Danville woman was known for her kindness

Sarah M. Burkland, 96, of 110 Ardmore Ave., Danville, Cemetery-obituaries?utm_source=partner_genlookups&utm_medium=partner&utm_campaign=genlookups_July21_textlink&tr_ad_group=textlinks&tr_funnel=supersearch">died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2003, at her residence. Born Sept. 28, 1907 in Berwick, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Mary Werkheiser Miller. Her early years were spent on the family farm near Numidia with her parents and brother.

Sarah married her husband John in April 1960, who preceded her in Cemetery-obituaries?utm_source=partner_genlookups&utm_medium=partner&utm_campaign=genlookups_July21_textlink&tr_ad_group=textlinks&tr_funnel=supersearch">death in 1987. A brother, Max Miller, and two sons, Harry and Glenn Baer, also preceded her in death.

She was a member of St. James United Church of Christ in Danville.

Sarah had a great capacity to love, having raised six of her own children, she was also known for years as Mother B. or Mom-Mom to dozens of Danville's children. Her home was a safe haven and home away from home with a cookie jar that was always full. An extra bed or listening ear were always there when needed. The birds, rabbits and squirrels knew of her love for them, coming to visit and eat daily, feeling safe.

She is survived by her daughters: Mrs. James (Lucille) Thomas of Allendale, N.J.; Maxine Swisher of Danville; Mrs. Dennis (Judy) Van Benthuysen of Selinsgrove; sons: Larry Baer of Danville; Theodore "Chick" Burkland, and his wife, Ruth, of Riverside; daughter-in-law, Alda Baer of Danville; grandchildren: Lori and Ed McCue, Kathy and Jim Peterson, Linda and John Deegan, Karen Swisher, Kara Baer, David and Orena Van Benthuysen, Elizabeth and Paul Kerlin, Melissa Van Benthuysen, Christine Van Benthuysen, Edward and Sherry Burkland, Mary Ann Johansson. Also surviving are 13 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Brady Funeral Home Inc., 320 Church St., Danville, with her pastor, the Rev. Richard Shearer, officiating. Burial will follow at Grovania Cemetery in Danville. There will be no viewing. The family will provide flowers. Donations in her memory may be made to St. James United Church of Christ, Bloom Road, Danville, or Geisinger Hospice, c/o Geisinger Medical Center, One N. Academy Ave., Danville, Pa. 17822.

Arrangements are being handled by Brady Funeral Home, Danville.

H. Kenneth Rhinard

Orangeville farmer played baseball, managed teams

H. Kenneth Rhinard, 78, of 131 Hill Road, Orangeville, Fishingcreek Township, Cemetery-obituaries?utm_source=partner_genlookups&utm_medium=partner&utm_campaign=genlookups_July21_textlink&tr_ad_group=textlinks&tr_funnel=supersearch">died early Sunday morning, Sept. 28, 2003, at Bonham Nursing Center, Huntington Township, where he had been a resident since May 22. He had been in declining health for the past three years.

Born in Fishingcreek Township, Columbia County, June 2, 1925, he was a son of the late Orvie D. Rhinard and Cora E. (Hess) Rhinard.

Mr. Rhinard was a 1943 graduate of Benton High School and lived at his last address since 1948.

A lifelong Fishingcreek Township resident, Mr. Rhinard was a farmer most of his life. He also drove school bus for the Benton Area School District for 54 years, retiring in 1990.

He was a member of Jonestown United Methodist Church.

In the 1960s and 1970s, he served as a Fishingcreek Township Supervisor. He also served on the Benton Area School District Board of Directors for 12 years.

Mr. Rhinard was a well known baseball player, playing for and managing several local amateur baseball teams. He managed the former Stillwater Cardinals, the Bendertown Aces, the Berwick Red Sox and the team in Jonestown. He also played for Huntington Mills and in a Sunday league in Sweet Valley.

An avid outdoorsman, he was a sports fan who also enjoyed hunting.

He is survived by his wife, Hilda (Johnson) Rhinard, with whom he celebrated 55 years of marriage Jan. 29; three children: Glen H. Rhinard, Jonestown, Edwin W. Rhinard, Tunkhannock; and Rebecca J. Rhinard, Jonestown; one grandson; and four siblings: Audrey Reed, Allenwood; Mrs. Richard D. (Ruth) Wenner, Stillwater; Roy Rhinard, Stillwater; Mrs. William (Shirley) Avery, Orangeville.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the McMichael Funeral Home Inc., 4394 Red Rock Road, Benton, with the Rev. Darwin C. Goshorn, pastor of the Jonestown United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.

Homer L. Kocher

Retired fencing installer worked on family farm

Homer L. Kocher, 90, of Berwick R.R. 2, Cemetery-obituaries?utm_source=partner_genlookups&utm_medium=partner&utm_campaign=genlookups_July21_textlink&tr_ad_group=textlinks&tr_funnel=supersearch">died Saturday afternoon, Dec. 6, 2003, at the Lehigh Valley Hospital in Allentown, where he was admitted on Wednesday.

Mr. Kocher was born July 20, 1913, in Centre Township, Columbia County. Homer was the son of the Late Levi Z. and Ida Beltz Kocher.

As a young man he worked for Leon Welsh Logging, then went to work for the former AC&F Industries plant in Berwick and also worked the family farm in Berwick R.R. 2. Mr. Kocher was employed for 12 years by the former Americana Mobile Homes plant in Berwick.

Most of his life was spent working in the fencing business as an installer, first for Suburban Fence Co. and the Bangor Fence Co. of Berwick, and finally the Neighbor Fence Co. in Berwick, retiring in 1991. He enjoyed fishing as a pastime.

Mr. Kocher is survived by his children, Brian K. Kocher and his wife Denise, of Benton R.R. 1, a grandson, Brandon Kocher, of Benton R.R. 1, Ruth Ann Kocher, of Berwick, and two sisters, Martha Lawler, of Berwick, and Eleanor Reeves, of Champaign, Ill.

Funeral services for Mr. Kocher will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. from the James L. Hinckley Jr. Funeral Home, 1024 Market St., Berwick, with Pastor Paul Mosley of the Bible Baptist Church, Benton, officiating. Burial will be in Elan Memorial Park, Lime Ridge. Visitation will be Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.

William I. Gensemer Jr.

William I. Gensemer Jr., 62, of 212 Fourth Ave., (Briar Crest) Berwick, was stricken very suddenly while at work on Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2003, and Cemetery-obituaries?utm_source=partner_genlookups&utm_medium=partner&utm_campaign=genlookups_July21_textlink&tr_ad_group=textlinks&tr_funnel=supersearch">died a short time later. He was at the PPL Susquehanna Steam Electric Plant.

Mr. Gensemer was born in Berks County on May 16, 1941, was a son of the late William I. and Grace Rhine Gensemer Sr.

Mr. Gensemer was a graduate of Wilson High School, Class of 1959, in Wyomissing. He entered in the U.S. Marine Corps and achieved the rank of corporal, serving in Vietnam and Hawaii. Following his service time, he earned an associate's degree from Wilkes University and graduated from the Pennsylvania State Police Academy in 1967. As a young man, he worked as a salesman for the Herb Motor Co. in Wernersville. He served with the Pennsylvania State Police for 25 years, retiring in 1992 as a criminal investigator. Following his retirement, he worked for PPL as a specific professional doing background checks on prospective employees.

Mr. Gensemer was a very active member of the First Reformed United Church of Christ, serving as a lector, past member of the Consistory. He also was a member of the Pa. N.E. Conference Pastoral Selection Committee.

He belonged to numerous organizations: Fraternal Order of Police, Berwick Golf Club and past drive chairman of Berwick Area United Way. He served on the YMCA board of directors and was a past president of the board, Shickshinny Masonic Lodge, Caldwell Consistory in Bloomsburg, and Irem Temple, Wilkes-Barre. He was a very active member of the Berwick Elks Lodge 1138, where he was a past exalted ruler, past district deputy and past state vice president. He served as chairman of numerous committees and was presently treasurer.

He enjoyed woodworking, particularly scroll sawing, reading, flower gardening and golfing.

Mr. Gensemer is survived by his wife, the former Brenda J. Eyerly. They celebrated their 34th wedding anniversary on Oct. 18. Also surviving is a son, Greg W. Gensemer, Williamsport; a daughter, Gretchen L. Gensemer, Salisbury, NC; two brothers: Jerre Gensemer and his wife, Jane, of Robesonia; and Barry Gensemer and his wife, Dorothy, of Myerstown; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Mr. Gensemer will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. from the First Reformed United Church of Christ, corner of Second and Vine streets, Berwick, with the Rev Frank Demmy, his pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the Pine Grove Cemetery, Walnut Street, Berwick, with Pa. State Police honors. Visitation will be 7 to 9 p.m. Friday from the James L. Hinckley Jr. Funeral Home, 1024 Market St., Berwick, with an Elks Memorial service starting at 7 p.m. There will also be a visitation on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the church.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the First Reformed United Church of Christ, Stained Glass Fund or the Berwick YMCA, corner of Vine and 3rd streets, Berwick, Pa. 18603.

Herman May

Herman May, 71, of Wesley Copper Kettle Park, Tunkhannock, Cemetery-obituaries?utm_source=partner_genlookups&utm_medium=partner&utm_campaign=genlookups_July21_textlink&tr_ad_group=textlinks&tr_funnel=supersearch">died at his home Thursday, Dec. 4, 2003.

He served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, Dec. 8, 2003, at 11 a.m. from the Clarke Piatt Funeral Home Inc., 6 Sunset Lake Road, Hunlock Creek, with the Rev. James Davis officiating.

Interment will be at Sorber Cemetery, Union Township, Shickshinny. Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Ronald G. Dendler

Berwick man, Korean vet enjoyed hunting, golfing

Ronald G. Dendler, 68, of 319 Buckhorn Road, Bloomsburg, Cemetery-obituaries?utm_source=partner_genlookups&utm_medium=partner&utm_campaign=genlookups_July21_textlink&tr_ad_group=textlinks&tr_funnel=supersearch">died early Wednesday morning, Dec. 3, 2003, at his home. Mr. Dendler worked at Textron in Danville. Prior to that, he was employed for many years at TRW, retiring in 1997. During his working career, he also worked for several years as a waterproofer, and for CEDA-COG for a short time.

He was a 1953 graduate of Mifflinville High School.

Mr. Dendler was a veteran of the Korean War, where he served in the U. S. Army, attaining the rank of corporal.

He was a former member of the Mifflinville United Methodist Church.

His hobbies included hunting and golfing.

He was a member of the Bloomsburg Elks Lodge, the Catawissa V. F. W. and the American Legion. He was also a a member of the Mifflinville Fire Hall.

Surviving are his children: Deborah K. Neff, Danville; Patricia M. Cooper, Buckhorn; Linda L. Dendler-Johns, Benton; Derl L. Reichard Sr., Danville; Roy M. Reichard, New Cumberland. Also surviving are 12 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and the following siblings: Janet L. Dendler, Berwick; Mrs. Merritt (Linda K.) Pollock, rural Nescopeck; Mrs. Gerald (Amy J.) Morris, Waynesboro, Va.; Richard K. Dendler, Chalfont; and Randall P. Dendler, Berwick.

Harriet A. (Styer) Boop

Harriet A. (Styer) Boop, 89, of 526 Center St., Bloomsburg, Cemetery-obituaries?utm_source=partner_genlookups&utm_medium=partner&utm_campaign=genlookups_July21_textlink&tr_ad_group=textlinks&tr_funnel=supersearch">died at 4:20 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, at the Bloomsburg Health Care Center, where she had been a patient since May 28.

She was born May 10, 1914, in Philadelphia, a daughter of the late Samuel P. and Nellie (Ohl) Styer. She lived in Bloomsburg since her early childhood.

Mrs. Boop was a 1932 graduate of Bloomsburg High School and a 1934 graduate of the former Bloomsburg State Teachers College.

She was an elementary school teacher, beginning her career in Dushore, where she taught for several years before she began teaching in the Bloomsburg School District, last teaching at the W.W. Evans Elementary School. She taught for a total of 31 years, retiring in 1978.

Mrs. Boop was an active member of the Christ Lutheran Church, Buckhorn, for many years, where she was a former Sunday school teacher. She also served as organist and choir director for many years. She also belonged to the Lutheran Church Women at the church.

She was a member of Fort McClure Chapter, DAR, Bloomsburg, and the Pennsylvania Retired Teachers Association. She was a former member of the Columbia County Chorale and the Women's Civic Club.

When her children were young, Mrs. Boop was active in the PTA and other Bloomsburg school groups.

Surviving are her husband, Ariel Charles Boop, with whom she would have celebrated her 62nd wedding anniversary yesterday; two daughters: Mrs. William J. (Jane B.) Bissinger and Mrs. James E. (Janet F.) Shaffer, both of Bloomsburg; a son, John S. Boop of Catawissa; six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She was the last member of her immediate family.

Funeral services will be 2:30 p.m. Monday at Christ Lutheran Church, Buckhorn, with the Rev. Allen F. Acor, pastor of Trinity United Church of Christ, Strawberry Ridge, officiating.

Burial will be in the Columbia Hill Cemetery, West Hemlock Township, Montour County.

Arrangements are being handled by the Dean W. Kriner, Inc., Funeral Home, 325 Market St., Bloomsburg.

Martin J. Sheridan

Saturday services set for former PPL mechanic

Martin J. Sheridan, 47, 678 Central Road, Benton, Cemetery-obituaries?utm_source=partner_genlookups&utm_medium=partner&utm_campaign=genlookups_July21_textlink&tr_ad_group=textlinks&tr_funnel=supersearch">died unexpectedly at 4:42 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2003, at the Bloomsburg Hospital, where he was a patient for a day.

Born in Newark, N.J., on Nov. 20, 1955, he was a son of the late Martin W. and Anna M. (Evans) Sheridan.

In his early life, he was a resident of Old Branch, N.J., relocating to Central, Sugarloaf Township, around 1977.

He was a 1974 graduate of Middlesex County Vocational School in New Jersey, and later served with the Army for three years, and the National Guard and Army Reserve for approximately ten years.

Mr. Sheridan was employed for over 20 years as a structural mechanic by PPL Electric Utilities at the Bell Nuclear Power plant, Salem Township.

He was a member of the American Legion Post in Sonestown, Sullivan County, and was a social member of Fort Rickett's Post 8317, VFW, Benton.

Survivors include his wife, the former Kathie E. Stackhouse, with whom he celebrated a 22nd wedding anniversary on July 3; a stepson, Marlin L. Sitler Jr., Bloomsburg; a brother, Charles W. Sheridan, Monroe Township, N.J.; and a sister, Ann Marie Foster, Benton.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Dean W. Kriner Inc. Funeral Home, Benton. Burial will be in St. Gabriel's Cemetery, Sugarloaf Township.

John T. Brokenshire

John T. Brokenshire, age 83, Cemetery-obituaries?utm_source=partner_genlookups&utm_medium=partner&utm_campaign=genlookups_July21_textlink&tr_ad_group=textlinks&tr_funnel=supersearch">died Thursday, Dec. 18, 2003, at Emmanuel Nursing Center in Danville, where he had been a guest for the past two years. John was formerly of Locust Valley and resided in Ringtown for five years. He was born April 20, 1920, in Mahanoy City, a son of the late George and Elva (Tregea) Brokenshire.

He married the former Stella Kusailitis in April of 1942. She preceded him in Cemetery-obituaries?utm_source=partner_genlookups&utm_medium=partner&utm_campaign=genlookups_July21_textlink&tr_ad_group=textlinks&tr_funnel=supersearch">death in December of 2000.

Mr. Brokenshire served two years in the Civilian Conservation Corps in New Mexico from 1938-1940. He worked in the Philadelphia Naval Yard from 1942 to 1945 and served in the U.S. Army Counter Intelligence Corps (CIC) from 1945 to 1946.

He formed the independent mining operation of Brokenshire Coal, which functioned from 1946 to 1968. He later worked at Allied Chemical Corporation of Pottsville from 1968 until his retirement in 1986.

He is survived by three sons, Dr. John R. Services will be private and at the convenience of the family.

Ricky C. 'Rick' Fronk

Bloomsburg man was Wise Foods truck driver

Ricky C. "Rick" Fronk, 50, of 315 Fowlersville Road, Bloomsburg, Cemetery-obituaries?utm_source=partner_genlookups&utm_medium=partner&utm_campaign=genlookups_July21_textlink&tr_ad_group=textlinks&tr_funnel=supersearch">died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2003, at his home.

Born Nov. 25, 1953 in Bloomsburg, he was a son of Elizabeth (Shultz) Fronk of Numidia, and the late Frederick Fronk.

Mr. Fronk was a truck driver and was last employed by Wise Foods Inc., of Berwick.

He attended Columbia-Montour Vocational Technical School.

Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his wife, Mary E. (Little) Fronk, whom he married Feb. 2, 1996; five children: Nicole Dudley, Delaware; Randy and Cory Fronk, both of Catawissa; Kylie and Cody Fronk, both of Bloomsburg; four grandchildren; four brothers: Donald and Robert Fronk, both of Bloomsburg; Dale Fronk of South Carolina; and Scott Fronk of Catawissa.
