Sister Adele became well-known in the area as a talented artist. For many years, her landscapes were annually awarded in raffles sponsored by the secular Carmelites. Many oil and watercolor portraits or paintings were commissioned by individuals who saw her work on display at the monastery.
Born in Baltimore, Md., May 19, 1908, she was the eldest of three daughters born to the late Michael Joseph and Alice (Cordelia) Jennings. She entered the Carmel of Philadelphia on Feb. 11, 1930, and made her profession of vows on Aug. 17, 1931. Her many years as a professed discalced Carmelite nun were spent in a succession of Carmels. On two occasions, she was asked to help establish or "found" a monastery - in Mobile, Ala., in 1943, and later, in Durham, N.C. in 1965. Upon closing of the monastery in North Carolina, Sister Adele returned to the Carmel of Philadelphia, where she remained until her services as formation directress were requested by the Carmel in Sacramento, Calif.
Sister Adele became a member of the Carmel community in Wheeling, W.Va., when she was no longer needed in Sacramento. In 1975, that entire community moved to Elysburg, merging with the group of Carmelites who had originally lived in Mount Carmel. She spent 28 years there.
Surviving is a sister, Marie Abbott, of Ohio.
