Herminie
Susan A. (Montecupo) Czuway, 85, of Herminie, died Monday, Nov. 5, 2001, at Westmoreland Manor, Greensburg. She was born Jan. 13, 1916, in Tarrs, a daughter of the late Michael and Anna (Colaprete) Montecupo. She was a member of St. Edward Church, Herminie. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Sigmund "Ziggy" Czuway, in 1985; a brother, Tony; and a sister, Margaret Montecupo. Mrs. Czuway, "Susan, " is survived by four brothers, Mr. Joseph and his wife, Elinor Montecupo, of Port Orange, Fla., Mr. Louis and his wife, Josephine Montecupo, of Herminie, Mr. James and his wife, Evelyn "Dolly" Montecupo, of Greensburg and Mr. John and his wife, Mary Montecupo, of Greensburg; and several nieces and nephews. Friends will be received at the JOSEPH W. NICKELS FUNERAL HOME INC., Herminie, Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A funeral liturgy will be held in the funeral home Friday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Lawrence L. Manchas officiating. Interment will follow in Westmoreland County Memorial Park, Hempfield Township. A St. Edward parish rosary will be recited Thursday at 3:30 p.m. and a St. Edward parish wake service will be held Thursday at 7:30 p.m., both in the funeral home.
Jeannette
John C. Dlusky, 66, of Jeannette, died Sunday, Nov. 4, 2001, at the home of his family. He was born June 14, 1935, in Greensburg, a son of the late John J. and Sarah Wasielewski Dlusky. Prior to retirement, he was employed by the former Westmoreland Glass and had been a security guard at St. Anne Home. He was a longtime member of High Park Volunteer Fire Department, and a member of the Westmoreland County Sheriff's Department Search and Rescue K-9 Team. He was also a member of Sacred Heart Church, the Polish Brotherhood of White Eagles, both of Jeannette; the Penn Rod and Gun Club; and the Irwin Sportsmen's Club. An avid trapshooter, he also enjoyed and participated in rodeos. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Donald Dlusky. Surviving are a sister-in-law, Nancy Dlusky of Greensburg; a nephew, Dr. Donald J. Dlusky of Fairmont, W.Va.; a niece, Anna Marie Stewart and husband, James, of Greensburg and their children, Carina and Shane Stewart; an aunt, Ann Rich of Jeannette; and his companion, Betty Peer. There will be no public visitation. A memorial Mass will be celebrated Thursday at 10 a.m. in Sacred Heart Church. Anna E. (Martincheck) Hanko, 90, of Westmoreland City, died Sunday, Nov. 4, 2001, in Jeannette. She was born Oct. 28, 1911, in Minersville, a daughter of the late George Sr. and Mary (Goras) Martincheck. She was a member of St. Mark's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Duquesne; Holy Trinity Slovak Lutheran Church, Sheridan Terrace; and the National Slovak Society. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Hanko, on Aug. 2, 1976; two brothers, John and George Martincheck; and five sisters, Julia Lehosky, Mary Maley, Christ Goras, Vern Palicka and Irene Skodak. Survivors include five sons, the Rev. George Hanko and wife, Nancy, of Duquesne, John Hanko and wife, Darlene, Robert Hanko and Ronald Hanko, all of Westmoreland City, and David Hanko and wife, Kristan, of Level Green; three daughters, Nancy Marto and husband, Richard, of Irwin, Carol Rigney and husband, Randy, of Claridge and Patricia Richert and husband, Ronald, of Harrison City; 19 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. Friends were received Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the VINCENT V. RODGERS FUNERAL HOME, 805 Pennsylvania Ave., Irwin. Funeral Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Holy Trinity Slovak Lutheran Church, Sheridan Terrace, with the Rev. George Hanko officiating. Interment

Derry
Carrie J. Hysong Irwin, 86, of Derry, died Monday, Nov. 5, 2001, in Latrobe Area Hospital. She was born Aug. 13, 1915, in Derry, a daughter of the late Leroy Hysong and Elizabeth Nicholson Hysong Dandoy. She was a member of the Derry First United Methodist Church and the Auxiliary of the Grand Lodge of the United Transportation Union. Carrie had a great passion for the Salvation Army, and in 1995 she and her husband received an honorary commendation and plaque for their devotion and faithful giving to the Army for over 60 years. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Howard H. "Dutch" Irwin, in 1997, and three sisters, Leonia Hysong, Irene Robb and Virginia Shaffer. Carrie is survived by her son, Paul L. Irwin and his wife, Anita, of Blairsville RD3; three granddaughters, Maria E. Allison and Paula A. Byers of Derry and Patricia L. Myers of Latrobe; three great-grandchildren, Stephen Allison and Nicholas and Alyssa Myers; two brothers, Joseph L. Hysong of Carmel, Calif., and Floyd J. Hysong of Wilmington, N.C.; and numerous nieces and nephews. There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be announced at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army in honor of the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, tragedy. The MICHAEL J. QUINLISK FUNERAL HOME INC., 548 N. Ida V. (Buell) Nicol, 82, formerly of Pitcairn, on Monday, Nov. 5, 2001. Wife of the late John Daniel Nicol; mother of John J. (wife, Wendy) Nicol of Michigan; sister of Robert Buell of Florida, Jack Buell of Marion Center, Pa., Ruth Nixon of Washington, Ethel Powers of Coudersport, Pa., and the late Helen Baughman; grandmother of Terri Zydbak and Julie Falconer. Also survived by five great-grandchildren. Friends will be received Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the WM. O. PEARCE FUNERAL HOME INC., 318 Wall Ave., Pitcairn, where service will be held Thursday at 1 p.m.
Youngwood
Marjorie Dana Geer Serafin, 39, of Youngwood, died Tuesday morning, Nov. 6, 2001, in Latrobe Area Hospital, after a five-year courageous battle with cancer. She was born Sept. 15, 1962, in Kirkwood, Mo., a daughter of Marjorie Joan McFadden Geer of Scottdale and the late Philip Nessly Geer, who died June 26, 1981. Dana attended Trinity United Methodist Church, Scottdale, received her education in the Hempfield School District and attended the Pittsburgh Beauty Academy of Greensburg. She was involved in retail sales at the former Troutman's Department Store, Greensburg, for several years and had a flair for interior design. Prior to her illness, she was employed by Dick's Sporting Goods of Smithton. Dana cherished the many special times she spent with her husband, Bob, riding with him on their Harley-Davidson and also the quality time with him in their over-the-road adventures in his tractor-trailer throughout the United States. In addition to her mother, Marjorie Joan McFadden Geer of Scottdale, Dana leaves to hold dear her memories, her loving and devoted husband of 15 years, Robert K. Serafin, whom she married Dec. 31, 1985; her 8-year-old daughter, Rachel N. Serafin, a student at Stanwood Elementary School, New Stanton, whom she cherished and loved dearly and was very proud of her karate accomplishments; two sisters, Christine Beste and her husband, Glen, of Washington, Mo., and Debra A. Francilancia and her husband, Henry, of Harahan, La.; a brother, Nessly J. Geer and his wife, Denise, of Manchester, N.H.; a sister-in-law, Joan Koontz of Greensburg; her father-in-law, Casmer J. Serafin of Greensburg; nine nieces and nephews; and a number of dear friends, including K. Heidi Lewandowski Sandzimier of Scottdale. In addition to her father, Philip Nessly Geer, Dana was preceded in death by her mother-in-law, Mary Serafin, on March 23, 1991. Dana's family will receive friends Thursday from 2 to 9 p.m. at the FRANK KAPR FUNERAL HOME INC., 417 W. Pittsburgh St., Scottdale, where service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Dr. Paul Morris, pastor of Trinity United Methodist Church, Scottdale, officiating. Graveside service and interment
will follow in Scottdale Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate contributions to the educational endowment fund for her daughter, Rachel, in memory of Dana.

Anthony J. Serra, 94, of Jeannette, died Monday, Nov. 5, 2001, in Mifflin. He was born Jan. 17, 1907, in Madison, a son of the late Thomas and Maria Brocco Serra. Prior to retirement, he was employed by the former American Window House of Jeannette. Anthony was a member of the Ascension Church of Jeannette and its Holy Name Society; a veteran of World War II, having served with the U.S. Army; and a member of F.O.E. 844 of Jeannette. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Josephine Moffa Serra, in 1989; four brothers, Charles, John, David and Carl Serra; and two sisters, Elena Toniolo and Angeline Serra. Anthony is survived by a son, Anthony Thomas Serra and wife, Patricia, of Mifflintown; a daughter, Mary Magdaline Serra of New York City; two granddaughters, Jennifer C. Serra and Katherine A. Serra; a sister, Victoria Caviggia of Jeannette; and numerous nieces and nephews. Friends will be received at the JOHN V. GRAZIANO FUNERAL HOME INC., 228 N. Second St., Jeannette, beginning Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday at 10 a.m. in the Ascension Church. Interment will follow in St. Vincent Cemetery, Unity Township. The Ascension Holy Name Society will hold services Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. in the funeral home.

Josephine Marie Shoemaker, 75, of Unity Township, died Saturday, Nov. 3, 2001, in Westmoreland Regional Hospital, Greensburg. She was born April 1, 1926, in Greensburg, a daughter of the late Arthur A. and Cornelia Dell Hendrick. She was a retired cook for the St. Anne Home, Greensburg, and was an avid bowler. She is survived by her husband, Robert C. Shoemaker; a son, Robert J. Shoemaker and his wife, Leona, of Valdosta, Ga.; two daughters, Susan Diane Lukasiewicz and her husband, Vincent "Luke, " of Quitman, Ga., and Roberta Joann Williamson and her husband, Jeffrey, of Greensburg; five grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; a brother, Peter C. Hendrick and his wife, Mae, of Lincoln Park, Mich.; a sister, Barbara Ann Kelley and her husband, Robert, of North Apollo; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Joseph Donnelly, Charles Hendrick, Arthur A. Hendrick Jr. and John Hendrick. Friends received Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Wednesday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the COSHEY-NICHOLSON FUNERAL HOME INC., 319 W. Pittsburgh St., Greensburg, where service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Paul L. Westcoat Jr. officiating. Interment will follow in St. Clair Cemetery, Hempfield Township. Alvin P. David A. Valek, 74, of Derry, died Sunday, Nov. 4, 2001, in I.H.S. of Greater Pittsburgh, Hempfield Township. He was born May 3, 1927, in Hahntown, a son of the late John A. and Beatrice Sobota Valek. He was retired from Vanadium Steel, Latrobe, and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Robert C. Valek Sr. Survivors include five nieces, Cynthia Valek Blasko of Maryland, Charlene Valek Antonacci of Jeannette, Christine Valek Karem and Cathleen Valek Miller, both of Greensburg, and Tina Marie Valek James of Jeannette; a nephew, Robert C. Valek Jr. of Scottdale; and numerous cousins, great-nieces and great-nephews. Friends will be received Wednesday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the JOHN J. LOPATICH FUNERAL HOME INC., 601 Weldon St., Latrobe. A funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday at 10 a.m. in St. John the Evangelist Church with the Rev. Thomas Lukac as celebrant. Interment
