Born Jan. 21, 1908, in Pittsburgh, he was the son of the late Michael L. and Ellen Sullivan Carey.
He was a 1925 graduate of Duquesne High School, Pittsburgh. He attended St. Vincent College in Latrobe, Pa., on a football scholarship.
He was employed as a street car conductor and then a traffic dispatcher for Pittsburgh Railways. Later, he was a supervisor for the city of Pittsburgh, and the superintendent of Lands and Buildings of Pittsburgh. He retired in 1972.
He was a member of St. Andrew Roman Catholic Church, Waynesboro, Pa.
He was a member of BPO Elks; and National AARP.
He is survived by his wife, Madeline C. Cullen Carey, whom he married
Nov. 24, 1938; a daughter, Madelyn C. Brezler of Waynesboro; three sons, Dr. Bernard J. Carey Jr. of Flagstaff, Ariz., Daniel F. Carey of Sligo, Pa., and Thomas M. Carey of Woodstock, Ga.; 11 grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a son, Michael T. Carey in 1970; a sister; and five brothers.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Andrew Roman Catholic Church, 12 N. Broad St., Waynesboro. The Rev. Thomas J. Hemler will be celebrant. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Hazelwood, Pa., at the convenience of the family.
Memorial donations may be made to Quincy Benevolent Fund, P.O. Box 128, Quincy, PA 17247.
Arrangements are by Cumberland Valley Crematorium, Waynesboro.
Elizabeth C. Kauffman
QUINCY, Pa. - Elizabeth C. Kauffman, 97, of Quincy Village, Cemetery-obituaries?utm_source=partner_genlookups&utm_medium=partner&utm_campaign=genlookups_July21_textlink&tr_ad_group=textlinks&tr_funnel=supersearch" target="_blank">died Tuesday, March 23, 1999, at Quincy United Methodist Home, Quincy.
Born March 29, 1901, in Waynesboro, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Harry C. Sr. and Lila Zentmyer Criswell.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. John Kauffman, in 1992. They were married
in 1924.
She graduated from Waynesboro High School in 1919, and attended Elmira College in Elmira, N.Y. She continued her music studies in organ and piano at Wilson College, Chambersburg, Pa.
She was organist at St. Paul Reformed Church in Waynesboro; and later at Evangelical Lutheran Church, Waynesboro, where she was a member.
She is survived by a niece, Mary Jane Weagly of Waynesboro; a nephew, Harry C. Criswell III of Chambersburg; great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was preceded in death by a sister and two brothers.
Private services will be at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro. The Rev. Richard A. Seaks will officiate. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro, at the convenience of the family.
The family requests the omission of flowers.

Francis L. Oaks
MARION, Pa. - Francis L. Oaks, 75, of 5115 Main St., Cemetery-obituaries?utm_source=partner_genlookups&utm_medium=partner&utm_campaign=genlookups_July21_textlink&tr_ad_group=textlinks&tr_funnel=supersearch" target="_blank">died Wednesday, March 24, 1999, at his home.
Born Feb. 2, 1924, in Middlesburg, Md., he was the son of the late Lesher and Mary Stouffer Oaks.
He was employed as a riveter at Fairchild Aircraft in Hagerstown, retiring in 1986 after 35 years. He also worked as a painter for Wilbur Burger.
A U.S. Army veteran, he served in the Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe during World War II.
He was a Protestant.
He was a member of Marion Volunteer Fire Company; Harry D. Zeigler Post 6319 Veterans of Foreign Wars, Greencastle, Pa.; Frank Carbaugh Post 373 American Legion, Greencastle; and AMVETS Post 224, Chambersburg, Pa.
He is survived by his wife, Lucille M. Hollingshead Oaks, whom he married
June 23, 1948; three daughters, Barbara A. Carbaugh and Betty M. Faust, both of Waynesboro, Pa., and Tammy S. Shindle of Big Cove Tannery, Pa.; two sons, Michael F. Oaks of Greencastle and Thomas R. Oaks of Marion; a sister, Carol J. Spencer of Waynesboro; two brothers, Howard E. Oaks of Waynesboro and Jerrold L. Oaks of Clear Spring; 10 grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; five great-grandchildren; four stepgreat-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Glen S. Oaks.
Services will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Miller-Grove Funeral Home, 521 S. Washington St., Greencastle. The Rev. Gayle L. Ruble will officiate. Burial will be in Parklawns Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Chambersburg.
The family will receive friends Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

John L. Myers

Born Feb. 17, 1915, in St. Charles, Ill., he was the son of the late John A. and Lillian K. Kreft Myers.
He attended Clay Hill School, Clay Hill, Pa.
A retired farmer, he farmed in the Greencastle area for 36 years. He also was a self-employed carpenter for 20 years.
He was a member of Grace Brethren Church of Hagerstown, where he had served as an usher, and was a member and treasurer of Family Bible Class.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mary C. Fisher Myers; a daughter, Lois M. Wishard of Mercersburg, Pa.; a son, Glenn E. Myers of Chambersburg, Pa.; a brother, Ray E. Myers of Zullinger, Pa.; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by a half sister, Mabel Adele Jorth.
Services will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, 45 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle, Pa. The Revs. Dennis R. Brown and Robert L. Dell will officiate. Burial will be in Browns Mill Cemetery, Kauffman, Pa.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Ambrose N. Apple Sr.
WARFORDSBURG, Pa. - Ambrose Norris Apple Sr., 87, of Warfordsburg, and formerly of Cumberland, Md., Cemetery-obituaries?utm_source=partner_genlookups&utm_medium=partner&utm_campaign=genlookups_July21_textlink&tr_ad_group=textlinks&tr_funnel=supersearch" target="_blank">died Wednesday, March 24, 1999, at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland.
Born Feb. 5, 1912, in Romney, W.Va., he was the son of the late Walter and Eunice Norris Apple.
He was a 1932 graduate of Hancock High School.
He retired in 1989 from the Maryland State Highway Administration as an inspector after 33 years of service. He was formerly employed with Celenese in Cumberland for 18 years and had been a meat cutter for Harry Souders. He had worked for Andy Cohill Orchards, formerly of Hancock; and Baker Waverly Survey Co.
He was a Protestant.
He was a member of American Humane Society, National Federation of Wildlife, National Audubon Society and MCEA.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret E. Powell Apple, whom he marred Feb. 25, 1935; two daughters, Eudora Cowan of Cumberland and Norma DeWitt of Lake, Mich.; a son, Ambrose Norris Apple Jr. of Metamora, Mich.; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Lillian Marvin and Eudora Brown; and three brothers, Dwars Apple, Jessie Apple and George Apple.
Services will be Sunday at 1 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 141 W. Main St., Hancock. The Revs. Marion Nesselrodt and Ray Mallow will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Grove Christian Cemetery, Dott, Pa.
The family will receive friends today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home, which will be open from 2 to 9 p.m.
