June E. Norris

June E. Norris, 77, of 9 Second Ave., Hanover, died Monday, Aug. 6, at Hanover Hospital.
Born June 23, 1924 in New Oxford, she was the daughter of the late Ralph E. Herman and Bessie A. Cromer Fogle.
She was predeceased by her husband, George M. Norris, in 1988.
She had been a care giver in the Hanover area for many years.
During World War II she served as a Private First Class in the U.S. Army.
She was also a member of Harvest Chapel, Abbottstown.
She is survived by a son, Jay L. Norris of Clinton, Md.; four daughters, Barbara J. Johnson of Glen Burnie, Md., Judith A. Gutridge and Linda M. Zinneman, both of Hanover, Dena M. Schaefer of Dundalk, Md.; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Edward Newman of Gettysburg, Donald Carlson of Punta Gorda, Fla., Toby Fogle of Hanover; and two sisters, Maxine Zumbrum and Shirley Thomas, both of Hanover.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 9, at Panebaker Funeral Home, 311 Broadway, Hanover, with her pastor Rev. Donald Wolabaugh officiating.
Interment will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery with military Honors by the Allied Veterans Council of Hanover.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday.

Melvin L. Bankert

Melvin L. Bankert, 82, of Rehoboth Beach, Del., formerly of Littlestown, died Sunday, Aug. 5, at Carroll County Hospital, Westminster, Md.
Born May 14, 1919 in Bachmans Valley, Md., he was the son of the late Leonard and Bessie Harmon Bankert.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Thelma Achey Bankert.
He was a graduate of Charles Carroll High School.
He was a member of St. Mary’s Lutheran Church, Silver Run, Md.
He was a member of VFW, Littlestown; VFW, Rehoboth Beach and former member of Union Mills - Silver Run Lions Club.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
He retired from Weis Market, Hanover.
He is also survived by a daughter, Joyce Stickles of Rehoboth Beach; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a brother, Nevin Bankert of Aurora, Colo.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 8, at Little’s Funeral Home, 34 Maple Ave., Littlestown, with Rev. H. Lee Brumback II officiating.
Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Silver Run.
Military Honors will be conducted by Littlestown VFW.

Ethel A. Waltersdorff Lauchman

Ethel A. Waltersdorff Lauchman, 81, of Hanover, died Monday, Aug. 6 at Green Acres Nursing Home, Gettysburg.
Born Nov. 13, 1919 in Hanover, she was the daughter of the late Spurgeon F. and Viola M. Bechtel Amspacher.
She was predeceased by her husbands, Edward Waltersdorff and Harry Lauchman.
She is survived by a son, James W. Waltersdorff of Hanover; a daughter, Gloria J. Pickett of Hanover; three step-children; a grandchild; and a sister, Mildred Hoffacker of New Oxford.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 9, at Kenworthy Funeral Home, 269 Frederick St., Hanover, with Rev. Carol Wantz officiating.
Interment will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Hanover.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday.

Mary E. ‘Cissie’ Messner

Mary E. McIlhenny Messner, 84, of Shippensburg Health Care Center and formerly of 926 Wallace Ave., Chambersburg, died Sunday, Aug. 5.
Born April 22, 1917 in Gettysburg, she was the daughter of John W. and Elizabeth Neely McIlhenny.
She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Spurgeon A. Sam Messner.
She graduated from Gettysburg College in 1939.
She enjoyed playing bridge and was active in, and a former president of the Officers Wives Club.
She was a volunteer at Chambersburg Hospital and a member of DAR and the Delta Gamma Sorority.
She is also survived by two sons, John Messner of San Francisco, Cal.; William Messner of St. Louis, Mo.; a daughter, Marilyn Huntzberry of Chambersburg; seven grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and a great-grandson.
She was predeceased by a brother, William McIlhenny.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, Aug. 10, at Trinity Reformed United Church of Christ, 7169 L.W.W., St. Thomas, Pa. A fellowship will follow the service.
There will be a private ceremony in Evergreen Cemetery, Gettysburg, at a later time.
The Cremation Society of Harrisburg is handling the arrangements.

Rodney F. Sneeringer

Rodney F. Sneeringer, 79, of Hanover, died Monday, Aug. 6, at his home.
Born Dec. 20, 1921 in Bonneauville, he was the son of the late Clarence and Elizabeth Hufnagel Sneeringer.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Dora F. Goulden Sneeringer.
He was retired from Washington National Insurance Company, Hanover.
He was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, Hanover; Catholic War Veterans, Bonneauville; McSherrystown Knights of Columbus, where he was Grand Knight and a 4th Degree member of the Fr. Cyril J. Alwine assembly; a member of McSherrystown Home Association; the VFW, Hanover; Hanover Elks; McSherrystown Moose, and the New Oxford Social Club.
He was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Army as a sergeant with the 457th Anti Aircraft Battalion in France, Rhineland, Central Europe, and was involved in the invasion of Normandy, where he went into Omaha Beach on D-Day plus one.
He was awarded the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart.
He is also survived by two sons, Carl Sneeringer of Hanover and Kenneth Sneeringer of Shippensburg; a daughter, Charmaine Sulley of Council Bluff, Iowa; five grandchildren; five sisters, Rita Walter, Loretta Orndorff, both of Gettysburg; Anna Miller of Baltimore, Md., Sr. Dolores Sneeringer, S.S.J. of York and Justina Meckley of Abbottstown; and three brothers, Bernard Sneeringer of Gettysburg, Francis Sneeringer of York and Benjamin Sneeringer of Littlestown.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 9, at St. Vincent Church, Hanover, with Rev. John A. Szada Jr. as celebrant.
Interment will be in the church Cemetery.
Military honors will be provided by the CWV of Bonneauville.
Friends may call at Hicks Funeral Home, 501 Ridge Ave., McSherrystown, Wednesday evening, with a prayer service to be held at 8 p.m.

Claude C. Stauffer

Claude Christian Stauffer, 94, of Homewood at Plum Creek and formerly of E. Middle St., Hanover, died Monday, Aug. 6, at his residence.
Born May 30, 1907 in Union Township, Adams County, he was the son of the late J. Leander and Emma Kehr Stauffer.
He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Anna E. Resser Stauffer of Hanover.
He was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church, where he was a member of the sick committee for over 50 years.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during World War II.
He was also a member of Hanover AMVETS and the Harold H. Bair American Legion Post 2506, Hanover.
He was a member of the Eagle Fire Company, Hanover, for 59 years.
He is also survived by a son, Fred A. Stauffer of Millersville, Md.; four grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a son, James M. Stauffer.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 9, from St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 30 W. Chestnut St., Hanover, with Rev. Robert N. Maddox officiating.
Interment will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.
Friends may call at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the service Thursday.

Wetzel Funeral Home, Hanover, is in charge of the arrangements.

Mabel I. Weikert

Mabel I. Weikert, 78, of 84 Fairview Fruit Road, Biglerville, died Sunday, Aug. 5 at Gettysburg Hospital.
Born Jan 22, 1923 in Adams County, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Fannie Emory Daywalt.
She is survived by her husband, Robert F. Weikert.
She was a member of Mount Hope United Methodist Church, where she taught the adult Sunday School class and was very active.
She had been employed at Gettysburg Shoe Factory, Sylvania Shoe Company in McSherrystown, and prior to her retirement in 1990, she worked in the Gettysburg School District cafeteria department.
She is also survived by a daughter, Diane R. Weaver of New Oxford; a stepson, John R. Weikert of Waynesboro; and a stepdaughter Carolann Schmitt of Gettysburg; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 9 at at Mount Hope United Methodist Church in Fairfield, with the Rev. Suzanne A. Elliott officiating. Interment will be in the church Cemetery.
Friends may call from 7 - 9 p.m. at Monahan Funeral Home, Fairfield, Wednesday.

James A. Kane

Funeral services for James A. Kane, 91, formerly of Fairfield, who died Thursday, Aug. 2 at The Inn at Luther Ridge, Chambersburg, were held Monday, Aug. 6 at St. John Lutheran Church, Fairfield, with his pastor, the Rev. Christopher Frye officiating.
Interment was in Fairfield Union Cemetery.
Pallbearers were: Chuck Szarowski Sr., Chuck Szarowski Jr., Jeff Kane, Ted Kane, Bob Rosenwald and Darryl Kane.
Ushers were Charles Taylor and James Marshall Landis Jr.
Organist was Carol Garman.
Monahan Funeral Home, Fairfield, was in charge of the arrangements.
