Sylvan R. Bretz, 74, of Losch Road, Shermans Dale, formerly of Enola, died Sunday, Nov. 15, 1998 in Holy Spirit Hospital, Camp Hill.
He was retired from Carlisle Frog & Switch Co.; an Army veteran of World War II; a member of Wormleysburg American Legion Post 945 and Carlisle Fraternal Order of Eagles; and a volunteer for the Perry County Recreation Association.
Surviving are his wife, Betty A. Shutt Bretz; three daughters, Diane Ray Miller and Donna Fay Smith, both of Enola, and Sylvia Kay Morrow of Shermans Dale; 14 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Services were held Nov. 18 in Sullivan Funeral Home, Enola. Burial was in Stone Church Cemetery.
Raymond M. Brookhart, 73, of Liverpool RR 1 died Wednesday, Feb. 18, 1998 in Community General Osteopathic Hospital, Harrisburg.
He was a retired Liverpool Twp. farmer and had been a forest fire warden and an employee of the state Department of Transportation and Game Commission. He was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Millerstown RR 1, Liverpool Fire Company and Liverpool Ambulance League.
Surviving are his wife, T. Arlene Snyder Brookhart; three sons, Larry M. of Carlisle, Palmer E. of Fort Louden and Darvin L. of Millerstown; a daughter, R. Maxine Six of Mechanicsburg; three brothers, Harold and Alton, both of Millerstown, and Ronald of Liverpool; three sisters, Evelyn Miller of Enola, Caroline Willow of Liverpool and Mary Kay Mather of Newport; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Services were held Feb. 21 in Garman Funeral Home, Liverpool. Burial was in St. Matthew Lutheran Church Cemetery, Millerstown RR 1.

Helen B. Brownawell, 99, of Allen Drive, Shermans Dale, died Thursday, Oct. 8, 1998 in Holy Spirit Hospital, Camp Hill.
She was born Jan. 30, 1899 in Newport to the late Jacob and Minnie (Barrick) Sauserman.
She formerly was employed at the State Capital in Harrisburg as a supervisor and was a member of Incarnation United Church of Christ, Newport.
Surviving is her husband of 57 years, Harry E. Brownawell; a sister, Ruth Hope of Vienna, Va; and two great-nephews, Steven Schneberger of Vienna, Va., and Scott Schneberger of Orlando, Fla.
Services were held Oct. 11 in Ewing Brothers Funeral Home, Carlisle, with the Rev. Eric J. Shafer officiating. Burial was in Young's United Methodist Church Cemetery, Shermans Dale.
Lois J. "Lily" Bruce, 51, of E. Main Street, Hummelstown, died Saturday, March 7, 1998 in Milton S. Hershey Medical Center.
She was born in Shamokin to the late Edward and Clara (Kerstetter) Hoffman.
She was a nurse's aide at the former Odd Fellows Home, Middletown; a former clerk for the Pennsylvania Department of Revenue; and a former assembler at the Middletown Car Wash.
She is survived by her husband, Earl W. Bruce Sr.; a son, Earl W. Jr., and a daughter, Amanda Jane Bruce, both at home; a stepdaughter, Debra A. Hershey of Middletown; one brother, Edward Hoffman of Hummelstown; three step-grandchildren, Heather Lynn Fox White, Tiffany Marie Fox and James Eugene Hershey, all of Middletown; one stepgreat-grandson, Haydon Christopher White of Middletown; and one niece, Tammy Hoffman of Hummelstown.
Services were held in Trefz & Bowser Funeral Home, Hummelstown, with the Rev. Dr. Norman C. Marks officiating. Burial was in Hummelstown Cemetery.

Ethel M. Bryner, 78, of Southview Apartments, McAlisterville, died Sunday, Feb. 8, 1998 at Lewistown Hospital.
She was born June 8, 1919 in Perry County to the late Arthur and Katherine (Kunkle) Henry.
She was a member of McCoysville Presbyterian Church and Fayette EMS. She was the widow of William J. Bryner, who died Dec. 21, 1975.
Surviving are two sons, John R. of McAlisterville and William J. Jr. of Port Royal RR 1; two daughters, Kathryn Felmlee of Doylesburg and Mary Hart of Mifflin HCR 67; two brothers, Donald Henry of Hatboro and Harold Henry of Shermans Dale; six sisters, Helen Wetzler of Newport, Janet Koons of Columbia, Elizabeth Morrison of Loysville, Madeline Dunlevy of Harrisburg, Joyce MacAvoy of Camp Hill and June Weller of Erly; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Palm of Honey Grove; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; and a step-great-granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by a son, David L. Bryner on Sept. 6, 1988; a brother, sister, two grandchildren and a great-granddaughter. Services were held Feb. 12 in Henry Funeral Home, Honey Grove, with pastor John Walters officiating. Burial was in East Waterford Cemetery.

James F. Buffenmyer, 54, of Pleasant View Terrace, New Cumberland, died Monday, April 13, 1998 at home.
He was born July 7, 1943 in Harrisburg to Nelle Henderson Buffenmyer of New Bloomfield and the late Luke H. Buffenmyer.
He retired from Conewago Valley and West Shore school districts as a vocal teacher, was owner of Brushrun Sound Co. and a retired school bus driver for Rohrer Bus Co., Duncannon.
He was a member of First Lutheran Church, New Oxford; and past member of Chamber Singers of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania State Education Association, Pennsylvania Music Educators Association and American Choral Directors Association; and a graduate of Newport High School in 1961 and Gettysburg College in 1966.
Surviving are his fiancee, Carole A. Gallagher of Harrisburg; his former wife, Linda S. Buffenmyer of Hanover; and two sisters, Suzanne B. Beamer of Newport and Noelle B. Kline of East Berlin.
Services were held April 17 in St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Newport, with the Rev. Edward M. Andrews Jr. officiating. Burial was in Newport Cemetery.
Myers Funeral Home, Newport, handled arrangements.

Nelle H. Buffenmyer, 84, formerly of Third Street, Newport, died Tuesday, April 21, 1998 in Perry Village Nursing Home, New Bloomfield.
She was born Feb. 19, 1914 in Newport to the late Curtis and Bessie (Peters) Henderson.
S he was a former medical secretary for the Newport School District; a former board member of Newport Public Library; a former Girl Scout leader; a member and former Sunday school teacher of St. Paul Lutheran Church; and a member of the Newport Civic Club and Retired Senior Volunteer Program.
She was the widow of Luke H. Buffenmyer.
Surviving are two daughters, Suzanne B. Beamer of Newport and Noelle B. Kline of East Berlin; two sisters, Margaret Gladfelter of Harrisburg and Grace Shuller of Bedford; and five grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, James F., who died April 13, 1998.
Services were held April 24 in her church with the Rev. Arthur Steckel officiating. Burial was in Newport Cemetery.

Woodrow W. Bupp, 79, of Elliottsburg RR 1 died Friday, May 22, 1998 at home.
He was born April 22, 1919 in Centre Twp. to the late Chauncey and Charlotte (Baer) Bupp.
He retired from the Youth Development Center, Loysville, and had worked for Hair Bros., New Bloomfield, and the former Pennsylvania Railroad; and was an Army veteran of World War II.
Surviving are his wife, Pauline Bressler Bupp; two sons, Carl E. Sr. of Newport and Edwin C. of Landisburg; three daughters, Virginia Bigham of Harrisburg, and Paula Armstrong and Vicky Hoffman, both of Carlisle; 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Private services were held in Boyer Funeral Home, New Bloomfield, with the Rev. Anthony C. Hill officiating. Burial was in Bloomfield Cemetery.
