Mary Reno, 81, of Midway, formerly of Michigan, died Tuesday, November 17, 1998, in Allegheny University Hospitals, Canonsburg. She was born December 25, 1916, in Michigan, a daughter of Salvatore and Rosalie Evola. A homemaker, Mrs. Reno was a member of the McDonald and Midway senior citizens, and St. Ann Roman Catholic Church of Bulger. Her husband, Bernard "Benie" Reno, is deceased. Surviving are a daughter, Rose Marie Laplante of Michigan; two sons, Salvatore Reno of Midway and Benie Reno of Michigan; three sisters, Elizabeth Pugno, Josephine Evola and Frances Vanscoy, all of Michigan; four grandchildren, Samuel, Mark, Gule and Mike; and six great-grandchildren. Three brothers and one sister are deceased.

Frank C. Snak
Retired Sturgeon postmaster
Frank C. "Red" Snak, 61, of Sturgeon, died Wednesday, November 18, 1998, in Washington County Health Center. He was born November 27, 1936, in Pittsburgh, and was raised by his grandfather, Frank Snak. Mr. Snak served in the U.S. Army and worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 26 years, retiring in 1992, at which time he was Sturgeon's postmaster. He was a former member of Presto and Sturgeon Volunteer Fire Department and a member of McDonald American Legion and Sturgeon Belgian Club. On December 7, 1956, he married Mary J. Soisson, who died March 1, 1996. Surviving are two sons, Frank A. Snak of Bridgeville and David M. Snak of Sturgeon; a daughter, Mary K. DeVitis of Canonsburg; three grandchildren, Antonio J. and Elizabeth DeVitis and Jesse Nicholas Snak.

Ora L. Adamson
Mather Collieries retiree
Ora L. Adamson, 90, of Cameron Star Route, Waynesburg, died Saturday, October 31, 1998, in Greene County Memorial Hospital, Waynesburg. He was born May 17, 1908, in Waynesburg, a son of Henry and Daisy Bell Adamson. He had formerly lived in Craynes Run, Washington Township, and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Lippencott. Mr. Adamson was a retired coal miner from Mather Collieries, Mather, and a member of United Mine Workers of America. On July 12, 1930, he married Flossie J. Acklin, who died November 24, 1992. Surviving are a son, Jack L. Adamson of Cameron Star Route, Waynesburg; eight grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; a sister, Nell Beck of Waynesburg; and a brother, James Adamson of Windham, Ohio. Deceased are a son, John Samuel Adamson; and three brothers, Joseph, Robert and Henry Adamson.

Lottie Brown, 84, of Mather, died Saturday, October 31, 1998, in Rolling Meadows Nursing Home, Waynesburg. She was born August 14, 1914, in Lily, a daughter of Antonio and Mary Abramczyk Petros. Mrs. Brown was a homemaker and had lived in Mather since 1983. She was a member of Rolling Meadows Church of God in Waynesburg. Surviving are a son, Russell E. Brown Jr. of Cleveland, Ohio; a daughter, Charlotte Carlo of Staten Island, N.Y.; four grandchildren, Sharon Christopher, Gail Stanz, Charlene Dertinger and Joshua Carlo; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Wanda Petrick of Ravenna, Ohio, and Blanche Petros of Mather; and three brothers, Joseph Petros of Clarksville R.D. 1, John Petros of Easton, Kan., and Thomas Petros of Warren, Ohio. Deceased are her husband, Russell E. Brown, who died in 1986; four brothers, Stanley, Chester, Edward and Walter Petros.

Ronald D. Chuba, 61, of Southview Road, McDonald, formerly of Washington, D.C., died Saturday, October 31, 1998, in his home. He was born August 31, 1937, in Canonsburg, a son of the late William Chuba and Mary Ray Grcich of Hickory. He was a graduate of Canonsburg High School and Duquesne University. Mr. Chuba had been employed as an accountant for the federal program of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). He served in the U.S. Army. Surviving are three brothers, William Chuba of Canonsburg, Richard Chuba of Whittier, Calif., and John Michael Grcich of Hickory; a sister, Joyce Phenicie of Hickory; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, November 2, in the Hickory United Presbyterian Church, Hickory.

Helen P. Donley
Former Washington woman was homemaker
Helen P. Donley, 82, of Fairmont, W.Va., formerly of Washington, died Saturday, October 31, 1998, at her home. She was born May 14, 1916, in Washington, a daughter of Roy V. and Golden Goodwin Porter. Mrs. Donley was a homemaker. Surviving are her husband, Clarence A. Donley; two sons, David P. Donley of Fairmont and James E. Donley of Hampton, Va.; a daughter, Patti Jo Hall of Joppa, Md.; and nine grandchildren. A son, Robert W. Donley, died in 1988.

Lillian R. Dunlop
Retired McDonald Elementary School teacher
Lillian R. Dunlop, 86, of Midway, died Friday, October 30, 1998, in Allegheny University Hospitals-Canonsburg. She was born April 20, 1912, in Allen Township, Washington County, a daughter of John L. and Elizabeth Jack Dunlop. She was a member of Center United Presbyterian Church in Midway and was a retired school teacher from McDonald Elementary School. Surviving are three nieces, Jean Bish of Midway, Linda Davidson and Wilma Nagy, both of McDonald; three great-nephews; a great-niece; and four great-great-nieces and nephews.

Richard C. Hogan
Horse trainer and driver champion
Richard C. (Dick) Hogan, of Pompano Beach, Fla., and Canonsburg, died at 2:45 p.m. Friday, October 30, 1998, in Cleveland Clinic Hospital, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., following a sudden illness. He was born December 9, 1930, in Wolfe Island, Ontario, Canada, a son of Frank and Nina Murphy Hogan. He lived most of his life in the Canonsburg and Pompano Beach areas, where he was a member of both the St. Patrick and St. Henry Roman Catholic churches. Mr. Hogan was the owner/operator of Dick Hogan Racing and Training Stable for 35 years. Among other achievements, he was the 1968 driver champion at Meadows Racetrack. He was a member of the Florida Standardbred Breeders and Owners Association, the U.S. Trotting Association and Harness Horsemen International. He served with the Merchant Marines. On October 10, 1971, he married Yvonne Mary D'Orazio, who survives. Also surviving are a son, Anthony Richard Hogan of Pompano Beach, Fla.; two brothers; three sisters; and several nieces and nephews.

Irene Kovach
Former Dilliner woman was seamstress
Irene Kovach, 79, of Pittsburgh, formerly of Dilliner, died Saturday, October 31, 1998, in Forbes Regional Hospital, Pittsburgh. She was born March 29, 1919, in Alicia, a daughter of Charles and Kathryn Gall Kovach. She was Roman Catholic and had been formerly employed as a seamstress for the Pittsburgh Rehabilitation Center for 27 years. Surviving are a brother, William Kovach of Dilliner; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are three brothers, Charles, Mike and Emery Kovach.

Mary K. Leitner, 79, of Armour Street, Richeyville, died at 12:35 a.m. Saturday, October 31, 1998, in Presbyterian Medical Center, Washington. She was born September 22, 1919, in Taylor, Old Forge, a daughter of Michael and Julia Resetar Kepich. Mrs. Leitner was a member of St. Agnes Roman Catholic Church in Richeyville. Surviving are four daughters, Bonnie J. Zuro and Mary Lou Leitner, both of Alexandria, Va., Adele Messer of Oakdale and Lori Brooks of Ellwood City; a sister, Irene Marshall of Fredericktown; a brother, Joseph Kepich of Richeyville; six grandchildren, Kelly and John Zuro, Sheri and Lora Messer and David and Eric Brooks; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are her husband, Frank Leitner; and three brothers, John, Mike and Steve Kepich.

Domenick J. Monaco

Domenick J. Monaco, 87, of Cecil, died Saturday, October 31, 1998, in his home. He was born December 6, 1910, in Cecil, a son of Panflio and Flaminia Pronio Monaco. He was a lifelong resident of Cecil, where he was a member of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, and a charter member of the Cecil Volunteer Fire Department, Company 3. Mr. Monaco was a retired coal miner and had worked for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. Mr. Monaco and his wife owned and operated Monaco Florist and Greenhouse until 1972. On December 21, 1933, he married Mae Monaco, who survives. Also surviving are three daughters, Eileen E. Bradley of North Versailles, Dolores J. Schweitzer and Diana M. Stromple, both of Cecil; a son, Domenick Monaco of Sitka, Alaska; eight grandchildren, Sandra Carlin, Donald, Michael and Kimberly Schweitzer, Kelley Crisanti, Diana Boehme, Craig and Christopher Monaco; two sisters, Lola Ventresca and Anna Powner, both of Cecil; two brothers, Joseph Monaco of San Jose, Calif., and Anthony Monaco of Cecil; six great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Clarksville man enjoyed trout fishing
Andrew Thomas "Spoon" Nestor Jr., 61, of Clarksville (Chartiers Bottom), died Sunday, November 1, 1998, in Greene County Memorial Hospital, Waynesburg. He was born Mary 31, 1937, in Chartiers, a son of the late Andrew T. and Anna Andrusky Nestor. He was employed as a highway construction worker for Golden Eagle Construction Co. of Uniontown. Mr. Nestor served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War. He was an avid fisherman, who especially enjoyed trout fishing. He also enjoyed polka music. Surviving are his wife of 32 years, Patricia L. Porter Nestor; a daughter, Andrea Carol Henneman of Dallas, Texas; a stepdaughter, Jean Marie Graves of Columbia, Md.; a grandson, Rece Andrew Henneman; a brother, John Jento of Clarksville; and a sister, Patricia Pataski of Clarksville. A sister, Mary Ann Baresich, is deceased.

Charles Osoba
WWII vet, retired from Beth Energy Mine No. 60
Charles Osoba, 74, of Eighty Four, North Bethlehem Township, died Saturday, October 31, 1998, in Manor Care Health Services, McMurray. He was born September 19, 1924, in McRoberts, Ky., a son of Frank Osoba Sr. and Josephine Paslawski Osoba. He attended Ellsworth High School. In 1985, he retired from Beth Energy Mine No. 60, Somerset Township, where he had worked as a motorman. Mr. Osoba was a veteran of World War II, who served with the U.S. Army and received the Purple Heart. On June 10, 1963, in Bay Shore, Long Island, he married Doris Cunnius, who survives. Also surviving are a son, Arthur Brown of Venetia; three brothers, Edward Osoba of Livonia, Mich., Rudy Osoba of Pearl, Texas, and George Osoba of St. Clair Shores, Mich.; three sisters, Rose Kusman of Ellsworth, Helen Frost of St. Clair Shores, and Josephine Couwlier of Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich.; three grandchildren, Jack, Jason and Erica Brown; and several nieces and nephews. Mary Ann Hamilton Roth, 44, of Avella, died Saturday, October 31, 1998, in her home following a lengthy illness. She was born April 15, 1954, in Augsburg, Germany, a daughter of the late Alfred and Mary Ann Hren Hamilton. Mrs. Roth was a 1973 graduate of Avella High School. She had lived most of her life in Avella, where she bowled in a Tuesday Night Ladies League. On November 6, 1976, she married Paul S. Roth, who survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Tina Marie Roth of Avella and Aubrey Roth of Washington; a son, Paul John Roth of the U.S. Naval Base, Everett, Wash.; three sisters, Linda Jackson of Follansbee, W.Va., Patty Gubanish of Washington and Lois Harris of Avella; and three brothers, David Hamilton of the state of California, Alfred C. Hamilton Jr. of Colliers, W.Va., and William Bruce Hamilton of Wellsburg, W.Va.

Earl Franklin Beisner, 59, of Valley View Addition, Wheeling, W.Va., died Thursday, November 19, 1998, at his home. He was born in Wheeling, W.Va., a son of James and Leona Way Beisner. Mr. Beisner was a member of West Alexander Christian Church, and was a coal miner for Shoemaker mine in Wheeling. Surviving are his wife, Linda Lou White Beisner; two sons, Everett "Buddy" Beisner and Rich Beisner, both of Wheeling; a daughter, Lisa Kavanas of Wheeling; a brother, Richard of Homeland, Calif.; a sister, Flo Behrens of Wheeling; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are a sister, Kathrine "Mitzie" Lyons; and a half sister, Ruth Webb.

Margaret Ann Foley

Margaret Ann Foley, 81, of 245 Glenn Avenue, Canonsburg, died at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, November 18, 1998, in South Hills Health and Rehabilitation Center, Canonsburg. She was born August 7, 1917, in Canonsburg, a daughter of William and Henrietta Bennett Mawhinney. Mrs. Foley was a member of St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church in Canonsburg. She was a lifelong resident of Canonsburg. Mrs. Foley's hobby was flower gardening. On November 3, 1944, in Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church, Coronada, Calif., she married Henry "Red" Foley, who survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Mary Ellen Foley, at home, and Ruth Ann Cameron of Highland Park, Texas; a sister, Betty Jane Gregg of state of California; a grandson, Scott Allen; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Deceased are two brothers, George "Tud" and Charles Mawhinney; seven sisters, Helen Adams, Catherine Alderson, Henrietta Dietz, Laura Gray, Virginia Gregg, Alice Roach and Ruth Rudge.

Ada M. Heil, 79, of Manor Care Nursing Home, McMurray, formerly of Center Church Road, McMurray, died Thursday, November 19, 1998, in the nursing home. She was born November 2, 1919, in Canonsburg, a daughter of William B. and Mary M. Rennie Thomas. Mrs. Heil was a member of St. Benedict the Abbott Church in McMurray. On February 17, 1942, she married Robert J. Heil, who died July 17, 1993. Surviving are two sons, James R. Heil of Boiling Springs, S.C., and Carl J. Heil of Sturgeon; a daughter, Roberta Patnesky of Allison Park; seven grandchildren; and two brothers, William J. Thomas of St. Petersburg, Fla., and George J. Thomas of Eighty Four.

Edna Horkey
Sunday school teacher and spiritual counselor
Edna Horkey, 80, of Tamarack, died Thursday, November 19, 1998, in Bucktail Medical Center, South Renovo. She was born March 10, 1918, in German Township, Fayette County, the daughter of William and Madonna McCann Langenheim. Mrs. Horkey, who was raised in Carmichaels, was a member of Faith City Church in Newark, Del., and graduated from nurses training in Philadelphia. She was a Sunday school teacher, Bible teacher and spiritual counselor, visiting hospital patients and shut-ins. She enjoyed cooking, gardening and swinging on her porch swing. On January 25, 1937, in Morgantown, W.Va., she married Albert Michael Horkey, who died September 9, 1975. Surviving are four sons, Albert Duane Horkey of Whitman, Mass., Kenneth G. "Zeke" Horkey of Cross Fork, Wallace E. Horkey of High Point, N.C., and Ronald K. Horkey of Elkton, Md.; a daughter, Karen Elaine Pulanco of Waldorf, Md.; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. An aunt, Catherian McMinn, lives in Carmichaels.

John A. Kupets
California Area High School teacher, principal
John A. Kupets, 71, of Republic, died Thursday, November 19, 1998, in his home. He was born December 15, 1926, a son of John and Mary Karpus Kupets. Mr. Kupets was a member of Holy Rosary Roman Catholic Church and the Holy Name Society in Republic. He was a 1945 graduate of Redstone Township High School, received a bachelor of science degree in administration from Waynesburg College, and a masters of education degree from the University of Pittsburgh. Mr. Kupets retired from California Area High School, where he worked for more than 33 years. He served as high school teacher, business manager, secretary of the school board, maintenance supervisor, principal and acting superintendent. He received a certificate from Fayette County Civil Defense School. He was veteran of the U.S. Army, serving as sergeant first class and chief supply specialist in World War II and the Korean War. Mr. Kupets had served as football, basketball and baseball coach for schools and organizations and in 1975, he took California Area High School Baseball Team to the W.P.I.A.L. He was past president of St. George Jr. Tamboritizans Parent Organization. He served as notary public, Redstone Township auditor, past secretary of Republic Volunteer Fire Department, a longtime member of Pennsylvania State Education Association, and treasurer of the cafeteria fund at California Area High School. Mr. Kupets was a fourth degree member of Knights of Columbus, Uniontown Council, a member Jednota Lodge of Republic and the Eagles Club of Connellsville. He also was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 47 of Uniontown, Hopwood and AMVETS Post 103. He was a member of Phi Sigma fraternity and Delta Pi Epsilon Honorary Business Fraternity. For the past ten years, he had served as president of Fayette County Baseball League. On June 6, 1953, he married Martha Ann Skowronek, who survives. Also surviving are two sons, John "Dan" Kupets of Uniontown and Mark Kupets of Gaithersburg, Md.; six daughters, Rosemary Hogan of Merrittstown, Janine Holbrook of Alexandria, Va., Martha West of Roanoke, Va., Rita Kelly of Gaithersburg, Md., Trudy Bennett of Bloomsburg and Kristen Luna of Arlington, Va.; 20 grandchildren, John Casey, Katie, Kara, Mark Justin, Ashley, Courtney and Christopher Kupets, Jenna Houston, James and Joshua Hogan, John Wesley Holbrook, Johnathan, Mary Katherine, and Martha Claire West, Matthew and Lindsey Kelly and Alessandro, Kylan, and Marissa Luna; two brothers, James Kupets of Rolla, Mo., and George Kupets Fallstown, Md. Deceased are a granddaughter, Constance Kelly; four brothers, Edward, Joseph, William and Charles Kupets; and a sister, Anne Mihok.

Doris Jean Paquet
Played for Jessop dartball team for 25 years
Doris Jean Conn Paquet, 67, of Oakland Avenue, Washington, died at 3 p.m. Thursday, November 19, 1998, in Washington Hospital following a lengthy illness. She was born August 16, 1931, in Oakdale, a daughter of Carl Raymond and Susan Rachel Nelson Conn. Mrs. Paquet was a member of Noblestown Methodist Church. She had been employed as an aide at Hazelday Personal Care Home in Washington, Pine Lawn Nursing Home in Houston and Cartwright's Nursing Home. Mrs. Paquet played for the Jessop dartball team No. 1 for 25 years. On August 4, 1948, she married James Paquet Sr. who died June 10, 1980. Surviving are three sons, James Jr., Raymond Lee and Richard Allen Paquet, all of Washington; four daughters, Sylvia Jean Paquet of San Antonio, Texas, Mary Ann Poland of Duquesne, Brenda Sue Terry of Washington and Ruth Fay Bolen of Washington; two sisters, Sarah Ann Broad of Washington and Mary Eileen Collins of Swissvale; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Deceased is a brother, William N. Conn.

Eileen Reed

Eileen Noble Reed of Upper St. Clair died Thursday, November 19, 1998. She was born in Camden, N. J., was raised in Washington and had resided in Upper St. Clair for the past 36 years. Mrs. Reed was a 1950 graduate of Washington High School. She was a volunteer at St. Clair Hospital and was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, where she had been a deacon. Surviving are two daughters, Coleen and Lisa; a son, James; two sisters, Jean and Barbara; and two grandsons, James and Christopher; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased is her husband, James A. Reed.

Sam A. Ritacco
Retired business owner formerly of Donora
Sam A. Ritacco, 77, a retired business owner of Cleveland, Ohio, died November 11, 1998, in St. Augustine Manor, Cleveland. He was born March 4, 1921, in Donora, and lived in Mentor-on-the-Lake, Eastlake and Madison Township, Ohio, before moving to Cleveland three years ago. A veteran of the U.S. Army, Mr. Ritacco was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and Immaculate Conception Church in Madison. Mr. Ritacco retired as parts manager of Lake County Garage in 1984, after five years of service. He previously owned and operated the former Lakeshore Auto Parts in Mentor. Surviving are a daughter, Pat Ritacco of Cleveland; a son, Tony Ritacco of Lakewood; three grandchildren, Samantha, Patty and Joseph Ritacco; a brother, Emil Ritacco of Donora; and two sisters, Edith Paradise of Donora and Florence Ritacco of Donora. His wife, Evelyn, and three brothers, Leo, Adolph and Joe Ritacco, are deceased.

Alexander Sakach
U.S. Army veteran of World War II
Alexander Sakach, 79, of National Pike, West Pike Run Township, Daisytown, died at 2 p.m. Thursday, November 19, 1998, in Franciscan at St. Leonard Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Centerville, Ohio. He was born March 26, 1919, in Daisytown, a son of Frank and Esther Hajdu Sakach Sr. Mr. Sakach was a member of Daisytown United Presbyterian Church. He was a retired miner, a member of Jones and Laughlin Steel Corp., and a member of United Mine Workers of America Local 762. He was a U. S. Army veteran of World War II, serving with the 147th infantry from 1942 to 1945. Mr. Sakach was a member of Hancock-McCune-Horne American Legion Post 705 of Centerville and was a member of the Hungarian Club of Daisytown. On October 21, 1950, he married, Helen Bodnar, who died November 8, 1988. Surviving are two sons, Ronald Sakach of Richmond, Va., and Brian Sakach of Centerville, Ohio; four grandchildren, Thomas, Matthew, Brandon and Briana Sakach; five brothers, Frank Sakach Jr. of California, John Sakach of Daisytown, Joseph Sakach of Twinsburg, Ohio, Julius Sakach of Amherst, Ohio, and Albert Sakach of Pittsburgh; and many nieces and nephews.

Janice Ruth LaVelle

Janice Ruth LaVelle, 73, of Washington, died at 1:45 p.m. Friday, November 20, 1998, in Humbert Lane Health Care Center, Washington, following an 18-month illness. She was born August 28, 1925, in Washington, a daughter of John and Icia Hillberry Hammett. Mrs. LaVelle was a member of Friendship Community Church During World War II, she was employed by Dravo Corp. and later was employed by Tygart Valley Glass Co. She was involved with the mallwalkers at Franklin Mall. On October 7, 1950, she married Raymond Wilbert LaVelle, who died January 5, 1992. Surviving are two sons, Richard R. LaVelle of Washington and Gary Martin LaVelle of Savage, Md.; a brother, LeRoy Hammett of Amity; and a sister, Norma Carroll of Ninevah. Deceased are two sisters, Leilla Cox and Jean Davis; and two brothers, John and Robert Hammett.

Steve Plauchak, 80, of Hazelkirk (Monongahela), died Friday, November 20, 1998, in Monongahela Valley Hospital. He was born March 3, 1918, in Clairton, a son of John and Mary Stem Plavchak. Mr. Plauchak lived in Hazelkirk for 10 years and formerly resided in West Elizabeth for many years. He was a member of St. Macrina Byzantine Catholic Church of Monongahela and was a former member of Ascension of Our Lord Byzantine Catholic Church of Clairton. Mr. Plauchak was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II and was retired from U.S. Steel Clairton Works, with 45 years of service. Surviving is his wife, Ann Lasovinsky Plauchak, with whom he celebrated 53 years of marriage Nov. 3, 1998. Also surviving are three daughters, Patricia Potemra of Carroll Township, Lillian Telega of Van Voorhis and Nancy Popich of Hazelkirk; two sons, Michael and Daniel Plauchak, both of Van Voorhis; two sisters, Margaret Zaken of Elizabeth and Irene Hefner of McKeesport; six grandchildren, Tracy Hudak, Jacquelyn, Alicia, Stephanie and Dana Telega and Andrew Popich III; and two great-grandchildren. Deceased are three brothers, Edward, John and George Plavchak.

Ronald D. "Buck" Riggs, 67, of Star Route, Holbrook (Nettle Hill), died unexpectedly at 9:30 p.m. Thursday, November 19, 1998, in his home. He was born October 14, 1931, in Springhill Township, a son of Leslie Clarence and Mabel Ruby DeGarmo Riggs, and had been a resident of Greene County most of his life. Mr. Riggs was a former member of Mt. Carmel Church of God and James Farrell American Legion Post 330 of Waynesburg and a life member of Disabled American Veterans Post 123 of Waynesburg. He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving as a private with the U.S. Marine Corps in the 1st Battalion, 5th Marine, 1st Marine Division. Mr. Riggs was a former foreman at V-Bat Plastic in Washington and a former employee of Washington Mold Co. He had also worked as an auto mechanic and for several years prior to his retirement in 1993 was a self-employed carpenter. For the past 16 years, he shared a home with Betty Lou Gaines Moore. Surviving are three sons, Michael Claude of Claysville and Ricky and Leslie Riggs of Fort Knox, Ky.; three daughters, Ruby Rooker of Grand Rapids, Mich., Rhonda Knapp of Fort Knox and Stacey Kennedy of Bentleyville; two brothers, Robert Riggs of Tampa, Fla., and Harold Riggs of Washington; five sisters, Phyllis Morgan, Lois Barker and Marlene Kaske, all of Seattle, Wash., Donna Moore of Sanford, Fla., and Catherine Staggers of Prosperity; four stepchildren, Roger L. Moore at home, Ronald L. Moore of Westover, W.Va., Rosalee Moore of Rogersville and Dixie Berdine of LaCrosse, Wisc.; several grandchildren; and one step-granddaughter. Mrs. Salsberry was a member of Fairhill Manor Christian Church, Washington She formerly owned and operated Beau Street Tavern, and for 17 years was employed at Maxwell House. On July 3, 1976, she married Robert L. Salsberry, who died February 22, 1988. Surviving are a stepdaughter, Patricia L. Burchett of Washington; three step-grandchildren, Nica and Hilary Burchett and Leland Burchett Jr.; a step-great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews. Catherine Brincko, 75, of Meadow Lands, died Wednesday, November 18, 1998, in West Penn Hospital, Pittsburgh. She was born December 7, 1922, in Meadow Lands, a daughter of John and Mary Jarosik Brincko. She lived most of her life in Meadow Lands and was a member of St. Michael Byzantine Catholic Church, Canonsburg. Surviving are three sisters, Ann Brincko and Mary Kifer, both of Washington, and Margaret Luketich of Canonsburg; a brother, Stephen Brincko of Meadow Lands; and several nieces and nephews. Carolyn F. Charnesky of Washington died Sunday, November 22, 1998, in Washington Hospital. She was born October 12, 1917, in Washington, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Tutay. Mrs. Charnesky was a member of Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church. She attended Washington schools and had been employed by Washington Laundry and Snowy White Laundry. Mrs. Charnesky enjoyed dancing and bingo. In November 1938, she married Robert S. Charnesky, who died in May 1991. Surviving are a son, Chester Charnesky of Washington; a brother, Edward Tutay of Washington; three sisters, Dolores Koshen of Canonsburg, Helen Campbell of Washington and Violet Shepard; seven grandchildren, Cynthia Hunter, Charles T. Herman G. Cratty, 81, of Garards Fort (Headlee Heights), died at 4:35 a.m. Saturday, November 21, 1998, at his home. He was born July 28, 1917, in Lock Four, a son of Andrew Jackson and Cecelia O. Weber Cratty. Mr. Cratty served as a deacon of First Baptist Church of Greensboro and resided in Headlee Heights since 1959. In his early life, he worked on various river boats on the Monongahela River, including the steam sternwheeler, The Homestead. He also did construction work at various locations. He had worked at the filtering plant of U.S. Steel Robena Mine. Later, he worked in barge handling and retired as a barge loader from the Robena Mine in 1979. Mr. Cratty was a member of United Mine Workers of America Robena Local 6321, and he was known locally for his work as a professional Santa Claus for 27 years. On September 4, 1948, he married Janet L. Wheeler, who survives. Also surviving are a son, Kelly T. Cratty of Clarksville; two daughters, Sally Gail Crouser of Charleston, W.Va., and Jill Pekar of Dilliner R.D.1; seven grandchildren, Kristi and Jessica Pekar, Wesley and Julie Crouser and Christopher, Eileen and Hayley Cratty; a sister, Margaret C. She was born April 13, 1915, in Brave, W.Va., a daughter of Elza and Bertha Jones Kennedy. Mrs. Duvall was a homemaker and a board member at Short Creek Methodist Church. She also was a member of the Joy Circle and a member and former women's representative of Ohio County Farm Bureau. Surviving are a son, William R. James Richard Faust, 62, of Roswell, N.M., formerly of Dilliner R.D.1 (Taylortown), died Tuesday, November 17, 1998, at the home of his daughter in Dilliner. He was born April 26, 1936, in Clarksburg, W.Va., a son of the late James Hurbert and Hazel Neva Bullman Faust. He was a 1955 graduate of Morgantown (W.Va.) High School and attended West Virginia University in Morgantown. Mr. Faust was a member of Taylortown United Methodist Church, served in the U.S. Army and was a retired insurance adjuster, licensed in West Virginia and New Mexico. He was active in his community. He served as a board member of Greensboro Community Clinic, was past president of the Southwestern Greene PTA, was a Greensboro Little League/Senior League Baseball coach and was active on the Boy Scout council. He was a member of the Morgantown Jaycees, Bobtown Volunteer Fire Department, Dunkard Valley Lodge IOOF 1180, Audubon Society, Roswell Hiking Club, Roswell FOE and West Virginia Claims Association. Surviving are his wife of 40 years, Marjorie Jaretta Griffin Faust, whom he married September 13, 1958; three children, Cynthia Hunnell of Dilliner, J. Christian Faust of Front Royal, Va., and Fredrick Faust of Clearville; two grandchildren, Brian Allen and Melissa Noelle Faust; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are D.M. and Lelia Loudin, who were instrumental in raising him.

Nicholas Fedorchak
Former pastor of St. Mary Orthodox Church
The Very Rev. Nicholas Fedorchak, 82, of Mt. Lebanon, formerly of Monongahela, died Sunday, November 22, 1998, in St. Clair Memorial Hospital, Pittsburgh. He was born June 21, 1916, in Jermyn, Lackawana County, a son of Teddy and Julia Chawinsky Fedorchak. The Very Rev. Fedorchak graduated in 1946 from St. Tikhon's Theological Seminary, South Canaan. He was ordained as deacon September 8, 1946, and as priest September 15, 1946, in Protection of the Holy Virgin Cathedral in New York City, N.Y. His first and only parish assignment was to St. Mary Orthodox Church in Monongahela, in the Archdiocese of Pittsburgh and West Virginia, Orthodox Church in America. He retired as pastor of St. Mary after 51 years. The Very Rev. Fedorchak served as dean of the Monongahela clergy for many years and served for a time as the spiritual director of the Federated Russian Orthodox Clubs. The elevations bestowed upon him included the pectoral-jeweled cross and Archpriest. The Very Rev. Fedorchak had an extraordinarily long and distinguished pastorship. Upon his 50th anniversary in the priesthood, St. Mary Church issued a proclamation called him "a spiritual leader of great courage, faith and foresight ... The Very Rev. Fedorchak has administered untiring and unselfishly to the spiritual and physical needs of St. Mary's parishioners." On July 13, 1946, he married Helen Jubinsky, who survives. Also surviving are a son, Dr. Rodney Fedorchak of Mt. Lebanon; a daughter, Claudia Bazil of Crestwood, N.Y.; five grandchildren, Alexis, Stephanie and Nicholas Fedorchak, and Drew and Justin Bazil; four sisters, Mary Kohler and Tillie Seyka, both of Clifton, N.J., Anna Tapyrik of Pittsburgh and Irene Kiehart of Jermyn; and three brothers, Peter and Joseph Fedorchak, both of Long Island, N.Y., and Walter Fedorchak of Endicott, N.Y.

He retired after 54 years as a glass worker and had been a supervisor at the former Duncan Miller Glass Co., Washington. He later worked for the Tiffin and Viking glass companies. Mr. Jones enjoyed woodworking and fishing. On May 11, 1940, he married Marry Briggs, who survives. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews. Grace E. Moore, 85, of Washington, died Friday, November 20, 1998, in Washington Hospital. She was born January 4, 1913, in Florence, a daughter of Thomas and Nettie Johnston McCullough. Mrs. Moore was a member of Church of the Covenant, Washington. She was a graduate of Holiday's Cove High School in Weirton, W.Va., and a graduate of West Liberty (W.Va.) College. Following graduation, she taught in the Weirton schools. Later in life, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Moore was an avid golfer and past president of Women's Golf Association at Nemacolin Country Club. On May 16, 1936, in Steubenville, Ohio, she married Clarence L. "Buck" Moore, who died February 23, 1995. Surviving are two sons, Thomas L. Moore of Claysville and Jerry D. Moore of Glendale, Ariz.; two daughters, Patricia Hoch of Rochester, N.Y., and Candace Cary of Valrico, Fla.; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased is a sister, Anna McCullough.

Jenna Mae Mulholland, 88, of Carmichaels, died at 2:52 a.m. Saturday, November 21, 1998. She was born July 2, 1910, in Jeannette, a daughter of Edward J. and Pearl Fleeger Dugan. Mrs. Mulholland was a graduate of Butler High School. She founded and operated Butler Beauty School and, with her husband, owned Clinton Hotel in Butler from 1950 to 1972. She had formerly resided in Butler and Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. She was a member of St. Paul Roman Catholic Church in Butler and St. Pius Roman Catholic Church in Ft. Lauderdale. Mrs. Mulholland was a member of St. Hugh Roman Catholic Church in Carmichaels, where she had been a member of the Altar Rosary Society. On June 18, 1936, she married John A. Mulholland, who died December 13, 1970. Surviving are a son, Michael Mulholland of Carmichaels; three grandchildren, Lynette E. Hunnell, Michael Mulholland Jr. and Kathleen Powers; and eight great-grandchildren. Gordon William Richmond, 84, formerly of Ford Street, Washington, died at 8:40 p.m. Saturday, November 21, 1998, in Allegheny University Hospitals-Canonsburg, following a five-year illness. He was born January 23, 1914, in Washington, a son of Wiley and Henrietta Closser Richmond. He was a member of Fairhill Manor Christian Church, Washington. Prior to his retirement, Mr. Richmond was employed at McGraw-Edison for 23 years. He was a former member of Edwin Scott Linton American Legion Post 175 and the Pulaski Club. He attended Washington High School and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. On October 26, 1945, he married Corilla Munchie, who died August 25, 1993. Surviving are three daughters, Phyllis Phillips of Avella, and Henrietta Mull and Pam Colbert, both of Washington; two brothers, Harold and Everett Richmond, both of Washington; eight grandchildren, Scott, Donald and Jason Rice, Lori Emph, Kristie Lynn and Jerry Mull, Carie Cimino and Kellie Ciletti; and five great-grandchildren. Kenneth J. Spina, 57, of Canonsburg, died unexpectedly at 12:59 a.m. Sunday, November 22, 1998, in Allegheny University Hospitals-Canonsburg. He was born November 16, 1941, in Midland, Chartiers Township, a son of the late William Spina and Sophie Keranko Spina of Houston. Mr. Spina lived most of his life in the Canonsburg-Houston area, where he was a member of St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church. He was a 1958 graduate of Chartiers-Houston High School. He was employed as a production-inventory control supervisor for Cooper Industries in Canonsburg until its closing. He also had worked as a part-time deliveryman for L&M Flower Shop. Mr. Spina served as secretary for PNA (White Eagles) Lodge 1746 of Canonsburg and as secretary of the Men's Bowling League. He was a social member of American Legion Post 992 of Houston, Houston Independent Club and Sons of Italy Lodge. He had served in the U.S. Army. Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his wife, Judith Regelman Spina, whom he married July 1, 1967; and two daughters, Christina Spina of Pittsburgh and Lisa Spina Fountain of Charlottesville, Va.

Dr. Edwin D. Stacher, 79, of 15 East Katherine Avenue, Washington, died Thursday, November 19, 1998. He was born June 22, 1919, in Washington, a son of Stanley and Audria Hall Stacher. Dr. Stacher was a graduate of Washington High School, Waynesburg College and Universal College of Chiropractic of Pittsburgh, now affiliated with Palmer in Davenport, Iowa. He lived all of his life in Washington, where he practiced chiropractic for 45 years. He was a member of Fairhill Manor Christian Church and the Sons of the American Revolution. Surviving are his wife, June Booth Stacher, whom he married in 1942; two sons, Dr. Eric D. Stacher of Waynesburg and Dr. Kim A. Stacher of Washington; four grandchildren, Joshua, MaChal, Alexa and Logan Stacher; and a niece and a nephew. A brother, Robert Stacher, is deceased. Nicole (Nikki) Lyron Vladich, 14, of Slovan, died Friday, November 20, 1998, in Weirton (W.Va.) Medical Center from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. She was born April 17, 1984, in Washington, a daughter of Eric Vladich and Frances Matijevich Vladich, both of Slovan. She was a member of the freshman class of Burgettstown Area High School, where she was a member of the Drama Club. She also participated in basketball and softball and had been a Burgettstown Lions cheerleader for five years. She also was a member of the Our Lady of Lourdes Church Youth Group. Surviving, in addition to her parents, are her twin brother, Eric Lee Vladich II, at home; a sister, Brianna Vladich, at home; her maternal grandparents, Dan and Margaret Matijevich of Burgettstown; her paternal grandparents, Joseph and Helen Vladich of Slovan; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Mildred M. Blaker, 93, of Mt. Morris R.D.1, died at 6:50 a.m. Monday, November 23, 1998, at home, following a brief illness. She was born July 13, 1905, in Brock, a daughter of Francis Marion and Elizabeth Fox Wade. Mrs. Blaker lived her entire life in Greene County and was a graduate of Clay-Battelle High School. She was a member of Valley Chapel United Methodist Church, where for many years she served as pianist and taught junior Sunday school class. For 18 1/2 years, she worked at Mt. Morris Post Office, retiring in 1975. On February 21, 1923, she married Willis G. Blaker Sr., who died January 21, 1979. Surviving are a son, Willis G. "Jerry" Blaker Jr. of Mt. Morris R.D.1; two grandchildren, Pamela Sue Blaker and Willis G. "Jay" Blaker III; and several nieces and nephews. She was the last of her immediate family. Robert T. Dillon Sr., 75, of McDonald, died Sunday, November 22, 1998, in Ohio Valley Hospital, McKees Rocks. He was born August 20, 1923, in McDonald, a son of Edmond and Alice Pierrard Dillon. Mr. Dillon was a 1942 graduate of McDonald High School and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He was a dispatcher for the state Department of Transportation for 25, retiring in 1985. He worked for the Pittsburgh Coal Co. and was a part-time McDonald policeman in the 1950s. Mr. Dillon was past president of McDonald Volunteer Fire Department, a member of the Democratic Party and American Legion Post 485 of McDonald. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, and as a hobby raised canaries and parakeets. On October 5, 1944, he married Jean Hayes, who survives. Also surviving are a son, Robert T. Dillon Jr. of Oakdale; a daughter, Sherry L. Dillon of McDonald; and a grandson, Joshua D. Dillon. Deceased are a brother, Edmond Dillon; and a sister, Lucy Felton.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the South Pacific. Mr. Hyslop retired from U.S. Steel Corp., Irwin Works, with 31 years of service. He formerly was employed by Mississippi Glass Co. in Floreffe. Surviving is his wife, Ina Chestnut Hyslop, with whom he celebrated 50 years of marriage on October 9, 1998. Also surviving are four sons William G. of New Eagle, Robert H. of Dravosburg, Brian R. of Allison Park and Duncan B. Hyslop of Carroll Township; a daughter, Mary Beth Morris of Warrenton, Va.; a sister, Agnes Stump of Finleyville; and eight grandchildren, Tracy, Lauren, Meagan, Tory, Dan and Jonathan Hyslop and Kristen and Ashley Morris. Deceased are four brothers, John, George, Malcolm and Robert Hyslop; and two sisters, Elizabeth Reinhardt and Mary Urquhardt.

Winona K. Strickler
WVU grad was teacher
Winona K. Strickler, 86, of Jefferson R.D.1, died Monday, November 23, 1998, in Greene County Memorial Hospital, Waynesburg. Mrs. Strickler was born June 19, 1912, in Daybrook, W.Va., a daughter of Thomas B. and Mary E. Headley Keck. She had formerly lived in Hyattsville, Md., and had moved back to Jefferson in 1971. Mrs. Strickler graduated from West Virginia University in 1933 and was an elementary school teacher in Morgantown, W.Va., and Hyattsville area schools. She was a member of the National Education Association and the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witness in Carmichaels. Mrs. Strickler was married to Wilbur G. Strickler, who died August 15, 1977. Surviving are two daughters, Lois John of Rivesville, W.Va., and Mary Butler of Salisbury, Md.; three sons, Wilbur R. Strickler of Salisbury, Paul T. Strickler of St. Johns, Mich., and Dorsey N. Strickler of Hyattsville; 12 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a sister, Darlie Ruth Wilkins of Pacific Palisades, Calif. A sister, Arlice V. Keck, is deceased.

John Bolosky, 80, of Cokeburg, died Tuesday, November 23, 1998, at his home. He was born August 13, 1918, in Youngstown, Ohio. Mr. Bolosky was a retired from Bethlehem Mines Corp., Ellsworth and Cokeburg mines and was a member of United Mine Workers Association Local 1197. Surviving are his wife, Thelma Dranzo; a son, Herbert Bolosky of West Alexander; a sister, Alice Richardson of Red Bluff, Calif.; and a grandson, Eric Bolosky.

Delores H. Klein, 69, of Venetia, died Tuesday, November 24, 1998, in her home. She was born February 6, 1929, in Fairmont, W.Va., a daughter of William and Evelyn Hinerman. On February 1, 1950, in Franklin, Ind., she married Robert M. Klein, who died October 10, 1996. Surviving are a son, Robert M. Klein Jr. of Venetia; four daughters, Debby Klein of Greenland, N.H., Patty Griswold of Venetia, Kitty Labossier of Canonsburg, and Linda West of Chicago, Ill.; a brother, Don Hinerman of Bethel Park; a sister, Florence Blocker of Fairmont, W.Va.; eight grandchildren, Sara Jane Thomas, Jessica Lynn Miller, Jennifer Leigh Farrar, Bill and Nicki Griswold, Steve and Rob LaBossier and Kinsey Klein. Hayward Y. Kirk Sr., 94, of 1876 West 48th Street, Cleveland, Ohio, formerly of Denbo Heights, died Tuesday, November 24, 1998, in Franklin Plaza Nursing Home, Cleveland. He was born January 27, 1904, in Harrison County, Philippi, W.Va., a son of Julius and Margaret Shaffer Kirk. Mr. Kirk was retired miner of former Moffit Mine, Daisytown, and retired from American Brake and Shoe Co. in Cleveland. Surviving are a daughter, Gertrude Majors of Cleveland; a son, Hayward Y. Kirk Jr. of Cleveland; a sister, Myrtle McManus of Marianna; 10 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are his wife, Emma Staley, who died January 19, 1985; a daughter, Garnet E. Sawka, who died October 5, 1986; three sisters, Ethel Lake, Minnie Ankney and Dovie Staley; and a brother, Alfred R. Kirk. Funeral arrangements are incomplete. Thomas R. Knowlson Jr., 77, of McMurray, died Tuesday, November 24, 1998, in Mercy Hospital, Pittsburgh. He was born July 27, 1921, in Pittsburgh, a son of Thomas R. and Jean Hill Knowlson. Mr. Knowlson was a member of Peters Creek United Presbyterian Church. He was a 1939 graduate of Mt. Lebanon High School. Mr. Knowlson was a World War II veteran, serving as staff sergeant with the U.S. Marine Corps, and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 764 of McMurray. He was a retired self-employed carpenter who was associated with several contractors in the construction of homes in the South Hills area. Mr. Knowlson enjoyed hunting and gardening and was an acclaimed pigeon flyer and a member of the Washington Pigeon Club. Surviving are his wife, Joanne Twigg; three sons, Thomas R. Knowlson III of South Park Township, Richard F. Knowlson of New Mexico, and Peter B. Knowlson of Columbia, S.C.; a daughter, Nancy Knowlson Thorne of Greensburg; six grandchildren, Eric, Kelsey, Michael, Caitlin, Ellen and Heidi Rose; Deceased is a brother, Alan McElheny.

Genevieve E. Morris, of Cokeburg, died Monday, November 23, 1998, in her home. She was a daughter of Vincent and Victoria Makuta Staschiak. Mrs. Morris was employed by Washington County Tax Assessment Office, retiring in 1986. She was a former member of St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church in Cokeburg. Surviving are a son, Michael V. Morris of Washington; a daughter, Karlene Petrisek of Bentleyville; a sister, Nellie Madera of Scenery Hill; and two grandsons, Michael D. and Brian E. Morris. Deceased are her husband, Michael Morris, who died February 4, 1980; and two brothers, Frank and John Staschiak.

Randolph Metz
Retired U.S. Army sergeant
Randolph "Randy" Metz, 76, formerly of Eighty Four and Bentleyville, died Sunday, November 22, 1998, in King Medical Center, Washington, D.C. He was born December 31, 1921, in Metz, W.Va., a son of Arthur G. and Jessie Brock Metz. Mr. Metz retired in 1964, from the U.S. Army as a sergeant first class after 24 years of service. He survived the battle of Pearl Harbor. He was a member of Lake Alfred Lions Club, Lake Alfred, Fla. Surviving are a son, Robert Metz of Georgetown; four daughters, Merry Metz of Alexandria, Jean Marie Hagerman, of McSherrytown, Patricia Wade of Easley, S.C., and Victoria King of Pompano Beach, Fla.; a sister, Marjorie Burgan of Charleroi; a brother, Charles Metz of Bentleyville; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Deceased are a daughter, Christy Metz, who died in 1972; and two brothers, Kenneth, who died in 1976, and Eugene "Jack" Metz, who died in 1990.

Walter R. Novak
Past president of Cecil No. 2 fire company
Walter R. "Waxie" Novak, 56, of 103 Locust Street, Muse, died unexpectedly of an apparent heart attack while bear hunting in McKeen County on Monday, November 23, 1998. He was born May 19, 1942, in Canonsburg, a son of the late Walter A. Novak, who died May 20, 1998, and Camille Buquet Novak of Muse, who survives. Mr. Novak was a lifelong resident of Muse, where he was a member and past president of the Cecil No. 2 (Muse) Volunteer Fire Department. He was vice president at the time of his death. He was a member of Washington County Firemen's Association and was the elected constable for Cecil Township and a member of Muse Presbyterian Church. He graduated from Canon-McMillan High School, Class of 1960, and was employed by Joy Mining and Machinery of Meadow Lands as a supervisor. Mr. Novak served with the U.S. Navy for four years during the Vietnam War. He was a member of the Cecil American Legion post and the Bulger Veterans of Foreign Wars. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. Mr. Novak was a member of Safari Club International, Dormont-Mt. Lebanon Sportsman's Club, where he served on the board of directors; Claysville Sportsmen's Club and the National Rifle Association, where he was an instructor. He also was a hunting safety course instructor for the state Game Commission. Mr. Novak had made three hunting trips to Africa, where he bagged several exotic animals. On April 20, 1963, he married Betty Cumer Novak, who survives. Also surviving, in addition to his mother, are a daughter, Tracy Chabalie of Muse; a sister, Beverly Barolo of Upper St. Clair; a grandson, James Walter; and several nieces and nephews.

Wayne Penvose, 56, of Wheeling, W.Va., formerly of Bellaire, Ohio, died Tuesday, November 24, 1998. He was born May 8, 1942, in Canonsburg, a son of the late Raymond H. Penvose and Ruth E. Miller Penvose of Houston. Mr. Penvose was employed by Ogden Newspapers Inc. in Wheeling. He was a member of the Italian-American Club of Bellaire, and a councilman at large in Bellaire. Surviving are his wife, Bonnie Rushman; a son, Thomas Ryan of Wheeling; a daughter, Eva Marie Penvose of Sewickley; three brothers, Raymond Penvose of Greensboro, N.C., Clarence Penvose of Washington and Robert P. Penvose Sr. of Houston; four sisters, Marjorie Reynolds of Vandergrift, Edith Jane Dubois and Mildred Orbin, both of Houston, and Linda LaRosa of Philadelphia. Deceased are a daughter, Benia Penvose; a son, Raymond Penvose; and two brothers, Norman and Kenneth Penvose.

Lawrence W. Roberts
U.S. Army veteran of World War II
Lawrence W. "Jake" Roberts, 75, of 104 East High Street, Waynesburg, died at 4:30 a.m. Tuesday, November 24, 1998, in Greene County Memorial Hospital, Waynesburg, following a lengthy illness. He was born October 14, 1923, in Pine Bank, a son of Blaine and Sarah Cole Roberts. Mr. Roberts spent most of his life in Greene County and Beaver. He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the 82nd Airborne of the U.S. Army. Mr. Roberts worked from 1950 to 1987 as a group leader for Curtis Wright, which later became Westinghouse Corp. He recently joined Landmark Baptist Church in Waynesburg and was a member of Waynesburg Moose Lodge 461. Surviving are a sister, Sylvia Kent of Beaver; five brothers, Lloyd Roberts of Carmichaels, Robert B. Roberts of Florence, John F., Roy Allen and Blaine Roberts Jr., all of Beaver; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are two sisters, Evelyn Houser and Ruth Ann Masters; and three brothers, Ewing, Donavon and John S. Roberts.

Frances Podboy Tomsic
First woman tax collector in Washington County
Frances Podboy Tomsic, 91, of Canonsburg, died at 12:15 a.m. Tuesday, November 24, 1998, in Allegheny University Hospitals-Canonsburg. Born February 6, 1907, in Strabane, she was a daughter of John and Mary Riska Podboy. Mrs. Tomsic lived her entire life in the Canonsburg and Strabane areas and had been a teller and bookkeeper at Slovenian Savings and Loan Association in Strabane. She also was elected the first woman tax collector in Washington County, serving in North Strabane Township. Mrs. Tomsic was a member of St. Patrick Roman Catholic Parish, Canonsburg, and the women's auxiliary of AUH-Canonsburg. She had attended Alexander School, formerly in Strabane, Linden High School, and Duff's Business College. She was on the honor roll committee for the World War II Veterans Memorial, Strabane; a member of the Slovenian Women's Union Branch 71; and was secretary of SNPJ Lodge 589, which then merged with SNPJ Lodge 138 of Strabane. In 1958, she married James J. Tomsic, who died June 14, 1980. Surviving are a sister, Dorothy Vercek of Canonsburg; four brothers, August Podboy of Canonsburg, Paul Podboy of Strabane, Carl Podboy of Strabane and James Podboy of Canonsburg; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are a sister, Mary Chesnic; and three brothers, Frank and John Podboy and Joseph Podboy, who died in infancy.

Edyth T. Upson
Former secretary of Medical Society
Edyth T. Upson, 87, of Washington, and formerly of Amity, died Tuesday, November 24, 1998, in Humbert Lane Health Care Center, Washington. She was born December 4, 1910, in Amity, a daughter of Walter and Margaret McAfee Tucker. Mrs. Upson was a member of Amity United Methodist Church, where she was the organist and choir director for 25 years. She graduated from Trinity High School in 1929, and also from Penn Commercial College. She was the executive secretary of the Washington County Medical Society from 1962 until 1979. On August 16, 1943, in Pittsburgh, she married Arthur C. Upson, who died September 13, 1952. Surviving are a son, Thomas T. Upson of Harrisburg; a daughter, Judith Ross of Washington; two sisters, Beatrice Garner of Amity and Eunice Shrontz of Prosperity; five grandchildren, Bethany Burchill, and Jeremy, Ross, Lisa and Jeffrey Upson; one great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are a brother, Edwin Tucker; and two sisters who died in infancy.

Kenneth E. Conaway

Kenneth E. Conaway, 51, of West Newton, formerly of Richeyville, died Friday, November 27, 1998, at home. He was born July 15, 1947, in Richeyville, a son of Harold D. Sr. and Alice H. Vavrick Conaway. Mr. Conaway was Catholic. For the last 29 years, he was employed by Westinghouse at the Waltz Mill site in Madison. Surviving are his wife, Milly Vukovich Conaway; a daughter, Nannette Conway of Hutchinson; two sons, Kenneth J. Conaway of Tarentum and Jeremy N. Conaway of Greensburg; three grandchildren, Ryan, Spencer and Shannelle Conway; two brothers, Harold J. Conaway of Richeyville and Ronald L. Conaway of Allison Park; and a sister, Irene Lutes of Richeyville. Deceased is a brother, William L. Conaway. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced at a later date.

William F. Clineman, 77, of Fallowfield Township, died Thursday, November 26, 1998, in Monongahela Valley Hospital, Carroll Township. He was born July 11, 1921, in New York, a son of William F. and Anna Clineman. Mr. Clineman formerly owned and operated Clineman's Restaurant and Tasty Freeze in Fallowfield Township. Surviving are a son, William H. Clineman of Fallowfield Township; three grandchildren, William R. and Kimberly L. Clineman and Christine D. Bruce; and four great-grandchildren. Decease are his wife, Gladys Miller Clineman, who died March 28, 1977; and a sister.

Don E. Cowell
Decorated WWII veteran was Brock farmer
Don E. Cowell, 85, of Spraggs R.D.1, died at 12:12 a.m. Thursday, November 26, 1998, in Smithley Personal Care, Mt. Morris. He was born June 11, 1913, in Spraggs, a son of Clyde and Cora Kiger Cowell. Mr. Cowell was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, where he saw action in the Battle of the Bulge, receiving a Purple Heart, Bronze Service Star, Combat Infantry Badge and Good Conduct Ribbon. He owned and operated a farm in Brock, worked for Allegheny Power and for four years worked for Perry Township. He was Methodist. On October 29, 1971, he married Jackie L. Cowell, who survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Kimberly Batcho Degler of Purseglove, W.Va., and Judy Phillips of Waynesburg; two grandchildren, James Batcho and Corey Degler; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are a son, James Batcho; and three brothers, Carl, Raymond and Earl Cowell; and two nieces and a nephew. He was the last of his immediate family.

Susan Fereza
Member of Ave Maria Church of Bentleyville
Susan Fereza, 78, of Ontario Village, Eighty Four R.D.2, died Friday, November 27, 1998, in Vencor Hospital, Pittsburgh. Born May 16, 1920, in Branchdale, she was a daughter of Steve and Mary Vianansky Meszaros. Mrs. Fereza was a member of Ave Maria Roman Catholic Church of Bentleyville and had been a resident of the Scenery Hill and Eighty Four areas all of her life. Her husband, Frank "Francis" Fereza, died in 1979. Surviving are a son, Frank R. Fereza of Eighty Four; a daughter, Betty Stickel of Monongahela; a brother, John Meszaros of Cokeburg; four grandchildren, Thomas J. Stickel, Michelle Fereza, Frank R. Fereza Jr. and Eric Fereza; and one great-grandson. A sister, Mary Meszaros, is deceased.

Claysville resident was lifelong farmer
Edward Fullum, 77, of Claysville, died at 10:30 a.m. Friday, November 27, 1998, in Wightman Health Center, Squirrel Hill, Pittsburgh. He was born April 20, 1921, in Washington, a son of Albert and Ann Fullum. Mr. Fullum was a farmer all his life. Deceased are two sisters and two brothers. He was the last of his immediate family. Private services will be held Saturday, November 28, with interment in West Middletown Cemetery.

Eva Garstecki, 75, of Daisytown, California Borough, died at 11:15 a.m. Friday, November 27, 1998, in Brownsville General Hospital. She was born December 5, 1922, in Mt. Pleasant, a daughter of Peter T. and Helen Sloninsky Garstecki. Miss Garstecki was a member of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Daisytown, She retired from RCA Corp. and TACTEC of Meadow Lands. Surviving are three sisters, Emma Novak and Stella Parise, both of Pittsburgh, and Florence Ventura of Cleveland, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are two brothers, Paul A. and Peter Edward Garstecki.

Mary L. Hepe
Active in Girl Scouting
Mary L. Hepe, 77, of Butler, formerly of McDonald, died at 9:35 a.m. Wednesday, Novmeber 25, 1998, at her residence. Born June 26, 1921, in Indianapolis, Ind., she was a daugher of Glenn Lape of Sarasota, Fla., and the late Cecil Rodgers Lape. Mrs. Hepe was a homemaker and member of Faith United Presbyterian Church of Butler. She was a former neighborhood chairman of the Girl Scouts of America in McDonald; and was past president of the women's auxiliary of the Tanglewood Senior Center in Butler. Surviving are her husband, Ed Hepe, whom she married June 12, 1942; two daughters, Carolyn L. Hendrix of Torrance, Calif., and Nancy L. Daller of Murrysville; and five grandchildren. Burial will be held Saturday, November 28, in Greenlawn Burial Estates, Butler. Joan M. Letrick, 63, of Fredericktown, died unexpectedly at 8:22 p.m. Thursday, November 26, 1998, in the Brownsville General Hospital emergency room. She was born May 26, 1935, in Fredericktown, a daughter of Nellie Biondi Scatena of Fredericktown and the late Joseph Scatena, who died June 13, 1973. Mrs. Letrick was a member of the Christian Assembly of God Church, Bentleyville, where she was active in the women's ministry. She was a 1953 graduate of East Bethlehem Township High School and a 1974 graduate of California University of Pennsylvania. Mrs. Letrick taught in Beth-Center School District since 1974, where she was a former sponsor of the student council, a member of the Student Assistant Team, served as a class sponsor and was a member of PTA. She belonged to the Pennsylvania State Education Association and National Education Association. Surviving are her husband of 41 years, Carl R. Letrick; two daughters, Leann Marcolini of Fredericktown and Amy Jo Meckley of Richeyville; three grandchildren, Justin and Brittany Marcolini and Taylor Meckley; a sister, Beverly Morgan of Chicago, Ill.; a brother, Robert Scatena of Elizabethville; and several nieces and nephews.

Ralph S. Palmer, 72, of Avella, died Thursday, November 26, 1998, at his daughter's home in Burgettstown. He was born February 6, 1926, in Wellsburg, W.Va., a son of Wellington E. and Vannie Eden Palmer. Mr. Palmer was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the European Theater with Company C, 35th Tank Battalion, 4th Armored Division. He was a retired brick mason and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4496 in Wellsburg. Mr. Palmer was active in Avella Little League programs. Surviving are his wife, Dorothy J. Gore Palmer; two sons, Walter L. and Ralph W. Palmer, both of Avella; five daughters, Connie Somplatsky of Burgettstown, Linda M. Walter F. Rahner, 87, of Burgettstown, died Friday, November 27, 1998, in Valley Haven Nursing Home, Beach Bottom, W.Va. He was born September 14, 1911, in Carnegie, a son of Herman and Mary Keil Rahner. Prior to retirement, Mr. Rahner, an auto mechanic, owned and operated the Noblestown Road Garage in Carnegie. Surviving are a daughter, Phyllis Jeffreys of Colliers, W.Va.; and five grandchildren. Deceased are his wife, Lillian Mae Saix Rahner; five brothers and two sisters.

Daunice L. Ramage
Nursing assistant served on Donegal elections board
Daunice L. Clutter Ramage, 76, of Claysville (Donegal Township), died at 12:05 a.m. Friday, November 27, 1998, in the Greenery Rehabilitation Center, Canonsburg. She was born March 10, 1922, in West Finley, a daughter of Thomas C. and Nannie Simpson Clutter. Mrs. Ramage was a member of Claysville Christian Church. She attended Burnsville Grade School and Claysville High School. She was employed for 24 years as a nursing assistant at Presbyterian Nursing Homes, Washington, retiring in 1994. Mrs. Ramage was a member of Washington County Horse and Mule Association, where she served as secretary, the State Line Saddle Club, where she served as secretary, and was a charter member of the Draft Horse and Mule Association. She served on the Donegal Township District 2 elections board for more than 30 years, including several years as a judge of elections. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, playing bingo, collecting cookbooks and visiting with Amish friends in Ohio. On June 27, 1939, in Winchester, Va., she married Frank L. Ramage, who survives and with whom she celebrated 59 years of marriage. Also surviving are four daughters, Mary Kathryn Hrobak of Warren, Ohio, Phyllis R. Ryburn of Washington, Janice Louise Buckingham of Hickory and Emma Charlene Caldwell of Claysville; three sisters, Kathryn Ealy and Mary Lou Cox, both of Claysville and Peggy Staggers of Canton, Ohio; seven grandchildren, Tammie Jo Buckingham Moore, Eric Keith Buckingham, Robert Bruce and Joseph Mark Ryburn, Judd Wayne and Rend'ee Kathryn Caldwell and Shelly Lynn Caldwell Wigal; four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
