Jerry "Chicken Man" Handy, 42, of 721 E. 19th St., died Sunday, Jan. 11, 1998.
He was born Nov. 24, 1955, in Crenshaw, Miss., son of the late Benjamin and Lucinda Handy Sr.
Mr. Handy, who had lived in Erie for 24 years, worked for Indee Exhaust. He previously worked for W&P Poultry as a truck driver.
He enjoyed fishing.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Handy.
He is survived by his wife, Janice Hansbrew of Erie; a son, Jermaine D. Hansbrew of Erie; a stepson, Jeffrey D. Hansbrew, serving with the U.S. Marine Corps on Okinawa; six brothers, Perry and Larry Handy, both of Malden, Mo., Charles Handy of Philadelphia, Benjamin Handy Jr. of Grenada, Miss., Willie Handy of Indianapolis, Ind., and James Handy of Crenshaw; three sisters, Eulestine Rice and her husband, James, and Betty Jean Handy, all of Pleasantville, Ky., and Barbara Ann Handy of Dwightsville, N.C.; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may call at Law Funeral Home, 1861 Buffalo Road, on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A service will be held at Morning Star Baptist Church, 327 E. 23rd St., Saturday at 1 p.m., conducted by the Rev. Leo Manning Jr.
Burial will be at Lakeside Cemetery.

Gloria Evanoff Simpson Chatman
Gloria Evanoff Simpson Chatman, 64, a resident of Friendship Towers, 111 E. 11th St., died at her home Monday morning, Jan. 12, 1998, after a long illness.
She was born Aug. 14, 1933, in Erie, daughter of the late Harry and Theresa Petroff Evanoff.
Mrs. Chatman, who lived in Erie all her life, was a homemaker. She had done volunteer work at the City Mission New Life Center and her church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Marshall "Shorty" Chatman, in 1991; and an infant brother, Albert Evanoff.
She is survived by four daughters, Vicki Simpson Bonhomme of Phoenix, Ariz., Darlene Simpson Clayton of Houston, Texas, Trina Simpson Ibrahim of Durham, N.C., and Julie Barnett of Erie; two sons, Robert Simpson Jr. of Phoenix and Gary M. Simpson of Erie; five sisters, Fima E. Weed and Anita K. DeFonzo, both of Erie, Marilyn A. Voronovas of Brantford, Canada, Kay M. Pazdziesz of El Cajon, Calif., and Matrina Barry of Miami, Fla.; two brothers, Harry and Jack Evanoff, both of Erie; eight grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at Russell C. Schmidt & Son Funeral Home, 2926 Pine Ave., on Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service there at 11 a.m.
Burial will be at Wintergreen Gorge Cemetery.

Ernest Katzwinkel Jr.
Ernest Katzwinkel Jr., 73, of 4117 Venice Drive, died Monday, Jan. 12, 1998, at Metro Health Center.
He was born April 11, 1924, in Erie, son of the late Ernest and Helen Klein Katzwinkel.
Mr. Katzwinkel, who lived in Erie all his life, was a graduate of Millcreek High School and attended Gannon University. He had worked for Bucyrus-Erie Corp. as a supervisor.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
He was a member of the Erie Maennerchor Club and enjoyed hunting, fishing and duckpin bowling at the Maennerchor.
Survivors include a son, U.S. Navy Capt. Ernest J. Katzwinkel and his wife, Judy; a brother, Henry Katzwinkel of Erie; and his companion, Marie Cravinho.
Friends may call at John J. Quinn Funeral Home, W. 9th and Liberty streets, Thursday from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. The service will be held there Friday at 1 p.m.
Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery.

Charlotte Churchill Bevevino
WARREN - Charlotte Churchill Bevevino, 62, of 4 East Woodcrest Drive, Clarendon, Warren County, died Wednesday morning, Jan. 14, 1998, at Warren Manor after a long illness.
She was born Dec. 21, 1935, in Teaneck, N.J., daughter of Sophie Kondak Churchill of Waterford and the late Winton A. Churchill.
Mrs. Bevevino, who lived in Warren County most of her life, was a 1953 graduate of Warren High School and studied nursing. She had worked for the Tri-County Intermediate Unit as a teacher's aide at Allegheny, North Warren, Pleasant and South Street elementary schools.
She was a parishioner of St. Joseph Catholic Church and also belonged to the Moose Lodge, Pennsylvania State Education Retirement Association, the YMCA and Warren Public Library Association. She was a Warren Special Olympics volunteer.
In addition to her mother, survivors include her husband, Mark A. Bevevino, whom she marriage Dec. 31, 1955; three sons, Randal Bevevino of Clarendon Heights, Warren County, and Robin and Ross Bevevino, both of Warren; a daughter, Mrs. David (Rebecca Lynn) Crossley of Warren; a brother, Leroy Churchill of Waterford; and nine grandchildren.
Friends may call at Donald E. Lewis Funeral Home, 304 East Street, Warren, Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Joseph Catholic Church on Friday at 10 a.m. Monsignor H. Desmond McGee, parochial vicar, will be the celebrant.
Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Warren Public Library Association or the Warren County Unit of the American Cancer Society.

Barbara Ann Goodwin
Barbara Ann "Barb" Goodwin, 46, formerly of Zimmerly Road, died Monday, Jan. 12, 1998, at Pleasant Ridge Manor West as a result of multiple sclerosis.
She was born Feb. 26, 1951, in Erie, daughter of Gerald W. McClelland of McKean and Donna M. Green Thomas of Erie.
Mrs. Goodwin, who was a 1969 graduate of McDowell High School, had worked with Metro Erie Meals on Wheels.
She was a member of Berean Baptist Church in Girard and a former member of the Altar Guild and the Episcopal Church Women at St. Mark Church. She formerly coordinated the Episcopal Diocesan Prayer Chain.
She enjoyed crafts, was an accomplished tole painter and painted landscapes and still lifes.
She was preceded in death by a stepbrother, Steven Roberts.
Survivors include her grandmother, Hazel McClelland Mansfield of Girard; a son, Daniel Keith Goodwin of Erie; a daughter, Nicole Marie Goodwin of San Antonio, Texas; three sisters, Patricia Schmitt of Erie, Sandra Sutch and her husband, Thomas, of Lake City, and Cheryl Seelinger and her husband, Robert, of East Springfield; her stepmother, Kay McClelland of McKean; her stepfather, Gordon Thomas of Erie; three stepbrothers, James and Dennis Roberts, both of Erie, and Richard Roberts of McKean; a stepsister, Virginia Sitter of Harborcreek and her husband, David; three half-brothers, William and Kenneth Thomas, both of Erie, and Richard Thomas of Tampa, Fla.; a half-sister, Linda McClelland of Erie; a grandson, Zachery Goodwin; and a close friend, Debra Warner of Girard.
Friends may call at Burton Funeral Home, 525 Main Street East, Girard, Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 p.m. until the time of the service there at 8 p.m. The Rev. John Bates of Berean Baptist Church will officiate.

Alfred A. Grill
MEADVILLE - Alfred A. Grill, 89, of 375 Meadow St., Meadville, died at his home Wednesday, Jan. 14, 1998.
He was born May 17, 1908, in Lewis Run, McKean County, son of the late Ralph and Eleanor D'Alessio Grill.
Mr. Grill was a retired Pennsylvania State Police officer and two-term Crawford County sheriff.
Mr. Grill served in the Pennsylvania State Police for 28 years, from October 1932 until his retirement in 1960. Over the years he was assigned to Troop A in Greensburg, Troop B in Washington County and Troop E in Erie, handling such duties as traffic control, criminal investigations and driver's license examinations.
As a state automobile inspection investigator, he supervised more than 325 state inspection garages in Erie and Warren counties. He also was the officer in charge of the PSP substation in Meadville.
Mr. Grill was the Crawford County sheriff and Crawford County Jail warden from 1968-75.
Since 1982, he had been a volunteer at Meadville Medical Center and did volunteer work at Wesbury, Crawford County Care Center and the Senior Citizen Center.
He served in the U.S. Army Air Force and was a licensed pilot with a commercial pilot's license.
He was a member of Elks Lodge 219, the Fraternal Order of Eagles and Italian Civic Club. He was a former member of the Sertoma Club, the Pennsylvania Sheriffs Association and Pennsylvania Prison Wardens Association.
He was a charter member of the Fraternal Order of Police and helped organize and was the first president of the Crawford County Chapter of PARSE.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Henry and Frank Grill, and a sister, Marie Grimaldi.
He is survived by his wife, Eleanor Williams Grill, whom he marriage April 10, 1942; a daughter, Mrs. Jack (Sharyn) Hanaway of Meadville; two sons, Terry Grill of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Robert Grill of Erie; a sister, Helen Apthorpe of Florida; eight grandsons, a great-grandson and several nephews.
Friends may call at Roofner-Collins Funeral Home, 544 Chestnut St., Meadville, on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A prayer service will be held there Friday at 8:15 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Agatha Catholic Church on Saturday at 10 a.m. Monsignor Henry J. Schauerman, pastor of the parish, will be the celebrant.
Entombment will be at Roselawn Memorial Gardens.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of Crawford County.

Samuel Ulan
Samuel Ulan, 90, RD 2 Pont Road, Albion, died at home on Tuesday, Jan. 13, 1998, after a long illness.
He was born on Feb. 14, 1907, in Chipman, Alberta, Canada, the son of the late John and Mary Bordulak Ulan.
Mr. Ulan was a member of St. Nicholas Orthodox Church, Pageville, Pa. Prior to his retirement several years ago, he was an ironworker for PNC Dock, Conneaut, Ohio. He served with the U.S. Army military police detachment in World War II. He ran Ulan Cider Mill in Pont, Pa., for several years. He enjoyed building ponds.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Molly Ulan, on Jan. 8, 1996; a sister, Dorothy Dennis; and two brothers, John Ulan and Nick Ulan.
Survivors include two sisters, Tillie Nagle and Olga Kessler, both of Albion; a brother, Walter Ulan of Albion; a close friend, Carl Main of Meadville; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the Samuel J. Steff Funeral Home, 188 E. State St., Albion, Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., and may attend a funeral service at St. Nicholas Orthodox Church, Pageville, Friday at 11 a.m.
Burial will be at St. Nicholas Cemetery, Pageville.
Parastes services will be held at 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Robert Palmer
Robert "Shorty" Palmer, 68, 901 W. 4th, died on Monday, Jan. 12, 1998, at Twinbrook Medical Center.
He was born in New York state on June 3, 1929, son of the late Harvey and Velma Gilmore Palmer. He had lived in Erie most of his life.
Mr. Palmer retired from a local laundromat in downtown Erie.
He collected old newspaper clippings.
He was preceded in death by a sister and three brothers.
He is survived by his wife, Marjorie Hansen Palmer; two daughters, Michelle and Monica Palmer of Harborcreek Township; one son, Eric Palmer of New Cumberland, Pa.; two grandchildren, Nicholas and Kayla Ellison; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the Dusckas Funeral Home East, 2607 Buffalo Road, on Thursday from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. and may attend a service there on Friday at 2 p.m. The Rev. Arthur F. Good, associate pastor of Wesley United Methodist Church, will officiate.
Burial will be at Wintergreen Gorge Cemetery.
