Was WW II Army veteran, serving in Europe
TOWNVILLE - Ronald E. Shepard, 73, a resident of Crawford County Care Center, Saegertown, Pa., died at his home Saturday, June 20, 1998.
He was born on March 1, 1925, in Union City, son of the late Ernest Carl and Iva Lavinia Buell Shepard.
Mr. Shepard was a 1943 graduate of Union City High School and a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in Europe and receiving a medical discharge in June 1945. He had been a part-time police officer in Union City, a crane operator in Erie and a truck driver.
He was preceded in death on March 6, 1998, by his wife, Virginia Frost, whom he marriage on May 5, 1950.
Survivors include a daughter, Cathy Lynne Nelson of Apopka, Fla.; a son, Curt Shepard of Apopka; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
The service will be private.
Burial will be at Shreve Ridge Cemetery, Bloomfield Township, Crawford County.

Dale Laverne Yost
Worked in plastics industry
PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - Dale Laverne Yost, 66, of Port Charlotte, formerly of North East, died Thursday, June 11, 1998, at Annapolis Hospital in Detroit, Mich.
He was born on July 9, 1931, in Wattsburg, son of the late Kenneth and Iona Yost.
Mr. Yost worked in the plastics industry in the Erie area before moving to Port Charlotte 22 years ago.
He is survived by his wife, Marjorie E. Law; two sons, Dale M. Yost and his wife, Kelli, and Jerry A. Yost and his wife, Cynthia, all of Port Charlotte, Fla.; a sister, Joyce Shinko of Glenshaw, Pa.; and six grandchildren.
Friends may attend a local memorial service at 3 p.m., Thursday, July 9, at State Line United Methodist Church, 12591 E. Main St., North East.
Memorials may be made to American Diabetes Association, 1101 N. Lake Destiny Road No. 415, Maitland, Fla. 32751-7105.

Ann Radecki Webb
Lived in Corry and Warren
Ann Radecki Webb, 77, of 117 Redwood St., Warren, and formerly of Marion St., Corry, died Tuesday, June 23, 1998, at Warren General Hospital.
She was born Jan. 21, 1921, in Corry, daughter of the late Wesley and Katheryn Zak Radecki.
Mrs. Webb was raised and educated in Corry. She worked at the former Corry Instrument in the 1940s. She then worked as a secretary at the former Ajax Iron Works in Corry for 10 years, retiring in 1975. She moved to Warren and has lived with her son there since 1995. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Corry.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph W. Webb Jr., on Jan. 25, 1989; a sister, Carol Lawson; and two brothers, Joseph and Chester Radecki.
She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. George (Mary) O'Dell of Jamestown, N.Y.; four sons, Ralph Webb III of Reading, Pa., Donald Webb of Tucson, Ariz., Bruce Webb of Oregon and Douglas Webb of Warren and his wife, Karen; four brothers, Stanley Radecki of Corry and his wife, Tillie, John Radecki of Upland, Calif., and his wife, Ruth, Eugene "Pete" Radecki of Walnut, Calif., and his wife, Margaret, and Lewis Radecki of Rangeley, Maine, and his wife, Judy; 12 grandchildren, one great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews.
No calling hours or service will be held.
Burial will be at Pine Grove Cemetery in Corry.
Bracken Funeral Home in Corry is handling arrangements.

William R. Cass
Was Navy veteran of World War II
William R. Cass, 80, 1217 W. 33rd St., died Monday, June 22, 1998, at Saint Vincent Health Center.
He was born in East Springfield, June 12, 1918, son of the late William H. and Jennie Olson Cass.
Mr. Cass had worked at Railway Express for many years and retired from Security-Peoples Bank. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving in the Pacific Theater.
He was a member of Emmanuel Presbyterian Church, Perry-Keystone Lodge 392 F.&A.M., Erepa Grotto Saga Club and Scottish Rite, Valley of Erie. He was also a member of the American Legion Carl Neff Post 571.
Mr. Cass is survived by his wife, Eleanore Krebs Cass; a son, Richard W. Cass of Erie and his wife Karen; a daughter, Diane L. Cass of Fayetteville, N.Y., and her husband, Timothy McLaughlin; and a grandson, William N. Cass.
There will be no calling hours.
Private services and burial will be at Wales Cemetery.
The Merle E. Wood Funeral Home, 215 W. 25th St., is in charge of arrangements.

Stephen A. Tobias
Worked for the Village of Westfield
WESTFIELD, N.Y. - Stephen Anthony Tobias, 49, of 34 Bourne St., died Monday, June 22, 1998, at home.
He was born Sept. 21, 1948, in Westfield, the son of Irene Harper Tobias and the late Stephan Tobias.
He lived in Westfield all his life. He worked for the Village of Westfield for 33 years and most recently was foreman of the village's water and sewer department. He was a member of St. James Major Roman Catholic Church and the Loyal Order of Moose No. 118 of Westfield, and was a social member of the John W. Rogers American Legion Post No. 327 of Westfield. He was an avid sports fan and played in the Westfield Softball League.
He was also preceded in death by an infant sister, Maxine Joan Tobias.
Survivors also include his wife, Barbara Eggleston Tobias, whom he marriage June 8, 1972; four sons, James Tobias of Raleigh, N.C., Mark and Kevin VanDyke, both of Florida, and Scott VanDyke of Westfield; a daughter, Kathy Tobias Tennies of Orlando, Fla.; two sisters, Christine Tobias and Maxine Tyczkowksi, both of Westfield; and two grandchildren.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Mason Funeral Home, 37 Clinton St., Westfield, and may attend a service Thursday at 11 a.m. at St. James Major Roman Catholic Church. The Rev. Daniel A. Lapinski will officiate.
Burial will be at St. James Cemetery, Westfield.

Richard Gatling Hawn
WW II Navy veteran who served on submarines
Richard Gatling Hawn, 78, of Maryland Avenue, died Tuesday, June 23, 1998, at his residence.
He was born Dec. 7, 1919, in New York City, son of the late Gavin Campbell and Rosalind Gatling Hawn.
Mr. Hawn served in the U.S. Navy from 1937 to 1945. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving as chief petty officer aboard submarines in the Pacific. He went on 11 war patrols and was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action.
Following the war, he earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from New York University. He moved to Erie in 1955 and worked for over 30 years at General Electric as a diesel engine engineer. He was a registered professional engineer in Pennsylvania, Texas and Washington. Mr. Hawn was a frequent contributor to the editorial pages of the Erie Times News and enjoyed photography, computers, motorcycles and fine automobiles.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Emme Wingate Hawn of Erie; one daughter, Sally Reynolds of Lancaster, Pa.; one son, Benjamin Hawn of New Iberia, La.; and two grandchildren, Rosalind and Madeline Reynolds.
Services will be private and cremation will follow.
Memorials may be made to the VNA Hospice of Erie County, 1305 Peach St., Erie, PA 16501; or to the Pennsylvania Soldiers and Sailors Home Activity Fund, 560 E. Third St., Erie, PA 16507.

Ralph P. Madden
Taught in Erie School District
Ralph P. Madden, 73, died on Sunday, June 21, 1998, at his camp in Warren, Pa.
He was born on Aug. 1, 1924, in Erie, a son of the late Dr. Louis Silverman and Bridget Madden.
He was U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving on the U.S.S. Yahara in the Pacific.
He received master's degrees in education and political science from the University of Pittsburgh.
He had worked for the Sheet Metal Workers' International Association and taught in the Erie School District for 25 years.
He was a member of the Sunflower Club, the Benevolent Order of the Elks, and the VFW Post 470.
He enjoyed the outdoors and photography.
He was preceded in death by a son, Ralph J. Madden, and four brothers, Wilfred, William, Louis and Harold Madden.
He is survived by two sons, David J. Madden and his wife, Mary, and James A. Madden, all of Erie; one brother, Clyde Madden of Pittsburgh; two sisters, Annabelle Shoup of Pittsburgh and Marge Fratus of Erie; five grandchildren, Jason, Carrie, Jenny, James and Ryan Madden; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the John R. Orlando Funeral Home, 2122 Raspberry St., Wednesday from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m., and are invited to attend a service there on Thursday at 1 p.m., with the Rev. David Laakso officiating.
Burial will be at Gate of Heaven Cemetery.

James Marcus Davis
Was born in Ashtabula, Ohio
CONNEAUT, Ohio - James Marcus Davis, 3, of Shaker Heights, Ohio, died Sunday, June 21, 1998, at Fairview University Medical Center in Minneapolis, Minn.
He had been a patient there since January for a bone marrow transplant.
Davis was born on Nov. 1, 1994, in Ashtabula, Ohio, a son of Thomas W. and Diane Sayles Davis.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, John Sayles and Helen Davis Watson.
He is survived by two brothers, Thomas W. Davis Jr. and Michael Jemison; his maternal grandmother, Norma Sayles of Conneaut; his paternal grandfather, Willie Davis of Sheraw, S.C.; and a number of aunts and uncles.
Friends may call Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Marcy Funeral Home, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut, where a service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday.
Burial will be at Greenlawn Memory Gardens.
