WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Omar D. Born June 12, 1916, in Downsville, he was the son of the late Harry and Ena Dorsey Welch.

He farmed in Sharpsburg and Clear Spring and later in the Mercersburg, Pa., area.

He was a member of Glen Forney Assembly of God Church of Waynesboro.

He is survived by a son, Leon R. Welch of Hagerstown; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and cousins.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Lininger-Fries Funeral Home, Inc., 47 N. Park Ave., Mercersburg. The Rev. Neville H. West will officiate. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Mercersburg.

Viewing will be on Tuesday from 7 to 8 p.m. in the funeral home and one hour prior to the services on Wednesday.

James A. Kerns

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - James Andrew Kerns, 71, of Waynesboro, Cemetery-obituaries?utm_source=partner_genlookups&utm_medium=partner&utm_campaign=genlookups_July21_textlink&tr_ad_group=textlinks&tr_funnel=supersearch" target="_blank">died Saturday, Jan. 1, 2000, at Carroll County Hospital in Westminster, Md.

Born April 27, 1928, in Morgan County, W.Va., he was the son of the late John Winfred and Grace Pearl Hovermale Kerns.

He was a 1945 graduate of Berkeley Springs (W.Va.) High School and earned a bachelor of science degree in chemistry from Shepherd College in 1951. He also attended the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor.

He retired from Boeing Aircraft in Philadelphia, where he had worked as a chemist.

He served in the U.S. Navy during the mid-1940s.

He attended Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church in Berkeley Springs.

He was a volunteer at Senior Citizens Center in Waynesboro and was a member of Potomac Lodge 100 AF&AM in Cumberland, Md.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Catherine Louise Jones Kerns; two daughters, Nancy E. Amsel of Demarest, N.J., and Cathy D. Thomas of Tyler, Texas; a son, James C. Kerns of Scottsdale, Ariz.; two sisters, Cathleen Grove of Martinsburg, W.Va., and Norma Ambrose of Inwood, W.Va.; seven grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Doris E. Stillson.

Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, 306 Union St., Berkeley Springs. The Rev. Hennis H. Fox will officiate. Burial with Masonic graveside rites conducted by Deford Lodge 88 AF&AM will be in Friendship Cemetery in Berkeley Springs.

The family will receive friends Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home, which will be open at 10 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Morgan County Rescue Service, P.O. Box 151, Berkeley Springs, WV 25411.

Beatrice L. Burgard

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - Beatrice L. "Betty" Burgard, 68, of 9814 Alvin Drive, Cemetery-obituaries?utm_source=partner_genlookups&utm_medium=partner&utm_campaign=genlookups_July21_textlink&tr_ad_group=textlinks&tr_funnel=supersearch" target="_blank">died Saturday, Jan. 1, 2000, at her home.

Born Oct. 1, 1931, in Edgewood, Md., she was the daughter of the late Ray H. Long Sr. and Loma Yates Long.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ronald A. "Mike" Burgard, in 1998.

She was a 1950 graduate of Shippensburg High School.

She retired from Letterkenny Army Depot in Chambersburg, Pa.

She was a member of Memorial Lutheran Church.

She was a former coach for the major and senior divisions girls softball teams of Shippensburg Little League, and a former member of the league's board of directors.

She enjoyed bowling.

She is survived by a daughter, Gerilee K. Davis of Shippensburg; a son, Michael D. Burgard of Knoxville, Tenn.; three sisters, Joan L. Kriner of Shippensburg, Loma L. Lynch of Ocala, Fla., and Irene L. Norman of Fayetteville, N.C.; two brothers, Donald H. Long of Chambersburg and Ray H. Long Jr. of Homasassa, Fla.; and five grandchildren.

Services will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home in Shippensburg. The Rev. Bonnie B. Hoffman will officiate. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery in Shippensburg.

Visitation will be Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to Memorial Lutheran Church, 34 E. Orange St., Shippensburg, PA 17257.

John H. Starr

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - John H. "Big John" Starr, 68, a resident of Falling Springs Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and formerly of 9942 Buchanan Trail West, Mercersburg, Pa., Cemetery-obituaries?utm_source=partner_genlookups&utm_medium=partner&utm_campaign=genlookups_July21_textlink&tr_ad_group=textlinks&tr_funnel=supersearch" target="_blank">died Thursday, Dec. 30, 1999, at the nursing home.

Born May 7, 1931, in Clear Spring, he was the son of the late Gilbert and Nellie Mae Timmons Starr.

He attended school in Mercersburg.

He was employed by B.C. Snyder Elevators in Mercersburg. He then became a freight conductor for Penn Central Railway (later Conrail) from 1957 until retiring in 1991. He operated a Sunoco service station on Baltimore Street in Greencastle. He also was a farmer.

He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the U.S. Army.

He was a member of Greencastle Church of God, where he was a member of Adult Sunday School Class.

He was a member of national AARP.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Louise Zeger Starr, whom he married March 24, 1957; a daughter, Carol J. Poper of Waynesboro; a son, Jay L. Starr of Mercersburg; two sisters, Ruth DeLauder and Rebecca Gordon, both of Mercersburg; five brothers, the Rev. Barton Starr, a resident of Menno Haven in Chambersburg, Junior Starr and Merle Starr, both of Greencastle, Roy Starr of Chambersburg and Joseph Starr of Fort Loudon, Pa.; a grandson; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Catherine Starr and Mildred Starr, and a brother, Scott Starr.

Services will be Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at Greencastle Church of God, 4480 Buchanan Trail West, Greencastle. The Rev. Floyd E. Myers will officiate. Burial will be in Parklawn Memorial Gardens in Chambersburg.

The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Miller-Grove Funeral Home, 521 S. Washington St. in Greencastle.

George H. Poper Sr.

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - George H. Poper Sr., 75, of 13 Mount Vernon Terrace and formerly of 14021 Buchanan Trail East, Blue Ridge Summit, Pa., Cemetery-obituaries?utm_source=partner_genlookups&utm_medium=partner&utm_campaign=genlookups_July21_textlink&tr_ad_group=textlinks&tr_funnel=supersearch" target="_blank">died Thursday, Dec. 30, 1999, at Waynesboro Hospital.

Born Sept. 6, 1924, in Greencastle, Pa., he was the son of the late Henry S. and Ethel Dale Poper.

He and his brother owned and operated a painting business in Franklin County, Pa., during the 1940s and '50s. In the early 1970s, he worked for Tom's Vending Co. in Gettysburg, Pa. From 1972 to 1984, he was employed by Grove Worldwide in the stockroom and maintenance department. He also worked as a security guard at Camp Louise in PenMar, Md., until his retirement in 1998.

He served in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1946 as a printer and photographer. He was stationed in Dam's Neck, Va., and Pensacola, Fla.

He was a member of Ringgold Church of Christ.

He is survived by his wife, Esther May Vanderau Poper, whom he married Feb. 14, 1981; two daughters, Debra I. Kramer and Denise M. Douglas, both of Greencastle; seven sons, Shawn P. Poper of Denver, Pa., Gary W. Poper of Clear Spring, George H. Poper Jr., Van Poper, Jack C. Poper and David R. Poper, all of Greencastle, and Lester L. Poper of Chambersburg, Pa.; a stepdaughter, Natalie A. Bickford of Greencastle; two stepsons, Wendell L. Bingaman and Edward J. Bingaman Jr., both of Waynesboro; a sister, Janice Barnhart of Greencastle; 13 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; 11 stepgrandchildren; eight stepgreat-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by a son, Dennis E. Poper; a stepson, Randall L. Bingaman; two sisters, Virginia M. Ernde and Peggy L. Poper; two brothers, Weldon Poper and Raymond E. Poper; a half sister, Louise Shade; and a half brother, John A. Swisher.

Services will be Tuesday at Ringgold Church of Christ, 14420 Barkdoll Road, Ringgold. The Revs. Don Conley and Richard Daughtridge will officiate. Burial will be in Parklawn Memorial Gardens in Chambersburg.

The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St. in Waynesboro.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice of the Good Shepherd, 2700 Luther Drive, Chambersburg, PA 17201.

Josephine B. Bowders

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Josephine B. Bowders, 79, of 131 Fairview Ave., Cemetery-obituaries?utm_source=partner_genlookups&utm_medium=partner&utm_campaign=genlookups_July21_textlink&tr_ad_group=textlinks&tr_funnel=supersearch" target="_blank">died Thursday, Dec. 30, 1999, at Hershey (Pa.) Medical Center.

Born March 26, 1920, in Waynesboro, she was the daughter of the late William E. and Ruth Jane Nisewander Bowders.

She was a 1937 graduate of Waynesboro High School.

She was employed as a secretary at Frick Co. in Waynesboro for 42 years, retiring in 1982. Her last position was executive secretary to the vice president of marketing.

She was a member of Calvary Assembly of God Church, played the church organ and other musical instruments, sung and directed church musicals. She taught Sunday school.

She was a member of National AARP; and Waynesboro Hospital Auxiliary, for which she volunteered.

She is survived by one brother, William Bowders of Waynesboro; nieces, nephews and cousins.

Services will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Calvary Assembly of God Church, 116 Snider Ave., Waynesboro. Pastors Dwan N. Newsome and Walter A. Stuart will officiate. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery in Waynesboro.

The family will receive friends at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro., Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m., and one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday.

The family requests the omission of flowers. Memorial donations may be made to American Cancer Society, 452 E. King St., Chambersburg, PA 17201.
