Mabel R. McGinnis-Bennett
Mabel R. McGinnis-Bennett, 87,
of Boyers, died Sunday morning,
April 11, 2004, in St. Joseph Hospital,
Warren, Ohio, following an
extended illness.
Born Sept. 11, 1916, in Higgins
Corners, Butler County, she was
the daughter of John K. and Lottie
Elena Seelbaugh Montgomery.
She was a graduate of the former
Eau Claire High School and the
Butler Business College.
For a number of years, she was
employed as a bookkeeper with
various businesses.
Later, while she and her husband
lived in California, she became a
graduate of Mount San Jacinto Junior
College in San Jacinto, Calif. In
the early .1970s she matriculated at
the University of California in Riverside,
Calif., graduating with a degree
in English.
Mrs. McGinnis, as she was
known in the Eau Claire area, published
two novels under the titles,
'Life With George,'' and the second,
'Love Offering.' In addition
to the novels, she was accomplished
with many newspaper articles
in California and western
Pennsylvania as well as many unpublished
manuscripts authored by
her.
In the early 1950s, she provided
Hawaiian guitar and piano renditions
on Radio WlSR in Butler, appearing
live on the radio broadcast
with many other local musicians.
She was well-known for her
chalk-talk presentations at
churches and other functions including
schoolroom work, along
with an extensive display of selfcreated
painting.
With a continual love of travel,
she embarked for an extensive tour
of the Holy Land in January 1988.
In 1998, along with 17 family
members, she enjoyed a life- long
dream of touring much of Alaska.
Along with trips to Canada and
Mexico, she was proud to have visited
every state in the continental
United States.
In 1996, at the age of 80, she enjoyed
an 8,OOO-mile tour of the
United States and in 2000, she traveled
to Kansas City for a family
member’s wedding. Much of her
life found her a member of the
Bethel United Methodist Church in
Eau Claire, although she faithfully
attended many other churches
across the country where her life
took her to live.
In the early 1950s, she placed
second in the National Bible Contest
held annually in New York,
earning her an extensive award of
individual books and lessons of the
holy Bible.
Surviving are four sons, Bryan
McGinnis of North Shore, Calif.,
John D. McGinnis of Chicora,
Daniel McGinnis of Boyers and
Ronald C. McGinnis of Karns City;
nine grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren;
seven great-grandchildren;
two step-great- grandchildren;
and a number of nieces and
nephews. She also is survived by
two sisters, Mrs. Beryl (Deane)
Hovis of Lake Milton, Ohio, and
Mrs. Beryle (Ramona) Ivell of
Harrisville; and one brother, James
Montgomery of Ravenna, Ohio.
She first was married Oct. 1,
1938, in Bethel United Methodist
Church, Eau Claire, to George H.
McGinnis, who died Aug. 26,1988.
On Sept. 11, 1998, in the same
church, she married Josiah 'Joe'
Bennett, who died March 3, 1999.
In addition to her parents and
husbands, she was preceded in
death by three brothers, Ronald
'Buss,' John E. and Boyd Montgomery;
and one great-grandson.
Friends called at the Jack Buzard
Funeral Home in Eau Claire.
Funeral services were held at 11
a.m. Thursday, April 15, 2004 in
the funeral home.
Interment was in Big Bend Cemetery
near Emlenton.
Dorothy Chambers Lesko
Dorothy Chambers Lesko, 63, of
Struthers, Ohio, formerly of Emlenton,
died at 4:08 am Wednesday,
April 28, 2004, in St. Elizabeth
Hospital, Youngstown, Ohio,
following an illness.
Born on December 28,1940, in
Emlenton, she was the daughter of
John L. and Goldie McQuiston
Chambers.
Mrs. Lesko was a 1958 graduate
of Emlenton High School.
In earlier years, Mrs. Lesko was
employed by the former Hemlock
Inn near Emlenton and later at
Tarr’s Restaurant in Parker. She
then worked for 12 years at the IGA
Grocery Store in Emlenton.
Mrs. Lesko enjoyed gardening as
a hobby. She was Catholic by faith.
Surviving are three daughters,
Carol Ann Chambers of Emlenton,
Donna Marie Lesko of Parker area
and Barbara Lesko of Struthers,
Ohio; one grandchild; and one
great-grandchild.
She also is survived by one sister,
Barbara Baroletti, of Struthers,
Ohio; two brothers, Donald Chambers
of Washington State; and
James Chambers of Florida State;
and a number of nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Lesko was preceded in
death by her parents and her husband,
William Lesko.
Friends were received at the H.
Jack Buzard Funeral Home, in Eau
Claire. Interment was held in the
Perryville Cemetery near Parker.
Martha M. Rhoades
Martha M. Rhoades, 86, of Emlenton
RD 1, died Monday
evening, May 3, 2004, in UPMC
Northwest, Franklin.
Born June 21, 1917, in Grove
City, she was the daughter of
Clarence and Clara Rodawalt
Gibson. She was a 1935 graduate
of Grove City High School.
Mrs. Rhoades had worked for
Howes Coffee Co. in Grove City
where she met her husband, Richard
G. Rhoades, who survives.
They were married Apri1 29, 1938,
and they celebrated their 66th wedding
anniversary this year.
She and her husband bought their
present family farm, Dick-Mar
Farms, in 1943 and have continued
to operate it to the present day.
Mrs. Rhoades was a member of
thePennsylvania Farm Bureau and
in the past had served as a member
of the board and had served as the
state women’s committee chairman.
She was the only woman recipient
in 1996 for Distinguished
Service to Agriculture.
She also was a member of the
Venango County 4-H where she
was a leader for 30 years and was a
member for many years of the Venango
County Fair. She also belonged
to the Richland Grange at
Emlenton RD 1.
Mrs. Rhoades was a member of
the Salem Lutheran Church in
Lamartine where she was very active
for more than 60 years as Sunday
school teacher, Bible School
teacher and director of the
children’s choir. She also was a
member of the Women of ELCA in
the church.
Surviving, in addition to her husband,
are two daughters, Ann
Cheers and husband, Richard, and
Elaine Anderson and husband,
David, and one son, David
Rhoades and wife, Becky, all of
Emlenton; five granddaughters,
Aimee Cheers, Christine
Terwilliger, Susyn Klingler, Jessica
Anderson and Jaimee Anderson;
two grandsons, Jeff Rhoades
and Greg Cheers; and six greatgrandchildren,
Faith, Korben,
Emilee, Paige, Madison and Jacob.
A sister, Esther Perdue of Volant;
a sister-in-law, Ethel Gibson of
Florida; and a number of nieces and
nephews also survive her.
In addition to her parents, an infant
daughter, Nancy Martha, preceded
Mrs. Rhoades in death in
1952.

Daisy Mae Horn Tremba
Daisy Mae Horn Tremba, 97, of
Parker died Monday evening, May
3, 2003 at Chicora Medical Center,
where she lived for a few years.
Born Feb. 27, 1907, in
Brandonville, Schuylkill County,
she was the daughter of Leo D. and
Pearl Suzanne Kahley Horn.
She attended the Philadelphia
School for Christian Workers, now
part of Princeton University, for
three years. She then worked for
City Missions of New York City
for years and later worked at the
Reformed Church Orphanage in
Greenville.
Mrs. Tremba was a member of
the Parker United Methodist
Church and the United Methodist
Women, where she served as president
for two years and treasurer for
25 years. She also taught the
Searchlight Sunday School Class
for adults, headed the Primate Sunday
School Department for years
and was instrumental with the annual
vacation Bible school for decades.
She also was a member of
the church choir, the music committee,
the kitchen crew and other
duties at the church.
Surviving are three sons, Alan
Neil Tremba of North Cambria,
Karl Duane Tremba of Parker and
Roger Lee Tremba of Parker R.D.,
2; six grandchildren; and a greatgrandchild.
She also is survived by
two brothers, Merle Edward Horn
of Georgia and Harold E. Horn of
Upland; and a number of nieces
and nephews.
Her husband, Tobias C. Tremba,
whom she married Sept. 12, 1932,
died April 25, 1997. A brother also
preceded her in death.

School in Franklin, Pa. She enjoyed
playing baseball and T-Ball,
and in little league. While attending
school she was involved in
cheerleading and playing basketball.

Georgianna Bechtel
Georgianna Bechtel, 70, of
Knox, died late Monday evening,
May 10, 2004, in Allegheny General
Hospital, Pittsburgh, of injuries
received in a fall at her home.
Born Oct. 18, 1933, in
Lowellville, Ohio, she was the
daughter of Myron D. and Abbie
Rebecca Madrid Flickinger.
Mrs. Bechtel had worked as an
attendant at Polk State Hospital.
She later had been employed
through the Green Thumb Program
at the Foxburg Free Library, retiring
in 1996.
She attended the Salem Lutheran
Church.
Mrs. Bechtel was a homemaker
and enjoyed cooking, knitting, crocheting,
bingo, cards, crossword
puzzles and Steelers football. Her
greatest joy was spending time with
her family and friends at family gettogethers.
She was married Nov. 2, 1968, to
Arthur Bechtel, who died June 28,
1989.
Surviving are two daughters and
their husbands, Becky and David
Rhoades of Emlenton and Cindy
and Kent Mays of Knox; one son
and his wife, David and Stacey
Bechtel of Emlenton; five grandchildren,
Christine Terwilliger, Jeff
Rhoades, Derrick Bechtel, Cassie
Mays and Amber Mays; and two
great-grandchildren, Madison

Julia E. 'Dolly' Phipps, 80, of
Old Rt. 8, Pearl, Pa, died May 10,
2004 at 2:59 A.M. at UPMC Oakland,
Pittsburgh Pa after a brief illness.
Born April 17, 1924 in Oil City,
Pa she is the daughter of Earl
Keverline and Amanda 'Minnie'
Cross Keverline.
She was married to Willard C.
Phipps in 1943 that survives. They
celebrated there 61 wedding anniversary
on April 25, 2004 of this
year.
Mrs. Phipps was the tax collector
for Irwin Township for many years.
She also was a devoted housewife
and mother.
She was a member of the
Pleasantview United Methodist
Church where she was the church
organist and a Sunday school
teacher there.
She enjoyed crocheting afghans,
blankets, and scrubbies.
Mrs. Phipps was a past president
of Clintonville Woman’s Club,
Secretary for many years of the
Venango County Federation of
Woman’s Club, was also on the
Irwin Township Democratic Committee,
in the Kitchen Cabinet Orchestra
of Clintonville and was a
active blood donor for the American
Red Cross, giving several gallons.

Eleanor L. 'Ellie' Phipps, 74 of
Park Avenue, Franklin, died at 2:42
p.m. Wednesday, May 19, 2004 at her
home following a brief illness.
Born April 1, 1930 in Scrubgrass
Township, Venango County, she was
the daughter of J. Redick and Maxine
Hulings Coulter.
She was a 1948 graduate of Emlenton
High School where she excelled
in music as a member of the chorus,
girls ensemble and girls trio. Her signature
song was 'Roses in Pickardy.'
She also lettered four years as a forward
on the girls basketball team and
was a member of the yearbook staff.
Mrs. Phipps retired in 1995 after 25
years of service at the J.C. Penney
store in the Cranberry Mall. She previously
worked as a lab technician at
Franklin Hospital and the Reno Card
Factory.
After her retirement she enjoyed
spending time with her family, especially
her grandchildren. She also enjoyed
crocheting, reading and crossword
puzzles.
Also surviving are a daughter and
husband, Linda and Michael Hinkson
of Cooperstown; three sons, W.
Michael Kelly and wife, Susan, J.

following a brief illness.
Mrs. Neely had been a resident
of Richland Township for 65
years. Born July 14, 1908, in Cranberry
Township, Venango County,
she was the daughter of Harry and
Dora Stroup Rhodes.
Mrs. Neely was a member of
Old Zion United Methodist
Church in Emlenton and the Missionary
Society of the church.
She also belonged to the
Richland Grange.
Mrs. Neely was a home-maker
and enjoyed flowers and gardening
She was married in Seneca; Dec.
27, 1930, to Lester Shane Neely,
who died June 16, 1997.

Born Aug. 27, 1965, in Oil City,
she was the daughter of Elmer S.
and Doris M. (Winters) Bechtel.
Mrs. Burgdorfer was of the Protestant
faith and her most important
vocation in life was being a homemaker
and taking care of her two
children.
She had been a member of the
Emlenton Jaycees.
She was a 1983 graduate of A-C
Valley High School, Foxburg.
She was married June 27, 1992,
in Seneca to Clyde J. Burgdorfer,
who survives.
Also surviving are two children,
Susan and Andrew Burgdorfer,
both at home; six sisters, Joyce
Lanpher and husband, Michael, of

Eugene E. Dotterer
Eugene E. Dotterer, 79 of Rocca
Way, Franklin, died unexpectedly Saturday,
May 15, 2004 at his residence.
Born Oct. 7, 1924, in Emlenton, he
was the son of Wilford and Bertha
White Dotterer.
He was a World War II veteran, serving
in the U.S. Army during the Battle
of the Bulge and the Normandy Invasion.
Mr. Dotterer was employed by
Koppers Chemical Co. in Rouseville
for 35 years until his retirement in October
1986.
He was a member of the Big Bend
Methodist Church in Emlenton. He
also was a member of the Veterans of
Foreign Wars Jesse Greer Post NO.
1835 of Franklin.
Mr. Dotterer enjoyed spending time
with his grandchildren and sharing his
stories with them. He also enjoyed
traveling, especially trucking with his
son-in-law.
He was married in Knox, February
15, 1948 to Hazel M. Burris, who survives.

husband, Karen and William Ritchey
Sr. of Franklin; a step daughter and
husband, Kate and Hugh Slaugenhaupt
Sr. of Knox; three grandchildren, William

Donald, and Leroy Dotterer; and one

Guy Hilton Burk
Guy Hilton Burk, 80, of Jackson
Twp., Evans City, Pa. passed away
Monday morning May 17, 2004 at
his residence following an illness.
Born at Red Bank, Pa. on July 3,
1923, he was the son of John David
and Minnie Pearl McKissick Burk.
He was employed by Armco for
thirty-nine years, where he worked
as a chemist in the metallurgical
department retiring in 1985.
Mr. Burk was United Methodist
by faith.
He served in World War II in the
U.S. Army from Jan. 25, 1943 to
February 21, 1946 from which he
was honorably discharged as a
Technical Sergeant. He was
awarded the American Theater
Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Theater
medal, Philippine Liberation
Medal, and the Victory Medal.
He was a life-member of VFW
Post #249 of Butler, and had been a
member of the post bowling team

bowler, hunter, and fisherman.

9, 1942; three daughters, Sally
Miller and husband Blaine of
Pensacola, FL., Dian Sasse and
husband Eddie of Pensacola, Fl.,
and Ruth Strobel and husband
Denny of Crestview, Fl.; two sons:
Jack W. Burk and wife Jeanette of
Karns City, Pa. and George T. Burk
and friend Judy Thiel of Evans
City, Pa.; one brother: William
'Bill' Burk of Butler; seventeen
grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren,
three great-great grandchildren;
also a number of nieces and
nephews.
In addition to his parents, a son
Guy H. 'Butch' Burk, Jr. and two
grandsons: Blaine Miller and Brian
Burk preceded him in death. Two
sisters: Jean Anderson and Sara
Kohlrneyer also preceded in death.

Home. Burial was in Eau

Minnie F. Bargerstock
Minnie F. Bargerstock, 88, of
Parker, Pa. passed away Sunday
morning May 16, 2004 at Clarview
Nursing and Rehabilitation Center,
Sligo, Pa. after an illness.
Born on Nov. 6, 1915 in Bruin,
Pa., she was the daughter of William
and Frances Champion Shay.
She was of the United Methodist
faith.
Mrs. Bargerstock was employed as
a press operator with Craftsman
Printing at Worthington, Pa. for over
seventeen years.
She was a member for over fifty
years of the Lady Rebakah Craig
Lodge at Craigsville, over forty-six
years as a member of the
Worthington Vol. Fire Dept. Ladies
Auxilialy, and over twenty-five years
as a member of the Beagle Club Auxiliary
at Craigsville (Worthington).
Surviving are one daughter: Mrs.
Thomas (Carol) Courson of Parker;
two sons, Edward Bargerstock, Jr. of
Worthington and Robert
Bargerstock of Lyndora; nine grandchildren:
Edward F. and John
Bargerstock, Thomas, Timothy,
Troy, Terry and Todd Courson,
Tammy Tasker, and Triscia Bartley;
eighteen great-grandchildren also a
number of nieces and nephews. In
addition to her parents, her husband
Edward Bargerstock passed away
March 27, 1973. The last surviving
member of her family, she was also
preceded in death by two sisters and
four brothers.
Friends called on Tuesday May 18,
2004 at the H. Jack Buzard Funeral
Home, Wayne St., Parker. Funeral
services will be held at 1:00 PM
Wednesday in the funeral home with
Rev. David Bowman, pastor of
Parker United methodist Church, officiating.
Burial was in Worthington
