John Michalka Jr.
Retired superintendent for carpenters union
John Michalka Jr., 71, of Midway, died Wednesday, July 29, 1998, in his home.
He was born April 21, 1927, in Midway, a son of John Sr. and Mary Kunocha Michalka.
Mr. Michalka was a 1945 graduate of Burgettstown High School and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
He was superintendent for United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America Local 142, retiring in 1982. During his career, he was responsible for building European Health Spas and Shippingport Power Plant.
He was a member of Center Presbyterian Church, Midway, where he was a member of the Mariner's group, and served as elder and chairman of the building committee, building the parsonage, church and education wing.
Mr. Michalka was a member of Burgettstown Grange 1502, the Pennsylvania State Grange, Midway Senior Citizens and served on the Center Cemetery board of which he was past treasurer.
On April 29, 1950, he married Rebecca (Becky) Campbell, who survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Rodney J. of Belton, Mo., and John W. of Canonsburg; two daughters, Marilyn Egan of Cranberry Township and Roberta Cadman of Pearland, Texas; five grandchildren, Rebekah Hough, Matthew Cadman and Joseph, Holly and Jay Michalka; a brother, Method Michalka of Meadow Lands; and a sister, Ann Lescallette of New Lexington, Ohio.
Deceased are a brother, Cyril; and two sisters, Mary Gaydos and Margaret Lounder.
Patrick B. Roach

Patrick Bevan Roach, 13, of 89 Dire Wolf Lane, West Augusta, Va., died July 17, 1998, at his home.
He was born November 20, 1984, in Pittsburgh, a son of Judi Marie Roach of West Augusta, formerly of Eighty Four.
He was a rising eighth-grade student at Beverley Manor Middle School and had been a member of the seventh-grade band. He was a member of Cub Scout Pack 8 and Boy Scout Troop 126. Patrick had earned a snorkeling badge and several other merit badges and recently earned the one-mile swim badge.
Surviving are his maternal grandmother, Yvonne L. Roach of Matlacha, Fla.; aunts and uncles Lynn D. and Jean Roach of Key West, Fla., and Mary Ann and T.R. Roberts of Muse; and cousins Carey Ann and Mark Layne Roach, Janet and Kevin Sanetrik and Melanie Murray.

Dorothy Mae Cox Runnion, 85, of East 39th Street, Lorain, Ohio, died Tuesday, July 28, 1998, in her home. Mrs. Runnion was formerly of Wolfdale and had resided in Lorain since 1988.
She was born September 2, 1912, in Wolfdale, a daughter of William and Anna Anderson Cox.
Mrs. Runnion was a homemaker and a member of Fourth Presbyterian Church in Washington. She was active while attending there and loved working with the Ladies Aid Society of the church.
She attended First Presbyterian Church while residing in Lorain.
Mrs. Runnion enjoyed working in her flower garden.
On October 27, 1928, she married Alfred Dell Runnion, who died March 22, 1991.
Surviving are three daughters, Dolores Marie Hirst of Lorain, Alfreda Rosella Taylor of Avon Lake, Ohio, and Ronda Doreen Smith of Delaware, Ohio; six grandchildren, Sandra Smith, Ronnah Luman, Kristi Revercomb, David D. Taylor, Gwen Koob and Doug Smith; 12 great-grandchildren; one step-great-granddaughter; three great-great-grandchildren; and three step-great-great-grandchildren.
Deceased are three brothers, Edward, Raymond and Bernard Cox and a sister, Anna Mabel Bailey.
John "Pete" Walchuck
Served in U.S. Air Force during World War II
John "Pete" Walchuck, 77, of Daisytown, formerly of Westland and Brownsville, died Tuesday, July 28, 1998, at Fayette Health Center, Uniontown.
He was born June 9, 1921, a son of Frank and Agnes Pustalak Walchuck.
Mr. Walchuck was retired from McGraw-Edison in Canonsburg.
He had served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II.
Surviving are two sisters, Anna Blavos of the state of California and Dorothy Cwiklinski of Canonsburg and several nieces and nephews.

Esther Marie Weiss Bandel, 67, of Bandel Road, Eighty Four, died at 7:38 p.m. Wednesday, July 29, 1998, in her home.
She was born May 3, 1931, in Pittsburgh, a daughter of Gladys Dewitt Weiss of Taylorstown and the late George E. Weiss Sr.
Mrs. Bandel was a postal worker in the Eighty Four Post Office, retiring in 1991, and also was owner/operator of Bandel Airport in Eighty Four.
She was a member of Seventh Day Adventist Church in Washington.
Surviving are three sons, Bruce Jay Bandel of Eighty Four, Kurt Robert Bandel of Cicero, Ind., and Greg Allen Bandel of Marianna; three daughters, Cindy Hamstra of Eighty Four, and Lynn Cress and Jennifer Bandel, both of Calhoun, Ga.; two brothers, George Weiss Jr. and Warren Weiss, both of Taylorstown; a sister, Pamela Byers of Cicero, Ind.; and 12 grandchildren, Rebecca, Aaron, Matthew, Rachel, Ryan, Sara, Joshua, Anna and Reba Bandel, Tyler and Ashley Hamstra, and Meredith Cress.

World War II veteran was active in grange
Richard C. Pees, 80, of Michigan Avenue, Washington, died at 12:15 p.m. Thursday, July 30, 1998, in the Washington Hospital emergency room.
He was born July 13, 1918, in Eighty Four, a son of Glen Elmer and Zoetta Clemens Pees.
Mr. Pees was a retired farmer and truck driver.
He was a member of Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder and trustee.
He was a member of Chestnut Ridge Grange, Washington Grange, Pomona State Grange and National Grange and was a member of the Washington-Greene County Antique Tractor Association.
Mr. Pees was a 1937 graduate of Trinity High School.
During World War II, he was with the 28th Division 110th Infantry Regiment in the European Theater, serving in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, the Ardennes and Central Europe. He received the Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Service Medal and the European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal with five bronze stars. He was a member of Edwin Scott Linton American Legion Post 175, serving on the firing squad.
On May 17, 1946, in Independence, he married Gladys Griffith, who died November 10, 1988.
Surviving are a daughter, Mary Esther Pees at home; a brother Dwight E. Pees of Washington; three nieces; and two nephews.
Deceased are a sister, Gwendlyn M. Stockdale; and a brother, Homer G. Pees.

Susan S. Rash, 89, of Langeloth, died Wednesday, July 22, 1998, in her home.
She was born June 25, 1909, in New Cumberland, W.Va., a daughter of Steven and Susie Sompin.
On June 8, 1932, she married John Rash, who died December 27, 1972.
Surviving are two daughters, Joan Baronio Lucarini of McDonald and Susan Scott of Weirton, W.Va.; one son, Donald J. of Langeloth; one sister, Mary of Cleveland, Ohio; seven grandchildren, D.J. and Scott Philip Rash, Thomas and Daniel Baronio, Timothy Lucarini, Katy Novalis and Vicki Hricz; four great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.
Deceased are one son, John Jr.; two sisters; three brothers; and one great-grandson.
Services were private. Interment was in Paris Cemetery.

John R. (Jack) Smith, 78, of Brookline, died Wednesday, July 29, 1998, in his home, following a three-month illness.
He was born February 18, 1920, in Greenfield, a son of John and Jean Smith.
Mr. Smith was owner and operator of the 6:30 Club in Brookline, retiring in July 1990.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
Mr. Smith was a 50-year member of the Masons.
On December 15, 1955, he married Mary Samson Smith, who survives.
Also surviving are two daughters, Joanne Valco of Brentwood and Jackie Jurcevich of Washington; three granddaughters, Jessica, Jennifer and Lauren Jurcevich; a brother, William (Bill) Smith of Brentwood; and a niece.

He was born August 24, 1924, in Canonsburg, a son of Wanda Kobrys Tedeschi.
Mr. Tedeschi was a member of St. Genevieve Worship Site of St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church.
He was employed by Fort Pitt Bridge Works, Canonsburg, and retired from Cooper Industries, Canonsburg, where he worked in the shipping and receiving department.
Mr. Tedeschi was a lifelong resident of Canonsburg.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army in England, and was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 191 of Canonsburg and American Legion Post 902 of Houston.
Mr. Tedeschi enjoyed fishing and attending flea markets

Mrs. Calabro was a homemaker.
She was a member of Christian Church of North America, Victoria Lodge 76 and the Alpine Club. She also enjoyed cooking.
In 1920, she married Carl Calabro. who died May 9, 1978.

Sara Ann Chappel, 74, of Sunset Boulevard, Washington, died at 11 p.m. Wednesday, July 1, 1998, in her home. She had been in declining health since 1992.
She was born August 18, 1923, in Meadow Lands, a daughter of John "Crabby" Hoeffler Sr. and Margorie Whitfield Hoeffler.
Mrs. Chappel was a homemaker, a member of Meadow Lands Methodist Church and attended Chartiers-Houston High School.
On February 4, 1949, she married James Franklin Chappel, who died October 23, 1966.
Surviving are a son, Franklin Lee Chappel of Washington; a daughter, Barbara Ann Chappel of Washington; and two grandchildren, Christopher Lee and Nathan James Chappel.

George F. Boles Sr.

George Francis Boles Sr., 78, formerly of Washington, died Friday, July 10, 1998, in Altercare, Mentor, Ohio.
He was born December 23, 1919, a son of Ainlsey and Lelah Boles.
He was a member of First Baptist Church of Washington, a graduate of Washington High School and a 1941 graduate of Washington and Jefferson College.
During World War II, he was a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy, where he served in the Pacific Theater.
Mr. Boles was employed by Sears from 1945 until his retirement in 1983. He started in the Washington store and managed stores in Uniontown; Warren, Ohio; and Ashtabula, Ohio.
He was a deacon of Prospect Presbyterian Church of Ashtabula, a member of the Rotary Club and Odd Fellows, an adviser to the Boy Scouts and a volunteer with SCORE, Habitat for Humanity and the Salvation Army.
Mr. Boles was twice married. On January 15, 1943, he married Jean Williams of Washington, who died in 1975. On October 18, 1977, he married Mary Pinkley of Painesville, Ohio, who died June 16, 1998.
Surviving are a son, Frank Boles of Mentor, Ohio; a daughter, Jacqueline Sherman of Warren, Ohio; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Deceased, in addition to his parents, is a brother, Paul E. Boles.

Mrs. Clark and her husband resided in Donora until 1960, when they moved to Florida. They later moved to West Newton before returning to Donora.
Surviving are a daughter, Edna Budd of Rostraver Township; a son, William G. Clark of Donora; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.

Sam John Kazarick, 78, of McAdam Avenue, Washington, died at 1:25 a.m. Saturday, July 11, 1998, in Aspinwall Veterans Hospital. He had been ill since January.
He was born December 11, 1919, in Washington, a son of Martin and Mary Migut Kazarick.
Prior to his retirement, he was employed as a foreman at Taggart Valley Glass and later at Brockway Glass, Washington.
Mr. Kazarick was a member of St. Hilary Roman Catholic Church, Washington.
During World War II, he served with the U.S. Army in the European Theater in the 45th Division. He was wounded in action and received a Purple Heart.
He was a member of Edwin Scott Linton Post 175 of the American Legion and the Pulaski Club.
On October 27, 1945, he married Ann Mary Machacek, who died September 8, 1992.
Surviving are three sons, John Rudolph Kazarick of Uniontown, Joseph Martin Kazarick of Ingomar and Edward Stanley Kazarick of Phoenix, Ariz.; two brothers, Stanley and Walter Kazarick, both of Washington; two sisters, Katherine Shook and Helen Bick, both of Washington; and four grandchildren, Jeffrey, Jennifer, Maria and Jessica.

Miss McKown was a graduate of Grove City College, where she earned a degree in business and education.
She was employed by RCA Corp. for more than 25 years.
She was a member of the former First Presbyterian Church of Canonsburg and enjoyed golfing.
Miss McKown made her home with Anthony Talotta for 28 years.
Surviving are a sister, Sally Hutchinson of Canonsburg; and three nephews.

Mrs. Nogier was a homemaker and a member of St. Ann's Roman Catholic Church, Bulger.
On March 25, 1916, she married Joseph Nogier, who died April 27, 1981.
Surviving are three daughters, Marie J. Antonetti of Bulger, Rose Grimm of Pittsburgh and Charlotte Obreza of McDonald; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

She was born January 24, 1924, in Washington, a daughter of Thomas E. Cox Sr. and Cinda Horner Cox.
Mrs. Stetson was a homemaker and had attended Hayes Avenue School as a youth. She was a member of Alpine Bowling League and enjoyed playing bingo.
She attended North Buffalo United Presbyterian Church, when her health permitted.
On June 16, 1940, she married Charles O. Stetson Sr., who died April 12, 1983.
Surviving are a son, Charles O. Stetson Jr., with whom she made her home; a sister, Florence M. Daniels of Bentleyville; and several nieces and nephews.
Deceased are an infant daughter, Sandra Stetson; four brothers, Thomas E. Cox Jr., John C., Sylvan L. and James L. Cox; and two sisters, Ruby May and Ruth G. Cox.

Before her retirement, she had been employed at the Isaly's Store in Donora for 28 years.
Mrs. Tesolin was a member of Epiphany of Our Lord Church of Monessen.
Surviving are a brother, Mike Borelli of Van Voorhis; three sisters, Antoinette Barkey of Van Voorhis, Rose Danilchak of Speers and Edith Popinchalk of Washington; and many nieces and nephews.

She was born November 6, 1917, in Scenery Hill, a daughter of Stewart and Sarah Hawkins Riggians.
In 1979, she retired from Woodville State Hospital, where she was employed as a psychiatric aide.
Mrs. Wolford was a member of the Church of the Nazarene in McDonald.
Her husband, James D. Wolford Sr., died February 9, 1980.
Surviving are three daughters, Pearl Lee Bushmire of Pittsburgh and Barbara Jean Malachow and Patricia Mae Gillespie, both of Bridgeville; a son, Gerald W. Wolford of Southview; a sister, Betty Levers of Washington; 18 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter.

B. S. "Bud" Bailey, Jr., 72, formerly of Washington, died Sunday, July 12, 1998, in Phoeniz, Ariz.
He was born September 6, 1925, in West Newton.
Mr. Bailey served with the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II.
Prior to moving to Arizona in 1964, he was employed for 22 years with Hazel-Atlas Glass Co. He retired in 1985 after 20 years with Sentry Insurance Company.
He served as an exalted ruler in the Washington Lodge of B.P.O.E. (Elks).
Surviving are his wife, Iona M. Runion Bailey; two children Patti and Larry; and a brother, Cecil H. Bailey.

William Budkey Jr., 69, of 11 Tunnel Street, West Alexander, died Monday, July 13, 1998.
Mr. Budkey was born on October 27, 1928 in Canonsburg, a son of William E. and Anna Homerosky Budkey.
He lived in West Alexander for the past five years. Prior to that, he lived in the Canonsburg area and North Carolina for 6 years.
Prior to his retirement in 1987, he was employed by General Ionics as a steelburner. Mr. Budkey served with the activated 28 Infantry Division of the Pennsylvania National Guard during the Korean War.
Surviving are his wife, Sylvia Zrimsek Budkey; one son, Barry L. Budkey of West Alexander; one step-son, Dale Cooper of Fort Worth, Texas; one brother, Joseph Budkey; four sisters, Joan Smith of Strabane, Peggy Tornabene of Fairmont, W.Va., Doris Devich of Beaver and Connie Matrogran of Canonsburg; one grandson; six step-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Elmer C. Gerhart, 89, of Joffre, formerly of Pittsburgh, died Sunday, July 12, 1998. He was born May 19, 1909.
His wife, Alma Davis Gerhart, is deceased.
Surviving are six children, Robert J. Gerhart of Arizona, Alma M. Timko of Virginia, Raymond E. Gerhart of Verona and Lois J. Neely of Ohio, Carol A. Mike of Joffre and Donald T. Gerhart of St. Clair; and 16 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Word has been received of the death of Ester Hastings Roberts, 95, of Tallmadge, Ohio, who died July 3, 1998.
She had spent the last five years at Colonial Gardens in Tallmadge and prior to living there, she was under the care of her son and daughter-in-law, Frank and Era Hastings of Akron, Ohio.
Originally from Washington, she had lead an active life in Akron for 51 years. She was active in local womens' organizations.
She was married to William Roberts, who is deceased.
Surviving are two sons, Lewis Hastings of Eighty Four and Frank Hastings of Akron; one daughter, Hazle Hastings Popper of San Jose, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; 21 great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Margaret Ackerman of Canonsburg.
Interment was in Greenlawn Cemetery in Akron.

Stefanie Marie Brock, 16, of Spokane, Wash., formerly of Hinesville, Ga., and Morgantown, W.Va., died May 11, 1998, as a victim of homicide in Spokane.
She was born May 23, 1981, in Hinesville, a daughter of the former Evelyn Ann (Lynn) Howard and Leander A. Brock, both originally from Brave, who now reside in Morgantown and Spokane, respectively.
Surviving are a sister, Jennifer Brock Richardson of Lawton, Okla.; maternal grandparents, Janet Erickson of Annapolis, Md., and G. Michael Howard of Morgantown; and paternal grandparents, Mildred Merritt of Elkhart, Ind., and William Brock of McKeesport.
Stefanie made her home with her father, his wife, Kathy, and her children, Michael and Kelly.

She was born July 18, 1911, in Manifold, a daughter of Paul and Katherine Scardamaglia Piccolo.
Mrs. Cimino was a mother and homemaker and a member of St. Hilary Church in Washington. She was a member of Victoria Lodge 79, where she had worked bingo for many years.
She was employed by Fi Del Cleaners of Washington for 20 years.
On June 4, 1933, she married Samuel Cimino Sr., who died December 15, 1985.
Surviving are two sons, Samuel P. and Ronald I. Cimino, both of Washington; two sisters, Katherine Boni of Burgettstown and Ann DeMaria of Washington; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Dana E. Filer
Teacher, football coach in Beth-Center School District
Dana E. Filer, 64, of 44 Rohanna Court, Waynesburg, died at 8:10 p.m. Monday, July 13, 1998, in Greene County Memorial Hospital.
He was born September 9, 1933, in Mather, a son of the late Henry and Edith Brain Filer.
Mr. Filer was manager of the Waynesburg office of the Pennsylvania Job Service, retiring in 1988. He was previously employed as a teacher and junior high football coach in Bethlehem-Center School District.
He was a member of Mather Christian Church, Filer-Sadlek American Legion Post 954 and a life member of Greene County Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3491 in Carmichaels.
Mr. Filer served in the U.S. Air Force as a staff sergeant and was a graduate of Waynesburg College.
He enjoyed playing sandlot baseball and golf, and had coached Little League baseball.
On October 15, 1957, he married Mary Ann Mooney Filer, who survives.
Also surviving are two daughters, Tammy Bryan and Tonya Patton, both of Waynesburg; a son, Dana Nolan Lynch of Fullerton, Calif.; four grandchildren, Frankie and Lee Bryan, and Cody and Randi Lee Patton; and a sister, Verna Wright of Levittown.
Deceased are three brothers, Robert H., Alfred and Donald E. Filer.
Mary Gavaghan-Dawson
Member of Church of Jesus Christ, Monongahela
Mary R. Gavaghan-Dawson, 77, of Main Street, Monongahela, died Monday, July 13, 1998, in Mon Valley Hospital.
She was born February 24, 1921, in Carroll Township, a daughter of James C. and Martha Belle Baxter Cowan.
Mrs. Gavaghan-Dawson was a member of Church of Jesus Christ, Monongahela.
She was retired from Mayview State Hospital after 17 years of service.
On July 13, 1996, she married Wilfred C. Dawson, who survives.
Also surviving are two daughters, Colleen Christy of Warren and Mary Jane Sutts of Finleyville; a son, James Gavaghan of Carroll Township; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; 13 stepgreat-grandchildren; a stepdaughter, Donna Moody of Fallowfield Township; and two sisters, Margaret Johnson and Dorothy Schaeffer, both of Monongahela.
Deceased are her first husband, James P. Gavaghan, who died July 7, 1976; three brothers, Lloyd, Ralph and Ellis "Windy" Cowan; four sisters, Amanda Byers, Martha Belle Seighman, Ruth Kirschner and Harriett Byers; one granddaughter, Rebecca Gavaghan; and a grandson, Jeffery Charlton.
