LEROY E. SHUMAN
Leroy Shuman, 85, of Newport RR 2, Juniata Twp., died Monday, Feb. 26, 2001 at home.
He was born Sept. 8, 1915 in Tuscarora Twp. to the late George and Martha (Light) Shuman.
He was a self-employed carpenter and farmer and a member of Newport Lodge 381 F&AM.
He was the widower of Irene E. Shuman.
Surviving are a son, Richard E. of Newport RR 2; two daughters, Patricia A. of San Francisco, Calif., and Sandra A. of Philadelphia; a sister, Martha J. Doughten of Shermans Dale; two grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
Services were held March 3 in Boyer Funeral Home, New Bloomfield. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Millersburg.
Memorial contributions may be made to American Heart Association, Southcentral Pennsylvania Chapter, 1517 Cedar Cliff Drive, Camp Hill 17011.

Laura V. Shady
Laura V. Shady, 87, of Huggins Road, Duncannon, died Monday, June 25, 2001 at Holy Spirit Hospital, Camp Hill.
She was born Aug. 9, 1913 in Phillipsburg to the late Frank and Hannah Newman.
She worked as a laborer for Sylvania Factory and Duncannon Dress Factory; was a member of New Buffalo Alliance Church; and an avid gardener.
She was the widow of LeRoy R. Shady, who preceded her in death in 1985.
Surviving are a son, Jared Shady of Henniker, N.H.; a daughter, Barbara Simcox of Newport; 6 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by four brothers, two sisters and one grandson.
Graveside services were held June 30 at Rest Haven Memorial Park with the Rev. David Gouak officiating.
Helt Hanna Kline Funeral Home handled arrangements.
Memorial contributions may be made to New Buffalo Alliance Church in her memory, through Helt Hanna Kline Funeral Home, 232 Hogan Blvd., Mill Hall, 17751.

MERVIN F. SHUMAN
Mervin F. Shuman, 86, of E. Plum Street, Elizabethtown, died Monday, July 2, 2001 at home.
He was born in Blain and raised by his grandparents, Daniel Gutshall and Margaret Jane Stambaugh Shuman.
He was an aircraft and engine mechanic for 31 years, having worked for the U.S. Civil Service, Department of the Air Force at the former Olmsted Air Force Base for 24 years. After its closing, he was transferred to Warner Robbins Air Force Base in Georgia for one year and then to Langley Air Force Base in Hampton, Va., for five years before retiring in 1971. He then worked for Doubleday Book Club in Middletown for five years and the former Schock Presbyterian Home in Mount Joy for six years.
He was a 1934 graduate of Blain High School; a member of First Presbyterian Church, Mount Joy, for 30 years, where he served as a deacon and elder and was a member of the adult Sunday school class and known for his knowledge of the Bible and used as a resource for many classes; a lifetime member of Milton Grove Sportsman Club and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees; and enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Surviving are his wife of 40 years, Margaret A. Goldsmith Shuman; two daughters, Barbara Ann Schwanger of Lilly and Sarah Jane Christopherson of Navarre, Fla.; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandson.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Betty Lou Shuman; a son, Frederick Daniel; and a grandson, Charles Schwanger.
Services were held July 6 in Sheetz Funeral Home, Mount Joy, with the Rev. W. Thomas Dodge officiating. Burial was in Mount Joy Cemetery.

MARIE L. SMITH
Marie L. Smith, 92, of Bethany Village, Mechanicsburg, died Tuesday, May 22, 2001 in the village.
She was born Dec. 6, 1908 in New Germantown to the late Vernon and Gertrude (Smith) Snyder.
She retired as a teacher from the South Middleton School District; was a graduate of Blain High School and the former Pennsylvania State College; and a member of Grace United Methodist Church, Carlisle, and the Cumberland County Retired Teachers Association.
She was the widow of George W. Smith.
Surviving are two sons, Kenneth G. of Mechanicsburg and Fred W. of Rochester, N.Y.; a brother, R. Gene of Blain; five grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and five stepgreat-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Harold Smith.
Services were held May 29 in Hoffman-Roth Funeral Home, Carlisle, with the Rev. Eric J. Shafer officiating. Burial was in Blain Cemetery.

MILDRED M. SCHMIDT
Mildred M. Schmidt, 84, formerly of Harrisburg, died Wednesday, March 7, 2001 in ManorCare Health Services, Camp Hill.
She was born March 29, 1916 in Mifflintown to the late William and Mabel (Wright) Switzer.
She had been owner/operator of the former Mildred's Beauty Shop and was a member of Camp Hill United Methodist Church.
She was the widow of Max Schmidt.
Surviving are a son, William H. Shillingsford of Harrisburg; three brothers, Frank Switzer of Port Allegany, Robert Switzer of Mifflintown and Joseph Switzer of Newport; six sisters, Ardith Yeisley, Leone Potter and Betty Carter, all of Mifflintown, Jane Street of Juniata County, Lois Harris of Walnut and Shirley Houtz of Chambersburg; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services were held March 10 in Myers Funeral Home, Newport, with the Rev. John F. Overman officiating. Burial was in Rolling Green Memorial Park, Camp Hill.
Memorial contributions may be made to her church, 417 S. 22nd St., Camp Hill 17011.

MARTHA SMITH
Martha "Marty" Smith, 67, of Manchester died Friday, April 20, 2001 at home.
She was a waitress at various restaurants.
Surviving are her husband, Wilmer Smith of Manchester; a son James Williams of Manchester; a stepson, Dutch Smith of Georgia; and a stepdaughter, Judy Diehl of Shermans Dale.
Services were held April 23 in Dover.
Diehl's Funeral Home handled arrangements.

MATTHEW S. SHOPE
Matthew S. Shope, 18, of Red Barberry Drive, Newberry Twp., York County, died Tuesday, May 22, 2001 at home.
He was born Dec. 22, 1982 in Harrisburg.
He was employed by McDonald's in Etters and was a 2000 graduate of Greenwood High School, Millerstown.
Surviving are his parents, Maynard Shope of Liverpool RR 1 and Linda Willi Shope of Liverpool; a brother, Maynard Jr. of McAlisterville; four sisters, Sandy Adams of Manhatten, Kan., Vickey Soder of Liverpool, Natalie Shope of Thompsontown and Stephanie Moore of Etters; and his maternal grandparents, Herman and Gladys Willi of Liverpool.
Services were held May 26 in Garman Funeral Home, Liverpool, with the Rev. Robert Gray officiating. Burial was in St. John's (Barner's) Cemetery, Liverpool RR 1.

OLIVE M. SWANSON
Olive M. Swanson, 97, of Red Oak died Friday, Feb. 16, 2001 in Montgomery County Memorial Hospital.
She was born Dec. 17, 1903 in Shermans Dale to the late Charles and Rosie (Shearer) Smee.
She was a schoolteacher in Montgomery County country schools; worked for many years at Gambles Store and later at the Thomas D. Murphy Company, retiring after 25 years of service; and a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church and its Ladies Aid and the 15-20 year club at Murphy Calender Company.
She was the widow of Lester Swanson.
Surviving are a sister, Anna Pearl Hockenberry of Shermans Dale, and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Stanley Smee, and two sisters, Mary Florence Evans and Grace Hurley.
Services were held Feb. 20 in Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Myron Meyer officiating. Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to her church or Montgomery County Memorial Hospital Foundation.

PAUL J. SHIELDS
Paul J. Shields, 79, of Mechan-icsburg died Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001 in Harrisburg Hospital.
He was born May 18, 1922 in Grundy Cener, Iowa, to the late William A. and Hannah (Zim-merman) Shields.
He retired from Sohio Pipeline, Woodbury, N.J., and had worked at the former New Cumberland Army Depot; was an Army veteran of World War II; and a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Mechanicsburg.
Surviving are his wife, Marietta Milligan Shields of Mechanicsburg; a son, Randall A. of Baltimore; and two grandchildren.
Services were held Oct. 15 in St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Loysville RR 1, with the Rev. Julia Ann Hart officiating. Burial was in the church Cemetery.
Nickel Funeral Home, Loysville, handled arrangements.
Memorial contributions may be made to American Heart Association, 1517 Cedar Cliff Drive, Camp Hill 17011.
