MARGARET M. ELIAS
Margaret M. Elias, a resident of Spring Brook Township for the past
45 years, died Wednesday at Mercy Hospital after an illness. Her husband
is Robert Elias. They had been married for 45 years. Born in Ashland, daughter
of the late Otto and Millie Klase Welsh, she was a 1937 graduate of Newton
High School. She was a homemaker, and also worked at St. Mary's Villa.
Prior to retirement, she was a school bus driver for the North Pocono School
District. She was a member of Spring Brook United Church of Christ. She
enjoyed flower gardening, sewing and baking, and was a loving mother and
wife. Also surviving are two daughters, Roberta Elias, Spring Brook, and
Kathy Wilbur, Factoryville; a brother, Edward Welsh, Newton Ransom; several
nieces and nephews. The funeral was in the Spring Brook United Church of

JOHN W. SMITH JR.
John W. Smith Jr., 48, a lifelong resident of Scranton, died September
13 in the Veterans Administration Hospital, Plains Township. Born in Scranton,
son of the late James William and Mabel Green Smith, he attended Scranton
Technical High School, later received his G.E.D., and then received a business
degree from Lackawanna Junior College. He was an Army veteran of the Vietnam
War, having served with the 173rd Airborne Division, and received the Purple
Heart for wounds suffered in combat. Prior to becoming disabled, he owned
and operated Quality Cleaning, Scranton, and was a member of the Disabled
American Veterans. He was a very giving and loving father, brother and
grandfather, and one of the ways he showed it was by handing out candy
as he traveled in his wheelchair. Surviving are two sons, John Jr., Scranton,
and Jason, Jessup; two stepsons, William Price, Scranton, and Peter Howey,
Jessup; three daughters, Tonya Martin and Kimberly Smith, both of Scranton,
and Nikita Smith, Jessup; two sisters, Bertha Milewski, Mount Cobb, and
Barbara Jezorwski, Scranton; four brothers, Robert Purdy, Wilkes-Barre;
James and Joseph Smith, both of Scranton; and Jeffery Smith, Wilkes-Barre;
13 grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. The funeral was from the

OLGA FOX
Olga Fox, Clarks Summit, died September 1 at Community Center after
an illness. She was the wife of Joseph H. Fox. The couple would have celebrated
their 52nd wedding anniversary on Nov. 27. Born in Dunmore, daughter of
the late Elias and Mary Galician Hryshko, she was a member of Our Lady
of the Snows Church, Clarks Summit, and its Altar and Rosary Society. She
was a Janurary 1944 graduate of Dunmore High School and was a loving homemaker.
Also surviving are two sons, Joseph R., Dublin, Ohio, and John R., Colchester,
Conn.; a daughter, Kristin Salmon, Clarks Summit; six sisters, Mary Worsnick,
Ann Poveromo, Genet Boland, Irene Palmer and Marge Reilly, all of Dunmore;
and Evelyn Hinz, Roaring Brook Township; 10 grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a son, Bobby, on July 12, 1964; a brother,

GERTRUDE A. GALE
Gertrude A. "Trudy" Gale, 88, 3115 James Buchannan Drive, Elizabethtown,
died September 2 at the Masonic Health Center, Elizabethtown. Her husband
of 67 years is Robert C. Gale, Elizabethtown. Born in Scranton, daughter
of the late Andrew and Minnie E. Kerchner Wagner, she was a member of Hamlin
Centenary Methodist Church, Hamlin, where she was a member of the Sunday
School, and the women's society. She also sang in the church choir. Prior
to retiring in 1975, she was employed for 10 years as a secretary at the
Hamlin Elementary School. She was a member and past worthy matron of the
Order of Eastern Star, Harriet Green chapter 198, Hamlin. Also surviving
are two sons, Paul B., Burke, Va., and John C., Celebration, Fla.; a sister,
Lauriena Lowrie, Baldwinsville, N.Y.; Five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.

JOHN JOSEPH SAMSOCK JR.
John Joseph Samsock Jr., 80, Taylor, died September 3 in the Hospice
Unit of the Community Medical Center. His wife, the former Mary Stewart,
died in 1957. Born in Taylor, son of the late John Joseph and Victoria
Soflarska Samsock, he was an Army Air Force veteran of World War II, and
a member of the American Legion post 306, Taylor. While in the service,
he received the Good Conduct Medal, the American Campaign Medal, the European
African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal the World War II Victory Medal. He
was a former member of the Taylor Boy Scouts. Prior to retirement, he was
a forklift operator at Tobyhanna Army Depot. He was a member of the Immaculate
Conception Roman Catholic Church, Taylor, where he was an usher and a member
of its Family Society. He was a former amateur boxer, and loved flowers,
gardening and building rock walls. Surviving are two sons, John, Olney,
Md., and Charles, Ransom; a daughter, Mary Murman, Moscow; three brothers,
Louie, Lewisburg, W. Va., Carl and Frank, both of Olney, Md.; four sisters,
Helen Godlewski, Adele Molinaro, Nellie Holland, all of Taylor, and Victoria
Laskiewicz, Moscow; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; several nieces
and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Joseph and Stanley,

LILLIAN POHL MATTHEWS
Lillian Pohl Matthews, 87, Gouldsboro, formerly of Wilkes-Barre, died
September 3 at the VNA Hospice Unit of Community Medical Center. She was
the widow of W. Edwin Matthews, who died in 1967. Born in Wilkes-Barre,
daughter of the late Frank and Amelia Fetzer Pohl, she had resided in Gouldsboro
for more than 40 years. She was a graduate of Wilkes-Barre Business College.
She was a member of the Harriet Greene Chapter 198 Order of the Eastern
Star, and a member of the Gouldsboro United Methodist Church. She was active
in many of the church's organizations. Lillian was a loving wife, mother,
grandmother, great-grandmother and sister who will be missed by all who
loved her. She was blessed with a loving family and many friends. Surviving
are a daughter, Beverly Matthews, East Hampton, N.Y.; a son, Wayne Matthews,
Alexandria Bay, N.Y.; a sister, Gertrude Martin, Lake Forest, Calif.; three
grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and a niece. She was preceded in

George J. Cerando, the Hideout, died August 31 in Gainesville, Fla.
His wife , the former Theresa Manzi Cerando, died in 1998. Born in New
York City, N.Y., son of the late Dominic and Vincentina Capolano Cerando,
he was a member of St. Thomas More Church, Lake Ariel. Prior to retirement,
he was employed as a garment designer and cutter. He was a member of UNICO,
the Hideout Adult Social Group and the Garment Union. Surviving are three
daughters, Doris Muro Kelly, Crystal River, Fla., and Georgia Ackermann,
Lake Ariel; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

FRANK J. KRUSHINSKY
Frank J. Krushinsky, Moscow, died September 3 in Mercy Hospital. His
wife of 33 years is the former Theresa Thornton. Born in 1944, Peckville,
son of the late Frank S. and Henritta Tracewski Krushinsky, he was a graduate
of St. Patrick's High School, Olyphant, and of the University of Scranton,
where he earned a bachelor of science in management and a master's degree
in business administration. After serving in the Air Force in Washington,
D.C. from 1966 to 1969, he returned to the Scranton area, where he became
the director of manpower for the City of Scranton. After a 20 year career
in the private sector as a marketing consultant with I.B.M., and as an
investment consultant with Dean Witter, Mr. Krushinsky returned to public
service to head up the Scranton Sewer Authority as executive director.
He was a member of the Elmhurst Country Club, the Knights of Columbus,
and St. Eulalia's Roman Catholic Church. Also surviving are two daughters,
Kara Duquette, Springfield, Mass., and Franny Krushinsky, Charleston, S.C.;
a granddaughter and grandson. He was preceded in death by a sister, Karen

COLE WILLIAM PARKINS
Cole William Parkins, infant son of Robert W. and Penny M. Reilly Parkins,
Elmhurst, died September 6 in the Community Medical Center. Though he lived
only briefly, he was loved by all his family. Also surviving are two brothers,
Curt and Kyle, at home; paternal grandmother, Ruth Herman Parkins, Elmhurst;
maternal grandmother, the Rev. Betty Gillette Reilly, Binghamton, N.Y.;
maternal grandfather, Edward Reilly, Hamlin; aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, William Parkins.

CARL J. DEL PRETE
Carl J. Del Prete, 70, a South Scranton resident, died August 26 at
the VNA Hospice Inpatient Unit at Community Medical Center after an illness.
His widow is the former Ann Grant. The couple would have observed their
38th wedding anniversary in November.
Born in Scranton, son of the late Louis and Catherine Sylvester Del
Prete, he was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Church. Prior to his retirement,
he was a warehouse manager for Artcraft Studios, Old Forge. He was an Army
veteran of the Korean Conflict.
The light of his life was the recent addition of his first grandchild.
He was proud of the fact that he still resided in the home in which he
was born.
Also surviving are two daughters, Catherine at home, and Mary Thomas,
Spring Brook; a son, William L., Madisonville; three brothers, Leo, Newton
Ransom; Louis, Lady Lakes, Fla., and Robert, Raritan, N.J.; one grandchild;
nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by a sister, Angela Martin; and two brothers,
Ralph and Francis.

CONSTANTINO JUNI J. CALZOLA JR.
Constantino Juni J. Calzola Jr., 73, 63 Cottage St., Carbondale,
died August 27 in Marian Community Hospital after an illness. His wife,
Ethel Phillips, died in 1981.
Born in Carbondale, son of the late Constantino Sr. and Mary Panfili
Calzola, he was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of the Armed
Training Command, Fort Hood, Texas. Prior to retirement, he was self-employed
as a truck driver, and later employed with Carlo Trucking and Tuzze Trucking,
both of Carbondale. He was also a diesel mechanic.
He was a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather and brother.
He loved NASCAR and was an avid hunter. He will be sadly missed by all
who loved him.
Surviving are four sons, Albert L., Greenfield Township; Douglas A.,
Carbondale; Robert J., Madisonville, and John J., Cherryville; a brother,
Albert (Abe); a sister, Eleanor Swingle, Mahwah, N.J.; seven grandchildren;
two great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; several great-nieces
and great-nephews.

J. CALVIN ARMSTRONG
J. Calvin Armstrong, Clarks Summit, died August 29 in the VNA inpatient
Hospice unit at Community Medical Center. His widow is the former Irene
Klein. They celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary in February.
Born in Vandling, son of the late Albert and Loretta Armstrong, he
was a graduate of Vandling High School, where he served as president of
his class, and had attended Lackawanna Junior College, Scranton. He was
an Army veteran of World War II, serving as a medical technician. Before
retirement, he was a dispatcher for the Yellow Freight System. He had formerly
been employed by Norwalk Shirks Freight Co. and had been employed in the
freight business for more than 39 years. He was an active member of Immanual
Lutheran Church, Scranton, where he served as a trustee and Braille worker.
He was a member of the South Abington Lions Club and the Abington Post
7069, Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Also surviving are two daughters, Karen Muir, Mount Cobb, and Debra
Altier, Greenfield Township; a son, Alan, Chinchilla; eight grandchildren,
nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Shirley Kresock; and two brothers,
Albert and Ronald.

BERNARD P. TRINOVITCH SR.
Bernard P. Trinovitch, 70, Archbald, died August 29 at Mercy Hospital.
His wife of 44 years is Catherine Trinovitch.
Born July 1, 1930 in Jessup, son of the late George and Mary Trinovitch,
he was a member of Holy Ghost Church, Jessup. He was a veteran of the Korean
War, having earned the Sharp Shooter medal. He was a member of the Jessup
VFW Post, and the Disabled American Veterans.
He was an avid hunter and outdoorsman, and was a loving husband, father
and grandfather.
Also surviving are a daughter, Judy Slocum, Dalton; three sons, Bernard
LaPlume; Keith, Falls, and Andrew, Mount Cobb; a brother, John, Levittown;
five grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two brothers; George and Andrew, and three
sisters, Mary Trino, Ann Lakatta and Margaret Bernacki.

Odessa C. Murray, 81, Harrisburg, formerly of Scranton, died August
25 at home after an illness. She was the wife of James Murray.
Born in Scranton, daughter of the late Roger and Grace Edmondson Tyler,
she was a member of Bethel AME Church, Scranton, its choir and usher board.
Her hobbies included ceramics, cooking, painting and sewing. She was
a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister.

both of Harrisburg; three sons, Robert Tyler, Moscow; James Murray, Harrisburg,

MARY C. FLOYD
Mary C. Floyd, Scranton, died August 29 at Moses Taylor Skilled Nursing
Facility. She was the widow of John Floyd, who died in March 1968.
Born in Scranton, daughter of the late George and Elizabeth Sabad Leitner,
she was a lifelong resident of the city. Prior to retirement, she worked
at the Scranton Dry Goods store. She was a member of Concord United Church
of Christ, the Concord Quilters and the Concord Womens's Fellowship. She
was active in the Girl Scouts and in Birthright of Scranton. She was a
member of the North Scranton Food Pantry, and active in Tri-Chem and Friendly
Home Parties.
She was a wonderful person, loved by all, especially children. She
surrounded everyone she touched with love. She was a loving mother, grandmother
and great-grandmother.
Surviving are five sons, George and Douglass Judge, both of Scranton;
Jerry Judge, Baton Rouge, La.; Paul Conlon, LaHambra, Calif.; and Joseph
Conlon, Topock, Ariz.; three daughters, Ann Tempesta, Peckville; Mary Jane
Gallagher, Scranton; and Caroline Denginia, Moscow; a brother, George Leitner,
Lake Wallenpaupack; three sisters, Romaine Fitch and Kathleen Monahan,
both of Scranton; and Lucille Kelly, Dover, N.J.; 20 grandchildren; 29
great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a son, Bernard Judge, and a sister, Christine
Heinz.

Anna Gerzonich, a former resident of Dunmore, and Micco, Fla., died
August 31 at the home of her niece, Mary Ann Gilarde, Roaring Brook Township,
after an illness. She was the widow of Joseph Gerzonich, who died in 1998.
Born in Scranton, daughter of the late John and Frances Banick Foltha,
she was educated in Scranton public schools, and was a member of St. Luke s
Roman Catholic Church, Barefoot Bay, Fla.
Also surviving are other nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Hoylick.

Joseph Jerry Redding , 62, Wilkes-Barre, died August 30, in the VA
Hospital, Plains Township. His former wife is Barbara Redding.
Born Feb. 11, 1938, in Pittston, son of Jean Gibbons Redding and the
late Joseph Cork Redding of Pittston, he graduated from Pittston Central
Catholic High School and served in the Army. He formerly worked as an international
export manager at Berol Corp. in Danbury, Conn., and Venezualia, Columbia.
He was a member of the American Legion and St. Conrad's Young Men's Social
Club.
He was a loving father, son, grandfather, brother and uncle. He was
an avid reader of books and newspapers. He loved doing crossword puzzles,
being on the Internet, and channel surfing.
Surviving are a son, Gary, Wilkes-Barre; two sisters, Shiela Flaherty,
Moscow, and Ann Connell, New Freedom; two grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

James W. Williams, 71, Lake Ariel, died August 24 in the VNA Hospice

former Frances Czubowicz.
Born March 12, 1929, in Arlington, son of the late James W. and Helena
Hanlon Williams, he was a graduate of Hawley High School and was a member
of St. Mary's Church, Ledgedale. Before retirement, he had been employed
by Ford Motor Co., Mahway, N.J.

Mary V. Corcoran, 87, a lifelong South Scranton resident, died August
26 after a lengthy illness at the Hospice Preferred Choice Inpatient Unit
at Mid-Valley Hospital, Peckville. She was the widow of James Corcoran,
who died in October 1974.
Born in Scranton, daughter of the late John and Kathryn Kennedy Sheerin,
she was a member of Nativity of Our Lord Church, and its combined society.
She was a graduate of Scranton Technical High School, class of 1931.
She was a wonderful mother and grandmother, and was respected by her
family and friends.
Surviving are two daughters, Marie Hopkins and Kathryn Duffy, both
of Scranton; three sons, James, Woodbridge, N.J., Joseph, Moscow, and Gerard,
Justice; a sister, Kathryn Forrester, Scranton; 20 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren;
nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by a son, John, and a brother, John.

RICHARD J. NASH
Richard J. Nash, Lake Ariel, died August 25 in the Hospice Unit of
Mercy Hospital after an illness. His widow is the former Phyllis P. Chumard.
Born in Scranton, son of the late Harry Levi and Elizabeth Mae Phillips
Nash, he attended Lake Vocational School, East Stroudsburg University,
Pennsylvania State University, Ursinus College and the University of Pennsylvania.
Prior to retirement, he had been employed for 37 years as a production
engineer by Superior Tube Company, Norristown. He was a member of the Lake
Ariel Fire Company, the Wayne County Fire Police, and the Pennsylvania
Fire Police Associations.
He was a member of the American Society of Non-Destructive Testing,
a charter member of the American Society of Quality Control, Salem Lodge
330 Free and Accepted Masons, Keystone Consistory, and Tall Cedars of Lebanon.
He also served for 18 years on the Wayne County Planning Commission, and
he was a former Lake Township auditor for many years.
Surviving are a son, Richard, Norristown; two daughters, Barbara Griffin,
Westminster, Md., and Mary Lou Gross, Norristown; a sister, Francis Roberts,
Santa Rosa, Calif.; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; several
nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Harry and a sister, Anna Meome.

Mary Ann Arcurie Malloy, West Scranton, died August 17 at Mercy Hospital
after being stricken ill at home. She was the wife of Joseph Malloy.
Born in Scranton, daughter of Eugene and Helen Castellano Arcurie,
she was a graduate of West Scranton High School and Empire Beauty School.
She was employed as a hairdresser by the 222 Salon, Scranton, and owned
her own dance studio in Pittston. She was also a cheerleading coach at
St. Patrick's School, West Scranton, and a member of St. Patrick's Church.
Also surviving are a daughter, Delaney, at home; two brothers, Eugene
and William, both of Lake Ariel; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a son, Brendan.

ANGELINE CANCELLERI MASSENZ
Angeline Cancelleri Massenz, 87, of Dunmore, died August 17 at Mercy
Hospital after an illness. She was the widow of Ricardo Massenz.
Born in Dunmore, daughter of the late Calogero and Maria Amorebello
Cancelleri, she attended Dunmore schools and was employed in the garment
industry, working at the Grove Silk Mill, Dunmore for several years. She
was a former resident of Union City, N.J., and Walnut, Calif., before returning
to Dunmore in 1995. She was a member of St. Anthony of Padua Church, Dunmore.
She was a loving sister and a wonderful aunt who will be missed by
all who knew her. Surviving are two brothers, Santo, Dunmore; and John,
Gouldsboro RD 1; a sister, Josephine Mancuso, Walnut Calif.; nieces, nephews
and cousins.
She was preceded in death by four brothers, Michael, James, Charles
and Salvador; and two sisters, Louise Garguilo and Nancy Guidice.

NICHOLAS PAWLICK
Nicholas Pawlick, 85, Little Falls, N.J., died August 20. His wife,
the former Anna Mae Dutko, preceded him in death. Born in Detroit, Mich.,
he lived in Little Falls most of his life. Before retirement, he worked
in the maintenance department at Mack Molding Inc., Wayne, N.J., for 26
years. He was a member of the Thunderview Rod and Gun Club, Grahamsville,
N.Y. He was a member of St. John's Russian Orthodox Church, Little Falls.
Surviving are two daughters, Gail Leonard, Easton; and Theodora Czarnecki,
Lake Ariel; four grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren. Arrangements by

MARGURITE OAKLEY WASHINE
Margurite Oakley Washine, 89, a resident of Dunmore, died unexpectedly
August 19 in Mercy Hospital. She was the wife of Blair Washine. They celebrated
their 27th wedding anniversary on Aug.11.
Born in Dunmore, daughter of the late Ray and Martha Oakley, she graduated
from Dunmore High School. She was a buyer for the former Globe Store, Scranton,
and Santarian's, Hatboro.
Also surviving are a stepson, William, Lake Ariel; two step-grandsons
and a step-granddaughter.

JOHN J. RUSIN
John J. Rusin, 68, Binghamton, N.Y., died August 20 in Barnes Kasson
Hospital, Susquehanna.
Born May 15, 1931, in Carbondale, son of the late Jacob and Joanna
Harenza Rusin, he attended grade school at Carbondale Township, graduated
from Fell Township High School and was a graduate of Mount St. Mary's College,
Emmitsburg, Md., with religious post graduate work.
Surviving are three brothers, the Rev. Joseph, St. Mary's Church, Dickson
City; Edmund, Rochester, N.Y.; and Frank, Carbondale; two sisters, Antoinette
Milesko, Waxhaw, N.C.; and Amy Libby, Gouldsboro.
He was also preceded in death by two brothers, James and Ben; and two
sisters, Ann Rusin and Mary Unis.

JAMES G. KANE
James G. Kane, 72, Jessup, died August 22 at home after an illness.
His wife is the former Mable Johnson. The couple celebrated 42 years of
marriage in June.
Born in Jessup, son of the late James G. Sr. and Alice Loftus Kane,
he attended Jessup schools and was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Church,
Archbald. He served in the Navy during World War II, and the Marine Corps
during the Korean War, in which he was awarded a Purple Heart. He was a
security guard at Marywood University. Prior to retirement, he worked at
the Trane Co., Dunmore.
Surviving are three daughters, Dianne Andrews and Alice Houlihan, both
of Archbald, and Susan Andrews, Jessup; two sisters, Anna Rotell and Marie
Murphy, both of Archbald; five brothers, Jack, Lake Ariel; Joseph and Robert,
both of Jessup; Gerard, Clarks Summit; and Marty, Archbald; five grandsons;
two granddaughters; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Frank in June.

JOHN A. PETRONE
John A. Petrone Jr., 56, Childs, died August 23 at home after an illness.
His wife is the former Cecile Cianflone.
Born in Archbald, son of the late John Sr. and Julia Fielh Petrone,
he resided in Childs for the past 28 years. A member of Sacred Heart of
Mary Church, Jermyn. Before his illness, he was employed by the Hillier
Engineering and Technologies in Montage. He held memberships in the Meredith
Hose Company and the Carbondale Township Planning Commission.
He was and avid bowler, hunter, motorcyclist, musician and handyman.
He enjoyed life to the fullest with his family and friends, was loved by
all, and will be sadly missed by those who shared his wonderful life.
Surviving are two daughters, Lisa Bandru, Carbondale, and Lori Childs,
Ambler; two brothers, Anthony, Woodstock, N.Y., and James, Hyde Park, N.Y.;
four sisters, Anna Mae Marchelitis, Archbald; Delores Casper, South Canaan;
Shirley Monie, Winton; and Marie Lapkoski, Bridgewater, N.J.; two grandchildren;
several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Elizabeth Sansenbach and Joan

ROBERT C. FUEGLEIN
Robert C. Fueglein, 80, Cayuga Village, N.Y., died August 21 at home
after a three year illness. His wife, the former Eva Moon, died in 1976.
Born Aug. 26, 1919 in Hollisterville, son of the late Charles and Frances
Chedster Fueglein, he was a graduate of Moscow High School, where he received
many oratory awards.
Before moving to Niagara Falls in 1955, he owned and operated a farm
in Pennsylvania. Prior to retirement, he had been employed as a band roll
operator for the Continental Can Co., Tonawanda, N.Y. He also had been
employed by the International Paper Co.
He was a deputy grand master of the Odd Fellows Southern District of
Wayne County in 1953. During the 1970s, he served as Scoutmaster of Boy
Scout Troop 884, St. James United Methodist Church.
He loved to sing, especially Eddie Arnold songs. He also loved yodeling,
square dance calling, and growing plants. His specialty in the latter was
African violets, for which he won a number of awards.
He was an avid trout fisherman and hunter. He enjoyed his grandchildren
and great-grandchildren, for whom he was a storyteller.
Surviving are two daughters, Sandra Rutkowski and Nona D'Agostino,
both of Niagara Falls, N.Y.; three sisters, Nettie Ridgeway, Hollisterville;
Margaret Brooks, Conklin, N.Y.; and Millecent Weed, Moscow; 11 grandchildren;
19 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Nancy Hake, and a sister, Ida

DIANE M. D ALESSANDRO
Diane M. D Alessandro, 56, Scranton, died August 14 in the Hospice
Unit of the Mid-Valley Hospital, Peckville.
Born Aug. 15, 1943, daughter of the late Charles D. and Ethel J. Wigley
Gaylets, she was raised in Old Forge before settling in Scranton 23 years
ago. She was educated in Old Forge schools and received nursing certification
at the Vo-Tech. She was a private duty practical nurse. She was a member
of the Lackawanna County Kennel Club and a breeder of Sheltie dogs.
She was a beloved mother and grandmother and a lover of animals. She
was devoted to her patients and will be missed by her family and friends.
Surviving are a son, Jeff, Scranton; a daughter, Beth Ann, Mount Cobb;
a sister, Sandra Jensen, Scranton; seven grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Lee; and a grandson.
Cremation took place at Maple Hill Cematory, Wilkes-Barre. Graveside
services were held in Fairview Memorial Park, Elmhurst, by the Rev. Kerry

FLORENCE YEDNASTY GUDIATUS
Florence Yednasty Gudiatus, formerly of Dickson City, died August 15
at the hospice unit of Mercy Hospital. She was the widow of William Gudiatus
Sr., who died in 1996.
Born in Dickson City, daughter of the late Stanley and Rose Zelazinski
Yednasty, she was a 1941 graduate of Dickson City High School. She was
employed in the area garment industry and by Hills Department Store before
retirement. She was a member of St. Joseph's Church, North Scranton.
Surviving are a son, William Jr., Scranton; a daughter, Mariann Norvilas,
Mount Cobb; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; nieces and
nephews.
She was preceded in death by four brothers, John, Edward, William and
Stanley Jr.; three sisters, Sophie, Helen and Frances and a great-grandson.

Anthony W. Wiktor, Carbondale, died August 14 at the Marian Community
Hospital, Carbondale. His wife is the former Adellaide Zaccagino. The couple
celebrated their 48th wedding anniversary April 19.
Born in Dickson City, son of the late Anthony and Catherine Stepkovitch
Wiktor, he was a member of St. Rose Church, Carbondale. He was a graduate
of Dickson City High School, and he served with the United States Army
in World War II. Prior to retirement, he was employed by the Irvington
School District, N.J.
He was a good husband, father and grandfather.
Surviving are a son, Anthony, Lake Ariel, a daughter, Lisa Walsh, East
Windsor, N.J., a brother, John, Dickson City, a grandson; nieces and nephews.

Helen Maksimowicz Dallao, formerly of Throop, died August 15 at the
Allied Long Term Care Center. She was the widow of Anthony B. Dallao, who;
died Jan. 14, 1987.
Born in Scranton, daughter of the late Frank and Bertha Szymanski Maksimowicz,
she resided in Throop most of her life. Before retirement she was employed
at Marywood College. She was a graduate of Throop High School and a member
of St. Anthony's Church, Throop, and its Altar and Rosary Society. She
was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary.
She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister
who will be missed by all who loved her.
Surviving are a daughter, Andrea Swenski, Moscow; two sisters, Sophie
Pociask, Rochester, N.Y., and Eleanor Kaminsky, Rockport, Mass.; two brothers,

SALVATORE J. SABATELLE
Salvatore J. Sabatelle, Moscow, died August 14 at Mercy Hospital after
being stricken ill at home. His widow is the former Virginia Notz. They
celebrated their 36th wedding anniversary on July 12.
Born in Dunmore, son of the late Angelo and Giovanina Pace Sabatelle,
he was a graduate of Dunmore High School and was a member of St. Catherine
of Siena Church, Moscow. He was a certified executive chef of the American
Culinary Association and attended the Culinary Institute of America, New
Haven, Conn. He served as an apprentice at the Hotel Casey and had retired
from the Keystone City Residence in 1995. He also owned Sabatelle Catering
and was a part-owner of Billy's Seafood and Steakhouse, Dunmore. He founded
the Professional Chefs Association of Northeastern Pennsylvania in 1973
and was honored as Chef of the Year in 1974. He also served as the ethics
chairman of the American Culinary Federation for 15 years.
Also surviving are a brother, Michael, Dunmore; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, William and Daniel; and three
sisters, Angeline Sabatelle, Catherine Sabatelle and Lena Possanza.

LOUIS H. CAPERELLI
Louis H. Caperelli, 90, Jessup, died August 15 at Mid-Valley Hospital.
His wife is the former Anne Yatchisin, formerly of Hyde Park. The couple
celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary Aug. 5.
Born in Arezzo, Italy, son of the late Lorenzo and Ida Chianucci Caparelli,
he moved to the United States with his family and settled in Jessup when
he was 3 years old. He was a graduate of Jessup High School, class of 1927,
a graduate of Penn State University, where he was a member of the Alpha
Delta fraternity, and he was a graduate of New York University. He also
earned credits at Bucknell University.
An army veteran of World War II, he served on the staff of the Army
Air Force Air Intelligence School, where he obtained the rank of technical
sergeant. He began his educational career as a high school teacher and
supervising principal of Jessup High School, where he also served as athletic
director. He was a prominent PIAA football official, who served on the
committee that formulated the annual Lions Club Football Dream Game.
When the Valley View School District was formed, he was appointed the
first superintendent of the jointure. He was a member of the American Association
of School administrators, the PSEA, as well as other educational associations.
For two years, he held the positions of president of Pennsylvania Association
of School Retirees. He was a member of St. Mary's Assumption Church, Jessup,
American Legion Michael Steiner Post 411 of Jessup, AARP, and the Country
Club of Scranton.
Surviving are three daughters, Carol Caperelli, Ph.D., Cincinnati,
Ohio; Nancy Spackman, Clarks Summit, and Louise White, Byfield, Mass.;
three sisters, Frieda Pacini, Fairfield, Conn., Erma Blascak, Moscow, and
Lillian Cherry, Jessup; two grandsons; several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Esther Scagliotti.

MARY JANE WHARTON
Mary Jane Wharton, 68, Moscow and Hardyton, N.J., died August 16 in
the VNA Hospice Impatient Unit at Community Medical Center.
Born in Dover, De., daughter of the late Nowell and Grace Hall Wharton,
she was a 1950 graduate of Dover High School.
She worked many years as a registered nurse after graduating from Keuka
College in 1956. She then turned toward medical education, and earned a
master's degree in human development from Farleigh Dickinson University.
When her family opened a restaurant in Cedar Grove, N.J., in 1989, she
retired from nursing and became pastry chef bringing recognition from the
New York Times for some of the best pastries in Northern New Jersey, especially
her apple crumb pies.
Her warm, caring and motherly personality led many to call her mom.
She was an extremely devoted mother and grandmother who loved the outdoors,
backpacking, writing and her freedom. She will be deeply missed by her
family.
Surviving are a sister, Patricia Preisen; a brother, Jack; three daughters,
Jane Eileen Shu, Susan Murdock and Ellen Gentle; a son, Jon Steven Shu;
and four grandchildren.

Virginia Velicka, 58, Gouldsboro, Clifton Township, died August 18
in Mercy Hospital. She was the widow of John Velicka, who died Dec., 28,
1999.
Born Dec. 6, 1941, in Elizabeth, N.J., daughter of Alice Papalis, Chicago.,
Ill., and the late Vincent Gaudiesius, she was employed as a sergeant security
guard for the Big Bass Lake Association, Gouldsboro. As a beloved wife,
mother, mother-in-law and grandmother. She will be remembered for her kindness,
generosity and understanding which she instilled in her family and everyone
she knew.
Surviving are two daughters, Charlene Byrne and Linda Esposito, both
of Elizabeth; two sisters, Dorothy Marshall, Chicago; and Vivianne Troiano,
Lyons, N.J.; five grandchildren.

Anne Murphy Baldoni, 55, Scranton, died August 18 in Wilkes-Barre General
Hospital.
Born in Dunmore, daughter of the late James T. and Lillian Conway Murphy,
she was a former member of St. Mary of Mount Carmel Church, Dunmore. She
attended Dunmore public schools and was a homemaker.
She was a loving mother, grandmother, sister and friend, who loved
to read and spend time with her family. She will be sadly missed by all
who knew her.
