MOTORIST, 39, KILLED AS CAR MISSES CURVE
A 39 year old Benton resident was killed early Sunday in a one car accident on route 93 in Nescopeck Borough.
Nescopeck Borough Police identified the victim as DONALD AVERY, Park Street who was pronounced dead on arrival at Berwick Hospital. Death was attributed to chest injuries.
According to police, Avery was traveling south on Route 93 at a high rate of speed when he failed to negotiate a turn. His vehicle went off the road, down a slight embankment and struck some railroad tracks. Avery was thrown forward into the steering wheel and dashboard.
Investigating was Officer Barry Firearm assisted by Chief Jay Mc Geary.
Born Feb. 25, 1937 in Patterson Grove. Fairmont Township. Avery resided the past six years at Benton and was employed by Hanover Brands, Bloomsburg.
Surviving are his widow, the former June Bowser, daughters, Donna L. Debra L. at home, stepfather Arthur Hilley, Benton, sisters, Mrs. Marian Savorie, Nescopeck, Mrs. Elaine Bowman, Berwick, Mrs. Barbara Edwards, Mrs. Joan Holoman, Huntington Mills, Mrs. Sheila Beck, Wapwallopen, Mrs. Ruby Hanford, West New York, N.J. brothers Beach KAuffman, Indiana, David Hilley, Cambra, Allan Hilley, Hunlock Creek.
Funeral will be Wednesday at 2 from Clark Pratt Funeral Home, Sunset Road, Hunlock Creek, with Rev. Daniel Dennis pastor, Harveyville United Methodist Church officiating. Interment in Fairmont Cemetery, FaIrmont Springs.

Edith E. Hargraves 74 a resident of the Valley Crest Nursing Home, Plains Township formerly of McClintock Street, Shickshinny, died Wednesday at the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.
Born Aug 26, 1928, in Shickshinny, she was the daughter of the late Roy and Grace (Cope) Andrews. She was a 1946 graduate of Shickshinny High School. She was employed at the Russels Ice Cream Parlor, the Luzerne Outerwear Plant, Shickshinny and Kings Sportswear, Mocanaqua. She was a member of the first Presbyterian Church of Shickshinny,
She was preceded in death by brother Arthur and sisters Arlen Stepanski and Francis Husted.
Surviving are her husband of 54 years , Donald B. Sr.; a son Donald N. Jr.' Shickshinny, a step granddaughter; three step great grand children and sister Janet Kessler, Shickshinny Lake.
Funeral services will be at 11 am Saturday from the Mayo Funeral Home Inc. 77 N. Main Street, Shickshinny, with the Rev. Charles Hooker, Jr. officiating. Interment will be in Pine Hill Cemetery, Shickshinny.

Betty Applebey, 80 of West Union Street, Shickshinny died Monday at Berwick Hospital Center.
Born Aug 30 1923 in Shickshinny, she was a daughter of the late Charles Hargraves and Lillian E. (Vivian) Hargraves Titus. She was employed by the former Ronnie Dress factory and the former Luzerne Outerwear Plant both of Shickshinny.
She was preceded in death by a step father, Frank Titus, husband Jack E., a son Jack Reiss; brothers Herbert Hargraves St. Bernard Hargraves, Lamar, Roger and Thomas Titus, sisters Ruth Reider, Jean Shima and Barbara Eisenhauer.
Surviving are her son, Fran, Huntington Mills; daughters, Jean Switzer and Debbie Mowery both of Shickshinny, 13 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren; brothers Charles Hargraves, Shickshinny, Donald Hargraves, Shickshinny, Walter Hargraves, Muhlenburg; Lynn Titus, Mocanaqua; sisters, Eileen Switzer and Marcia Wall, both of Berwick.
Funeral services will be at 11 am Friday, from the Mayo Funeral Home Inc. 77 N. Main Street, Shickshinny with the Rev. Jane Hess officiating.
Interment will be in Sorber Cemetery in Reyburn.

Wildfred "Green" Shima, age 85, a resident of Plains Township, formerly of Georgetown, Wilkes-Barre Township, died Saturday December 25, 2004
Mr. Shima was born in Wilkes-Barre Township, son of the late Andrew and Mary (Grivner) Shima and was a graduate of St. Joseph's Elementary School class of 1933. He attended Wilkes-Barre Township High School and had served in the Civilian Conservation Corps for some time. He was a member of the Merchant Marine and of the National Maritime Union, New York City, He had spent 23 years at sea and had been involved in shipping during World War 2, the Arab-Israeli War of 1948, the Korean War and the Vietnam conflict, prior to his retirement in 1965. He was a member of St. Joseph's Church, Wilkes-Barre Township and the Catholic War Veterans Post, Ashley.
He was preceded in death by his wife, the former JEAN HARGRAVESS, and sisters, Maris Croughn and Euphemia Shima.
Surviving are several nieces and nephews and cousins.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at a later date at the convenience of the family at St. Joseph's Church, Wilkes-Barre, Township.
Interment will be in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville. At his request, there will be no calling hours. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of the donors choice. Arrangements are by the H. Merrit Hughes Funeral Home, Inc. 451 N. Main St. Wilkes-Barre.

LaVena (Gardner) Hargraves, 56, formerly of Shickshinny, died Thursday in Bellevue Hospital, New York City.
Born Sept 4 1936, in Shickshinny, she was a graduate of Shickshinny High School, class of 1955. She resided in Sussex, N. J. for the past 35 years.
She worked in the S.S. Diner, Sussex, for the past 16 years until her retirement.
She was a former member of thee Bible Baptist Church, Shickshinny.
Surviving are her mother, Ellen Gardner Peckne, Berwick; sons, Herbert Hargraves Jr. RR3, Shickshinny; Vincent Hargraves, Susssex. N. J. ; Mickey Hargraves, RR3 Shickshinny; Gordon Hargraves, Shickshinny; three grandchildren; brother, Henry Kile, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.
Funeral services will be 1 pm. pm. Monday from the Mayo Funeral Home Inc. 77 N. Main St., Shickshinny, with the Rev. Warren M. Birdsall pastor of the Bible Baptist Church, officiating.
Interment will be in Sorber Cemetery, Rayburn.

Ellen (Gardner) Peckne, 91, formerly of the Evan Owen's Apartments, Berwick, died Thursday at the Bonham Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Register, were she resided for the past 1 1/2 years.
Born March 17, 1910, in Berwick, she was a daughter of the late Edward and Bertha (Featherman) Gardner. She worked at the former A. C. & F. plant, Berwick, during World War 2 and last worked for the Bloomsburg Mill, retiring in 1972. She wasa membeer of the Bible Baptist Church, SHickshinny, and Beerwick Women of the Moosse since 1955.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, LaVenna Hargraves; son Henry Kile; half brother, John Boyer; and sisters Dorothy and Letha Fink and Hilda Harvey.
Funeral services will be at 11 a. m. Saturday from the Mayo Funeral Home, Inc., 77 N. Main Street., Shickshinny, with the rev. Daniel Potter officiating. Interment will be in Sorber Cemetery, Reyburn.

BETHLEHEM, Leona W. Sherman 75, formerly of Easton died Friday Jan. 21 in Leader Nursing and Rehabilitation center 2, where she had been a resident since December.
Born Jan. 23 1918, in Hazleton she was a daughter of the late Thomas and Catherine Gross Kelley.
She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Easton.
She was a 1934 graduate of West Hazleton High School. Her husband James, died June 4, 1989.
She is survived by a son, James R. of Easton; a daughter, Janet L.. Johnson of Easton; a sister Ethel A. Kelly of Easton; eight grandchildren and eight great grandchildren,
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Strunk Funeral Home 602 W. Berwick St. Easton. Call between 1 and 2 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home.
Burial will be in South Easton Cemetery

Joseph P. McGarry, House 86, Back Street, Lattimer Mines, died Thursday afternoon at the Hazleton St. Joseph Medical Center.
Born in Milnesville, he was a son of the late Martin and Catherine Gross McGarry and had lived in this area all his life.
He was a member of St. Mary's Church, Lattimer Mines; the United Mine Workers of America, Hazle Township Senior Citizens and had also served with the U.S.> Army during his youth.
He was last employed as a truck driver by the Hazle Township Road Department for a period of five years before his retirement 12 years ago.
He had previously been employed as a cola miner by the Lattimer Coal Co. and also by the Humboldt Coal CO. for a period of some years.
He was preceded in death by a son Leo and a brother LeRoy.
Surviving are his wife, the former Helen Cipriano; the following sons and daughters, Joseph Jr. Ridgewood; Mrs. Robert (Helen) Faust, Hazel ton' Mrs. Clarence (Anna Mae) Brown, Bensalem; James, Hazel ton; Gerald, Lattimer Mines; Mrs. Charles(Patricia) Tokash, Hazleton. 11 grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday from the Fierro Funeral Home with a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Mary's Church at 9:30. Interment will be in the Calvary Cemetery, Drums.
