Ivan B. "Sam" Bitting, 61, of Newport died Wednesday, July 4, 2001 at home.
He was born Oct. 28, 1939 in Newport to the late Leaman and Ethel N. (Murphy) Bitting.
He was the owner and operator of Bittings in Newport; governor of Newport Loyal Order of Moose 1562, where he achieved the Pilgrim of Merit Degree in 1993; a member of Millerstown Moose 925, Newport Social Order of Owls and Newport Lions Club; and a lifetime member of Newport Fire Company.
Surviving are his wife, Connie L. Bitting; a son, Charles H. Bitting, and two daughters, Kaye Y. Bitting and Michelle L. Bitting, all of Newport; a brother, Park of Sunbury; a sister, Janice M. Howell of Newport; and five grandchildren, Jason, Ryan, Alisha, Zachery and Nicole.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Sally Snyder.
Services were held July 7 in Myers Funeral Home, Newport, with the Revs. Paul Case and Philip Brenizer officiating. Burial was in Pine Grove Cemetery.

Della L. Black, 87, of Waterfall, Pa., died Sunday, Aug. 19, 2001 in Perry Village Nursing Home, New Bloomfield.
She was born March 27, 1914 at New Grenada, Pa., to the late William and Viola (Sipes) Shaw.
She had helped on her family's farm prior to owning and operating Black's Freeze, Three Springs, along with her husband; attended Center United Methodist Church, Waterfall RR; and enjoyed crocheting, knitting and traveling.
She was the widow of Ralph Lorraine Black, who died Dec. 21, 1991.
Surviving are a son, Curtis of Millerstown; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandson.
She was preceded in death by a son, Donald; four brothers; two sisters; a half-brother; and two half-sisters.
Services were held Aug. 22 in M.R. Brown Funeral Home, Hustontown, with the Revs. George Clippinger and James Behrens officiating. Burial was in Bethel Cemetery, New Grenada.

John Irvin Boyer, 95, of Bellview Avenue, Trenton, N.J., formerly of Duncannon, died Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2001 in Helene Fulde Memorial Hospital in Trenton.
He was born Jan. 15, 1906 in Wheatfield Twp., one of 17 children born to the late Samuel E. and Emmaretta (Stump) Boyer.
He was an Army veteran.
He was the widower of Josephine Boyer.
Surviving are two sisters, Ruth Reilly of Chesapeake, Va., and Mildred Hernansky of Dania, Fla., and several nieces and nephews.
Services were held Feb. 17 in Boyer Funeral Home, Duncannon. Burial was in Hill Cemetery, Watts Twp.
M. Louise Boyer, 82, of Loysville RR 2 died Tuesday, May 15, 2001 in Perry Village Nursing Home, New Bloomfield.
She was born Oct. 5, 1918 at Landisburg RR 1 to the late Joseph D. and Edith G. (Gutshall) Bousum.
She was a member of the Blain Fire Company Auxiliary, Blain Ambulance Club and Williams Grove Historical Steam Engine Association; a cat fancier; and enjoyed gardening and flowers.
She was the widow of Harry F. Boyer.
Surviving are a daughter, G. Louise Peck of Loysville RR 2; three grandsons; and three great-grandchildren.
Services were held May 19 in Nickel Funeral Home, Loysville, with the Rev. Rick D. Schoenly officiating. Burial was in Mount Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery, Landisburg RR 1.
George L. Brightbill, 70, of N. High Street, Duncannon, died Sunday, July 8, 2001 in Harrisburg Hospital.
He was born March 28, 1931 in Duncannon to the late Herbert B. and Sarah (Sheaffer) Brightbill.
He was a retired mechanic from Forrer Dodge, Duncannon, and enjoyed fishing and hunting.
Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Barrick Brightbill; a son, Randy, a daughter, Cheryl L. Jones, and a sister, Mary E. Barninger, all of Duncannon; and two grandsons.
Graveside services with the Rev. Rick Hanshaw officiating will be held at the family's convenience in Union Cemetery.
Smith Funeral Home, Duncannon, is handling arrangements.

Francis A. Brown, 79, of the Thornwald Home, Carlisle, died Monday, April 9, 2001 in Carlisle Hospital.
He was born Dec. 12, 1921 in Crestline, Ohio, to the late Edwin A. and Blanche (Porterfield) Brown.
He retired from Linglestown Junior High School as an industrial arts teacher after 34 years of teaching; was a 1941 graduate of Withrow High School, Cincinnati, Ohio, 1945 graduate of Bowling Green (Ohio) University, and earned a master's degree in industrial arts from Trenton (Pa.) State University; attended Carlisle Friends Meeting; active in Boy Scouts; and was a member of Ickesburg Lions Club.
Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Edith F. Farley Brown of Carlisle; two sons, Timothy F. of Canisteo, N.Y., and Thomas A. of Williamsport; two daughters, Deborah B. Hammack of Binghamton, N.Y., and Pamela B. Gibney of Ann Arbor, Mich.; a sister, Mary Hines, and a brother, Robert, both of Berea, Ohio; and eight grandchildren.
Services were held April 14 in Thornwald Home chapel with Fred Baldwin officiating.
Ewing Brothers Funeral Home, Carlisle, handled arrangements.

William L. Bupp, 66, of East Manchester Twp., died Thursday, Feb. 15, 2001 at home.
He was born March 26, 1934 in York County to the late Paul and Ethel (Plowman) Bupp.
He worked for 26 years for the Dover Twp. Waste Treatment Center, retiring in 1996, and worked for the Mount Wolf Borough Waste Treatment Center for 15 years; was a Marine Corps veteran; and a member of James A. Danner VFW Post 537 in Etters, and the Wago Club and Liberty Club in North York.
He was the widower of Beatrice E. Emig Bupp, who died November 14, 1997.
Surviving are a son, Larry R. of York Haven; three daughters, Beverly A. Shenberger of Airville, Christine M. Lentz of York Haven and Holly A. Bupp of Thomasville; three brothers, Ralph of York Haven; Glenn of Red Lion and Donald of York; two sisters, Charlotte Bievenour of York and Evelyn Cutler of Stewartstown; and eight grandchildren.
Services were held Feb. 19 in Diehl Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Mount Wolf, with the Rev. Charles Pugh officiating. Burial, with military honors, was in Hoover's Cemetery.

Terry L. Burd of New Cumberland died Saturday, April 7, 2001 at University Hospital, Baltimore, Md.
She was born Aug. 3, 1942 in Harrisburg to the late Kenneth A. and Evelyn L. (Fortney) Shepley.
She was a registered nurse; a 1963 graduate of the Polyclinic Hospital School of Nursing; and a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ, Mechanicsburg.
Surviving are a daughter, Laurie J. Mowery of Mechanicsburg, and three grandsons, Devon, Kyle and Michael Mowery.
Services were held April 11 in her church with the Rev. Dr. Thomas E. Herrold officiating. Burial was in St. John's Cemetery, Camp Hill.
