Papay, Michael Papay, Kimberly Papay and Kellie Vargo; and eight grandchildren, Richard, Benton, Kathryn, Christopher and Michael Carpellotti, Kristen Faraldo, Jamie Papay and Michael Jonathan Vargo III.
Deceased is a wife, Mary Jane "Rusty" Russell.

Mary A. Vega, 87, of Langeloth, died Saturday, August 1, 1998, in her home.
She was born January 23, 1911, in Spelter, W.Va., a daughter of Ray and Josephine Rodriquez Vega.
Until her retirement, Ms. Vega was a sales clerk in men's furnishings for Kaufmann's Department Store, Pittsburgh.
She was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church of Burgettstown.
Surviving are several nieces and nephews.
Deceased are three brothers, Henry, Joe and Kenneth Vega; and two sisters, Mary Alvarez and Lucy Garcia.
Nola H. Young

Nola H. Young, 89, of Hillsview Nursing Home, died Saturday, August 1, 1998, in Washington Hospital, following a brief illness.
She was born January 6, 1909, in West Virginia, a daughter of E. Lee and Delia Dodd Hart.
Mrs. Young was a farmer's wife and member of Bethel Presbyterian Church in Prosperity, where she was a member of its quilters club.
She also was a pianist.
On May 26, 1931, she married John D. Young, who died September 27, 1995.
Surviving are a sister, Lucille Webster of Graysville; and several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.
Deceased are two brothers, Herman and Kenneth "Red" Hart; and a sister, Bernida Hart.
Paul W. Bishop Sr.
U. S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II
Paul W. Bishop Sr., 81, of 2796 Ivanhoe Road, South Pymatuning Township, died at 12:04 p.m. Thursday, August 27, 1998, in Sharon Regional Health System following an extended illness.
He was born June 7, 1917, in Sharon, a son of Harry and Pansy Hurd Bishop.
Mr. Bishop was a 1935 graduate of Brookfield High School.
An Army Air Corps veteran, he served during World War II in Europe.
Mr. Bishop was a building superintendent for the former Sharon Store and later the former Strouss Hirschberg, Youngstown, from which he retired in the 1970s after more than 40 years of service.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Sharon, and formerly was a member of Free and Accepted Masons Lodge 517, Sharpsville.
On March 17, 1946, he married Dorothy L. Adams, who survives.
Also surviving are two daughters, Jeanne A. Koch of Sharon and Marylou Polasky of Washington; a son, Paul W. Bishop Jr. of Sharpsville; a sister, Edna Recktenwald of Greenville; and five grandchildren.
Deceased are three brothers, Russell, Howard and Harold Bishop; and three sisters, Hilda Davis, Lois George and an infant sister, Phyllis Jean.

Former West Alex man served in U.S. Coast Guard
Fred A. Clark, 61, of 14288 High Street, Petersburg, Ohio, died at 3:30 p.m. Friday, August 28, 1998, at his home.
He was born January 17, 1937, in West Alexander, a son of Cecil W. and Mary Masier Clark of Washington.
Mr. Clark was retired after 28 years of service at LTV Steel Co. He was a crane operator in the seamless department and was a security guard for Shane Security Agency at the time of his death.
He served in the U.S. Coast Guard and had been a resident of Ohio for 42 years.
Mr. Clark was a 1955 graduate of McGuffey High School.
On September 23, 1956, he married Nora J. Wood, who survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Mark A. Clark of Columbiana, Ohio, and Gregory Clark of Massillon, Ohio; a brother, David Clark of Salem, Ohio; a sister, Janette Wysell of North Lima, Ohio; and two grandchildren.
Elsie Argenta Danek
Owner of the former Danek Grocery Store
Elsie Argenta Danek, 96, of Joffre, died Friday, August 28, 1998, in Washington County Health Center, Washington.
She was born August 27, 1902, in Sygan, a daughter of Angelo and Louisa Barp Argenta.
Mrs. Danek operated Danek Grocery Store for more than 55 years until it closed in 1993.
She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church of Burgettstown and the Raccoon Society of Joffre.
Surviving are a daughter, Andrea D. Wisenauer of Sterling, Va.; a son, George Danek of Pleson, Calif.; a granddaughter, Ensign Kelli Danek; a grandson, Brett Danek; and a sister, Fife Zelenko of Slovan.
Deceased are her husband, Joseph Danek, who died March 3, 1954; a sister; and a brother.

David O. Johnson
Former school director retired from Coen Oil Co.
David O. Johnson, 75, of Buffalo Township, died at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, August 30, 1998, in Washington Hospital. He had been in failing health for the past two years.
He was born March 25, 1923, in Bristoria, Greene County, a son of D.H. "Johnny" Johnson and Minnie Parson Johnson Masters.
Mr. Johnson had been a resident of Buffalo Township for the past 50 years and was a member and former elder of Claysville United Presbyterian Church.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving as a technician fifth grade in the U.S. Army with the 479th Ordnance Evacuation Company. He served for 27 months in the European Theater.
Mr. Johnson was employed as a special representative with Coen Oil Co. of Washington for 29 years prior to his retirement on March 31, 1985. After retiring and until his health began to fail, he and his wife established and operated National Pike Enterprises.
He served on McGuffey School Board for 17 years and served as president of the board of Western Area Vocational-Technical School. He also was a former member of the Buffalo Township Zoning Hearing Board.
Mr. Johnson was a member of James R. Hunt American Legion Post 639 of Claysville and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8319 of Washington.
On August 25, 1946, he married Sara Lee Fordyce, who survives.
Also surviving are two sons, David L. Johnson of Canonsburg and Richard D. Johnson of Raleigh, N.C.; a daughter, Nancy Lee Racunas of Washington; and six grandchildren, Jennifer Asti and Christen, Stacie, Adam, Lauren and Seth Johnson.
Deceased are a brother, Robert L. Johnson; a sister, Helen L. Phillips; and his stepfather, Samuel B. Masters.

Charles C. Shipley
Retired Pennsylvania Railroad engineer
Charles C. Shipley, 80, of Adlin Avenue, Houston, died Saturday, August 29, 1998, in the Allegheny University Hospital-Canonsburg.
He was born November 28, 1917, in Carnegie, a son of Charles and Margaret Cummins Shipley.
For 28 years, Mr. Shipley worked as an engineer for the Pennsylvania Railroad, retiring in 1980. He then owned and operated Tropic Breeze Apartments in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, Fla., for 15 years, before moving back to Pennsylvania.
On September 16, 1963, he married Helen Kuznicki, who survives.
Also surviving are a grandson, Scott Shepard; and a great-granddaughter, Gretchen Shepard.
A brother, Glenn Shipley, is deceased.
George E. Smith
WWII vet was retired railroad engineer
George E. "Bus" Smith, 85, of Finleyville, died Sunday, August 30, 1998, in his home.
He was born September 1, 1912, in Jefferson Plan, a son of George W. and Mary Maple Smith.
He was a retired engineer for Pennsylvania Railroad, Shire Oaks, and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.
Surviving are a son, Ronald Smith of Fenelton; a daughter, Donna Jean Laughner of Arizona; his stepmother, Elizabeth A. Keenist Smith of Wilson; five sisters, Blanche I. Kibe of West Newton, Margaret E. Hall of Elizabeth, Shirley M. Bour of Forward Township, Lillie J. Jobb of Virginia Beach, Va., and Karen M. Vucenovich of Clairton; a brother, David A. Smith of Verona; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Deceased is his wife, Clara Marie Miller Smith, who died August 3, 1995.
Allen S. Spitak

Allen S. "Albie" Spitak, 63, of Daisytown, formerly of Cleveland, Ohio, died unexpectedly Saturday, August 29, 1998, in Brownsville General Hospital.
He was a son of Anna Kushner Spitak of Centerville and the late Paul Spitak Sr.
Mr. Spitak was retired from H.J. Sherwood Refractories Co. of Cleveland, where he was employed for 36 years.
He was a 1954 graduate of California Community High School and a member of Centerville American Legion Post 705, California Young Men's Club, Daisytown A.C., Hungarian Club of Daisytown and the California Boat Club.
Mr. Spitak was a former president of the U.S. Polka Association and was founder and first president of the Cleveland Polka Association.
Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his wife, Judith A. Konick Spitak; a son, Steven Spitak of California; a granddaughter, Kaylee Elizabeth Spitak; a brother, Paul Spitak Jr. of Warren, Ohio; a sister, Dolores Bogus of Centerville; and several nieces and nephews.
Janet Kelley Williams
Former Tennessee deputy sheriff
Janet Kelley Williams, 33, of West Newton, formerly of Monongahela, died Wednesday, August 26, 1998, in Mercy Hospital, Pittsburgh.
She was born May 3, 1965, in Monongahela, a daughter of Geraldine S. Kelley Sickman of Monongahela and the late Albert S. Sickman.
Mrs. Williams was a member of Grace Lutheran Evangelical Church in Monongahela.
She was formerly employed as a deputy sheriff in Tennessee.
Surviving are her husband, James "Winky" Williams; two stepdaughters, Dawn and Cassie Williams, both of West Newton; a brother, George Daniel Sickman, formerly of Monongahela; and a stepgrandchild, Brandon Williams.
Deceased, in addition to her father, are her maternal grandparents, Earl L. and Shirley Dunlap Kelley.
Private services were held, and arrangements were handled by L.M. Frye Funeral Home Inc., Monongahela.
Mary Chalfa Yatchum
Charter member of St. Benedict the Abbot Church
Mary Chalfa Yatchum, 74, of 307 E. McMurray Road, McMurray, died at 11 a.m. Saturday, August 29, 1998, in her home.
She was born February 18, 1924, in Canonsburg, a daughter of John and Susan Martin Chalfa.
Mrs. Yatchum had lived since 1957 in McMurray, where she had been a charter member of St. Benedict the Abbot Church and was a 50-year member of Slovak Jednota.
During World War II, she worked at Neville Island and for many years had been employed at the former R. L. Schriver Music Store in Canonsburg.
On March 3, 1951, she married Joseph W. Yatchum, who survives.
Also surviving are two daughters, Mary Jo Lenarz of Finleyville and Michelle Bruce of Houston, Texas; three grandchildren, Julia, Jeremy and Amanda Lenarz; and several nieces and nephews.
She was the last of her immediate family.
Deceased are three brothers, Mike, John and Joe Chalfa; and two sisters, Helen Radinsky and Ann Regrut.
Anna Zdravecky

Anna Zdravecky, 83, formerly of Nemacolin, died Sunday, August 30, 1998, in Rolling Meadows Care Center, Waynesburg.
She was born May 13, 1915, in Edenborn, a daughter of Michael and Mary M. Matey Simkovic.
Mrs. Zdravecky was a member of Our Lady of Consolation Roman Catholic Church of Nemacolin, where she was a member of the Altar-Rosary Society and Catholic Daughters of America.
She also was a member of Carmichaels Senior Citizens and St. Hugh Senior Activity Group.
Surviving are two stepdaughters, Dorothy Antonio of Lodi, Ohio, and Betty Phillips of Dunkirk, Ind.; a stepson, Ray Zdravecky of Brook Park, Ohio; a brother, Andrew Simkovic of Carmichaels; two sisters, Velma Kesock of Uniontown and Josephine Kozlowski of Nemacolin; and several grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Deceased are her husband, John Zdravecky; a daughter, Mary Agnes Demchak; two brothers, Joseph J. and Michael Simkovic; and an infant sister, Mary Simkovic.
Albert "Jeff" Dye
Self-employed farmer and veteran of World War II
Albert "Jeff" Dye, 88, of New Freeport R.D.1, died at 3:20 a.m. Monday, August 3, 1998, in Franklin Care Center, Waynesburg.
He was born September 19, 1909, in Waynesburg, a son of Andrew Jefferson and Ida Harrington Dye.
Mr. Dye resided in New Freeport most of his life and was a Protestant.
He was a 1927 graduate of Toccoa High School in Taccoa, Ga., where he starred in football.
Mr. Dye was a self-employed farmer in Springhill Township as long as his health permitted and was a former substitute mail carrier in the New Freeport area for several years. He was last employed as a foreman with PennDot for several years prior to his retirement.
Mr. Dye was a veteran of World War II, having served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Corps with the 318th Flight Control Squadron.
He was a former member of James Farrell American Legion Post 330, VFW Post 4793, Loyal Order of Moose and the Eagles, all in Waynesburg.
Mr. Dye shared his home with Vergie Glover Dye for the past 30 years.
Surviving are one son, Albert Jack Dye Sr. of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; one grandson, Albert Jack Dye Jr.; one great grandson, Andrew Justin Dye; one stepdaughter, Nancy Frost of Holbrook Star Route; and four step grandchildren.
Deceased are a grandson, Donald Jeffery Dye; one granddaughter, Denise Ann Dye; and four sisters, Lillian Davis, Grace Boyer, Ruth Finch and Sylvia Peterson.
Mr. Dye was the last of his immediate family.
Richard S. Fowler
Sporting goods sales representative
Richard Stephen Fowler, 57, of Eighty Four, died at 8 p.m. Monday, August 3, 1998, in his home, following a brief illness.
He was born June 24, 1941, in Washington, a son of Thomas Stephen Fowler and Della Mae McNurlen Fowler Redfurn.
Mr. Fowler was a graduate of Fairmont High School in Dayton, Ohio, and served in the U.S. Army from 1966-1972 and in Korea from 1967-68.
He was a horseman and an accomplished trapshooter. He was a member of Johnstown Saddle Club, Mountain Valley Trailriders and the National Rifle Association.
During the past 28 years, he was a sales representative for Outdoor Sports Headquarters in the tri-state area.
On January 17, 1976, in Washington, he married Helen JoAnn Sims, who survives.
Also surviving is a half-brother, Tim Fowler of Woodhaven, Mich.
Frances Hamlin
Retired teacher from Pineville High School
Frances Hamlin, 83, of Pineville, W.Va., died Sunday, August 2, 1998, in a Beckley, W.Va., hospital following a short illness.
She was born January 31, 1915, in Hinton, W.Va., a daughter of Everett and Bertha Howard Allen.
Mrs. Hamlin was a retired school teacher from Pineville High School, where she was a sponsor for the Tri-Hi-Y Club. She was a graduate of Marshall University, a member of the Pineville Homemakers and past member of the Eastern Star.
Mrs. Hamlin was a charter member and elder of the Pineville Presbyterian Church and was a 50-year resident of Pineville.
Surviving are two sons, Douglas Ray Hamlin of Washington and Kenley Hamlin of Pineville; five grandchildren, Kenley Hamlin II, Lloyd Hamlin, Mary Beth Hamlin, Shawn Hamlin and Brian Hamlin; and one great-granddaughter.
Deceased are her husband, Doug Hamlin, who died April 6, 1998; an infant son; an infant granddaughter; a sister, Lena Allen; and a brother, Ernest Allen.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 4, at the Pineville Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Barbara Ann Hedin officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.
Margaret V. McCabe

Margaret Virginia Welch McCabe, 83, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died Sunday, August 2, 1998, in her home.
She was born May 4, 1915, on afarm in Western Pennsylvania, a daughter of Isaac Newton and Clara Dell Welch.
Mrs. Welch was a registered nurse, practicing in hospitals, private duty home care and in industry during World War II.
She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Cedar Rapids, where she served as a deacon, elder and as president of the United Presbyterian Women. She was active in PEO Chapter JT, Ladies Literary Club, Modern Reading, Wednesday Book Club, Martha Marquis and Froth.
On April 1, 1944, in Gulfport, Miss., she married Dr. Joseph McCabe, who survives and with whom she celebrated 54 years of marriage. In 1958, they moved with their family to Cedar Rapids, when her husband became president of Coe College.
Also surviving are a son, Dr. J. Brandt McCabe of Princeton, N.J.; a daughter, Alice McCabe Nowling of Cedar Rapids; and two grandchildren, Jonathan McCabe and Amanda Kim Conrad.

John Irvan Tedrow, 66, of Beloit, Ohio, died July 27, 1998, in Alliance Community Hospital, Alliance, Ohio.
He was born March 26, 1932, in Aleppo, a son of Clyde and Myrtle Gorby Tedrow.
Mr. Tedrow was a member of the Brethren Church.
He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the U.S. Army. She retired from Royal China Co. in Sebring, Ohio.
Surviving are his wife, Ellen Sine Tedrow, whom he married December 29, 1956; three daughters, Debbie DeGroff and Kimberly Durenda, both of Alliance, and Mary Harrison of Beloit; two sons, John "Sam" Tedrow of Bellville, Mich., and Robert Tedrow of Damascus, Ohio; three sisters, Mary Martin, Ruth and Alice Varner, all of Wind Ridge; two brothers, Niles Tedrow of Wind Ridge and Harold Tedrow of Salineville, Ohio; seven grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.
Deceased is a brother, Lloyd Tedrow.
Services were held in Hundred, W.Va., and interment was in St. Cloud, W.Va.
Margaret E. Williams
Pittsburgh native active in Strasburg civic causes
Margaret E. (Peg) Williams, 87, a long-time resident of Strasburg, died at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, August 2, 1998, in Arbor View Rehabilitation Center at Willow Valley, Lancaster.
She was born in Pittsburgh, a daughter of Clyde E. and Elsie Braden Young.
Mrs. Williams was a graduate of Perry High School, Pittsburgh. She attended Westminster College, where she was a member of Chi Omega Sorority. She graduated from the University of Pittsburgh, majoring in chemistry.
Following her graduation and prior to her marriage in 1934, she was employed as a chemist by H.J. Heinz Co., Pittsburgh.
She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Strasburg, served on the board of directors of the Easter Seals Society of Lancaster County for several years and was one of the founders of the Strasburg Reading Center, which now is Strasburg-Heisler Library.
Mrs. Williams was a charter member of Strasburg Heritage Society, and for many years was chairman of the stands commitee of its annual antique and craft sale. She also was a member of the Buchanan Foundation, Rockford Foundation and DeMuth Foundation. In December 1997, she was honored by the Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County, with the C. Emlen Urban Award for leadership in historic preservation. She took an active role in the preservation of the historic Octorara Covenanter United Presbyterian Shrine Church.
In late 1997, she and her husband were awarded the New Era Red Rose, a newspaper award for humanitarian service.
Surviving are her husband, Fred A. Williams, with whom she celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary on June 23; a daughter, Margaret Young of Washington, D.C.; a son, Fred A. Williams of Richmond, Va.; four grandchildren; and a brother, Charles W. Young of Leesburg, Fla.

Drew Everett Wright, 2, of Greensboro R.D.1, died Sunday, August 2, 1998, at his home.
He was born November 28, 1995, in Fort Campbell, Ky., a son of Carl E. and Sherry L. Wise Wright.
Surviving, in addition to his parents, are a brother, Jonathon, at home; maternal grandparents, William and Janette Williams Wise of Carmichaels R.D.3; maternal great-grandparents, Edna Wegman of Elkins, W.Va., and Goldie Morris Wise of Greensboro R.D.1; paternal grandparents Frank Eugene and Dolly Gump Wright of Jefferson; paternal great-grandparents, Sarah Elizabeth Yost Wright of Waynesburg and Eva Gump of Waynesburg.

She was born December 21, 1922, in Westland, a daughter of John Stella Oskier McAnany.
Mrs. Barnes was a homemaker and a member of Cecil Alliance Church.
On November 20, 1942, she married Robert H. Barnes, who survives.
The couple had celebrated 56 years of marriage.
Also surviving are a daughter, Kathleen Krek of Houston; a son, Robert A. Barnes of Canonsburg; a sister, Kathleen Ranegar of Cleveland, Ohio; four grandchildren, Donald R. and Jason A. Krek, Carey L. and Allen R. Barnes.

He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II.
He was retired in 1985 following 33 years of service with Mellon Bank Corp.
He was married to Genevieve Lahoski, who survives.
Also surviving are five sons, Tom of Canonsburg, Dan of Philadelphia, Jack of Aiken, S.C., Jim of Peters Township and Terry of Oswego, N.Y.; and 12 grandchildren.

Margaret DiRito, 71, of Ellsworth, died Monday, August 3, 1998, in Manor Care, McMurray.
She was born September 24, 1926, in Tower Hill, a daughter of John and Anna Panculich Sheragy.
Mrs. DiRito was a member of Ave Maria Parish of Bentleyville.
Surviving are two sons, William DiRito of Finleyville, and Guy DiRito of San Antonio, Texas; a sister, Agatha "Sue" Potoczny of Bentleyville; three grandchildren, Robert, Melissa and Jenifer; and a great-grandson.
Deceased are her husband, Anthony DiRito who died in 1991; two brothers, John and Michael Sheragy; five sisters, Anne Castrogiovanni, Barbara DaValle, Judith Prokell, Irene Bowers and Marie Nasal; and a granddaughter, Tonya DiRito, who died May 16, 1995.
