John E. "Jack" Ralph Jr., 81, of Boca Raton, Fla., formerly of Irwin, died Wednesday, Nov. 3, 1999, at his residence. Born Nov. 21, 1917, in Irwin, he was a son of the late John Elias Sr. and Ann (Hrabak) Ralph. He was treasurer of U.S. Steel Corp. He was past president of the Association of American Railroads Treasury Offices, Citizens Crime Watch and Good Fellowship Club. He was trustee of Robert Morris College in Pittsburgh, a 32nd Degree Mason, life member of Syria Temple Shrine and Shidle Lodge #601, and was elder of the Presbyterian Church in Pompano Beach, Fla., and Irwin. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Sarah (Bailey) Ralph, who died in 1978; and his second wife, Dorothy (Johns) Ralph, who died in 1992. Surviving are a sister, Betty R. Donaldson of Wisconsin; a daughter-in-law, Hanna Barker of Boca Raton, Fla.; an aunt, Lula Ralph of Pennsylvania; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Friends will be received at the VINCENT V. RODGERS FUNERAL HOME, 805 Pennsylvania Ave., Irwin, Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Monday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Funeral service will be held Monday at 1 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Robert C. Hill officiating. Interment in Irwin Union Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Irwin. Masonic services will be held Sunday at 8:30 p.m. in the funeral home.
Mary Sue (Bovington) Johnson, 70, of Mt. Lebanon, died peacefully at home on Saturday, Oct. 30, 1999. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Dec. 4, 1928, to the late John R. and Helen Pettibone. She graduated from Wheaton College in Massachusetts in 1951; married C. Bayard Johnson Jr. in 1958; and settled in Pittsburgh in 1971. She is survived by her loving husband, Bayard; daughters and sons-in-law, Cam and Greg Allen of Mt. Lebanon and Gail Johnson and Tim Elgren of Clinton, N.Y.; daughter, Molly Johnson of Seattle, Wash.; son and daughter-in-law, Bayard and Karen Johnson of St. Louis, Mo.; and six grandchildren, Robby, Brad, Scott, Ruth, Ben and Bay. She is also survived by her brother, John R. Bovington of Cleveland, Ohio. She was a dedicated, active grandmother, a member of Southminster Presbyterian Church and active in numerous church and community activities, including Southminster choir, women's hand bell team and AFS student exchange. Her family gratefully acknowledges the outpouring of support throughout the past few months from friends near and far, as well as the caring guidance and support of the Family Hospice. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Nov. 13, at 9:30 a.m. at Southminster Presbyterian Church in Mt. Lebanon. Sue expressed wishes that in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Southminster Presbyterian Church music program, Mt. Lebanon, Pa., the Mt. Lebanon Public Library or Family Hospice, Mt. Lebanon.
Anna Catherine Zruno, 91, of Greensburg, died Wednesday, Nov. 3, 1999, in St. Anne Home, Greensburg. She was born June 2, 1908, in Hannastown, a daughter of the late Stephan and Anna Kuvilich Yusko. She was a member of St. Bruno Catholic Church, South Greensburg, the Rosary Altar Society and the Living Rosary Society, both of St. Bruno Church. She had been a volunteer kitchen worker for 50 years at St. Bruno Church and a volunteer at Westmoreland Regional Hospital, Greensburg. She was a member of the Ladies Jednota Lodge Branch 277. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Anthony J. Zruno, in 1969; by a son, Thomas A. Zruno, in 1993; and by two brothers, John and Stephan Yusko. She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Robert (Rita) Herd of Greensburg; four granddaughters, Tamra and her husband, Chuck Wilson, Risa and her husband, Kurt Williams, Toni and her husband, Jeffrey Rankin, and Joyce and her husband, Michael Adamcyk; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Margaret Zahorchak of Luxor and Mary Mignogna of Jeannette; and a number of nieces and nephews. Friends were received at the BACHA FUNERAL HOME INC., 516 Stanton at Green streets, Greensburg, Friday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. A blessing service will be held in the funeral home Saturday at 9:30 a.m., followed by a Funeral Mass to be celebrated at 10 a.m. in St. Bruno Catholic Church, South Greensburg, with the Rev. Blane L. Resko, O.S.B., as celebrant. Interment will follow in the Greensburg Catholic Cemetery, Hempfield Township. The Rosary Altar Society will meet at the funeral home Friday at 3 p.m. to pray the rosary. Family suggests memorial contributions to St. Anne Home, 685 Angela Drive, Greensburg, PA 15601.
Greensburg
Janet E. Carter, 81, of Greensburg, died Saturday, Nov. 10, 2001, in Latrobe Area Hospital. She was born Feb. 11, 1920, in Greensburg, the daughter of the late William B. and Elizabeth Rudolph Mullen. Janet was a graduate of Greensburg High School in 1938 and of the Lincoln Hospital School of Nursing, Durham, N.C., in 1941. In 1950, Janet became the first African-American registered nurse at Westmoreland Regional Hospital. She served in many departments and as a private duty nurse. In 1965, she joined the John J. Kane Hospital in Pittsburgh as a nursing supervisor until retirement in 1980. She was a volunteer for the American Red Cross and an active member of the Bethel A.M.E. Church, where she served as past president of the Mary A. Stokes Missionaries Society and served on the Ushers Board and in the Gospel Choir. Throughout her life, Janet was active in the Alpha Service Club. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore Milton Carter; and a son, Theodore R. Carter. Survivors include a son, Raymond B. Carter and wife, Helena, of Greensburg; a daughter, Ramona E. Clayton and husband, Matthew D., of Haverford; 11 grandchildren, Chuck, Marcel, Raymond Jr., Ramona, Ted Jr., Dee Dee, Rebecca, Monique, Matthew II, Derek and Allisyn; and six great-grandchildren, Charles, Danielle, D.J., Israiel, Alexandria and Zack. Relatives and friends will be received Tuesday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the CLEMENT L. PANTALONE FUNERAL HOME INC., 409 W. Pittsburgh St., Greensburg, 724-837-0020. Service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the Bethel A.M.E. Church, 33 N. Spring St., Greensburg (PLEASE MEET AT THE CHURCH). Interment will follow in Hillview Cemetery, Greensburg. Viola Mae (Teets) Chatlos, age 80, passed away Monday, Nov. 12, 2001, in Seneca Valley Nursing Home in Verona. Prior to retirement, Viola worked as the bookkeeper for her son's dental practice in Plum Boro. She was a longtime member of Beulah Presbyterian Church in Churchill. Viola was the beloved wife of the late Daniel R. Chatlos. She is survived by her son, Dr. Robert D. Chatlos and his wife Judith of Monroeville; and her daughter, Nancy M. Palumbo and her husband Joseph of Penn Hills. She was the beloved grandmother of Lori Scott and her husband Paul of Mt. Washington, Dawn Lungren and her husband John of Monroeville, Cynthia Chatlos of Monroeville, Lenny Flack of Avalon, Holly Maromonte and her husband Matthew of Monroeville, and Angela Palumbo of Penn Hills; great-grandmother of Nathan Scott, Marc and Mychael Maromonte and Kaitlyn Kearns; sister-in-law of William Chatlos and the late Lydia Pieniadz; aunt of Gene Pieniadz, and William Pieniadz and his wife Marlene. She will also be dearly missed by many other nieces and nephews. Marguerite Jane Davis Clayton, 82, of North Huntingdon, died Saturday, Nov. 10, 2001, in Westmoreland Regional Hospital, Greensburg. She was born Dec. 29, 1918, in Irwin, a daughter of the late William and Catherine Downes Davis. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Irwin, the Women's Missionary Society and the Alpha Sunday School Class. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Morris Clayton; and two brothers, Norman C. and William D. Davis. She is survived by three daughters, Barbara Morgan and her husband, Vincent, of Pinnellas Park, Fla., Kathy Knapp and her husband, Robert, of Greensburg and Patricia Whoolery and her husband, Brad, of Phillipsburg; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Robert Davis of Ohio; a sister, Gene Hoff of Massachusetts; and nieces and nephews. Friends were received at the WILLIAM SNYDER FUNERAL HOME, 521 Main St., Irwin, Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. and will be received there Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. Alice Lorraine Felmlee, 73, of Fremont, Calif., died Thursday, Nov. 8, 2001, in Washington Hospital, California. She was born June 7, 1928, in Penn Township, a daughter of the late Harry E. and Helen R. Brinker Fennell. She was a former member of the Denmark Manor United Church of Christ. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Louise Back. She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Clifford E. Felmlee; a daughter, Sandi Bergman and husband, Bruce, of Columbia, Md.; and three sisters, Dorothy McIlvaine of Beavercreek, Ohio, Lillian Parson of Adamsburg, and Carol Davis of Phenix City, Ala. Friends were received Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. and will be received Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the JAMES E. LINDSAY FUNERAL HOME INC., Main Street, Harrison City, where service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Ray Himes officiating. Sadie Furno, 84, of Herminie (Keystone), died Sunday, Nov. 11, 2001, in the Baldock Health Care Centre, North Huntingdon. She was born Nov. 6, 1917, a daughter of the late Bernard and Caroline (Succo) Furno. Sadie was a life member of St. Edward Roman Catholic Church and its Altar Rosary Society. Sadie is survived by a brother, Bernard Furno of North Huntingdon; two sisters, Caroline Schade of Florida and Vicki Hannan of Pittsburgh; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Sadie was preceded in death by a brother, Anthony Furno. Friends will be received at the JOSEPH W. NICKELS FUNERAL HOME INC., Herminie, Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday at 10 a.m. in St. Edward Roman Catholic Church, Herminie. Interment will follow in the Westmoreland County Memorial Park, Hempfield Township. A St. Edward Parish wake service will be held Tuesday at 3 p.m. and a parish rosary will be recited Tuesday at 3:30 p.m., both in the funeral home.

Helen S. Gradish, 80, of the Laurel Highlands Personal Care Home, Donegal, died Saturday, Nov. 10, 2001, in Latrobe Area Hospital. She was born Aug. 6, 1921, in Kecksburg, a daughter of the late George M. Sr. and Sophie Labuda Gradish. She was a member of St. Mary's Byzantine Catholic Church, Trauger. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Paul, John, Michael and George Gradish; and two sisters, Margaret and Mary Gradish. She is survived by a sister, Elizabeth "Betty" Osif; and a niece, Kathy Nicklow. Friends will be received at the JAY A. HOFFER FUNERAL HOME, Norvelt, Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. to the time of Panachida service at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Christopher R. Burke officiating. Nancy L. (Collins) Grill, 70, of Turtle Creek, on Saturday, Nov. 10, 2001. Beloved wife of the late James O. Grill Sr.; loving mother of Nancy Deriggi and her husband, Mike, James O. Grill Jr. and his wife, LaVonne, Joanne Grill and Gene; also survived by her grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. Sister of the late Edgar, James, Albert and John Collins. Mrs. Grill was a member of Turtle Creek Christian and Missionary Alliance Church and was a volunteer for Forbes Regional Hospital in the gift shop.
