Obituaries by LocationPearl E. (Reese) Glass
Pearl E. (Reese) Glass, 85, of Spring Grove died at 8:10 a.m., Saturday, June 1, 2002, at the Lutheran Village at Sprenkle Drive in York after a long illness.
Born in Catawissa, Jan. 9, 1917, she was a daughter of the late George H. and Maude E. (Leiby) Reese.
Mrs. Glass was a former employee of The Bon-Ton Department Store in York.
She was a member of Mount Zion United Church of Christ in Spring Grove. A former member of various church choirs, Mrs. Glass was also a junior choir director, church secretary, Sunday school teacher and youth group adviser.
She was the wife of the Rev. Charles F. Glass who died May 29, 2000.
Survivors include a son, Larry C. Glass of Spring Grove; two granddaughters; two great-grandchildren; and a sister, Alice Longenberger of Bloomsburg.
Burial will be 1 p.m. Wednesday in Hillside Cemetery, Catawissa, under the direction of the Irwin Funeral Home, 175 N. Main St., Spring Grove.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Mount Zion United Church of Christ, 12 N. Main St., Spring Grove. Officiating will be her pastor, the Rev. Kenneth D. Cherry, and the Rev. Walter D. Carlson, chaplain of the Lutheran Village at Sprenkle Drive.
William B. Saltzer
Memorial services for William B. Saltzer, 75, formerly of 313-A W. Fifth St., Bloomsburg, will be Monday at 11 a.m. in the Dean W. Kriner, Inc., Funeral Home, 325 Market St., Bloomsburg, with the Rev. Allen F. Acor, pastor of Trinity United Church of Christ, Strawberry Ridge, officiating. Interment will be in Old Rosemont Cemetery.
Mr. Saltzer died at 8:55 p.m. Wednesday, May 29, 2002, at the Veteran's Administration Medical Center, Wilkes-Barre, where he was a patient for two weeks.
Russel J. Cope Sr.

George M. Hill Sr.
Longtime crane operator in construction
George M. Hill Sr., 78, of 75 Center St., Coal Township (Tharptown), where he lived for 44 years, died 9:03 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2002, in the emergency room of Shamokin Area Community Hospital.
Born May 11, 1924, in Shamokin, he was the son of the late Stansbury and Hilda M. Madden Hill.
A lifelong resident of the Shamokin area, he was educated in Coal Township schools and served in the Army during World War II.
Mr. Hill had been employed for 50 years in the construction business as a crane operator for Operating Engineers of Easton, and was a member of the Industrial Union of Operating Engineers Local No. 542.
In 1950 in Maryland, he was marriage to the former Margaret Alice Varney, who died Dec. 8, 1998.
He attended the former St. Joseph's Church, Coal Township.
Mr. Hill was a member of the Fairview Fire Co.
He is survived by a son, George M. Hill Jr., Catawissa; a daughter, Nancy Nahodil, Coal Township; and three grandchildren.
Private services will be held at the convenience of the family, under the direction of the Leonard J. Lucas Funeral Home Ltd., 120 S. Market St., Shamokin.
Jane S. Hartranft
Services to be Saturday for Nuremberg woman
Jane S. Hartranft, 58, of Mahanoy Street, Nuremberg, died Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2002, at the Greater Hazleton Health Alliance, Broad Street Campus.
Born July 16, 1944, in Hazleton, she was the daughter of the late Allen and Verna Gerhardt Nause.
A lifelong resident of Nuremberg, Mrs. Hartranft retired from the former Kathy Fashions, Nuremberg.
She was a member of the Black Creek United Methodist Church, Sugarloaf.
She was also a member of the Beaver Township Volunteer Fire Co. Ladies Auxiliary.
She is survived by her husband, Thomas "Patcher" Hartranft, with whom she would have celebrated a 38th wedding anniversary today; a daughter, Mrs. Jeff (Wendy) Halcisak, West Hazleton; and two grandchildren.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Mark S. Harman Funeral Home Inc. (West), Conyngham-Rock Glen Road, Rock Glen, with her pastor, the Rev. Joseph Barth, officiating. Burial will be in the Black Creek United Methodist Cemetery, Sugarloaf.
Marian Stair Grabko
Former Berwick woman worked in retail sales
Marian Stair Grabko, 75, of Newark, Del., died Aug. 30, 2002, at Millcroft Nursing Home, Newark, following a long illness.
Born in Nanticoke, she was a daughter of the late Arthur W. and Verna Rinehimer Stair.
A 1945 graduate of Coughlin High School, Mrs. Grabko lived in Wilkes-Barre, Kingston and Berwick before moving to Newark.
She worked in retail sales at several department stores for many years, including John Wanamaker, Hecht's, Lord & Taylor and the Newark Department Store, and most recently was customer service representative for American Home Patient.
Mrs. Grabko was an active member of Calvary Baptist Church, Newark.
Her husband, Nicholas Grabko Sr., died previously.
She is survived by two sons: Nicholas R. Jr., Newark; and Michael Todd, Millsboro, Del.; a sister, Viola Mrochko, Hazleton; and a brother, Arthur L. Stair, Springfield, Mo.
Funeral services were held Sept. 4 in the chapel at Gracelawn Memorial Park with burial in Gracelawn Cemetery, New Castle.
Phyllis H. Billmeyer
Enjoyed gardening, cooking and playing bridge
Memorial services for Phyllis H. Billmeyer of Sunbury will be held 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 10 at the First Presbyterian Church, 238 Market St., Sunbury, with the Rev. Dr. William L. Carlough officiating. Private burial took place in Pomfret Manor Cemetery, Sunbury, under the direction of the Miller-Visneski Funeral Home, 10 W. Mahoning St., Danville.
Mrs. Billmeyer, 87, died Tuesday morning, Oct. 1, 2002, at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Randall L. and Maxine Billmeyer, 168 A Indian Run Road, Danville, following a long illness.
Born May 30, 1915, she was the daughter of the late George and Clara Getty Creasy, and was raised in Riverside.
A 1934 graduate of Danville High School, she also graduated from Geisinger School of Nursing.
Mrs. Billmeyer was employed as a registered nurse at several local nursing homes. After retiring, she became a volunteer for the American Red Cross.
She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Sunbury, where she served as a deaconess.
Mrs. Billmeyer enjoyed flower gardening, cooking, antiques, playing bridge and watching Billy Graham crusades on television.
In addition to the son with whom she lived, she is survived by a son, Alexander Billmeyer III, Watsontown R.R.2; and three grandchildren.
Viola Marie Threlkeld
Son in Orangeville is among woman's survivors
Viola Marie Pisano Threlkeld, 78, of Netcong, N.J., died Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2002, at St. Clare's Hospital, Denville, N.J.
Born in Reading, she was a daughter of the late Pasquale and Santa Ferrara Pisano.
A lifelong resident of Netcong, Mrs. Threlkeld was a retired machine operator for Dover Handbag, Netcong.
She was a lifelong member of St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church.
Her husband, Leavis O. Threlkeld, died in 1976.
She is survived by two sons: Dr. Wayne Threlkeld, Randolph, N.J.; and Dennis Threlkeld, Orangeville; four grandchildren; and two sisters: Madeline Van Orden, Netcong; and Rose Bizzari, Succasunna, N.J.
Funeral services will be 8 a.m. Friday at the Leber-Lakeside Funeral Home, Main Road, Landing, N.J., followed by a 10:15 a.m. Liturgy of Christian Burial in St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church, Netcong. Burial will be in Stanhope Union Cemetery, Mount Olive Township, N.J.
