LOWES - John Joseph, 58, formerly of Johnstown, Cemetery-obituaries?utm_source=partner_genlookups&utm_medium=partner&utm_campaign=genlookups_July21_textlink&tr_ad_group=textlinks&tr_funnel=supersearch" target="_blank">passed away on Wed. Oct. 19, 2005, in Richmond, Va., after a five month battle with pancreatic cancer. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2005, at the Main Post Chapel, Fort Lee, Va. Final interment will be private. The family will receive friends in the chapel following the service. Chief Warrant Officer 5 Lowes was born on Dec. 16, 1946, in Johnstown, to Nelson E. Lowes (deceased) and Mary Louise Sweeney Lowes. He married
the former Arlene Ellen Cramer, daughter of Blanche Cramer, of Johnstown. He and Arlene had one daughter, Stacy Lowes Martin, and one son, John Michael Lowes. Stacy and her husband Lawrence (Fayetteville, N.C.) have three children, Anthony, Lauren and Kayla. John Michael, and his wife, Sherry (Greensboro, N.C.) have two children, John James and Joseph. John is survived by four brothers and their families, Nelson (Mary), Ligonier; Timothy (Joyce), Webster, N.Y.; Dennis (Ruth), Manchester, Md.; and a very special brother, Richard "Ricky" Lowes, Ligonier, (formerly of the home). Arlene has four siblings; Audrey (Bill Mennett); George (Paula); "Bub" (Von); and Scott (Kris), all of Johnstown. He also is survived by an assortment of Army friends and beloved family. He wanted to make special mention of his very dear friends, Shelia and Dave Merritt, Chester, Va. John graduated from Ferndale High School, Johnstown, in 1966, and entered the U.S. Army. During his years of service to his nation, John earned a degree from St. Leo University, Florida. He worked for MPRI Corp. after retirement from the Army in 1999 and until his death. John's military service was replete with commendations and promotions. Rising from private to staff sergeant, then from warrant officer 1 to chief warrant officer 5, John touched many lives in very positive ways. His military awards and commendations include: The Legion of Merit, the Meritorious Service Medal with seven Oak Leaf Clusters, the Army Commendation Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters, two awards of the Army Good Conduct Medal, two awards of the National Defense Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon and five awards of the Overseas Service Ribbon. He also was inducted as a distinguished member of the Quartermaster Corps Regiment, into the Honorable Order of Saint Barbara and the Distinguished Order of Saint Martin. John's military assignments included: assignments at Fort Lee; assignments at Fort Bragg, N.C.; an assignment at Fort Riley, Kan.; and 15 years of service in Germany. He also served in Somalia and made several trips to Iraq in recent years. His love of country and God was a major part of his life. He was passionate about his service to our great nation, about his family and about his favorite hobby, woodworking. John never saw a fine piece of furniture that he couldn't make nor a friend in need who he wouldn't help. He was a loving husband and father, he was Dad to his children, John to his friends, and "Pap-Pap" to his grandchildren. He will be deeply missed, but his love of family and his legacy of training soldiers and helping to ensure the combat readiness of Army units will survive him forever.
