Preceded in death by brother, John "Skip" Balogh, also brother-in-law, Joseph Hildebrand. Survived by wife of 20 years, Patricia (Ostrosky) Balogh; sister, Gloria Hildebrand, and fiance, William McCool, Mine 37; and brother, Richard Balogh, Mine 37. Also survived by mother-in-law, Stella Ostrosky-Wilson, Mine 36; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Carol and Ron Bunk; Janie and Barry Smith; John and Linda Ostrosky; and JoAnn and Jeff Fink; also nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews, Julie Muller and Brianna Fingerhoot; Shaun and George Sledge, Nicholas, Ashley and Emily; Randy and Leigh Mullikin, Jordan, Haleigh and Lauren; Brenda Smith; Christopher and Heather Smith, Tristan and Jordan; Eric and Melissa Smith and Davis; John J. Ostrosky; and Jenna and Jacob Fink. Also survived by beloved dog, Brandi. A 1969 graduate of Richland High School. U.S. Army veteran of Vietnam era. Frank was a current employee of PennDOT of Somerset County and a former employee of Milliken (Iron City) Millworks, also Roadway Trucking and Glosser Bros. Warehouse. He was a heavy- equipment operator for the area coal mining industry. Member and former governor of LOOM Lodge 349, Windber, also Windber American Legion Post 137 and member of UMWA. Born Vera Catherine Cronin, Sept. 16, 1922, in Cresson, daughter of the late John and Susan (McConnell) Cronin. Preceded in death by sister, Ruth Maruca. Survived by sisters, Jean Long and Mary Yanek, both of Cresson, and nieces and nephews. Sister received her elementary and secondary education in Cresson, graduating from Cresson High School in 1940. She entered the Sisters of Mercy in Dallas in 1943 and professed her vows in 1945. Earned a bachelor of science degree in mathematics from College Misericordia and master of science degree in biology from the University of Notre Dame. Sister taught in the Altoona-Johnstown parochial schools for eight years; taught at Bishop McCort High School, Johnstown, for 11 years; and served as diocesan supervisor of schools for two years. She was on the faculty and was dean of residents and assistant academic dean at College Misericordia for four years. Sister then taught and was dean of residents, academic dean and executive assistant to the president of Mount Aloysius College for 13 years. From 1969 to 1970, Sister was regional coordinator for the Sisters of Mercy in the Altoona-Johnstown and Pittsburgh dioceses. In 1984, she took computer education classes at Boise State University, Idaho, and then worked in the administrative offices of the Sisters of Mercy, Dallas. In 1989, she joined the staff of McAuley Hall, Cresson, and in 1995, joined the prayer ministry at Mercy Center, Dallas. Friends received from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday and 10 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at McAuley Hall, Cresson, where vigil for the deceased will be held Friday evening. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday at Our Lady of Mercy Chapel, Mount Aloysius College. Committal, Sisters of Mercy Cemetery. FERRE - Eugene E., 62, Main Street, Boswell, passed away suddenly Oct. 26, 2005, at Memorial Medical Center, following an 18-month recurrence of non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. Born Aug. 22, 1943, in Somerset, son of the former District Justice Constant N. Ferre and Elizabeth "Betty" (Brant) Ferre. Preceded in death by mother; an infant brother; maternal grandmother, Clara Wilson; maternal stepgrandfather, Alexander Wilson; paternal grandparents, Peter and Josephine Ferre; mother-in-law, Nellie (Dull) Berkebile; and father-in-law, a former Hooversville mortician, Garner "Lefty" Berkebile. Survived by father and stepmother, Dorothy (Miller) Ferre, Boswell; wife of 44 years, the former Garnel D. Berkebile; six children: Janine, married to Larry Konieczny, Shelocta; Josana, widow of Michael Baraniak, Berlin; Johnna, married to Jay Lensbouer, Somerset; Jamie Dedik, and companion, Ronald Rhoades, Gray; Eugene G., married to Penny Krupper, Johnstown; and Jill, married to Robert Lewis, Sipesville; 20 grandchildren: Staff Sgt. Lauren (Konieczny) Hewitt, married to Jason; Ian Konieczny; Amanda (Ferre) Shroyer, married to Jason; Staff Sgt. Ryan Ferre; Blake Baraniak; Lacey, Lonny and Joshua Lensbouer; Erica Dedik, and companion, Chris Brant; Nicole Dedik; Heather and Bradie Rhoades; Barret, Brittany, Brandon, Breann and Braxton Ferre; and Derrick, Russ and Megan Lewis; and six great-grandchildren: Madison and Bryce Shroyer; Ciera Primus; Kelsie Brant; and Riyah and Aneah Harris. Half-brother of Connie Schutrick, Irwin; Paula, married to Richard Gracie; Judy Ferre; and Peter Ferre, all of Boswell. Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Gene was retired from the Plumber and Pipefitters Local Union #354, after many years of service. Member of the Somerset Post #181 American Legion and the Jenner Rod and Gun Club. 1961 graduate of the former JBJ High School, Boswell, where he excelled in football and wrestling. Former Boswell borough councilman and Boswell Lions Little League coach. Gene was of the Catholic faith and was proud to have worked in the White House during the Kennedy presidency and on the Alaskan Pipeline in the 1970s. Had volunteered for various community organizations. Loved to travel with his wife seeking out treasures and antiques. Also, along with his wife, co-owned several rental properties. Was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Will be greatly missed. GALLARDY - Robert G., 47, 420 E. Survived by mother; wife, Vickie Wirfel, whom he married Aug. 5, 1978, in New Germany, Pa.; sons, Kyle Robert, Drew Gerard and Derek Edward, all at home; mother-in-law, Audrey Wirfel; great-aunt, Mildred Nelson; and numerous other aunts, uncles and cousins. Member of St. Therese of the Child Jesus Catholic Church. He was captain on Engine 311 of the Altoona Fire Department, adjunct instructor with Pa. State Fire Academy and instructor with Bucks County Community College. He was previously employed by Pepsi-Cola and the signal department at Conrail. A graduate of Forest Hills High School, 1976; Cambria County Community College, where he received an associate's degree in fire science; and numerous fire service continuing education courses and nationally accredited certifications. He enjoyed working and teaching in the fire department, instructing fire service training, riding his motorcycle, traveling with his dog, Spunky, and watching his boys play in sporting events. He was a member of International Association of Fire Fighters, Local 299; Summerhill Volunteer Fire Company, Station 86; Cambria County Volunteer Fire Association; and Central District Volunteer Firemen's Association. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Stevens Mortuary Inc., 1421 Eighth Ave., Altoona, Pa. 16602, where a Vigil for the Deceased service will be held at the convenience of the family. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 31, 2005, at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament by Father Timothy Grimme, Monsignor Robert Mazur and Monsignor Anthony Little.
