William (Frank) Titus, 72 of Nicely Street, died Saturday morning at 7:15 in the Nanticoke State Hospital, where he was admitted Thursday. He has bee in ill health the last three years.
Born August 11, 1888, he was the son of the late William and Margaret Nelson Titus. He spent his entire life in Shickshinny and attended the Borough schools and the Shickshinny Protestant Church. He was employed as a miner for 46 years by the Glen Alden Cola Company in Wanamie. He was the assistant chief of police of Shickshinny for six years, retiring two years ago. Mr. Titus was a member of the Police Executives Association of Pennsylvania.
Surviving are his wife, the former Lillian Vivian, daughters, Mrs. Robert Bridle, New Egypt, N. J. and Marcia, at home; sons Lamar with the Navy at Norfolk, VA Lynn with the Navy at London, England, and Roger, at home; step daughters, Mrs. Earl Reider, Mrs. Andrew Slembarski, Mrs. Jack Applebey and Mrs. Ervin Eisenhower, all of Shickshinny. step sons, Charles Hargraves, Montandon, PA, Bernard and Donald Hargraves, Shickshinny, Herbert Hargraves, Mountainview, N. J. and Walter Hargraves, of Shickshinny R.D.1; 31 grandchildren; and a half sister, Mrs. Helen Menne, Sunbury.
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 2 from the Robert Zofein Funeral Home, 38 North Main St. with the Rev., Warren Birdsall of the Shickshinny Protestant Church officiating. Interment was in the Reyburn Cemetery.
SHICKSHINNY WOMAN SURVIVED BY 11 CHILDREN
Lillian E. Titus, 94, of 54 W. Union St., Shickshinny died Tuesday evening Berwick Hospital Center Emergency room.
Born in Lee, PA June 30, 1899, she was the daughter of the late Ida Gross Vivian. She attended school in Jim Thorpe.
Her first husband, Charles Hargraves, died in 1931 and her second husband Frank Titus died May 14, 1960.
Mrs. Titus was a member of the First Baptist Church, Shickshinny. She was an aid bingo player and enjoyed crossword puzzles.
Surviving are seven sons; Bernard Hargraves, Berwick, Charles Hargraves, Walter Hargraves, and Donald Hargraves, all of Shickshinny. Lamar TITUS, El Canjon, Calif., Lynn Titus, Mocanaqua, and Roger Titus, of Shickshinny; four daughters, Mrs. Peter (Betty) Appleby, and Mrs. Jack (Marcia) Wall, both of Shickshinny, Mrs. Jake (Eileen) Switzer, Berwick, Mrs. Ervin (Barbara) Eisenhauer, Wapwallopen; 55 grandchildren; 97 great grandchildren; 12 great great grandchildren
Mrs. Titus was the last member of her immediate family.
She was preceded in death by two daughters; Jean Slembarski Shima, in December 1979 and Ruth Reider Oct 19 1983, and a son Herbert Hargraves, in December 1992.
Burial will be in the Sorber Cemetery, Reyburn from the Funeral Home of Joseph W. Nardi Berwick.
MALCOLM LAMAR TITUS
Navy Veteran served during Korean and Vietnam Wars.
Malcolm Lamar Titus, 64 of Benton, died early Wednesday morning Feb. 21, 2001 at the Bloomsburg Hospital, where he had been a patient since Thursday. He had the bee ill for the past two years. He had lived at his Benton home for the past year, and before that had lived in Shickshinny for a year.
Born September 25, 1936 in Shickshinny he was the son of the late William Frank and Lillian E. Vivian.
Titus educated in Shickshinny schools, he attended the former F.L. Garrison High School, Shickshinny. He enlisted in the Navy on July 27, 1954, at age 17, and retired July 1, 1974, serving during the Korean War and two tours of duty during the Vietnam War. Following his retirement from the Navy, he worked for the Civil Service at Mirmar Naval Air Station, Mirmar, Calif. retiring in 1996. He returned to this area in May 1999. Titus was a life member of the Benton VFW and a member of the Shickshinny American Legion and Berwick Elks Lodge #1138.
Following his retirement, he enjoyed fishing and traveling. Titus often worked as a groundskeeper at several campgrounds he visited.
A daughter Cindy Lee Titus, died April 4, 1957 in infancy. Five siblings also died previously, Ruth Reider, Jean Shima, Roger Titus, Herbert Hargraves Sr. and Thomas Titus.
He is survived by four children, Tammy S. Edwards, Montier, MO: Michael L. Titus, Berwick, Berwick; Mrs. Scotty (Deidre) McGee, Montier, MO and Donna M. Mensch, Danville; 10 grandchildren; five great grandchildren' and nine siblings:Betty Appleby, Shickshinny: Barbara Eisenhauer, Wapwallopen; Eileen J. Switzer and Mrs. Jack( Marcia) Wall, both of Berwick; Lynn Titus, Mocanaqua; Charles Hargraves, Shickshinny; Bernard Hargraves, Berwick' Lynn Titus, Mocanaqua: Charles Hargraves, Shickshinny, Bernard Hargraves, Berwick and Donald Hargraves and Walter Hargraves, both of Shickshinny.
According to Titus wishes, a military burial at sea will be conduced by the U.S. Navy

Funeral services will be at 9 p.m. Monday from the Mayo Funeral Home, Inc., 77 N. Main St., Shickshinny, with the Rev. Donald Miller retired United Methodist minister officiating.
Internment will be held at the convenience of the family in Sorber Cemetery, Reyburn.

George A. Titus ,82, of Short Beach Road, a fireman for Yale University for 18 years before his retirement 15 years ago, died Thursday at Yale-New Haven Hospital after a brief illness. He was the husband of the late Elizabeth Kline Titus.
Mr. Titus was born in Leighton, PA. March 22, 1896, son of the late Albert and Ida Gross Titus, and was a resident of Hamden and New Haven for many years before moving to East Haven.
He leaves five daughters, Mrs. Geraldine Minicozzi and Mrs. Ruth Modena, both of East Haven, Mrs. Arlene LaMarsk of North Bradford, Mrs. Betty Coppola of West Haven and Mrs. Bernice Calibritto of Durham; two sons, Russell W. Titus of New Haven and Albert D. Titus of North Haven; one sister Mrs. Lillian Titus of Pennsylvania and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
He was predeceased by two sons, George O. Titus and Kenneth Titus and four sisters Mrs. Mae Haydt, Mrs. Viola Lemon, Mrs. Ida Gensel and Mrs. Rose Yaple.
Funeral services will be held Saturday morning at 10:30 at the Hamden Memorial Funeral Home 1300 Dixwell Ave. with the Rev. Henry A. Cost, of the First Congregational Church of North Branford officiating. Burial will be in Beaverdale Memorial Park, New Haven

Paul T. Gross, 72, of Collingswood road, Fairless Hills for the last 21 years, died Sunday in Delaware Valley Hospital, Bristol Borough.
Mr. Gross was a retired employee of General Motors Turnstead Division in Trenton. He was a member of the American Legion Post 834 in Fallsington, of the United Auto Workers, and the Church of the Reformation, Newportville Road, Levittown.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy e. Gross, two sons, Paul J. of Spring Hope, N. C., George W. of West Wyoming, Pa, one daughter, Mrs. Harriet G. McCue of Morrisville and six grandchildren.

Arthur Gross, 73, died late Sunday afternoon at his home, on Chestnut St. (Shickshinny) following an illness of five months.
Surviving is a sister, Mrs. Lily Harden town; six nieces and eight nephew.
The funeral was held Wednesday at 2 from the Markle Funeral Home, 59 West Union street, rev. A> F. Birdsall, of the Protestant Church officiated. Interment was in Pine Hill Cemetery.
Rev. Birdsall read "Crossing the Bar. Abide With Me, the 23 rd Psalm and the 21st Chapter of St. John.

MRS. HARDEN, 84, SHICKSHINNY DIES
Mrs. Lillie Mae Harden (GROSS), 84, of 65 Fellows St. Shickshinny, died this morning at 1 in Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, where she was admitted January 2. She had been in ill health the past year.
Born in Shickshinny June 12 1884 she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Hannah Hobbes (Hoppes) Gross. She lived in the Shickshinny area a greater part of her life.
Mrs. Harden attended the Shickshinny Bible Baptist Church and was employed at Wyoming Seminary, Kingston, for some time before retiring 19 years ago.
She belonged to the Rebecca Lodge of Shickshinny. Her husband Daniel died in 1939.
Surviving are sons, Roy and Horace both of Harrisburg; Roscoe, Pringle; Schuyler, Duncannon; Joseph, Phillipsburg, N. J. Jessie. Columbia, Willard Wilkes-Barre, daughters, Mrs. Hannah Denn, Shickshinny, Mrs. Myrle Moses, R.D.1 Shickshinny, nine grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Monday morning at 11 from the Zofein Funeral Home, 38, North Main St., Shickshinny, with the Rev. Warren Birdsall, Shickshinny Bible Baptist Church officiating. Interment will be in Pine Hill Cemetery, Shickshinny.

Frank Kester inherited the farm of his uncles and a few years afterward built a new home some distance away. He conducted the farm for many years, later moved to Seybertville, and some fifteen years ago came to Nescopeck to make his home.
About his little cottage along the river bank he had many flowers in which he took great interest. He was an interested exhibitor in each flower show of the Berwick Garden Club. He lived apart in practical isolation except for the occasional visits by relatives.
Surviving are his mother, Mrs. Isabella Gross Sones of Hobbie who is 88 years of age. There is one daughter, Mrs. Edward Wagner, of Hazleton, two step sisters and one step brother, Mrs. John Hower, of Nescopeck and Mrs. John Walp of Pond Hill and George Sones in the West. His age was 67 years.
Funeral services will be held Monday morning from the home of his step sister, Mrs. Hower of Nescopeck. Further details have not been arranged.

Surviving are two sons. Wilbur and Stanley both of this city. Wilbur operates Bob's Sporting Goods store on North Wyoming Street and Stanley is controller of the Standard Speaker.

Mrs. Isabella Soan, 89, who died on Tuesday at her home at Hobbie, will be buried this afternoon with services at 2 in Hobbie Lutheran Church. Interment will be in church cemetery.
Surviving are three children, Mrs. J. W. Walp, Pond Hill: Mrs. John Hower, Nescopeck; George, Baltimore. Her sister, Mrs.(should be Miss) Mary Gross. 92, Reading, also survives. She leaves 20 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.

Services were held in Oregon for Berwick native.
Eugene "Gene" Vandermark, 80, of Selma, Ore. died Oct 7, 2002 at his home.
Born April 19, 1922, in the family home in Berwick, he was the son of the late Leslie and Clara Hower Vandermark.
As a young man, he sang in a roving church choir visiting Berwick area churches on Sundays.
Mr. Vandermark served four years in the Army during World War II, attaining the rank of sergeant.
On June 5, 1943, at McClellan Air Force Base, Sacramento, Calif. he married his wife of 59 years, Dora Lee (Dodie) Vandermark.
After his discharge from the service, they moved to riverside, Calif. where Mr. Vandermark worked as a baker, foundry man, plumber, police officer and meat cutter. They moved to Selma in 1972, where the family opened Der Pinxster Housen Family Restaurant. Following its closing, he owned and operated Van's Custom Cutting.
After his retirement from the meat cutting business, Mr. Vandermark started I. V. Open Door in Selma in 1995, to help the needy of the area.
He had been a member of the Illinois Valley Lions Club in Oregon.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters; Frieda Mortan, Riverside; Vikki Jones, Selma; and Genie Gillian. Broodings, Oregon; a son John "Sam" Vandermark, Napa Valley, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren; a sister Dorothy Keifer and two brothers, Ray and Roger Vandermark all of Pennsylvania,

SUCCUMBS TO ILLNESS
John William Walp, 75, of R. D. 1 Pond Hill section of Wapwallopen, died yesterday at 3:30 at his home following a six month illness. He had been a medical patient at he Geisinger Medical Center, Danville for four weeks in the later part of April and May.
He was born in Wapwallopen R. D. 1 August 24, 1886, a son of the late Aaron and Mary Gearhart Walp. He was a life resident of the Pond Hill area and attended Wapwallopen school.
Walp was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Pond Hill, and was active in church and civic affairs. He was owner and operator of Walp's General Store in Pond Hill, and was a member of Odd Fellows Lodge 695 of Slocum and Junior Mechanics Lodge of Pond Hill. He and his wife the former Ellen Sones of Hobbie celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary last August.
Surviving in addition to his wife are a son, Palmer, Wapwallopen R.D. 1, three grandchildren and six great grandchildren
Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 2 from St. Mark;'s Lutheran Church with Rev. Charles Steinhauer and Rev. Clark Heller, retired Lutheran minister officiating. Interment in Pond Hill Cemetery. Friends may call Wednesday afternoon after 4 at the funeral home, 38 North Main Street Shickshinny. The body will be removed to St. Marks; Church Thursday morning where it will lie in state until 1:30.

Rites were held at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Pond Hill with Rev. Charles Steinhauer of Hobbie Lutheran Church and Rev. Clark Heller retired Lutheran minister officiating. Interment was in Pond Hill Cemetery. Services were held last nigh at the Zofein Funeral Home 38 North Main St. Shickshinny by the Odd Fellows Lodge of Slocum and the Jr. OUAM of Pond Hill.
Pallbearers were Russell Lutz, John Rhinehimer, William Grosz, Grant Ogin, Ernest Frostbutter and Frank Peters, members of Odd Fellows Lodge 695, Oakdale.

Palmer E. Walp, 86 of Cunningham Township (Pond Hill) died Saturday at his sons home in Pond Hill.
Born in Berwick, Sept 29, 1911, he was the son of the late John W. and Ellen Mae Soan Walp.
He owned Walp's Inn, Pond Hill, for many years and was employed by the American Car and Foundry Plant, Berwick.
He was also employed by Sprague and Henwood, Scranton.
He was a former active member of the Pond Hill-Lily Lake Ambulance and Fire Company.
Surviving are his sons Leroy, Pond Hill, Edward Walp, Bradenton, Fla., daughter Mrs. James (Rosellen) Rank, Nazareth, ten grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and one great great granddaughter.
Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family.
There will be no calling hours.
Interment will be in St. Mark's Cemetery, Pond Hill.

Mrs. Catherine Kelly, 88, a former local resident, who lived with her sin-in'law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. James Sherman, 623 Milton St. Easton, was dead on arrival yesterday morning at the Easton Hospital. She had been ill for four months.
Born in Milnesville July 10, 1884, the deceased was a daughter of the late Albert and Mary (Minnich) gross. She once had been employed at the former Madison Restaurant, this city.
She had lived in Easton for 10 years.
She was a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ, West Hazleton. Her husband Thomas, preceded her in death in 1945.
Surviving are two daughters, Ethel Kelley, Easton, and Mrs. James (Leona) Sherman, with whom she resided; a son, Joseph McGarry, Lattimer; four step children, Mrs. Martha Bilder and Mrs. Ida Hosier, Saylorsburg; George Kelley, Easton, and William Kelley, Washington, New Jersey; a number of grandchildren; two sisters Mrs. Harriet Uplinger and Mrs. Florence Swinesburg, Greentown; and a brother, Albert Gross, West Orange, New Jersey.
The funeral will be held Saturday at 11 am from the Grebey, Beltz and Gleim Funeral Home. The Rev. Richard Abernethy, of St. Paul's United Church of Christ will officiate and interment will be Mountain View Cemetery. Friends may call today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm.

MRS. EVELYN M. CULL /survived by 63
Mrs. Evelyn M. Cull, 341 W. Birch St. Hazleton, died Monday evening at Hospice St. John's Wilkes-Barre.
Born in Milnesville, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Harriet (Gross) Hall.
She was a member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Weatherly and of the Weatherly VFW Ladies Auxiliary Post 8122.
Preceding her in death was her Lawrence, who died in 1963.
Surviving are seven daughters, Mrs. John (Lois) Sube, Freeland, Mrs. Jacob (Ruth) Hons, Hazleton, Altheada Cull, Orangeville, Mrs. Debra Salvaterra, Denver, Mrs. Joy Petrosky, Lattimer, Mrs. Robert (Donna) Hildenbrand, Hazleton; Kimerly Belusko, at home; four sons, Robert, Freeland, Raymond, West Hazleton, Lawrence Jr. Hazleton, James, Hazleton; 30 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be held Wednesday at 11 am from the Beltz-Petrilli Funeral Home. Internment will be in the Mount Laurel Memorial Park.
