Vera Culley
Taught knitting classes throughout Burgettstown
Vera Culley, 84, of Langeloth, died Saturday, July 4, 1998, in Washington County Health Center.
She was born May 10, 1914, in Guthrie, Ky., a daughter of the late Jessie and Nancy Davis.
Mrs. Culley was a night auditor for the Airport Hotel until her retirement and for many years, she taught knitting classes throughout the Burgettstown area.
She was a member of the Langeloth Church of Christ and the Burgettstown Senior Citizens.
Surviving are a son, Tom Davis of Palmdale, Calif.; four daughters, Nancy Diaz of Langeloth, Audrey Jordan of Las Vegas, Nev., Jackie Eakin of Avella, and Jerry Wilson of Bordentown, N.J.; 19 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren; four step great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren; three brothers, George Davis of Gainesville, Fla., Jack Davis of Langeloth, and Dean Davis of Wesley Chapel, Fla.
Deceased are two brothers, Marion and J. T. Davis; one grandchild, and one great-grandchild.
Leoma F. Ealy
Active in First Church of the Nazarene, Waynesburg
Leoma F. "Becky" Ealy, 73, of Waynesburg R.D.5, died Saturday, July 4, 1998, in Greene County Memorial Hospital.
She was born February 7, 1925, in Apollo, a daughter of Victor and Beatrice Viola Neatrour.
Mrs. Ealy attended Moody Bible Institute in Chicago.
She was a member of First Church of the Nazarene in Waynesburg, where she served for many years as director of youth ministries and as a Sunday school teacher. She also worked with her husband to establish the church's Golden Achiever Senior Adult Ministries and was the recipient of the distinguished service award.
Mrs. Ealy served for several years as president of Busy Bee Inc., a volunteer organization in Waynesburg that provided affordable clothing to the needy.
She wasa member of Emerald Chapter No. 135, Order of the Eastern Star.
On November 27, 1947, she married Dale R. Ealy, who survives.
Also surviving are three sons, James D. Ealy of Washington, and John H. Ealy and Joseph E. Ealy, both of Waynesburg; two brothers, Victor Neatrour and William Neatrour, both of Bradford; and four grandchildren, Keith J. Ealy, Kevin D. Ealy, Nicole A. Ealy and Kristan Ealy. Deceased is one brother, Marlin Neatrour.
Mary E. Fleig

Mary E. McKelvey Fleig, 80, of Peters Township, died Saturday, July 4, 1998, at her home.
She was born November 20, 1917, in Pittsburgh, a daughter of Roger and Mary Kerns McKelvey.
Mrs. Fleig was a member of St. Benedict the Abbot Church.
Surviving are four sons, William A., Roger J., R. Matthew and David M. Fleig; five grandchildren, Meghan, Elisha, Christine, Brady and Nicholas Fleig; and several nieces and nephews.
Deceased are her husband, William H. Fleig; a sister, Ellen Zimsky; and two brothers, J. Roger and William McKelvey.
Vernon Gale Horn
Member of Fraternal Order of Eagles 1809
Vernon Gale Horn, 63, of Bentleyville, died Sunday, July 5, 1998, in his home.
He was born November 28, 1934, in Grand Chain, Ill., a son of Lee and Clara McGee Horn.
Mr. Horn was a retired cross-county truck driver and was a Baptist.
He was a member of Fraternal Order of Eagles 1809 Bentleyville, and member of REAC Group.
Mr. Horn attended high school in Illinois, and was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
On July 27, 1957, he married Lois Evon Horn who died October 2, 1993.
Surviving are two daughters, Deborah Sellers of Tarpon Springs, Fla., and Pamela Johnson of Bentleyville; a sister, Jane Bradley of Whittier, N.C.; three grandchildren, Timothy Horn, Jennifer and Jeremy Wiley; and one great-grandchild.
Deceased are a brother, Ben Horn; and a sister, Lana Bradley.
John William Hucik
Member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church
John William Hucik, 85, of Burgettstown, died Saturday, July 4, 1998, in his home.
He was born March 16, 1913, in Erie Mine, a son of Joseph and Marie Hucik.
Mr. Hucik was employed by J&L Steel in Aliquippa prior to his retirement.
He was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church in Burgettstown.
On July 18, 1938, he married Wanda Gariglio who survives.
Also surviving are two daughters, Betty Ann Arthrell of Flagler Beach, Fla., and Judy Hucik of Burgettstown; a sister, Veronica Moyer of Tampa, Fla.; two grandchildren, Bill Arthrell Jr. and Susan Marshall; and two great-grandchildren.
Deceased are four brothers, Joseph, Mike, Tom, and Martin Hucik; and two sisters, Ann Hucik and Mary Zajonc.
William Kirsopp
Mechanic at Mathies Coal was veteran of WW II
William Kirsopp, 81, of Finleyville, died Saturday, July 4, 1998, in Havencrest Nursing Center, Monongahela.
He was born October 19, 1916, in Pittsburgh, a son of Thomas and Mary Love Kirsopp.
Mr. Kirsopp formerly worked as a mechanic for Mathies Coal.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
Surviving are his wife, Anna Kleer Kirsopp; a son, John Kirsopp of Rankintown; two daughters, Gail Koch of Finleyville, and Joyce Kirsopp at home; and three grandchildren, Aaron Koch, Christina and Elizabeth Kirsopp.
Deceased is a son, William T. Kirsopp, who died July 19, 1992.
John Klimas

John A. "Bud" Klimas, 71, of McDonald, died Thursday, July 2, 1998, in Allegheny University Hospitals-Canonsburg.
Born August 6, 1926, he was a son of Anthony and Ellen Smith Klimas.
Mr. Klimas served in the Navy during World War II.
He worked for Consolidated Coal and Ben Construction.
Mr. Klimas was a member of St. Alphonsus Roman Catholic Church, United Mine Workers of America and the Laborers Union.
On September 13, 1937, he married Viola Lewis, who survives.
Also surviving are three sons, David A. Klimas of Upper St. Clair Township, Larry L. Klimas of Boardman, Ohio, and Kevin S. Klimas at home; five grandchildren; and one stepgreat-grandson.
Deceased are two sons, Dale A. Klimas and Brian K. Klimas.

Margaret Estella McElhany, 89, of Washington, died Friday, July 3, 1998, in Presbyterian Medical Center, Washington.
She was born December 13, 1908, a daughter of William Taylor and Margaret Lutz McElhany.
Miss McElhany was a member of Calvary United Presbyterian Church.
She was a retired housekeeper.
Surviving are two nephews, William Eugene McElhany of McDonald and George Edward McElhany of Nottingham Township.
Deceased is a brother, William Charles McElhany.
Frank D. Pianetti
Owned Monongahela City Taxi, retired from PennDOT
Frank Domenick Pianetti, 85, of Upper St. Clair, formerly of Monongahela, died Sunday, July 5, 1998, at Friendship Village Health Center of South Hills.
He was born October 4, 1912, in Monongahela, a son of Jack and Catherine Pesognelli Pianetti.
Mr. Pianetti spent most of his life on Third Avenue in Monongahela.
He was a former co-owner of the City Taxi in Monongahela. He retired from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, Washington County, as assistant superintendent of highways, and was the former city chairman of the Democratic party.
In the 1930s, he played semi-pro football with the Monongahela Mohawks and also served with Company A from Monongahela, during World War II.
Mr. Pianetti was a member of St. Anthony Church in Monongahela.
Surviving are his daughter, Geraldine Williams of Upper St. Clair; two grandchildren, Paul S. Williams and Nancy M. O'Brokta; and three great-grandchildren.
Deceased are his wife, Marie Francesca Dusi Pianetti, who died April 3, 1997; and a grandson, John C. Williams Jr.

Hal R. Stockdale, 76, a Greene County native, died Wednesday, July 1, 1998.
Mr. Stockdale was born October 2, 1921, a son of Layton and Molly Stockdale.
Surviving are his wife, Lillian G. Stockdale of Decatur, Ga.; one daughter, Deborah S. Peeples of Lawrenceville, Ga.; three sons, Douglas L. Stockdale of Marietta, Ga., Dennis H. Stockdale of Bamberg, S.C., and Darin F. Stockdale of Decatur; and four grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 6, in the chapel of A.S. Turner and Sons Funeral Home, Decatur, with the Rev. Ronald Hieber officiating. Interment will be in the Midway Presbyterian Churchyard.
Dean Lee Wahl
Associate professor at California University
Dean Lee Wahl, 55, of National Pike, Daisytown, died at 7:45 a.m. Friday, July 3, 1998, in Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh.
He was born February 5, 1943, in Butler County, a son of the late Purney Anderson and Llewellya Hazel Nolsheim Wahl.
Mr. Wahl was an associate professor at California University, where he taught reading and study skills and managed the tutorial program.
He was a graduate of Evans City High School, received a bachelor of science degree from Edinboro University, earned his master's degree from Slippery Rock University and did graduate work at Indiana University.
Mr. Wahl was a member of Nemacolin Country Club, Cedarbrook Golf League, Ellsworth Gun Club, Elks Lodge 776 of Washington, A.P.S.C.U.F. and Phi Delta Kappa Fraternity, for which he served as an adviser.
He enjoyed golf, fishing, hunting and playing cards.
On November 27, 1974, he married Lynda Brooks, who survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Todd Lee Wahl of Tampa, Fla., and Justin Lee Wahl at home; three sisters, Olive Sosnoski of Springdale, Fla., Donetta Landis of Sewickley and his twin sister, Deana Morgan of North Hills, Pittsburgh; two brothers, Purney Wahl of Evans City and Dale Wahl of Ligonier; and several nieces and nephews.
Robert P. Whitlatch
U. S. Navy veteran served during Vietnam era
Robert P. Whitlatch, 49, of West Finley R.D. 2, died at 11:55 a.m. Sunday, July 5, 1998, at Washington Hospital.
He was born September 25, 1948, in Waynesburg, a son of Thomas and Mary Rose Mayhle Whitlatch Sr. of Waynesburg R.D. 1.
Mr. Whitlatch resided in West Finley all his life and attended the Nebo Methodist Church.
He was formerly a self-employed painter, last employed by the Washington Hospital for 14 years in the maintenance department, retiring in December 1997, because of ill health.
Mr. Whitlatch was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving during the Vietnam era.
On September 2, 1971, he married Debra A. Chambers who survives.
Surviving in addition to his wife and parents are two sons, Daniel J. and Joshua "Chris" Whitlatch, both at home; two daughters, Michele D. Weight of Wind Ridge, and Teresa K. Whitlatch of Graysville; two grandchildren, Airin Robert and Levi Thomas Weight; three brothers, Charles E. Whitlatch of West Finley R.D. 2, Donald R. Whitlatch of Wind Ridge R.D. 1, and William H. Whitlatch of Sycamore R.D. 1; and a sister, Judith Higginbotham of Waynesburg R.D. 1.
Deceased are a brother, Thomas H. Whitlatch Jr., who died December 23, 1993; and a son, Terry Lee Whitlatch, who died in infancy.
Joseph J. Zibrida
Avid ham radio operator from Richeyville
Joseph J. Zibrida, 83, of Richeyville, died at 10:10 p.m. Friday, July 3, 1998, in Brownsville General Hospital.
He was born May 25, 1915, in Simpson, Westmoreland County, a son of John and Anna Franks Zibrida.
Mr. Zibrida was a member of St. Agnes Roman Catholic Church, Richeyville, where he was an usher.
He was a retired coal miner from Vesta 4 Mine in Richeyville and retired in 1972 as a steelworker from J&L Steel, Aliquippa.
He was a member of United Mine Workers of America and United Steelworkers of America and was a former fireman for Richeyville Volunteer Fire Department.
Mr. Zibrida was an avid ham radio operator (WA3DTG), had his advanced amateur radio license and was a member of the American Radio and Relay League.
On January 27, 1937, he married Sophia (Sue) Janisky, who died August 2, 1991.
Surviving are two sons, Edward (Eli) Zibrida of Richeyville and Richard J. Zibrida Sr. of Fredericktown; six grandchildren, Donna Belski, Cynthia, Richard J. Jr., Michael J. and Melissa S. Zibrida and Elizabeth Hosa; and five great-grandchildren.
Deceased is a brother, John Zibrida.
Louise Applegate

Louise Applegate, 85, of Washington, died Monday, July 6, 1998, at Manor Care Health Services, McMurray.
She was born on October 19, 1912, in Ellsworth, a daughter of William and Daisy Carney Kopp.
Mrs. Applegate was a member of Central Assembly of God Church, Houston, for more than 30 years, where she was active in Sunday school, Women's Ministry and the Abundant Life Group.
She worked at The George Washington in Washington for more than 20 years.
On July 1, 1928, she married George L. Applegate, who died on June 9, 1977.
Surviving are three sons, Jack Woods of Cincinnati, Ohio, George Applegate of Richmond, Ky., and David Applegate of Washington; two daughters, Judy Bilak of Follansbee, W.Va., and Lorene Mueller of Washington; one brother, Andrew Kopp of Florida; one sister, Jean DeMaranville of Bulger; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Deceased are one brother, Bill Kopp; and one sister, Emma Dotterer.
Charles W. Rodefer

Charles W. Rodefer, 74, of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, formerly of Waynesburg, died Friday, July 3, 1998, in Cuyahoga Falls.
He was born December 29, 1923, in Uniontown, a son of Mr. and Mrs. O.A. Rodefer.
Mr. Rodefer was a 1941 graduate of Waynesburg High School.
He graduated from Bethany College in West Virginia.
He was a schoolteacher and principal in Cuyahoga Falls prior to his retirement.
Surviving are his wife, Jan Rodefer; one daughter, Diane Doers of Franklin, Wisc.; two brothers, David Rodefer of Clark Summit and the Rev. William Rodefer of Indianapolis, Ind.
Deceased is one brother, James Rodefer.
Memorial services will be held in August in Cuyahoga Falls.

Melanie "Min" Budness, 83, of Clinton, died Sunday, July 5, 1998, in her daughter's home in Coconut Creek, Fla.
She was born May 22, 1915, in Sturgeon, a daughter of Armand and Ida Claus Verelst.
Mrs. Budness was a retired assistant manager for Kroger's supermarket in Mt. Lebanon, where she worked for 28 years. She retired in 1976.
She was a member of Clinton United Presbyterian Church.
In 1955, she married John Budness, who died in 1981.
Surviving are a son, Jules Favand of Oakdale; two daughters, Margaret Fentiman of Columbus, Ohio, and Jane Marvin of Coconut Creek; a brother, Octave Verelst of Frankfort Springs; two sisters, Marie Legrand and Eva Supinski, both of McDonald; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Deceased are a son, William A. Favand; and three brothers, John, Cornell and Herman Verelst.
William J. Condie
U.S. Navy veteran of World War II
William J. Condie, 73, of New Eagle, died Monday, July 6, 1998, at his home.
He was born February 14, 1925, in New Eagle, a son of Andrew J. and Margaretta Hillman Condie.
Mr. Condie was a member of Transfiguration Church in Monongahela; a member of the American Legion, James C. Ford Post 949 in Dunkirk; Monongahela Turners Club; and the U.S. Navy World War II Armed Guards of Pittsburgh.
He retired as an engineer with Conrail, Shire Oaks, with more than 40 years of service.
Mr. Condie was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.
Surviving are two daughters, Kathleen Herman of Monongahela and Teresa Simpson of Catlett, Va.; two sons, Patrick Condie of New Eagle and Paul Condie of Donora; seven grandchildren, Bryan, Julie and Kellie Condie, Jason and Jeffrey Herman, and Robert and Carly Mellinger; and two brothers, Jack Condie of Monongahela and Donald Condie of the state of California.
Deceased are his wife, Irene "Butch" Burkhart Condie, who died August 7, 1985; two brothers, Richard and Robert Condie; and two infant sisters, Shirley and Norma Condie.
Doris Elaine Ferro

Doris Elaine Ferro, 68, of Richeyville, died at 5:45 a.m. Tuesday, July 7, 1998, in Allegheny University - Canonsburg Hospital, after a lengthy illness.
She was born October 25, 1929, in California, a daughter of Desire and Josephine Van Varenberg Pichard.
Mrs. Ferro was a member of St. Agnes Roman Catholic Church of Richeyville, where she taught catechism for 10 years and was a member of the Ladies Guild of the church.
On June 26, 1948, she married John Ferro, with whom she celebrated 50 years of marriage, and who survives.
Also surviving are a son, John Michael Ferro, at home; three brothers, Raymond Pichard of Roscoe, Albert Pichard of Columbus, Ohio, and Roland Pichard of California; two sisters, Rose Marie Schoener of Greenacres, Wash., and Thelma Brozic of Painesville, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.
Deceased is a son, Anthony Desire Ferro, who died at birth.
James Charles Haines
U.S. Army veteran of Korea, Vietnam wars
Word has been received of the death of James Charles Haines, 66, of Summerville, S.C., and formerly of Washington, who died Friday, June 26, 1998, in his home.
He was born January 22, 1932, in Washington, a son of the late Alvin R. and Elsie Baker Haines.
Mr. Haines attended Washington schools and was a Baptist.
He was a retired U.S. Army chief warrant officer 4, serving during the Korean and Vietnam wars.
Mr. Haines was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Surviving are his wife, Thelma Robison Haines; three sons, Tommy R. Haines of Mass., David W. Donofrio of Pittsburgh, and Donald M. Donofrio of Summerville, S.C.; three daughters, Jimalea Bissette of Conn., Sallie A. Tusina of Manassas, Va., and Thelma J. Holcomb of Summerville; 16 grandchildren; three brothers, John Haines of McMurray, Robert Haines of Unity Township, Greensburg, and Richard Haines of Washington; an uncle, Carl Haines of Finleyville; three aunts, Ruth Bauer and Elsie Baker, both of Washington, and Sally Steele of Redondo Beach, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 10, in First Baptist Church, College and Wheeling streets, Washington, with the Rev. Edward Heist officiating. Burial will be Friday afternoon in Homewood Cemetery.

California woman was born in Canonsburg
Word has been received of the death of Marie Brehm Hott, 95, of Granada Hills, Calif., who died June 23, 1998.
She was born December 23, 1902, in Canonsburg, a daughter of Frank and Hannah Clark Brehm.
She was a member of St. John Baptist de la Salle Parish, Granada Hills.
Surviving are two brothers, Homer Brehm, with whom she made her home, and Robert Brehm of Zanesville, Ohio; three sisters, Jane Brehm and Ruth Blumer, both of Granada Hills, and Martha Lauze of Houston.
Deceased are her husband, John Hott; one daughter, Eileen; two brothers, John and Frank Brehm; and one sister, Cecelia Norris.
Burial was in San Fernando Cemetery, Calif.
Charles Jacobs
Retired as coal company research technician
Charles B. Jacobs Jr., 80, of 201 Demar Boulevard, Canonsburg, died Tuesday, July 7, 1998, in his home.
He was born May 9, 1918, in Pittsburgh, a son of Charles B. and Sara M. Lutz Jacobs.
Mr. Jacobs had lived in Canonsburg for the past 40 years, where he was a member of St. Patrick Roman Catholic Parish.
He served with the medical corps of the U.S. Army in World War II. Prior to his retirement, he was employed as a research technician with Consolidation Coal Co. in Library.
He was a member of American Legion Post 902 in Houston.
On October 8, 1942, he married Mary Ann Cripps, who survives.
Also surviving are one daughter, Marianne Jacobs of Washington; one brother, John D. Jacobs of Medford, Ore.; and several nieces and nephews.
William Kennedy
Former owner of Tri-Star Vending
William Howard Kennedy, 50, of Vankirk Road, Washington, died at 12:15 a.m. July 7, 1998, at his home.
He was born July 23, 1939, in Sewickley, a son of the late William W. and Clara Whiles Kennedy.
He formerly owned Tri-Star Vending Corp., Washington.
Mr. Kennedy served in the U.S. Army Reserves. He also bowled in several leagues at the Alpine Club in Washington, and enjoyed hunting and fishing.
On June 11, 1982, he married Georgia Ann Pitts Kennedy, who survives.
Also surviving are a son, William H. Kennedy Jr. of Lake Worth, Fla.; three daughters, Terrie Coyle of Coraopolis, Pamela Matthews of Mars and Kellie Lynn Kennedy of Washington; two sisters, Gloria and Beverly; and three grandchildren, Michael Coyle, Eddie Coyle and Andrew Matthews.
Deceased are two sisters, Dolores Podany and Loretta Mizic.

Miss Knestrick was Methodist.
She was employed as a production checker for Brockway Glass, formerly Hazel Atlas Glass Plant No. 1, retiring in 1969.
Surviving are her sister-in-law and caregiver, Pearl Wood Knestrick; two nieces, Patricia Eustis and Pamela S. Knestrick; and a great-niece and great-nephew.
Deceased are four brothers, David, Robert, Charles and William H. Knestrick Jr.; and a sister, Catherine L. Knestrick.

Sara E. "Bunnye" Rager, 74, of Waynesburg R.D.1, died Tuesday, July 7, 1998, at her home.
She was born January 19, 1924, in Nemacolin, a daughter of Thomas G. and Lena Conner Scott.
Mrs. Rager was a 1943 graduate of Waynesburg High School.
She was a homemaker and lived most of her life in Greene County.
Mrs. Rager was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Lippencott, where she was active in church affairs and served as president of the Calvary Missionary Society of the church, a member of the Morgan Township Farm Women and a past president of the Greene County PTA.
On November 20, 1943, she married Kenneth L. Rager, who died July 27, 1981.
Surviving are a son, Daniel L. Rager of Waynesburg, R.D.1; four daughters, Bonnie Garverick of Auburn, Ala., Connie Ross of Waynesburg, Claudia Waters of Charleston, S.C., and Myra Santucci of Mt. Morris; 14 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a sister, Madolyn Rush of Phoenix, Ariz.; and two brothers, John Scott of Las Vegas, Nev., and Gail Scott of Tempe, Ariz.

DeEtta Tennant, 71, of Prosperity R.D.2, died of an apparent heart attack at 5 p.m. Monday, July 6, 1998, in Greene County Memorial Hospital, Waynesburg.
She was born August 14, 1926, in Franklin Township, a daughter of Charlie and Estella Braden Tennant.
Miss Tennant was a homemaker and was affiliated with the Presbyterian Church.
Surviving are a son, Robert Tennant of Prosperity R.D.2; a brother, Donald Ray Tennant of Villa Park, Ill.; a sister, Donnis May Hupp of Addison, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was born March 6, 1933, in Tyler County, W.Va., a daughter of Emery and Gay Haught LaZear.
Mrs. Wilson was a member of Salem Church of Christ.
She and her husband were co-owners and operators of Town and Country Hardware in Salem.
On August 30, 1952, she married David L. Wilson, who survives.
Also surviving are three sons, David Emery Wilson of Vienna, Va., Timoth Lawrence Wilson and Christopher A. Wilson, both of Clarksburg, W.Va.; two daughters, Susan Gacek of Waynesburg, and Carolyn Carlson of Lancaster; three sisters, Kathryn Watkins of Dearborn, Mich., Ruth VanCamp of Middlebourne, W.Va., and Mary Pethal of Mannington, W.Va.; and seven grandchildren.
Following cremation, a memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, July 12, at Greathouse Funeral Home, Salem, W.Va.

Longtime secretary for Duquesne Light
Geraldine L. Allison, 77, of McDonald, died Wednesday, July 8, 1998, in her home.
She was born June 26, 1921, a daughter of Charles Victor and Anna Russell Cochran Allison.
Miss Allison was employed for 43 years as a secretary for Duquesne Light, retiring in May 1984.
She was a 1939 graduate of McDonald High School and worked as a volunteer for McDonald Meals On Wheels.
She was a member of Calvary Presbyterian Church, McDonald, where she served as deacon and Stephen minister and was a past treasurer.
Surviving are a niece, Carol L. Berthold of McDonald; and a nephew, Carl A. Lohman of Portersville.
Deceased is a sister, Marguerite Lohman, who died in 1986.
John R. Balog
Canonsburg steelworker was Marine veteran of WWII
John R. Balog, 78, of 121 Dundee Drive, Canonsburg, died Wednesday, July 8, 1998, in Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh.
He was born June 12, 1920, in Canonsburg, a son of Andrew and Mary Simon Balog.
Mr. Balog was a lifelong resident of the Canonsburg area and a member of St. Patrick Parish.
Prior to his retirement, he was employed by United States Steel as a steelworker.
Mr. Balog served with the U.S. Marines during World War II in the Pacific Theater and Panama.
Surviving are a brother, Julius Balog of Canonsburg; two sisters, Catherine Tonsetic of Chartiers Township and Irene Cadez of Strabane; and several nieces and nephews.
Deceased are five sisters, Mary Kernich, Elizabeth Milik, Pearl Topping, Rosetta Noon and Anna V. Balog; and a brother, Elmer Balog.

Chief engineer for Federal Screw Works
E. Cameron Burns, 98, of Washington, formerly of Chelsea, Mich., died Wednesday, July 8, 1998, in Washington Hospital following a brief illness.
Mr. Burns was born February 14, 1900, in Ann Arbor, Mich., a son of Cameron Clarke Burns and Catherine Hertz.
He was employed for 40 years as chief engineer for Federal Screw Works in Chelsea, Mich. He graduated from high school in Michigan and was a graduate of the University of Michigan, with degrees in naval architecture and marine engineering.
On September 4, 1942, he married Rosalie E. Stammler Burns, who survives.
Deceased is an infant son, Steven Cameron Burns.
Services are private at the family's request. Interment will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, Chelsea, Mich.

Mine worker was active in church and school boards
Harry L. Crable, 96, of Bialko's Rest Home, Waynesburg, formerly of Mather, died Wednesday, July 8, 1998, in Greene County Memorial Hospital, Waynesburg.
Mr. Crable was born December 24, 1901, in Redstone Township, Fayette County, a son of Thomas N. and Minnie Crawford Crable.
He was a longtime member, elder and former chairman of the church board at Mather Christian Church.
A retired coal miner, he was a foreman at Mather Colleries. He was a member and secretary of United Mine Workers of America Local 6151.
He had served as a member of Morgan Township School Board and Jefferson-Morgan School Board.
Surviving are a son, William H. Crable of Mather; four grandchildren, Cathie Wilson of Vienna, Va., Beth Ann Jenner of Arlington, Va., and Scott and Thomas Crable, both of Columbus, Ohio; and several great-grandchildren.
Deceased are two sons, Thomas Crable, who died in infancy, and Harry L. Crable Jr.; and several brothers and sisters.
Services and interment will be private. Arrangements are under the direction of Behm Funeral Home Inc., Greene Street, Jefferson.

She was born May 4, 1915, in Marion County, W.Va., a daughter of George C. and Reatha Greathouse Hibbs.
Mrs. Dowdle was a 1933 graduate of Washington High School and retired as a secretary for Washington Hospital after many years of service.
She attended Christian Missionary Alliance Church of Washington.
On October 30, 1948, she married Edward R. Dowdle, who died August 7, 1975.
Surviving are a niece and several cousins.
Deceased is a brother, Victor, who died in infancy.

A retired secretary, Mrs. Gnora worked for Ringgold School District.
She was a member of Calvary United Presbyterian Church, Donora, and a 1946 graduate of Donora High School.
Surviving are two daughters, Joyce E. Poklemba of Odessa, Fla., and Suzanne Miller of Donora; a son, George Gnora of Donora; and six grandchildren, Jeremy and Cameron Poklemba, and Carrie, Kelly, Will and Eric Miller.
Deceased are her husband, George Gnora, who died in 1985; two brothers, Hugh and George "Hoot" Ririe; and a sister, Sara Herrmann.
Arthur Leo Hartzell

Arthur Leo Hartzell, 91, of Massillon, Ohio, formerly of Dunn Station and Rawson Drive, Washington, died at 11:15 a.m. Wednesday, July 8, 1998, in Meadow Winds Nursing Home, Massillon, following an eight-year illness.
He was born March 11, 1907, in Waynesburg, a son of Sheridan and Essie Bungard Hartzell.
Mr. Hartzell was a high school graduate and had been employed by Century Concrete and Judson Wiley as a truck driver prior to his retirement.
On May 4, 1929, he married Daisy Maine Hartzell, who died June 2, 1984.
Surviving are two sons, Roy Hartzell and Arthur L. Hartzell Jr., both of Tampa, Fla.; four daughters, Josephine Lamp of Navarre, Ohio, Patricia Mohr of Columbus, Ohio, Mona Staley of Massillon, Ohio, with whom he resided for five years, and Karen McDaniels of Redding, Calif.; 22 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.
Deceased is a son, John Lee Hartzell.
Phyllis B. Landau

Phyllis B. Landau, 67, of East Beau Street, Washington, died Tuesday, July 7, 1998, in Washington Hospital.
Mrs. Landau was born March 11, 1931, in Bronx, N.Y., a daughter of Morris and Sadie Gammerman Goldstein.
She was a member of Beth Israel Sisterhood of Washington.
Mrs. Landau graduated from William Howard Taft High School, Bronx, N.Y., from New York Institute of Technology and from Community College of Allegheny County.
As a hobby, she enjoyed working with stained glass. She also enjoyed making pottery and hooking rugs.
On September 7, 1957, in New York, N.Y., she married Jack Landau, who survives.
Also surviving are three sons, Kenneth Landau of Haslitt, Mich., Michael Landau of Sydney, Australia, and Brian Landau of Seattle, Wash.; two daughters, Marian Landau of Pittsburgh and Ellen Landau of Niwot, Colo.; and one brother, William Goldstein of Queens, N.Y.

Nellie Mae Mack, 92, formerly of 850 Beech Street, Washington, died Tuesday, July 7, 1998, in Presbyterian Medical Center, Washington, after a brief illness.
She was born June 25, 1906, in Washington, a daughter of Richard and Anna Mae Patterson Thomas.
Mrs. Mack was a homemaker and was a member of the Negro Women's Federation, the Rosebud Art and Literary Club and Eva Brooks Missionary Society.
She was a member of St. Paul A.M.E. Church, where she was a member of the stewardess board and the gospel choir and a former Sunday school teacher.
On October 31, 1923, she married Robert Mack, who died March 18, 1973.
Surviving are a son, Leonard G. Mack of Washington; three brothers, Archie and Warren Thomas, both of Washington, and Sell Thomas of Waldorf, Md.; a sister, Alleen Ferrell of Washington; five grandchildren, Stacy Vactor, Robert G. and Lenane Mack, Sonja Wilson and Cynthia R. Taylor; eight great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was born March 21, 1930, in Washington, a son of Samuel and Caroline Haut Mosier.
Mr. Mosier attended Trinity School and was a steelworker for J&L Steel Co. in Aliquippa.
In 1958, in Washington, he married Mary Kulla, who died in 1964.
Surviving are a brother, William Mosier of Washington; a sister, Rose Landock of Washington; and several nieces and nephews.

David Jacob Zelt, 84, of Dayton, Ohio, formerly of 1098 Gabby Avenue, Washington, died at 5:05 p.m. Wednesday, July 8, 1998, in Hospice of Dayton after a long illness.
He was born November 6, 1913, in Washington, a son of Thomas Albert and Jennie Lee Moore Zelt.
Mr. Zelt was a 1933 graduate of Trinity High School and served as an accountant with Brockway Glass Co. for 42 years until retiring in 1976.
He was a charter member of Church of the Covenant United Presbyterian Church of Washington and formerly served as deacon, elder and Sunday school teacher.
He was a member of Masonic Lodge 164 of Washington and Tall Cedars of Lebanon. He served as an Eagle Scout leader with Boy Scouts of America and helped organize North Franklin Township Volunteer Fire Department.
On August 12, 1940, he married Frances Dunning, who died February 14, 1989.
Surviving are a daughter, Pamela Zelt Matzko of Oakwood, Ohio; a sister, Joanna McCullough of Fairmont, W.Va.; a grandson, David Michael Matzko; and several nieces and nephews.
Deceased is a sister, Miriam Carter.
