Claire M. (Henrie) Vandermark, 71, of 258 B Foundryville Road, Berwick, Cemetery-obituaries?utm_source=partner_genlookups&utm_medium=partner&utm_campaign=genlookups_July21_textlink&tr_ad_group=textlinks&tr_funnel=supersearch">died early Thursday morning, Aug. 7, 2003, at the Berwick Retirement Village II, where she had been a resident since Aug. 1. She had been in ill health for the past two years.
Born in Berwick, Sept. 29, 1931, she was a daughter of the late Floyd Henrie and Grace (Kishbaugh) Henrie. She was a 1949 graduate of Berwick High School.
Mrs. Vandermark had worked at Wise Potato Chip Co. in Berwick until the mid-1960s. She later worked for Milco Industries in Berwick, and then for Deihl's Camping Resort near Orangeville for five years.
A lifelong resident of the Berwick area, she was a member of the Summerhill Evangelical United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Vandermark enjoyed crafts, playing bingo and camping.

Surviving, in addition to her husband, are a son, Allan L. Vandermark, Berwick; two grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two sisters: Joyce Fisher and Mrs. Theodore "Ted" (Lauretta) Kukorlo, both of Berwick.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Kelchner-McMichael Funeral Home Inc., 119-121 E. Third St., Berwick. The Rev. William F. Tucker, retired Christian minister, and the Rev. Luther R. Spertzel, pastor of Summerhill Evangelical United Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Walnut Street, Berwick.
John A. Keblish
John A. Keblish, 87, formerly of 1021 E. Born in Whitestone, Queens, N.Y., April 12, 1916, he was a son of the late Andrew and Tessie (Domanic) Keblish.
Mr. Keblish attended PS 79 Newtown High School, Elmhurst, N.Y., and served in the Army from March 4, 1942 until he was honorably discharged Feb. 4, 1946. He received the World War II Victory Ribbon, the Eastern-African-Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon and the American Theater Ribbon.
A clothing designer by trade, Mr. Keblish worked in the clothing fashion industry in New York.
He was a parishioner of Holy Annunciation Russian Orthodox Church, Berwick.

Funeral services will be held 9:30 a.m. Thursday from the Joseph W. Nardi Funeral Home, 201 W. Second St., Berwick, followed by a Requiem service at 10 a.m. at Holy Annunciation Russian Orthodox Church, Second Avenue, Berwick, with his pastor, the Rev. James Weremedic, as celebrant.
Harriet (Wenner) McGeehan
Fishing Creek Township native, social activist
Harriet (Wenner) McGeehan, 93, formerly of North Broad Street, West Hazleton, Cemetery-obituaries?utm_source=partner_genlookups&utm_medium=partner&utm_campaign=genlookups_July21_textlink&tr_ad_group=textlinks&tr_funnel=supersearch">died Saturday, Aug. 2, 2003, at Fritzingertown Senior Living Center.
A native of Fishing Creek Township, she was a daughter of the late Leona and William C. Wenner.
Mrs. McGeehan taught mathematics in both the West Hazleton and Weatherly school districts.
A lifelong social activist, Mrs. McGeehan was named Distinguished Daughter of Pennsylvania by Gov. Dick Thornburgh in 1985. In 1983, she was selected as Distinguished Alumna of Pennsylvania State University, where she had been one of the only female students in mathematics and physics, graduating with honors in 1930. She was also honored twice more in 1987, by the Department of Education for "highest distinction in both education and other fields," and in 1991, as the first woman to receive the Penn Stater Award.
Among other honors, Mrs. McGeehan received a 1989 Luzerne County Women's Conference Pathfinders Award, and 1982 Distinguished Volunteer Award from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. She was also named 1982 "Woman of the Year" by the Hazleton Soroptomists.
Mrs. McGeehan was a member of the board of the Pennsylvania Women's Campaign Fund from 1982 to 1986, and was appointed to the steering committee of the Pennsylvania White House Conference on Aging in 1980, and served on the Pennsylvania Commission for Women from 1978-1988. In 1957, she was appointed, by Gov. George Leader, to the Pennsylvania Commission on Constitutional Revision, and was published on the subject of constitutional revision four times between 1962 and 1982.
She was a lifelong member of the American Association of University Women, also serving on both the state and national division levels of the AAUW. Mrs. McGeehan founded the League of Women voters in 1950, and helped organize other branches, including those locally.
In Hazleton, Mrs. McGeehan was a member of the Women's Coalition of Greater Hazleton Keystone Job Corps Community Relations Council, she was treasurer of Hazleton Women's Club, secretary of the Fine Arts Council, held office on the Penn State Hazleton Campus Educational Council, and served on the board of directors of the Hazleton YMCA, United Way and Hazleton-Nanticoke Mental Health/Mental Retardation Center.
An active member of her church throughout her lifetime, she served on the policy-setting Executive Council of the National United Church of Christ from 1981-1987, she was elected first chairperson of the national UCC Coordinating Center for Women, and was a member of the Board of Directors of the National United Church Board for World Ministeries from 1972-1981. She was a moderator of Penn Northeast Conference, and was a member of the consistories of both Christ UCC, Conyngham, and Christ's Memorial UCC, West Hazleton, where she was the first female consistory president.

Paul J. Stenko
Former pro football player, teacher, coach
Paul J. Stenko, 85, of 414 Martzville Road, Berwick, Cemetery-obituaries?utm_source=partner_genlookups&utm_medium=partner&utm_campaign=genlookups_July21_textlink&tr_ad_group=textlinks&tr_funnel=supersearch">died Saturday, Aug. 2, 2003, at Berwick Hospital Center.
Born in Berwick, July 12, 1918, he was a son of the late Paul Stenko and Mary (Holick) Stenko.
A graduate of Berwick High School, Mr. Stenko received a scholarship to Villanova, where he played football for four years, and received a bachelor of arts degree in education. He was inducted into the Villanova Hall of Fame.
Mr. Stenko signed with the N.Y. Giants in 1942. He played one season before becoming a physical education instructor with the Army Air Corps, where he played for March Field in California for three years.
Mr. Stenko played with the Giants in 1946, the Steelers in 1947, and with the Bears, under George Halas, from 1948-1951. After his football career, he taught physical education and social studies and coached football at Nescopeck, from 1972 until it became part of the Berwick School District. He was an assistant coach for Berwick under George Curry for one season.
In 1948, Mr. Stenko and his family opened Stenko Arena on the corner of Sixth Avenue and Warren Street, bringing the Eastern Professional Basketball League, professional boxing, wrestling, roller skating and bowling to Berwick.
He was a member of Holy Resurrection Orthodox Church, Alden Station.
Mr. Stenko was a member of FROC, the Berwick Russian Glee Club, the Berwick Elks, the NFL Alumni, the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees, and was a former member of the American Legion.

Funeral services will be 9:30 a.m. Tuesday from Mayo Funeral Home Inc., 110 Chestnut St., Berwick, followed by a Requiem service at 10 a.m. at Holy Annunciation Orthodox Church, Second Avenue. The Rev. James P. Weremedic, Holy Annunciation Orthodox Church, and his pastor, the Rev. Vladimir Petorak, will be officiating. Burial will be in Holy Annunciation Church Cemetery, Berwick.

Born in Hetlerville, July 27, 1902, he was a son of the late Hiram Miller and Polly E. (Andreas) Miller.
In his youth, he hauled milk for 11 years. He also worked at the AC&F for a year and the Multiplex for 11 years. Mr. Miller later worked at the Berwick Golf Club, where he was greenskeeper for eight of his 33 years of employment. He was instrumental in the layout of Arnold's Golf Course.
Mr. Miller was the eldest member of St. Johns United Church of Christ, Wapwallopen.

He had been employed as a steelworker for Lukens Steel, formerly in Coatesville, before retiring in 1988.
He was an Army veteran of WWII.
Surviving are two sons: Harold Lee Williams of Orange, Texas; and Larry Dean Williams, Nottingham; there are two daughters; Gloria Jean (Williams) Templin of Mohnton; and Bonnie Jo (Williams) Reilly of Coatesville; there are two stepsons: Terry Lee Griffith of Warwick, Md.; and Joseph Elwood Griffith of Newark, Del.; and one stepdaughter: Carole (Griffith) Zeisloft of Newark, Del.; there is one sister: Dorothy (Williams) Wagner of Hummelstown; there are 20 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter. He was predeceased by a brother, Harold L. Williams, and a stepdaughter, Barbara Jane (Griffith) Karns.
Arrangements are private at the convenience of the family under the direction of the Dengler Funeral Home Inc., Birdsboro. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to your local American Heart Association.

Born July 10, 1940, in Berwick, he was a son of the late Albert and Thelma (Stevens Bertsch) Weaver. He was raised by foster parents named Ridall.
Mr. Weaver served in the Army from 1959 to 1962.
He celebrated his 39th wedding anniversary with his wife, the former Carol Hayeock, Nanticoke, on April 4.
He retired from Berwick Weaving in early 2002, where he had been maintenance supervisor. Mr. Weaver had worked there for more than 41 years. He also farmed in rural Berwick.
A member of the NRA, Mr. Weaver was also a former member of Berwick Elks 1138, a former member of the Berwick Moose and a member of the Chillisquaque Coon Club, Washingtonville. He enjoyed hunting.

She was a member of St. Mary's of the Assumption Church, Wyalusing, where she was also a member of the church choir. Mrs. Stahl belonged to the Rought Hall Post No. 510 American Legion Auxiliary in Black Walnut, and the Junior Birthday Club in Laceyville.
Mrs. Stahl enjoyed sewing, knitting, dancing and spending time with her grandchildren.

Mrs. Hildebrand graduated in 1972 from Northwest Area High School.
She was first employed at the former Country Cousins Shoe Factory in Mocanaqua for 19 years, and was then employed for 13 years at the Bonham Nursing Center in Register, retiring due to ill health.
Mrs. Hildebrand was a member of the Bloomingdale Bible Church.
