He is survived by his daughter Janie, wife of William H. Boger, Meyersdale; and granddaughter, Rebecca J. Boger, State College, Pa.
Mr. Shumaker was a member of the Amity United Church of Christ, Meyersdale. He also was a member of Meyersdale Lodge No. 554 F & AM; Hebron Royal Arch Chapter No. 272, Meyserdale; Scottish Rite Consistory, Harrisburg; Jaffa Temple, Altoona; BPOE Lodge 1951, Meyersdale; and American Legion Post 112, Meyersdale.
Friends will be received at the Price Funeral Home, Meyersdale, Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home Wednesday at 11 a.m. with Pastor Bruce Ashlock officiating.
Interment will be in the Union Cemetery, Meyersdale.
Memorials may take the form of contributions to the Meyersdale Medical Center, Meyersdale, PA 15552.
BLANCHE I. SIPPLE
She is survived by a sister, Rosella (Sipple) Niner, Salisbury, Pa.; two brothers, Paul Sipple and wife Etta, Doylestown, Pa., and Nyle Sipple and wife Lena, Grantsville, Md.; a niece, Sherlda (Sipple) Jenkins, Waterford, Mich.; four nephews, Marvin Cecil and wife Gloria, Akron, Ohio, Edgar Niner and wife Elizabeth, Ormond Beach, Fla., Alvin Niner Jr. and wife Leona, Grantsville, Md., and Robert Bittinger and wife Sue, Grantsville, Md.; also several great-nieces and great-nephews.
She graduated from Salisbury High School, in the Class of 1930, from Nurses Training at Church Home and Infirmary, Baltimore, Md., Medical Field Service School and Nursing Administration, San Antonio, Texas, and attended Dickinson College, Carlisle, Pa.
She joined the Army Nurse Corps on July 1, 1941, before Pearl Harbor, from which she retired after 27 years with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. She served in Germany during post-World War II, in Japan during the Korean War and also at many posts throughout the United States. Her main mission in life was to care for the young men and women wounded while fighting for our freedoms, either to nurse them back to health or help to make life more meaningful for them.
She was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ, Phoenixville, the Women's Guild of that church, Army Nurse Corps Association for Retired Members, Local Retired Officer's Association, American Legion and AARP.
At Blanche's request, there will be no viewing. Private funeral services will be held at the Newman Funeral Homes, P.A., Grantsville, Md., on Tuesday, March 30, at 2 p.m. conducted by the Rev. David Fetter, assisted by the Rev. Raymond Brown. Interment will follow at Salisbury Cemetery, with military rites provided by Salisbury area veteran's service organizations.
M. CHARLENE SMITH
Mrs. Smith was employed as a licensed practical nurse at the Valley View Nursing Home in Berkeley Springs, W.Va. She was a member of the Fairview Christian Church, Inglesmith, Pa., and one of the greatest loves of her life was breeding and raising Great Danes.
Surviving are her husband, Calvin L. Smith; two sons, Chief Warrant Officer Richard Vince Powell, Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., and Valentine "Val" Phillips, Baltimore; two daughters, Pamela Blade, Arbutus, Md., and Terresa Traczinka, Conowingo, Md.; two stepsons, Brian L. Smith, Keyser, W.Va., and Todd A. Smith, Abbottstown, Pa.; one brother, Joseph Minnich, Baltimore; one sister, Paula Schwartz, Rockford, Ill.; six grandchildren; one great-grandson; and three step-grandchildren.
Friends may call at the Rotruck-Smith Funeral Home, Keyser, W.Va., on Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m., and at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, Cumberland, Md., on Friday from 4 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Fairview Christian Church, Inglesmith, Pa., on Saturday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Merle Horton and the Rev. Milton Morris officiating. Friends also may call at the church on Saturday from 11 a.m. until service time.
Interment will be in the Fairview Cemetery, Inglesmith.
The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the Fairview Christian Church, c/o Leo Jay, Treasurer, Route 1, Box 116, Artemas, PA 17211.
JAMES S. SMITH
Born May 3, 1917, at Artemas, he was a son of the late Aquilla and Eveline (Barnes) Smith. He also was preceded in death by a son, Charles L. Smith; and a granddaughter, Lora Smith.
Mr. Smith was retired as a crane operator and fitter with Westinghouse Corp., Sharon, with 35 years of service. He was an avid hunter and sportsman.
Surviving are his wife, Mary J. (Smith) Smith; five sons, Robert A. Smith and Dewayne J. Smith, both of Greenville, Ronald B. Smith and Daryl L. Smith, both of Transfer, and Michael T. Smith, Greenville; five daughters, Kathy Shoults, Phoenix, Evelyn Craig, Baton Rouge, La., Elaine Jacobson, Transfer, Jamie Moore, Greenville, and Karen Palmer, West Virginia; two brothers, Alva Smith, Angola, N.Y., and Leo Smith, Sharpsville; 17 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Fairview Christian Church, Inglesmith, on Saturday at 2 p.m. The family will receive friends at the church on Saturday from noon until the hour of the service.
Interment will be in the Fairview Cemetery.
The Smith Funeral Home, Keyser, W.Va., is in charge of arrangements.
ANNA SALONISH
Mrs. Salonish is survived by a son, Pete R. Salonish and wife, Maryann, Ridgeley, W.Va.; a daughter, Dorothy Ward, Hyndman; three brothers, John Simmons, Pittsburgh; George Simmons, McDonaldton, and Paul Simmons, Berlin; two sisters, Stella Arscott and Eva Simmons, both of Baltimore, Md.; 10 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
An American Red Cross Volunteer during World War II, Mrs. Salonish was also a member of Central City Ladies Auxiliary, V.F.W., the American Legion, and the Sky High Club. She was also a member of SS. Peter and Paul Greek Orthodox Catholic Church, Central City.
Friends will be received at the Harvey H. Zeigler Funeral Home, Hyndman, on Wednesday, April 21, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., and on Thursday, April 22, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at SS. Peter and Paul Greek Orthodox Catholic Church, Central City.
Funeral services will be conducted at the church on Thursday, April 22, at 10:30 a.m. with Father Charles Kovacks officiating.
Interment will be in the Parish Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Building Fund at SS. Peter and Paul Greek Orthodox Catholic Church, Central City.
ARDELIA D. THARP
Mrs. Tharp is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Mildred ``Mickey'' Smith, wife of William, Hyndman, Mrs. Helen Turner, wife of Sam, Manns Choice, Mrs. Shirley Robinson, wife of Robbie, Cumberland, Md., and Mrs. Eleanor Waugerman, wife of Harry, Buffalo Mills; two sisters, Mrs. Mildred Kline, Cumberland, and Mrs. Nellie DeVore, Everett; 13 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Tharp was a homemaker and a member of the Bedford Springs #41 Order of the Eastern Star.
Friends will be received at the Harvey H. Zeigler Funeral Home, Hyndman, on Sunday, March 28, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Monday, March 29, at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Leroy Logsdon and the Rev. Julie Applegate officiating.
Interment will be in the Hyndman Cemetery, Hyndman.
The Order of the Eastern Star service will be held at the funeral home on Sunday, March 28, at 3 p.m.
