Charles L. Anderson
1964 W&J grad was N.Y. chemist
Word has been received of the death of Charles Leonard Anderson, 54, of Hauppauge, N.Y., who died August 9, 1997.
He was born September 11, 1942, in Ridgeway, a son of Leonard Anderson of Ridgeway and the late Arnetta Anderson.
Mr. Anderson was a 22-year member of First Presbyterian Church of Smithtown, N.Y.
He graduated from Washington and Jefferson College in 1964, was trained as a chemist and was a member of numerous health physics societies. For the last 18 years, he was employed as Mid-Atlantic regional sales manager for Landauer Inc., specialists in radiation dosimetry.
On July 16, 1966, in Washington, he married Phyllis Morrison, who survives.
Surviving are a son, lst Lt. Brian Anderson of Okinawa; a daughter, Kristen Epp of Shoreham, N.Y.; two sisters, Kay Wisniewski of Gibsonia and Rita Petroff of Manchester, Conn.; and 10 nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted in Smithtown, N.Y. with the Rev. William H. Edwards of First Presbyterian Church officiating.

LaVerne I. Bartkewich, 78, of Finleyville, died Sunday, October 19, 1997, at home.
She was born March 21, 1919, in Finleyville, a daughter of Harry and Margaret Carney Castor.
Mrs. Bartkewich was Methodist.
Surviving are a son, Steve E. Bartkewich of Levittown; a brother, William Castor of Finleyville; six sisters, Sara Stark, Catherine Shultz and Evelyn Heiller, all of Finleyville, Gladys George of Muse, Bernice Darnley of Imperial and Donna Puglisi of Bethel Park; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Deceased are a brother, James Castor; and a sister, Irene Warren.

Lucille Kolenc Churilla, 85, formerly of Canonsburg, died Monday, October 20, 1997, in Wheeling Hospital, Wheeling, W.Va.
She was born March 24, 1912, in Smithton, a daughter of Martin and Mary Cumer Kolenc.
Mrs. Churilla was a homemaker and spent most of her life in Canonsburg, where she was a member of St. Patrick Parish.
Surviving are three sons, Martin Churilla of Duluth, Ga., Richard Churilla of Wheeling, W.Va. and Ronald Churilla of Washington; three sisters, Frances Leskovich of Cheswick, Pauline Yukevich of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, and Ann Chislow of Parma, Ohio; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Deceased are her husband, Andrew Churilla, who died July 26, 1995; and four brothers and three sisters.

Wilma June Deets, 71, of Dilliner, died Sunday, October 19, 1997, in Washington Hospital.
She was born June 29, 1925, in Dilliner, a daughter of William Henry and Harriet Louise White Jones.
Mrs. Deets was a member of John Corbly Memorial Baptist Church in Garards Fort.
Surviving are several cousins.
Deceased are her husbands, Walter Ringer, Edward Moody and William T. Deets; a sister, Virginia May Jones; and five brothers, Wilbert Louis, Robert Alan, Ralph Clayton, Charles William and Wilford Paul Jones.
She was the last of her immediate family.
Michael Huchko
Retired pipefitter from Bulger
Michael Huchko, 67, of Bulger died Sunday, October 19, 1997, at home.
He was born August 30, 1930, in Cedar Grove, a son of Mary Yopsic Huchko of Carnegie and the late Andrew Huchko.
Mr. Huchko was a pipefitter for Local 47 of the Plumbers and Steamfitters of Northwestern Pennsylvania in Monaca, retiring in 1996 after 29 years of service.
On August 4, 1951, he married Esther P. Conn Huchko, who survives.
Also surviving are three sons, Charles M. Huchko of Bulger, Terry M. Huchko of McDonald and Donald R. Huchko of Burgettstown; a daughter, Debra J. Chytil of Bulger; a brother, Peter Huchko of Wintersville, Ohio; two sisters, Victoria Smith and Sophie A. Schorr, both of Carnegie; seven grandchildren, Shad Chytil, Michael C., Holly M., Jennifer L., Cassandra M., Brian A. and Andrew S. Huchko; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Deceased is a brother, Joseph Hucko.
Edward H. Mullins
Former Midway resident was WWII Army veteran
Edward H. Mullins, 76, of Washington, formerly of Midway, died Sunday, October 19, 1997.
He was born January 15, 1921, in Logan, W.Va., a son of William and Melvie Mann Mullins.
Mr. Mullins served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Before retiring, he worked as a truck driver for Guyan Machine Co. in Logan.
On April 11, 1946, he married Agnes Dalton Mullins, who died July 4, 1986. On August 15, 1987, he married Clara Sims Staley Mullins, who survives.
Also surviving are a son, Gerald H. Mullins of Cecil; four daughters, Patricia A. Pester of Waynesburg, Mabel M. Romano of McKees Rocks, Ladena S. and Ragena K. Mullins, both formerly of Midway; six stepsons, Roy L. of Apollo, James of Chicago, Ill, David of Aliquippa, Bryan, John and William Staley, all of Washington; three stepdaughters, Dorothy Douglas of Kissimmee, Fla., Karen Briggs and Nancy Robl, both of Washington; a brother, William V. Mullins of Toledo, Ohio; a sister, Christine Hensley of Chicago, Ill.; seven grandchildren and 14 stepgrandchildren.
Deceased is a brother, Kenneth W. Mullins.

Georgia E. Maust Rinehart, 77, of 475 Fifth Avenue, Waynesburg, died at 10 a.m. Sunday, October 19, 1997, at her residence following a nine-month illness.
She was born on September 2, 1920, in Fayette County, a daughter of Benjamin Franklin Maust.
Mrs. Rinehart has spent most of her life in Greene County and was a homemaker.
Her husband, James B.F. Rinehart, died December 14, 1973.
Surviving are two sons, Ronald L. McCready of Waynesburg and Allen W. McCready of Bethel Park; a stepdaughter, Peggy Martin of Branalea, Ontario, Canada; a stepson, John William Rinehart of San Antonio, Texas; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; five sisters, Bessie Clutter of Chambersburg, Josephine Yash of McClellandtown, Brenda Shea of McClellandtown, Linda Lint of Malta, Ohio and Gladys Bander of Brooklyn, N.Y.; three brothers, Emerson Maust of Wilkinsburg, and Jack Maust and Morris Maust, both of Cleveland, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.
Deceased are a daughter, Judy Lien; her stepmother, Goldie Maust; a grandchild who died in infancy; three sisters, Mary Kaveney, Neil Dancer and Juanita Fidrus; and a brother, Lindsey Maust.

Julia Ladisic Weiner, 74, of Cokeburg, died Sunday, October 19, 1997, in Washington Hospital.
She was born July 13, 1923, in Edna, Westmoreland County, a daughter of Mike and Anna Zupancic Ladisic.
Mrs. Weiner had been employed by Sachs Quality Furniture in Bronx, N.Y.
She was a member of Croatian Fraternal Union Lodge 354 of Cokeburg and its bingo committee and was a supporter of St. George's Jr. Tamburitzans, Cokeburg.
Surviving are a daughter, Annette Cutaia of Cokeburg; two grandsons, Peter Phillip and Joseph Anthony Cutaia; two brothers, Peter and Joseph Ladisic, both of Cokeburg; three sisters, Viola Zegilla of Montville, N.J., Dolores Goblesky and Janice Ann Yoskey, both of Cokeburg.
Her husband, Reuben Weiner, died October 13, 1989.
Also deceased are a brother, Marion "Merk" Ladisic; two sisters, Rosella LaBrasca and Leona Puskarich; and a nephew and a niece.

Alvin C. Edwards, 83, of Bentleyville (Ginger Hill), formerly of Gastonville, died Tuesday, October 19, 1999, in Mon Valley Hospital, Carroll Township.
He was born September 2, 1916, in Gastonville, a son of George and Anna Black Edwards.
He was Methodist.
Mr. Edwards retired as a Boron service station manager.
Surviving are his wife, Ada "Mae" Castor Edwards, with whom he celebrated 58 years of marriage October 2, 1999; two sons, Ronald A. Edwards of Finleyville and Derrel Edwards of Charleroi; four grandchildren, Rhonda Mucci and Renee, Tara and Christopher Edwards; and two great-grandchildren.
Deceased are a sister, Marian Ostrander; and a brother, Kenneth Edwards.
Clarence Tennant

Clarence "Bud" Tennant, 77, of Carmichaels, formerly of Wellsburg, W.Va., and New Haven, W.Va., died at 9:15 a.m. Friday, September 24, 1999, in Rolling Meadows Nursing Home, Waynesburg.
He was born September 12, 1922, in Porters Falls, W.Va., a son of Clarence Raymond and Blanche Whiteman Tennant.
Since 1969, Mr. Tennant had been a resident of Carmichaels, where he was a member of Greene Valley Presbyterian Church.
He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II and was a member of American Legion Post 423 of Masontown.
Mr. Tennant was employed by Allegheny Power Co. for 43 years, working at Hatfield Power Station from 1969 until his retirement in 1985.
On March 31, 1951, he married Mary Lauri, who died August 13, 1992.
Surviving are two sons, Robert R. and Kenneth L. Tennant, both of Carmichaels; a daughter, Cindy Rinehart of Sterling, Va.; seven grandchildren, Brian D. Palmer, Kenneth L. Jr., Marcus R., Jason D. and Devin R. Tennant, Lauri R. and Jessica A. Rinehart; two brothers, Carl "Buck" Tennant of New Haven, W.Va., and Richard Tennant of Mt. Alto, W.Va.; three sisters, Jerry Hoit of Wellsburg, W.Va., and Betty Sayre and Rose Hoffman, both of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Roupe was a member of First Baptist Church of Canonsburg, a former member of First Baptist Church of Fairchance and a member of the Women's Christian Temperance Union.

Howard L. Biggard, 39, of Moninger Road, Washington, formerly of Finleyville and Garland, Texas, died Thursday, February 15, 2001, in UPMC-Montefiore hospital, Pittsburgh.
He was born August 24, 1961, in Monongahela, a son of Leslie and Wanda Sue Clawson Biggard of Finleyville.
Mr. Biggard was a 1979 graduate of Ringgold High School and was Protestant.
Surviving, in addition to his parents, are four sisters, Cheryl Mondragon of Dallas, Texas, Janice Keifer of Finleyville, Karen Bjelland of Des Moines, Wash., and Rebecca Krucik of Monongahela; and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Biggard was engaged to Cathleen Davis of Washington.
Mable Cole

Mable Cole, 93, of 154 West High Street, Waynesburg, formerly of West Lincoln Street, Waynesburg, died at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, February 15, 2001, in Respicenter High Street, Waynesburg.
She was born February 10, 1908, in Bluff, a daughter of Harvey Reason and Nancy Jane Shriver Cole.
Mrs. Cole was a member of the former Mt. Zion Methodist Church in Bluff, and recently had been affiliated with Washington Street United Methodist Church in Waynesburg.
She was a former member of Gasco Club and Greene County, Warrior Trail and a former member of Waynesburg Sportsman Club.
While her health permitted, Mrs. Cole quilted at Waynesburg Senior Citizens Center and she was a homemaker.
On August 24, 1923, she married Thomas L. Shader Cole, who died January 20, 1984.
Surviving are several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Cole was the last of her immediate family.
Deceased are three sisters, Betsy Lapping, Dorothy Williard and Florence C. Lewis.
Ethel Dodds

Ethel Dodds, 83, of Carmichaels, died Wednesday, February 14, 2001, in Rolling Meadows Nursing Home, Waynesburg, after a lengthy illness.
She was born August 29, 1917, in Cumberland Township, a daughter of Joe and Eliza Snyder Stickles.
Mrs. Dodd was a homemaker and lived most of her life in Cumberland Township.
She attended Fairdale Free Methodist Church in Carmichaels.
On October 12, 1936, she married Walter Dodds, who died September 11, 1995.
Mrs. Dodds was the last of her immediate family.
Surviving are three sons, George W. Dodds of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, Ernest W. Dodds of Brunswick, Ohio, and William R. Dodds of Twinsburg, Ohio; three daughters, Anna L. Murphy of Mather, Mary Abbott of Carmichaels and Betty Uveges of Waynesburg; 16 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
Deceased are three half brothers, Charles, Sylvia and Clyde Skiles; and a half sister, Emma Martin.
Isabel L. Dulaney

Isabel L. "Subbie" Dulaney, 64, of Washington, died at 9:45 a.m. Thursday, February 15, 2001, in the Washington Hospital emergency department after a lengthy illness.
She was born May 2, 1936, in Washington, a daughter of the late Dominick "Toots" and Theresa Tiano Marra.
Mrs. Dulaney worked at Brockway Glass Plant 7 until its closing.
On February 22, 1958, she married Robert S. Dulaney, who survives.
Also surviving are four sons, Robert D., Randy S., Rodney C. and Richard F. Dulaney, all of Washington; three sisters, Mary Lytle of Washington, Connie Villani of Bridgeville and Norma Jean Bedley of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; and four grandchildren, Chelsey, Taylor, Robbie and Alisha Dulaney.
Deceased is a brother, John L. Marra.

Coal miner for more than 37 years
Frank Williard Harshey, 91, Atlasburg, died Wednesday, February 14, 2001, in Trinity Medical Center West, Steubenville, Ohio.
He was born December 22, 1901, in New Philadelphia, Ohio, a son of Albert "Ollie" and Minnie Bell Cook Harshey.
Mr. Harshey worked as a coal miner in various mines in the Burgettstown area for more than 37 years and then retired from Smith Township Garage in Cherry Valley.
Surviving are three sons, Paul Harshall of Washington, Larry Harshey of Atlasburg and William Harshey of Midvale, Ohio; four daughters, Viola Yates of Landrum, S.C., Dorothy Still of Smithfield, Ohio, Mary McKinney of Atlasburg and Sherry Harshey of Steubenville; 34 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
Deceased are his wife, Lillian Ward Harshey, who died November 1976; a son, Frank James Harshey, who died March 1998; and several brothers and sisters.

She was born May 30, 1921, in Edenborn, a daughter of John and Suzanne Volk.
Mrs. Oblak was a former resident of Carmichaels.
She was a member of St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Naperville.
Surviving are three sons, Paul Oblak of Tempe, Ariz., Ronald Oblak of Aliquippa and James Oblak of Bakersfield, Calif.; three daughters, Suzanne Zalar of Naperville, Mary Ann Toyloy of Phoenix, Ariz., and Antoinette Campbell of Bothell, Wash.; and 11 grandchildren.

Donald Shultz, 67, of 500 Bridge Street, Waynesburg, died Thursday, February 15, 2001, in Greene County Memorial Hospital, after a long illness.
He was born October 18, 1933, in Waynesburg, a son of Charles Okel and Lucille Smith Shultz.
Mr. Shultz was a 1951 graduate of Waynesburg High School.
He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War.
Mr. Shultz worked as a dispatcher for the Jefferson Division of Allegheny Power for 36 years, retiring in 1995.
He was an active member of Cornerstone Covenant Church, Waynesburg, and participated in the prison ministry.
On January 1, 1955, he married Judith Kridle, who survives.
Also surviving are a son, Vincent Shultz of Waynesburg; two daughters, Audrey Dorman of Forest, Va., and Cathy Kirby of Waynesburg; seven grandchildren, Rachel, Valerie and Caroline Shultz, Evan, Zoey and Tate Dorman and Dylan Kirby; a great-granddaughter; and two sisters, Donnis Shultz of Waynesburg and Helen Rae Singleton of the state of Indiana.
Deceased is a sister, Carol Ann Shultz.

She was a member of Order of Eastern Star.
Mrs. Simmons, along with her late husband, had operated Simmons Farm and Market in McMurray.
Surviving are a son, Earl Simmons Jr. of McMurray; a daughter, Delores Loughman of Ohio; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Janet Eileen Struwing, 56, formerly of Martha Lloyd School, Troy, died Thursday, February 15, 2001, in Chemung County Nursing Facility in Elmira, N.Y.
She was born in Pittsburgh, a daughter of Geneva Struwing of Elmira, and the late Roy Struwing.
Miss Struwing had moved to Elmira in 1953 with her parents.
She received her education at First Chemung County ARC Class, Elmira City School District and Martha Lloyd Community Services in Troy.
Surviving, in addition to her mother, is an aunt, Frances B. Rohm of Pittsburgh.

She was born January 4, 1910, in California, a daughter of J. Frank and Jane Gault Long.
Mrs. Sumner was a member of Mingo Creek Presbyterian Church, where she was an organist for many years, and had attended Sunday school and Bible school.
She was an Avon saleswoman for 51 years.
Mrs. Sumner was a founding member of New Eagle Beagle Club, a member of AARP in New Eagle and Forever Young Club in Finleyville.
Surviving are a sister, Marjorie Johnston of Belle Vernon; and several nieces and nephews.
Deceased are her husband, John L. Sumner; two brothers, Kenneth Long and J. Frank Long Jr.; and a sister, Martha Kinder Hixon.
Judith Vandrak

Judith A. Vandrak, 55, of North Royalton, Ohio, died Saturday, February 10, 2001, in her home.
She was born April 6, 1945, in Washington County, a daughter of Kathleen Ranegar of Parma Heights, Ohio, formerly of Hickory, and the late Emil Ranegar Jr.
Mrs. Vandrak was a graduate of Immaculate Conception Catholic High School in Washington.
She was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Ohio.
On September 20, 1975, she married Edward Vandrak, who survives.
Also surviving are two daughters, Monica Soucie of Broadview Heights, Ohio, and Tina Kennedy of Brecksville, Ohio; and three granddaughters, Kayla, Marissa and Olivia.
Services were held at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Parma, Ohio. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Marie Veydt Calvey, 86, of Bridgeville, formerly of Cecil, died Friday, February 16, 2001, in I.H.S. Greenery, Canonsburg.
She was born November 30, 1914, in Cecil, a daughter of Louis and Marie Peron Veydt Sr.
Mrs. Calvey was employed in the dietary department at Western Center in Canonsburg until her retirement in 1979.
She was a member of Venice Presbyterian Church.
Prior to illness, Mrs. Calvey was active with the senior citizens groups in Bridgeville and South Fayette Township, and enjoyed traveling.
Surviving are two grandsons, David and Daniel Calvey; and a brother, Alex Veydt of Cecil.
Her caregiver was Dorothy Veydt of Bridgeville.
Deceased are a son, John "Butch" Calvey; an infant daughter; three sisters, Harriet Strimel, Victoria Aubrey and Elaine Zakareckis; and four brothers, Paul, Frank, Louis and John.

Thomas M. Campbell, 47, of Edgewood Drive, Bealeton, Va., formerly of Washington, died Wednesday, February 14, 2001, in University of Virginia Medical Center, Charlottesville, Va., after a three-week illness.
He was born July 5, 1953, in Washington, a son of the late Robert H. and Mona Faye Moore Campbell.
Mr. Campbell was employed as a construction supervisor at Wireless Enterprises Ltd. in Columbia, Md.
On April 25, 1987, he married Joyce E. Beglin, who survives.

Lydia Tustin Hamilton

Lydia Tustin Hamilton, 74, of Waynesburg R.D.5 (Hargus Creek), died unexpectedly at 9:30 p.m. Thursday, February 15, 2001, in the home of her son, Richard E. "Ick" Hamilton, after being in failing health for the past several years.
She was born August 2, 1926, in Richhill Township, Greene County, a daughter of Joseph Cephus and Fannie Barney Tustin. She was raised by her foster parents, Earl and Marie Grove Tustin, from the age of 3.
Mrs. Hamilton resided in Jackson Township for several years prior to moving to Center Township in 1950.
She was a 1943 graduate of Center Township School and a member of Rogersville Christian Church.
Mrs. Hamilton was an employee of the former Greenway Shirt Factory in Waynesburg. Prior to her retirement in 1986, she was employed by West Greene School District in the high school cafeteria for more than 10 years
She was a member of West Greene Senior Citizens, Cornerstone Genealogical Society, AFSCME Retired Public Employees of Pennsylvania Chapter 13 and a volunteer with the American Cancer Society for several years.
On October 20, 1944, she married Richard Eugene Hamilton, who died May 8, 2000.
In additon to her son, surviving are a brother, Frank Tustin of Rutan; a sister, Mildred Vensic; three grandchildren, Robin Ketchem, Shelly Amos and Vicki Wilson; five great-grandchildren; and two stepgrandchildren, Eric and Natalie Ketchem.
Deceased are two great-grandchildren, Wesley Ryan and Abigail Rachelle Amos; a brother, Leo T. Tustin, who was killed in action during World War II; a sister, June Kidwell; a half sister, Lena Knisley; and three half brothers, Raymond "Tuck" and Russell Tustin and Alfred Martin.

He was born June 6, 1946, in Belle Bontaine, Ohio, a son of the late Edwin and Gladys Huffman Hutchins.
Mr. Hutchins was a truck driver with Daily's Express and was a member of Greater Pittsburgh Gun Club.
Surviving are his wife, Kathleen Abbott Hutchins; three daughters, Florence Hutchins of Nebraska, and Bertha Hutchins and Carol Hutchins, both of Bulger; a granddaughter, Kathleen Hutchins; and two brothers, Robert and Ronald Hutchins of Ohio.
James G. Jansante Sr.
Fisher Body retiree from Richeyville
James Germanio Jansante Sr., 72, of Richeyville, died at 10:15 a.m. Friday, February 16, 2001, in his home, following a lengthy illness.
He was born February 26, 1928, in Bentleyville, a son of Germanio and Pauline Dicenzo Jansante.
Mr. Jansante was a member of St. Agnes Roman Catholic Church in Richeyville.
He was a graduate of Bentleyville High School and attended Duquesne University, where he played football.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Force in World War II, and played semi-pro football for the Monessen Ravens.
Mr. Jansante retired from General Motors' Fisher Body plant in West Mifflin after 33 years of service. He also operated a service station and car wash in Richeyville for many years.
On January 28, 1951, he married Georgette Papadopolis of Monessen, who survives. They celebrated their golden anniversary this year.
Also surviving are two daughters, Jamie Dee Butkus of South Fayette Township and Janet Lee Wolff of Peters Township; a son, James John Jansante Jr. of Richeyville; four grandchildren, Brian Butkus, Kara and Alyse Kisty and Kristen Jansante; a brother, Valerio Jansante of Bentleyville; a sister, Virginia Scorza of Charleroi; and several nieces and nephews.
Deceased are four sisters, Evelyn Gordon, Eva Gust, Cecelia Morris and Lillian Babirad; and a grandson, James John Jansante III, who died April 3, 1998.
Ressie Lee Estep
Member of Hart Avenue Church of the Nazarene
Ressie Lee Estep, 99, of Washington, formerly of Fayette Street, died at 12:05 a.m. Wednesday, April 18, 2001, in Washington Hospital. He had been ill since October.
He was born November 6, 1901, in Charleston, W.Va., a son of George and Arabelle King Estep.
Mr. Estep retired in 1965 from the maintenance department of Hazel Atlas Glass Plant No. 1. He previously had worked for Tygart Valley Glass and a variety of other companies.
He was a charter member of Hart Avenue Church of the Nazarene, where he was a member for more than 50 years, and was awarded the Distinguished Service Award in 1990. He served as Sunday school superintendent and teacher.
Mr. Estep enjoyed vegetable gardening and yard work.
On September 12, 1927, he married Lurilda Stansberry, who died September 7, 1988.
Surviving are two daughters, Maxine L. Miller of Washington and Phyllis J. Haines of San Antonio, Texas; two sons, Gerald L. Estep of Daytona Beach, Fla., and Jack I. Estep of Margate, Fla.; two brothers, Carlos Estep of Grafton, W.Va., and Emmett Estep of Washington; 13 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Deceased are a granddaughter, Allison; and a sister who died in her youth.
Bertha Horr Hartzell
Member of Windy Gap Presbyterian Church
Bertha Horr Hartzell, 96, of Claysville, formerly of Washington, West Alexander and West Finley, died Tuesday, April 17, 2001, in Washington Hospital following a brief illness.
She was born August 9, 1904, in West Finley, a daughter of Lewis and Cora Ritchey Horr.
Mrs. Hartzell was a member of Windy Gap Presbyterian Church, West Finley, where she taught Sunday school and was a member of the Missionary Society. She was a former member of West Alexander Presbyterian Church, where she served as deacon.
Mrs. Hartzell was a homemaker who enjoyed quilting, square dancing and playing cards and dominos.
She belonged to the Golden Agers in West Alexander and served on West Finley Township Board of Elections for many years.
On July 3, 1923, in Wheeling, W.Va., she married Robert S. Hartzell, who died November 13, 1984.
Surviving are three sons, Charles H. Hartzell of New Cumberland, W.Va., R. Raynor Hartzell of Carrollton, Ohio, and Lyle R. Hartzell of West Alexander; three daughters, Helen Gray of Claysville, Leanna Strawn of Meadville and Regina Kimmel of Canton, Ohio; four sisters, Bessie Lucille Francis of Lorain, Ohio, Margaret Louise Carroll of Dallas, W.Va., Betty Jane Fischer of Medina, Ohio, and Martha Lulu Mangus of Winter Haven, Fla.; 17 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.
Deceased are a son, Clarence A. Hartzell; five brothers, John, Homer, Glen, Harry and George Horr; five sisters, Callie Horr, Nellie Wahr, Maude Kearney, Edith Ewing and Ruth Schzure; a grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
William T. Helphenstine
Longtime resident of Waynesburg was WWII vet
William T. Helphenstine, 85, of 6951Ž2 East College Street, Waynesburg, died at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 18, 2001, in Beverly Health Care, Waynesburg.
He was born January 2, 1916, in Waynesburg, a son of Alex and Gail Church Helphenstine.
Mr. Helphenstine lived most of his life in Waynesburg, where he was a member of Washington Street United Methodist Church and John Wesley Sunday School Class of the church.
He was a member of Oceanview Masonic Lodge 0335 F&AM in Virginia and a former member of Waynesburg Elks Lodge 757, where he was past exulted ruler and held several other positions. He also was a past southwest district president of the Elks Lodge.
For 63 years he was a member of Waynesburg Odd Fellows Lodge 469, where he was past noble grand. He was a member of Waynesburg Volunteer Fire Company and Warrior Trail Association.
Mr. Helphenstine served as a Merchant Marine with the Coast Guard during World War II.
In 1935, he started with his father in the plumbing and heating profession and later worked for himself in the same profession, retiring in 1993.
On April 14, 1939, he married Pearl Love, who survives.
Also surviving are two daughters, Linda L. Helphenstine of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Cynthia H. Adams of Media; a grandson, Dr. Jeffrey C. Chamberland; a great-granddaughter; a brother, Robert A. Helphenstine of Morgan Mill, Texas; and several nieces and nephews.
Deceased are two brothers, Harold Helphenstine, who died in infancy, and Roy Helphenstine.
Josephine D. Horosky
Member of St. John the Baptist Orthodox Church
Josephine D. Horosky, 84, of Canonsburg, died at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 18, 2001, in her home.
She was born May 29, 1916, in Ambridge, a daughter of Frank and Frances Zima.
Mrs. Horosky was a member of St. John the Baptist Orthodox Church in Canonsburg and its Ladies Altar Society.
She attended Canonsburg schools and was a homemaker who loved to grow flowers.
On June 16, 1938, she married John Horosky, who died April 18, 1997.
Surviving are two sons, the Very Rev. Fr. John C. Horosky of Monessen and Harry J. Horosky of Canonsburg; three daughters, Janet C. and Susan J. Horosky, both of Canonsburg, and Anna M. Cook of Palo Alto; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two nieces; and two nephews.
Mrs. Horosky was the last of her immediate family.
Deceased are a brother, Frank Zima, who died in World War II; and a sister, Sally Wozny.
Charles G. Meddings
70-year member of Houston fire department
Charles G. "Lightning" Meddings, 88, of Houston, died Tuesday, April 17, 2001, in Washington Hospital.
He was born July 5, 1912, in Mt. Lebanon, a son of Frank and Bertha Colteryahn Meddings.
Mr. Meddings was a member of First United Presbyterian Church of Houston and served on Chartiers-Houston School Board at the time of the jointure.
He was a 70-year member of Houston Volunteer Fire Department, where he served as chief and was made honorary fire chief after 50 years of service.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and took part in the invasion of Normandy. He was a member of American Legion Post 902 of Houston.
Mr. Meddings was employed by I.C. Patsch & Sons and Arnold Pontiac, both of Houston. He owned and operated Meddings Mobil Service in Houston.
On June 12, 1937, he married Marguerite Montgomery, who died May 4, 1998.
Surviving are a son, Charles R. Meddings of Houston; a daughter, Jill Harshman of Houston; four grandsons, Robb M., Kevin J. and Adam C. Meddings, and Chad M. Roberts; a stepgrandson, Richard M. Harshman; two brothers, Frank Meddings of Canonsburg and Ray Meddings of Garden Grove, Calif.; and a sister, Bette Bauer of Canonsburg.
Deceased are a brother, Roy Meddings; and three sisters, Wilma Patsch, Frances Reinheimer and Bertha Stark.
