, Eva Penrose. Survived by husband, Otis J. Pentrose; children, Harold, married to Nora Roby, Heshbon; Karen wife of Gary Buckles, Bolivar; and Delores wife of Kerry Thompson; Beverly wife of Joel LaMantia; and Louanne wife of Donald Naylor, all of Robinson; 11 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; and sisters Irene Hill, Blairsville; Stella Dias, Heshbon; Dorothy Johnston, Mahaffey; and Ruth Clark and Ethel Potochniak, both of New Florence. Preceded in death by her husband Clarion, a sister, Mrs. Myrtle Tedrow and a brother Scott Cline, she is survived by these children; Richard of Bolivar, Mrs. Lola McGraw of Robinson, Gary of Cleveland, Earl of Savannah, Ga. Fairfield Twp. native was member of Community Bible Church, W. Bolivar Martha Jane McClarren, 79, of 665 Muir Road, Blairsville, died Saturday June 19, 1999 at Lee Hospital, Johnstown. Mrs. McClarren a member of Community Bible Church, West Bolivar, was born Christmas Day 1919 in Fairfield Twp., Westmoreland County, daughter of the late William Charles and Amelia Clark Baird. She enjoyed gardening. Surviving are her children Mrs. Glenn (Sandra Pearl) Syphrit, Mrs Rossie (Peggy) Lichtenfels and Mrs Dennis (Kendra) Shaffer, all of Robinson, and Mrs Jesse (Mary) McGarvey, Blairsville. Also four grandchildren; six great grandchildren. Services were held Wednesday at Stuart Funeral Home, New Florence, Pastor Rex Lichtenfels officiating. JACK MUNDORFF, 73, Bolivar RD 1, died Sunday Dec. 27, 1992 at Presbyterian University Hospital, Pittsburgh. The son of John and Margaret Yeager Mundorff he was born March 29, 1919 in Fairfield Twp. Mr. Mundorff was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Bolivar. Prior to his retirement he had been employed as a coal miner for Florence Mining. Surviving are his wife Katherine Gross Mundorff; these children, Mrs. Bruce (Helen) Faith, Blairsville RD 1; Bruce C., Mohawk N.Y., John C, Bolivar RD 1, Keith A, York; and Scott C., Mount Joy; eight grandchildren and these brothers and sisters Virginia Kinsey, New Florence; Susan Zufall, St. Petersburg, Fla. and David 'Fritz', Bolivar RD 1. He was preceded in death by a son Matthew Mundorff and a brother Paul Mundorff. Friends will be received from 2-4 and 7-9 today in the J. Paul McCracken Funeral Home, Bolivar where the Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday in St. Mary's Catholic Church, Bolivar, with the Rev. Simeon Marro. O. Carm., as celebrant. Interment will follow in Bolivar Westview Cemetery.

A son of William S. and Susan Burkett Mundorff, he was born May 8, 1888 in Bolivar. Mr. Mundorff was a retired carpenter. Surviving are these children; Virginia Kinzey, New Florence; Jack and David 'Fritz' both of Bolivar; Susan Zufall, St. Petersburg, Fla. ; 16 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Maggie M. Yeager Mundorff; a son Paul; one grandson; two brothers and four sisters. HAROLD E. McKINNEY
Army vet of Korean War, member of UMWA Local 1257 and Steelworkers
Harold E. McKinney, 70, New Florence, died July 23, 2003 at Memorial Medical Center. Born Nov. 30, 1932 in New Florence, he was the son of the late William and Thelma Shirley, McKinney. A proud union supporter, he was a member of UNWA District 2 Local 1257 and AFL-CIO United Steelworkers. An Army veteran of the Korean War, Mr. McKinney was a member of Duane Boring Post 9310, veterans of Foreign Wars, Robinson and an avid hunter and football fan with a special interest in United High School and Penn State teams. He enjoyed watching his grandsons play baseball and was a lifelong donor of blood for the American Red Cross. He was preceded in death by his twin sons, William and Henry; brothers, Sherman "Billy" and John; sisters, Irene and Mary Burkley; an old faithful pal, "Rusty" He was deeply devoted to his wife the former Emily M. St. Clair, whom he married Dec. 30, 1955. Also survived by children Harold L. married to Bambi Johns, Enola, and Ann wife of John Rougeaux, Indiana; grandsons, Patrick and Brandon McKinney, Blairsville and John and Jake Rougeaux, Indiana; step grandson, Mark Crummett, Blough. Also sisters and brothers Vivian 'Betty' Shaftic and Sondra Boring, Bolivar; George, twin Harry and Nancy Silk, New Florence; Paul, Robinson; Clifford, Lockport; Sally Gademsey, Blairsville; sister-in-law Claudia Shoenfelt, Blairsville, 'best friend' Buddy. Cecil R. Penrose, 73, of Ligonier, died Saturday July 19, 2003 in Latrobe Area Hospital. He was born Jan. 7, 1930 in West Wheatfield Twp. Indiana County, a son of Albert and Olive (Boring) Penrose. He served 20 years in the Air Force, retiring as a master sergeant. He was an insurance sales representative. He was a member of the Columbus (Ohio) VFW.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Patricia Messer Penrose; a daughter, Nancy; a son Michael and three brothers, Jay and Merle Penrose and Gilbert Quay. Surviving are his wife, Wilma Ando Penrose; two daughters, Mrs. Jason (Rebecca) Blackburn of Lancaster, Ohio, and Mrs. Carlos (Barbara) Sparks of Dublin, Ohio; a son, Thomas A. of Columbus, Ohio; a stepdaughter, Mrs. David (Debra) Knisley of Kenton, Ohio; a stepson, Dennis F. Mitchell and his wife Janet of Upper Sandusky, Ohio; Also surviving are seven grandchildren; a great grandchild; a step grandchild two sisters, Mrs. Warren (Gay) McGuire and Mrs. Charles (Fay) Harr, both of Ligonier and a brother Edward and wife Lupe, New Braunfels, Texas. PENROSE, E. Jay, 69, Ligonier, died Dec. 15, 2000 at Latrobe Area Hospital. Born March 18, 1931 in Robinson, son of Albert S. and Olive (Boring) Penrose. Preceded in death by infant brother and brother Merle Penrose. Survived by wife of 44 years, Lois (Chambers) Penrose; daughter, Mrs. Edger (Sheri) Wedge, Ligonier RD 1 ; sons Gregory W. (Debra) Penrose, Ligonier RD 2 and Gerald 'Jerry' (Angela) Alan, Latrobe RD 6; six grandchildren and one great grandchild. Also survived by sisters, Mrs. Walter (Susie) Baird, Bolivar; Mrs. Warren (Gay) McGuire, Ligonier; and Mrs. Charles (Fay) Harr, Ligonier; and brothers, Cecil Ray Penrose, Delaware, Ohio; Edward 'Kay' Penrose and wife Lupe, Brunsfel, Texas; and Gilbert Q. Penrose and wife Ann, Johnstown. Prior to his retirement in 1989, Jay had been employed by Teledyne-Vasco for over 31 years. Member and former trustee and church board member of Ligonier First Church of the Brethren .Veteran of the Korean War, having served with the U.S. Air Force. Member of the American Legion Post 267 and Ligonier Township Sportsmen's Club. Jay loved to travel with his wife, Lois and spend time with his loving family. Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Ligonier First Church of the Brethren, Ligonier, the Rev. James D'Amico , Interment, Germany Lutheran Cemetery. Merle C. Penrose, 57, of Bolivar RD 1, died Saturday May 31, 1997 at Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh. He was born Oct. 14, 1939 in Robinson, a son of the late Albert S. and Olive J. (Boring) Penrose. Before his retirement he worked as a coal miner for the Florence Mining Co. he was a member of U.M.W.A. and social member of American Legion Post 128 and Robinson VFW Post 9310.He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Joanne I. (Kastner) Penrose; a daughter, Roxanne (Mrs. Herbert) Bracken of Bolivar RD 1; two sons, Richard A. Penrose and his wife, Donna of Ligonier; Tracy A. Penrose of Albion; six grandsons; four brothers, Cecil Ray Penrose of Columbus, Ohio; Ervin Jay Penrose of Ligonier; Edward Kay Penrose of New Braunfels, Texas; Gilbert Quay Penrose of Singer Island, Fla.; two sisters, Lydia Gay McGuire and Zora Fay Harr, both of Ligonier. Dean L. Penrose, 63, of Robinson, died Thursday June 19, 1997 at Lee Hospital, Johnstown. Mr Penrose was born Sept. 16, 1933 in Robinson, West Wheatfield Twp. son of the late John H. and Bessie Albaugh Penrose. He was a retired employee of Allegheny Foundry, Bolivar and a member of Faith Lutheran Church, Robinson. He also was a member of the Robinson Rod and Gun Club and a social member of Duane Boring Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9310 Robinson. Survivors include his wife Olive C. St. Clair Penrose; three children, Trenice, Robinson, Mrs. Gary (LuAnn) Deemer, Bolivar and Larry and his wife the former Cindy Miller, New Florence RD 2; six grandchildren; five great grandchildren; Also surviving are four sisters and brothers, Gladys Brendlinger, Pavia, N.Y., and Janet Fry, Ray and Merle all of Robinson. His sister Edith Garland preceded him in death. Services were held Monday at Stuart Funeral Home, New Florence, Rev. Allyn Giuffre officiating. Interment was in Germany Lutheran Cemetery, Robinson.

Russell S. Penrose
Russell S. Penrose, 70, of Windber, formerly of New Florence RD 2, died Wednesday March 22, 1995 at Lee Hospital, Johnstown. Mr Penrose was born Dec. 19, 1924 in West Wheatfield Twp., Indiana County, son of the late Leslie and Susan Lichtenfels Penrose. He was a retired employee of Scalp Level Borough and a member of the Central Pennsylvania Police Association. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Sadie Sherman Penrose; children Russell Jr. of Beaverdale, Pa., David and Mrs. Brian (Veronica) Denning, both of Windber, Phillip of Seward, Timothy of Jerome and Wayne and Gary both of Armagh. Also surviving are 22 grandchildren and five great grandchildren; Also five brothers and sisters, Fred, and Pearl Krebs, both of Robinson, George and Erma Rodkey both of New Florence RD 2 and Nora Muir of Blairsville RD 4. He was preceded in death by his daughter Carol; his brothers Joseph, Albert and Paul; his sisters Vinnie Boring and Hazel Lichtenfels. Violet B. Penrose
Violet Belle Penrose, 92, of Blairsville RD 1, died Wednesday Jan. 28, 1998 at St Andrew's Village, Indianan, PA. She was born Nov. 30, 1905 in West Wheatfield Twp. A daughter of the late Ralph and Annie (Baird) Boring. She was a member of Germany United Methodist Church. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Earl L. Penrose; a son, Raymond; two grandsons, Chuckie Betts and Johnnie Penrose; five brothers, William, Wilbert, Emanuel, Floyd and Glenn Boring; and five sisters, Mary Boring, Phyllis Detwiler, Mervilla Closson, Flora McIntire and Stella Hoffman; and sons-in-law, Leslie Muir, Donald Betts, Kenneth Haire, and Lewis McElwee. She is survived by five children, Delnora Penrose of Robinson; Betty wife of Ira 'Bing' Boring of Bolivar; Leona McElwee of Blairsville RD 1; Florence Haire of New Florence RD 2; and Arthur James Penrose and his wife Jo of Dillsburg; 22 grandchildren, 36 great grandchildren and a great great granddaughter. Funeral services were held Saturday at the Kenneth A. Stuart Funeral Home, New Florence, with the Rev. R. Kenneth Keiper officiating. Burial was in Germany Lutheran Cemetery.

John Frederick 'Fred', 81, Robinson, died March 8, 2001 at UPMC Lee Regional Hospital. Born Aug. 4, 1919 in West Wheatfield Twp. son of the late Leslie and Susie (Lichtenfels) Penrose. Preceded in death by sisters, Vinnie Boring and Hazel Lichtenfels and brothers, Joseph, Russell, Paul and Albert Penrose. Survived by wife of 61 years, Leanna P. (Kough) Penrose; daughters, Carole, wife of Eugene Ludwig, Robinson, Pa., Sharon wife of Randy Bartlebaugh, Robinson, Pa., Sons Donald, and wife Barbara Penrose, Bolivar RD 1; James and wife Patricia Penrose, Bolivar RD 1; four grandchildren; and one great granddaughter; sisters, Nora Muir, Ohio, Pearl Krebs, Robinson, Pa., Erma Rodkey, New Florence RD 2, brother George Penrose, New Florence RD 2 and several nieces and nephews. Prior to his retirement, Fred owned and operated the former Penrose Plumbing and Heating Co., in Robinson, which is now operated by his sons. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in Japan with the US Army. He is a member of the Robinson Church of the Brethren and the Robinson VFW Post 9310. Leona P. Penrose, 82, Robinson died Friday, Dec. 5, at her home. Mrs. Penrose was born Jan. 22, 1921 in West Wheatfield Twp. , Indianan County a daughter of Thomas Uhlin and Minnie may Evans Kough. She was a member of the Robinson Church of the Brethren and the Robinson Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9310 Ladies Auxiliary. She is survived by two daughters, Carole Ludwig and her husband Eugene and Sharon Bartlebaugh and her husband Randy all of Robinson; Also surviving are sons, Donald Penrose and his wife Barbara and James Penrose and his wife Patricia all of Bolivar; four grandchildren; two great grandchildren and a sister, Hazel Jaber of Johnstown. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband John F. 'Fred' Penrose; two brothers, Lester and James and two sisters Edna Luther and Irene Howard. Services were held at McCracken Funeral Chapel, Bolivar with Rev. Farrell Abraham officiating. Interment followed in Germany Lutheran Cemetery. Memorial contributions were suggested to the Robinson Church of the Brethren.

Mearl A. Sowers Jr.
Caretaker at Camp Henry Kaufman, was a preacher in Robinson, Armagh Mearl Sowers Jr., of Johnstown, 62, died Friday June 5, 1998 at home of a heart attack. Rev. Sowers was the caretaker at Camp Henry Kaufman near Bolivar for 22 years. He began ministering at the Robinson United Methodist Church in 1984 and also preached at Community Bible Church in Bolivar and the Pentecostal Tabernacle Church in Robinson. Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Anna Mae; three children, Rick, Fresno, Calif., and Pat Triplin and Randy, both of Johnstown; four grandchildren.

Virginia C. Sowers
SOWERS, Virginia C., 79, Robinson RD 1, died Jan. 2, 1995 at Good Samaritan Medical Center, Johnstown. Born Oct. 11, 1915 in Belsano, daughter of late John and Margaret (Overman) McCullough. Also preceded in death by husband, Mearl A. Sowers Sr. sisters, Alice and Clara; and brothers, Bill, Samuel and Lawrence McCullough. Survived by these children: Mearl A. St. Clair, Doris Mae (Garland), 76, Bolivar RD 1, died Jan. 10, 2003 at UPMC Lee Regional. Born Dec. 8, 1926 in West Bolivar, daughter of Joseph A. and Vesta L. (Muir) Garland. Preceded in death by father and infant brother, James Garland. Survived by mother Bolivar RD 1, Beloved wife of John E. "Spark" loving mother of Barry, married to Lynda Schroyer, Brush Valley; and Rodney K. married to Janice, West Bolivar RD 1 ; Loving grandmother of Scott and fiancée Misty: Keith; Rebecca, wife of James Wagner; and Jason, and wife, Jennifer. Also survived by beloved great grandson, Jacob. Sister of Leona G. Howe and Lee J. Garland, both of Bolivar RD 1; Jo Ann Riddell, New Florence; and Donald Rex Garland, Robinson. Mrs. Elizabeth Hyslop Forsythe
Elizabeth Hyslop Forsythe, wife of William Forsythe, died at her home in this place, Monday, May 20th aged 78 years, 4 months and 19 days after an Illness of only a few days. Besides her husband she is survived by ten children as follows: Mrs. Mary Luther, Turtle Creek; Robert, Bradenville; James, McKeesport; William, Washington; John, Lockport; Mrs. Alex Wynn, Elizabeth, George, Thomas and Albert, Bolivar. Her funeral took place yesterday, services being held in the Christian church, West Bolivar. (1913)

Funeral of George Muir
George Muir, who was killed in the mines as noted in these columns last week was buried Sunday afternoon. Funeral service was held in the Church of Christ, West Bolivar, conducted by Walter Muir, of Blairsville. Mr. Muir was a son of the late George and Janet Muir and was born in Fairfield Twp. in 1860. He was one of a family of twelve children, seven of whom survive him as follows: Walter, Alex, Robert, William and Mrs. Fred Foust all of Fairfield Twp. James of Wallaceton, Clearfield County and Mrs. John W. Luther of Pittsburgh. He is also survived by four children, Mrs. Frank Henderson of Fairfield Twp., Flossie, Belle and Alex at home. Mr. Muir was a member of the Church of Christ, the Junior Order of United American Mechanics, the Patriotic Order Sons of America, and took an active interest in all, as well as anything that was for the wellfare of the community. Retired from Bethlehem Steel, member of Robinson Meth. Church. Elmer S. Frain, 86, of Robinson, died Wednesday Aug. 7, 1996 at Good Samaritan Medical Center, Johnstown. Mr. Frain was born Oct. 16, 1909 in West Wheatfield Twp., Indiana County son of the late William A. and Iva May Kelly Frain. He was retired from Bethlehem Steel and the Conemaugh and Black Lick Railroad and was a watchmaker. He also was a member of the Robinson Evangelical United Methodist Church. Survivors include children Elmer S. Jr., Robinson, Ralph and his wife Wanda, Bossier City, LA., Martha I. Doepfer, Johnstown and Mrs. Wilbert (Nellie) Short, Blairsville RD 3; five grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; Also surviving is his sister Mary Etta Baird, Blairsville RD 3. He was preceded in death by his wife Lillian L. Rager Frain; brothers Roy Ray, Norman Leroy, John, Edward, George, Ralph and Vincent; his sister Mary Luker. Friends will be received Friday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Stuart Funeral Home, New Florence. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Robinson EUM Church, Rev. Dwayne Burfield officiating. Interment will be in Mt. Tabor Cemetery, West Wheatfield Twp.

Robert G. Flickinger
FLICKINGER, Robert G., 73, Bolivar RD 1, Pa. died Saturday March 8, 1997 at Memorial Medical Center, Johnstown. Born Aug. 14, 1923 in Fairfield Twp., son of George H. and Nora (Betz) Flickinger. Preceded in death by parents; sister, Jean Muir, and brother, Joseph Flickinger. Survived by wife of 54 years, Nellie E. (Magnani) Flickinger; daughters; Mrs. John (Candace) Harris, Alexandria, Va. and Mrs. Jeffrey (Patricia) Rager, New Florence; sons Dennis L. (and his wife, Linda) Flickinger, Ligonier; George L. Flickinger, Bolivar RD 1; Joseph D. (and his wife, Lisa) Flickinger, New Florence; five grandchildren; sisters Marie Henderson and Ruth Mundorff, both of Bolivar RD 1; Gladys Spaugy, Anchorage, Alaska; and brother, Merel Flickinger, St. Louis, MO. Prior to his retirement in 1989, he had been employed as a coal miner by the R&P Coal Co. He was a veteran of World War II having served with the U.S. Army. JOHN FERENCE
John Ference, 70, of New Florence, died March 6, 2001 at HCR Manor Care, North Hills. He was born Aug. 3, 1930 in Boltz, son of Mike and Catherine Bartok Ference. He was a member of Armagh-Seward Presbyterian Church, and had served on the borough councils of Seward and New Florence. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, and was retired from Bethlehem Steel Corp. Johnstown Plant, Rod and Wire Division. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two sisters, Patricia and Mary Ference and two brothers, Mike Jr. and Steve Ference. He is survived by his wife, June Pizzino Ference; three daughters, Gloria (Mrs. James) Valeriano of Wexford, Kathy Ference of New Florence,and Patti (Mrs. Pat) May of Plymouth, N.H., and three grandchildren, Jamie, Mario, and Leah. Funeral service was held Saturday at Kenneth A. Stuart Funeral Home, New Florence, with the Rev. James M. Tomb officiating. Burial was in Germany Lutheran Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
