SPRINGBORO, Pa. - Sherman E. Burns, 81, formerly of Kingsville Township, died Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2002, at the Meadville Medical Center, Meadville, Pa.
Mr. Burns was born Jan. 5, 1921 in Windsor Township, the son of John S. and Isabel G. (Beckwith) Burns and had been a resident of Ashtabula County before moving to Pennsylvania in 1997.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving from 1939 to 1955.
He marriage Letta E. Cogan on April 14, 1946, in Ashtabula, Oh.
Mr. Burns was a plumber with Union Local 55 for 30 years, retiring in 1984.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Kingsville Township; Rising Sun Lodge Free & Accepted Masons, Ashtabula, OH, and attended the Faith Baptist Church, Albion, Pa. He enjoyed woodworking and gardening.
Survivors include three children, Letta E. "Tish" Shea of Staples, Minn., Sherman E. "Chip" of Loma Linda, Calif., and Shelly E. Eschweiler of Springboro, Pa.; six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mildred Kerr of Kenner, La.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Letta in 1995; a brother, John; five sisters, Lillian Gear, Lucille McClintock, Florence Stall, Eloise Fairburn, and Isabelle Burns; and three sisters in infancy.
Service is 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church, 6003 Route 193, Kingsville Township, with the Rev. David Hines and the Rev. Don Swonger of Faith Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in Lulu Falls Cemetery, Kingsville Township, where United War Veterans of Ashtabula County will conduct military rites.
Calling hours are 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Fleming Funeral Home Inc., 49 W. Jefferson St., Jefferson.

Robert L. Marshall
ERIE, Pa. - Robert L. Marshall, 52, died Friday, Feb. 1, 2002, at St. Vincent Health Center, Erie.
Born Dec. 22, 1949, in Hightown, Va., he was a son of Jennings B. and Lillian C. (Eye) Marshall and was a Geneva area most of his life, before moving to Youngsville, Pa.
He was a self-employed roofer for 20 years and also worked at Ridge Manor Nursery in Madison for 10 years.
He marriage Joyce L. Gabbert on June 13, 1990, in Ashtabula.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Loretta Bay of Canyon City, Calif. and Rhonda Miller of Englewood, Calif.; a son, Kenneth Barton Jr. of Englewood; a sister, Margaret Rowan of Buckhannon, W.Va.; and three brothers, Bryan and Al of Geneva, OH, and Joseph of Youngsville, Pa.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Betty Baldwin; and three brothers, David, George and William.
Service is 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Donald E. Walker Funeral Home, 828 Sherman St., Geneva, with the Rev. Larry Wade of Park Street Christian Church, Geneva, officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Geneva, OH.
Calling hours will be 7 to 9 p.m. Monday and from noon until the time of service Tuesday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the family. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
Betty E. Horvath
GIRARD, Pa. - Betty E. (Winkelman) Payne Horvath, 82, a resident of Pleasant Ridge Manor, formerly of West Springfield, Pa., died Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2001, at St. Vincent Health Center, Erie, Pa.
She was born June 10, 1919, in Erie, the daughter of Fred J. and Mary Ann (Haxaire) Winkelman.
Mrs. Horvath worked as church secretary for the Federated Church for many years and was a member of the Federated Church. She was a graduate of Academy High School in Erie and past noble grand of the Hedris Dale Rebekah Lodge. She had also attended the Ora Jean Beauty School where she learned hairdressing.
Survivors include two daughters, Carol Beals of Ellijay, Ga., and Deborah Cook of Newark; two sisters, Gladys Wardenga of Pinellas Park, Fla., and Alice Marie Vandresar of St. Petersburg, Fla.; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, as well as friend Robert Adams of Girard.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Ivan Payne in 1967; her second husband, J. Joseph Horvath in 1998; a son, Donald Payne; three brothers, Carl, Harry and Fred Winkelman; and a sister, Clara Root.
Funeral will be held 11 a.m. Monday at the Federated Church in East Springfield, Pa., with the Revs. Ed Huntley and Marvin Davis officiating. Burial will follow at Erie County Memorial Gardens.
Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, at the Jean Evans Thompson Funeral Home, 11883 Main St., East Springfield.

Cindy J. Peters
MCKEAN, Pa. - Cindy J. Peters, 55, died Friday, Aug. 2, 2002, at IHS at Bayside.
She was born July 24, 1947, in Conneaut, OH, the daughter of William H. and Betty Jo Reith.
Mrs. Peters graduated from Conneaut High School in 1965 and had been an Erie area resident most of her life.
Survivors include her parents; two daughters, Carrie Dunemaker of Wattsburg, Pa., and Kristy Howard of McKean; two sons, James Allen of McKean, Pa. and Randolph Allen of Millcreek, Pa.; a sister, Lori Jury of Conneaut; a brother, William Reith of Conneaut; and six grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Vicki Reith.
A private memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family.
No calling hours will be observed.
The Dusckas Funeral Home, Inc., East 2607 Buffalo Road, Erie, Pa., has charge of the arrangements.
Janet L. Phelps
ERIE, Pa - Janet L. Phelps, 41, of Chestnut Street, Erie, Pa., died Saturday, Aug. 3, 2002, at Hamot Medical Center.
She was born April 26, 1961 in Buffalo, N.Y., the daughter of Robert M. and Norma F. (Maloney) Bihler.
Mrs. Phelps was raised in West Springfield, Pa., and graduated from North Western High School in 1979.
She later went to work at Johnson Controls (now Carlisle Engineered Plastics) for 15 years.
Mrs. Phelps graduated from Mercyhurst College with an associates degree in hotel/restaurant institutional management in 2001.
After graduation she moved to Knoxville, Tenn., and was the assistant manager of the Hyatt Regency Hotel, Knoxville, Tenn., until 2002.
Mrs. Phelps attended West Springfield United Methodist Church.
She enjoyed needlepoint, as well as collecting Coca-Cola, Mickey Mouse and Miami Dolphins memorabilia.
Survivors include her mother of Cocoa, Fla.; her husband, G. Dennis, whom she marriage Nov. 7, 1997, in Waterford, Pa.; a daughter, Lori F. Wilcox of Erie, Pa.; a son, Jason E. Wienczkowski, of Erie, Pa.; four sisters, Roberta A. Kaczmarski of Buffalo, N.Y., Kimberly A. Harned of Albion, Pa.; and Debora M. Tagle and Heather L. Lussier of Cocoa, Fla.; two half-sisters, a brother, Robert M. Bihler Jr., of Albion, Pa., a stepson, Dennis J. of Fort Wayne, Ind.; two grandchildren; and three step-grandchildren.
Service is 11 a.m., Tuesday at the Daniel R. Edder Funeral Home, 309 Main St. E., Girard, Pa., with the Rev. Robert Klingler, of West Springfield United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Springfield Cemetery.
Calling hours are 1 to 3 and 7 to 9 p.m., Monday at the funeral home.

Cecil C. Thompson
HERMITAGE, Pa. - Cecil C. Thompson, 82, of King Drive in Hermitage, died Tuesday morning, Dec. 3, 2002, at Sharon Regional Health System in Sharon, Pa.
He was born Aug. 26, 1920, in Ashtabula, the son of Cecil Clair and Frances Elizabeth (White) Thompson.
A 1939 graduate of Sharon High School, a retired treasurer and financial vice-president at Protected Home Mutual Life Insurance. He worked 25 years before retiring Dec. 31, 1986.
Mr. Thompson was a Marine corporal during World War II and participated in the invasion of Saipan, Taiwan and Okinawa. He also served with the occupational forces in Japan.
He was an active member of Central Christian Church in Hermitage, where he was deacon and elder, past president of Covenant Class, past president of the Christian Men's Fellowship; a member of Shenango Lodge 668 F&AM (now Hermitage Lodge 810) Scottish Rite; Valley of New Castle and its Legion of Honor; Shenango Valley AARP 3616; was past president, secretary and treasurer of Northwest Local Board AABO Basketball Officials; and past secretary and treasurer of the Mercer and Crawford county Umpires Association.
He was an avid Cleveland Indians fan and loved camping, gardening and family activities.
Survivors include his wife, the former Mary Louise Louden, whom he marriage April 6, 1943; two daughters, Marilyn Bauer of Elyria, and Leann White of Jefferson; two granddaughters, Christina Lynne and Erika Jeanne White.
Service is 11 a.m. Saturday, at the Central Christian Church. The Rev. C. Charles Ecles, church pastor, will officiate. Burial will be at Hillcrest Memorial Park.
Calling hours are 3 to 6 p.m. Friday, at the Harold W. Stevenson Funeral Home, 264 E. State St., Sharon, Pa.

Wilda M. Rowe
NEW CASTLE, Pa. - Wilda Mary Rowe, 84, died Monday, Feb. 4, 2002, at the Golden Hill Nursing Home.
She was born Feb. 9, 1917, in New Castle, Pa., the daughter of Robert and Bertha (Riley) Price.
She was a homemaker.
Mrs. Rowe was a member of Third Presbyterian Church, New Castle, Pa.
Survivors include two daughters, Marcia Walker and Wilda Mitten of New Castle, Pa.; two sons, Rodney C. of Ashtabula, and Robert L. of Upper St. Clair, Pa.; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Willard Price of New Castle, Pa.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Chester C., on Dec. 3, 1985; and a grandson, Rodney.
Service is 11 a.m. Wednesday at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home, 2429 Wilmington Road, New Castle, Pa., with the Rev. Thomas Clyde of Third Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial will be in Oak Park Cemetery, New Castle, Pa.
Calling hours are 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
