Born June 30, 1926, in Hancock, he was the son of the late Earl Dewey and Annie Elizabeth Exline Bowman.
He was a farmer; a construction worker; and had been employed by Marvania Orchards in Hancock.
He served in the U.S. Army in Korea.
He was a Protestant.
He is survived by his wife, A. Jane Miller Bowman whom he married
Dec. 27, 1952; four daughters, Debra Bollman and Tina Clippinger of Warfordsburg, Janet Mills of Clearville, Pa., and Jayne Schultz of Berkeley Springs, W.Va.; five sons, Melvin Bowman of Mercersburg, Pa., Elmer G. Bowman Jr. of Warfordsburg, Gary Bowman of Fort Louden, Pa., Bobby Bowman and John Bowman of Needmore, Pa.; three sisters, Ruth Young of Martinsburg, W.Va., Ethel Barnhart and Anna Wade of Williamsport; a brother, Earl Kenny Bowman of Hancock; 29 grandchildren; 14 stepgrandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and 14 stepgreat-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a granddaughter.
Services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 141 W. Main St. in Hancock. The Rev. Ralph Kunkle will officiate. Burial will be in Tonoloway Primitive Baptist Cemetery on Thompson Road in Needmore, with military honors by Tri-State Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home, which will be open from 3 p.m.
Vera L. Barkdoll
GREENCASTLE, Pa. - Vera L. Grosh Barkdoll, 71, of 216 N. Carlisle St., Cemetery-obituaries?utm_source=partner_genlookups&utm_medium=partner&utm_campaign=genlookups_July21_textlink&tr_ad_group=textlinks&tr_funnel=supersearch" target="_blank">died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2000, at Waynesboro (Pa.) Hospital.
Born Oct. 1, 1928, in Elbrook, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Reuben and Annie Etter Grosh.
She attended the former Shady Grove School. She was a 1946 graduate of Greencastle High School.
She had worked at the Stanley Co. in Chambersburg, Pa.; and for Greencastle-Antrim School District as a reading and classroom aid. She aassisted her husband in operating Barkdoll's Quality Market formerly in Greencastle.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Greencastle, taught a children's Sunday school class and was Children's Sunday school superintendent.
She was a member of Greencastle-Antrim Lioness Club; Greencastle-Antrim Loyal Daughters; past president and member of Greencastle-Antrim Senior Women's Club; and a member of Greencastle T.O.P.S. Club.
She was a former Cub Scout den mother and was on the former Greencastle Little League Ladies Auxiliary. She helped organize Old Shady Grove School Reunion; participated in Greencastle Old Home Week pageants and helped her husband in the Jerome R. King Playground Association and with Greencastle Athletics baseball team.
She is survived by her husband, Charles E. "Whitey" Barkdoll, whom she married
June 27, 1948; a daughter, Joi L. Barkdoll-Pflugh of Wasilla, Ala.; three sons, Lon E. Barkdoll, Vic E. Barkdoll and Tod E. Barkdoll, all of Greencastle; and four grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Floyd Etter.
Services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 45 N. Washington St. in Greencastle. Pastor Stacy Crawford will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery in Greencastle.
The family will receive friends Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. at Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, 45 S. Carlisle St. in Greencastle.

Carl E. DeShong
McCONNELLSBURG, Pa. - Carl E. Born April 23, 1921, in Licking Creek, Pa., he was the son of the late Dick and Ethel Mae DeShong DeShong.
He retired from the Fulton County Courthouse Maintenance Department.
He was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church in Harrisonville, Pa.
A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Army.
He was a member of VFW Post 655 of McConnellsburg.
He is survived by his wife, Rosalie Mellott DeShong, whom he married
June 26, 1943; two sons, Gerald N. DeShong of McConnellsburg and Nelson E. DeShong of Collegeville, Pa.; two sisters, Dollie Mae Miller and Betty Witmer, both of Greencastle, Pa.; three brothers, Elmer DeShong and Dale DeShong, both of Greencastle, and John DeShong of Mercersburg, Pa.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister; and two brothers.
Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Asbury United Methodist Church in Harrisonville. Pastor Charles Gummo will officiate. Burial will be in Asbury United Methodist Cemetery with military services by Fulton Honor Guard.
Visitation will be Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. at Sipes Funeral Home in Harrisonville.
Laura E. Stine

Born June 6, 1916, in Newville, Pa., she was the daughter of the late John and Laura Nehf.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert E. Stine.
She was a member of Park Avenue United Methodist Church in Chambersburg, and sang in the choir.
She volunteered at Chambersburg Hospital; South Mountain Restoration Center; and Piney Mountain Restoration Center; and was a member of AARP.
She is survived by two daughters, Elaine E. Swanger of Chambersburg and Roberta Beecher of Newville; a son, Garry E. Stine of Chambersburg; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Ginger Lee Forbes; and a sister, Edith Hollar.
Services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Park Avenue United Methodist Church, 125 Park Ave. in Chambersburg. The Rev. Robert Taylor will officiate. Burial will be in Lincoln Cemetery in Chambersburg.
The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Robert G. Sellers Funeral Home, 297 Philadelphia Ave. in Chambersburg. Visitation also will be Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at the church.

Born Feb. 4, 1927, in New Kensington, Pa., he was the son of the late George and Mildred Cook McElwain.
He was a 1945 graduate of St. James School; and a 1951 graduate of Montana University in Missoula, Mont.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
He is survived by his wife, Myrna L. McElwain; three daughters, Susan C. McKinney of Kirkland, Wash., Anne L. Scott of Kelso, Wash., and Mary B. Ersberger of Kalispell, Mont.; three sons, James K. McElwain of Bradenton, Fla., Lawrence G. McElwain of Granite Bay, Calif., and Michael McElwain of San Francisco; a sister, Mary M. Black of Hagerstown; and 11 grandchildren.
Arrangements are by Thornhill Valley Funeral Home in Spokane.

She was a seamstress employed by Sagner Clothing Manufacturing; and by Waynesboro Knitting Co. She served as a caregiver for senior citizens in the community; and was a homemaker.
She was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church in Harrisonville and United Methodist Church Women.
She was a member of Green Hill Sewing Club.
She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Roy R. Kline; a son, David R. Kline of Harrisonville; a sister, Evelyn Zentmyer of Chambersburg, Pa.; and three brothers, Dean Black of Seattle, Wash., Wayne Black and Luther Black Jr., both of Chambersburg.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Mamie McCleaster and Gladys Flory; and a brother, Harold Black.
Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Kelso-Cornelius Funeral Home, 322 N. Second St. in McConnellsburg, Pa. The Rev. Charles Gummo will officiate. Burial will be in Asbury United Methodist Cemetery.
The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. and Friday at 10 a.m. at the funeral home. The funeral home will be open today from 2 p.m.
