EthylMae Knepshield, 84, of Alemander Avenue, Debary, Fla., died Wednesday, July 22, 1998, in Florida Hospital Fish Memorial, Orange City, Fla. She was born March 27, 1914, in McDonald, a daughter of August and Mary Katherine Bondy. Mrs. Knepshield was a homemaker and was Presbyterian. She was a graduate of Indiana State Teachers College. In 1993, she moved from Eustis, Fla., to Debary. Surviving are two daughters, Janis Collette of Debary and Christy Ann Albert of Tampa, Fla.; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Albert Keith Meneely
Veteran of World War II served with five brothers
Albert Keith Meneely, 72, of Marseilles, Ill., formerly of Independence, died Thursday, July 16, 1998, in Edward Hines Veterans Administration Hospital, Hines, Ill. He was born December 13, 1925, in Independence, a son of Clarence and Wanetta Cooper Meneely. Mr. Meneely was retired with 23 years of service with the Navy and also was an electrician at Mayport Naval Shipyards in Florida. He was a veteran of World War II, serving with five brothers at the same time. Mr. Meneely was a member of John Martin Steel Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6049 and Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge 967. Surviving are a son, David Meneely of Marseilles, Ill.; a daughter, Patricia Conley of Coal City, Ill.; three brothers, Harold "Lefty" Meneely of Bethany, W.Va., Charles Meneely of San Bernardino, Calif., and Harry "Red" Meneely of Parkersburg, W.Va.; three sisters, Beulah Meneely of Wellsburg, W.Va., and Naomi Meneely and Majorie Kirschner, both of Washington; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Deceased are his wife, Maria Bergoetz Meneely, who died in 1988; and two brothers, Dwight "Bud" and Emmett "Shorty" Meneely. Services and interment were held Monday, July 20, at the convenience of the family. Arrangements were handled by Reasner Funeral Home, 1515 Charles Street, Wellsburg, W.Va.

Joseph J. Moscovic Jr.
Member of St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church
Joseph J. Moscovic Jr., 83, of 121 North Central Avenue, Canonsburg, died Wednesday, July 22, 1998, in his home. He was born August 4, 1914, in Meadow Lands, a son of Joseph J. Sr. and Lucy Bujnak Moscovic. Mr. Moscovic was a lifelong resident of Canonsburg and a 1934 graduate of Canonsburg High School, where he was a member of the football and wrestling teams. Prior to his retirement, he was employed for 42 years as a steel burner for Fort Pitt Bridge Works. He was a member of St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church, Fraternal Order of Eagles, Labor Temple and S.N.P.J. Lodge of Strabane. Surviving are a son, Richard Moscovic of Clarkston, Mich.; a daughter, Patricia Capiola of Gulfport, Miss.; four brothers, John Moscovic of North Olmstead, Ohio, Steve Moscovic of Buffalo, N.Y., Frank Moscovic of Tonawanda, N.Y., and Tom Moscovic of Cleveland, Ohio; four sisters, Ann Tomsic and Betty Zaken, both of Tonawanda, N.Y., and Mary Tyburski and Dorothy Maslocha, both of Cleveland, Ohio; six grandchildren, Dr. Richard Capiola, Nancy Laney, Andrew Capiola, and Dean, Derek and Drew Moscovic; and two great-grandchildren. Deceased are his wife, Mary E. Moscovic; and a brother, Paul Moscovic.

Anna R. Sonoga
Founding member of church altar society
Anna Sonoga, 81, of Marianna, died Wednesday, July 22, 1998, in Washington Hospital. She was born January 7, 1917, in Brier Hill, a daughter of Matthew and Maria Hradesky Sonoga. Miss Sonoga attended Marianna Schools and was a member of St. Oliver Plunkett Parish, Sts. Mary and Ann Roman Catholic Church, where she was one of the founding members of the altar society. She also was a member of Zenska Jednota Chapter 68 First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association of Uniontown. Miss Sonoga had worked as a cashier at Krusik's Grocery Store in Marianna for many years before her retirement. Surviving are two sisters, Cecelia A. Gallick of Marianna and Veronica Poplarchik Koval of Sharon; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are two brothers, Stephan and John Sonoga; and a sister, Mary Kavulic.

Alice C. Whoolery
Longtime Mather resident was Jehovah's Witness
Alice C. Whoolery, 88, of Seventh Street, Mather, died Wednesday, July 22, 1998, in Greene County Memorial Hospital, Waynesburg. She was born May 10, 1910, in Grantsville, Md., a daughter of William and Mary Dress Colflesh. Mrs. Whoolery was a homemaker and had resided in Mather since 1922. She was a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witness in Carmichaels. On August 26, 1926, she married James F. Whoolery, who died July 19, 1981. Surviving are three daughters, Betty Horne of Marianna, Faye McIntyre of Waynesburg R.D.1 and Joyce Faddis of Rices Landing R.D.1; a sister, Ruth Myers of Greensburg; a brother, William Steinrich of Salisbury; 18 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Deceased are a daughter, Dorothy Bane; and three sons, James Franklin and Harold Edward Whoolery, and a son who died in infancy.

Mary Jane Zurenski, 71, of Monongahela, died Wednesday, July 22, 1998, in Monongahela Valley Hospital. She was a lifelong resident of Monongahela and was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church. Mrs. Zurenski was formerly employed at Hills Restaurant of New Eagle and Angelo's Restaurant of Monongahela. Surviving are a son, Ronald E. "Zurch" Zurenski of Monongahela; two grandchildren, Matthew and Melissa Zurenski; two sisters, Helen Rotta of Monongahela and Rose Nyiri of West Mifflin; and a brother, Edward Mitchell of Finleyville. Deceased are her husband, Frank S. Zurenski, who died in 1991; a son, Frank A. Zurenski, who died in 1982; and three brothers, Emil and Adolph Mitchell and Walter Michalec.

Catherine Charlier
Psychiatric aid for Mayview State Hospital
Catherine L. Charlier, 50, of McDonald, died Friday, July 24, 1998, in her home. She was born February 7, 1948 in Canonsburg, a daughter of the late Clyde and Clara Sheets. Mrs. Charlier was a 1966 graduate of Canon-McMillan High School and was employed as a psychiatric aid for Mayview State Hospital, Bridgeville. She was a member of Independent Bible Presbyterian Church and the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees. On June 15, 1970, she married Ronald C. Charlier, who survives. Also surviving are a son, Ronald J., at home; two daughters, Cindy L. Gonze of McDonald and Linda S. Merritt of Baden; one brother, Russell Sheets of McConnel Mills; two sisters, Shirley McDonald of Muse and Judy Cass of Canonsburg; and two grandchildren. Deceased are two brothers, Robert and Pete Sheets.

James W. Crawford
Retired farm manager at Woodville State Hospital
James W. Crawford, 90, of South Fayette, died Thursday, July 23, 1998. He was a son of Walter and Edna Crawford and was employed by Woodville State Hospital for 28 years, retiring as assistant farm manager. Surviving are two stepdaughters, Elsie C. Rutan of the state of California and Ellen T. Fair of South Fayette; three brothers, William Crawford of Arizona, Wallace Crawford of Pennsylvania and Eugene Crawford of Ohio; one sister, Mildred Hull of North Carolina; two grandchildren, Linda Vogt and John F. Rutan Jr.; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are his wife, Jane R. Crawford; one grandson, Larry Turopolec; three brothers, Oliver, Robert "Red" and Walter "Dutch" Crawford; and three sisters, Leah Miller, Nellie Ritter and Lena Crawford.

Bennie Fletcher

Bennie Fletcher, 87, of Michigan, formerly of McDonald, died Tuesday, July 21, 1998, in Michigan. Surviving are his wife, Lillie Fletcher; two daughters, Edith Thornton and Dora Fletcher; two grandchildren, Carla Fletcher and Jylle Thornton; and one great-granddaughter.

James Higgins Sr.
Retired engineer for Peoples Natural Gas
James Franklin "Little Frank" Higgins Sr., 72, of Waynesburg R.D.3, died Thursday, July 23, 1998, in his residence following a lengthy illness. Mr. Higgins was born August 15, 1925, in Pickensville, a son of Enos Walker and Margaret Lee Spicer Higgins. He was employed as a pump station engineer and warehouse worker for Peoples Natural Gas for 38 years, four months, before retiring May 1, 1982. He was a member of Fairall United Methodist Church, Whiteley Township, Greene County, and a former member of the church choir. He was also the treasurer of the Greene County Red Fox Chasers Association and was a member of the Pennsylvania State Red Fox Chasers Association. Surviving are three daughters, Mary Jo Helen Shriver of Mt. Morris Star Route, Waynesburg, Lois Elizabeth Higgins of Waynesburg and Katrina Vernon of Mt. Morris; two sons, Joseph W. Higgins of Waynesburg R.D.2 and James F. Higgins Jr. of Waynesburg R.D.3; two sisters, Mary Blair of Waynesburg R.D.3 and Shirley Sanner of Carmichaels; 14 grandchildren; nine great- grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He made his home with Vicki Funk. Deceased are his wife, Doris Hildred Phillips Higgins, who died March 14, 1966; one daughter, Margaret Alta Higgins; one sister, Helen Conner; and one grandson, Scott Albert Shriver.

Bobette A. Hutchinson

Bobette A. Hutchinson, 69, of Clarksville, died Wednesday, July 22, 1998, in Greene County Memorial Hospital. She was born May 23, 1929, in Clarksville, a daughter of Thomas and Irene Sylvester Davis. Mrs. Hutchinson was a 1948 graduate of Jefferson-Morgan High School and was employed for many years at Amalgamated Garment Co. in Waynesburg, from where she retired. Surviving is a brother, Thomas Davis of Pawleys Island, S.C. Deceased is her husband, Frank Hutchinson, who died January 28, 1993.

Shirley Jean Mancuso
Member of Central Assembly of God
Shirley Jean Mancuso, 63, of Cumberland Avenue, Washington, died unexpectedly at 2:16 p.m. Friday, July 24, 1998, in Washington Hospital. She was born June 23, 1935, in Donora, a daughter of the late John Edward and Ruth Sickles Estel. Mrs. Mancuso was a retired employee of the former Metro Glass Co. and had formerly worked at Hazel Glass Plant No. 2. She was a member of Central Assembly of God in Houston and was a former officer in Washington Aglow. On July 17, 1964, she married Albert Mancuso, who survives. Also surviving are two sons, Harold "Pete" Berdine of Richeyville and Edward Fisher of Washington; two daughters, Linda Murr of Washington and Janet Higgins of Eighty Four; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Deceased are two grandsons, Joshua Lowe and Marcus Allan; a brother, Ralph Estel; and a sister, Alice Noble.

Joseph Scaccia

Joseph Scaccia, 96, of 622 Park Street, California, died at 10:10 a.m. Friday, July 24, 1998, in his home. He was born February 4, 1902, in Italy, a son of Vito and Rose Sero Scaccia. Mr. Scaccia attended California area schools and was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Church of California. He came to the United States as a child from Italy and worked as a coal miner for Republic Steel-Coal and J & L Coal and also was owner and operator of Scaccia Bus Line. Surviving are his wife, Mary Albenze Scaccia; a son, Vito Scaccia of California; four daughters, Rose Densmore of Daisytown, Mildred Galsbauer of Wexford, Virginia Bair of California and Frances Campbell of Fairborn, Ohio; a brother, Samuel Scaccia of state of California; four sisters, Bertha Emmer of North Carolina, Jane Russell and Josephine Lynn, both of state of California, and Rose Chanes of Florida; nine grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. Deceased are a brother, Frank Scotch; two sisters, Frances Giampia and Ann McGlaughlin; and a grandson, Joseph Bair, who died February 2, 1985.

James Eli Ulery

James Eli Ulery, 92, of Washington, died at 1:04 a.m. Friday, July 24, 1998, in Allegheny University Hospitals-Canonsburg, following a brief illness. He was born May 13, 1906, in Washington, a son of Eli George and Minnie Ewing Ulery. Mr. Ulery was a retired employee of Crile Machine Co. of Washington and former employee of Hazel Atlas Glass Plant No. 2 until its closing. He was a member of West Washington United Methodist Church and the men's Bible class of the church. Mr. Ulery was a 1927 graduate of Trinity High School, and he enjoyed gardening and golfing. On June 3, 1934, in Amity, he married Margaret Fritschle Ulery, who died August 10, 1991. Surviving are two sons, James M. Ulery Sr. of Latrobe and Kenneth George Ulery of Washington; two grandsons, Dr. James M. Ulery Jr. and John M. Ulery; a brother, Thomas L. Ulery of Claysville; and two sisters, Dorothy McBride of Washington and Ida Mae Ulery of Hollywood, Fla. Deceased is a sister, Blanche Anderson.

Timothy Wayne Yuhas
1977 graduate of Fort Cherry High School
Timothy Wayne Yuhas, 39, of Elm Road, Hickory, died Thursday, July 23, 1998. He was born January 13, 1959, in Washington, a son of Agnes Josephine Klages Yuhas of Hickory and the late Joseph Yuhas. Mr. Yuhas was Protestant and was an optician, having been employed by 20-20 opticians of Squirrel Hill. He was a 1977 graduate of Fort Cherry High School and studied photography with Jay Stock. Mr. Yuhas enjoyed hunting, fishing, photography, woodworking, gardening and he raised roses. Surviving, in addition to his mother, are a brother, Joseph Emery Yuhas of Avella; a sister, Barbara Ann Batove of Hickory; three nieces; and two nephews.

Bob Robertson
Long-time newspaperman, dies at age 62
Robert Lynn Robertson Sr., a newspaperman who wrote about Washington County news and politics for nearly 40 years, died Friday, July 24, 1998. He was 62. Few people knew more about Washington County politics than Robertson, who covered the county courthouse for the Observer-Reporter for more than 15 years. He covered one of the biggest stories in county history - the Yablonski murders and the trials that followed - since it broke in January 1970. "I remember he was competent, interesting and an interested person," said Washington County President Judge Thomas D. Gladden. "He was always glad to see you on the streets and he always had a nice word to say. He was always inquisitive." He was born July 17, 1936, in Washington, a son of the late George S. and Mary Bennington Robertson. He was a 1954 graduate of Washington High School. After his graduation from Washington and Jefferson College in 1958, he studied for a year at Ohio University's School of Journalism before joining the staff of theWashington Observer in 1959. He left the paper to work for a string of weekly papers in Philadelphia, and later the Jeannette News-Dispatch before returning to the Observer Publishing Co. in 1963. He worked at the paper's Canonsburg office before taking his assignment at the courthouse in 1965. Later in his career, he became business editor and Sunday editor of the Observer-Reporter. He left the paper in 1989 to devote more time to his own business, the Bassettown Deli. In recent years, he wrote articles for the Washington edition of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "I appreciated his thorough news coverage of city matters but also his involvement in community activities," said Washington Mayor L. Anthony Spossey. "We are going to miss him in this area." He wrote a book, "Fight onto Victory" about the Washington High School football teams. Robertson was a member of Sunset Lodge 623, F&AM, and Washington Lions Club. He was also a member of First Christian Church of Washington, where he served as an elder and deacon. For several years, he was active as manager and coach in the Washington Youth Baseball program and for many years helped in the press box as a scorekeeper and clock operator for W&J football games. He was married Sept. 5, 1964, to Shirley Sargent, who survives. Also surviving are three children, Becky, George and Robert L. Jr.; and a sister, Patricia Humbert of Washington.
