MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Ruth E. Strait, 73, formerly of 212 N. Main St., Cemetery-obituaries?utm_source=partner_genlookups&utm_medium=partner&utm_campaign=genlookups_July21_textlink&tr_ad_group=textlinks&tr_funnel=supersearch" target="_blank">died Thursday, Dec. 10, 1998, at Genesis Elder Care, Salisbury, Md.
Born Aug. 27, 1925, in Fort Loudon, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Simon and H. Grace Mumma Ryder.
Early in life, she worked for Tuscarora School District as a cafeteria worker; as a school bus driver for the late Ralph Diehl; and for Philip's Seeds, all of Mercersburg.
She was a member of Church of God, Chincoteague, Va.
She is survived by her husband, Harry H. Strait, whom she married
Oct. 17, 1945; two daughters, Linda G. Taylor of Stockton, Md., with whom she lived for the past three and a half years and Connie E. Blair of Greencastle, Pa.; three sisters, Janet Willmert of St. Thomas, Pa., Dorothy Bryan and Betty Dorty, both of Cove Gap, Pa.; two brothers, William Ryder and Charles Ryder, both of Mercersburg; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a sister; and three brothers.
Services will be Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at Clayton Memorial Church of God, Mercersburg. The Rev. Kelly Shope will officiate. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Mercersburg.
The viewing will be Sunday one hour prior to the services at the church.
Memorial donations may be made to Child Evangelism Fellowship of Franklin County, 45 S. Broad St., Waynesboro, PA 17268.

Gladys M. Treece
FAYETTEVILLE, Pa. - Gladys M. Born Oct. 29, 1912, in Saxton, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Edmund and Flora Dorman Treece.
She was an operator with the former Bell Telephone Co. for 35 years, retiring in 1973. She started her career with the former Bell Telephone Co. working in Saxton, Pa. She then worked at the office in Huntingdon, Pa., and retired from the office in Harrisburg, Pa.
She was a member of Upper Strasburg Church of God, Upper Strasburg, Pa.
She enjoyed traveling.
She is survived by a daughter, Donna P. Minnick of Fayetteville; a sister, Elda M. Miles of Upper Strasburg, Pa.; two grandsons, Henry "Sam" Minnick Jr. of Anniston, Ala. and Dale E. Minnick of Newport, N.C.; four stepgrandchildren; and seven stepgreat-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by five brothers.
Services will be Monday at 2 p.m. at D. Ronald Long Funeral Chapel, 715 Church St., Saxton. The Rev. Caroline Smith will officiate. Burial will be in Flockers Cemetery, Saxton.
Visitation will be Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, Chambersburg; and Monday one hour prior to the services at the funeral home in Saxton.

Michael A. Kendall
CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Michael Alden Kendall, 64, of 2950 Fillmore Drive, Cemetery-obituaries?utm_source=partner_genlookups&utm_medium=partner&utm_campaign=genlookups_July21_textlink&tr_ad_group=textlinks&tr_funnel=supersearch" target="_blank">died Thursday, Dec. 10, 1998, at Carlisle Hospital, Carlisle, Pa.
Born Jan. 11, 1934, in Terre Haute, Ind., he was the son of the late David A. and Rita C. Callagee Kendall Sr.
He was a graduate of Pennsylvania Hospital School of Nursing, Philadelphia; and attended the University of Maryland; and Wilkes-Barre College, Wilkes-Barre, Pa.
He was a registered nurse with Franklin County Nursing Home, Chambersburg, retiring in August 1996. He did four years of research in mental health at the National Institute of Health and the National Institute of Mental Health, Bethesda, Md. He had been employed for 17 years as the evening shift nurse manager at South Mountain Restoration Center, South Mountain, Pa. He was then active supervisor for the Department of Nursing Homes and Hospitals D.P.W., North East Region.
He served as a hospital corpsman with the U.S. Navy during the Korean War.
He was of the Roman Catholic faith.
He was a direct descendant of John Alden, who came to America aboard the Mayflower. He was board certified by the American Nursing Association in Cerontological Nursing and Nursing Administration. He was a life member of Boy Scouts of America; he had served as a former assistant scout master with Troop 128, Chambersburg.
He is survived by his wife, Jacqueline S. McAfee Kendall, whom he married
Aug. 3, 1981; four daughters, Lisa Kendall of New York, Lynn Kendall and Libby Occhino, both of Pennsylvania and Leslie Pease of West Virginia; a stepson, Clement J. Schropp of Chambersburg; two sisters, Sally A. Kendall of Chicago and Joan A. Kendall of Fort Arthur, N.Y.; and a brother, David A. Kendall Jr. of Rockville, Md.
Services will be Monday at 11:30 a.m. in the chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg. The Rev. Daniel F. Lawler S.J. will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Gettysburg, Pa., with military graveside services conducted by members of Charles M. Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW Honor Guard.
Visitation will be Sunday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to American Cancer Society, 452 E. King St., Chambersburg, PA 17201.
Brian E. Gardner
CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Brian E. "Duke" Gardner, 36, of 2302 Jack Road, Cemetery-obituaries?utm_source=partner_genlookups&utm_medium=partner&utm_campaign=genlookups_July21_textlink&tr_ad_group=textlinks&tr_funnel=supersearch" target="_blank">died Friday, Dec. 11, 1998, at Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, Hershey, Pa., following a brief illness.
Born Nov. 9, 1962, in Chambersburg, he was the son of Ronald C. and Janet Fahnestock Gardner of Chambersburg.
He was a 1981 graduate of Chambersburg High School.
He was studying to be a network engineer through Sunrise Computers, Chambersburg. He had been employed at Raytheon Inc., Chambersburg for three years. Prior to working at Raytheon, he had been employed as a carpenter.
He had attended Mount Pleasant U.B. Church.
An avid fisherman and drummer, he also enjoyed boating and waterskiing as well as working with computers.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Deborah Adams Gardner, whom he married
Dec. 13, 1996; two daughters, Candi R. Baer of Mechanicsburg, Pa. and Justine N. Gardner of Waynesboro, Pa.; a sister, Valerie Melius of Chambersburg; a brother, Douglas K. Gardner of Fayetteville, Pa.; paternal grandmother, Mildred M. Laughlin Gardner of Carlisle, Pa.; and nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.
Services will be Monday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg. The Rev. Paul B. Baker will officiate. Burial will be in Parklawns Memorial Gardens, Chambersburg.
Visitation will be Monday one hour prior to the services at the funeral home.
Chasity M. Bumbaugh
FAYETTEVILLE, Pa. - Chasity Marie Bumbaugh, infant daughter of Jason A. Bumbaugh and Sherry McKenzie of 1336 Black Gap Road, was stillborn Thursday, Dec. 10, 1998, at Chambersburg Hospital, Chambersburg, Pa.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by paternal grandparents, Harold D. and Stephanie Kauffman Bumbaugh Sr. of Fayetteville; paternal grandparents, Dan and Arlene Bumbaugh Blizzard of Chambersburg; maternal grandparents, Leslie R. and Linda Ott McKenzie of Shippensburg, Pa.; maternal grandmother, Katherine McKenzie of Swansboro, N.C.; paternal great-grandmother, Mae Bumbaugh of Chambersburg; paternal great-grandmother, Marjorie Ritter of Fayetteville; maternal great-grandparents, L. Arnold and Doris Small McKenzie of Chambersburg; maternal great-grandparents, Jack and Patricia McInerny of Hubert, N.C.; and maternal stepgreat-grandmother, Violet Ott of Shade Gap, Pa.
A private graveside service will be held at Mount Zion Cemetery, Quincy, Pa. The Rev. Peter W. Emig will officiate.

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - C. Born Nov. 15, 1916, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Clarence L. and Mary Elizabeth Eavey Main.
He was a 1934 graduate of Hagerstown High School; a 1938 graduate of Western Maryland College; attended Columbia Business College; Rutgers University; and Virginia Polytechnical Institute.
He taught chemistry, physics and math in Washington County schools. He also taught students how to play the organ.
A World War II veteran, he served with the U.S. Army at Leyte and Zamboanga in the Philippines.
He later was employed at Roth's Furniture Store in Shippensburg, Pa., as an accountant and resumed his position as organist at Memorial Lutheran Church.
He was employed by Shockey Furniture Co.. In 1959, he became a Right of Way Agent with the Maryland State Roads Commission in Cumberland, Md. He later became a resident representative for the Office of Naval Research at Allegheny Ballistics. He later transferred to the BUWEPS Office in Silver Spring, Md., then to Johns Hopkins University, and later to George Washington University, where he retired in 1984. After serving as organist for churches for 43 years, he retired in 1984.
He was organizer and dean of Allegheny Chapter of the American Guild of Organists, and was a member of Chambersburg Chapter of the Guild of Organists. In 1959, he was the master of Hagerstown Masonic Lodge AF&AM 217. He was a member of Tall Cedars of Lebanon; South Penn Scottish Rite Club; Shippensburg Scottish Rite Club; Harrisburg Consistory AASR; and Grand Lodge AF&AM of Baltimore. He was a member of NARFE and AARP. Since living at the Luther Ridge Retirement Village, he had served as president of the Residents Association.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mary Helen Startzman; two sons, Richard Edward Main of Vienna, Va., and David L. Main of Laurel, Md.; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Ruth Hillyard.
Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 15 Randolph Ave., Hagerstown. The Rev. David M. Buchenroth will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown.
Viewing will be Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown.
Memorial donations may be made to St. Luke's Lutheran Church, 9100 Colesville Road, Silver Spring, MD 20910; or National Lutheran Home for the Aged, 9701 Veirs Drive, Rockville, MD 20850.
