Lena J. Stilwell, 74, of Dormont, died Friday, April 3, 1998, in St. Clair Memorial Hospital, Pittsburgh. She was born December 10, 1923, in Lippencott, a daughter of Jesse and Pearle Crayne Stilwell. Since 1951, she had been a resident of Dormont. She was a 1941 graduate of Jefferson Township High School. Until her retirement in 1985, Ms. Stilwell was a claims processor for Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Western Pennsylvania for more than 30 years. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Lippencott. Surviving are a brother, Frank Stilwell of Waynesburg R.D.1; three sisters, Dorothy J. Kozorra of Castle Shannon, Billie Dulaney of Waynesburg and Charlene Yanak of Lowhill; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are two sisters, Francine S. Horn and Margaret Anne Stilwell; and two brothers, Paul C. and Robert Stilwell.

Thomas R. Swart
WW II veteran, grinder at McGraw Edison
Thomas Regis Swart, 77, of North Franklin Street, Washington, died unexpectedly at 12:30 p.m. Friday, April 3, 1998, in his home. He was born September 12, 1920, in Washington, a son of Ernest and Lulla Friend Swart. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Church. For many years, he was employed as a grinder at McGraw Edison. Mr. Swart was a 1938 graduate of Immaculate Conception High School. He enjoyed photography and gardening. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army, receiving the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the World War II Victory Medal and the Purple Heart. Surviving are two brothers, Fred Swart of Clio, Mich., and Robert Swart of Dunedin, Fla.; a sister, Geraldine Dulaney of Melvern; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are two sisters, Mary Swart and Evelyn McGahan.

James M. Walker
WW II veteran member of American Legion and DAV
James M. Walker, 74, of Jefferson R.D. 1, died Sunday, April 5, 1998, at the Oakland Veterans Hospital, Pittsburgh. He was born February 27, 1924, in Cumberland Township, a son of James Franklin and Hilda Fay Dugan Walker. On October 6, 1954, he married Clare Ethel Everly, who died November 7, 1993. Mr. Walker was employed as a railroad worker, a postal worker and had, at one time, worked as a constable in West Virginia. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy. He was a life member of both the American Legion Post No. 400, Carmichaels, and Disabled American Veterans No. 123, Waynesburg. Surviving are two daughters, Judy Birt of Chenango Forks, N.Y., and Mary Theresa Vorhees of Sloansville, N.Y.; a foster son, Rocky Serbaugh of Morgantown, W.Va.; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Ruby Main of Rogersville, Elizabeth Davis of Jefferson, Marjorie Six of Lawrenceville and Yvonna McGlone of Waynesburg; two brothers, Donald Walker of Carmichaels and Ira Walker of Lancaster, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are a brother, John Walker; and a sister, Dottie Walker.

Susan K. Blacka
Tax preparer, beautician
Susan K. Blacka, 50, of Virginia Beach, Va., formerly of Greensburg, died Saturday, April 4, 1998, in her home following a seven-month illness. Born August 7, 1947, in Westmoreland County, she was a daughter of the late Clarence and Florence Tedrow Green. Mrs. Blacka was employed as a tax preparer by the Jackson Hewitt Tax Service and was a beautician. She attended Mt. Herman United Methodist Church, Elizabeth City, N.C., and was a 1965 graduate of Washington High School. On June 5, 1965, she married Douglas R. Blacka, who survives. Mr. Blacka is formerly of Washington. Also surviving are a son, Scott Blacka of Norfolk, Va.; daughter, Tammy White of Elizabeth City; two brothers, Clarence Green of Yukonand Jack Green of Washington; a sister, Roberta Tarr of West Newton; and three grandchildren, Katie and Sara White and Haley Blacka. An infant daughter is deceased.

Philomena Colizza
Sewing instructor was hospital volunteer
Philomena "Minnie" Colizza, 87, formerly of the Thomas Campbell Apartments, died at 9:50 p.m. Sunday, April 5, 1998, in the Presbyterian Medical Center, Washington. She was born January 25, 1911, in Pittsburgh, a daughter of Louis and Asunta Pecora Pape. Mrs. Colizza was Catholic and had volunteered with the Washington Hospital Auxiliary for many years. For a number of years she was a bookkeeper and sewing teacher at the Singer Sewing Center in Pittsburgh. Her husband, Anthony F. Colizza, died May 3, 1948. Surviving are a daughter, Betty Arthur of Amity; two brothers, William Pape of Pittsburgh and Anthony Pape of Texas; three sisters, Jay Tapolci of Finleyville, Frances Farmer of Saxonburg and Sister Laura Pape of Pittsburgh; three grandchildren, Ronnie and Glen Arthur and Mary Jenkins; and three great-grandchildren. Deceased is a sister, Sylvia Falco.

Floyd E. Graham
Oregon resident was Trinity graduate
Floyd E. Graham, 77, died Sunday, April 5, 1998, in a Portland, Ore. care home. He was born February 9, 1921, in Washington, a son of Hicey and Sadie Mealy Graham. Mr. Graham grew up in Washington, where he graduated from Trinity High School in 1939. Mr. Graham entered the Army Air Force in August 1942 and was honorably discharged December 7, 1945. He worked at Jessop Steel, Washington, before moving to Oregon in 1961. After retirement in 1983, he and his wife moved to Sun City, Ariz. Mr. Graham attended Sherwood United Methodist Church and was active with the Masonic Lodge where he served as past Worshipful Master of Sherwood Midday Lodge, 164 AF&AM, past Patron of Holly Chapter 126 Order of the Eastern Star, past Royal Patron of Gresham Court Order of the Amaranth, past Master of Tigard Grange and past president of Sherwood Kiwanis. Surviving are his wife, Irene B., of Sun City, Ariz. who he married June 22, 1942; two daughters, Kathlene G. Swart of Sherwood, Ore., and Karen G. Larsen of Tualatin, Ore.; a son, Gordon A. Graham of Portland; five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren. Deceased are two brothers and a sister. Services will be held in Sherwood, Oregon.

Lauretta M. Henry, of Chapin, S.C., formerly of Washington, died Sunday, April 5, 1998. She was born December 17, 1911, in Washington, a daughter of William and Kate Gorby. Mrs. Henry was a member of Chapin United Methodist Church, Marjorie Derrick Circle of the United Methodist Women, Christian Fellowship Sunday School Class, Chapin Garden Club and the Tuesday Morning Bridge Club. Surviving are a daughter, Patricia Henry of Chapin; three sisters, Margaret Lindsay and Juanita Senesky, both of Washington and Sylvia Altiere of Meadow Lands; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are her husband, Willis W. Henry; and two brothers, Charles F. and William Gorby.

Alex Surow
Chicago resident formerly of Arden
Alex Surow, 80 of Chicago, Ill., formerly of Arden, died Saturday, April 4, 1998, in Chicago. He was born July 18, 1917, in Pittsburgh, a son of Alex and Olga Surow. Mr. Surow was a retired bookkeeper for an auto dealership in Chicago and a veteran of World War II. Surviving are four nieces, Janet Sasek and Joan Susko, both of Houston, Jean Cholak of Meadow Lands and Joyce Matich of Bethel Park; and several great-nieces and nephews. Deceased are a brother, John Surow; and a niece. Service and interment are private and at the convenience of the family.

Marjorie Day Walter
Accomplished musician graduated from WHS
Marjorie Day Walter, 77, of St. Louis, Mo., died Sunday, March 22, 1998. She was born November 26, 1920, in Washington, a daughter of Hamilton and Mary Wick Day. On June 22, 1946, she married Paul M. Walter, who died November 9, 1985. Mrs. Walter graduated from Washington High School in 1938 and the University of Pittsburgh in 1942, where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. Mrs. Walter was an accomplished musician, well-known throughout the area, and had been active for several years in two St. Louis repertory companies as an officer and pianist. She was also a member of the "River Blenders," which is a local chapter of the Sweet Adelines. Surviving are a son, Dennis H. Walter of Houston, Texas; a sister, LaGene D. Morris of Washington; and a brother, Leland T. Day of Naples, Fla.

A memorial service for Leota E. Hoyt of Washington, who died March 28, 1998, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 11, at the chapel in Washington Cemetery. The Rev. Terry Snyder will officiate.

Kathryn Flanigan, 87, of Burgettstown, died Tuesday, April 7, 1998, in her home. She was born in Joffre, a daughter of Phillip and Antonia Biccheria Rometti. Mrs. Flanigan was a member of St. Ann's Roman Catholic Church of Bulger, a member of the Burgettstown Senior Citizens and St. Ann's Ladies Guild. She was a retired employee of Petrucci's Market of Burgettstown. Surviving are three daughters, Kathleen Abate of Burr Ridge, Ill., Carole Latkovic of Bulger and Patricia Flanigan of Imperial; five grandchildren, Charles Abate, Jodi Martin, Kelly Kallas, and Edward and Kathleen Latkovic; five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Edith Skinner of McDonald. Deceased are her husband, Edward Patrick Flanigan; three brothers, Tony, Geno and Pete Rometti; and a sister, Rose Daley.

Floyd H. Gump

Floyd H. Gump, 55, of Box 164, Jefferson, died at 8:50 a.m. Tuesday, April 7, 1998, in Greene County Memorial Hospital. He was born June 11, 1942, in Blacksville, W.Va., a son of the late Everett S. Gump and Eva L. Phillips Gump of Carmichaels. Mr. Gump was a veteran of the U.S. Army and self-employed laborer. He was a member of VFW 3491 of Carmichaels and the James Farrell American Legion 330 of Waynesburg. He was Protestant. On February 20, 1998, he married Roxlena H. Martisko, who survives. Also surviving are five daughters, Carol E. Browlee and Kimberly Gump both of Cleveland, Ohio, Anita L. Workman of Greensboro, Georgiana Chambers of Mather and Melody Martisko of Jefferson; seven sons, Shirl Rogers, Floyd A. Gump, Richard L. Gump all of Cleveland, Ohio, Craig A. Martisko of Windridge, George A. Martisko of California, and Timothy J. and Shawn E. Martisko both of Jefferson; 21 grandchildren; six sisters, Annabelle Staley of Greensboro, Betty Courtwright and Shirley Farabee both of Waynesburg, Dolly Wright and Linda Bane both of Jefferson, and Mae Whipkey of Nemacolin; two brothers, Stanley and James Gump both of Waynesburg; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are two sisters, Icie White and Darlene Rogers; a brother, Edward Gump; and one granddaughter.

Robert Orlo Masteller, 71, of Pittsburgh, died 5 :20 p.m. Tuesday, April 7, 1998, in Washington Hospital. He was born August 28, 1926, in Akron, Ohio, a son of Orlo Glenn and Marie O. Beachler Masteller. Mr. Masteller was self-employed in the heating and air conditioning business. He was a member of the North Gate Church of Pittsburgh and was a graduate of West Alexander High School and attended Waynesburg College. Mr. Masteller served in the Merchant Marines as a radio operator during World War II and served a total of seven years. On September 18, 1977, he married Florence Cowden, who survives. Also surviving are a son, Gene Robert Masteller of Washington, a daughter Linda Lynn Sine of Wheeling, W.Va.; a brother, Roderick Paul Masteller of Valley Grove, W.Va.; a sister, Patricia A. Clark of Valley Grove; five grandchildren, John, Amanda and Matthew Masteller, Michelle and Michael Sine. Deceased is a sister, Ardith M. Carryer.

Katherine Morris

Katherine Morris, 82, of Bentley Tower, Bentleyville, died Tuesday, April 7, 1998, at Washington Hospital. She was born October 4, 1915, in Ellsworth, a daughter of Alexander and Veronica Kvasnick Morris. She was a retired assistant manager from Isaly's in Pittsburgh. Miss Morris was a member of St. Nicholas Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Monessen and St. Michael Ukrainian National Society, Lodge 109. She was the last of her immediate family. Surviving are a nephew, Charles Sabolsky and a niece, Patricia Ann Sabolsky, both of Marianna. Deceased are two sisters, Sophia Sabolsky and Eve Mannella.

Julia E. Murn, 76, formerly of Vestaburg, died Monday, April 6, 1998, in Manor Care Nursing Facility, McMurray, following a lengthy illness. She was born January 19, 1922, in Vestaburg, a daughter of William and Verona Rozaniya Ruday. She was a homemaker living in Vestaburg most of her life. She was a member of the Calvin United Presbyterian Church in Brownsville. Surviving are two daughters, Frances Baron of Colonial Heights, Va., and Patricia Brown Fetters of Mesa, Ariz. and also Tampa, Fla.; a son, Dr. Alvin Murn of McMurray; seven grandchildren; three great- grandchildren; two brothers, William Ruday of Houston, Texas, and Andrew Ruday of Burkbunnette, Texas; and a sister, Elizabeth McCain of California. Deceased are her husband, Alvin Murn; and three brothers, Michael, Louis and James Ruday.

Arizona Virginia Scritchfield, 93, of Dilliner R.D.1, died Monday, April 6, 1998, at the Greene County Memorial Hospital, Waynesburg. She was born April 11, 1904, in Mingo County, W.Va., a daughter of George W. and Arisbia Farley Arthur. Mrs. Scritchfield was the oldest resident of the community of Taylorstown and was a member of the House of Prayer Assembly of God Church in Taylortown. Surviving are a daughter, Martha Bernice Wise of Taylortown; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren. Deceased are her husband, William Aaron Scritchfield, who died in 1975; a son, Carl W. Shuck; a sister, Melvina; and four brothers, John, George, Russell and Ralph Arthur. She was the last of her immediate family.

Walter F. Tomecheck, 87, of Adah R.D.1, died Monday, April 6, 1998, at his home. He was born December 19, 1910, in Donle Nemce Moravia, Czech Republic, son of C.J. and Marie Bittner Tomechek. Mr. Tomecheck was a miner for more than 50 years with Buckeye Mine and was a member of United Mine Workers of America Local 6290. He was also a member of St. Albert Roman Catholic Church; the German Township School Board; founding and charter member of Adah Gun Club; the German-Masontown Public Library; Adah Volunteer Fire Department; Palmer Pioneers Slovak Society; and the Boy Scouts of America. Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Margaret A. Korintus Tomecheck; three daughters, Mary M. Shalek of Chareton, Ohio, Elizabeth L. Gorman of Palmer and Evelyn A. Marovic of Masontown; a son, Allan R. Vinch of Stevensville, Md.; 10 grandchildren, Mark Shalek, Debbie Zuzek, Julia Dugan, Christine Gorman, David Marovic, Tracy McKay, Donna Marovic, Celeste Magazine and Michael and Lauren Vinch; 10 great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Frank Tomecek of Palmer Heights and Joseph Tomecheck of Uniontown; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, deceased is his brother, John Tomecek.

Surviving are a son, Louis Vigano of Phoenix, Ariz.; a daughter, Joann Kiselich of McMurray; four grandchildren, Carrie, Douglas, Tammi and Susan; and two brothers, Carl and Eugene Zanotelli. Deceased are her husband, Romualdo Vigano; two brothers, Ernest and William; and a sister, Anne Reicher.

Benjamin M. Weaver
Lifelong resident of Cecil was veteran of World War II
Benjamin McConnell Weaver, 81, of Cool Acres Farm, 78 Lewicki Road, Canonsburg, died Saturday, April 4, 1998, in North Hills Hospital, North Richland Hills, Texas. He was born December 28, 1916, in Cecil Township, a son of Thomas Dell and Blanche McConnell Weaver. Mr. Weaver was a lifelong resident of Cecil Township where he owned and operated Cool Acres Farm and was also branch manager for Farm Bureau Feed Store in Burgettstown for many years. He and his wife worked to implement Penn State's Ag in the Classroom project into Washington County. He was a 1937 graduate from Cecil High School and a lifelong member of Venice Presbyterian Church and Millers Run Grange. Mr. Weaver was active in the Washington County Farmer's Association and the Jefferson College Historical Society and was a veteran of World War II where he served in the 74th Bomb Squadron in Panama and the Galapegos Islands. On June 28, 1948, he married Ruth Clark, who died December 2, 1995. Surviving are a daughter, Dr. Marlene Mitchell of Fort Worth, Texas; seven grandchildren, Matthew, Mark, Merritt, Melody, Marshall, Marita and Madison Mitchell; and several nieces and nephews.

Nellie Z. Wetzler
Lived briefly in Greene County
Nellie Zimmerman Wetzler, 75, of San Pablo, Calif., formerly of Greene County, died February 14, 1998. She was born November 28, 1922, in Binghamton, N.Y. Mrs. Wetzler lived in San Pablo almost continuously for 52 years, except for a short period spent in Greene County. Mrs. Wetzler was a retired quality inspector with the Oliver Tire & Rubber Co. in San Pablo and was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 10 in Richmond, Calif. Surviving are her husband, John Wetzler of San Pablo; two daughters, Barbara Allen of San Pablo and Joanne Heiser of Dixon, Calif.; six sons, Bill Gardner and Butch Zimmerman, both of Vallejo, Calif., Bob Gardner of Texas, Bud Gardner of Florida, Bert Gardner of Pinole, Calif., and J.R. Zimmerman of Dixon; 31 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildern. Deceased is a previous husband, Whiteley Township native Ernest Zimmerman. Services were held in San Pablo.

Edith B. Clutter, 93, of Washington, formerly of Claysville, died at 10:15 p.m. Thursday, July 30, 1998, in her home. She had been in failing health for the past year. She was born July 1, 1905, in Donegal Township, Washington County, a daughter of David and Blanche Ferrell Reynolds. Mrs. Clutter attended Claysville High School. She was Protestant and a homemaker. On September 14, 1926, she married Henry A. Clutter, who died September 5, 1980. A daughter, Marilyn Dreyer, died January 16, 1971. Also deceased are two brothers, John and Gaylord Reynolds; and two sisters, Dorothy and Lucille Crothers. Surviving are a daughter, Catherine C. Miller of Claysville; four grandchildren, Joyce Reeves, Keith Dreyer, Rhonda Amos and Eric Dreyer; three great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Gerard E. Hoff
Served with Marine Corps during World War II
Gerard E. (Jerry) Hoff, 79, of Graysville, formerly of Elizabeth, died Friday, July 31, 1998. He was born June 8, 1919, in Pittsburgh, a son of Charles H. and Helena Wagner Hoff. Mr. Hoff flew 72 missions over Japanese territory with Marine Corps VMB 433 during World War II as a navigator-bombardier. He also was a member of Anglers Club of Clairton and Tri-County Leathernecks Association. Mr. Hoff retired from U.S. Steel's Irvin Works after 40 years of service. Surviving are his wife, Lillian M. Huff; two sons, Gerard Hoff of Lake Forest, Calif., and Karl Hoff of Arleta, Calif.; three daughters, Charlene Graham of Elizabeth, and Lillian M. Johnson and Lisa M. Hoff, both of Graysville; one sister, Helen Marie Hoff of Pleasant Hills; several grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. Deceased are six brothers, Herman, Charles, Paul, Joe, Milton and Norman Hoff.

John S. Monar
Retired employee of Penn Central Railroad
John S. Monar, 87, formerly of 160 Valley Road, Canonsburg, died Wednesday, July 29, 1998, in Allegheny Valley Hospital. He was born November 4, 1910, in Pricedale, a son of Bert and Julia Taylor Molnar. Mr. Monar was a retired employee of Penn Central Railroad and a member of First United Methodist Church of Canonsburg. He also was a member of Canon Lodge 204 Knights of Pythias. On June 20, 1941, he married Arminta Mae Hotchkiss, who died June 21, 1990. Surviving are one son, James B. Monar of Roanoke, Va.; five brothers, William Molnar of Valencia, Albert and Alex Molnar, both of Gibsonia, Robert Molnar of Florence, S.C., and Gabert Molnar of Sumter, S.C.; two sisters, Edith Breakiron of Morgantown, W.Va., and Bertha Davis of Loveland, Colo.; and three grandchildren, Sharon, Joy and Stephen Monar. Deceased is one sister, Helen Nemes.

Ada V. Poling, 88, of Waynesburg R.D.5, died Wednesday, July 29, 1998, in her home after a lengthy illness. She was born March 18, 1910, in Crafton, W.Va., a daughter of John and Anzie Poling. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Waynesburg and was the last of her immediate family. She made her home with Sam and Connie Phillips. Deceased are two sisters and one brother. Visitation will be private. Burial will be in Oakmont Cemetery, Waynesburg.

Joseph I. Rimmel
WWII veteran was retired coal miner
Joseph I. "Jody" Rimmel, 74, of Dilliner R.D.1 (Moffitt), died Thursday, July 30, 1998, in Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown, W.Va. He was born October 13, 1923, in Gray's Landing, a son of Joseph and Cora Hughes Rimmel. Mr. Rimmel was a coal miner. He retired from Buckeye Coal Co., Nemacolin Mine, and was a member of UMWA Local 6290. He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army military police, and was awarded a Good Conduct Medal, Victory Medal and the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with five bronze stars. He was a member of American Legion Post 499 and a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 747, both in Point Marion. Surviving are his wife, Ann Hoar Rimmel; a son, Charles "Bud" Rimmel of Dilliner; two daughters, Josephine Rawlings of Dilliner and Karen Morris of Greensboro; eight grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are a son, Joseph Rimmel; a daughter who died in infancy, Sandra Jean Rimmel; a great-grandson; two sisters, Minnie Anderson and Cora Rimmel; and four brothers, Ralph Mahlon Rimmel, Charles Rimmel, and Leslie and Jasper Rimmel, who died in infancy.

Peter Rusin Sr., 81, of Monongahela, died Thursday, July 30, 1998, in Monongahela Valley Hospital, Carroll Township. He was born July 8, 1917, in Monongahela, a son of Andrew Rusin and Mary Resetar Rusin Lazorenko. Mr. Rusin was a member of St. Anthony Church in Monongahela, where he served as an usher for more than 20 years and was a member of the morning Mass group. He was a crossing guard for CCD classes and was active in St. Anthony's blood drives. He was a member of Knights of Columbus, Rev. Edwin L. Kaczmarek Council 2600, where he held the rank of third-degree knight, and since 1961 was a member of St. Vincent de Paul, where he served as treasurer at the time of his death. Mr. Rusin retired from Combustion Engineering in East Monongahela and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of Frank Downer American Legion Post 302 of Monongahela and was active with Meals on Wheels in Monongahela. Surviving is his wife, Anna Mehalak Rusin, with whom he celebrated 57 years of marriage on January 18, 1998. Also surviving are two sons, Peter Jr. of Edison, N.J., and John Rusin of Damascus, Ark.; two daughters, Elizabeth Safran of Forward Township, Monongahela, and Selina Yarosh of Canonsburg; 15 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Michael of Mount Eagle, Tenn., and Andrew Rusin of McKeesport. Deceased are a brother, George Rusin; and two sisters, Mary Fedak and Elizabeth Bradish.

Harry W. Schmitt, 71, of Avella (Blaine Township), died Thursday, July 30, 1998, in AUH-Allegheny General, Pittsburgh. He was born July 4, 1927, in Pittsburgh, a son of Harry A. and Evelyn O'Toole Schmitt. Mr. Schmitt was an active member of Sacred Heart Worship Site of Immaculate Conception Parish. A graduate of Connelly Trade School, Pittsburgh, he served as a corporal in the U.S. Air Force from 1946 to 1949. He was employed as a salesman for Black & Decker for 40 years until his retirement in 1985. Mr. Schmitt enjoyed woodworking. On September 17, 1955, in Pittsburgh, he married Mary Lou Aul, who survives. Also surviving are three sons, Michael Schmitt of Columbus, Ohio, Harry Schmitt of Tucson, Ariz., and Raymond Schmitt of Richmond, Va.; three daughters, July Welch of Columbus, and Margaret and Sally Schmitt, both of Pittsburgh; a sister, Myrtle Rectenwald of Pittsburgh; three grandchildren, Amanda Welch and Jessica and Billy Schmitt; and several nieces and nephews. Samuel F. Yaquinto, 72, of Sunnybrook Road, Washington, died unexpectedly at 8:55 p.m. Wednesday, July 29, 1998, in his home. He was born February 5, 1926, in Washington, a son of Frank and Teresa Pistiva Yaquinto. Mr. Yaquinto was a former member of Immaculate Conception Church. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. For more than 50 years, he was employed by Bricklayers Union Local 9 and was last employed by them as a bricklayer for Jessop Steel, from where he retired. He was a member of Sons of Italy and B.P.O.E. Elks Lodge 776, and enjoyed fishing and hunting. On June 13, 1951, he married Dorothy Arlene Morgan, who died September 20, 1997. Surviving are a son, Tony Yaquinto of Tampa, Fla.; a stepdaughter, Carolyn A. Sprowls of Washington; two brothers, Ralph "Tubby" Yaquinto of Washington and Robert Yaquinto of the state of California; two grandchildren, Michael Anthony and Matthew Vincent Yaquinto; two stepgrandchildren, Molly Marie and Anthony John Mace; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are two brothers, James Vincent (Gino) and Tony Yaquinto.

Roylance Lee "Lance" Adams, 70, of Washington, died at 8:15 a.m. Sunday, August 9, 1998, in Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh. He was born February 16, 1928, in Washington, a son of Floyd T. and Hazel Smolter Adams. He was employed as a plant operator by the Washington-East Washington Joint Authority for 38 years. Mr. Adams was a 1945 graduate of Trinity High School and a graduate of Penn Commercial. He enjoyed golfing. He served in the U.S. Army for two years as a corporal. Mr. Adams was a member of Edwin Scott Linton Post 175 of the American Legion and the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 22. On July 3, 1973, he married Laura Phillips, who survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Valerie L. Harvey and Donna L. Dyson, both of Washington; a stepdaughter, Vicki Barrett of Washington; three stepsons, Donald, James and John Barrett, all of Washington; a sister, Cleo Behanna of Washington; three grandchildren, Tracee S. Malik, Tammy M. York and Stacy L. Harvey; eight stepgrandchildren; and two great-grandsons. He was formerly employed as a branch manager of Associates Finance Co., Uniontown, and he had served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Mr. Brown was a member of Elks Lodge 757, Moose Lodge 461 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4793, all of Waynesburg. Surviving are a daughter, Melodie Brown of Waynesburg; two granddaughters, Bethany and Allyson Phillips; a sister, Betty Parker; and several nieces and nephews. He was born May 8, 1925, in Rea, a son of John Chechuck Sr. and Mary Matovcik. Mr. Chechuck retired as a lifelong, self-employed dairy farmer in 1995. He was a member of St. Michael Roman Catholic Church, Avella. On November 28, 1957, in St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church, Canonsburg, he married Dorothy Doubnich, who survives. Also surviving are four daughters, Elizabeth Jean Kubacki of Washington, Dorothy Rose Chechuck of Burgettstown, Gloria Chechuck of McDonald and Regina Ann Chechuck of Cross Creek; a son, George Andy Chechuck of Cross Creek; five grandchildren and three stepgrandchildren. He was born December 3, 1934, in Sewickley, a son of Joseph J. and Lois A. Murdoch Sambolt of West Mifflin. Mr. Murdoch worked as a truck driver for 35 years. He was employed by Harmony Transport Inc., Ambridge, at the time of his death. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5756 of Sewickley, the American Legion Post 4 of Sewickley and the National Veterans Service Support Post 5156. Mr. Murdoch enjoyed fishing, road racing and sports. He was big football fan. He was a graduate of Sewickley Valley High School and had attended the University of Pittsburgh. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. On January 22, 1955, he married Elizabeth (Betty) A. Lolli, who survives. Also surviving, in addition to his parents, are a daughter, Cynthia L. Miller of Washington; a son, David K. Murdoch IV of Washington; a sister, Theresa J. Brown of Munhall; two grandchildren, Alys Marie Murdoch and Ian R. Miller; and a nephew.

Mr. Carter was formerly employed by the FBI and Observer Publishing Co. before relocating to Chagrin Falls, Ohio. He was owner and president of Robert Carter & Associates Public Relations Firm in Cleveland, Ohio. An accomplished writer, chosen as one of 40 to attend the Writers Retreat Conference on Maui, Hawaii, he had recently completed two full-length fiction books, which are planned for later publication. An avid hunter and sportsman, his articles were published in Outdoor Life and Field and Streams sports magazines and Pennsylvania Game News. Surviving are his wife, Ann Carter; one son, Jeff Carter of Sandy, Utah; one daughter, Tracy Carter of Novelty, Ohio; four brothers, Ben H. Carter and James B. McCullough, both of Mt. Lebanon, and Richard A. McCullough and William L. McCullough, both of Washington; one sister, Virginia L. He was last employed by Bob Verner Buses as a bus driver in the McGuffey School District before retiring because of ill health. Surviving are his wife, Virginia Ruth Burns Six, whom he married April 27, 1963; a daughter Bonnie Jo Whipkey of Prosperity R.D.1; a brother, Charles Ray Six of Los Altos, Calif.; and a granddaughter, Cheyanne Whipkey. She was born April 22, 1913, in Donora, a daughter of Robert and Christina MacDonald Laughland. Mrs. Delso lived most of her life in Monongahela, where she was a member of First United Methodist Church. Her husband, Norman C. Delso, died August 25, 1996. Surviving are a son, Robert Delso of Monongahela; a daughter, Donna Opfer of Monongahela; five grandchildren, Brian Delso, Brea Delso, Darren Opfer, Lori Opfer and Jordan Lutz; and two sisters, Margaret Delso of Monongahela and Jean Rodriquez of Donora. Deceased are four sisters, Anna Gilchrist Wazny, Emily Dawson, Agnes Eckert and Christina Wazny; and a brother, James Laughland.
