Joyce A. Kuhns Vandetti
DELAWARE - Joyce A. Kuhns Vandetti, 73, of Cheswold, DE, died in Christiana Hospital Sunday Sept. 1, 2002.
Born Feb. 25, 1929, in Woodland, she was a daughter of the late Forrie Blaine Kuhns and Edna Mae (Folk) Kuhns. Her husband, James Paul Vandetti preceded her in death in 1989.
Surviving are: six children, Chris Lowman, Smyrna, DE, James Vandetti, Clayton, DE, Tammy Vandetti, Cheswold, DE, Melonie Jarman, Little Creek, DE, Nick Vandetti, Cheswold, DE, and Forrie Vandetti, Camden, DE; eight brothers and sisters, Donna Mitchell, Clifford Kuhns, Robert Kuhns, Patsy Kratzer, Barbara Fultz, Connie Griffith, Nancy Bell and Richard Kuhns, all of Pennsylvania, 15 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by: a son, Robert Roy; two brothers, Thomas and William Kuhns; a grandson, James Edward Lowman; and a granddaughter, Billie Joe Lowman.
She was a homemaker and a loving mother, friend and Gram to all that knew her and she will be sadly missed.

Mary P. VanHorn
MILLERSTOWN - Mary Priscilla VanHorn, 77, of 14 N. High St., Millerstown, entered into eternal rest Thursday, Nov. 14, 2002, in the Harrisburg Hospital, where she had been a surgical patient since Nov. 10.
Born May 20, 1925, in Liverpool Township, Perry County, she was the daughter of the late Maynard and Charlotte (Willi) Noll.
Surviving are a son, Steven M. VanHorn, husband of Vicki, of HCR Mifflin; a daughter, Glenda J. Auker, wife of Tom, of Dauphin; a grandson, Brian Price; three step-grandchildren, Tammy Zarkovich, Shawn O'Neill and Kathleen Mitten; eight step-great-grandchildren; a brother, John Noll of RR1, Newport; three sisters, Ardella Rumberger of Millerstown, Dorothy Klimenko of Glenn Dale, MD and Caroline Piper of Liverpool; and two generations of nieces and nephews.
She attended Liverpool High School. She worked at the former Zimmies Restaurant, Mifflin-town, and the Peppermill Inn, Reedsville, and managed the Thompsontown Hotel Restaurant and, most recently, Stop 35, Mifflintown. She retired in 1986, after 17 1/2 years employed as a clerk for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.
She was a member of the East Salem United Methodist Church, East Salem, and also of the Women of the Moose, Post 925, Millerstown.
She enjoyed playing bingo, watching game shows and especially spending time with her family and many friends.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday from the George P. Garman Funeral Home, 606 N. Front St., Liverpool, with Rev. Dr. Ronald Parks officiating. Interment will follow in Liverpool Union Cemetery, Liverpool.
Family and friends will gather for a viewing 7-9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Sara Jean Varish
BRADENTON, FL - Sara Jean Varish, 84, formerly of Spartansburg, died Dec. 9, 2002, at Black Medical Center after a short illness.
She was born April 7, 1918, in Lewistown, she was a daughter of the late Arthur J. and Lulu (Shellhamer) Walters. Her husband, Thomas preceded her in death in 1995.
Surviving are: a son, Richard Varish, Gettysburg; and a daughter of Spartansburg; a sister, Marian Dagnell, Belleville; a brother, Arthur D. Walters, York; a brother, Joseph R. Walters, Back Maitland Rd. McClure; five grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.
She retired from Associated Spring-Barns Group.
A graveside memorial service will be held Jan. 4th in Cory, PA.
Kenneth D. 'Kenny' Varner
LEWISTOWN - Kenneth D. "Kenny" Varner, 74, of Lockport Road, Lewistown, died at 1:25 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 26, 2002, at Hershey Medical Center.
Born May 27, 1928, in Huntingdon County, he was a son of the late David S. and Dorothy (Byers) Varner. His wife, Emma M. (Casner) Varner, preceded him in death on July 8, 1997.
Surviving are: a companion, Frances Rupp, Lewistown; six children, Mrs. Melvin (Mary Jane) Fultz, Betty Fortney, James K. Varner, Judy M. Varner, all of Lewistown, Donald L. Varner of McVeytown and Andrew D. Varner of Lewistown; nine brothers and sisters, Irene Brenneman, Mt. Union, Charles Varner, Mill Creek, Orne Varner, Ralph Varner, Mrs. James (Genevieve) Estep, Oliver Varner, Mrs. Melvin (Catherine) McCartney, all of Star Route, Huntingdon, Stanley Varner, Huntingdon, and Mrs. Rodney (Florence) Chilcote, Cassville; ten grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Timothy A. Varner, of Aug. 1, 1960; two brothers, Bernard Varner and Arthur Varner; and a granddaughter, Sherry Moser, on May 10, 2000.
Early in life he was employed at Harbison-Walker Refractories, Mt. Union. He was employed for 36 years at Arrow Shirt Factory, Lewistown, and last worked for J.M. Young's in Belleville.
He attended the Salvation Army, Lewistown, where he was a member of the Men's Club and a volunteer in the thrift shop for many years.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and woodworking.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Harshbarger Funeral Home, 3 S. Market St., McVeytown, with Rev. Joseph Byers and Major Eddie Purvis officiating. Interment will be in Wright's Cemetery, Calvin.

Lewis L. Varner III
YORK - Lewis L. Varner, 26, of 943 Linden Ave., York, formerly of Lewistown, died at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 21, 2002, at University of Maryland Medical Center, Baltimore, MD, as a result of a work accident.
Born Sept. 10, 1975, in Lewistown, he was a son of Lewis L. and Frances (Keicer) Varner Jr., of 210 E. Freedom Ave., Burnham.
Also surviving are: Paternal grandmother, Joyce Romig Varner, 900 Heinamann Ave., Lewistown; a sister, Katrina M. Varner, Lewistown; and a niece, Kirsten M. Powell, Lewistown.
He was a 1995 graduate of Lewistown High School.
He was employed as a welder for Kinsley Construction Company.
He was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church. He loved playing baseball and hunting with his father. He loved his niece "Tubs" and spending time with friends and family.
His funeral as service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Hoenstine Funeral Home Inc., 75 Logan St., Lewistown, with the Rev. Thomas Marickovic officiating. Interment will be in Mt. Rock Cemetery.

Martin A. Varner
EAST WATERFORD - Martin A. Varner, 87, of RR1, East Waterford, died Friday, Nov. 1, 2002, at his home.
Born Nov. 14, 1914, in Mt. Union, he was the son of the late James M. and Alva (Shore) Varner. His wife, Ruth (Jones) Varner, survives.
Also surviving are: two sons, Martin S. Varner, Blairs Mills and George T. Varner, Mifflintown; a brother, George Varner, RR1, East Waterford; three sisters, Sarah Clayton, Mercersburg, Pearl Burdge and Dorothy Fultz, both of RR1, East Waterford; three grandchildren and four great-granddaughters.
He was preceded in death by a brother, James Varner.
He was a retired Asst. Superintendent for PennDOT.
He attended Rock Assembly of God Church, HC 67, Mifflin and was a member of East Waterford Fire Company and Lack Tuscarora EMS.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday from his church with Revs. Robert Varner, Harvey Fry, and Paul Parrish officiating. Interment will be in Book Cemetery, Richvale.
A viewing will be from 2-9 p.m. Monday at Henry Funeral Home, Honey Grove, the family will be present from 7-9 p.m.
Patricia C. 'Pat' Varner
NEWTON HAMILTON - Patricia C. "Pat" Varner, 49, of Newton Hamilton Campgrounds died on Saturday, Dec. 21, 2002, at her home.
Born Nov. 17, 1953, in Harrisburg, to the late George Reed and Betty (Palmer) McClellan. Her husband, Rick E. Varner, survives at home.
Also surviving are four sons, Tim and Johnny Snook of Lewistown and Ricky Varner Jr. and Ryan Varner at home; two brothers and a sister.
She was a former employee of Wal-Mart, Lewistown.
She attended Lewistown High School.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, at the Robert D. Heath Funeral Home, Mt. Union, with Pastor Connie Maclay officiating. Interment will be in Newton Hamilton Cemetery.

Vown Wesley Varner
MCALISTERVILLE - Vown Wesley Varner, 80, of RR2, McAlisterville, died at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002, at his home.
Born May 5, 1921 in Fayette Township, Juniata County, he was the son of the late Frank and Elizabeth (Burris) Varner. His wife, Helen Marie (Auker) Varner, whom he married Nov. 16, 1942, survives.
Also surviving are: a son, Dalton E. Varner and his wife Ruth Ann, Stevens, PA, a daughter, Kathleen L. Sheaffer and her husband Gary, Richfield; a sister, Mary Strawser, Millerstown, and a brother, Vernon Varner, Richfield; four grandchildren, Kevin Varner, Manheim, Crystal Garcia, Stevens, PA, Nathan Varner, Greenfield Park, NY, and Jason Sheaffer, McAlisterville, and two great-grandchildren, Joshua Dalton Varner and Grace Kathleen Sheaffer.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Victor Burris, Jerome Varner, Marlin Varner, and three sisters, Margaret Hood, Ella Strawser and Iona Sierer.
He attended the Red Bank School.
He was a member of the St. John's United Methodist Church, RR2, McAlisterville, where he was a member of the Men's Adult Sunday School Class and was a past Sunday School Treasurer. He was a loving grandfather, who enjoyed hunting, fishing and working in his orchard.
He was a retired, self-employed dairy farmer.
He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving in the European and African Theaters during WW II.
His funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. John's United Methodist Church, RR2, McAlisterville, with his Pastor, the Rev. Ronald E. Landis officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery, RR2, McAlisterville.

EAST WATERFORD - Pauline D. Vawn, 83, of RR1, East Waterford, died at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, June 8, 2002, at her home.
Born March 15, 1919, in Lack Township, Juniata County, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Florence (Shoop) Vawn.
Surviving are: a sister, Mary Peck, Roxbury; and a nephew, Barry Vawn, RR1, East Waterford, with whom she resided.
She was a member of Cross Keys United Methodist Church and Ever Ready Sunday School Class.
Her funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Henry Funeral Home, Honey Grove. Interment will be in the McCullochs Mills Cemetery.

Henrietta B. Slack Veitch
BELLEVILLE - Henrietta B. Slack Veitch, 87, of Belleville, formerly of Irwin, PA, died Sunday Sept. 1, 2002, in Valley View Haven, Belleville.
Born Nov. 23, 1914, in Irwin, a daughter of the late Joseph Brower and Susan L. LeFever Slack. Her husband, Charles J. "Joe" Veitch, preceded her in death on March 18, 1984.
Surviving are: two daughters, Carol J. Veitch, McVeytown, Kathleen L. Frank, Sewell, NJ; one sister Susan A. Hahn of Irwin; also nieces and nephews.
She was preceded by: infant daughter, Nancy Ann Veitch; two brothers, Leon and Frank Slack; and a sister, Katherine Slack.
She was a graduate of Norwin High School, Class of 1932.
She was a long time member of the First United Methodist Church, Irwin, where she taught in the nursery department for over 30 years.
She was currently a member of the McVeytown Presbyterian Church.
A funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the William Snyder Funeral Home, 521 Main Street, Irwin with the Rev. Evelyn Wald officiating. Interment will follow in the Long Run Cemetery, North Huntingdon Township.

Edda Grassmyer Vergara
ARLINGTON, VA - Edda Grassmyer Vergara, 62, of Falls Church, VA, died at 10 p.m. Sunday, March 31, 2002, at Northern Virginia Regional Hospital in Arlington, VA of Mantle Cell Lymphoma.
Born Nov. 11, 1939, in Lewistown, she was the daughter of the late Samuel C. and Edith (Snyder) Grassmyer.
Surviving are a daughter, E. Christina Andrews of Los Angeles, CA; a son, Mark A. Vergara of Falls Church, VA; two sisters, Phyllis (Drewett) Clinger and Jacquelyn (Grassmyer) Fisher, both of Lewistown; a grandson, Andrew M. Vergara of Annandale, VA; a former husband, Alfonso I. Vergara of McClean, VA; a paternal uncle, Albert Grassmyer of the Lewistown area; a paternal aunt, Fannie Cherry of the Lewistown area; and numerous cousins from Lewistown, McVeytown and Huntingdon County.
She was baptized into the Methodist Church at Lake Park United Methodist Church, Lewistown, as a child.
She was a 1957 honor graduate of Lewistown High School and a 1961 graduate of Juniata College, where she received a bachelor of science in biology.
She was previously employed in the laboratory of the District of Columbia General Hospital and later at U.S.A.F. hospital in Madrid, Spain. She and her former husband then opened an internal medicine practice in Arlington, VA, where she worked as office manager.
Edda took classes at George Mason University in northern Virginia and passed the Virginia state exam to become a certified public accountant.
She worked in various positions in the private industry, the American Chiropractic Association and the Arlington County Dept. of Finance.
She also worked as a realtor with Mt. Vernon Realty and founded Top Notch Cleaning Services, which she later sold.
Olde Town Cremation Services, Alexandria, VA, was in charge of her cremation and a memorial service was held on April 5 at nearby Bon Air Baptist Church. The service was designed by Edda's children and son-in-law, Timm Andrews, and included music, readings, tributes from friends, photographs and slides of her life.
