Obituaries by LocationMATULA - Charles
MATULA - Charles (1913-2004), went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on June 26, 2004, at the age of 91. A celebration of the life of this beloved and delightfully gentle, loving husband, father and grandfather will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Pleasant Hill Church of the Brethren, the Rev. Ray Streets and the Rev. Phillip A. King. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the William T. Hindman Funeral Home, Chandler Avenue. Mr. Matula was Born Feb. 17, 1913, in Johnstown, and from the age of five until he graduated from Johnstown High School in 1931, Charles's family was made up of those who lived in the Christian Home on Osborne Street in Moxham. He considered this to be a blessing and evidence in the Lord's hand on his life. Janet Houston, mother to the children in this institution, led Charles to the Lord in his youth and throughout his life, he shared his unwavering faith in God with many, many others by his actions as well as by his words. His sense of humor and spirit of fun are legendary. He had a perpetual enthusiasm for an interest in everything and everyone around him and valued his family and friends above material possessions. Mr. Matula worked as a welder in the shipyards of Ambridge, Pa., during World War II and was a draftsman in the Johnstown general office of Bethlehem Steel for 35 years. But above all, his life goal was to serve the Lord. He and his wife, Elsie, lived a life of daily service to God and to others. They contributed to the founding of a mission church in Ambridge, as well as Riverside Grace Brethren Church in Johnstown and throughout their entire married life, their spoken testimony and their trumpet and vocal duets were in demand for church or senior events. During his life, Charles was an active member of the First Brethren Church in downtown Johnstown, the Pleasant Hill Church of the Brethren, Riverside Brethren Church and Emmanuel Baptist Church in Johnstown, and served at various times as song leader, Sunday school superintendent, deacon and elder and, for many years, held the office of deacon emeritus. Charles is survived by his best friend and wife of 73 years, Elsie (Berg) Matula; daughter, Darlene Mack, and husband, Bob, of Arroyo Grande, Calif.; daughter, Judy Hoffman of Ford City, Pa.; son, Keith Matula, and fiancee, Carol Cain, of San Francisco; grandchildren, Susan and Christopher Johnson and Randy and Wendy Hoffman; and brother and sister, Floyd and Elaine Matula. Preceded in death by his beloved brother, George Matula, and son-in-law, Bill Hoffman. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to the memorial gift fund at Emmanuel Baptist Church or the living memorial trust fund at Pleasant Hill Church of the Brethren.
